I visited Mr. G's for the first time right after I moved into Logan Square a few months ago, and I've quickly developed a soft spot for this place as my source for all Chicago junk food staples. Â My personal favorites include the chicken pita, gyro, and the hot dog, but you can also get burgers, pizza, and Italian beef as well. Â The combos include fries and a drink, and are a pretty good deal (on average around $5.95). Â They come with plenty of food, and you will think at first that there are more fries than you can eat...but you'll end up eating them all anyway. Â The one negative comment I have on this place is that you might end up waiting a little while for your food, but trust me - it's worth the wait. Â Plus, if the owner feels that you've waited too long, he won't hesitate to throw in a free food item like fries or a drink. Â I've also noticed that he appreciates his regulars, and goes the extra mile to make sure they're happy. Â This place definitely gets a thumbs-up from me.
Review Source:Great prices, friendly service & a menu with something for everyone. I'd much rather come here any day than the McDonald's across the street. Not only because it's better quality, but it also supports a mom n pop business. This neighborhood needed a nice little hot dog place & Mr G's more than fills that void!
So, you get a better value, better food & feel better by supporting Mr G's.
OK I've been back 2 times since my last review. The ordering process has seemed to gotten better, the last 2 times they were able to do the simple task of taking my order and telling the guys in back what to make and of course getting it in a timely fashion. Thank God  the problem with them adding up the bill seems to have been fixed as well. No more of this adding up 3 items and having various prices ring up, 34.96, no wait, 1.24, no wait 15.99 no wait!  They seem to have gotten a cash register made within in the last 15 years similar to McDonald's where  you just push a button for the menu item.  Good job Mr. G! I am once again happy you're around. Good food, good prices, and not so painful to watch you do your jobs.
Review Source:Went a few times not long after they opened. Â
Had an ok beef and mediocre fries.
Stopped going.
Went today.
Had an excellent beef, and terrific fries.
Honestly, these fries I just finished eating kicked the shit out of McD's next door.
Good fries are a rare and beautiful thing.
Bad fries are a bummer.
When a restaurant takes their bad fries and works on them and makes them into good fries, it's like, the highest achievement of restaurantouring.
It is nature's Michelin Star.
Bravo, Mr. G's!
Keep up the good work!
They werent money hungry. I wanted to buy melted cheese for my fries ($.50) with a five dollar bill and the guy just gave it to me. Burger was decent it had shredded lettuce which I'm not a big fan. The fries were fresh cut and a nice dark color. Reminds me of jimmies fries for those from the west side who know what i mean. It was s good experience and ill be back again soon.
Review Source:We have been there a few times for take out and while the food was pretty good, you could tell the people running the place didn't know what they were doing very well. This time we decided to place an order for delivery. First, the gentleman taking my order couldn't get it right to save his life. Repeated my phone number, address, credit card number wrong over and over again. After not getting my credit card right three times I finally decided to just pay cash. He said okay it will be there within a half hr. Being we live about 7 minutes away, I thought this was fair. An hour later we finally call to see where our food was and the gentleman on the phone (did I mention this is one of the OWNERS?!!) was so confused and had no clue we never got our food. As he explains they use a delivery service and he doesn't know where the driver was, the driver shows up and proceeds to argue with us that the food is in fact still hot when you could clearly see the cheese hard on the fries, the bun soggy, etc. We tell the owner that we are not going to take this food. At this point the driver is still trying to defend himself and blame the fact that he had another delivery on Augusta which is waaay far in the other direction and that he had decided to take that one first. I normally would never call and complain seeing has how I am a restaurant manager myself, but I was so upset by the driver arguing with me at my front door, waiting an hr for food we couldn't eat and I still had to cook. I called basically just to let the owner know what kind of drivers he has representing them and he seemed genuinely apologetic said next time we order it would be on him, blah blah blah. So, a few days later we decided to try once again and place a call for delivery, and the same gentleman from the previous evening answered the phone pretended to not know anything about, basically forced my husband to pick up the food in the rain rather than have to pay someone to deliver a free order. Whatever, when my husband gets there, the owner decides to give my husband an attitude, pretty much making him feel like he was making the whole thing up. When my husband gets the order, he turns to the owner and says thank you for everything. This DOUCHE BAG totally ignores my husband and walks away. The guys dont know how to run a business but it is a good location, so they could possibly make it. However, the terrible customer service is going to drive that business right into the ground.
