This place serves well for 18 year olds who wanted to pop their club cherry, before they have standards.

I'm not a person quick to judgment, but this place was so wretched that I felt I had no choice but sign up for yelp just to write them a review. There were many things in particular that were just irksome but not major enough to write this place off. however, placed in conjunction, these issues created a perfect storm of shit.

The setting: There isn't much to say about this, the address says it all. All I will say, is that I walked a bit faster than normal on the way to the place and on the way back to the car (I was designated driver.) Also, the pat you down at the door.

the bar, the bar, the bar: First off, it is not a full bar. Second, and most importantly, the bartenders are the worst bartenders I have EVER been served by. Now, let me paint you a picture of what i mean about ever. I tend to go bar hopping in the city often. I have experience fantastic bartenders to not so fantastic bartenders. But this place, my god, the bartenders should not even be called such. They are an embarrassment to the profession. The bar, at the peek of activity, was at least three times less crowded than a good bar in the city, yet it took at least 3 times longer to get any attention from the bartenders. They move so slowly it pained me to watch them serve.  It took me ten minutes to get their attention and then a further five minutes to get my drink. My drink was not even complicated, a gin and tonic for my girl and a beer for me, yet it took forever! There were apparently three bartenders but only two were doing anything. There were visible sections of the bar that were just unattended, where no one were getting serviced. The lady next to me was getting visibly aggravated as she was there before me and got her drink the same time as me, which blows my mind.

Drinks: couple of pet peeves here. The first, was when I got my beer. I got a Heineken, which they poured into a plastic cup. Though the entire bottle fit comfortably in the cup, the fact that they did this was telling about the establishment itself. It tells me that they don't want a bottle out there on the floor to be used as a weapon. The only other option was that they didn't have the wait staff to pick them up, which from observation, was not true. Second, they sold bottles of water. Now, this was just bullshit. At the surface it may seem fine, but it really shows that they don't give a shit about their customers. Why? well, any bar, any bar would give cups of water to their customers FOR FREE. This is because bars generally want their customers not to get so blitzed drunk, because, well, that's just bad for business. I mean, it is common courtesy.

Bottle service: Now, if you pay 200 dollars for a 30 dollar bottle of liquor you are not just paying for liquor, you are paying for an experience. Some of my friends bought bottles. Now, the bottles did come with sparklers, and it was fairly evident to the entire place you ordered a bottle, which was nice. But they just placed the bottle down, and the service after that was less than impressive. Now a lot of people got bottles and I could not help but thinking that those people got bottles because the have been here before and they know what the bar was like.

Sound System: The music was so loud that all you hear was bass. you could barely tell which song was playing. when they spoke on the mic I could not understand a word they said.

SMOKE: they sell hookah here, and it is pretty good. however, the ventilation was so bad that at the peak of the evening the air was saturated with smoke.

Now the few good aspects. The place was well dj'ed. The crowd was very mixed in age, which was different from what I am used to, but was still nice.

This club is one of the few that lets in 18 year old. Now, I am not that old, I'm 22, but I still would rather not party with 18 year olds.

sucks. im going to report how they take all the tips from the bartenders when they all work so hard. they made up their own rule that the bartenders make 20% only of the the sales they make which means if someone gives you 50.00 you only get 10.00 from that. they are snakey and i hope the work force shuts them down or makes them change this fake rule they use. i am reporting them and alot of my friends are as well. snakes!!!!!!

I made the mistake of coming here this wkd to show my cousin around the neighborhood.  I witnessed at least 4 fights breakout within one hour.  I don't know if it's the drinks or just the bad energy that the club brings out but it was not fun at all.  The place itself is nice and spread out.  They have a $20 cover.  I could see the appeal of this place for an 18 year who wants to have their first club experience with music they are familiar with.  I'm one of the nicest people (I think) and I felt like I was going to have to get in a fight, I hate experiencing that when going out and this place seems like it's about that.  I promised myself to never come back here.  I wish I knew of good nightlife options in my neighborhood so I don't have to trek to the city or Astoria or BK all the time.

