Best sangwich in town. Period.
Yes, it's a bold statement, but I think NYM's lives up to the hype by: (a) preparing all their own dressings/sauces, (b) roasting their own meats in house, (c) TAST(E)ing good, and (d) agreeing to place the contents of your sandwich inside of bread, wrap, lettuce wrap, or on top of a salad. As an added bonus, the proprietors participate in Lane County's RE: think program which, although not zero waste, promotes effective recycling, water saving, etc., and claim that they have no microwaves, freezers, or fryers on the premises!
NYM's is a small joint, but they manage to squeeze in a few tables and, if it's a nice day out, there are spots outside, too. They don't sneeze at you for ordering to-go, and waste is minimal when you do.
The sandwiches are HUGE. Tanaz P. has it right in the ode to the sweaty Italian. The Skinny-ish Italian (sub roast turkey for pepperoni) is fantastic, too, as is the TnT (Turkey n Tomato) and the Margherita. If you need accompaniments to your HUGE main, they sell those really great Zapp's chips and make cookie bars. MMMmmmmmm. Cookie bars.
Great lunch place in DTE!
I have yet to be disappointed with the quality of the sandwiches here. And if you time it correctly, you will always have a place to sit and enjoy a fresh made specialty sandwich. Add to that the price is well within the normal range and you have yourself a great combination. I would have to admit though, the parking sucks, especially on a not so nice day, or when it is busy.
Review Source:You just have to chuckle & stop by a place like this right?
When the price is right (say $6.50) and your belly is putting up an argument you know you'll never win, head on over to this teeny tiny sandwich shop to get your fill.
Oh yes, another Yelp find, we headed here during our roadtrip this year on our brief tour of Eugene.
At lunch time, the place is packed. And we're not talking just with students either. Stay at home moms, college faculty, students & the random roadtrippers (us) squeezed in here to snag a scrumptious sammie.
Everything was super fresh and made-to-order while we squeezed ourselves in a side table.
After a short wait - our sandwiches arrived and our bellies were quiet. I highly recommend the Sweaty Italian if your stomach is really talking back.
The only thing negative about this experience was even after a short sit inside the place while we waited for our sammies & quickly scarfed down each bit in a frenzy, we left reeking of panini/cafe. You know the smell... Sadly it doesn't go away for hours!
I stopped in on Tuesday, the cuban was fantastic. For me the real pleasure was getting to know the owners, who are slanging the meat and working behind the counter. Really good people who care about the food they are serving. I am a fan of any place that puts a premium on the word "scratch" and NYMSS lives it.
They serve a few beers that are worth trying, if you are a hop head like most folks in Eugene seem to be, that will help you wash the sandwich down. Â Do not be afraid to ask questions, they seem to know their beers and what sandwiches will go well with each one.
This is a slam dunk, no meal regret, kinda of place. have i mentioned they are pretty cheap too?
Its a little off the beaten path, but well worth hunting it out.
This place is great, the service is prompt and friendly, and the good is superb. I recommend their potato salad or soups, as well as most of the sandwiches on the menu..
The only real drawback is showing up during the lunch rush when it's crowded, the shop is small so there's pretty limited seating.
I was a return customer - but will not be going back. I had the chilli all three times that I was there, The first time it was good and I let them know. The  second time it was fine. The  third time the  beans were hard and not nearly cooked. I spoke to the cook who said that the beans were fine and it was me! He did not bather to try the  food. I could not eat it. In leaving I mentioned the uncooked beans again to the front person who also was not interested in making it right or trying the food herself.. She just said " I'll have someone check it out."  Clearly no care for their customer or the  quality of  their food.
Review Source:Had the NYM club sandwich for $8. My first impression was that it was small for an $8 sandwich however, I thought if it tastes great who cares. The sandwich was not good. It was kind of plain tasting. The meats had no flavor and the fried egg was all I could taste. The sandwich was also very dry. I will not be returning.
Review Source:I knew I was going to like this place as soon as I stepped to the counter. Granted, the "sandwich shop" is not something Eugene necessarily excels in - but we are definitely getting better thanks to places like Devour and Wich House - and definitely now Not Your Mom's. Different than the deli/Italian deli - the sandwich shop offers the ability for some  creative license w the sandwich but must be your primary focus.
