The most delicious chocolate in town. A little pricey but worth it - you truly get what you pay for. My favorite is the Mayan sipping chocolate with a little whipped cream on top. The vegan Thai-style truffle is also amazing. Staff is super friendly to boot. My once a month treat, wish it could be more often but if it were, I wouldn't fit through the front door....
Review Source:There's a scale of chocolatiers....downhome favorites that keep it simple (like Alaska Wild Berry down the street), and more 'art-noveau' creations that stretch the imagination. Â Modern Dwellers falls closer to the latter. Â The presentation is beautiful, there is usually a topping that reflects the ganache or filling (ie orange peel, nuts, barley, salt). Â However, I am not a dark chocolate kind of gal, and the great majority of their truffles are dark. Â It's too rich and bitter for me. Â I've realized I enjoy truffled creams more than inventive ganaches. Â I've also tried their white chocolate citrus bar because it was on sale in another shop, and let's just say, I understand why it was on sale. Â The flavors in general just don't come together; they are too powerful in their own right and do not complement each other. Â Fran's chocolates in Seattle is better.
Review Source:It's an funky eclectic place full of fun art and chocolates. I am not much of a chocolate eater but got a half spicy mocha with a few chocolates. Blueberry, raspberry, Ethiopian berebere (yucky), hazel, goat cheese, and cranberry. My friends thought the goat cheese was too strong, though I couldn't even taste it. Weird. Â It was a good time talking with friends over sweets, but it didn't make me want to come back right away. I didn't think the ordeal was too expensive for gourmet chocolates. 6 chocolates and a mocha was about $30. Again, not muchof a chocolate fan but it was a good new experience.
Review Source:When it's freezing outside, there's nothing like coming in from the cold to a nice and thick cup of drinking chocolate. Â Oh yeah, baby, this stuff is liquid yum. Â Stuff to crave and taunt you all day long. Â I've tried both of their drinking chocolates: Â The Spicy Mayan that packed a nice wallop in the spice department, however can be overwhelming and difficult to finish an entire demitasse. Â However the Silky Smooth version hits it perfectly! Â Same stuff, just no spice. Â Long, lucious and velvety bliss, ahhhhh! Â I could drink this constantly.
Of course they have intriguing and deadly fine truffles. Â In the several visits I managed, I had the: Â Pistachio with lemon, White Chocolate Cherry, Thai Lemongrass Coconut, Ethiopian Berber (beautiful heat!) and Goat Cheese. Â This isn't even scratching the surface and I'm sad :( that I wasn't able to try them all. Â So much chocolate, too little time. Â I've been to both stores and this one's my favorite. Â I just like the layout better and I think they have more inventory. Â Check out their chocolate squares and other fine items from across the globe that make perfect gifts. Â They also have a bunch of girly girl jewlery and art for purchase.
If I lived in the cold, I'd come here often for my morning cup of Cho (you know, the Korean cousin of Joe?) Â Mmm, chocolate never tasted so divine.
What a gem! Â A friend and I took a two week trip to Alaska last month and on this particular visit, I decided to see what Yelp had to recommend - I wasn't in the know the past two times I was up here. Â
In toodling about, somehow I stumbled on the Modern Dwellers reviews. Â A chocolate lounge? Â In Anchorage? Â In the non-downtown part??? Â Walking distance from my hostel, a movie theatre and an amazing pizza/beer joint ? Â Scribble scribble, it was on my go-to list.
After landing, Â I had a few hours before my friend arrived and chocolate was first on the to-do list. I quickly checked in to the hostel and then walked over. Â Upon walking in, I was greeted cheerfully by one of the girls behind the counter. Â She offered me a sample of the drinking chocolate, full concentration. Â When you get it as a beverage, they dilute the mixture with half and half or milk or something fun like that. Â This doesn't water down the taste - it's more about making it easier to drink because full strength has the texture of melted chocolate (not that I would mind having a cup full of that - it was freaking delicious).
