    Small
    Venue,
    Great booking,
    Poor draft beer list,
And is not long for this cold, cruel world.

Went there for my first time last night, and I really enjoyed it. The service was great. They constantly refilled our drinks. We ordered a bottle of Malbec and that was pretty good. I had the goat cheese salad which was very good. My friends split they goat cheese, caramelized onions, and spinach quesadillas which were amazing and the pizza which was also good.
It was a Saturday night and it was a great low-key place. There supposedly was a band in the back room too but we missed out on that.. I would definitely come back again.

It's a cool venue for concerts. But the food was ok.

I heard what a great music venue this is, and my reaction was "Meh."

I was not impressed with the bar and restaurant. We got there early for a show when few people were in the place, and we still managed to get indifferent service from the bartenders. They were much more interested in chatting with each other and with friends at the bar than paying attention to customers.  The appetizers were fine but not memorable.

As for the music venue part of Maxwell's, the room is "L" shaped, and the place where they stuck the stage is quite narrow. This means that the first two rows of about 20 people get a view and everyone else gets to see the back of their heads. The stage is not elevated much, so it made it tough to see anything.

The sound was good, and I enjoyed the selection at the bar, but I could name a half dozen better music venues within 45 minutes of Maxwell's VIA PATH train.

Came here with a couple of friends who have been before and raved about the food.  All three of us where very disappointed.  The Mac-n-cheese dinner with crusted parm had no crusted parm and was the blandest Mac we have ever tasted.   Salt n pepper please!!!!    The ckn n cheese quesadillas where also bland.. Huge chunk of chicken ( great for those protein lovers that only care about the chicken) barely any cheese.   I could have sworn there were other items that were suppose to be on the quesadillas.   Now let's talk about the Brie app... We sent it back for it has a fishy taste... 2nd shot... Again... It was def the breading...   I will say the pierogies were good, but not enough to make me come back.   NEXT!

First of all, great service. There are waiters posted most places checking on you occasionally. Second, when I walked in, it smelled a little strange. I can't really explain. Third, I'm now a vegetarian, and there aren't enough choices on the menu for us vegetarians. Fourth, I got the vegetarian Shepard's pie on the specials menu for Fridays, and it was cold in the middle. I would recommend coming if you're the party type who likes eating cut up dead animals, but if you're the more normal type person, then I would suggest going to a more quiet place, like Amanda's.

I tried Maxwell's out because of it's history and returned because I really liked the food. The Chicken Pot Pie is delicious and great comfort food! When I first moved to Hoboken - I spent just about every Tuesday at Maxwell's for their $2 taco and $5 margarita special.

The staff is also extremely friendly and helpful.

Updated and upgraded to five stars, because I love this place more and more each time I go.  Good food, solid beer selection, amazing acts for cheap as hell, and the sound is pretty good too.  Where the hell else can I be 10 feet from Thurston Moore for $20?!

Also - and this is really noticeable - every single person I've ever interacted with here has been extremely friendly.  Door people, bartenders, waitresses, bouncers, all of them.  That is certainly not something to take for granted in the NYC area music club scene.

This is a total hipster joint and I'm just not that type of person. However! I went with a group of people to see a friend play in a band and we ended up eating. The food was shockingly good. I was very impressed. I'll come back for sure, but dress the part - skinny jeans, flannel button down and some black rimmed glasses :)

I'm a fan of Maxwell's. You must check out their weekly schedule of events/shows. Go do it now. It's an amazing resource we have here in the Jersey City/Hoboken area and for that they get five stars. I don't do it enough. New Year's resolution.

Ok, also, this place is a straight up institution. Anywhere you go, if you mention Hoboken or Jersey, anyone that's ever been to Hoboken (age restrictions apply) will drop Maxwell's. Case in point last night at a bar in SF. "Oh, I used to live in Hoboken. Maxwell's was my jam," says some random dude at bar. It's like that.

I love that Maxwell's has an attached bar and restaurant to the venue. So convenient. I enjoy their bar area for drinks and some appy apps pre or post show. It's also just really nicely designed and therefore is nice chill spot to catch up with a friend and/or enjoy brunch. Dinner here is a solid choice. Was it the most memorable of meals? No. But, solid pub fare to accompany an amazing music venue. My veggie burger was delicious, though I don't think it was homemade but, maybe and of course the fries that came with it were pretty damn satisfying. I have to try some of their more larger entrees but, the burgers have always done fine by me.

I definitely recommend as it's a great way to keep it local, enjoy some bands both local and not and grab a bite to eat and some drinks! Definitely a must do when living in the Hudson County area.

