Having never tried kava, I heard about it and went in with my friend. We ordered a bowl (5 servings) and split it. Ewww. We didn't feel any of the effects so we ordered a strawberry honey flavored kava, and that was surprisingly good. Although I still didn't feel it when I left, apparently it takes a while to feel the effects. Either way, the place was very relaxed and I loooved the décor. The prices, although a little steep for me, were my only real qualm. Overall, it was a fun experience. The woman bar-tender was very friendly and the male was... a character. :) Anyways, they had some really cool live music and I would love to come back just for the ambience.

I had an amazing first experience here last night. It's like entering a tropical lounge, with terrific lighting, art, Buddhas and murals, and a beautiful tree anchoring the middle. The band playing that night was a phenomenal trance-like sound creator Seven D. Kava, does not taste good. However, you should drink it like a shot (not tea) and then enjoy as it relaxes you and eases you into an all-is-good vibe.

After passing this place many  times, it  finally peaked my interest and I decided to check it out one night. After I entered  this place, I  looked around and felt like I was in Yoda's lair in the Dagobah  system. The interior of this place is kind of like  a cross between hippy heaven and a weed smokers paradise lodged in Rivendell. After I regained mental composure from my senses being bombarded by the interior design, I noticed there was no music playing or entertainment. The dude behind the counter did inform me they usually have live bands or performances or music playing. But there was some entertainment, there was a  small group of weirdo's having an odd  very  loud conversation.

So I  chose a seat at the "bar" and I asked if they honor "Yelp" check in specials, and the dude said "No". I was like Ok.. interesting. So i guess this dude did not know about the Yelp Check-in specials they listed, or they are using Yelp check-in specials to lure people to their business.Instead of walking out I decided to order one  of those Kava drink things, by the way it is the only thing they sell  to drink. After asking for "one shell" (the lingua used to order a shot of kava) the dude pulled out a Zephyrhills plastic bottle from under the counter filled with some kind of sandy brown liquid, and poured about 3 table spoons into a halved coconut shell and handed it to me. I was kind of turned off about how they maintain and serve this drink, I mean at least have a dispensing machine or have it in a  more appropriate container on  a counter or something.

The kava tasted like chalky forest dirt, on my tongue it felt like liquid sand. It took me  about 30 minutes to drink all of it. It was hard drinking this stuff, it was  like drinking medicine my parents forced on me when I was a kid.

While I was forcing myself to drink this hellish yet expensive drink I could not help but over hear the odd loud conversation of the weirdo's beside me. There was a skinny hippyish  loud annoying  girl who said that right after she drank a shot of kava, "she felt her "Third -eye" had opened".

OK so I am confused here, Daoist monks go to Maoshan mountain, to practice inner meditation for years living off of water, vegetables and fruit while practicing arcane inner and outer martial arts.  Using their minds to transform Qi into higher vibrating forms of energy, which then finally reveals the splendor of the Golden Flower to them. There by transforming them from  mortal into an immortal being. But this loud  profanity laced annoying fruit cake skinny hippy just drank a shot of some dirt tasting rubbish and her "Third-eye" just opened.......C'mon man... for crying out loud.... give me a god damned break man.

The one thing I did enjoy at this place outside of its creative interior is that they have many  excellent proverbial books and other books dispensing arcane knowledge you can read, while you are there.

Went for the open mic night on last tuesday of the month.  Experience was great.  Kava is very interesting.  People were wonderful.  My experience with kava was similar to what I have just read.   The bar tender explained kava and gave me the free shot for performing. I had three more during the open mic as was recommended.  I look forward to going back and experiencing kava to it's fullest potential for me.

If you do not like being drunk and are averse to weed, this is the place to be.  The kava does not taste very good but the bartenders are very knowledgeable and friendly.  Hard to believe since they must have the same conversation explaining what kava is to half of the people that walk in.

I drank four shells and did feel a little mellow.  Not sure what to compare it to; maybe similar to the feeling you get after spending thirty minutes in a sauna.  Its unique but probably not my cup of tea... or should I say kava.

Who likes beer the first time they drink it? NOBODY!

    Kinda like Kava.

As many others have said, this place is so chill and laid back. My girlfriend and I went here after dinner. We loved the ambiance. There was a copy of Kama Sutra on the bar. Not illustrated, to my dismay.