I opted for the spicy drinking chocolate because I've seen Chocolat and I knew I'd be much more likely to meet a hot, guitar playing gypsy with soulful eyes and a boat if I went the spicy route. Â While I'm still waiting to meet the hot gypsy, the spicy chocolate was a win. Â So much so that when my friend arrived and we went on to our gnarly "Holy Hell what did we get ourselves into" backpacking portion of the trip the following week, the thought of another cup of that spicy hot chocolate kept me going. Â Even after the trees ate one of my shoes. Â Even when I knew what I needed more than chocolate was a shower and probably some pizza and beer followed by another shower.
But rewind to that first taste and the fact I still had time to kill. Â I got the spicy chocolate as a beverage and some truffles too (they make them there!) - the Berbere, the purple infusion and their vegan option. Â All were superb but the Berbere was my favorite - it was fresh and spicy. Â Notice a pattern? Â
The decor, ambiance and overall set-up of the shop are spot on. Â A diverse and eclectic collection of art, jewelry and various crafts were tastefully arranged throughout the lounge - all available for purchase. Â A variety of other chocolate is on display as well. Â The furniture matches the vibe of the shop - it's playful but comfortable as well.
I had a chance to get my spicy chocolate after the backpacking trip (and a shower, pizza and beer) - just as wonderful as the first time. Â Whether you're passing through or in Anchorage year round, if you like chocolate, coffee shops or lounging, check this place out. Â It's worth it!
My friend gracie face introduced me to the berry bar and I am officially hooked on this chocolate square.
The best chocolate I ever had! You think one piece is enough, but I keep on eating it till it's gone.
65% cacao organic berries.. mulberry, goji, and goldenberry.
So, good anyone one visiting me from Alaska has to go to the store and bring a stack of bars to me!
I don't know if they ship... it might melt on the way here to Texas! =(
I am down to two bars left now...must savor it.
I tried the smoke salmon bar too... a very unique taste, but not a favorite. Smells like salmon.
The truffles and chocolate drink is a must to try!
The truffles here are very unique! Â Everything I eat was good, even the wasabi truffle. Â It is a great place to pick up a gift for a chocolate lover. Â They also have coffee,craft-funky jewelry, and cute handcrafted cards.
My only complaint is the price. Â A box of four truffles comes in at $12, so $3 a piece. Â Though I must say, the flavor combos are unique and require extreme chocolate skills.
Both the locations of this hipster joint are cool in their own way, especially for the art and crafts they deal in. I don't know if I would necessarily hang out there to read or surf the web, but their spicy hot chocolate is pretty tasty, or as they call it "drinking chocolate". The high end truffles are a bit silly, particularly the ones with little anchovies on them, but whatever, they're fun to try if you have an extra $10 to drop on an ounce of sugar. If you have a female friend who needs a birthday present, you could do worse than splurge on a handful of these hand made chocolates.
Review Source:The yelp iphone map is off -- it's actually the corner of 36th st/ old seward highway.
But.... chocolate lover's dream meet coffee house. It feels so comfy inside with the tables, local artwork, and local handicrafts -- that you swear you're in a coffee shop. But... everything here is pretty much chocolate.
The staff was very friendly -- and gave me a sample of the Dark Silk drinking chocolate. They add warmed milk and whipped cream -- and voila, you've got yourself a great tasting hot cocoa.
I had another dark chocolate oatmeal cookie to go  -- which was amazing!
Modern Dwellers is simply THE best place to hang in Anchorage. I was fortunate enough to find this hip, little chocolate shop (a girl needs her fix!) when it first opened and have been a faithful devotee ever since! I adore the drinking chocolate (but not the extra hours at the gym I have to spend to keep it from settling on my thighs)!
It was a bitterly cold morning last week and after a  l o n g  weekend of work and drudgery, I was feeling as bleak as a winter's day in Wasilla. I thought I would perk myself up by visiting the NEW Modern Dwellers on G Street. As I manuevered down ice-rink like roads, I drifted into a nearly-euphoric state imaging the taste of the delicious drinking chocolate on my tongue.  I was so happy to find a parking meter across the street and my happiness melted like a 61% Guittard Cacao Wafer in boiling cream.  when I saw that the store didn't open until NOON. Dejected. Despondent. Depressed. Adrift on a sea of misery and hopelessness. I considered driving down 5th Avenue until I hit water, but somehow managed to pull myself together (probably with the promise of another euphoric chocolate encounter on another dreary day).