Maracas is actually a pretty good looking club considering it's in the Jamaica area. I went on a Saturday (10/13/2012) and it was pretty good, but I just left early because I was not too comfortable with the people around me (being Hispanic, I guess I wasn't too comfortable with the Reggae & Soca music that much!) I would definitely try to come back on Latino Fridays and hopefully that will make me like it more. But the music was great, just sucked no one started dancing or really got there until after 1 when it was free to get in until 12. :/

I been to Maracas a few times and always a Saturday because Friday night is Latin night and I do enjoy Latin music but I prefer more variety. The appearance of the club is top notch for it's location and appealing to the eye with Entertainers spread through out (4/5), the crowd is rowdy and can get crazy quick so this club isn't for the casual clubber nor faint hearted, ppl party hard & wild here and i advice u to travel with a private group to have a party within a party (4/5), security is pretty rude and willing to get your $ at the door during a free period so to avoid nonsense work through a promoter or arrive early (2/5), VIP is based on bottle minimal so the more bottles the better location and bottles are very reasonable I advice three or more for great seating and servers are always present (4/5), management is ok cuz you barely see them but the stuff gets you situated reasonably quick (3.5/5), music is mostly reggae and hip hop but also a great mix of: Latin, pop, lil house, top 40, and dance (4/5). Overall beside minor defects the club is a great time for ppl looking to let loose and party hard I advice to come with a group to have a more controlled party of your own. I hope this helps, safe clubbing and party hard.

Went here for the 3rd time this past weekend. This club is "environmentally impressive". Meaning, for the the neighborhood, it provides more than enough entertainment. However, I've gotten very used to partying in Manhattan and if this club was in Manhattan it would be at the bottom of the barrel.

Pros: affordable drinks, plenty of space, good sound system,

Cons: parking is a bitch, Unfriendly doormen unless you're with women. Also I'm over being patted down upon entering a club, -_-

They should rename Latin Fridays to Bachata and Merengue Fridays cause that's all they played. Where is the live DJ? It was a computer! Better off going to party at La Boom night club.

Don't you hate it when your friend doesn't know how to be a good wingman? 'First world problems,' you're probably thinking. What you're thinking is Wrong! The dating & mating ritual goes all the way back to Adam and Eve (the story of life, not the online sex toy shop..., amazing what google turns up). Anyways, about my bad wingman.. How does he not understand my simple head nod to migrate our happy feet next to the group of happily drunken dancing girls? FYI, I'm taking applications for a new wingman.

Maracas is a big place. Venue is nice, sound is loud, and lighting is good enough so you can make out the cute ones from the 'oh noes!' I learned a lot that night. For instance, girls don't like it when strange asian guys start rubbing up against them and, apparently guys don't like that much either. It's not my fault though; the strangest thing happens to me when you give me three Red Bulls and Soca / Reggaeton music; dangerous combination! I turn into a raging' asian dancing machine. I was bustin' out moves I never knew before. One side of my body would be bustin' out b-boy moves while the other side would be doing the river dance, all while my hands do these salsa gestures- because my salsa instructors tell me to "always keep your hands moving." At one point I was pulling out moves from my zumba classes! I stopped and realized what I was doing when this one older chubby woman threw me a strange look. I conveniently worked in a 180 degree spin at that point. She might have started laughing after I turned around... perfect time for a bathroom break.

The bathroom was great. Now I haven't been clubbin' it for a while, so I don't know if this is normal. But, they hired someone whose sole job is to sit in the bathroom to spray freshener when it gets smelly. And, he did a great job. It smelled like a fresh patch of daisies in there.

As soon as I hopped back onto the dance floor (with my wingman Kevin nowhere in sight!) this one girl accidentally backed her booty into my flailing hand (or was it the other way around?). I didn't even turn around to see if she was cute. That was one of those moments where I play dumb and kept it moving.

