This place is pretty big but somehow always packed every single time I've been, and the wifi is generally slow. I mean, good for them, getting the business. I've only ever had their coffee (Metropolis, not my favorite but I do like it), which always seemed a little more bitter than it ought to be. The staff is not terribly friendly, and the service is kind of slow...like, if you walk in here to get coffee and there's a line, you should probably just turn around and go somewhere else unless you want to wait eons. I really appreciate that they put soy milk out on the fixins bar so you don't have to ask for it or get charged extra (really, this should be standard everywhere by now). They have some vegan treats in the cooler, but none of them were particularly awesome to me. I do like the way the light comes in through the windows.
Review Source:I have been pretty faithful to New Wave since moving back to Logan Square a year and a half ago. The coffee is ok and the staff are super sweet. They used to have amazing croissants but, tragically, their baker was severely burned and now their pastries are pretty awful. Here's a suggestion to the owner: trade coffee for croissants with La Boulangerie. Apparently the owner of New Wave owns the building of all the businesses right there, including La Boulangerie. And, he forbids La Boulangerie from selling coffee AS WELL as individual pastries. HOW IS THIS LEGAL? AND WHY ARE WE SUPPORTING SUCH PREHISTORIC PRACTICES? What a jerk. Don't cooperation and community trump profit margins? in san francisco, cafes--at least the ones i know-- thrive on supporting each other this way. I will be buying my beans and cups of coffee from the new cafes sprouting up all over Logan Square. See ya New Wave!
Review Source:Well, I'll start by saying I didn't have the coffee here. And that I'm not really familiar with this area of Chicago. I've heard some things... that I thought weren't really true. Until I came here. Now I appreciate my neighborhood coffee shops a lot more.
I love me some metropolis, but I chose not to have it here since it was night. I'm sure they are reliable for coffee. That's not what the 2 star is for. Rather, it's because this is probably the most unwelcoming coffee shop I've ever walked into.
We came to eat ramen down the street and had to wait a bit. Why not stop by this charming bright coffee shop we drove by earlier to relax a bit? Because it's not really a welcoming place. The barista literally did not make eye contact or have any expression on his face. I'm pretty sure he went out of his way to avoid eye contact. The other girl was nicer. Then again, the whole vibe of the place just made me feel very exposed rather than comforted. I guess we just didn't belong there.
My hot cider was nice and warm. Bf's hot chocolate was not very rich, but okay. His extremely overpriced tiny piece of COLD apple pie was haphazardly slapped onto a plate and tasted very below average.
Next time, I'll remember to make reservations for dinner.
You remind me of the babe.
What babe?
The babe with the power.
What power?
The power of voodoo.
Who do?
You do.
Do what?
Remind me of the babe.
This is gonna sound weird, but I swear.to.god I can remember both the smell and taste of breast milk from when I was a babe (with the power). And I can also say that their 'Get Well, Gertie' beverage of steamed milk and mint tea tasted pretty damn close to breast milk (sans the smell, though)... and I mean that in the absolute best way possible. I cuppa that sweet sauce and I went from ready to dance to ready to nap right on the table. It's not a strong or very flavorful drink and I generally despise the thought of milk or squishy cow udders for that matter, but as BIG fan of ET the Extraterrestrial and particularly any parts with kid sister Gertie, I had to have it and I'm glad I did.
I felt like I was going to love NW based on everything I'd heard from friends and the fact that next to Go Kart music, New Wave is my absolute favorite. I was really hoping to hear some on my visit here, but now I'm thinking that the New Wave aspect really only has anything to do with the deco... which at the time included artwork from a local artist who appears to only paint silly pics of cats, which I am ALL about. Â
I don't live in this area so I can't speak to how badly the neighborhood may need an independent coffee shop as others have mentioned, but I just feel like New Wave didn't live up to the hype for me. Every table and seat were full of people, but the library-brand quiet made it really awkward. That and the asshole who felt like it was okay to take his f*cking shoes off and lay horizontally across their full length couch with his hole-y socks and one knee up in the air like he's doing some sort of Playboy spread and then writhing his stupid legs around inside the couch cushions like he's f*cking Rick James or something. F*cking asshole. Other people are all around you, not only looking for a place to sit, but trying to drink open beverages and eat baked goods and they don't want your sour-socked feet stink getting all up in their air... or at least I don't.
