The gyro here is boring and simple, but for only $5.00 it does the trick.
It was a store bought pita that they pulled out of the package and threw onto the flat-top to heat it up. They then proceeded to toss on some chopped up lamb meat and some slightly grilled onions and a dollop of tzatziki sauce.
Honestly, there just really wasn't anything special about it. Nothing about the place said Greek to me, and I knew that after my first bite that I would not be visiting this place again. What drew me in here in the first place is still a mystery since I have been by it hundreds of times without even the slightest inclination to enter. I should have stuck with my usual drive by. Meh....
Enjoy Suckas'!!!
I have been here a couple times. First time I had a hog dog which was fine.
I'm giving them two stars because I ordered a salad (I know a salad at a gyro place) and didn't get what I ordered the first time around. They did replace it, but. It just was not good. Also two salads and drinks should not be over $20!
I'd stay stick with the items from the grill and maybe the gyros.
Quick, decent priced food. Gyros are yummy. Hot dogs are Chicago style. Fries are good, nothing to get excited over. Last time got the chicken kabobs, was expecting typical chicken kabob sandwich and ended up with dry chicken, sour kalamata olives, salty sour feta, soggy pepperoncinis and pita bread. Didn't even come with tzatiki sauce had to ask. Ill go back but only for the hot dogs or gyros!
Review Source:Let's make this simple. It's quick, easy, cheap and good.
They have lots of things to choose from from burgers, sandwiches, chicken and hot dogs. I always lean towards the gyro. It's good, giant sized gyro. I always have to eat some of the meat with a fork first and then I can eat all together with the pita.
It's quick, easy, cheap and good.
This place is great. They have a meal special everyday, gyro's on the weekend. Adding fries and a drink to whatever special is always around $5, which is an awesome deal anywhere. Their gyro's are excellent, the service is fast. Their burgers and polishes need a little work in my opinion but if you stick to gyro's you'll love the place.
Also, one down side is that on the weekends, its like they don't clean the tables often enough for the volume they have. Its kinda a turn-off, but I feel like the prices, speed, and free refills make-up for the shortcomings. Especially considering its the best restaurant in the area. (F$*% you Chipotle)
It was a lovely Sunday afternoon and I was craving a gyro in the worst way. Â My boyfriend indulged my craving and took me to Niko's - what a menu! Â They really have a lot of different greasy food here, which allows the opportunity to please everyone you are with. Â I knew exactly what I wanted - a gyro, well done. Â No pita, extra sauce on the side. Â They took my (picky) order with no problems, no scoffing, whatever I wanted I got. Â Sunday special - $2.75 for a gyro with all the fixins! Â Someone else here mentioned that it is a Saturday special as well - while I cannot confirm that b/c I wasn't there on a Saturday, that really is a great deal. Â
Anyway - we waited a little while for our food (about 15 minutes actually). Â For "fast" food, that is slightly off-putting, but as soon as I saw & tasted the gyro I forgave them .... It really was delicious. I always order well done everywhere I go whenever I order a gyro, and I honestly think that most places don't do it. Â They took me seriously here though, and it was perfectly well done. Â Thank you Niko's. Â I will be back for your gyros. Â Oh yes, I will be back.
Not bad on the wallet either ... the beau ordered a double cheeseburger (which he enjoyed) and together with my gyro, a large fry and a regular drink (and tax) the total was about $12.
Definite yes/yum/yahoo! in my book.
First time here.....If you are in the Logan Square area, Niko's Gyros is a great lunch spot. Â I noticed a large diverse groups of people come here for lunch.
This is a very basic restaurant - Â couple of counters to order and pick up food, soda fountain, tables and good food. Â If possible, get there early to get a table. Â Take out is also available.
I had ordered the Crispy Chicken meal. Â The chicken breast sandwich was bigger than I had anticipated. Â Good amount of lettuce, tomato and mayo. Â The fries were seasoned just right. Â And of course, they had Pepsi products.
The restaurant looked relatively cleaned. Â You would often see the staff clean the tables. Â
Again, for a good lunch spot in Logan Square area, check it out.
Our office moved down the street from Niko's this summer and the scramble was on for 700 people to start looking for local establishments to frequent for lunch. Â Niko's is by far one of the favorites of myself and my coworkers. Â Their food is great, it's very inexpensive and the portions are huge. Â The restaurant is great for dining in or take-out. Â It can get busy around lunch time but that's a testament to how many repeat customers they have and not really anything against Niko's.