Review Source:I find myself rationing trips to Mr G's- it's just not healthy for a man eat an Italian Beef w/giadinieria and the amazing homemade french fries as often as I'd like.
The combo in question comes out to an easy $7 (including a drink) and the guys behind the counter are always friendly and helpful.
I'm docking them an imaginary star for not being open late enough- 2am is prime Mr G's time, if only they were open!
Early for an event in Logan Square, I decided to grab some supper. Â Stopped at Mr G's Beef and I'm glad I did. Â Had the Gyros plate. Â It was great and reasonably priced.
Friendly people behind the counter. Â Ample sized and very clean sit down area including window facing - watch the world go by - seating. Â Watched some Olympic news on the screen. Â Couldn't ask for more.
If ever my travels take me back to Logan Square, I know where I'm headed when hunger hits.
Great specials, superbly cheap and pretty quick turnaround times.
The Chicago dog is the best value on the menu and is my standard order here. Bonus: It's cheaper than at Daddy Cool's down the road. Closer to my apartment too!
The cheese fries, oh my! They don't skimp on the cheese. So good.
Pizza looks greasy as hell and really good. They seem to run out of the sausage slices pretty quickly though so I haven't been able to get a slice yet..
I wish this joint the best of luck; hopefully it'll last longer than its two predecessors.
Overall, pleasantly surprised at the quality for the price and at their consistency of product.
My phone was run over by a car yesterday so I hopped on the bus to the T-Mobile store. The phone is in critical condition but this review is not about T-Mobile.
I am a woman about my food. Feelings get hurt when mama is hungry. Life stresses I can handle just fine, but a phone in critical condition and a grumbling stomach led me to walk from the store in route to McDonalds. But oh did I stop just before crossing the street at Mr. G's Beef.
For reals, thee. best. hour. I have spent at an eatery in a long time. As others have stated, but definitely needs to be stated again, the level of customer service was phenomenal! Dave (?) is easy on the eyes and very pleasant. My ladies will agree with me on this.
After deliberating (yea, it's that serious) with another customer (a regular) over what he'd tried and found to be tasty, I settled on a Gyro meal. If I am not mistaken, I paid under 8 bucks and proceeded to find my seat at the counter adjacent to the window.
I mourned my phone about 5-7 minutes then my order was ready.
Holy-hell! When I say I am picky about my Gyro-sauce, I mean it. It has to be good and it has to be HOMEMADE, which btw, I was told that everything on the menu, with the exception of a few frozen appetizers, are just that. The Gyro-sauce was perfect and complete with fresh cuts of cucumber and perfectly complimented the sandwich. I have found that it takes skill to build a perfect Gyro. Mr. G seems to know the formula.
The Kronos, I was told, is cut from the highest grade (there are 3) that money can buy. The pita bread was just crisp enough and there was just enough meat. It really is that simple folks. And with that I was sold. Add tomatoes, fresh onion, fresh-cut fries (w cheese-sauce) and a raspberry iced-tea and you're in business and well on your way to Yelp-super-stardom.
A woman of my word, I'd asked if they were on Yelp and here you have just read the beginnings of a wonderfully romantic love affair after a very bad break-up.
RIP to my phone.
I stopped in here to try the pizza by the slice, and was very pleasantly surprised. Â I lucked into getting a pizza fresh out of the oven, free of heat lamp aging, and was pleased. Â The slice was mini-New York style; loaded with cheese, with fresh Italian sausage flaked with fennel, and it was greasy as hell. Â Some days you need a greasy slice of pizza to soak up the prior evening's activities; if you find yourself in such a dilemma, Mr. G's is the place.
Plus, at $3 for a slice and a soda, the price cannot be beat. Â Service is friendly, to boot. Â A neighborhood cannot have too many shops for slices, and so Mr. G's is a welcome addition to the Square. Â
Some say the Italian Beef is worthwhile as well, I'll have to get back to you on that.
