We loved Miyagis. We've probably visited 6-7 times. Each time the service was fabulous and the atmosphere serene.
I've read some of the YELP reviews and would like to clarify a few things. No mayonaise is used in sushi. No tip is automatically added in for couples as applied in previous review.
The food is fresh. Some seafood is chewy because it is more muscular, such as squid.
This is not fast food, so it takes time to make it. Obviously, we have no complaints, and keep returning.
The food is delicious. Try the hot stone appetizer for fun too.
As a sushi lover I was very excited to go use the Groupon I purchased for this restaurant. After a very poor experience I can say with confidence that I will never go to this restaurant again.
We were seated in a timely fashion and the first impression was great. However when we got to our table we were in for a special treat.
There were gnats everywhere on the table and flying around our heads. When our food was served, one of our guests used the soy sauce in her rice. Not only did she get that soy sauce but a sprinkle of gnats as well to season her rice. DISGUSTING, talk about ruining your appetite. Â
We might have been able to look past this had the waiter made it right. Instead she acted less than sorry and neglected to remove the rice from our bill. I also thought it would have been appropriate for a manager to come over and see what he could do for her considering the grossness of the situation. That did not happen either, we were served our bill and we paid and left.
Maybe we just had a poor experience but that one very poor experience has cost this restraunt any future business from me, my family or anyone else who asks me about this place.
I came here on a "friend date" last week, and it was great! The atmosphere is very modern japanese, clean and cool. The waitress was nice and attentive. We ordered oyster shooters as appetizers, not really knowing what to expect, and she helpfully guided us through the proper consumption process. Yum! Then I had a Sapporo and my girlfriend had raspberry flavored sake. Both were tasty and a decent value. We ordered 5 rolls of sushi to share, of which I tried 4: the California roll, the spicy California roll, the Miyagi roll, and the Temptation roll. They were all delicious, but my favorites were the spicy California and the Temptation. The prices were about what you'd expect of a sushi bar, not bad at all. And we had quite a bit leftover. Definitely some of the best sushi in Indy! I can't wait to go back!
The only complaint we had was that we had a voucher for $30. It was expired but still worth the $15 that we had paid for it. Even though it only acted as cash-paid, they wouldn't let us couple it with the 10%-off Yelp offer and seemed irritated that we would even ask. No biggie though; we still had a fabulous time!
I think this could be my favorite sushi in Indianapolis. Â It's a little pricier then some, but a little more money for something worth your time is the reason you go out. Â I also like sushi restaurants that serve up quality dishes besides sushi. Â This place delivers in that department. Â We got the bacon wrapped scallop cake (which was small) and it was worth the visit alone (though pricey). Â If you're in the mood for different courses and sushi then go here.
Review Source:A very frustrating Friday dinner.
Friday early evening - with wife and teenage daughter. Had to sit in the family section - I get that - sadly a couple of mom's with screaming infants were close by - but hey its Friday night and I am in a very relaxed mood. But mom's come on - I have been there and done that and if the kids are going crazy it time to move on.
The two stars have nothing to do with the kids.
So we order - beverages come out fine. Salads, a nigiri/roll order, an appetizer and a kitchen item.
10 minutes later our roll appears along with the kitchen item. Excuse me but how about our salads - "oh sorry I forgot" - it was the start of an excuse filled experience.
Salads arrive - "hey how about the appetizer?" - "its is coming" and it did fifteen minutes later.
"Excuse me but where is the nigiri?" The couple next to us who arrived and ordered 20 minutes after us had been served their large plate of nigiri and sashimi. "It takes time to cook the tako" - this is thirty minutes after the roll arrived. I know it needs to cook - as does the eel I ordered - but it does not cook long. Another 20 minutes pass - this time the excuse is there is only one chef to fix sushi - on a Friday night - and now the place is crowded. There were clearly visible from our table multiple people working the sushi bar.
Still I was in a patient happy mood and enjoyed the discussion at our table - and then the nigiri arrived.
Tako - cold - and worst of all the eel was cold. I love eel - if it is hot or at least warm - cool/cold is not good - and signified that the nigiri got lost in the shuffle and sat around while we were waiting. Not acceptable.
I enjoy Miyagi's rolls. I enjoy the hot rock appetizer and the house salad - but this is not the first time we have had food timing issues - but it is likely the worst and last. They have been around a long time now - the timing - even between kitchen and sushi bar should be fixed - but salads and appetizers after entrees - without acknowledgment or apology - and cold long delayed eel. Lucky to get two stars.