I don't know, man. Something about that dude acting like he lived there and everyone around him just being fine with it was a huge turn off, in addition to the astounding silence. I'm not going to rate them any lower because some of their costumers are jackoffasaurs, but I was let down in general. And I guess they took away the old Nintendo video games and stuff that they had- not that I ever would have chosen to play video games over dicking around on my phone, but I think having some sort of sound or interaction between people would have been nice to see. It just seemed like a place that looks like it'd have a lot more character and edge than it did on my experience.
At least the beverages were good and surprisingly affordable for quality. I already mentioned the breast-milky 'Get well, Gertie', but I also sipped some of their seasonal cider, which was unexpectedly frothy and tasted really pure. Like, it made me think twice about when was the last time I'd eaten an actual apple, and make a mental memo do so in the near future... or at least purchase some high-quality cider such as New Waves.
I'd for sure go back, probably with my laptop for a quiet work place and not a meeting spot or place to java up with a date, but I'm not in any hurry.
Oh New Wave. I have such a love/hate relationship with you.
They use Metropolis coffee, which is almost my favorite of all time. The drinks are always predictably tasty. The interior is charming, and I love that they feature local artists. Also, the food is booooomb. Any of their sandwiches I've tried are ridiculously delicious fresh ingredient packed delights. The vegan peanut butter and chocolate Rice Krispie treats are to. die. for.
Howeverrrrrr...
The atmosphere here is so very, very Logan Square. Don't get me wrong, I love Logan Square, but sometimes the attitude is so... Ugh. It takes forever to get your coffee here, and while I don't mind waiting, I often get the vibe that I'm not waiting for any particular reason other than the barista is too cool to move any faster. None of the staff ever smile, ever. And really, not many of the patrons do, either.
Parking is impossible, and as mentioned before, you seriously will wait upwards of 20 mins if there's a line for coffee.
I'm 29 and I often feel like I am WAY too old and uncool to be here. But I still come back. And so, the love/hate goes on.
This place is a chill place to study. Â Staff is pleasant overall. Â Crowd is an interesting mix of hipsters and students. Â Indie music that's just the right volume, and I never have trouble finding seating. Â My only qualm is that I don't think their drinks are as good as other coffee shops. Â So far I've tried latte, soy latte, mocha, even hot chocolate and can't put my finger on why the drinks are not too good. Â They have daily seasonal soups that are okay, and the roast beef sandwich is pretty good and served warm, but tiny for what you pay for.
Review Source:Somewhat close to home so I met up with a friend there. Â Haven't had a chance to eat there yet, but had a latte and was able to converse and do some work. Â Wasn't loud and it was spacious enough so that people aren't in your business while you sit there. Â
Staff was helpful. Â And menu seemed concise and not overdone. Â
Will definitely be back to try their menu next.
So I haven't been to New Wave in awhile, and now I remember why. I was out for a stroll with my boyfriend, and we decided to pop in for a coffee and a sweet. You know, a quick stop in a coffee shop for an actually coffee. There was not a seat to be had, and not because people were chatting and having a coffee as we intended to ... oh no, who does that? It was filled with douchey "trendier than thou" hipsters on their laptops. There 8 ounce coffees had long since dried up, but they continued to sit there running their fingers through their matted hair, surfing for some nonsense on the interweb, and listening to their ipods with shattered screens. Lose the internet, implement a clean hair policy for your staff, and perhaps your business will improve. Ew.
Review Source:The coffee is okay. Â
Free Wifi. Â
Good space to find your own spot...or get away from loud people if you're trying to study. Â
Some of the furniture is really uncomfortable but I've been enough to know which furniture to avoid. Â
Overall it's a nice place if you like to mix up your coffee spot.
