yea the other reviews have it pretty much correct. this place is pretty gross. i got dragged here by a group of guys and ended up showering the smell of cigarettes and grossness off of me as soon as i got home. bathroom wise- ya no. i didn't even attempt it. one look and i turned around and held it for the rest of the night. YUCK!
having said this....it is pretty much just like every other gross irish dive bar. and i use to LOVE them....i think after I hit 25, the beer goggles came off and the charm melted away.
We stopped into Mo and O'Malleys after the bayou boogaloo festival. We sat at the bar, two bartenders on duty were a short female, gray hair, long braid, and an older woman with a German accent. At one point, one of the people in our party ordered a glass of wine. It was terrible, so after one sip she asked the gray haired woman if she could exchange it for something else. The bartender said no problem, and we got a strongbow cider instead. Â
At the end of the night when we asked for our check, they just gave us a receipt with the total, nothing itemized. Â I asked to see the itemized one, and discovered he wine had been charged anyway. We pointed it out to the bartender, and she said " yes, you ordered it". We noted that she had agreed to exchange it for another drink, because the wine was terrible, and even took the full glass of wine back. She said, "that's our policy, you ordered it, you have to pay for it", refused to take it off. Â
The place was pretty dirty, 3 of their draft beers were not even available, and drinks were on the expensive side for a dive bar vibe. Â There are plenty of other options on Granby street, I'd give this place a wide berth.
Alright, I like this place because it's a dumpy little irish bar. They have great musicians that come in and sing irish songs all night long. What's wrong with that? So the carpet is funky, and the tables are wobbly and crooked, the bathrooms aren't exactly spotless, and they keep half of the bar "closed" because they aren't busy enough to open the whole area. But you know, this is usually our last stop when we are downtown enjoying other bars. So maybe by the time we arrive here, we are too far gone to realize how awful the place is. It doesn't matter to me though, I like it here and the drinking is fun!
Review Source:My kind of dive. Yes, it's a dive, and that's perfectly ok. Why? Well for one, because you don't eat at a dive you just drink there. You're certainly not going to bring your mother here... It is a good place to party though and well worth stopping in for a beer or two while you're walking this end of Granby St.
Review Source:Ugh- gross. Not exactly a huge fan of this place. I came here for an ugly christmas sweater bar golf event and this was one of the bars we had to attend. I spent an hour too long here. Ugly decor (bras, gross underwear, and the walls lined with dollar bills...I'm assuming it's their back up money for when this place goes under). Old, cranky bartenders, and the place is just dirty. I had a 7&7 and an Irish car bomb. The drink was strong and I'll admit it was good. The Irish car bomb...well...you can't really mess that up, can you? Not one of my favorite places.
Review Source:Ugh... I hate doing this but geez...I thought this place was a dump. Dirty tables. Tables that didn't even stand evenly. Graffiti all over the bathroom walls (I didn't feel that the writings on the wall were meant to give the place character). The waitress serving my friend was even rude at one point. He was in the middle of a conversation and she rudely yelled hello twice to get his attention.
Unless it were a group event I wouldn't go back there.
I've only been to Mo and O'Malley's once, and I do plan to go back even though there were a few issues. My husband and I went in last Friday evening around 630. The place was absolutely packed--there was a large group of veterans in town for an event as well as the Granby Street Experience festival. This place looks old and quaint and has a real pub feeling. That's definitely a plus--it's not stylized in any way that I could see. It really has that authentic, hole-in-the wall pub feel. There were cobwebs in the windows (albeit small ones). The ceilings and walls are painted kelly green and there's a tiny stage. Graffiti-ed dollar bills are plastered all over the walls. Made for interesting reading as we waited for our food! I didn't see any TVs but my back was facing the bar...if they have TVs, this would be the kind of place you could probably watch soccer matches and feel like you're in the UK.
I ordered a Smithwick (draft...kind of watered down tasting) and fish and chips. My husband had the fish and chips as well. It was pretty good, actually. The food was hot and fresh. The fries were crispy without being too greasy or overcooked. My first impression of the fish was that it was from a freezer (it was shaped like that fish you get in the school cafeteria, you know what I mean?). Anyway, it didn't taste as if it had come from a freezer, so I was happy about that. There was coleslaw as an accompaniment (pretty tasty) and a nice tartar sauce. (I like vinegar on my fish but our waitress was slammed, so I just let it go this time.) For the affordable price of the food, I was satisfied.