So "Not your Mom's" is a little gem - smallish, but cool looking inside. The owner is a super cutie! :) - very friendly, knowledgable, up beat, engaging. And the staff seem similarly engaged and into the place. It makes you want to frequent the place.
Food wise: They roast all their meats in house, make all their sauces and pickles/condiments in house, and I can't verify where the bread comes from but both breads I've tried were excellent and the perfect vessel. The sandwich choices are creative and many - its a good menu when you want to try almost every sandwich offering and have a hard time making decisions. True to the best sandwich shop etiquette, several of their sandwiches are made better with bacon...and the occasional egg! Â I come from the vantage that the Croque Madame/Monsieur (Mike & Patty's in Boston!!) is the highest form of sandwich art - but NYM helps me stray because of choices. I've had the pulled pork and apple; as well as the NYM club (bacon and egg!). Both were excellent. Tasty, quality ingedients, and good, fair size. i've heard the soups are good; the mushroom soup was bomb - earthy and cleanly mushroom; but it's the only one ive tried. Im guessing others will be good as well. Cant wait to go back and try something new. Keep it poppin. :)
I'm feeling a little lazy so here's another simple (but hopefully efficient) pros/cons list for this new Eugene sandwich shop.
Pros:
- Yummy sandwiches!!
- Lots of ingredients/sauces etc made in house!
- Lot of variety, which includes innovative combinations. For example: The Apple/Pork with caramel-mustard glaze/cheddar sandwich.
- Loved my grilled cheese: Cheddar, fresh, soft mozzarella, and bread crusted with parmesan. It was gooey, melty, and still salty/cheesy thanks to the parmesan on the outside.
- Incredibly friendly service (Takes a bit of patience to deal with me. I take forever to decide and invariably want a million modifications. I'm that person who goes: "I'll have the BLT, but can I have salami instead of bacon, spinach instead of lettuce, and cheddar instead of tomato?")
- Good price-quantity-quality ratio
- Free WiFi, and it's actually FAST, unlike most places! That's a major plus for me. All they need now is some armchairs, and I'd never leave again.
Cons:
- Sandwiches aren't huge (though fair for the price and good quality!)
- They have cool combinations, but I did have that "I can make this at home on my sandwich press just as easily"-feeling.
- Weird location. The place was packed for lunch, but I have no idea how on earth people found this place. I heard about it via coupon, but I've never in 12 years in Eugene driven down that road, and I've been pretty much everywhere else in town.
Overall: My mother-in-law and I loved our sandwiches, we loved using the WiFi (yay liveauctioneers, even better entertainment than angry birds), and we would definitely come back. We'll recommend this place to others too.
PS: Ask the counter guy about his tattoo, I simply had to, after reading James' review lol. Oh, and James: I agree, WHY NO EGG SALAD?
Always in the pursuit of good food, my wife had spotted this new sandwich shop off the beaten path and said she had heard good things about it. Â The husband and wife team have put together an extensive offering of unique sandwiches, all sounding so good it was difficult to decided, we asked their advice and just went with the suggestions. Â Their menu is online so check it out, there is limited seating so your only option may be take it to go, but you will be happy with your food. Â It's going to be fun to try the various offerings, hope to see you there.
Review Source:Husband and I found this place on Yelp as we were stopping in Eugene on our way to Grants Pass. Â It was in an odd location and we couldn't figure exactly where to park, not being at all familiar with the area. Â But the nice people at the wholesale place next door said we could park there when we stopped to ask where we could park.
Husband got a turkey sammich with all the trimmings, and I ordered the pork and apple one. Â Both were fantastic. Â Everyone working at the shop was very friendly and the place was clean as could be.
We were fortunate that we missed the lunch crowd; the only comfortable (to us) seating was at a table meant for about 4-5 people, but we could sit there because it was pretty quiet. Â The other seating was metal stools, which would've killed us. Â The place is pretty small, so I imagine there must be a lot of take-out orders.
The ceiling was fun and funky, with old LP album covers dangling from the ceiling of all kinds of old bands. Â
If our sandwiches were any indication of the yumminess of all the others, then I can't imagine anything not tasting good. Â I love that all the meats are roasted there... no junk deli stuff to be found. Â All the ingredients were fresh as could be. Â Definitely worth getting a sammich here!
Yeah, we all know it's a pretty odd location to have a sandwich shop. But hey, it's all about the food, right? And it's a world's away from Subway (hate Subway).