I'm surprised to read all of these reviews stating how terrible the baristas are. Whenever I go here, the servers are always pleasant. It's the clientele that sucks. A mediocre coffee shop populated by shitty pretentious artists and wannabe anarchists with mommy issues. The coffee is okay and the prices are reasonable, but I will only do take-out orders.
Review Source:I am SO happy that Gaslight, Reno, and Intellegencia are all movin' in to Logan Square, because New Wave SUCKS.
1. It's gross. Â It's never clean, the tables and chairs are scattered around, the mis-matched sofas and armchairs look like they were found in alleys, and the coffee station is always stacked with fliers and old spoons. Â The lighting is bad, behind the counter always seems chaotic and dirty, and there's a fridge out in the middle of the space that stores milk thats "not for sale". Â The whole interior is just blah. Â Just because you have an old-school Nintendo and some framed 80s albums, it doesn't make the space "designed". Â
2. Â The staff is so irritating. Â Call it what you will, I'm just OVER IT. Â I did my high school and college (and post-college) years, sitting in and working in coffee shops...There is no need to paint yourself as being too-cool to wait on someone when it's YOUR JOB. Â Also...Maybe they should enforce some kind of a dress code? Â I feel like the servers all just rolled out of bed in the clothes that they partied in all weekend. Â I just get grossed out when I see someone with chipped fingernail polish, obviously dirty hair, and ratty clothes making my food and drink. Â I'm not some preppy, perfect, soccer mom, you guys (I'm far from it)....I just think you should present yourself a little better when you're in customer service, handling food.
3. Â The coffee isn't that awesome. Â It's just eh. Â
4. Â IT SMELLS BAD IN THERE. Â It smells like feet or...old dishcloths. Â Whatever it is, I'm so glad I'll never have to go to New Wave again. Â Ever.
Pros: Great coffee, all hail Metropolis. Plentiful and comfortable seating. The music is that so it will not disrupt studying but loud enough to keep your convo with your coffee buddy private.
Cons: The staff is snooty and unwelcoming. They ALMOST make it not worth checking out and seem to be proud of it.
Not a coffee drinker here but I will say that their teas both hot and cold are awesome. Â They also serve sandwiches like the swordfish which is actually tuna and bacon or the johnny fever being a spiced up roast beef. Â Overall not a bad option for a Logan Square lunch and the atmosphere is pretty cool with local art and hipster girls are can be kind of cute to look at while you are in line.
Review Source:I'm new to the area and starry-eyed, plus the people in there are always pretty so I checked it out. The prices are tragicomical, but what really sucked, was when I went in the other day, I asked if they had any pumpkin-flavored-anythings, since that is delicious so whatever. The guy at the register said no, so ok, no problem. (This is not the suck part.) I went and stood at the other end of the bar to wait for my drink , and the guy walked over to the barista making it and said, "We should really get some pumpkin stuff in here." She said, "Why?" (in a 'tude-y tone that doesn't translate here, but totally perked my ears for more 'tude from that little 'tude monster) and he said, "I keep getting asked." And SHE said, "They can go fuck themselves at Starbucks, then." He tried to whisper to her, "... Wait one of them is right there." (ONE OF WHOM.) She's all, "So? Are you gonna tell the manager and get me fired?" And they lauuughhhed because maybe she's the manager or something, I have no idea. But, ughh. Come on, Janeane Garofalo circa Reality Bites - I will not be your sheepish Winona. (I totally was. Totally wussed out, even thanked her for my drink and pretended I hadn't overheard her because she probably had on a nail polish color that intimidated me or something.)
