Stay away, especially if you want gluten free food!

We went there to celebrate my birthday. I picked this place because their menu online was labeled with gluten free items. I "assumed" the establishment was knowledgeable about the potential harms of gluten for some people. When we arrived at the restaurant, the waitress was less than helpful. I told her that I needed my food to be gluten free. When I asked if they had gluten free beer, she answered, "I have no idea, can't you have something else?" After hearing the annoyance in the waitress's voice, my daughter replied today is my mom's birthday. Then I asked about gf items on the menu that the waitress was unable to answer nor did she offer to check. So I decided I better play it safe here and go with a GLUTEN FREE salad.

After waiting some time, we finally got our food. I received my salad and took a bite. It was a crouton! I motion the waitress over and ask her to take it back. Her first comment in annoyance, was that they have been serving this dish for awhile and no one has ever complained about croutons not being gluten free! Then the manager came over to apologize but provided the same excuse. Obviously, she does not understand what gluten free means! Needless to say, it was not a very happy birthday night.

On a side note, one of the other people in my party who is not gluten free, ordered the prosciutto covered chicken. He said it was so dry that he needed a steak knife to carve into it.
Stay away!

Painters has really upped their game. Tavern food at its best. Wine by the glass selections are well matched to the entrees. The food is much better than previous years and is consistently good across the board. A roaring fire in Winter, outdoor cafe seating in Summer, lively bar scene year-round ... in the heart of the village. Good times.

Food is VERY good. We had their amazing duck egg rolls. Our dinners were delicious, as well. Service was very good. Got to chatting with our waitress who was very sweet and attentive. The inside of the restaurant needs a bit of a face lift and a better way to display the beautiful painters they have distributed all over.

This place is neat- original art work, (unfinished) murals painted on the walls, yard sale looking decos ALL over the place, comfortable enough beds and bathrooms in each room.

We were there for a birthday adventure and had a private room for a party.

The food was good, the shower pressure was super, the staff was helpful and friendly. I also like a place I can get up and make my own coffee (Oscar was there to show me where it was) in the morning.

BUT. REALLY, really thin walls. REALLY.

Walls so thin I could hear the woman sobbing next door. Literally sobbing. It was clearly a man and a woman having a conversation/discussion/argument- I could hear it all. And she was sobbing. After about 45 minutes of the waterworks (and what seriously sounded like ugly-cry-face tears) I rapped on the wall twice and it settled down. Poor lady.

Otherwise- the place was a thumbs up.

...but bring your ear plugs.

We went for the champagne brunch. We got the eggs benedict and the tofu scramble. The tofu scramble doesn't come with eggs (it is marked as Vegan on the menu!) but was quite delicious, it had a different flavor than I was expecting, a bit on the sweeter side and the vegetables and tofu were tender and seemed fresh. The eggs benedict were quite delicious, not extraordinary, but quite delicious with some nice and tender ham, well poached eggs, and some delicious hollandaise sauce. I would certainly pick that again. Both sides were the painter's potatoes and were probably some of the best breakfast potatoes I have ever had: crispy on the outside and mushy on the inside. The menu did have some good other choices with some seasonal takes on pancakes and stuffed french toast as well as a few other slightly spun breakfast staples.

The Service was good and friendly, which has definitely suffered from a lack of attentiveness in the past. The coffee was nothing to write home about, but was light and drinkable. The meal also comes with a mimosa or one of a few other typical breakfast beverages that I forget. The mimosas were a delightful compliment to the breakfast.

Despite being fall and a bit chilly, the front patio was open and has a great view of the [sleepy] action that is happening on the main street through town.

It'd be great if Painter's could personalize their menu even further and give it a more unique touch, but I would definitely come again in the future.

Revising my review on Painters...My last couple of visits were just ok. Still a good menu with good specials, but just good. Not great.