We went on a Monday night for dinner. We were seated immediately and was given the menu. The list of dinner items that they have are pretty good but a lil on the pricey side. They serve sushi by piece. I ordered 1 piece masago, 1 piece sea urchin and 1 piece ika. They were all pretty good but I think they should add more sea urchin and masago. We also ordered NY strip on hot rocks. Other customers were checking it out since it looks so fancy cooking your steak from your table. It was pretty good for an appetizer. We also ordered the special lobster roll. They put real strips of lobster and not just popcorn lobster. That's superb in my books. As for dessert, we ordered honey toast and fried banana with ice cream. The honey toast was just ok. I guess I'm comparing it with the honey toast I had in Vegas which was more authentic. However, the fried bananas were really good since my hubby ate it in 5 Â mins or less. I will definitely come back to this place.
Review Source:My husband and I have gone to Miyagi's twice and I really liked my sushi both times. Our four kids went with us last time to celebrate my 5 year old's birthday (he chose Sushi! yes!) My favorite rolls are the Dynamite and Miyagi. My kids devoured three California rolls. I LOVE the decor and the hip Asian club effect. We will be going back often. Check out their http://Restaurant.com gift certificates to get a good deal!
Review Source:I've been here twice with mixed experiences. Â The menu is great. Â There is a lot to choose from and the prices are reasonable. Â The wait staff is less than great. Â I asked what a few different things were in the rolls I was considering and our server really struggled giving me an explanation. Â The server stood around leaning against the walls chatting with friends when we needed drink refills or needed our check. Â I'll be back because of the food but perhaps I will make it take out.
Review Source:A friend and I went for lunch during a weekday, and while I couldn't use the coupon I had on the lunch specials, they still would've been a good deal. We had the miso soup, house salad, gyoza, and the Boston, temptation, and double crunch rolls. The miso soup was watery, we didn't want to finish it. We asked for the gyoza to be steamed instead of fried and it was still good. Of the rolls we ordered our favorite was the temptation roll. The double crunch roll was not so crunchy, it was rather gooey actually. The only crunch about it was the asparagus and tempura flakes which were mostly laid around the roll. However, the atmosphere and wait staff were pleasant and the experience was overall nice. Maybe not a knock out but I'll have to go back for lunch to give this place another shot. O and yelp has this ranked $$ but I would say it's more like $$$.
Review Source:I haven't been to a lot of sushi places around indy yet, but I do love it and I've had a lot of sushi in my day. Maybe I should have tried out this place when half my face wasn't numb from getting cavities filled, but I was still able to enjoy everything. I got the Superbowl, which is kind of like the sushi/warm weather version of Korean bibimbop (if you don't know what this is, they also serve this at Miyagi's, and I would highly suggest trying it sometime, although I've not tried theirs, and especially on a cold day). The Superbowl comes in a Super big bowl and is a mix of rice, salad and asian greens, pieces of chopped raw fish, scrambled egg cake and topped with a side of spicy sweet sauce). It's so big it's kind of hard to attack at first without making a huge mess....I was appalled that I ate the WHOLE thing! There was some stringy salmon, but overall, filling and fresh tasting. We also shared the Double crunch tuna roll, which was a large portion and very good. The Sashimi regular was pretty standard. Everything came out quickly (I had barely even started the included miso soup and asian salad); the place has a nice ambiance and prices are decent and comparable to sushi places. They have a happy hour during the week and I always see coupons in local papers.
Review Source:I generally love sushi, but I found Miyagi's to be mediocre. I liked the casual yet classy atmosphere of the restaurant, and the service was okay, but the food was just kind of blah. I didn't know you could mess up a California roll, one of my go-to rolls, but my guess is that the ingredients weren't very fresh. Not worth it for the price, so I'll be eating sushi elsewhere.
Review Source:Very good sushi. Specialty rolls are above average and come out fairly quickly compared to some other sushi places. The spicy crab appetizer is amazing! We always get it. It's served with fried wontons that are dusted with a paprika like seasoning. The crap portion is large, we always ask for more chips (they don't charge for extra chips)
This place also has some of the best ambiance, great for a date.
Prices are a little bit higher than some, but then again, its nicer and tastier than most, so its worth an extra buck or two.
I'm not a sushi expert by any stretch of the imagination so in my book if it wasn't bad....it was good, which rings true here. We were promptly seated upon arriving on a Friday night by a friendly host with equally friendly service. A glass of house merlot for me and a large Sapporo for Jason were complimented nicely with the N.Y. Strip hot rock appetizer.....which i'd highly recommend. Then we had a few tradtional sushi rolls and the house specialty... the diablo roll and called it a night.