To be fair, I'm sure that working there probably sucks sometimes, but I manage to be friendly and respectful to the people there, despite the fact that I'm only ever in New Wave to sit and study super, super depressing shit, so, let's just agree that everything sucks for everyone all of the time, and that it's no excuse to be a cunt about it. And I tip generously and consistently, despite those prices, 'cause that's not the barista's fault, and it's my choice to go there and be BRUTALLY verbally assaulted, like, indirectly but still. What I'm saying is, I am amazing so at least treat me like I'm not the worst. More than rude it was just... really awkward and bizarre. Go out back, take a smoke break, wash your lensless glasses while you pick out the next Void song to play (jk you don't listen to Void), pull yourself together, and when you come back, make sure you BRING SOMETHING FUCKING PUMPKIN DELICIOUS WITH YOU.
Just found out today about the Boulangerie bullshit and blocking them from making cofffee. Â Went in, tried to order coffee, was infomed of the embargo, apologized to them and decided to write this review. Â Bullshit... Â read the other reviews.
PS - their coffee has gone way down hill. Â Espresso not much better than Starbucks any more.
Gave it another shot 2 1/2 years later, but the drip coffee is still super bitter, and their espresso drinks (latte) wasn't the right milk/coffee ratio. Â I don't know if they follow instructions, or have inadequate training, but they are doing something wong, based on their beans, it should be above average at minimum.
As for La Boulangerie, they are the dummies that signed a bad lease, don't fault New Wave for enforcing it. Â Almost every coffee shop in any building would ask for exclusivity clause.
It's really really unfortunate that the owners have chosen to escalate their "issues" with La Boulangerie. Their latest action goes beyond protecting the business and seems to have the goal of driving the bakery out of business.
Beyond that, I've always found their service to be slow & the atmosphere to be harried and uninviting.
I love to support local businesses, I just wish that New Wave did too.
Gross. Apparently I am a couple years late on the battle between the crusty bowling alley/coffee shop and the French bakery. In being so hubristic you don't acknowledge that you serve a bad product and leave the way to link businesses with someone who does it better. Laws are never created to actually help people, they are to protect some from others. In using the law to attempt to protect your business, you've hurt your own, someone else's and also driven down the good for all of us.
Let people decide for themselves who's croissant they want to buy
This place is the definition of hipster coffee shop: complete with used furniture, original Nintento consoles, vegan menu items, etc... With that said, they have some damn good coffee and the place is always hoppin' with people taking a drink to-go, taking advantage of wi-fi, or reading a paper/mag/book. They also have a good amount of outdoor seating as well.
Review Source:Blah blah New Wave is mean. Blah blah blah poor La Boulangerie is only allowed to sell me 25 croissants. Yeah, that's right. Bread dude signed a contract promising not to sell coffee and croissants. Bread dude has now made it his life's work to subvert that contract. Yadda yadda, life is but a cruel hoax.
The coffee here is really good, and I fancy myself a Gertie Get Well when I'm grinding my teeth from overcaffeination. I also like that I can hole up here for hours to work, and they have enough food options to get me through lunch *and* dinner when necessary. Having said that, I wouldn't mind so much if New Wave gave up the croissant dustup in favor of some high-quality bagels. I also wouldn't be put out in the least if they made a table & chair upgrade. Some of those seats have seen hard times, man. It hurts to look at, and to sit upon.
Hipster paradise indy coffee shop. They brew with Metropolis beans, which are best in the business. Good shop, wifi, tables, often there are few or no seats available, though there is an outdoor seating area on the sidewalk. For the best coffee experience, grab a croissant from next door at the French bakery La Boulangerie and come over for the coffee of your choosing.
La Boulangerie: <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/la-boulangerie-chicago#hrid:r52V1WonMK2-QeHStDJUwQ/src:self">http://www.yelp.com/biz/…</a>
I don't drink coffee everyday, so the cafe is not the methadone clinic to me like it is for a lot of people who wake up in the morning shaking. I drink coffee purely for pleasure and not for maintenance. I do like New Wave better than any of the other coffee shops I've been to in Chicago. It reminds me of a little bit of San Francisco dolloped in Chicago with one big plop.
Its always crowded, so there a feeling of relief when people walk in, peruse the room and turn right around and leave. Its like we all just psychically willed them to leave in our caffeine induced state of unified mind.