We just returned from Cornwall. We went to Storm King, and as we've done over the past 15 years, headed to Painter's directly afterwards for their pile of nachos/veggies/cheeses/spices on a wooden plank. This year we were marking a year since my father passed away. He loved Painter's.. loved Cornwall. We almost moved into the bike shop on the main street when it was being sold back in the day.

Upon entering and noting that we are a party of 7 and would like to sit on the all but empty front porch, we were told that they "no longer slide tables together". We could sit out there, but would have to sit at different tables. What ensued was a ludicrous - ludicrous scene. Three hostesses and the manager all took a turn at turning our shock and disappointment against us in a passive aggressive, bordering on aggressive-defensive wave of negativity and stubbornness. The bottom line is that they were unwilling to let us sit out front together. It's simply their 'policy' not to move tables anymore. (We weren't allowed to move them ourselves). It smelled quite damp and musty inside.

We didn't stay. I'll savor the good memories I've had here, but the food last time tasted old, and they've now lost us all as patrons. I'm really sad about this. This was a favorite place of mine. In this recession, it's just shocking that a place as wonderful as this could treat their customers with such brazen indifference and a complete lack of compassion or flexibility.

What a delightful dining spot! We came here on a late Saturday morning expecting brunch but nobody cared that they don't have brunch except on Sundays once our food came. I got the black bean cakes for an appetizer. They were wonderfully seasoned, with a nice cornmeal crust. Then came the main course. The waitress suggested ordering the half-salad, and I was glad I did...it was plenty big for my lunch. I got the Crispy Calamari salad. The salad had a southwestern flavor, enhanced with perfectly ripe avocados and tomatoes, topped with some of the best calamari I've ever had. We were eating on the porch, and i decided to wander inside. The dining room and bar are delightful, decorated in a funky style that will make any aging hippie or wild child happy. Local art hangs on the walls. But best of all is the ladies' bathroom (although, to be fair, I did not see then mens'!) the walls are covered with floor to ceiling hand painted flowers.

Went here for a work function and we were dining off a fixed menu of various sandwiches. Me being a carnivore there wasn't much option for me since everything was pre-made and slathered with veggies. I ended up eating a few grilled chicken sandwiches that were prepared on a really tasty baguette type bread with bacon and ranch.

Decent beer selection, they had half a dozen or so good micro's imports on tap. I went with a Franziskaner Hefe-Weiss which was served in an authentic Hefe glass (nice touch) I'd probably come back and give this place another shot. I'd also update my review once I have a chance to order off the menu.

I had been going here for years and it was always quite good. The last two times it has been horrible. My recent visit I ordered their "Delicious Lemonade"-not so much on the delicious side-tasted like a glass of water with a lemon squeezed in it....on to lunch...I ordered the Painters version of Chicken Parm-looked interesting, tasted horrible. The sauce was supposed to be a sun-dried tomato cream sauce-it was watery and tasteless, in fact it was so watery the pasta couldn't hold the sauce...I sent it back and received an attitude from the server. She said: "Well everyone else really likes it." First of all, if your customers like that dish you could probably serve them Alpo and they wouldn't know the difference. Secondly, just take it off my check, apologize for the horrible preparation of said dish and save your commentary. The waitress was as bad as the meal itself. It really pains me to write this because I really used to like this place...Painter's owner, I hope you read this and get a new chef and wait staff-I noticed when I was there how empty you were...sad...

My husband and I stopped to have lunch here today. I can't really speak to the inside of the place because I didn't see it. We stepped in, the hostess asked where we wanted to sit, we chose outside and out we went. The staff was nice.

I had the turkey and swiss panini and thought it was pretty good. The panini bread was crispy and thin. Pretty good. I feel that the cole slaw could have been more flavorful, but I'm not complaining. Most sandwiches come with potato chips, not fries. My husband had the steak sandwich and really enjoyed it. The drink selection is incredible.

Consistently a great place to go. Whether you're looking for some funky food, or a great drink Painter's will have it.