The bartender was helpful and informative about kava. He told us that kava is a tree found in the South Pacific (hawaii, vanuatu, fiji). The root is dried, ground up and combined with water. The natives meet in the afternoon for "Kava Time" -- kinda like the South Pacific version of Americans' "Beer Time" -- to talk about the events of the day and make merry with your pals. Cool story, bro. Tell it again. :-)

Anyway, we had two Turtles of kava: One Chai flavored and the other one straight up. The Chai version tasted like Chai. The straight up version tasted like dirt. I definitely felt relaxed afterwards, but not so much that I could be accused of a DUI.

Go here to broaden your horizons and to take in the cool atmosphere. We thought it was so cool we bought some kava tea from Amazon to make it at home.

The only downside is the price. Tell the bartender you're scared you won't like it. Ask for a sample of the regular kava. If you can stand the taste of the straight stuff, you'll save yourself about 25%.

Ambiance and place was very cool.
    The drink itself?  Pure B.S.
We ordered the "turtle shell" which was more than enough for four people for water that tasted like volcano ash with a chewed up pencil after taste. Thank God for the pineapple chunks we were given to eat after drinking

One of the coolest spots I have been to in a long time. It's a stoner paradise. I am not a stoner but could still enjoy the atmosphere. The Kava is a gimmick imo. Still, if you like trippy spaced out dark rooms filled with puzzles and games and other weirdo's then you will love Kava bar.

I go here all the time! Love it! Kava is definitely an acquired taste, but the benefits of kava are worthwhile! I highly recommend this place to anyone! Best place to relax in South Florida besides the beach! :)

Mystic water kava bar is a relaxing place, has a great atmosphere, Nd everyone I have meet in the kava bar is enjoyable including the staff, the kava it self is a acquired test but has so many good effects.  Kava bar is a place I highly recommend to friends and family and anyone who never has been

Cool place, very chill, friendly staff, but the kava is horrible tasting (like dirt) and is overpriced.  Maybe if you drank a gallon of it you might get some sort of effect, but all I got was a tiny bit of numbness at the back of my throat.   Kava is definitely not worth the money, but the atmosphere is great.  I wish they sold beer, I'd spend a lot of time here.

    Time for a review update!
I have come back here two more times since my last visit.
Awesome hidden bar that looks more like a rain forest than a Hollywood establishment. If this is your first time drinking kava I highly recommend you try a flavored one, unless you like drinking dirt water. On my 3rd visit back to mystic water I really felt the effects of kava and definitely felt "different". If you want a good nights sleep I highly recommend a trip here. Besides all this, the service is pretty good and the games they have to play are pretty awesome. It can get expensive which is the only downside, my group spend 90$ for 5 people.
If you're up a new experience or you're into hippy things you need to check out Mystic Water

Ok now this was my first time ever drinking Kava. My buddy had been to this place before and liked it a lot so me him and another buddy went on a friday night. When you walk in in its really dark with very dim ambient lighting. The whole cafe was themed like a rainforest with trees and vines. Now the staff will explain what Kava is where it came from what its used for and all its properties it posesses. They sereve the Kava in a wood bowl that looks like a sea turtle and you drink it out of a coconut shell. Now the taste of Kava is really bitter and not pleasant at all so for this they give you pineapple chucks to help kill the taste. The cafe in general is really chill and everyone has a good time and hangs out. I would def go back.

This place is so cool! Assuming one comes in with the right mindset, of course. Looking for a raucous party spot? Look elsewhere, because this isn't it. This is a place to chill out and indulge your inner hippie. I'd always wanted to try this place, and recently, it finally happened.

No alcohol is served, so I'd advise getting comfortable with the idea of drinking kava. A form of tea made from the kava plant, the taste is rather bitter and earthy, but seeing as I love that taste sensation, it's right up my alley. It's very bitter and somewhat tongue-numbing, but I'd say that if one can handle the hop bitterness of a good Double IPA, this should be no problem.

What of the "effects" of kava? I'd heard a lot about this plant. On one extreme I've heard it said that it's a powerful psychoactive plant, on the other extreme it supposedly does absolutely nothing. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in between, as I felt an odd mental state set in while consuming almost the whole large bowl. I found it somewhat different than being drunk - it brings on sedation, but at the same time, clarity. I didn't find that it made me overwhelmingly tired. There was also almost a sense of time "slowing down," with the sitar hippie-music that was playing seeping into my brain at a different level than would normally be experienced.

This is definitely the kind of place that's good for merely talking, or playing a card game of some sort. I'm not quite sure how this place fits in the context of a normal "night out," but I did enjoy it very much, and can't wait to find an excuse to go back.

