I recently visited The Palace and was pleased with the restaurant in all areas. We were immediately seated anywhere we liked. The decor and music was appropriate and gave The Palace an inviting atmosphere. My Garlic Chicken was great; the white meat chicken was tender and flavorful, the sauce was slightly spicy, and not too greasy, the vegetables were fresh and crisp. Our waiter was attentive and we were served quickly. The prices were reasonable as well. Will definitely return again.
Review Source:Wanted to spend a evening in doors in front of the catch eating, rejoicing and watching Purge. We we're so hungz we ordered:
*CRAB RANGOON
*VEGETARIAN CHOW MEIN
*KUNG PAO SHRIMP
*BLACK PEPPER BEEF
*TANGERINE CHICKEN
Total was about $80 we got it delivered, with tip n all about $90
Definitely worth it! So yummy. A++++ Quality food!
Having just moved back to Silverlake - I've been on the lookout for a solid Chinese restaurant that I can feel confident in coming back to. Â Having visited the Palace, I'm confident that I'll be coming back here again.
I ordered the Mongolian Beef, and my friend ordered the Chicken in Garlic Sauce. Â We also had Foil Wrapped Chicken as an appetizer. Â The entrees came out before the appetizer, but everything tasted good, didn't seem overly greasy, and the service was attentive.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice, and the seating is fairly spacious. Â Albeit not the most inexpensive Chinese restaurant in the area, I'm ok with spending a few extra bucks to ensure i'm going to enjoy my meal.
When my girlfriend and I went, we were the only Asian people in the whole restaurant (and it's a big restaurant). Â So that tells you something. Â If you like "non-traditional" Chinese food (to use a euphemism), this is the place for you. Â Don't get me wrong, I like "non-traditional" Chinese food as much as the next guy, but something about the Palace didn't hit the spot.
Good things, though? Portions are HUGE. Â Good deal.
Loved this place!
I ordered the tangerine chicken with brown rice and a bowl of sizzling rice soup. Â Both were delicious. Â The chicken was actually high quality breast meat, which is hard to find at many Chinese places.
Very nice atmosphere and excellent server. Â He was attentive and friendly. Â
I got charged $1.50 for ordering the brown rice, which apparently is an upcharge? Â So I subtracted a star.
My wife and I recently moved back to Culver City after a couple of years in Koreatown. Almost everything is better - our home is nicer, the area is nicer - but the one thing we miss the most is The Palace. We simply haven't been able to find Chinese food that we like anywhere near as much on the west side.
We'd go there every week or two, and were definitely regular enough that the owner knew who we were and even brought us free dessert when we took my wife's family to the restaurant while they were visiting.
We would particularly recommend the cashew nut chicken and the moo shu beef. Also, the sauce they give you with pot stickers is beyond delicious. We really wish they'd bottle it and sell it.
Food is super bland, no flavor at all. We ordered in and were sadly disappointed. I ordered Kung Pao Tofu, the sauce was not hot at all and tasted store bought, my husband had the sesame chicken and it was awful. Super sad that this place sucks cause we can't find good Chinese food takeout anywhere.
Review Source:My boyfriend and I have come to consider this restaurant one of "our" places. Â We always order the wonton soup -- I think it is one of the best in the city. Â We've ordered maybe a dozen dishes so far and have loved them all. Â I can't believe the prices are as good as they are. Â The food quality is outstanding. We've eaten in, had take out, ordered delivery, and the service has always been top notch.
Review Source:Liked the decor and the lady playing the Guqin but the food was lackluster and the service was poor.
Service: Â It took 20 minutes to place an order after I finally waved down a server (i hate having to do that) and had a similar situation when it came to getting the check
Food: Par for the course. Â The kung pao chicken was pretty bland. Â The BBQ pork with vegetables was just ok. Â Can get much better food at a hole-in-the-wall Chinese at a fairer price.
