Avoid if at all possible. I've ordered here 3 times. First was fairly decent, second there were pieces of metal scour brush in my food. 3rd time food was just plain bad and all I ordered was soup. Staff on the other hand is very sweet and nice, I just wish the food was worth it.
You're much better off going up to Golden Chef on North av at Kedzie for cheap Chinese.
Being from the south side of Chicago, I'm accustomed to no frills Chinese takeout. The egg rolls are more in line with what I you get on the south side. Not those itty bitty little fried wanton wrappers that are generally overpriced. The orange chicken was decent. Young's has excellent orange chicken if that is what you are looking for tonight. I will definitely order again.
Review Source:DISGUST is the word I choose to use to define the meal I had.
I ordered the sweet and sour shrimp lunch special. Please STAY AWAY FROM THE SWEET AND SOUR SHRIMP!!!!! The dough rings that came with it had a corner of a piece of shrimp in them. Also, the dough rings were extremely hard. They did give me a lot of shrimp fried rice...but absolutely no soy sauce....which left the rice dry. The egg roll taste like it is filled with salt and was partially burnt.
The only reason I gave this restaurant 1 star is because delivery was quick....but when I think about it.....It's probably because the food was old and they just heated it up in the microwave.
(Headed to the bathroom to purge what I swallowed)
i should of just had a bowl of cereal for dinner. since i had to anyway.
I was told delivery would be an hour. when an hour passed and i had no food, i called again and she said its out on the truck and should get there soon. 30 min later i called again and they couldnt find my order. once she found it on their computer (or took it again) she said 20 min and she would take 15% off. in all, the food got to my apartment 2 HOURS after i had ordered. oh,
the veggie egg rolls were chalky.
the crab ragoon was ok. but very little crab.
the kung pao shrimp was bad. it was bland, and tasted like it could have come out of a campbells soup can, if campbells did chinese food.
over all, horrible experience. the price is cheap- but so is the food and the service.
The food is bland and has no flavor. Â The chicken which was to be crispy was soft and flavorless. Â The Orange chicken had more of an orange kool-aid flavor instead of tasting like real oranges. Â The steak app was chewy and dull. Â I will not be ordering from you again. Â You really need to step up your game.
Review Source:I really like this restaurant and fortunately it's just walking distance from my apartment. I have had their sesame chicken and sweet & sour chicken and they have both been fantastic. Not to mention, their egg rolls are absolutely delicious!!!
For those of you who read my reviews, you know that I am absolutely a stickler for price and value - fortunately, the value here is incredible. I eat a lot and their portions here easily last for two or more meals and their lunch special only came to about 8 dollars and change including a "complimentary" can of pop.
I have ordered take out and delivery from many different Chinese restaurants and this by far is my first choice for right now...might even get some tonight.
It's a rarity that my boyfriend is in the mood for Chinese food, so we decided to give this place a shot. Â We had food delivered from here, so I can't speak to any inside location experience. Â We ordered the General Tso's chicken and I got the Mongolian Beef, which is a standard option in most Chinese restaurants. Â I believe we got a large, and the portion was huge! Â We were able to have a few meals with this order. Â The food was very flavorful and tasty. Â I had no complaints, and appreciate knowing that I can order food from here again and will get something good. Â The prices are comparable to other spots, and it's nice to have the option of the regular or large portion.
Review Source:First we ordered delivery and were shocked that it arrived within 20 minutes. When we realized how much food we got for $6, how good the food was, and how the delivery was so quick because it was 1 block away we decided to try it again. This time we got take out and I was impressed by how clean, new and presentable the kitchen and dining area were.
Review Source:Anddddd the search for decent Chinese in Chicago continues. Â Ugh, yet another dud. Â WHY does a city this size have such a hard time landing a decent Chinese restaurant???
Alright, here's the deal on this one.
Crab Rangoon - Sooooo much cream cheese, sooooo little crab.
Moo Shu Pork - Really sweet. Â Like weirdly sweet.
Shrimp Egg Foo Young - Pattie was fine, gravy tasted like water. Â Super super bland.
Combination Fried Rice - BLAND. Â Tasted like nothing, no matter how much soy sauce we put on it.