Fortunately, there was always tomorrow and lunchtime chocolate (which is almost as good as breakfast chocolate but not nearly as great as dinner chocolate)!
PROS:
Fabulous chocolate.
Fun and funky atmosphere that reminds one of being in San Francisco, Seattle, New York, or some other swanky city.
Friendly staff.
Local artwork on the walls.
Now in TWO locations!!
CONS:
As another reviewer mentioned, the prices are a bit high, especially for the Guittard chocolate. Â I personally do not mind splurging on an occassional $5 truffle, because they are tiny, melt-in your mouth masterpieces....but $15+ for the Guittard Discs that sold for $9 at my Fresh Market in Florida...well, that's a bit too much.
There are NO other cons. Â Modern Dwellers is fabulous. Â They are my inexpensive alternative to therapy or SAD lights! Â (And far more satisfying)
Whether you are a chocolate snob fixated on filling that craving, of simply wanting a caffeine rush - Modern Dwellers Chocolate Lounge can meet all of those desires and more. Â I was introduced to Modern Dwellers by a friend for the first time today. Â Stepping into the midtown location greets you with an ambiance of hip, fun, and urban. Â Oversized plush and funky high backed chairs coupled with eclectic artwork make it an enjoyable place to simply hang out or come to after a cold winters day.. Â
Modern Dwellers offers not only artisan chocolate and an espresso experience but also a variety of gourmet flavored truffles made right in the store. Â On this particular day I was picking up a gift for a friend. Â Not having been there before I quickly admitted to the barista this was my first time there and was quickly met with a smile and a very helpful attitude that put me right at ease. Â
Of  course I decided to try one of their drinking chocolate sensations.  After all I have long been a fan of spicy chocolate, however was saddened many years ago when my favorite cafe went out of business.  I have been searching without success since then.  A place that had a drink that could make my taste buds sing after just a few sips.  And I'm happy to say that Modern Dweller's spicy chocolate offers exactly that. Â
I definitely will be returning. Â Quite simply Modern Dwellers offers frothy delights that are pure bliss.
I stopped here with my sister-in-law while I was visiting her in Alaska. She loves this place and I was excited to try out all the interesting flavors.... uhhh anchovy truffles? really? We actually ended up going to this location, as well as the downtown location. I liked the atmosphere of the downtown location better, but this location had more truffle flavors in stock, as well as more seating. As for the anchovy truffles... well, let's just say I didn't end up really eating the anchovy at all. But I try just about every other chocolate. The Tokyo Tango was my favorite. The Salmon Surprise was surprisingly good. And the Raspberry Grove was the most amazing raspberry chocolate truffle I've ever tasted. If you've ever tried the Ghirardelli raspberry chocolate, the Raspberry Grove puts it to shame. The Maya drinking chocolate was scrumptious.
Review Source:The atmosphere was calming and the interior very inviting. Nice assortment of various chocolates on display(not a lot, but enough to browse,) The staff was pleasant, and the seating was pretty comfortable towards the front. nice home furnishing and miscellanous knick knacks, but not overdone. We sampled the spicy and mild drinking chocolate, and went with the mild. Subtle and relaxing.
Review Source:Modern Chocolate Dwellers opened a new location and this one is in downtown Anchorage, across from Uncle Joe's Pizza and Darwin's Theory bar. This place will get a lot of tourist traffic in the summer and is a good location for them. I wandered in and got the free sample of liquid chocolate. I thought it was wonderful but also, to me, it's just like melted Cadbury Dark (or Bourneville as it's called in UK), which I also love. The worker behind the counter was very pleasant and knowledgeable. I felt obligated to buy something after the sample and I got the raspberry truffle with lacquer finish in a bluish, iridescent gleam. I took it back to the office so I could try it in private: It was good. Worth $3? I don't know but it's appeal is in the fact that it's a special little boutique sort of place that you can go to for a secret little treat once in a while.