One cold night my girlfiend and I were bored and had absolutely no idea what to do, so we thought it would be fun to grab some Menchie's, head down to Downtown Hollywood and find a place to hang out. As soon as I walked by this bar I did a double take. My girlfriend said she had been wanting to try this place out, so we rounded up a few friends the next night and stepped inside to what felt like another world. The entire place is decorated like a magical forest and there is a gigantic tree by the bar. The bar smells like incents, and there is relaxing music playing. They even have a live band ( but not when we were there).
The curly haired "barteneder" I guess you would say was super friendly and educated us on their special and only drink: Kava, which is supposed to relax you.
The boys ordered a bowl of Kava, which is normally $21, but because they got the "better tasting one" it was $30. I took a shot of it from their lovely little coconut cups. At first it tasted like chocolate to me, but the after taste wasn't so pleasant. And yes, it looks like dirty water. This is a very chill place to sit around and chat, relax, and even play board and card games if you'd like. This is definitely different than any bar I have ever been to and a cool experience.

When entering Mystic Water, you always receive a warm welcome from the friendly staff. The foresty look and the changing mood lights help make this place even more enchanting. To have this exotic drink is always a treat that will always brighten your day. It's a little piece of heaven in Downtown Hollywood. Love this place!

The perfect alternative to a hookah bar. This place is as mellow and chill as it gets. The inside looks like a lit atrium. Its very cool. The only thing that is served here is kava. No food, no beer, just kava. For those that may not be familiar with kava, very relaxing drink (although it tastes a bit...earthy).

For those of you who are familiar with kava, in my experience, it has medium-high potency, so you are getting your moneys worth!

I would go back again, its just very cool.

This place is definitely interesting. After hearing nothing but great things a group of 4 of us drove up to try Kava out and my experience with it is - it was just okay. We ordered the bowl with coconut flavor Kava which was accompanied by slices of pineapple. Didn't feel any different. The waiter was rude. It was pricey. Probably wont be going back.

Absolutely wonderful. I have been to Nakava in Boca a few times a couple years ago and it doesn't hold a candle to this place. It is like walking into fern gully, twinkling lights, and a mellow mood-- a welcome shift from the hustle and bar-ridden environment of the rest of Hollywood blvd. There is fauna and tree trunks sprouting out of the bar, and ambient music humming in the background.
To someone who has never been before It can be a little intimidating as everyone there seems like a regular, but the "bartender" is a sweet dude, and explains everything without any form of hubris if you express your ignorance about Kava. My best friend and I tried a "shot" out of a single shell, and then ended up ordering a "bowl" which is about five shots. The Kava itself, to say its an acquired taste is an understatement, it taste exactly like earth, you either love it, or you have to drink it like a shot. I actually enjoyed the taste, and I was complacent sipping on it, but the bartender provides you with fresh pineapple chasers in case it doesn't suit your palette. After five coconut shells, I was mellow and giggly, a temperament completely foreign to an anxiety-ridden University of Florida student, and when I got home, I slept like a corpse.
I know other reviews have noted the price, but in juxtaposition to a typical "bar" setting, it is not uncommon to spend 4-5$ per drink, and one "bowl" is 5 shells at 20$ the price is comparable.  Not to mention, KavaKava seems exponentially better for your body than Alcohol. I will definitely be back, if not tonight.  Worth checking out.

My bestie was visiting from out of town, and we decided to go to Downtown Hollywood for some chill people watching.  We scoped out the directory, and Mystic Water Kava Bar jumped off the list... we made it a point to go, and I'm so glad we did.  It was so completely different from anything else I've ever tried.

From the outside, we were a bit intimidated to go in... peering through the windows, the place looked like a Rainforest Cafe (and we all know how awful those are...), and all of the patrons looked like regulars.  Curiosity got the better of us, and we ventured inside.  We walked up to the bar, where a friendly face greeted us.  We confessed our ignorance of kava, and he was more than willing to give us a tutorial.

He warned us that plain kava is an "acquired taste", and recommended the kava and coconut juice... I am NOT a fan of coconut, but I followed his recommendation, and I'm glad I did... the kava was served in a half coconut, and looked like dirty dish water.  It tasted better than it looked, but not something I'd like to drink all the time.

There was something about the fake trees, the music, the kava... I caught a bit of a buzz.  We checked the wikipedia, and learned kava is legit - which was surprising, and awesome.  I've never been to a place like Mystic Water, and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to try something new.  There's even a BOGO coupon for checking in on Yelp, so what do you have to lose??