I came from San Francisco with my family to visit my boyfriend in Los Angeles. Short on time and not familiar with Los Angeles restaurants, I decided to choose this place to bring my parents and boyfriend.
Worst dining experience ever. Worse than any cheap greasy take out place too. I mean, I've had bad dining experiences before, and even then, I have not resorted to writing negative reviews on Yelp, but wow, this was bad.
We came in for dinner on a Sunday night.
POSITIVES:
-Free parking right outside the restaurant.
-Pretty interior.
-Friendly staff
NEGATIVES:
-Menu has NO CHINESE in it whatsoever. Authenticity highly questionable. Coming from a person who has eaten at countless Chinese restaurants...this is a very "white washed" menu.
-Menu barely offers any choices. It is 1/4 to 1/3rd of what a typical Chinese restaurant offers.
-NO LIVE SEAFOOD. FROZEN fish.
We came here and only ordered the standard tea and soup. Soup is $3.50 a bowl. Yes, a bowl. A bowl the size of a typically Asian rice bowl (i.e. tiny). After great struggling with this menu with a tiny variety and horrible pricing, we decided to leave after just the soup. (To us, doing this is UNTHINKABLE, but in this case, we were so happy that we did). There were also other ridiculous things on the menu (e.g. it costs $1.00 for a tiny bowl of rice--think of an individual tiny bowl of rice)
So yes. We ordered only soup and tea. And it cost us over $23. This was the cheap type of soup too (corn and chicken soup). Not that the number matters all that much; we have been to more expensive restaurants before, but this was the worst spent money on food. ****Ever*****
Our guilt made us pay over 30% in tip to make up for leaving after the soup.
I cried in the restaurant when I realized the horrible mistake that I had made. I apologized multiple times to my family and boyfriend for bringing them to this horrible place.
Seriously. Do not come here.Sorry but, just no.
Decent food. Possibly my new Chinese delivery place? Prices are still too high to make it a regular spot. BUT I was pleasantly surprised with their soup dumplings. They tasted great! So now I know whenever I'm craving them, and don't want to get out of pajamas, and will lower my standards, they can be delivered right to my door! I wish they came with vinegar, would make it even better. The eggplant/tofu dish was good but not great. I asked for it to be spicy which they did but I guess I'll have to say "extra spicy" next time. I'll try different things next time most likely.
Review Source:This is the only chinese place in my neighborhood I could find that has no delivery fee so I gave it a whirl. Â A really great experience. Â The guy who answered the phone was very meticulous about making sure he got everything right and recognized that I was a new customer. Â Hot & Sour soup was very good. Sesame Chicken was miles ahead of most chop-shop chinese, not over-fried and good cuts of white meat. Â I want to try the soup dumplings next and another review on here has me wanting to try the pepper shrimp. Â I live about a mile away and it took 30 minutes from order to my door.
Review Source:I would give this place 4 starts, but I have had a few occasions where is difficult to get service and food has taken longer than expected. Â If that was not the case I could say their food has never disappointed.
Things to try: Â Sizzling rice soup, Â Tangerine Lamb and Black pepper beef.
Ok.... My family and I have been coming here for literally 20 years......
I guess I don't have to say much more..............
Great fresh food, Tony the owner is such a good man, and the staff is very attentive.
We can't go elsewhere.......
Everywhere else we've tried throughout the years has been food drenched in oil and sauce....
I hope they stay forever.....
One of my favorite lunch time spots - the food here is excellent. I'm a big fan of their fried rice: peas, carrots, green onion, egg and your choice of the usual meats. The beef fried rice is amazing - the beef is tender, juicy and tasty - unusual in most fried rice I've had. You can also order combos (for the same price) as well - the chicken / shrimp combo fried rice is also hard to beat. Their lunch specials are also delicious and come with soup (hot 'n sour or egg flower), rice (plain or veggie) and an egg roll. The Kung Pao is particularly good, though perhaps a  bit mild for a Kung Pao. Their wonton soup is also excellent - some of the best I've ever had.