Because the place was so packed and they only had one cook, it took nearly an hour to get our food. The waitress was very nice and accommodating--I felt pretty sorry for her as I'm sure she was getting the blame for it. We were actually getting ready to cancel our order when she suddenly appeared with our food. Considering that there was a festival on that evening and with it the likelihood of more business, I would have thought they'd plan to serve a higher volume of people. I'll try it again and see what happens!
I've been here only one time, and based on that one evening I should come here more often. A girlfriend of mine and I decided to stop by and meet up some friends after we saw a movie at nearby MacArthur Center. Upon walking in I felt like this was the most rustic, cozy, and welcoming bar in the area. We were treated to a live act, a soloist who's a pretty good guitarist and singer. He belted out tunes new and old and I enjoyed his request hour.
Since I've only been here once I don't want to toot its horn until I've had a chance to hang out there again. But based solely on that one evening I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would recommend it to anyone that's craving an Irish bar experience.
I've only come to Mo's when Don Bunch is playing, so my perspective on this place is a little skewed. I can't tell you how many Friday nights I've spent here, but each one has been entertaining and hysterical. St. Patrick's Day is also a lot of fun with Don.
Service is always slow and frustrating. In short, the drinks come out when the drinks come out. With that in mind, my friends and I have made it a habit to double up on our orders. This causes much confusion later on, since everyone is thoroughly drunk and no one is sure who ordered how many pints Guinness or Kilkenny. I think I drank 5 but I ordered 8...?
Food is run of the mill pub fare. I don't think I've ever ordered anything resembling the word "fresh" here, but honestly why would you? Get a basket of fries and call it a night. Unless the kitchen closed early and without notice (which happened to us a week ago).
But like I said earlier, I only go when Don Bunch is playing. It's Irish, loud, participatory, and inappropriate. That, mixed with good friends and a staggering amount of stout beers, makes for a great night.
Also, never ever stand on the chairs. You will get yelled at by the hardworking ladies that run the place, and you don't want them on your bad side.
When you live close to Downtown Norfolk and like Irish Pubs you will come to find out that you are either a Mo & O'Malleys fan or a Jack Quinn's fan. Â Let me tell you I am NOT a Mo and OMalley's fan. Â My boyfriend on the other hand is... He loves this place but after a long discussion as to why on earth he favors this place over Jack Quinn's I have just come to the conclusion that he went to the bar first and has some weird sense of loyalty to it, not necessarily because it's a better irish pub. Because I assure you it is not better in any way shape or form. Â It has gotten to the point that when we don't even go out together anymore because he wants to go to Mos and I want to go to Jacks. Â
The drinks at Mo and O'Malley's are wildly overpriced, poorly made and the worst thing about it is the service. There is an older lady with short dark hair who bartends there. I can only assume that she is family to the owner or something along those lines because she has got to be the rudest bartender I have ever come into contact with. Scratch that she is the rudest person I have ever encountered in the food service industry. The fact that she is so rude and works in a field where tips for being efficient and friendly are a big part of her income you would think she would be nicer and not so slow.
I'm really not sure what her name is, but if you have ever been to this bar then you have encountered this horrific bar wench. my best advice is to stay away from this bar, their overpriced drinks and their grumpy staff. Â Jack Quinn's is a couple blocks down Granby Street, their drinks are cheaper and their bartenders are WAAAAY nicer...and a whole lot better looking. Â Pass on this Pub
Mo & O'malleys has a special place in my heart. It's a hole-in-the-wall type of place but that only adds to the appeal in my book and its far more Irish than certain other "Irish pubs" on Granby st. The live music never disappoints, and that is the main attraction. Decent beer selection, never had the food, but that's not what I go there for anyway. I go there to drink beer and listen to lewd Irish drinking songs and for that I award M&O's five stars.
Review Source:Disgusting food, would never return!
The outside of this "pub" was promising. It seemed to appear like an authentic Irish pub, but, upon entrance we were instantly disappointed. It looked like a cheap bar with horrible decor. The food was horrible and I mean very bad! as were the decorations. The one positive thing about this place was the live music.
