Run, don't walk away from the restaurant. Â What a disaster. Â Went there last night with seven people, only one other table of people being served. Got a glass of water that was chipped in two places so could easily have cut my lip. Â Never got a plate or napkin or knife or spoon, though asked for it a couple of times. Â Food came and I had nothing to eat it with and the waitress wasn't coming back with the utensils so I had to take them from an empty table. Â Some in the group didn't get their food until 50 minutes after ordering (hey, Chinese places are known for quck delivery). Plus, the gratituity was already added to the bill -- otherwise I would tip them absolutely nothing. Â This is a miserable place to go. Â It also looks depressing and no light out front to help us find the place. Â My first time there last night will be my last. Â
Don't make the same mistake. Â Don't go to this place!
Please note this is not the same owners of new china like in the 90's. They cared about what they served. I have been going there for 20 years and yesterday the food was so bad that I had to write a review. Â The quality of food was poor, thin and cheap meat I would not serve this to my dog. The egg rolls had corn and rice in them, it's like they stuffed the cheapest food they could into it. They over charged us it may have only been a dollar but when the food is bad the portions are small and the prices are up you take notice. I would suggest to anyone in skokie to go somewhere else the food was so bad we spent 50 dollars and threw away all the left overs.
Review Source:I'm SO conflicted about what to write about New China. Â I've had New China and it's been excellent... Â I've also had New China and had it land squarely in the middle of "meh" territory. Â I wish I knew what the variable was (ex: Â "excellent on tuesdays!"), but I have yet to decipher it.
The restaurant itself is unassuming. Â It's in a double wide berth, but strangely it's rare that you see someone actually eating in. Â Almost always you'll run into another person who is there for take-out, so that's a great sign. Â But I don't think I've ever seen more than two tables occupied simultaneously.
Parking is very hit-or-miss, mostly on the miss side. Â The restaurant is in a strip mall with few spaces in front. Â Additionally there is another restaurant in the same strip, so that puts additional pressure on the parking.
The food varies between GREAT and mediocre. Â Shrimp with lobster sauce? Â GREAT! Â Mongolian beef? Â Ehhhhhh.... Â Sometimes spicy things are marked as spicy, sometimes they're a little bland. Â I haven't ordered enough things enough times to find out (yet) if it's a variation in how they spice the dishes or if the dishes themselves are inconsistent.
If you're looking for the bottom line, I'd summarize it as a solid Chinese place that occasionally strays into great territory. Â (Which, now that I'm thinking about all the mediocre-on-their-best-day chinese food around, is better than most!)
THE BEST CHINESE FOOD!!! Â i used to live in skokie but moved near elk grove. Â i still try and visit new china at least once a month and it's definitely worth the 30 min drive. Â i usually get beef chow fun and/or fried rice, but i've tried many different things on the menu and it's all good. Â their staff is super friendly, and the ambiance is surprisingly nice. Â they even have a koi pond! Â :D Â eat here. Â you won't regret it.
Review Source:The first time I tried their fried rice, I thought it was amazing. Lately, I believe they changed their chef or something because it is not the same!
They have a great variety of food and serving sizes are big.
Also, I never see people dine in. I always dine in; my boyfriend and I are always the only people there. I do see a lot of people do carry out.
You would think because there are not that many people and you are the only people there, you would get the best service and attention... Wrong!
They never check in with you if you need refills or something else... By the time you are done eating, they decide to ask you if you need something...
Most of the time they are too busy spending time on the computer to check on you .
I would give them 2 stars but my boyfriend really likes his food, so I'll take that in consideration.
Updated review. Several days after I posted an unfavorable review, I received a phone call from the owner of New China. He had taken the time to look up my phone number and contact me. He was very apologetic regarding my bad experience and he offered me a full refund or that I could order another dish at no cost to me. Â I must say, I was very impressed that he took such an interest in his customers. Â Because of his reaching out, I am willing to give this restaurant another chance. His commitment to customer satisfaction is admirable!!!
Review Source:Seriously, the best Chinese food out there! Â I was a little skeptical at first judging by the outside of the storefront, but it surprisingly had a nice ambiance in the interiors. I ordered the house egg rolls, which were huge, just like everyone said they were.. and delicious. They're definitely not your typical egg rolls that you can get at any other Chinese joint. I also ordered the Hot & Sour Soup, and i am hooked- i always order hot & sour soup at chinese restaurants and always find it disappointing but this place has the best hot & sour soup i've ever had (and i've had many). For my main entree I ordered the General Tso Chicken and New China did not fail me once again. I had a bite of everyone else's dishes and they all tasted equally amazing. The thing I love the most about this place is how everything is made to order from scratch from their egg rolls to their main dishes, and even their soup. Most places make a giant batch and heat it up before they serve it, but the extra few minutes they make you wait for your hot soup is worth it, knowing that it was made to order. Â One thing i don't get is why Yelp listed this place as 2 dollar signs ($$) when it should really be more like just 1 dollar sign ($). You definitely get more than your money's worth here. Just writing this review is making me crave this place again.
Review Source:For the price, this is above average. Also, it is open on Monday unlike most Skokie chinese joints.
Pluses: The crab rangoons are damn good, as isthe egg foo young, and I thinnk the general tso's chicken is remarkable (though not spicy at all). I'd like a few more more broccoli/carrots/hotness, but some will find the mostly-meat dishes a plus.
Minuses: Everyone talks about the eggroll but...meh. Oh, and about the canned mushrooms (which another yelper mentioned). Those things should be erased from the face of the earth except for maybe survival situations.