Service is great, very friendly people. Atmosphere is quiet at lunch - sometimes I have to whole place to myself. Â They also play actual Chinese Music during lunch - not the typical KISS FM crap that you find playing in many ethnic restaurants - makes for a much more relaxing and authentic experience.
Definitely good Saturday and Sunday deals. If you come between 9am-2pm they have two separate menus where you can mostly order dim sum most for under $5 and they had pretty good portions. You also have the option to do the champagne or sake brunch but the plates r mostly entree dishes not the dim sum/ dumplings. We had about six or seven orders of different dim sums and our total only ended up being less than 25 and I was pretty full so it was a good experience. I would like to go again and try the champagne brunch it was around $12-13. The food was good I would take off two stars because the ambiance was only so-so, despite being in a neighborhood like Los Feliz I was expecting a bit more pizzazz? Maybe since we came at an odd time?
Review Source:This place is incredibly authentic...in the sense that two of their waiters had a full on argument in Mandarin right in front of us. I immediately fell in love after that.
Foodwise, I mean, who cares after that, right? Seeing waiters argue in Mandarin is something I only thought I would see in movies...and boom, that shit happened right in front of me!
But for reals though, my buddy and I ordered lunch specials. I don't remember what I had exactly, however, I remember it was quite delicious. I've eaten a lot of Chinese food in my time, and I can safely say this is a Good Chinese Restaurant. It gets the Steve Seal of Approval...the next time I want Chinese food and I'm in the area, I'll be going back here.
I am so embarrassed for suggesting this place, I think it marked the worst dining experience my friends and I have had this year.
I came here on a saturday night, party of 4, actually to scope it out on potentially having a big birthday dinner here. The interior was cool, and they had a musician playing the chinese harp live. Here's how our night went wrong:
1) Took 20 minutes to get our drinks
2) We never got waters for the table, despite having asked twice
3) From the moment we ordered, we waited 1 hour for our food. It wasn't even that busy.
4) They forgot our appetizer (soup dumplings), and added it when we reminded them. It came out last.
5) They got 2 out of 5 orders wrong ( + forgot one):
- brought us Garlic Chicken instead of Curry chicken
- brought us house fried rice instead of pineapple fried rice
6) Food was so so, all tasted quite similar. PS i lived in Hong Kong for 12 years so I know my chinese food...
Overall, huge disappointment to not get the food you ordered after having waited so long. The main server was not apologetic at all, never said anything about the wait, the menu item mix up, or forgetting our orders. And cherry on top, there were a couple extra items on our bill. Did we get mixed up with another table?
yikes.. not coming here again.
The Mandarin Beef was a great try! Â Nice space, quick and friendly service. Â It has those qualities that make it a great place inside... staff yelling at each other in a foreign language... boxes of fortune cookies stacked up in plain sight... I would take this over any attempt to look trendy or hip inside.
Review Source:This place is the bomb. Â Not only is the food extra tasty, but the staff is probably as friendly as it gets. Â They have your standard Chinese food offerings, but there is a ton of slightly more authentic dishes. Â I'm just lucky that it's a 5 minute drive from my place and I am close enough for delivery. Â I'm sure there are better Chinese restaurants out there, but the place is run like a tight ship - great service, delivery is easy and quick, and they have a functional website that makes it easy to order from.
Review Source:In my perfect world, every Sunday is Dim Sum Brunch Sunday. But I don't want to drive all the way to Al Hambra to make my dreams come true and I don't want to settle for a sub par experience.
Enter The Palace (pun intended).
Let's start at the very beginning (it's a very good place to start). When you park, there's a lot, and it's even free! From the moment you walk through the door you step into this Far East oasis of high ceilings, red lacquer, pretty fish in a saltwater tank.