The bar is one of the best around, having a very nice selection of beer and various liquors many places don't have. They rotate their tap beers regularly so chances are you'll be able to try something new every time you visit.

The food is quite good. Generally I'll order the same things, steak sandwich, nachos or some pizza. All are very good and I've tried most of the other items on the menu, also equally tasty. Great calamari!

On an early Friday night, or around any holiday this place is very busy and there is a great crowd. Painters is sure to please.

Whenever I'm up visiting friends in New Windsor, NY this is invariably the place we head to if we're eating out. I've sat in both the bar area and the more formal restaurant area. They have a great selection on the menu, from pub fare to more sophisticated entrees. Oh, and they will substitute 100% whole wheat pasta in any of their pasta dishes! Seriously, how many places will do that or even have that as an option on their menu?! They get major points just for that. If you're into beer, they've got a great selection of that too. Really cozy place. Don't miss if you're in Cornwall.

Really enjoyed our first meal experience at Painter's Tavern this past Friday evening for dinner. I have lived nearby for several years but had never heard of this place. When I had driven by in the past I thought it was simply a bed & breakfast or art store. Little did I know that I would be entering a bustling and friendly hot spot for great food and great service. Everywhere you looked there were tables filled with happy diners. My wife and I were impressed with the wide selection of appetizers, entrees, AND beers to chose from! Overall, I would definitely recommend this place. We look forward to future returns.

One of the best restaurants in the area IMO. Since I'm 'only' giving it a 4 you can tell what my opinion of food in this area is. That said, Painters has a seasonally changing and highly inventive menu with some great offerings. There warm goat cheese and spinach salad is AWE-SOME. Likewise to their sweet potato fries which are among the best I've ever had....they stay crispy even as they cool. They offer a variety of traditional American fare made with local ingredients and typically served up with a little twist. The staff is super friendly and the interior is rustic and homely.

The aviance was truly historic with beautiful fall leaves in the driveway. We we're greeted warmly and our party of 6 was seated immediately event though they where very busy. It took a liitle while to be serve, but it gave us time to go thru their lengthly menu of beer and food. I really liked that almost everything was available in half portions ( which were still a nice portion) so if you were not starving you still could enjoy the fare.
Food was good, but not always exactly as discribes on the menu. Slightly diappointing. But I would still go back! and bring my friend and family.

Painter's is a fantastic place for great food and drink. The regular menu is available on line and they have specials that change every two weeks. It had the best calamari ever, they have great salads, sandwiches and the best thing about it is that they have a ton of vegeterian items, wheat-free, gluten free as well. They buy locally so you know its good and fresh. The bar is great and I do have my favorite bartenders. Its kid friendly as well. Its my favorite Cornwall restaurant. Its an inn as well, apartment too - I could never live there, I'd be a 300 pound alcoholic for sure :)

We eat there at least once a month. Great food. Great service. Laid back atmosphere. They offer "splits" on most of the stuff on the menu, so it's great for ordering tons of food and sharing. Food is always yummy, drinks all come quick, and specials are new and interesting. The warm goat cheese salad is amazing, as is most of the menu. Highly recommend.

Used to go here a lot, but in the last two years or so, the quality has gone downhill. I think they had an ownership change, and it seems they're cutting costs and corners now, to the restaurant's detriment.

The food used to be great, but it's steadily lost quality. I had the cheesesteak melt, and while it tasted ok, it was obvious it had been sitting in the kitchen for a good while. The cheese had hardened up and it was room temperature, not hot (or even warm). Had the steak sandwich a few months ago and it was mediocre with a complete lack of flavor.

The service is painstakingly slow and just gets worse every time. I'm not asking to be rushed, but it's usually a long time waiting for anything. Last time I went, they brought the bread to the table AFTER the main course.

Painter's does have one of the best drink selections in the area though.

Add Painter's Tavern to the unfortunately ever increasing list of places that I used to frequent quite a bit but will not anymore. Today we hopped on the bike for a jaunty cross River for brunch.

