Just was not impressed at all. Over priced and it wasn't even THAT good. Yea the rolls are big but what good is it if they aren't delicious? If I'm going to spend almost $30 on sushi it better blow me away. Disappointed!!

My wife & I came over to the Summit Monster Sushi while we were last staying with her sister in NJ.  There are a great deal of up scale (bordering on snooty) places in this area of Summit.  It is all very lovely but also pricey with a tourist trap feel to certain sections.
All things considered, & even though it was a little pricey, Monster Sushi did not disappoint & we had a nice & varied lunch in there.  The service was good & friendly.  My Uni (one of my sushi favorites) was very well done & quite fresh.  My wife enjoyed her Spicy Tuna roll combo, & they had some nice hot dishes as well.
The decor is fun & the BYOB an option worth doing when you visit.  They offered city style maki rolls (albeit, at city prices.) & a couple of Omakasa options that were very expensive but exciting to experience, if you are willing to toss caution to the wind.

If you want sushi, walk three blocks over to Taka Sushi where the prices are lower and you can actually taste the fish.

I stopped in Monster Sushi today for lunch and should have walked out as soon as I saw that every roll was $2 or 3 more than other restaurants in the area.

Instead I stayed and spent $20 on edamame, a soda, and ONE Alaska roll.  For reasons I cannot comprehend it took over 15 minutes for my roll to arrive, even though the restaurant was not busy.

As earlier reviewers have stated - it is not high quality sushi.  Usually an Alaska roll is 1/3 tuna, 1/3 avocado, and 1/3 cucumber.  This was mostly cucumber, with a touch of avocado and a small slice of tuna.  It was loosely rolled.

Perhaps the rest of the menu is better, but I would not return for sushi.

Significantly below average; and NOT worth the price.  Considering they have no beer/wine license, spending $55 for one person is not inexpensive.  And the quality of fish I got for that price was even more disappointing.  I am always leery of sushi bars that have their fish PRE-SLICED (as Monster sushi does).  The sweep shrimp was the most feeble, meager looking thing I have ever seen.  They were honestly the size of a nail.  I felt badly eating it because I felt like a bully picking on a weaker, younger kid.  The scallop sashimi was bland, and the one roll I got was average.
It's the kind of place that figures they'd make up for their lack of quality with quantity of roles.  They have 40 different kinds of rolls.  I don't consider it enough for a sushi restaurant to simply re-package pre-sliced bland fish in 40 different ways.
My advice, go somewhere else for your fish...

Monster Sushi and I go way back. I've introduced him to several of my friends and each of my friends has thanked me for doing so.

The menu is so extensive that the last time I went, my friend almost had a mental breakdown over trying to decide what to order. In any other situation this would be a terrible thing, but take it as a positive aspect of Monster Sushi. You could go back approximately 167 times and not order the same thing twice (I did the math on this one).

When you are seated, your waiter brings your table hot towels to wipe your hands and soothe you into the Monster Sushi experience (or in my friend's case, to help her calm down as she fretted over what to order). Your order comes promptly, and the food is always fresh and cooked (or uncooked in the case of sushi) to perfection.

There are dozens of sushi rolls to chose from, each with a witty, unique name. I always get a roll for an appetizer, and an entrée. My favorite that I've had so far is the chicken teriyaki. The sauce is perfect. I also order a side of fried rice instead of plain rice because I like to mix things up, and it's always great.

Monster Sushi is an integral part of the "night scene" in downtown Summit on weekends. On weeknights, however, it fills up!

There are two other locations in Manhattan, which I am excited to test out! I look forward to introducing Monster Sushi to another friend of mine in the near future!

Underestimated this place.  I used to go to the one in the city then the Summit location when it first opened.  Thought it mediocre.  Came back a couple weeks ago after a few years and thought it was great.  The rolls are large and generous with the fish.  The various spicy rolls I had were extremely good.  I went again today and had another positive experience.  The hostess was very nice.  The servers and owners don't smile.  Must be a monster shtick.

I had a really tasty dinner here last night. The key to enjoying Monster Sushi is to approach it as an all-around Japanese restaurant, not just another sushi place.

I had 3 dishes (none of which were sushi) and the tab came to $40. Not cheap, but I believe the prices reflect the fact that many people in Summit work in Manhattan and are accustomed to it.

The best thing about the restaurant is that there is no music playing. The bane of most restaurants is obnoxious, blaring music that is so loud you can't think. Monster Sushi is quiet so that people can have relaxing conversations.

I had the gyoza (steamed dumplings), grilled shrimp wrapped in bacon, and the grilled salmon mango salad. It was an all-protien, low-fat dinner -- and it was delicious. Service was prompt without being rushed.

They offered several chocolate desserts, but I passed because I was full.

A little bit over priced. It is nice to go with a group of friends and share the rolls which we did. They had a wide vareity of sushi rolls, but i decided to stick to all cooked or tempura. I would go there again if I am in the area to see my friend and if both of us are craving for sushi.

Over-priced and the sushi isn't even that good.  When I try a sushi place for the first time, I have a standard order I use to evaluate how good the place is - California roll and spicy tuna roll.  They are not the most complicated rolls to make by a long shot.  They're standards at every single sushi restaurant I have ever ordered from.  Yet, they are often the best indicators of how good a restaurant really is.