Beef - hot, dipped, mozz
I love taquerias as much as any Logan Square junk-foodie, but am glad to see traditional Chicago food arrive. Â Mr. G's is my new favorite italian beef - I rate them over Al's. Â
When they first opened up, I agree with the other reviews - it was hectic and not so good.  But now they're in a groove - they've gotten their craft down, and  are serving the best beef in Logan Square.
Pretty impressed with this place.
The guy working the register when I went (I assumed this was Mr. G) was pleasant and very attentive. Â He seemed really stoked on my order, and justifiably so. Â I got a beef with giardiniera and an order of fries and both tasted as homemade as he claimed; the beef well seasoned and juicy and the fries extra crispy. Â Definitely better quality than what you find at most beef 'n' dawg spots. The space is also spotless.
I'm glad Mr. G made it to the neighborhood, and I'll be back for sure!
Hey Mr. G,
I like you. Your staff is very friendly and really ChicAHgo.
Your french fries are fresh and perfectly salty.
I liked the Gyro and also tried the 'Mozz Beef' as you call it, pretty good, but the bread was a little soggy by the time I got it home. But can I really expect anything but on a MOZZ BEEF?
Also, when my dining partner suggested visiting you this evening, I totally made up a catchy jingle for Mr. G's on the spot.
Let me know if you'd like me to pitch it to you for your future radio commercials.
It's impossible not to be charmed by the frenetic energy of the trio of cooks/cashiers here, each of whom carries that earnest and pleasantly unkempt demeanor that in different circumstances might have landed them jobs performing with the Canadian prog rock trio Rush. I thought my fast food days were long over, but the handwritten list of "specials" (in quotes!) had some reasonably healthy options, including chicken parm.
I waited amidst a Shakespearean comedy of errors better summed up by Ian J.'s dialogue sample below; the cash register kept pulling up seemingly random totals for my order ($2.43- "no, that can't be right," $31.22- "no, that's not right")- at one point interrupted by the cashier procuring pen and paper to do the math himself (+1!), before going back to the cash register for several more attempts to "officially" charge $6.53 for a chicken parm and a tamale. In the backdrop, an inaudible television seemed to be playing a commercial advertisement glorifying extramarital affairs, and behind that a Laurel-and-Hardy-esque comedy was playing out in the form of two fellows trying to climb parallel ladders in lockstep while lifting the new 30-foot-long awning into place. Â I think they're working out some kinks in the system yet, all the while innovating in verbal fast food shorthand ("get me a dog and a large dew!") the cashier pleasantly ordered to his crew.
To give this spot a fair chance, I sprinted home to eat my takeout while it was still warm. The tamale was shrink wrapped, passable only by the standards of microwaved gas station food. Â The chicken parm, on the other hand, was at least as good as college dining hall food, and was gently crisped to a cinder at the edges. Fully satisfying. On the way out, I had to step around the awning, which was now battered and lying on the ground next to the two defeated maintenance workers. But I have faith in these cats- they'll get it right through sheer persistence and positivity.
I'll make it short and sweet. Â I'm from Chicago and this is your classic chicago Hot Dog place. Â They have fresh cut fries that are really good and you can usually tell how good a place is by their fries. Â It's not mind blowing or pushing any boundaries but it's clean, classic Kronos and Vienna type restaurant, and really nice staff.
Review Source:This is a good new place in Logan Square, filling a well-needed niche of independent fast food options outside of tacos and burritos. Being from the suburbs , I've sampled a good amount of the hot dog and beef fast food joints that litter the area. Mr G's is great in price, simplicity of the menu and portion size.
I ordered a polish sausage with fries and found the 'chicago style' toppings to be great with some not-too-greasy fries (very hard to find) served along with them. The sausage was a little too firm and dry to be ideal, but I found the service to be friendly and fast for made-to-order food. I expect a lot of the areas to get better with time and I'll definitely be going back on a late night for a cheap burger, hot dog or beef.
Alright, no. I really wanted to like this place.
In what used to be the old El Pollo Loco, I was excited about a beef stand opening up so close to my apartment. Logan needed one seeing as the best burger option is at D&L up on Belmont and Kimball, which can sometimes be a bit of a hike when you're hammered. None the less, I was genuinely thrilled to see they were slated to open.
Oy.
I went in and ordered a beef, dipped, with fries and a coke. I was the only customer in there, yet they had a grill man, a dude on the condiment/beef/hot dog station, a guy on the fry station, and the cashier working as an expo, all yelling and hustling about as if they were on Top Chef.