The first time I stopped there it was OK. Just OK. Your average pub. Except they managed to screw up the Caesar Salad.
The second (and last) time - awful. Smelled like garbage inside. On my way to the restroom I spotted the source - door into the kitchen was open and OMG The Stench!!!! I had to leave immediately.
Oh, and the waitstaff needs a dose of friendliness too. Don't ruin your date night.

Been coming here for a long time. Still one of the best places around to see a show due to the intimacy of the room. Arguably the only good thing about Hoboken along with Yo La Tengo and Eli.

Maxwell's is my favorite place in Hoboken and surrounding areas.

The atmosphere is really nice, no matter if you are going for a drink, dinner or to see a show I always have a great time. I like their gin and tonics and peach iced vodka. When it comes to food I like the veggie quesadilla and burger, my only complaint is that I wish they had more veggie options. My partner loves the blackened tuna. Guacamole con nachos is good too, especially after drinking!

The service is great, friendly and fast, but if you go on a busy night you might have to wait a little and some tables are too close to each other, so I recommend going earlier if you go on a friday or saturday night or before a show.

I was lucky enough to see Roky Erickson live at Maxwell's not once but twice last year! The second time was pretty special since it was just a week after Hurricane Sandy (and the first day I was able to take a proper warm shower in a week!). All the shows I've seen here have been good, and more important, the crowd is mature and respectful, not full of adult babies that don't know how to drink and ruin the night for you.

When my family visited me for Christmas from Spain we decided to take them here for New Years and they also loved it, even though I couldn't keep up with their drinking. Those Maxwell's Big Margaritas are insane, beware!

Hoboken's only (real) music venue, serving southern-styled comfort food, a la pot pies and fried chicken..

The venue itself (in the back) re-defines intimate.
You'll hear complaints about sound quality, but considering the size I'm actually impressed.

Some of the food here undoubtedly sucks and I'm sure the hip staff has turned off more than a few tourists, but that's kinda the point.
For better or worse there's a hint of defiance here, an indifferent middle finger to any wayward fist-pumpers..

Maxwell's is totally a place I'd hang if I lived in Hoboken.

I liked the atmosphere, which I'll dub "classy pub." Rule #1: If you have tin ceilings, you're at least semi-classy. Rule #2: Out-of-season Christmas lights may not be classy on a house, but inside a brick-walled bar, they make everything feel cozy and warm.

The beer list was decent, the liquor selection was good, and the service was prompt. Although the sweet potato fries weren't the best I've ever had, they were hot and well-salted, and sometimes that's really all that matters.

5-stars as a music venue.  If there's someone you want to remotely see and they're playing here... you go... get tickets right after giving this review a +1, useful - funny - cool.

Such a classic place with such history - but the venue portion is tiny, you can get right up and close with your favorite up and coming bands.

Bonus: You'll be able to say 'Oh, you like XXXX band?  Yeah, I saw them two years ago at Maxwells, it was epic"

The restaurant and normal bar - eh, probably 3 stars, but don't go there for that - go see a show there!

Idk what to say about Maxwells. It's not my particular cup of tea but its not offensive and will probably outlast me in Hoboken so I gotta respect that. I've been for some shows, events, and just drinks since its once of the closest bars to my house.

After dining, drinking, seeing bands, and being on stage, I've got to say this is definitely a place to come to atleast once, and especially for live music.

The food tends to be great and the drinks are always good.  Bartenders are always spot on and friendly and know how to make a good drink.

Just be prepared for tight spacing on busier nights and the hassle of finding a spot (unless you wanna actually pay for parking in Hoboken), but otherwise there's nothing this place doesn't have for you.

This place is a North Jersey classic.  Probably the best (if not only) small music venue in Hudson County.  I went on Wednesday for a Yelp Holiday Party.  The event was f'ing FANTASTIC.  Two great bands, The Micks, and The 1&9's, were performing together.  The performance space in the back of Maxwell's is super intimate, with great acoustics.  The bartenders were extremely polite, and FAST, despite a packed house at an "all-inclusive" event.  The owner and the waitresses were passing out food all night, and they were also super nice, despite all the ridiculous drunkards.

After the event, me and my crew stayed for dinner.  I had vegetarian chili, which was very good, and the veggie burger.  The only thing that kept me from giving Maxwell's 5 stars, was the veggie burger.  It was a flat hockey puck, with no flavor, that was probably defrosted.  Also, the menu said it came with some kind of sun-dried tomato or red pepper spread, as well as some sort of olive tapenade.  Well, both my veggie burger, and that of another member in my party, came out plain.  So, everything about my Maxwell's experience is 5 stars, except the veggie burger, which was a big bust.

Was here for the Yelp event so I might be a little biased.

Had a fun time!  The music (The Micks)  were great.  Didn't get to sample much of the food, but that's not why we were there.