The big advice I can give is to check out http://restaurant.com before you go, I was able to score a $25 gift certificate for $2, which ended up saving us about half off our bill!!
Miyagi's is definitely the best place to get your Japanese fix. I've been several times and I've always been very satisfied. Â The shrimp tempura roll is absolutely delicious. The miso salmon is usually very good, but the last time i was there i ordered it to go and it was average. Vegetable tempura is pretty good (a little dough-y last time), but the chicken and shrimp is delicious. Â The service is satisfactory but not stellar. Â The presentation is always gorgeous. The place itself is very well thought out and gives a nice modern Asian feel. It's my favorite place for Japanese out of all the places around the Indianapolis area, and I believe I've been to all of them. I always have a good time and good conversation when I'm there.
Review Source:We went after buying a Groupon for the place as we don't tend to venture too far from Broadripple for sushi. Â I tried to be upfront about the Groupon in order to avoid any confusion when the bill came, and I think it turned our experience sour. Â The waiter had a clear look of disappointment when we brought it up, but I shrugged it off. Â The sushi took about 45 minutes to come out (this is going at around 5pm on a weekday) and wasn't that great. Â The rice was cooked hard and the fish was lukewarm as if it had been sitting out all day on all three rolls we had. Â The inside of the restaurant was nice, though. Â Of the 6 places I've had sushi in Indy, it was definitely the worst :( Â Will probably give it another try as others seem to have had better experiences, but will definitely not mention the Groupon!
Review Source:I don't know if we're just extremely unlucky or everyone else is just really lucky. We've tried Miyagi's during both their Groupon coupons now. My suggestion - definitely don't go during the first couple of weeks. When things get busy the kitchen slows down HORRIBLY.
The first time we went we had to wait over an hour for our food, tried to talk to the owner, was waved off, waited another 15 minutes, before finally leaving out of frustration.
Basically the same story for our most recent visit. We called ahead of time and got reservations, still had to wait over 30 minutes to get seated. There definitely weren't enough servers staffed to handle the rush. This time was slightly better, we only had to wait 30 minutes for the food.
However, it was definitely NOT what we were expecting! Â I ordered the sea bass and my friend ordered the shrimp and scallops. I was expecting a half decent slice of fish. Not the overcooked extremely dry parchment that was on my plate. I tried some of my friend's scallops and they tasted very old.
Definitely not going back again, doesn't matter how cheap they make the food.
This might...MIGHT...be the best vegetarian sushi in town. Â
I had never heard of Miyagi until they put out the recent Groupon, but I'm all for discount sushi and for trying new places, so last night we went, Groupon in hand, to see if this was worth a drive to the north side. Â I'm pleased to report back to all of you that yes, it is totally worth driving to the north side to eat here. Â We ordered a crap-load of food here, and the total, not counting the Groupon was $38. Â Considering we got an order of agadashi tofu, miso soup, cucumber plum roll, asparagus and cream cheese roll, kampyo roll, avocado roll, mushroom roll, tomago roll, and a tofu pouch, along with a glass of green tea, I'd say that's more than reasonable. Â They had several varieties of vegetarian sushi that I have never seen, including the really interesting and quite good cucumber plum roll. Â The service here was the perfect level of keeping our drinks refilled and not making us feel rushed. Â The restaurant was very clean - including places only the anal retentive ex-restaurant manager types look, like the window sills and vases.
Okay I'll admit it..I bought the Groupon....expecting the worse and was pleasantly surprised IS DEFINITELY a WINNER!!! The location as nice...right next to Morty's Comedy Club...Decor was pleasant...big vases comfortable chairs and table..contemporary but great for a group of friends or a romantic date.
Now on to the rolls. We purchased 3 rolls...2 big rolls and one simple roll..and all I can say is WONDERFUL!! Huge rolls...too big to fit in one bite...meaty and flavorful. I'm not a big fan of chopped up fish, so I'll stay away from the Super California roll, just because of the chopped up fish, but otherwise everything else was fab. They had a wonderful crab salad that we had a sample of...and for my date nite with the hubby, we'll be getting that.
$10 -$14 a roll wasn't bad....
Service was pleasant and fast.
If you've been disappointed by other sushi places downtown...no worries this place won't disappointed.
We were in town for GenCon and hesitated because of the 25 minute drive out but it was definitely worth it. We are sushi snobs and all three of us judged it to be excellent sushi, especially the yellowtail, salmon, and bluefin tuna. Â There were a couple of dishes there that I'd never seen before that were great (who knew seared yellowtail that you cook yourself on a heated iron plate would be so good?) Our server was cheerful and attentive and it wasn't noisy or crowded. We'll be back next year!