I'd have to say the portion sizes for the sandwiches are quite small, but nevertheless, they're tasty and you can tell it's good quality. Yum. I'm just a fan of good ingredients. I had the buffalo chicken sandwich and my friend got a made-to-order sandwich with a bunch of things.
In a nutshell: We both enjoyed eating our sandwiches, even though it was gone in a few bites.
Don't you just love it when something you've been wanting to try turns out to be a great find? For sandwich lovers, NYMSS delivers a quality product.
NYMSS does happen to remind me of sandwiches one would find made by your mother; if your mother liked to cook. Â And has a kitchen stocked with a mess of killer ingredients. And maybe gets the occasional munchies. The signature sandwiches are tasty, varied, and well executed. They aren't huge by today's standards, but certainly make a decent sized and affordable lunch for moderate appetites.
Read the menu carefully; some sandwiches have familiar sounding names and might include an ingredient that you aren't expecting (case in point: the addition of pineapple in the sweaty Italian grinder). Happily; they are more than willing to make substitutions.
Other likes: their assortment of homemade and or oven roasted proteins, condiments and soups, use of local and o.g. purveyors when available, freshly cut veg, and the options to have your sandwich cold, pressed, melted, or toasted (!).
Bottom line: homemade sandwich snobs should definitely give this a try. Those who prefer their sandwiches measured in inches and loaded with generic meats and veg might be disappointed.
I ventured out of the office downtown Eugene today to see if I could find something new, unique, and yummy to eat. The usual haunts directly downtown aren't so great anymore, and I needed to find a new place to get excited about going to for lunch. I had read previous Yelp reviews about this place, and even drove by one time so I can find out where it was located as I was headed to REI one day, and spotted it.
Their menu is located online (thank you - I appreciate knowing prices and what choices are on the menu before I go to a place), so I scoured it prior to leaving the office on my walk to get lunch.
A couple noteable, and UNIQUE, sandwiches are on their menu, namely, the cucumber wrap (all vegitarian, and AMAZING), and their turkey & cranberry sandwich (LOVE these, this is my next sandwich I am going to try here). Also, they have a lot of hot sandwich options. Soup & espresso are also served.
There are 4 tables that seat 4 inside. Not a place I would go to eat in (I'm a take-out kind of person during the lunch hour), but you certainly can if you want to - it it very nice inside.
I'll be back for sure! This is my new favorite lunch spot in Eugene!
I don't know what a sandwich shop is doing on Shelton McMurphy Boulevard, but I'm glad they're here.
They'll build you a large sandwich, Â typically for $6.50. Â They oddly don't offer egg salad (one of my favorites), but do make most any other thing you could want on a sandwich, from traditional meats and cheeses to things like roasted eggplant, meatloaf and curried chicken salad.
They slice the meats, cheeses and veggies to order. Â I ordered an Italian sub and the guy grilled the bread, broiled it after adding meats & cheese and then topped it with veggies sauteed in a pan. Â The guy was making love to my sandwich.
These truly are homemade sandwiches. Â Glance at the back of the menu, and you'll see that they make many things from scratch - hummus, the dressings, the meatloaf, horseradish sauce, cranberry chutney and (yum!) pickles.
Fun fact:
There's a friendly guy behind the counter, his arms covered with tattoos. Â I was *convinced* that the red one on his elbow was a representation of Jack Black-as-Christ. Â Thank god, I was wrong.
New sandwich place tucked back off of Shelton McMurphy in the Hummingbird Wholesale building. Â It's been open for about a month despite the ongoing construction. Â
First thing, they've got a really cool space carved out in there. Â Apparently the (friendly) husband and wife team designed it from the ground up. Â Feels warm and comfortable with some industrial-ish accents. Â Not a lot of seating space. Â It smells good. Â Or maybe the cookies smell good. Â Whichever.
The menu has a couple of dozen sandwich options between $4 and $8. Â They've got espresso drinks, soups, cookies, and so on, like one would expect from a shop geared towards the lunch crowd.
The sandwich I got was made-to-order and mouth-watering-tasty; though not 5-star spectacular (size or value-wise). Â Meat was very good - read something on their menu that they do their own roasting in-house. Or maybe it was slicing. Â Or both. Â Cool. Â I had a coffee and homemade cookie too; really hit the spot on a rainy morning. Â The only gripe I might have is that for $10 or so I was still a little hungry when I left.
I'll come back here and try a few more things and update accordingly.