Two bartenders were great!  Fast and polite and cheery fellows.

I would recommend this venue if there were any bands playing.

OK food. I came here for the wrong reason. I guess the rave reviews come from the live music ( which by the way is in a separate room) but I'm a foodie (which has been a challenge in Hoboken) so this is more like a 2.5 to 3 star.

On Sundays between 5-8pm they have a Sunday early bird special- you can get a 4 course menu from $14 from the soul kitchen (BBQ food) I got the gumbo as my starter- ugh not even close to authentic (it wasn't spicy and too much of a roux), and the pan fried tilapia (could have done without the weird gravy atop), and two sides of baked beans (canned) and Mac and cheese (very disappointing- I put SALT in it because it was so bland- meaning they didn't use flavorful cheese). And pie for dessert (between cherry and apple- this was actually really good; it wasn't fresh though as it was cold)

They have specials every night but their regular menu is pretty standard.  Burgers, American classics (such as chicken pot pie). Prices are in the low to mid teens.

I didn't have any drinks but looks like they do some interesting cocktails here- one of my friends got a "big iced coffee" which was like a White Russian.

Service also contributes to that as well because our server kinda...sucked. Well he was nice enough and made recommendations, he was slow, uninterested and didn't even bring out our food ( if he had he would have realized we didn't get our cornbread) I had to ask for it to go!

Anyway, not really worth returning for the soul kitchen menu..I'd be killing to try other more basic stuff when I'm feeling I.e a burger

I love the ambiance and the bar area. The "dining" along the window can be very cramped. I have yet to see a show but am hoping to in the future!

The bar staff have always been very nice and pleasant. Food is eh. I love one of the waiters - shorter and has a beard..? Vague I know, but shout out to him he's awesome and is always super nice and accommodating.  I'm sorry I forget your name!

Went here for the James Iha show, he's the guitarist from the Smashing Pumpkins.  The show was awesome!  Great venue, so small and relaxed, and ticket prices were cheap at $17.  Arrived a little early, ordered a blue moon draft from the bar ($5) and hung out for a while in what the hostess called the lounge area, which was a very relaxed way to spend a few minutes.  Overall vibe to the place was very chill, reminded me and my guy of the East Village a little bit.  This venue and the show actually kind of restored my faith in rock music.  I will defiantly be back.

Seriously- how does this place have such high reviews???

I went here once about a year ago and was not too impressed with the food/drinks.  It was just OK.  But it was pretty close to my apartment, so when I saw a living social deal to receive a $30 credit towards food/drinks for $15....I went for it.  I was planning on using it to grab a few beers.  I figured...you can't really go wrong with beer and it's SO close.

Fast foward to yesterday, when I finally tried to use the deal.  It had expired one day before.  I was not expecting them to honor the deal, but thought that they might given that I was only one day late.  What I was expecting was that at the very least I would receive $15 off my bill.  Why would I think that?  Because it is written clearly on the terms of the deal that the paid value did not expire until 2017.  The promotional value had expired.

Not only did the manager not give me the promotional value of $30, but he refused to honor the terms of the deal- AKA that I was still entitled the $15.  And to top it off, he was extremely rude about it.

I'm sorry that you feel like you are loosing money off of these deals. That is no one's fault except your own.  Marketing 101 folks- the purpose of promotions is to get people in the door, wow them so that they come back and pay full price next time (again and again).  I'm betting that you got a bunch of people using the deal and then deciding that it was not worth the return.

Sub par food, low class management, and a cleaning crew that cannot seem to get the old mildew smell out of the place.  A SURE NO GO!!

The only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars is because the waitress was nice!
I went with a girlfriend last night to have a drink and light dinner. We ordered mild wings and got the hot ones, which is totally not the mistake you want to do with wings. We then got salads, mine with blackened chicken that was more cajun than blackened, and my friend with a tuna steak. I think if they opened a can of tuna on her salad it would have tasted better! Her tuna steak was totally dry and cooked through even though it was supposed to be medium rare.

Never again! I don't understand how this place gets such excellent reviews! The atmosphere was soo dingy and uninviting!

I truly truly miss Maxwell's.  Glad I got to a show here on this last trip back to NJ as it had been years since I'd been back.  Many moons ago I lived 4 blocks from here and over my lifetime I've probably seen 100's of shows here.  Still my favorite music venue in this entire country.

Happy to see that it hasn't changed at all.  It is like stepping back in time when you walk inside.  The outside changed while I was still living here.  That makes the place seem much nicer than it is.  Don't get me wrong.  It isn't a dump like CBGB's was.  It is a bar/music venue.  Nothing less.  Nothing more.  Check it out and see what I mean.

Great venue that continues to do an admirable job booking excellent talent to play a 200 capacity room.