And that's that. Â They made it past one star cause the lady at the pick up counter was really nice, and the portions were big. Â Unfortunately we saw no reason to save the leftovers, so a lot of those big portions went to waste.
Ordered food when I house sat my brother's place at the end of December and still very impressive. The order was delivered in 15 minutes (even though it's just around the corner).
Moo Shu Pork - awesome (wish they would add more pancakes with it).
Mongolian Fried Rice - good, still think the combo fried rice is even better. Â
General Tsao chicken - still awesome!
Honestly, cannot complain about the food from New China. Folks who live in that area are fortunate that there is a good Chinese restaurant around there. Wish they would open one up here close to Gurnee Mills. One can eternally hope... right? LOL!
I was looking for a good Chinese restaurant in the area and had a hard time finding one.... So I did a yelp search and found this place.
It is very reasonably priced. Lots of veggies, which tasted fresh. Big proportions.
I had some crab rangoon and cashew shrimp.... my boyfriend (who loves spicy) had kung pao chicken and wonton soup. Both of us were happy, full, and had food for lunch the next day.
I will definitely go back!
Ordered up from New China Restaurant twice in the past week or so and both times the food came lickety-split and piping hot. The first time I ordered the person taking the order sounded so pleasant that if I were Chinese, I'd want her to be my Chinese Grandmother...though I'm not really sure how old she was, so perhaps she could have been my Mom?
Okay enough with the nonsense. The first order was Crab Rangoons and Mongolian Beef (the new style apparently). Crab Rangoons were filled to the brim with whatever gets stuffed inside and cooked to perfection. Very tasty, albeit a bit salty. That was not the case the second time I ordered as those were excellent. The Mongolian Beef was a large portion, but didn't really have all that much flavor. Veggies were still crisp though and the beef was plentiful, so all in all nothing a bit of soy sauce couldn't cure.
Second time around I decided to try the Beef Egg Foo Young as I sometimes like to stretch my Chinese food into many meals the following day, and this order definitely allowed me that pleasure. Four patties for the ridiculous price of around $7 is pretty solid, and they tasted pretty good. Nothing phenomenal...nothing life changing, but like I said, for the price you can't go wrong. The only problem was the little container of fluffed up rice which was almost used up with just two of the patties. Whatever happened to Chinese places packing those little white containers with rice until they nearly burst at the seams? This isn't the only place I've run across this problem so I guess times are tough and corners need to be cut.
Anyway I would order more food from New China, but will probably try other menu items to see if anything really sets this place apart.
I get loads of restaurant menu fliers in my mailbox.... So, I gave this place a try.... First order.... basic Chinese fare, beef chop suey etc... Excellent! Â Arrives piping hot as with most Chinese take out joins. Â The food is packed in reusable plastic trays, nice.
Second order next week in fact.....Sweet and Sour shrimp... Lord! Â What a disaster! Â One container of just oversized onion ring looking discs with way, way too much fortune cookie dough around a puney piece of shrimp that one would have to research under the lens of a microscope to find. The batter was too excessive and hard as nails. Â Not the least bit appetizing or flavorful. Â Horrendous! Â Threw most of it straight in the trash....
The sweet and sour component came separately packaged with one tomato and one green pepper and one piece of pineapple, seriously! Â I have never had sweet and sour anything from a Chinese place that came anywhere close to the abortion I witnessed here.
How can a Chinese place make excellent chop suey and completely screw up on sweet 'n' sour shrimp?
I am afraid to try anything else here for fear I'd be wasting money on something I would not find the least bit appetizing.......
Signed,
Disappointed
Word of advice: don't order the dinner for two if it's just for yourself!! I feel moreso Chinese now from this.. well not really, but it was a lot of food! I will have leftovers for a while I think..
This is your standard Chinese restaurant.. It hits the spot when you want Chinese takeout though I guess you can eat there.. Food is decent.. it is no better and no worse than other places like this..
It's really a 3 star place, but I gave a bonus for speed and close proximity between Wicker and Humboldt Park...
Sweet & sour chicken - very good
Crab Rangoon - lots of filling and thus very good
Egg drop soup - very, very bad - i will stick to Jim Ching for that one
Had the food delivered within 25 min and everything was super crispy and hot!