Went here last night with a friend, who introduced me to the world of strong kava. It's definitely a relaxing beverage, and the inside is aimed at enhancing that relaxed feeling: dimly lit, very "earthy" decor (including big sculpture trees and pipe cleaner butterflies), and the nicest "bartenders" ever. After splitting two huge bowls of kava, I was feeling its effects intensely and we spent probably two or three hours chatting while I marveled at the visual textures on everything. You definitely have to take this stuff in shots, as it tastes like bitter-spicy water-mud with grit in the bottom, but the tingling effect on your mouth and tongue are pleasant. The pineapple makes up for any bitter aftertaste, and with the company of good conversationalists, this can make for a very pleasant evening out.

The decor and ambiance of this place is amazing. The music, the people...very unique. Felt totally out of my element, but in a good way. It felt like I was in another world. As for the Kava, ohhhh the Kava. To each his own. I personally did not like this drink. It was very "earthy" and really did taste like "dirty water" as someone had mentioned before. Besides that, I would definitely go back. It was an experience I don't regret.

1 word - Chill. This place is MAD CHILL.

This is not a hookah bar. They do not have hookahs!
They only Kava, Organic ice tea, bottles of water and another made tea that helps your overall body.  No alcohol is served here.

Inside its real neat. It's very dark and relaxing. Kinda hippie'esque. They have a live DJ who spins really cool music. Late last night he started mixing some dubstep into it. There is alot to look at. Interesting but yet trippy artwork.
The "bartender", Strawberry is his name, was really awesome..Super nice.

I did not try the Kava being that I didnt eat and ive heard it could upset your stomach on no food. Apparently from what I gather, the more you drink Kava, the more you feel. You may not feel much on your first trip here. It has a reverse effect opposite like marijuana. The more often you drink Kava the more it effects you.

I dont know how it tastes but it does look like dirty water or watered down milky coffee. But i hear the taste isnt pleasant but again the more you drink you get used to it.  I do however like the smell of it though.

If your into this sort of thing, definitely stop by, its open till 4AM! Strawberry even hooked my friends up with a bowl after 4AM. He left when we left. Like i said... CHILL!

Okay so this place is chill, this place is relaxing and if you have their special TEA (Which is supposed to relax you) the ambiance and the music is all you need. The tea to be honest looks like dirty water and I know that doesn't sound so appealing but you take a shot of it and you wash it down with fresh pineapple. They even have games and dart boards and a hula hoop. I feel like I walked into another dimension so after you have some wine and tapas next door come on over to relax before going home to sleep :)

PS - My boyfriend @tonycarrera says: Also, no drinking alcohol with kava or you will not feel the effect at all (at least I didn't really feel it - KN), and then later feel the complete effect times 10 in the form of falling asleep at the wheel on your way home... which you guessed it, is pretty close to what happened to us.  (Although this could just be the wine talking) ;)

This bar serves only Kava which to me has a water like consistency even though it looks milky and tastes like saw dust. The place is super super chill and they have games and toys such as hoola hoops, darts, and dominoes, etc lying around. Supposedly, Kava is suppose to relax you however, I didn't feel any affect. My friend and I did 4 shots each which is supposed to be more than enough to have an affect. And just to let you know a "shot" is not your typical alcohol style shot. A shot is half of a small coconut shell- I would say about 2 to 3 alcohol sized shots which is a lot when the stuff tastes like saw dust. The place has fun art and there is a fake tree that takes over the entire place practically. Our server was very nice. They have happy hour which is really cheap ($15 for a huge bowl) so if you actually like Kava you should go during happy hour. Also, I had read that it was not recommend to  drink alcohol when drinking Kava. I did four sake shots about an hour after the kava and I had no problems. My friend also drank as much as me and she didn't feel anything either. It's an interesting place to visit but I don't think I will go back again.

I love the decor and awesome mind expanding books they have here. Kava to me taste like spicy dirt  and isn't the reason I go here. I love the ambiance.... everything from the unique art work, decor, books, music and customers who are great to converse with. I too believe they need to have something else here besides Kava. Not booze because thats not going to mesh with the vibe. Maybe vegi sandwiches and organic ice tea.

I'm not sure why this bar has a subheading with "hookah" because there is nothing but Kava served at this bar.   If was going to write this review when  I first visited, it would be much more to the negative than the positive.  Yes, it is a cool place to look at, but it is a little uncomfortable to be there unless you are aware of the 'dresscode' and understand the vibe that you are walking into.