The neighborhood must have improved a lot over the years. This svelte and well-dressed handsome asian made it home at 3am on the train from Jamaica without being raped or pillaged. Good times!

    January 28th VIP B-day experience:
I had a pre- b-day bash here in VIP. It's always a different experience when you do VIP in a club, that's how I see it. There is a totally different ambience when you are separated from the rest of the crowd. You are partying with your own mature people and tended to by waiters, no waiting in lines for rude bartenders and all those other things people are complaining about in their reviews. I liked the decor over all in the club and in the VIP area with its own little private white room with long draping white blinds :) Awesome! We had a grandiose night. We got complimentary birthday cake and bottles of champagne. Parking can be a bit of a hassle, $20 bucks for valet, $40 for VIP. Glad babe and I parked the CL 63, in front of the club because I was not walking blocks in heels after a long night of dancing! Like I said before you will have a great time with your people there if they like to party responsibly, and if you have your own private area. The club was packed that night, no fights broke out. Don't let other people ruin your night of having fun! Thank you baby for another extraordinary memory. Will I go again? Yes.

Fridays is Latin night if you love bachata and tipico be prepared to dance the whole night, I went when geovanny polanco (famous Dominican merengue singer) was there I danced so much my ribs almost came out :). Good looking crowd always very high class night club that doesn't look like it belongs in that neighborhood, put on your best outfit and get ready to see sexy people dancing all night ;)

Okay, I am still having nightmares on this one!!! Like the person below, I give one star for the decor and that's about it!!!  Here goes....it was a Saturday nite.

It clearly states on the website that no cover for ladies before 1am, but as we proceeded to enter the bouncer by the door extorted $10 from each of us claiming he was doing us a favor by charging that when it would cost us $15 instead...this is a blatant lie.  He was pocketing the money.

Once we got in, it was empty...and it never filled up!  And it's appalling to see all the sleezy behavior, one chic was dancing with her panties and butt showing...let's get some class ladies.  And most of the young girls in there shamefully don't know how to behave they are like little animals.  As for the boyzzzzzzzz, they all look 12 yrs old.  Where are the beautiful ppl....certainly not here at Maracas.  The crowd was full of scrappy, tacky ppl.

The food menu was a joke, some gross looking chicken tenders and stale looking fries. And you have to go up and place your own orders, the waitress just ignores you.  And the ppl at the window are super rude.

I would never go back and hope to have those UGLY  images erased from my mind.

So, I went on a Friday night aka Latin Friday, it was DOPE! I sent someone on Saturday night and it was filled with Indians!

Okay, serious time. First and foremost, beautiful people ONLY. Also, don't complain about high prices on... everything. You gotta be ballin, this place is C-L-A-S-S-Y. That means no broke bums or h0es, thank you!

They get a one star and that's only for the decor! Other than that, this place is a dump where no respect is giving to those who patronize this establishment. Some things that I've noticed:

    1. Favorites: If you know the bouncers, be sure that you can cut the line and walk right in, while there's a long line forming outside that can get as long as down the block and around the corner. Just note that once I finally got in, there was no reason for the to be that long--the club was empty inside!

    2. Violent bouncers: Upon entering, I witnessed one bouncer grab a girl by the throat, pushed others out of his way and threw her out of the club. I can 100% say that I saw this argument in its entirety and she did not deserve to be handled in that way. She was merely standing off at the side of the coat line..the bouncer asked her to get on the coat line. She told him that she already gotten her coat and she was just waiting on her friend. He became a lot more rude and said "I said to get on the line!" She raised her voice back and said "I'm leaving now!" At that point, I guess it must have been a testosterone thing, but he grabbed her by the throat and physically threw her out. Wish I caught that on tape, it was so undeserving.