The coffee is Metropolitan which is tasty, smooth and easy on the stomach. Generous cup size and reasonable price. Sometimes the art exhibit on the walls is genuinely good, which is saying a lot for a coffee shop. Caffeine kills my appetite, so I have never eaten there. Looks like standard coffee shop fare. I've had plenty of time to study the food displays, having stood in line for what seems like an eternity sometimes.
If you have been to Burning Man, its kind of like Center Camp with air conditioning and less nudity.
My son spent this last school year studying in Paris and I had the good fortune to visit him.  We enjoyed the many different  cafes and boulangeries so having recently discovered The La Boulangerie in Logan Square I decide to stop by for a cup of coffee and a couple of pain au chocolat.  WOW, what  a shock to find out that because of a lease agreement, La Boulangerie is NOT allowed to sell coffee nor can they sell individual croissants. Them must sell the croissants (and other pasteries) in groups of eight.  How assinne, senseless and ridiculous is that.  Well much to my dismay I left without making a purchase as I really did not have a taste for anything else although I am sure the other products would have been delicious.
I walked a couple doors down to The New Wave Cafe and purchased a coffee and two pain au chocolat to go. Â As I waited for my coffee I asked the cashier if he knew anything about the silly restriction at La Boulangerie. Â He had a quizzical look about him as he said that he had never heard of such a thing. Â I paid the bill and left a dollar tip for which the cashier thanked me.
I drove off and enjoyed the coffee and the pain au chocolat not so much as there was hardly any chocolate in it unlike the ones I had in Paris. Â Ok ,well so much for that. Â
I searched on YELP and much to my surprise I discovered through a posting by Adam S. that the lease agreement La Boulangerie has is with the owner of The New Wave Cafe who happens to own the building. Â WOW! Â What a capitalist. NOT.
Price controls so that New Wave can have a monopoly on individual sales. Â Who can afford to buy eight items as once?
This left an awful taste in my mouth and I will NEVER spend a single dime at The New Wave Coffee shop. Â I will save my pennies if I have to (or get a couple friends to go in on a purchase) so I can buy the eight items at La Boulangerie. Â In the mean time I hope they get a better lease or better yet find a better land lord.
Enjoyed my second trip to this coffee place a lot more than my first trip. Â My husband and I came here for a casual breakfast and were not disappointed.
We ordered oatmeal, granola, almond croissant and iced drinks, everything was quite good. Â I adore oatmeal and this was the largest bowl of oatmeal I have ever been served. Â It is huge, defenitely enough for two people. Â The oatmeal comes with raisins, cranberries, walnuts, Â with or without milk for $3.99. Â The granola is a much smaller serving but it was tasty. Â The granola is Costco brand and this amused me. An indie coffee place selling big-box granola. Â The pastries and coffeeare from local area merchants. Â The iced coffee and tea were very good.
Very relaxed atmosphere with a large outside sitting area that was great for people watching. Â I'm glad I gave this place another try.
Okay I'll admit that hipsters amuse me.  I am not offended by  mustache sportin', Paul Bunyon shirt wearing, winter hat in summer done up hipsters.  I merely assume that Jesus Christ, Mohammad  and Vishnu flew in on their flying saucer and planted the seeds of the modern day hipster (which have flourished in Williamsburg and Logan Square)  to entertain the rest of us.
That being said, I hate the food, love the coffee and this joint gets a three-ski from me-ski.
Oh yeah... open up at 6 am you lazy ass hipsters. Â That's when men need coffee.
OK so I live across the street from this place, so the location alone gives it a bonus star from me. Just to be honest with you here.
New Wave is one of those places you need to have in your 'hood. It's big and has lots of tables to conspicuously work on your laptop or write in your Moleskin with a thoughtful tortured look on your face. Yes, young girl writing what has to be some amazingly interesting poetry in that Moleskin of yours, I've seen you there. There are big old sofas and armchairs and old issues of Saveur and flyers for shows and mostly terrible art on the walls and IT'S EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT IT TO BE.