From the street or even going online and looking at pictures you cannot accurately guage the difference in the vibe that this place exudes from the surrounding shops and restaurants.  You have to be fully prepared to be sucked into a separate dimension complete with a jumbled mixture of trance-trippy-hippies with peace-signs and leather dancing/swaying/jiving to nonsensical music from around the trance/grassroots/grunge/metal genre.   So before you go, you might want to dress the part and get your mind set to have an alternative experience separate from your normal bar night out.

I went with my boyfriend for a datenight, which seemed like a good idea, but if we go again we would defnitely bring an entire group to share the experience with us.  The more the merrier~!

If you dont have and idea, Kava tastes exactly like licking a mud puddle, and the waitress suggested drinking it like taking a shot.  They provide pineapple slices, but I assure you they do not do much to drown out the taste of the Kava.  After doing some research, around the world people only drink Kava in its pure form, so I don't foresee any improvements to the taste happening any time soon.  We were told that for our 'first time' that we would need to drink at least 2-3 bowls of Kava in order to feel the affects, if we even could.  In order to have that many drinks, you wind up buying the big sink which serves about 6 bowls and is served in a turtle shaped sink and you drink out of coconut bowls.   The waitress also explaineed what the feeling was supposed to be like, but since there isn't anything comparable, it is difficult to describe.  Your body feels kind of drunk, while your mind seems to open up and become hyper aware and sensitive of your surroundings while at the same time becoming calm.  This seems like a conundrum of feelings, but that is the best of how I can describe it.

At first I thought I would never put myself through it again, but now thinking about it, I will follow my own suggestions, dress the part, mentally prepare myself for the experience, and invite others to share in the drinking of Kava!  Can't wait to go again!

This place is really cool inside, with a forest type theme and games to encourage interaction and keep you busy. They also have books around. The thing is, the place only serves kava, for $5 a "shot" (a cocunut cup) or $21 for a larger bowl to share. I had passed here several times before trying it and it always interested me but unfortunately I stopped in on the wrong night. I was still living in Miami at the time and after a long day at the beach decided on eating at the Mexican place next door to this.

Important thing to know, drinking kava on an empty stomach is supposed to intensify the effect, or at least it will take less kava for you to feel the kava take effect.

Also, no drinking alcohol with kava or you will not feel the effect at all, and then later feel the complete effect times 10 in the form of falling asleep at the wheel on your way home... which you guessed it, is pretty close to what happened to us.

We had a couple of margaritas at the Mexican place before we came to this place and when I asked the person serving kava if this was ok she said it was dangerous for us to drie home after more than 1 shot each. So we had one shot each and didn't feel the effects the entire time we hung out and played darts. Then, on our way home we got extremely tired and had to sing to stay awake! When we got home we decided to take a nap..which lasted 3 hours! Be careful with this stuff, when I researched it I learned this stuff is used by many cultures and prepared in many forms for different uses (such as a cure for insomnia).

If you need to use your imagination to think of how it might taste, remember when you were a little kid and wondered what dirt and water combined might taste like? That's Kava for ya! All in all, it's not the most disgusting thing in the world but it's not enjoyable to drink. Hence, why you drink it as a shot. It's worth a try. I'm going to give it another shot.

This place is truly a gem in downtown Hollywood. You may walk by this place all the time and would never know what is inside.. It really is mystic. I love the decor and the massive tree at the bar. It is a very mellow atmosphere with all walks of life. There are many books laying around and music playing in the background.

Now the Kava... yuck.. not my kind of thing. I just couldn't stomach it. It is definitely an acquired taste. The pineapple pieces eaten after-wards were a life saver.

We ordered a bowl and took shots. We didn't want to finish it, but the bartender kind of persuaded us to. He said the Kava had "intoxicating" powers and you would feel relaxed upon leaving. I did feel relaxed, but I wouldn't credit that to the Kava, but rather the atmosphere.

I would recommend it just for the experience.

Mystic Water Kava Bar serves one thing: kava. You buy a bowl and then drink it out of coconut shells. A $21 bowl is enough for two or three people to share.

Kava is not delicious, but does make your tongue numb--this is its primary quality. Though, according to wikipedia, it also makes you calm, talkative, social, and clear thinking.

The bar is very dark. It feels like you are sitting in the forest at dusk, which is calming.

Very very very cool place. I wish it was a little bigger and also had a menu or full bar but still the idea is great. It is a really gross tasting cold tea that makes you "relaxed" without the bad effects of any other method. Some say it just numbs your throat. If you are laid back or artsy, you will love this place. The decorations were awesome too. Hidden gem, try this place out!