Some great things to try: Â Breakfast burrito with chorizo, Breakfast burrito with gyro meat, italian sausage with cheese fries and pretty much any of their daily specials.
Very glad to have such a great place to eat within walking distance of the office but I would drive to this location even if we weren't so close!
Every week I am here. Â No joke! The 1.65 cheeseburger is nothing short of fantastic.
People watching is also pretty good: we got cops, geezers, mullet heads, and much, much more. I could not give it 5 stars for two reasons: one, they are sometimes too slow to empty their 'bage, and two- sometimes they play the teenybopper radio station instead of WLS. Â The Dave Clark Five goes a lot better with cheeseburgers than Bieber- but at least they get that part right most of the time!
Friendly place...very clean. Â Pass it all the time on my way to Microcenter so I took my mom here.
She liked her sandwhich..they have these specials (gyros was one of them) and I decided to try that. Â I wasn't impressed with the gyros sauce as it seemed watery...so i ordered another one after 45 mins to see maybe if it was a bad batch...meh.
I loved the inside..photos on the wall were awesome..and it was pretty clean and it was bustling with activity. Â Was told by another customer there to try the Chicken. Â Might have to do that.
Awful service! Like many reviews said very rude& really slow. Also screwed up my order- check bag before you leave as these guys that work there don't care. This was 1st time & will be my last. To bad they have extensive menu & really good specials but if you don't have a competent staff forget about it.
The staff there should realize even if you are not mexican doesn't mean you don't understand spanish. OMG I was shocked on how they were talking about customers so loud & very very rude.
Don't bother with this place:(
Disorganized & Out of It.
My sister & I pulled off to the place with high expectations because it had a huge sign saying "Frozen Custard" on top of it.
When the menu said Niko's Diner on it & the receipt said Niko's Gyros, we should have figured out that this was going to be a little different.
I had the mint Oreo concrete to discover they didn't put the mint in it. When I asked why not, they said "Well, we were out of it."
My sister wanted to know what the "Oh Baby" concrete was (since there was no description on the menu) & they simply replied, "We're out of that too."
Skip Niko's & go somewhere where the things on the menu are able to be ordered.
This review is a bit late, but I needed to let the world know what they are not missing.
Ordered a dipped beef sandwich and the meat was extra dry and flavorless. Fries were meh. The chicken sandwich is decent. Chili Cheese Dog was eek!
How can you get fast food wrong?!
My stomach hated me at that moment.
Niko's Gyros is damn great for what it is. And what it is is a corner Greek spot to get cheap, tasty and greasy food. It does all three wonderfully.
Truth be told, I've only ever had the gyros at Niko's (and a few of its variations). But everything I've seen other people eating has looked tempting.
From chili cheese dogs overflowing with runny cheese and brownish chili sludge, to deep fried pizza puffs, to kebabs, etc.
But the best thing on the menu is the gyros. Sure, the meat could be a tad crispier, but it's still well seasoned and tender. And the sauce is great and they load you up with it (I like a lot of sauce, but if you like your gyros more dry, it could be an issue). If you get the gyros dinner, they give you meat, sauce, tomato pieces, onions, pita, a couple cubes of feta, rice, and a choice of a soup or side salad for just $7. A nice deal as far as I'm concerned, especially in this increasingly overpriced neighborhood.
So all of you yuppies who are frustrated with this place and its lack 'alternative' lifestyle, leave it be for those whose taste it is and go back to your overpriced sports bars on Milwaukee and Damen.
Gyros are pretty tasty. Â Not as good as my favorite place (Hub's), but still tasty. Â
The only thing I found strange was the placement of the garbage. The "hole" is located in the same area as the condiments, so peoples to go utensils are mingled with the stench & grossness of people's dirty trays and garbage.
Not a huge deal, but worth mentioning. Â Won't stop me from going back.
My favorite was the response to the foot long white hair in our bag of fries. "oh that's white, no one here has white hair..." for the record neither do we...
The veggie burritos were pretty good... We didn't even have to eat the hirsute fries to see (and feel) how greasy and soggy they were through the (now transparent) paper bag.
I don't do fast food but I do Niko's. It's so good, when your in a rush and have a craving for some grease action.
Everyday they have a solid special, my favorite days are Saturday and Sunday for 1.99 Gyros. The curly fries are always made perfect. The shakes are bomb (Great for a hot summer day).
Great prices, and cool staff. I've been a customer of Niko's for over 15 years. Tasty stuff!
