I agreed with the older reviews here. That said, I stopped in for lunch a few times over the last two weeks and Maxwell's has improved. I sampled the hot wings (my primary food group) and they were prepared perfectly. One recommendation would be to create a spicier sauce for the insane like me. Later, I tried the smother pork chop special. Hands-down the best I've ever had. The chef cooked the chops to perfection, then smothers both of 'em with sweet apples. Excellent.
  This is one of those places where you get original recipes prepared 'just like Momma used to'. One letdown was the side salad, that, although portioned well, was prepared with iceberg only. I'd recommend a change to mixed greens on that.
  The servers and bartenders are very personable and respectful. I'll write more reviews as I sample more of the menu. I have not stopped in to Maxwell's Tavern during supper hours, only early afternoon.

my review is this ! Try it for yourself and base your own opinion. new owners, lower prices and no one complains about the meal proportions. Everyone has opinions for good reasons and also bad reasons. Some give bad opinions to guide customers to other locations as favors for personal gains. To me the customer is always right. But if there is or was a problem have the courtesy to go to the owner or manager and let them know. I am quite sure that they would appreciate it. I am speaking for all business owners. How can you know there was or is a problem unless it is brought to your attention. I have been to every bar and restaurant in and around Chesapeake and I think that they are all great in one way or the other. Everyone looks for ways to bring customers in but do it with clean gloves on. Make your own opinion. Thats the only way because you yourself are your best judge, jury, and executioner. Ask yourself, would you want to be judged by one person or twelve. Thank You. Please base your own opinion.

The music is so loud you can't have a conversation without yelling. The food while decent has small portions for the price. The service for the most part was crappy and we were the just about the only patrons of the establishment at that time.
I think I'll wait 5 years before I go again.
We frequent this small traditional bar in Chesapeake, VA to meet the friends and to have a few drinks. We also go there for the lunches for their delicious chicken quesadilla. The drinks are good, but they charge way too much. One time, I was shocked that I had to pay $90 for merely eight drinks - probably by well! We all had just coke & rum and other few cheap made drinks. So, watch out for the prices on the drinks. They do have a few nice pool tables that made up for the prices of the drinks.