Review Source:I'm not surprised I have to make another reference to "stuffwhitepeoplelike.com" in a Yelp review but man, it is so hard not to!
Anchorage has got to be the Northwestern Mecca for All Things Hippie slash Yuppie, what with our usage of recyclable grocery bags, our fancy wine bars, and now our chocolate lounges. I think the city is on a desperate attempt to inject some sort of fashionable interest in food, shopping and drinking, but that doesn't negate our muddy, snow-encrusted boots, our sexy North Face Michelin-style jackets, nor our total indulgent delights as we eagerly participate in classic, urban hipster activities. And Modern Dwellers totally fits into that!
I was wary at first - drinking a cup full of chocolate? Now, like any normal human being, the thought of pure, delicious sugar sounds pretty freakin' awesome, but I had never dared to go in alone. Was it fear of the unknown? What mysterious, chocolate-ridden forces lay behind those dark windows with a perpetual "NOW OPEN" sign gently flapping in the wind? Needless to say, I didn't enter until a Dwellers-addicted friend offered to treat me.
I was impressed with the layout, decor and offerings, and unenthusiastic about the less than five words uttered by the bored-looking register-jockey. One of my long-term jobs has been a coffee barista, and yeah, it gets tiring having to great everyone who pops their head in a door, but some suggestions or even a hello would have been nice while I stared dumbly and blankly at the menu. Luckily, my expert chocoholic ordered what I wanted, which was savored and guilty enjoyed. Really, topping it with whipped cream was probably the greatest combination ever - but one that sent me on a shameful trip to the gym, and while I pumped furiously on the elliptical, the thought and taste of that amazing, melted goodness never left my memory.
One thing of note - and this reflects on my previous statement of Anchorage's lust for hipsterness - is holy crap, some of this stuff here is just ridiculously expensive. The place hocks fancy chocolate bars (duh), and one specific brand is hilariously overpriced. I know this, as my own work sells the exact same chocolate bars, and Dwellers is charging an ostentatious double-the-cost for 2 or 3 ounces of Guittard chocolate.
But, I suppose that's what we pay for! Huddled up here in the Frozen North, we just love taking these trends, bending over, spreadin' cheek and begging them to charge our platinums.
I have got to give the owners props. The moment I drove by the yet unopened building that said "chocolate lounge", I pulled in to find out when they were going to open! I waited, and waited, and finally they opened, and we sampled that sweet, spicy, delicious Mayan drinking chocolate for the first time.... I'm going to miss this place next Christmas, as we will have moved to Florida.
The people are extremely friendly and helpful, the sample is a must, even if you aren't intent on buying anything at all. Go there simply for the sample.
There is a lot of artwork, and in all I love the interior decor. Very non-Anchorage, it's what we needed! A taste of modern art, and a whole lot of heavenly chocolate.
Oh god, I'm drooling.
I found the God Spot and it lives at Modern Dwellers! Â Funny, because I don't like a lot of anything, but upon arrival the smiling clerks sampled me a devastating (and complimentary!) dose of liquid chocolate, thereby earning my maximum yelpable devotion (that is, 5 stars and a return trip).
The truffles are gorgeous, $2.95 a pop, but so rich and holy that 1 will serve 4. Â The Margarita is true to form, the salmon and anchovy are a cute surprise, the "lacquered" choices shimmer like cupcakes from Wonderland.
It's also a comfortable setting for enjoying all that liquid heaven. Â Groovy handcrafted furniture, interesting art pieces, mom-happy jewelry & giftage, and, of course, a long bar of chocolate bars.
I visited Modern Dwellers for the first time this week and I just loved it. They have beautiful cards, artwork, and other gift-y things. The decor is lovely and hip. And the truffles! Oh. The truffles. My friend and I got a four truffle gift box. I had one with lavender blossoms sprinkled on top and we both had to try the dark chocolate truffle with a bit of smoked salmon on top -- it was to unusual to pass up. I had an excellent cappucino and my friend's spicy mocha was delicious. I can't wait to go back. I'm so glad to see interesting and creative spots like this popping up in Anchorage.