Review Source:Sushi restaurant in Indianapolis is either a hit or a miss, and Miyagi is definitely a HIT! Â The restaurant decor is very Asian chic with a laid back ambiance. Â The wait staff are very nice and so are the owners. Â This would be great place for a night out with your friends or significant other. Â I've been here for lunch and it just doesn't have the same vibe at night but no big deal the food is great .
The sushi, especially the house special, is very modernized. Â The food presentation is beautiful! Â They really emphasize on sauce, every roll has a unique sauce that gives the roll more flavor. Â I usually don't dip my sushi in soy sauce here because the flavor is usually perfect by itself. Â Too much of something good doesn't make it great, sometimes they really drench the rolls in their sauce which would mask the flavor of the other ingredients. Â Overall, I am usually satisfy with my food here, I highly recommend the Lobster Roll and Diablo Roll!
Beside trying the Sushi I also love the Duck wrap. Â It comes with duck slices, mango salad, onions, and mushu wrap. Â You add a little bit this and then a little of that, roll it up and then dip it in the hoison sauce. Â Oh la la it is so good. Â During our last visit they said they discontinue the dish and I haven't return since. Â If you are reading this Miyagi, please please bring back the Duck Wrap!
Everything was great from the service to the food. Â We had several appetizers, entrees, and desserts, and everyone was happy with their food. Â The service was excellent, with tea and waters refilled frequently and the waiter checking often to make sure everyone was happy. Â It was my daughter's and mother's birthday and they left feeling pleased with their experience and dinners. Â Some favorites at our table were the lobster spring rolls, the salmon denkaku, and the ultimate tuna roll.
We will definitely be back for more. Â Great job, Miyagi!
Oh we had doubts ... doubts we did have. Â Wait, I'm not writing in Dr. Seuss style. Â First step ... go to YELP and see what the hub bub is all about. Â Not real thrilled about there only being 12 reviews for the place, especially seeing that the place had really gone down hill since they opened in 2008. Â Sigh ... we wanted sushi darn it! Â
We went, we ate, they scored ... big I tell you, big! Â We started with 3 huge rolls. Â Ultimate Tuna Roll, Special Diablo Roll and Pink Salmon Tsunami. Â Some of the best sushi I have ever had. Â The tuna roll also came with about a cup of the most "butter like" spicy tuna salad.
Plus, just as we were finishing up our rolls the sushi chef handed us the most beautiful roll, in the pics it is the roll that is solo. Â Like no other roll we've had.
Now go and check out the pictures. Â

The staff was friendly. However, the sushi was terrible!
I ordered chirashi, which assorted raw fish, cooked fish served on a bed of rice and my friend got sushi delux. For me, the fish was not fresh at all, even hard to chew. After dinner, I was ok but my friend did not feel well. I am not sure about the cooked fish or other rolls at Miyagi, but its raw fish was awful...not mention the price!!! Anyway, if you like sushi or sashimi, please try else!
Quite possibly, the BEST sushi I have had here in Indy! Â I first was drawn to the spicier selections that Myagi offers, but then delved into the Diablo. Â OH MY GOD! I was in heaven!
It was sweet with a bit of a kick, crunchy, tender, melted in my mouth... Really like a mini-orgasm. Â
They have an AMAZING plum wine Saki as well. Â Very sweet, great selection of rolls, but after I had the Diablo, nothing else will do.
I definitely thought this place was a hibachi joint, imagine my wife and I's surprise when we found out it wasn't. Â Oh well, we didn't have a back up plan, so we figured we'd give this place a try.
AMBIENCE- I must say this place looks pretty nice. Â It's definitely got a trendy, hip feel to it. Â That being said, I figured this was more of a place to be seen, rather than a place to eat, but more on that later. Â A lot of young professionals and hipsters seem to come here, and in the middle of all that, my pregnant wife and I.
SERVICE- there seemed to be a lot of servers working, though the place wasn't all that packed. Â Our server was friendly, though she would go missing for spots at a time. Â We didn't ask her too many questions about the menu, but she was able to answer the questions we did ask. Â Not bad, but certainly not great.
MENU- the menu is not all that big. Â sushi rolls, appetizers, and a couple of entrees (and when i say a couple, I mean like 6-8 or something). Â There seemed to be a decent variety in the sushi rolls, but since my wife was pregnant, we just looked at the entrees.