I was the first person in there and the waiter was unfailingly gracious and polite, going over the menu and going the extra distance to be accommodating. We ordered all the dim sum classics - scallion pancakes, shrimp dumplings, soup dumplings, white fluffy bao filled with bbq pork. Everything was fantastic but the pancakes were out of this world - so much so that I ordered extra to take home. Throughout it all the waiter - without being intrusive - made sure to keep our tea refilled consistently, checked every now and then on our sauces, and wrapped up my pancakes beautifully without even being asked. And when I almost forgot them, he ran after me with the bag.
It's amazing how bad service can leave a sour taste in your mouth and good service can elevate the entire meal.
We finished with fortune cookies, of course, and my friend got one that said "Check back later! I'm sleeping! Even cookies need their sleep!" She got a huge kick out of it, as did I.
The cherry on top? Totally affordable. Overall, a big thanks to The Palace for making me feel like a princess. I'm sure I'll be back soon!
3.5*
First, I typically frequent the SGV for Chinese food to give you an idea of my expectations. I tried this place out to see if it would be our rehearsal dinner location. We've now decided to drive to Chinatown. The food is decent Chinese food. I would equate it to Panda Inn - a step above Panda Express. Now I love Panda but I know what I'm getting myself into when I eat it. The Palace is a little sweet for my taste and the decor screams "we're Chinese - I swear!!". The prices are around $10-$15 for each dish which is a little above average given the dish sizes. But to their credit, not horribly overpriced which they might be able to get away with given the need for Asian food in the area. I was hoping that the 4* were truly indicative of the food but I should have had realistic expectations given the location. Ultimately, decent food but trust me it's worth it to drive out to the SGV.
Ladies, move your hair weave to the side and guys turn your hat to the back! Â The heat and steam from the food at The Palace will expose your unnatural enhancements. Â Ladies, those fake eyelashes may fall into your food, and guys that mustache may fall, or smear (for those that fill-in). Â At any rate, you may want to come natural to this restaurant, because the food is good, hot, and steamy!
My friend and I met here again for lunch and wanted to try something different.  For whatever reason, we went bold and tried something with some sizzle, sour, and hotness.  To start, my friend opted for the Hot and Sour Soup.  I didn't want an appetizer because I wanted to leave room for the imposing and sizzling dish I ordered.  My selection was the Sizzling Black Pepper Beef.  When my food arrived I thought I would have to pull out an umbrella, as I knew the fire sprinklers were about to come on from all the steam from my food.  Our server cooked my food at our table and it was both an eye and ear opening experience.  Fancy that!  Most importantly, the food was good!  My friend ordered a shrimp dish and we both ordered a side of brown rice.  Both entrées were less than $20 and well worth it, especially for authentic Chinese cuisine!
As a whole, The Palace got a little secret in the sauce that brings us back to dine again and again.  Not only is the food good, but the service is good, as well.  The ambiance is quite decent, full of Asian décor.  There's even a large flat screen television to keep some entertained.  Speaking of entertainment, we may have to go back to hear their live music on Friday and Saturday nights.  Without a doubt, I plan to go back for some more of their good food.
There's some nasty bad sports at another Chinese restaurant giving this great restaurant some bad reviews. Â Don't listen!
The food here is consistently tasty, the service very friendly, and the ambiance perfect. Â Our favorite Kung Pao Beef of all LA. Â Great for a date or group dinner. Â A+
If you don't want to heat up frozen Chinese and Indian fare at home, let these guys do the work. Â If you're lucky, it won't be cold in the middle!
On the bright side, most of the food was not bad. Â However, I would go somewhere else if I wanted outstanding food. Â This kind of falls in the category of a place I would only go to for convenience.
Extra stars because the wait staff is nice and you can tell they're trying to make you feel at home.
STAY AWAY from this place. This was my third trip and LAST! I gave them too many chances thinking the rating was accurate but after many trips and service there, I'm pretty sure they are rating and giving 4 stars themselves!