Not a terrible place for knocking a few back, but the mixed drinks are not very strong and the service is kinda shoddy.
The bartender also served me a drink that had 2 FRUIT FLIES in it! I don't know how she didn't see them... they were clearly visible black specks floating on top of the ice. I brought it to her attention and she apologized profusely & quickly made me another drink. Eeps.
Let me drop a little knowledge on you guys real quick:
"Mo" is the tall, dark haired, no-nonsense GERMAN woman; and "O'Malley" is someone she made up.
You can't trust a German who owns an Irish Pub!
We decided to take the party to this unique Irish pub on Friday night. There was basically no one there' just a few people randomly sprinkled around. They had a good deal going on with the PBR cans but they drafts were a little expensive at $5 a pop. I liked the atmosphere in this bar but I think it's unfair to pay the same price for all draft beers across the board. There was an Irish singer playing the guitar the night which was a nice touch to the whole experience. Probably won't make it a point to go back though due to pricing.
Review Source:This is a tried and true Irish pub. Loud, sing alongs, casual -- it's about drinking and good times. I like that the crowd is easy going, given that the rest of Granby Street is more swanky. I've even been on a Wednesday night and the place is happening. There is usually a singer/entertainer to liven up the place and make you laugh. He must be good because there are lots of bras hanging from the wall. I've never eaten here. I don't think they have much of a late night menu. The drinks are reasonably priced. I usually just have a beer. This is a place to go when you just want to kick back and relax.
Review Source:Don't listen to all the moaning below - it's an effing Irish Pub people. Â This is a fun bar on Granby and it is certainly worth a stop as long as you leave the rod that's firmly placed up your arse outside. Â I'll come here a couple times a month - food is pretty good at midnight after having a few; however, I'm not a major fan of Irish food so I'm not jumping up and down about it. Â If I could recommend anything it's the fried cheese sticks.
Review Source:My wife and I were looking for an alternative to typical hotel food and as we were walking up Granby Street we saw this Irish Pub. We both enjoyed the food although I can't really remember what my wife had however I had the Irish Stew and it was great.
We stopped in around 5:30 PM and we were the only people in the place other than the staff. That was a bit strange however if we happened to be in Norfolk again it is a place I would go back to.
It's unusual that I'd give a place in which I consider myself a regular 3-stars, but here's the scoop:
There's a guy who plays guitar here named Don Bunch. He is hilarious, entertaining, and knows how to work a crowd. His shows are always enjoyable, and he plays here very frequently. If it weren't for him, I probably wouldn't make the trip out. He has a calendar on his website at http://www.dbunch.com/
Overall, typical pub food, although the shepherd's pie is good and deserves mentioning. I'm more of a mixed drink girl, and I think the mixed drinks are a little on the high side for the selection that they have so I usually sip while I enjoy the show so I don't have to spend the money. (Which I don't hesitate to spend the money if the service is worth it, which brings me to my next point....)
The service is pretty much garbage. There are two servers, a guy and a girl, and the guy is definitely more pleasant of the two, which isn't saying much. If it weren't for Don Bunch, I wouldn't even give this place 3 stars.
This is your typical pub - unfriendly service, dirty bar, and very casual atmosphere. You can really come and enjoy a drink here on a cold winter day - there's someone playing on a guitar singing silly songs while those sitting at the bar are getting hammered.
Few gripes with this place - I'm not sure if we were just there on a really busy night (after the Marine Corps Ball let out) but the service was super shitty. My guy friends waited for over 15 minutes for anyone to look their way so finally I screamed ''Hey! Can we get some drinks here??" so a bartender was forced to help us. If they were continuously pouring drinks I'd understand but I think they just didn't have sh*t under control.
Not sure how much drinks here were but I can't imagine them being too pricey. I'll come back here if I'm in the mood for pub atmosphere.
I'm not used to beer served at room temperature but after the initial shock of it I found out the Tennet's Lager was pretty darn tasty that way. As far as smoke goes we were there early and it really wasn't bad at all, quite low on the smell factor if you ask me. I ordered the Irish Stew and it was pretty good. Seasoned well and filling. Overall I was impressed and will visit again when I'm in the neighborhood.