FOOD- I ended up ordering a scallop dish, and my wife got steak. Â What we ended up getting was not at all expected. Â The food came out in a very modern, aesthetically pleasing manner. Â I quite enjoyed my dish, but my wife had to send her steak back, as it was medium rare, and not medium well as she ordered. Â I understand it costs a lot to just give her a whole other steak, but by throwing the same steak back on the grill, it really lost it's juiciness, and wasn't all that great. Â
OVERALL- this place was voted best new restaurant by Indy Magazine? Â I don't think so. Â I'll pass on coming back to this place.
Celebrity Rating- Jeff Foster of the Indianapolis Pacers
First time I was here it was a mixed experience. Â This time there was NO mistake that there has been a great improvement. Â Please take into account that we were eating at 5:30pm, well before the main dinner crowd and we were the only customers in the place. Â We sat at the sushi bar so we could just chit chat and watch the food prep.
Gone are the smoking hot hostesses, but in their place was incredible customer service. Â We were waited on instantly and treated like kings. Â The timing that the staff had was perfect. Â Ordering, drinks, refills, asking questions, friendliness, all perfect.
We didn't order any of the specialty rolls as I'm on a budget. Â We got the tuna, hamachi, salmon, and shrimp tempura rolls. Â The prices were reasonable and the service was very fast. Â Each of the rolls was perfect, my son even noted the presentation, simple yet refined. Â The flavor was just as it should be, no fishiness, none of that "previously frozen" mushiness. Â
I did notice that the sushi chefs were speaking Spanish, not Japanese, but that shouldn't be a surprise as there are not enough Japanese sushi chefs to go around.
I would highly recommend this place now and it will move to my second favorite sushi place. Â The first fav is Icheban on the southside by my home.
One creepy note, I felt like the Yakuza was watching the whole time we were there. Â But in reality I think the owners were there and making sure that everything was perfect for their customers. Â Judging by an email that I got after my last review, they really do want to make sure the experience is positive.
I have been here three times and each is quite nice. Â They do put great effort on presentation and style. Â The food is very good, but somehow is not "Sakura good". Â If you sometimes think that Sakura is a little dingy, or dim, or tired, give miyagi a try. Â
We ate from the sushi menu and the app section. Â The lobster spring roll is quite good. Â The King Kani was also a pleasant surprise. Â The citrus salad has been had each visit. Our son devoured a steak done in teriyaki style. Â
Look for specials posted at the door, also I have been told they are big on two for one coupons in the mail box spammers.
I went to Miyagi for the fourth time last Saturday and it will likely be my last.
With the exception of my first visit, I have always experienced a long wait for service. On Saturday, I had to contact a manager to have our order taken, as we had waited for 20+ minutes without so much as a drink order. He apologized and brought a server to our table within a few minutes, but did not offer any other amends for the delay. Our food was expedited and was excellent, which somewhat made up for the long wait.
The final straw, however, was looking at our online bank statement and seeing that someone at the restaurant had inflated our 20% tip an additional $10. I will be going to the restaurant today for an explanation in person, and unless it's a truly great excuse, I will not be returning and will share this story with friends, family, and co-workers.
I came here with my husband's family for dinner after a day full of Black Friday shopping. Â It was ok. Â Here is what I didn't like:
The special roll selection = almost every special roll had either mayo or was tempura. Â Since I had already consumed about double the normal calories the day prior, I was hoping for something a little bit healthier.
The service = The server came over immediately to get us drinks. Â Since we were chatting, we needed a few more minutes. Â He came over again, sorry, we still aren't ready. Â Once we finally placed our order, it took forever for the drinks to come out. Â
The same thing happened with dessert. Â Four of us ordered dessert. Â Three of us had finished ours and my husband's still wasn't ready! Â At that point, we asked for it to be taken off the bill. Â I was a little surprised that the server wasn't more apologetic.
This is the only place I've found in Indy that does sweet potato tempura rolls. Â I love that they're inside-out and garnished with sesame seeds. Â
Our server was incredibly overbearing, and the kitchen made several mistakes (with our dishes and with surrounding tables too). Â Those rolls override all of the service glitches though.
I went there for lunch a few days ago. Â It must have been the server's first day, that and she looked very young. Â I think the rest of the servers were probably a lot better. Â But it took us forever to order, to be checked on, and I think she forgot to place our order. Â
Anyway, the sushi itself was okay. Â A bit expensive, different style of ordering, but not a lot of specialty rolls. Â The rolls were a tiny bit sloppy (i'm picky) and they tasted okay though. Â The atmosphere was the best part, nice modern contemporary decor. Â In the end though, it's all about the food.