Back to my review.  The California roll, while nice, didn't live up to my expectations.  The avocado wasn't creamy.  The spicy tuna roll had no bite to it.  Unless you count it's uncharacteristic chewiness, which I do not consider to be a compliment.  This, to me, is completely unacceptable.  If you are going to charge such exorbitant prices for something as common as sushi, you better be amazing.  Highly disappointing.

One word: Overpriced (the previous Yelpers hit the nail on the head)
    1. A guest and I each had 2 rolls, a soda (it's BYOB damn it why didn't I realize this prior) and a desserts...for $100...?????
    2. Service is good but not enough to warrant a return trip.
    3. Sushi wasn't even that good. Especially for what you pay...
    4. Sooo many better places within 5 miles of this place.
    5. $100 for sushi and no alcohol included...hello red flag (yes I mentioned it 2x because it's twice as bad).
    Pass this place up...

Ate hear a while ago for lunch. I think I've just exhausted my sushi palette. It's getting older than Britney Spears. My bf and I had some apps- a salad and edamame. The sushi was not the greatest. Too mushy, but I did have avocado in it. It is kind of pricey though which I wasn't too fond of as one of the many college grads in debt!

Great for getting a quick bite to eat.  Went there with a girlfriend who only eats Veggie rolls and she had a great selection to choose from.

horrible, small rolls sucked. Overpriced and they don't stay open past like 7 pm. I mean come on. How are you going to have a restaurant and shut it down at 7?? That's when people eat!

To be honest it's just another overpriced sushi restaurant. And it took 20 mins for someone to take our order.

But the Salad, Tofu Teriyaki, New York Roll and Veggie Roll we had were all so good that I couldn't bring myself to give it 3 stars.

Go here for the salad (that comes free with any teriyaki meal)

Cool posters on the wall should not this place better stars.  Sushi was overpriced, not many basic roll options, server forgot part of order (she only had two tables!) And she gave us the over tables food.  She also described a dish inaccurately and when i asked she fixed it.  However she charged me and after mentioning she removed.  For 90 i much would have rather gone to Arirang and had sushi and hibachi for less than that.

    The Beef Teriyaki was good
    It's just another sushi restaurant.

I've dined here twice, albeit during slow early dinner times (guess the bad reviews are keeping people out?).  I've found the service pretty good and the Sushi excellent.  Eating sushi once a week for many years in Boston & NYC area and found this a much better than average place.  Bit expensive, but some creative rolls (Obama was good) and FRESH fish which is always my #1 criteria (I eat sashimi and nigiri much more than rolls)

Kind of amazed by the bad reviews.  There again, I eat the vegetarian sushi which is very good, along with some of the appetizers.  There's usually a table after a few minutes, friendly service and bright decor.

this should be a 2.5 star, but i rounded down because I am a food rebel and i never give the benefit of the doubt.

the decor is nice, it is fairly clean, service is decent, but in this area it is not great sushi.

the food is decent, if you did not know good sushi, you would think it was pretty good. in reality, there are much better sushi places within 10 minutes of here.

Also, it is kind of expensive for the quality you get. This place just misses on all levels. If it was cheaper, it would have higher rating, or if it had more quality and better prepared sushi.

I guess it's cute?  My lunchmate said, "This is the Disneyland of Sushi".. however, I quite enjoy Disneyland and Disneyland seems ... original?

None of the special rolls caught my attention (however, the prices did), so I opted for an entree.  I picked the Tonkatsu (fried pork) and an order of White Tuna Sashimi.

The sashimi was a let down, I was really excited for the white tuna.. i LOVE white tuna, but this... didn't taste like any white tuna i've had before.  In fact, it tasted.. boring.  Even after I drenched it in soy sauce.

O yea, and since I got an entree.. I had the choice of a soup or salad.  So I chose the salad.  Then when my entree comes out, what's on the side?  A salad of course.  Had I known the damn thing already came with a salad, I would've opted for the soup.

O yea, and there was a hair on one of my pork pieces.  Fried right into the batter.

2 stars for the music and cool posters.

I know this restaurant has its fans, but I must admit that I'm not one of them. I've visited many other Japanese restaurants where the sushi and sashimi were simply more flavorful. Also, I found the pieces of sushi to be oversized--that is, too big to consume easily--something I've not encountered elsewhere. There are better Japanese restaurants in several neighboring towns.

I don't get how Monster Sushi gets so much positive rep! O...K. I get it...that there isn't that many sushi places around in Summit that you can trust (it may be the only one). Monster Sushi is sure a "safe" way to try raw fish for the first time. But compared to many of the sushi places I've been to, this place was nothing spectacular. Just clean and hygenic...am I allowed to call food that? I realize that Monster Sushi caters to a very American crowd. They are very crowd pleasing at best. But here's my recommendation. If you want sushi, go to where the Japanese hang out ( at least try Mitsuwa-Edgewater). If you want good Chinese, go to Chinatown. If you want Korean, go to K-town in Palisade Park. Please don't take this personally , Summit-ers. I've lived in Summit myself for a year and felt the cravings of raw ANYTHING.... and had to subject myself to Monster Sushi at times. Kudos to all of you who went there, for trying something new (whether it be sushi or baseball). But hats off to you, the ones who truly went beyond your comfort zone to see the world a little differently. In sum: Monster sushi is Starbucks of sushi world.

The sushi and other food at Monster are delicious... prices are not shy, especially on the special rolls.  The restaurant is decorated with Godzilla movie posters, which is kind of fun.

The sushi is always served very cold, which I like.