I've seen a number of great bands here over the years. Sound is good, atmosphere is cozy, they've got a nice selection of beers & the fact they even have food at all is an added bonus (those judging the place based on food alone are completely missing why it's such a unique Hoboken institution).

Beware: Parking absolutely sucks. It's far easier to park in downtown Manhattan.

Maxwell's is one of the few institutions that keeps me from hating Hoboken all together. It's a great venue to see a band and a great stage to play on. There's a semi-decent selection of beers, and they do a good job with their burger and quesadilla (which are offered free to bands playing).

I will say that finding parking is a serious bitch. Give yourself an extra 30 minutes if you're coming on a weekend night  and you don't want to pay to park in a lot. Sometimes, even 30 minutes isn't enough.

Cozy venue with some good acts that roll through. There's always something going on here worth checking out. I saw Wild Flag here and it was boss. Standing next to Fred Armisen wasn't bad either...

Can't speak on the food but I'll be back to see another show.

Now let me start this out by making one thing clear: I normally wouldn't be caught dead in hoboken.  I have a little more self respect than that.
Yet this place is a diamond in the rough.

Getting to Maxwell's is a pain.  You either have to walk about a dozen blocks through the disgusting gutter of humanity that is hoboken, or spring for a cab if you can find one (you can't just hail one on the street like we're all used to...suburbs, people!  scary!).  But then you get there, go inside, and it's worth the trip...and it's far enough north and east that it's actually in a decent neighborhood.

This place has a lot of shows you might not expect at such a small venue.  Go see one, it's fun, and intimate.  The service is great, all the bartenders have been very nice...you'll meet some fun people who have come in from everywhere to go.  They have a decent bar, and make a good drink...And the layout is such that there's an intimate bit to talk to your friends if you don't feel like being too social.

So yes, getting there is the only bad thing about this place.  I wish it were in manhattan or jersey city, but I'll suck it up and go, because it's worth it.  To the point of this conversation, which I've had many times:
"So I'm going to hoboken tonight"
"Ugh, I'm sorry, why do you have to go there?"
    "Nope, it's a show at maxwell's"
    "Oh, neat, want company?"

This place has been a staple of mine for the past 6 years.  Great unique atmosphere and delicious comfort food.  Usually I'll order the chicken sandwich (with cheese), the quesadilla (with chicken, bean, and jack) or something off the daily specials menu.  They also have an amazing chicken pot pie which will make the people around you jealous.  The daily specials (which is a fairly recent addition) include great burgers and other dishes such as their French Onion Burger, Jersey Burger (with taylor ham), Pesto Chicken Quesadilla, and many others.  Good variety of appetizers, salads, and vegetarian options--their vegetarian chilli is pretty satisfying even for meat eaters like myself.  If you order from the entrees menu, be forewarned they are not going to be fancy, they are simple and fit with Maxwell's unpretentious nature.  But you won't leave hungry.

Probably my favorite thing about Maxwell's is the atmosphere.  Not your typical monotonous Hoboken crowd.  But you don't have to be "punk" to fit in there either....it's the type of place where you could let your guard down and just be yourself.  Funky decor that always features artwork from local artists.  Great jukebox that plays classic music you won't hear anywhere else in Hoboken.  Everyone who works there is really cool.  I've been to a concert there too which was a lot of fun.  It is also fun to have a few drinks or appetizers and sit in the small lounge area on the side.  My wife loves the blueberry lemonade and they always have a few quality beers on tap.

For some reason, this is going to be the first time I write a review for Maxwell's, even though I have been coming here for 6 years.  I first started visiting Maxwell's when I was in college because they have an awesome venue in the back, but also because I was able to sneak a couple of beers. Over the years, it became a place where I would get wasted at then walk 11 blocks back to the PATH. When I walked back in this weekend with my girlfriend, I was reminded of all my memories.

Anyway, enough nostalgia. Maxwell's is the beginning basically of Uptown Hoboken, even though the rest of Uptown isn't for a few more blocks. The music venue in the back doesn't hold more than 200 people but they book great bands to stop in Hoboken before hitting NYC/BK. Even without the food, the crowd at Maxwell's is different from the rest of the typical guido, tool crowd found in Hoboken, so it's a great change. The music is great in the restaurant/bar area too, which is completely different from the rest of Top 40 hits you hear elsewhere.

I have only had food twice at Maxwell's, but each time I've been, someone has said how great their chili is. I haven't had a chance to have it, but someone always does, and someone always raves about it.

Other than that, Maxwell's has good drink specials from time to time and their normal prices are $5-6 for beers and $6-7 for mixed drinks. You still are in Hoboken with the prices, but everything else is better for sure.