"YOU HAVE MY FRY GOING?! ONE FRY ALL DAY, NEED IT WITH THAT BEEF!"
"GOT YOUR FRY COMIN' IN TWO MINUTES. FRY ALMOST UP."
"...WHERE IS MY FRY!? I GOT THE BEEF I NEED THAT FRY!"
"FRY COMIN' UP IN ONE MINUTE."
All while running around like mad, with extra hustle on one order. It appeared to be four guys in the weeds over one ticket of three items that should be slap and done. Now, I work in kitchens. I've worked the line with high volume in fine dining in New York City and Chicago. That shouldn't be happening. It seriously took ten minutes for my order. I chalked it up to opening jitters or working out the kinks. Sadly, that dog and pony show was for naught because the food was relatively terrible. The beef was incredibly dry and tasted like Scalia's out of a bag, and the fries, which were obviously the achilles heel on the line, tasted as if they were just par-fried at 275 and not re-fried. Totally floppy, greased sogged fries. Very underwhelmed.
Now, I gave it another chance. This time, the burger and fries. I walked in and it seemed they calmed down the Hell's Kitchen antics and it was smooth sailing with a few customers ahead of me. Got my burger and fries, and the same thing. The beef was brutally dry and over cooked. Like hockey puck bad. I'm not sure if they are par-grilling their burgers and letting them sit for longer than they should, but there was absolutely no moisture. The fries were a little better than before, but still, crank up the fryer.
I'm holding out hope that they will eventually get into some kind of groove, but in a city full of beef stands, you'll sink fast if there is nothing that separates you from the rest.

1/19/12 Update: Okay, seriously, I just walked by and one of the dudes was wearing a chef's coat, cross armed, watching the TV with the Chef de Frites.
Take it down a notch, guys.
Mr. G is What the area needed You first walk into: A bright well lit , n very Colorful Hot Dog n Fries stand. I have visited Mr. G's twice in the past week. The Vienna Hot Dog picture on the wall says it all. You're in for a real treat.  First , let me start by saying the prices are out of this world!!!  I Really thought there was a hidden camera filming me. Where do you buy a hot dog for $2.00 ?  Not even the hot dog cart in Home Depot is that cheap, but most importantly it's not a's Good. The fries are Fresh Cut . The owners Dave and Maurizio  ask for your opinion of their Hot Dog and Fries and genuinely care. Â
The second visit , I saw a couple of city workers eating Italian Beefs well you guessed it I had to have one. Probably one of "The Best Italian Beefs" in  the city. The  french bread ( very Important ) caresses the juicy and very "Tasty" beef slices, But the best thing is you won't leave wishing you ordered more.  Great job Guys !! and Please don't wake me Up if I'm Dreaming !!
As a resident of Logan Square, I've always been wanting for a place to conveniently get some good old fashioned greasy fast food. Until now, my only real option has been trekking it out to Niko's on Elston, or succumbing to going to the McDonald's on Milwaukee, which is pretty notoriously subpar. So, when my roommate told me of a place just across the street from that McDonald's, I had to try it out. In one week, I've tried their hot dog, Italian beef and quarter pound burger, and I can say without a doubt that this is one of the best places in the area to go for food of this kind. Their Italian beef was juicy with multiple types of peppers on top, their hot dog was as Chicago as it gets, and their burgers were grilled to perfection with notably fresh ingredients on top, not to mention their fries, which are deliciously salty.
If that wasn't good enough, the prices here are incredible. You can get a Chicago hot dog with fries for just $2.50. That's less than some downtown dog carts charge for just the dog. The restaurant is very clean as well, with nice decor and a plasma screen TV. It isn't open 24 hours, but on Fridays and Saturday's it's open until midnight, which is the next best thing. It's also conveniently located really close to the Logan Theatre. Once that reopens, Mr. G's Beef will make for a great next-stop for people getting out of a movie, I'm sure.
Bottom line: Try this place out. They're still getting their bearings, so the process isn't quite as quick as it will be eventually (though considering I've had to wait for 20 minutes for food at the McDonald's next door and that place has been open for God knows how long), but the wait is well worth the quality and value. Highly, highly recommended.