They serve and sell Metropolis coffee, which is generally good stuff, and the Peru Balcones remains one of my favorite beans to buy for making pour-over at home. They can actually pull off a decent traditional cappuccino, which is a godsend, as most places like New Wave will have a "small" capp be like 12oz of terrible. The pastry selection is solid, and their sandwiches are pretty damn good.
The baristas are pretty nice and know what they are doing. They also usually play good music, which is a benefit as well.
So yeah, New Wave isn't something I'd seek out as a espresso mecca or something, but as a local neighborhood coffee shop to drink, eat, see and be seen, "work" on your laptop or hang out playing the Atari, it's great.
The iced lattes are very good but they seriously never get my order right. I hardly come here anymore because A) I have to repeat my order several times and wait for them to make the right drink (always a small iced latte...) and B) because the baristas have major attitude and it is rather unpleasant and unprofessional. I get that it is a coffee shop but the 'tude is rude.
Went back after a long hiatus today while at the farmer's market. Won't be back. Done.
New Wave is definitely a cool place to be. Like, it's filled with cool people, hanging out and being cool. The sandwich selection is rad (especially the Flashdance). The spinach croissants are so good I have almost wept with joy while eating them. My bandmate and I like stopping in here late on Friday/Saturday nights for a caffeine boost before heading out to perform a show.
But: it's always effing freezing here, whether it's hot or cold outside. And the music can be crazy loud - maybe because it's a huge space and the baristas need to hear it? I dunno. I like coffee shop background noise, but it can be really, really loud in here in a way that distinguishes New Wave from other places. For me, that's a bad thing.
First, let me say, I am sorry to the owners and employees of this local business. I wish I liked you guys, it would be so nice for both of us. However...
New Wave coffee. If you like New Wave music, this does not mean you will like this large, ineffectively laid out coffee shop. It feels like a college cafeteria trying to be super hip. They have an NES in there. I love Nintendo, but somehow it comes off as asinine. I just hate it inside this place. Sometimes I stop in to get coffee, but it's only out of convenience! And, almost always, I regret it. Very, very rarely, do I get decent service. Even if I do, I have to evaluate it in my head, and think, was that really good service, or was it just good for this shit-hole? Anyway, you obviously can tell I loathe this place, and it has a lot to do with decent coffee being ruined by everything else a coffee shop is supposed to be - quiet, comfy, and nice - so I won't continue on, but just know that I'd rather walk 2 miles barefoot to a McDonald's than come here.
Another reason I have a chip on my shoulder towards this place is the whole deal with La Boulangerie. I feel like if they were allowed to serve coffee and do what they wanted to do, then maybe, just maybe, New Wave would like to speed up their service and step it up a bit, but why bother, when you have 50 hipsters showing up because it's around the block?
Try Cafe Mustache, Ipsento, Township, anything else...
The menu's okay, nothing spectacular. The coffee's better than Starbucks in that it's not terrible. Â
The whole staff seems to be made up of pseudo-intellectuals in their early- to mid-twenties. I say "pseudo" because their brand of arrogance almost always stems from an inferiority complex, which leads to a subsequent willful ignorance and general assholishness. These issues are never a problem for the true autodidact.
Glad we cleared that up.
Anyway, the shop itself is spacious, with plenty of comfortable places to sit. It's a nice place to relax quietly with a book or a laptop. Their ambient music is good, too (The Breeders' cover of 'Happiness is a Warm Gun' came on while I was there). Because of its convenient location, I'll probably go back, but I'll be sure to keep to myself.
Great location and cool vibe, free wifi is win.
My last visit the dark drip coffee had a weak and "moldy" flavor. I airquoted that because I don't know the real cause, it just tasted off. I purchased the all-day refill but didn't bother to get a single top-up.
My choco croissant tasted not-so-fresh too. hm.