- poor service ( trying to over charge you)
- the food is not FRESH ( each time me and my friends are getting sick)
- food does not taste good ( tried many dishes on the menu)
- slow and weird energy
Overall CHI Dynasty is 100 times better and won't charge you as much!
I love the Palace! One of the best Chinese restaurants that I've been to. The food is excellent! The only downside is the cost per dish. The dishes are priced on the higher side. The flavors of the dishes though are exceptional.
My last visit I ordered 2 Chinese chicken salads, 1 fish dish, 1 beef dish and the price was around $60. Like I said its not cheap, but you pay for what you get! I say it's worth the money, but only once in a while!
Very good food. We ordered family style, beef and broccoli, sweet an sour chicken, kungpau chicken, vegetable noodles, fried rice and corn soup.
I loved that they have a fish tank there with beautiful exotic fish. They also had a musician playing the Guzheng, a Chinese string instrument. I think the live music is only on the weekends. It was nice to have relaxing music palying in teh background.
I stopped by here for lunch after realizing that both Mother Dough and MessHall weren't open until later in the evening. Everything about The Palace was good but nothing really took it to the next level to earn a four star review. The beef skewers were tasty, the Palace Fried Rice was very good (and thankfully, light on carrots, which I've never liked in my fried rice.) The sweet and sour pork was solid but a little dry. The menu is a wee bit pricey however the portions are big so it evens out. (I'll be having a Chinese leftovers brunch while watching football tomorrow morning.)
On the bright side, I was sold enough on the food that the Palace will definitely be added to my list of potential delivery options in the area. However, if I'm ever out and about, I think I'll be venturing to try other places before returning to The Palace.
This is an edit to my initial review..
This actually should've been my original review because I really do love the food here..After a very upsetting experience having a take out order mistake not resolved
Mr. Tony sent me a sincere apology and asked me to come back so he could remedy their mistake..That's all I wanted because Tony has always been very nice to me and after his letter I am sure he cares a lot about his customers. Plus it would've been really difficult to stop eating at such a delicious place...so after his letter,I do highly reccomend this place..
Here should've been my real review of the Palace:
I grew up in the San Gabriel valley which is the Mecca of Chinese food in Southern California..My sister lived in San Fransisco and I remember saying "Frisco has the best Chinese food!" I don't know what it is..but the flavors are so much richer and tastier.. I always wished I could find a place here that had flavors that I loved so much in Frisco's Chinatown..Lucky for me the Palace had those flavors that Iwas craving!
I love their darker version of a hot and sour soup and I always order beef with oyster sauce...it's amazing..I actually think this is one if the best Chinese food places and I grew up in the SGV!
*
I really hope they put some outdoor eating arrangements here in the future like all the other los feliZ places..people like eating outside in this town..
****original message*****
This place has really good food...I gave it 1 star because of how they conduct business..At LUNCH time I called for take out..I ordered a dish on the lunch special menu..when I came to pick it up they charged me full price!! I told them I wanted their lunch special and they said you have to specify that and didn't offer any apology or anything..it was 12:30 pm! Why would I want the more expensive dinner verison and w/out the free soup salad? Very upset
I really wanted to love this place because I love the New York style schezuan that the menu seems to offer.
But it's not good, you guys. The sesame noodles were cold spaghetti with tahini-type sauce, the schezuan beef was that spongey kind of beef that seems cheap and kinda yucky.
The place does have great parking, and the un(der)employed actress/ hostess was very sweet. But...um...no.
It's not very often I think, "I can't wait to take everyone here" mid-meal. The Palace was this place. On the look out for a great Chinese place in the Los Feliz / Silverlake area, I'm stoked to have finally found it.
Met the owner and had a chat (nicest man ever) and he was able to give some great recommendations.
Lowdown:
Soup Dumplings (must get)
Roast Duck with Mandarin Sauce
Honey Walnut Shrimp
Mongolian Beef
Great Staff, delicious food. Will be back with a mob of people.