YELP FAIL!!! Â Tried this place based on reviews, but for me, New China got old fast! Â My husband liked his Hunan tofu, but that's the end of the success story. Â Mongolian beef had two, count 'em, TWO pieces of green onion in the whole shebang, basically a big pile of brown meat with a garnish. Â Mushroom fried rice had bloated canned mushrooms, I picked them out (and it takes a lot for me to remove a mushroom). Â Black bean garlic sauce was standard take-out-fare, verging on tasty but that might be relative to the other bland things on my plate. And no way are these the best egg rolls in the area. Â Size is all it's got going for it, you can get better (and bigger) at Mee Mah. Â It wasn't horrible (assuming it stays down), fine for folks who live in that neighborhood with a Chinese food jones, I guess, but once was more than enough.
Review Source:My visit to New China was the sum of [ hunger + craving Chinese + yelp reviews ]. The restaurant is located right on Dempster Ave in a small strip mall with minimal glitz and glamor.
The interior sports a miniature water fountain which produces sounds synonymous to a deep fryer, a few high school girls running the front house and possibly a ninja of a cook in the back.
Chines restaurant usually have a balanced ying-yang feeling and I was thrown off my zing a little bit because the booths in this joint are really low to the ground and the other tables and chairs are sky high.
Nonetheless, the food at New China is really good. We tried a pork dish for 2 which came with 2 HUUUUGGGEEE egg rolls ( they were as big as a 1/2 lb burrito), a pork entree, a side of white rice and 2 almond cookies for desert. The food was delicious and all the flavors are balanced and blend together perfectly.
I would definitely recommend this joint to other Yelper.
PS: the menu has coupons right on it !
Cute, homey restaurant in a convenient area of Skokie. We ordered one of the dinners for two, and the food was yummy and filling. It came with an entree of pork with vegetables, a HUGE egg roll, cookies, and fortune cookies. The highlights were the entree because they used fresh, delicious ingredients and the egg roll was filling and satisfying, and quite possibly the biggest one I've ever seen. A great meal, and definitely hit the spot for Chinese, and thats unusual for me, because usually at Chinese places I leave craving Thai.
The restaurant was decorated simply but tastefully and they also had a running pond with koi fish!
Give this place a shot cause it's a standout in a food genre where stand outs are far and few inbetween.
Man, this place is good - I was shocked. I thought I was going to get trite, oily fast food Chinese. One of the few good egg drop soups in the Chicago area. The menu, though Americanized, is really diverse and interesting. The pot stickers are large with a generous filling, not the tiny, crunchy ones you so typically get. The lo mein is pretty unique. Since this is a Cantonese place, they have the very skinny noodles, almost like vermicelli, and it's tangy and slightly sweet you can taste the plum sauce. We got Mongolian beef lo mein, and I highly recommend it. Moreover, the sauces of the other dishes, pretty standard Hung Sue and Szechuan, were really good. Nothing was oily, everything executed well. Vegetables were fresh and plentiful.
This place is very affordable. They had something that I rarely see: half orders of most dishes available on the dinner menu. That way we could sample a wide variety of dishes. I wish other places offered that.
The negatives? I take it this place does most of its business in deliveries. They had no condiments of their own, only packets. The waitstaff, if you want to call it that, were just some young guys hanging around. They weren't very attentive, but they were very friendly and happily accommodated everything for which I asked. If I'm going to be picky, they could have seared the chicken more before stir frying, but our chicken dish was still damn good.
Once again I found myself pondering a take out decision. Â After deciding against pizza Chinese was the next logical choice. Â After my previous experience at this place I wanted to try it again and I was very pleased.
I ordered the chow fun with hunan beef which is large flat rice noodles with beef, baby corns, broccoli and was just a bit spicy. Â The container was huge and although it says it is for 2 people it could easily last a couple 2 or 3 dinners. Â I also ordered shrimp fried rice which was very good with lots of shrimp. Â Once again the egg rolls were wonderful... possibly the best egg rolls anywhere. Â The even included a small bag of fortune cookies with my order so I was happy.
The food was just ready when i got there and it was well packed and still warm after I drove home (which is a 15-20) minute drive for me.
They also have lunch specials for under $5. Â The hunan beef and curry chicken specials are fantastic and come with fried rice and those uber delicious egg rolls. Â The atmosphere is very nice too although from the outside you would never know.
You know it's good when I'm writing this as soon as I get through the door. Just got home from what has to be the best Chinese restaurant ever! Â I have definitely had more than my fair share of Chinese food. From the outside this place might look a little shady but as soon as you walk through the door you can definitely tell this is a well taken care of establishment. Â The restaurant it self is very well decorated. The walls are painted in nice welcoming colors, they actually have hard wood floors not the normal dingy white tile floors from the 80's, the tables and booths are clean and decorated nicely with REAL bamboo plants(not fake plastic flowers from the dollar store), they have nice paintings on the wall and best of all they have this marble pond with cute koi fishes( normally you see a fish tank with live fish in dirty ass water ) so you can tell these people are smart decorators! Now lets get to the food. I had hot and sour soup, beef and chicken fried rice, beef chow fun, general Tao's chicken, egg roll (YUM) and crab rangoon(YUMMMMYYY!). The hot and sour soup isn't watery, beef chow fun was done to perfection the chow fun sauce was perfect not too sweet not too salty not to mention the beef was sooo tender! Also the egg roll is like HUMONGOUS and the crab rangoon is actually filled and neither of the two were greasy!!! Â Overall best experience EVER! If you haven't tried them then you have never truly eaten Chinese food. Even now after filling myself to the seams I find myself salivating as I write this review. GO EAT!
Review Source:This is the best chinese I have ever had.
The eggrolls are as large as my hand, the crab rangoon is smoking hot and crispy (without being super greasy) and the chicken egg foo young and fried rice are both FILLED with large chunks of white meat. I have this delivered once a week for couch snuggling time. It cannot be beat!