My Primavera Omelette was very disappointing. The few veggies that were in it were previously frozen and warmed up and thrown without a thought into a flipped over rubbery omelette. No interest in incorporating the ingredients and I do not understand why in July they do not have fresh produce to utilise. There was no discernible seasoning and it was rather greasy. Just a few little things would have made all the difference in the world. The potatoes were not freshly made either. As for the primavera part, they had asparagus chunks, thickly julienned carrots, chunks of cauliflower... Very strange. Not what I would expect for a traditional primavera. I could not even finish it. It seemed as if the veggies were even leftover from the previous night's service or at least could have been they were so tasteless. And the orange juice was not freshly pressed either. And The L's Huevos Rancheros was the same story and he said that the beans tasted straight from the can. Ye gads!

Little details perhaps to some but to me it is the difference between showing you have passion about your food and restaurant and looking to cut corners for a quick buck.

The only highlight of our experience was our very nice waiter and the nice front patio overlooking their modest sculpture garden and the walls full of local artists work for sale. 2.5 stars. And we won't be going back.

Had lunch here the other day and ordered the veggie focaccia. It was a large portion and quite tasty, although it was cold by the time I finished it and you have no idea how fast I can eat!
The place has a neat atmosphere with old wooden floors and a unique look and feel. Outside seating is also available. The service was good, even though the waitress spilled a drink on my pants.
It was not cheap though. The tab for 3 of us at lunch was $55 before tip.
Cornwall looks like a cool town to investigate.

Painter's is very eclectic-- from the menu to the servers and even to the space itself. I had a warm goat cheese salad that came with mandarin oranges and almonds-- perfect combination of flavors-- and a side of fries. C couldn't decide what he wanted, so he had a half order of their pulled pork and sweet potato fries, and a half order of Isabella's Shells-- the half orders are ENORMOUS and both were great. Isabella's shells came with crumbled sausage and a pink sauce. Our only disappointment was the nachos, which came with run of the mill supermarket chips and so-so guac, but it was forgivable after we got our entrees. They were having a beer sale (my kind of sale!) so C's beers were only $2 each!

The chairs were a little uncomfortable, and we kind of giggled at the paintings displayed, which were on sale for upwards of $600 and looked like my seminal 1st grade work. Colorful and fun, though.

Painter's is a great little find in the quiet town of Cornwall on Hudson (not to be confused with Cornwall about 1 mile down the road).

It's got a small inn combined with a great restaurant in this quaint town near West Point. Check out their website at http://www.painters-rest…

When you walk in, you'll see a dining are to your left, a bar area (for private parties) to your right, and the main bar and another dining area straight ahead, past the staircase. Sit at the bar - have a drink...

The drink selections at Painter's are nothing short of impressive for a rather small establishment. Lots of beer on tap, and the wine and hard liquor selection can be daunting at times. Ask the bartender for a suggestion - he or she will be happy to oblige.

When it's time to eat, the food selection is quite good, and I've yet to have a meal that I (or anyone else I was with) did not enjoy.

Breakfasts are particularly good, too, on Saturday or Sunday. Between 10:30 and 3:00 you'll get a complimentary glass of champagne or mimosa, too!

All kinds of people frequent the place - as Andrea D. said, Hell's Angels next to frat boys. There are bikers who like to head of for a good meal on a weekend (I am one of them, though my BMW bike is a little different than a Hell's Angel type), and they find Painter's. West Point cadet family members, other visitors, and just regular folks who want a good meal and good atmosphere.

If you plan to stay at the Inn, make reservations well in advance. The place fills up fast, particularly when events are occurring at West Point. I have it on good authority (though not my own) that the rooms are quite nice.

Sweet little inn and tavern. They are kid friendly, group friendly and the space feels all historical (sort of old New York state ghosty). You'll find frat boys tabled next to Hell's Angels.