    3. Management- Boy oh boy, this place really swells the head of management here, or those who are left in charge. Specifically one girl by the name of Shantell. You can't miss her, she's short, dark and fat with ferociously bad breath! We booked a VIP through another contact there and was given one price, but as we got there she was kind enough to let us know in verbatim "Well I dont know who you think you are, but these are the bottle minimums for the vip section and if you can't get that amount of bottles, then you can't have the section."-- Understandably so, this is a business and you have rules as per vip sections, but there are more professional ways of dealing with customers. It was uncalled for and Maracas should realize that not everyone that walks into your establishment are a bunch of local hoodlums looking for a night of pure drunken stupor.

All in all, I'll never patronize this place if I'm ever in the mood to go dancing. Just not worth dealing with all the power tripping people who works there. Great decor, but horrible service. Go elsewhere--there are lots of west indian clubs/lounges that you can hear the same music with a lot less of the stress.

    Had a great time.

There were more guys than expected but I'm not complaining. Better than a bunch of women standing around looking bitter.

The music was great if you like Caribbean music. Mostly dancehall, soca and some chutney to cater to the mostly Indian crowd. They also played a little bit of rap and pop and anything you could dance to. I LOVED being able to dance the whole time.

I went to another bar before arriving here so the only thing I ordered was a bottle of water ($3) so I can't comment on the price or quality of the drinks. Bottles must be relatively cheap because I saw plenty of them everywhere. One guy even had his own personal Grey Goose which he sipped all night.

Security is SUPER tight. They searched all bags and used a metal detector wand! Obviously they have issues with fights here. In fact, there was a fight while I was the ladies room. They handled it well because I wouldn't have known if people didn't tell me.

Didn't get to try the food but I will next time I visit.

Worst place ever! Been to few clubs in my lifetime but never have any club suck ass like this one.
    Here are few points:
    1. Located out in the wilderness. Its a pain in the ass to get to this place from the city. Took me a hour and more to just get to the place.
    2. Worst bouncers ever. No respect for you and their treatment of you. From the website we found that you can wear sneaker, the guy that is. Once we got there the bouncer told us no they cant and realize we had 3 guys with sneakers on and not only that they gave us attitude for no reason. The few people that did go outside and came back to smoke a cigarette but when they try to reenter the bouncer made them pay the entry fee again. Like wtf, you saw us go in already. And when we protest the guy gave us a rude attitude. When i ask to speak to a manager the bouncer just point to the guy next to him and you can tell he wasn't the manager. What a bunch of assholes.
    3. The male and female ratio of the club was 10/2. So many creepers that don't even respect the fact you have your boyfriend with you. I got asked to dance with guys while dancing with my boyfriend. My boyfriend was super pissed, had to calm him down multiples time before he was like lets go home. Never again.
    4. The drinks were so water down it was like paying for water.Oh and last point the music was crappy. Too much chutney and not enough reggae or even spanish music. I was wondering how you have a club call maracas and not play spanish music. this place needs a lot of cleaning up to do before they can get any respect from me. only thing i would give a thumps up for this place is the decor. it was lovely.
When we finally was on our way home it was a hassle because it was so late.
Anyway think before you go to this place. save our money and just go to bar or lounge.

This is an okay..just okay, local spot to hit up if your in the mood for some dancing, but the music is so predictable...and they call themselves a "DJ"...whatever! The only problem(s) I have with this place, are the bartenders, and the annoying, illiterate bouncers.  Of all the nightclubs I have been to, I have never met any as snobby and stupid as the ones who work here on Saturday nights. There is probably only one bartender who doesnt have a nasty attitude, and its a dude! I dont know what they're problems are, but these female bartenders are not hot shit, so lay off the attitude! They are just people pouring drinks and should be a little nicer, considering its their JOB. As for the bouncers who are obviously underpaid, they are just flat out stupid and will probably throw everyone out just cause they feel like it. I've seen way better clubs that are only a few minutes drive away from this place...so save yourselves. With the way management is taking care of their business, this place they call a "club" will end up being a bigger dump that it already is. P.S. - if your into west indian boys who wish they were a part of the Jersey Shore, with sloppy blow outs and cheap tight clothes...GO HERE! By the way, who the hell wears sunglasses in nightclubs? Newsflash....you are NOT cool.