Sandwiches sounded pretty good, will have to try one soon. (Except for the MacGyver, that sounded too weird.)
Boring yelp-style had-to-be-there personal anecdote: I was laptopping over by the north door and a mom actually left her stroller in the corner. Right in front of me. I mean... NOBODY leaves baby in a corner! (That's an 80s pop culture ref, kids. New Wave is full of them.)
I guess for now I mostly like how grungy and tatty this place is. I'll be sure to give the coffee another chance, and speak up in person like a gentleman if it's not to my liking.
I mostly come here for the vegan cookies from paper moon bakery, which are delicious! my favorite is the oatmeal chocolate chip. the almond blueberry cake is very very sweet, but in small doses, is really good. i don't drink coffee, but all of their teas are great, especially the sencha rose green tea.
I also recently got a blackheart sandwich (black bean hummus and veggies on toasted ciabatta) and i was pleasantly surprised. for a coffee shop, they do sandwiches pretty well.
New Wave is a winner!
After a 1 year bocot of New Wave due to their conflict with the french bakery next door I am back. Â Thank you for letting La Buchone Bakery sell their amazing chocolate crussants by anything but the dozen, though it is nice to grab a few extra. Â I have no idea why it took so long or why they were even able to stop a near by business from selling things, this is America after all. Â But I am just happy to be able to enjoy both again!
New Wave is a place where you will find the majority of people on their laptops (good chance it is a macbook) for hours on end. Â I prefer to stick to the classics a play some NES on their old school big screen TV. Â There have defiantly been days where you could find me sipping tea for hours while playing Klax. Â It is a very relaxed atmosphere that begs you to stay around for as much time as you can with their fun art work and very comfortable furniture -- Â with a funky style.
They have an excellent loose leave tea selection and a very good chai tea latte. Â As for fun treats they have a very good selection of tasty things to try, with a surprising number of vegan treats. Â One of my favorites is the spicy cayenne and chocolate scone, it is sorta like a Mexican hot chocolate scone - spicy, sweet, and delicious! Â Seriously, it is worth going in just for their baked goods!
I would not go out of my way to go to New Wave but every time I am in the area I find my self at least stopping in there (if not staying for a few) to grab something tasty!
PROS:
1. TRULY GOOD COFFEE: never amiss, well trained baristas, they really know what they are doing. Â
2. CROISSANTS: Seriously, the most amazing, buttery, croissants i have EVER had. Â They may not have the exactly correct french ratios, but I'm american, I like butter. Â My favs are the ham & cheese stuffed, the almond, and the spinach. the sandwiches are good too.
3. LOCATION - can't beat it.
CONS:
1. SLOW: Since they are so good at being baristas, they take a full 8 minutes to make every drink, i swear. Â Last time i was there there was 3 drink orders in front of mine and I waited for 20 minutes. Â The barista was working very efficiently and it actually was kind of fun to watch her work, but I was running late for work by the time i got my drink - like every cup is a masterpiece. Â Just don't go here if you're on any sort of schedule.
2. COST: When I go in and get a medium soy latte and a croissant - it's at least $8. Â Most of my full meals, cooked at home, I try to keep under $5 per person. Â And I shop at the Dill Pickle! Â So i'm basically getting a snack for the price of two meals.
3. LEASE: I can't let it go - the whole deal with their lease, I mean I'd be pissed if I opened a coffee shop and someone came in and opened another one right next to me, but that is how capitalism works. Â You combat it by offering a better product, better customer service, or better prices. Â That's just how our economic system is supposed to work. Â And I can't fully respect a place that takes short cuts. Â I'm not even sure that it would hold up if they were taken to court by a good lawyer.
4. DECOR: bad colors, too bold, uncomfortable seating, horrible cold ambiance, broken or wobbly chairs and tables, and I'm all for vintage couches, but I feel like I need to take a shower after sitting on these couches.
5. NICE, NOT FRIENDLY: While the staff is "nice" they aren't "friendly." Â I always feel sort of like I'm interrupting their conversation.
