While Mr. Dan's is lacking in atmosphere, it only takes one bite to understand why they're still standing after so many years. Â I was introduced in 1995, after moving to room with a friend in Speedway, IN from FL. Â It was always our remedy after a night of drinking & dancing in Broad Ripple and within driving distance of our job. Â
Over the holiday break I stopped by the new location on 25th/Keystone and picked up lunch for my home bodies; several Big Dan's meals w/ everything, an order of wings, a plain cheeseburger and a smoothie. Â We opted to mix it up and try the regular AND home fries. Â Â
My burger was as yummy as I'd remembered, so greasy good! Â It left me craving another, and had the snow not been falling hard, I might have driven back. Â My 7 yr old's cheeseburger was cut in half because it was so big, but she came back for the rest, so no 'left overs' for me! Â The fries were hot and crispy and gone in a flash too.I didn't try the wings, but should add that they don't come with celery/blue cheese like most places - in case that's a deal breaker for you.
They've added 'treats' to their menu like funnel cakes, ice cream, cotton candy and the like, but were out of all but smoothies when we were there, thank goodness!
For years I drove by different locations in town and never paid much attention to Mr. Dan's, just seemed like a hole in the wall. Â And now after stopping by there and having a Double Dan w/cheese and home fries, I discovered what I had been missing out on all this time. Â Will definitely frequent this establishment again that could have the backdrop in the movie Argo.
Review Source:Finally had some Mr. Dan's. Â Yeah, the burger is pretty good, and so are the fries. Â The guy cooking the burgers was right on top of things, which is much more than I can say for the guy working the register. Â With his confusion and mistakes with orders, stuff backed up pretty quickly. Â They do charge an extra 40 cents for a little bit of cheese, and a quarter for lettuce and a quarter for tomato, which seems like nickel and diming the customer. Â Certainly better than fast food, but they really need to spiff the place up -- there's really no reason for it to look as run-down as it does. Â (The outside is worse than the inside.) Â Maybe that's part of its "charm."
Review Source:Going to this place last night brought back that childhood nostalgia! I remember when I was a kid, my goal was to be able to eat the whole Mr Dan burger, but I never could! I ordered the Mr Dan w/cheese come with a fruit punch & lemonade mixed! It seems like over the years the single burger has gotten thinner. The bread is thicker than the actually pattie, however the taste is still the same, as I once remembered! Their home fries are awesome, but beware becuz the lemonade & punch mix will send a diabetic into a sugar coma seriously! It is super sweet! I know that the next time that I eat here again, I will have to get a double Dan w/cheese instead!
Review Source:Oh, Mr. Dan's.
I'll admit, I've never been here for lunch, but it is on the way to and from work, so I occasionally stop by for breakfast.
The Big Hoss is the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had.
$2.99 gets you two sausage patties, eggs, and cheese on a hamburger bun, cooked hot and fresh. It is amazing.
The only issue is it takes a bit to cook since it's all fresh. But, if you've got a few minutes, stop by. It's worth it.
Oh yeah, and don't mind the plexiglass.
This is basically a locally-owned fast food joint. Â I had the Double Dan w/cheese and all the fixins. Â The bun was a little too flaccid to support the yummy stuff inside, but it didn't matter much. They also have wings, hot dogs, tenderloins, and other healthy treats. Â It's the perfect place to go while your car's getting fixed at Ralph's muffler shop (another quality establishment) across the street. Oh, and the staff couldn't be more friendly.
Review Source:Got the Big Dan w/ cheese and order of fries.
Big Dan was a good burger, but the bun overpowered the burger a bit. Might split a Double Dan with my wife next time to remedy that, but I also want to try their tenderloin.
Fries were pretty dang solid: a bit on the greasy side, but hey, you're at Mr. Dan's Hamburgers--awesome seasoning. Got a couple of home fries in my bag, and decided I wanted to try those next time. Think I might like them better.
It's definitely fast food, so it sat on me heavy, but didn't feel like someone poured cement in my belly an hour later like most fast food burger joints.
Heard on NPR they just scored financing to set up a few more locations around Indy. I'd be interested in seeing some other stores. Ambiance doesn't make or break a good burger for me, but I know plenty of people who aren't so keen on ordering through Plexi-glass.