I went into Niko's specifically for their $2.75 Gyro on Saturday and was pretty disappointed even at that price. Â They drowned my poor little sandwich in so much tzatziki sauce that I could not even taste the meat. Â I had to grab a spoon and scoop out as much as I could but it was still dripping all over the place. Â
The Gyro itself was not too crispy and there was not too much of it (of course the small portion was expected at this price). Â The pita was soggy and did not hold together well on my final bites.
I love a place that doesn't through a frozen piece of chicken on the grill. This place uses fresh, or thawd chicken on a char-broiler, very nice. Â
For a Gyro/hotdog/hamburger place they have really good daily specials.  Monday and Fridays $1.65 1/4 lb Burgers. Another day its 2 hotdogs  for cheap, then chilidog.
Parking and a drive thru, that pretty much tops most mom and pop burger joints right there.
Your typical grease joint, offering almost any type of grease your heart desires - burgers, hot dogs, burritos, italian beef, pizza puffs, maxwell polishes, and - of course - gyros. Â
The husband and I took advantage of the amazingly cheap $2.75 gyros sandwich special. The sandwiches, which came with tomatoes and onions, were pretty standard - the meat was good although I wish it were a bit more crispy, and the tsatski sauce was very runny.
We also got some onion rings, which were pretty average, and a large order of cheese fries (although we probably should have gotten a small - the large order filled a whole styrofoam takeout container!). The cheese fries were adequately covered with just the right amount of cheese, but the fries themselves were pretty thin, and too limp which ended up making them kind of mushy. Â
Overall the food was decent and I would probably come back in the future, most likely really late at night when nothing else is open (24hr drive-thru!!) but I would have to have cash with me (they don't accept credit card!)
I would also like to try their frozen custard.
EDIT: Â The night after I went here and then wrote this review, I got really, really sick. Â I'm pretty sure it was this food. :(
Ok, all I've had so far is their 2 hotdog and fries special on Wednesday. The fries were good (not cut or made any way special, they were just prepared well and tasted good). The hotdogs were just regular hotdogs and came with typical toppings like onions, mustard, pickle spear. The price was excellent, so I was definitely satisfied with what I got.
I can't give them higher than 3 stars just yet, but I know I will be back, because their daily specials are crazy good. $1.65 1/4 cheesburgers on Fridays. I believer I saw gyros on the weekends are around $2.50. I've hear both of those are good. At those prices, if they are even decent, they are worth the trip.
They have long hours and a drive-thru.
...oh wait, I fogot that my rule is to give +1 star for places that have a drive-thru in the city since it makes lunch runs so much easier. I guess this place is now shooting for a fifth star on my next visit. They best bring it.
$1.65 1/4 Cheeseburgers on Friday -- WHAT?! Â I kid you not. Â They even do drive through. Â
They also make a pretty runny/gooey chili cheese dog. Â Eh. Â
I'd say Niko's has great specials, but I don't think it's destination dining. Â Great and greasy utility eats are what these guys peddle best. Â Good values for the budget-minded. Â Do it.
There's a common misconception that vegans/vegetarians are healthy, that they eat only fresh veggies, etc. I can personally attest to the existence of the fried-food-chowing vegan.
My partner and I just HAD to have French fries after a difficult afternoon of holiday shopping. I knew Niko's was not far away, so we hurried to the drive-thru. Vegan options were quite limited. I settled for a large fries and a veggie burrito (asking for no cheese or sour cream, just in case those were standard).
The burrito wasn't imaginative. It consisted of refried beans, iceberg lettuce and a pre-made salsa, all wrapped in a flour tortilla. While not fancy, it was reasonably cheap and filled me for the time being.
The fries were nothing special either, but they were fried... I hope to find another nearby grease supplier to satisfy my cravings while providing more flavour.
What's great about this place is if you are with someone that wants a gyro, and you have no desire for a gyro or any other junk food, you can just drive thru. This saves you and the other person from any awkwardness that can sometimes arise when one person is eating and the other person isn't. I don't often feel weird about that but some people do. So the health nut can get in the drivers seat and the gyro eater can enjoy the gyro and the ride in the passengers seat.
Don't drive while eating this gyro. Its very drippy. I took a bite because I'm the type of vegetarian angel that will make a sacrifice for the greater good of Yelp. The meat was too thick, and I bit some gristle! Definitely not the type of gyro you want to give up your born again veg-inity for.
However, $2.75 on the weekends for a very large sandwich. And again, drive thru, I can't think of a single other drive-thru gyro. Service was super friendly.