I'm sure as I try more dishes, I will update the review
I've gotten the lunch special here probably over 50 times, and I can't say I've ever been slightly disappointed.
Now I'll be the first to admit this review is highly biased- at the time I was living right on the Paseo Boricua strip, and it was the closest Chinese restaurant. Also at this time, I found myself frequently broke, and frequently drunk at all hours.
So keep in mind this is not gourmet Chinese food, this is hangover-ready-greasy-goodness, at an obscenely low price. The people there are really nice, and the portions are heaping.
If you're in the neighborhood, they'll have your food ready in 15 minutes for pickup. I recommend Mushu pork and the Sesame Chicken.
I read all the reviews here. I went through the menu on http://allmenus.com four or ten times. I finally chose the crab rangoon, delish as posted; the egg drop soup, a melange of oil, corn syrup and egg; the orange chicken, sub-par even for take out; and the sweet and sour pork which was surprisingly good. I will try something else next time and let you know!
Review Source:This is the crappiest delivery chinese I have ever had. The beef lo mien had absolutely NO flavor, the spicy hunan shrimp was not spicy, the rice and egg rolls were dry, and they took an hour and a half to deliver even though they are six blocks from me! The ONE good thing, and the reason I will give them two stars, were the crab rangoon. Pretty damn good.
I will never order from them again.
It may be that I just love grungy hole in the wall restaurants, but this place is totally me. Â The staff are personable and great with remembering folks, they always know I want the Crab Rangoons, which are seriously the best I have ever tasted. Â
As the other reviewers mention, the portions are gigantic, "small" or "lunch special" means "share with one other person", I've never ordered a "large," I can only imagine the magnitude. Â The small sizes are $7-8, and as that can feed two people, it comes out super cheap.
Things to get: Â Again, the Crab Rangoons. Â We once got a platter of 64 (I think that was the number) as dinner for eight people, and mowed right through them. Â The Hawaiian Chicken is really good, and the non breaded meat dishes (e.g. Chicken with Pea Pods) are also good.
Things to avoid: Â Lo Mein, which is always more bean sprouts than noodles, and uses weird crispy noodles - yuck.
This is my neighborhood Cheap Chinese place. Â It's the greasy comfort food I need every once in a while. Â Once I got into a fight with my boyfriend, who stormed out of the apartment, only to return 20 minutes later with dinner from New China and a hug. Â You can't beat that.
The menu is pretty long and full of standard cheap Chinese food, some of which is shockingly excellent (Crab Rangoons, buy them) and some which is disappointing every time (General Tso's Chicken). Â You don't know if something will be good until you try it, and this makes it a good place to order from when freinds are over.
The staff are friendly and fast and aren't above teasing you if you order take out and show up a half hour later then you intended, or asking how you are after you've visited a few times. Â It makes it all the nicer if you are there to pick up some easy dinner after a rough day.
Portions are huge and often on the soup-y side, so plan for a bit of a mess and left overs.
New China is great. Â Aside from having the fastest delivery I've seen in this city (8 minutes one night! Â I think they have a wok in a car), Â they also have the biggest, baddest crab rangoons I've ever seen. Â I use general tso's as my benchmark for chines placess and theirs does not disappoint, although it leans a little to the sweet side. Â Their beef lo-mein is very exciting, as is thier sesame chicken.
Very friendly staff, and great service. Â I live in the neighborhood and have never been egged, but I would not recommend trying to get their during puerto rican independance day!
I love this place!!! Â The food can be a tad oily near the bottom sometimes, but if you ask them they will use less oil. Â They make my food to order cause I'm vegan and they are always friendly. The woman who owns it even remembers my voice when I call. Â They have pretty run of the mill selections, but I think they make them better than any other place I have been. Â The servings are huge and the smoothies (when they have them) are delicious. The only shitty part about New China is the neighborhood. Â I got egged(yes, egged, as in some kids started throwing eggs at me, I had egg in my hair and dripping down my back... it sucked... eggs... seriously) walking to pick up my food and during Chicago-rican independence day, forget about even walking around there. On the regular, kids are standing around outside spitting and talking shit. Â Their delivery is almost always there sooner than they say it will be and the delivery guys are very nice. Order some Chinese food tonight!
