This is a place with good food and hit-or-miss customer service. Â I called in an order over the phone and asked for two items listed on the menu. Â I heard the lady yell to the back to ask whether they had it available. Â I would think that curry shrimp would be available anytime the place is open...but...okay. Â I asked for my side order to be rice, and plantains (which I love). Â Well, I came to pick up my order and the cashier hurriedly gave me my items. Â I can take partial fault in not checking but they forgot my plantains. Â I bring this up because it's not the first time they have forgotten something in my order, and it's usually plantains. Â If they're not available most of the time, I think they should be excluded from the menu. Â I was still charged full price for something I didn't get, and by the time I realized this, I was busy at a function I had to attend in the evening. Â If it wasn't for that, I'd go back and at least get a partial refund. Â The quality of the food is usually good, but customer service is lacking. Â The lady who took my order on the phone completed the order by hanging up on me before I could ask how long it would be for pickup. Â I don't like that at all! Â The atmosphere in the restaurant is nice and comfortable, and they get points for decor. The unavailability of some staple items frustrates me. Â I haven't tried their buffet but I heard it's good...Overall i'd like to give it five stars but I think it's only worth of two, in my opinion.
Review Source:DISCLAIMER: After reading the other review, I went out on a limb and tried the buffet. Â I have co-workers who claim the take-out is A-MAZ-ING.
Yeah. I went in around 2p. I don't eat meat, so can't comment on the chicken, but was seriously disappointed. The rice-and-peas - staple of any worthwhile Caribbean restaurant - DRY! The peas were shriveled and the rice was hard. Plaintains were mushy and so-so. Salad bar was better than, say, Wendy's. Seems like there was a nice cucumber salad. The fish was overcooked. The coconut muffin was fresh, but not supermoist. All-in-all, I could've done better with a frozen meal, which is a shame. Â Not saying I won't try it again, but it's hard for me to believe that anyone who's ever had Jamaican food tasted what I tasted and thought it was good.
People were nice, though.
Somewhat of a hole in the wall place in a shopping center, but I was crazy impressed. Â I ordered jerk chicken (duh), green beans, mac and cheese, and collard greens. Â Jerk chicken was good.. my boyfriend ordered ox tail... so getting the ox tail next time. Â Im a sucker for soul food-eque collard greens.. and those were pretty good, but the green beans were way better. Â The collard greens were a little too sweet for me. Â The mac and cheese tasted like it came from the box, but you can't really go wrong with mac and cheese. Â It's good whether its box style or home made. Â I couldn't understand anything the lady behind the counter was saying when she was taking our order, but overall the experience was good and the food was great. Â Definitely will be going again.
Review Source:Every time I'm down here, I go here (I'm down here a lot). I really haven't had a food from the buffet or menu I haven't liked, and the atmosphere is pretty chill. The Jamaican foods and the soul foods are both stellar. I wish I could eat there every day without becoming a round mound! In my opinion, one of the best restaurants in the area! Don't forget a coconut muffin!
Review Source:I was talking to a friend at work about jerk. Â "Too many restaurants," I complained, "seem to think sugar and soy sauce are part of jerk seasoning." Â My friend, who's said his favorite food is jerk chicken, told me "Try the Caribbean place on Virginia Beach Boulevard by Military Circle. Â I forget its name, but it's the best I've had in Hampton Roads."
Well, I took my friend's advice, and I drove on down and lo and behold: MP Island, in a little strip mall with an Office Depot and Ollie's Bargain World and stuff. Â I went in, and found there's a lunch and dinner buffet mixing Caribbean food and soul food. Â There's also an attached little grocery store and a bar. Â But, I was there for jerk chicken, so I got the dinner buffet.
My friend was right: the jerk chicken is delicious. Â The flavors were right: allspice and scotch bonnet. Â The meat was juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Â This jerk was spicy. Â I loved it.
What I didn't realize was that I'd be able to have other tasty food. Â I didn't go into the soul food so much (or the inexplicable chicken lo mein) although they've got a very tasty mac & cheese, instead sticking to the Caribbean food. Â They had curry goat: soft goat meat falling off the bone in a delicious sauce. Â Curry chicken also available, also delicious - though that had potatoes mixed in. Â There were also coconut "muffins" that I swear were more like coconut cupcakes - plus a very sweet cornbread. Â Yummy!
Several TVs were scattered throughout the dining area. Â ESPN was showing on several, but on the others? Â Cricket, which I guess must be popular in the Caribbean. Â Bob Marley-like music played in the background.
It isn't fancy, but it's delicious and has several nice trappings of authenticity.