Nice big bright counter joint; we stopped in because of the huge sign advertising Gyros Special, just $2.75 on weekends! Â Because of that, we got a nice lunch for a decent price; otherwise, it would be a bit spendy for fast food.
The gyros were nothing special, but they were plenty good. Â The fries were okay. Â They had a nice huge menu and very long hours, so this place is worth remembering. Â It would be a great after-drinking place (as long as someone else is driving, of course).
If I knew that I would never again be kissed, I would immediately (after I got done crying) head to my nearest gyro joint and order them every single day thereafter. I don't care what they do to anyone's breath, gyros are some of my favorite foods.
Living down the street from Niko's for over two years I have been meaning to try it all that time - today was the day, while out on a walk. One gyro single to go, no onions and sauce on the side was just over five bucks. The service wasn't lightening quick, but that's ok.
The gyros were though, by the time I walked them home, a little dry. It's entirely possible that if I'd have eaten them right there they may have been a little better but they were still good. The tomatoes on them were downright sad, however. Niko, we're in tomato season. Why were my tomatoes resembling December fruits? Fix that, man.
Prices seemed pretty decent. Had I gotten fries and a drink with my gyros, it would have topped $7. I spied a very thin burger on the griddle - double up if you're getting one of those. They have carry out, drive through and dine in (no delivery - fooey!). They're open 24 hours too, Betty Ford.
Ok lets get down to it. This is a place where you get LOTS of food at a decent price AND it has its own parking lot. That is worthy of a star right there.
I honestly dont know why I like Niko's. I shouldn't. It's not that great. But everytime I go to that damn Target I get a sick craving for the pounds of meat they deliver for so cheap.
The gyro is pretty tasty, but cant comment on the other menu items. I'm not that adventurous yet. I would say that this is NOT a date place, and only somewhere you should go with your closest of friends. You will eat like a slob, have grease running down your face, and tzatziki all over your hands. All in perfect gyro bliss. You can also score HUGE chunks of feta for an extra $1, which I highly recommend. It just makes it messier, which is better.
The bummer is that it is cash only. They do have an ATM on site but the service fee of $2.50 is like half the price of the meal. That doesn't sit well with me.
I am sure the folks in Greektown cringe when they drive by Niko's, but when you need your gyro fill, check it out. Its not the best by any means, but you will leave full and needing a shower! I also think they are open very late (maybe even 24 hours) and have a drive-thru. Obesity = Niko's drive-thru.
I've been driving past this place for the past year, and finally decided to stop in Friday evening. Â It wasn't very busy, I ordered the gyro meal with fries and a drink for $7. Â Pretty decent price. Â They only take cash, so that's kind of a downer, but I had the cash so it's all good for me. Â
A lot of people on here have said the gyros are bad, I must have come in on a good day as I thought it was great. Â The fries were pretty good as well. Â I also liked that there was a parking lot. Â All in all, it was what I expected it to be and I'm sure I'll be back.
Reasonably priced fast food option open late (til 11 pm dining room and 24 hr drive-thru). Â Niko's has an extensive and I mean EXTENSIVE (at least 20) list of meal specials, which include fries and a drink. Â Hot dogs and gyros here are meh, if I want a decent gyro I'll go to Big Boy Gyros but we don't come to Niko's for that, we come here for the chicken! Â Delish-ous chicken dishes such as the kebab plate with onions, tomato and pepper, feta cheese and black olives on the side *homer drool* and rice with a yummy tomato sauce on top. Â Greek chicken is also available and is very good, not too salty. Â But get this...they got BROASTED CHICKEN an option I don't see at too many fast food places *maaaaaaaaaasive homer drool*!!!
So Niko's fufills my requirements for a quick meal - cheap, tasty and open late!
Now and then I like a "good" gyros. It's the opposite of Chinese food, often I can't finish the whole thing and it takes awhile to digest.
I totally agree with what Robert L. wrote. I too liked the place better before they remodeled. Before, it seemed more like a neighborhood
place, where you could sit down in a real booth. The guys that worked there ( including, I think, the owner) were friendly, but not annoyingly so. They also used to have a Greek chicken plate, that I'd often get.
When I tried the new version, didn't taste near as good. Doubt I'll go back there again...just isn't the same
If you want a solid gyro at any hour of the day, this place cannot be beat. Â $4-6 for a gyro. Â It's not gourmet, but it beats the hell out of other fast food options because:
- it does not wreak havoc in your belly
- and my guess is that it has less than the 1800 mg of sodium in a BK Quad Stacker