I've been here a few times, under its former name Rumjungle and its current name.  The decor has improved since its earlier days.  Drinks are on the weak side and overpriced.  The crowd is what you'd expect in a West Indian area-lots of young, barely out their teens, kids acting as if they run the place and causing drama and to the other extreme, middle aged men trying to cop a feel.  Not to hate on the fellas, even though there are numerous guys in the building, it is very sad to say that only a very small number of them attempt to dance and can dance.  Furthermore, I LOVE my dancehall, reggae and soca to death (only thing I listen to).  Unfortunately, the DJ's at this venue have been a huge disappointment and seem to run out of songs, playing the same songs multiple times, those that have been played out for a while or not even a diverse range or artists.  The DJ's that come with specific artists are soo much better.  To be honest, the only time I would come back to Maracas would be when a dancehall/soca artist is to perform.

This is a typical west indian night club. Nothing to call home about. Overpriced drinks, overpriced entrance fee, same crowd every saturday, nothing new. For the same price drinks, even less actually, and no entrance fee, you can go to some of the better clubs in Manhattan but if you like soca and reggae and chutney then you would like this club if you're drunk too.

Girls here are 50/50, more like 10/90. the 90 being the ugly old chicks that still think they got it with guts busting out they sides.

I've used to go to this place when it was called Rum Jungle.  Its now called Maracas and its pretty much the same....the only difference is that there is more of a spanish crowd going there now on certain nights.

It's still the go to west indian spot if you want a dose of West Indian music and food.  Overall, its not bad.

Make sure you get on a guestlist and get there before 12 if you dont want the hassle of paying, because once your in, the drinks are a pricey for what it is.

There are table for bottle service, the dance floor is big, and there are dancers all around the club.

The music they place are anything from hip hop, reggae, chutney, soca, reggaeton....anything that is popular and people can dance to is pretty much played.

It is very different than the regular clubs in the city (ie: Amnesia, Marquee, etc)  Be prepared for that!

Good for a birthday party, if they are into West Indian/ Caribbean music or if you just want to experience something different.

This review is based on numerous visits in the past year.

Male/Female Ratio: 1.2/1.0, so slightly better than the average nightclub

Sociability of People: Moderate to Low

General Attractiveness of People (out of 10): 7.3

Pros: I went to this place years ago when it was called Calypso City. It's an entirely new experience now. The decor and setup is surprisingly metropolitan for a West Indian nightclub. There are a few people of all races and stripes in attendance. The crowd is less rowdy (as the new generation of West Indians is more refined) and safety is not an issue. The music is a lot of hip-hop, reggae, soca, and calypso, and is always awesome. There is a lot of potential to meet and party with great people here.

Cons: Like any nightclub, the M/F ratio can deteriorate as the night goes on. The drinks are pricey, but that's how they make their money so it's understandable. The food is also pricey, but they have some West Indian favorites made fresh, even at 1 and 2am, so I was pleasantly surprised by that. Sociability can be tough, because in West Indian culture people are (generally) less open to new people, but the situation is workable and getting better with time.

Overall a quality club experience, especially if you get there earlier.

I just went to a birthday party here and it was SO MUCH FUN. Mainly a West Indian crowd comes here, but they have Spanish nights as well. They play popular songs (Hip hop) , but mostly reggae.

    - Coat check is $2.

    - They have dancers there...half naked but I guess its all good.

    - There usually is a cover charge.

    - There are enough seated areas around to make it a lounge, but the dance floor is pretty big too.

    - There are bouncers, but their professional with business.

    - Great for birthdays! Especially when you get VIP =]
