This place is dominated by John Marshall students. Although the rooftop is pretty big, it gets super crowded to the point you literally can't get a drink. If you don't have a table you're pretty much SOL. We luckily did have a table and ordered food. Pretty big mistake. The food was yucky. We had pizza (cardboard), a veggie wrap (tasteless), and a chicken sandwich (dry). I would recommend this place if you're not looking to eat and don't mind a 21-25 yo crowd.

During the busy work week, this is a hidden gen, worth the walk across town!

The rooftop is the only option. (Don't bother with the actual resturant)

Plymouth's rooftop is my most favoritest place for drinks in the Loop. Although they're usually very busy, I've always gotten a table or a spot at the bar. The rooftop bar is fully stocked (not all rooftops/patios get that treatment), there are plenty of TVs, and the beer on tap gets swapped seasonally. The real gem here, Plymouth's pride, is the unobstructed view from the rooftop. Unlike Vertigo or Roof which, while sitting at greater altitudes, construct tall barriers separating patrons from their doom, Plymouth trusts its denizens enough to let them enjoy nature unfiltered.

My only complaints are: (1) the hours vary day-to-day and season-to-season, and each of Plymouth's three bars have different sets of hours. Plus, Plymouth closes randomly for private events. Especially if you're bringing a group, be sure to call ahead. Lastly (2), service can be kinda sluggish, especially at the bar. But don't let those details deter you from experiencing Plymouth's unique and fun atmosphere.

Breakfast is always great, try out any of their specials. Sometimes, service can be slow. We lunch there every couple of weeks or more in the summer and the dishes are hit or miss. What can I say, the rooftop is a great place to have lunch during the few warm months in Chicago. Prices on some of their drinks are a bit high. If you are in the south loop and need a hearty breakfast or lunch with coworkers this is a good choice.

We went here because we had a http://Restaurant.com certificate for $25.

Upon entering I had to look around for someone to acknowledge my presence; finally, a young woman helped me and sat me in a nice location not right on top of any other tables. The restaurant was VERY cold, but one of the waiters noticed me shivering and turned up the heat. THANK YOU!

The food was decent, sweet potato fries were cold and soggy and the veggie wrap didn't have that many veggies. The food definitely isn't fresh. Tasted a LOT better as a snack later in the evening after a few more cocktails.

The waitress was definitely more interested in socializing than working, but we didn't have a problem getting refills etc.

Overall- it seems like a place that you should go to after work on a warm summer evening for cocktails and appetizers. Don't expect much. Its essentially dive bar food with nicer fixings and higher prices.

I never trust places that don't post there prices on the menu and I never will--that includes you Plymouth.

This bar tries to be fancy because of it location, but fails miserably. Like many others have said the service is awful. Our waitress forgot drinks, request and simple courtesy. If not for my guest's pleas she would have gotten a note on how to improve for a tip. She even served us water, after 2 requests, in dirty cups. Thanks so much for your concern about the environment, but don't recycle plastic cups. She didn't even notice that the two glasses of water we begged for were drastically different colors.

The drinks are mediocre and about 2 dollars more than the should be for bottom shelf booze. Don't waste your time waiting an hour for service just go elsewhere.

The service here is like a slap in the face, from the moment I walked into this place and was half greeted by the hostess and then the server came to the table mumbling with no intro just "Can I help you?" I should have walked out the door. Now to the food.....I played it safe and had a burger and fries. The Burger was really good, the fries were like precooked or maybe cooked in old grease. The food matched the service. I don't know what else to say. My visit was in May, earlier in the day hopefully some stuff have changed about the place.

The food here is absolute garbage. We ordered a steak sandwich and got beef jerky. Posted pictures. I'm sure the roof top bar area is much better... I'll never know since I've been traumatized by the jerky.

We ended up at the Plymouth rooftop after a Bears Sunday game in search for the afternoon wave of football games.

It was surprisingly empty in the afternoon (for a while, we thought it was closed since downstairs it said it closed at 4PM - apparently this is not the case). One of the 2 TVs was out of order, but the host was nice enough to switch the other TV to the games. Not the best option for game-watching.

Nice rooftop, although it seemed a bit dirty (the fake plants next to me were covered in dust, we had the view overlooking a dirty roof with a ton of pigeons frolicking around). Overall, not amused.

The menu was decent, with a wide variety of items: your usual burgers, wraps, salads and pizza - although they weren't making it that day. Nothing special. I ended up ordering an appetizer for dinner, a shrimp basket and it was good - not too greasy and a good portion size. These shrimp are JUMBO so I would highly suggest ordering the half-dozen, I was more than full.

Overall, this place felt more like a diner, banking on its rooftop for business. Service was good, but probably since it was so empty. No rush to get back here.

When you walk up to the rooftop bar the views make you feel that you're in a great city but after receiving their horrible service you're left feeling that you're really in a small midwestern town. I wasted an hour of my life at this place, and should have stayed for a lot less. My friends and I went there for happy hour on a Friday, our server seemed bothered that we actually wanted her to bring us food and drinks, she seemed more interested in sitting at a back table talking to another server versus helping fill orders and service our group and because of this bad experience I will never go back to this place. On top of that, she wanted was rushing to leave so they could fit more people in.

High enough on the rooftop to escape the street level hustle-bustle noise. Like the view of the Harold Washington Library.
Place is clean, good music and overall fun-loving atmosphere.
Service id attentive and friendly.

The food was incredibly disappointing. If only they would serve better food, they would be competing with the folks just south of the river, on the river.

What a waste of a nice location......next time, we'll stick with cocktails and apps. Very hard to get THAT wrong.

Plymouth has a good roof top to hang at. I went here with a group of friends after the Chicago Wine fest and I was disappointed at the emptiness of the roof top. It was only a matter of time that we tried to liven up the place. Mission accomplished. I would give this place another shot.

Rooftop in the city equals very cool! This place is situated close to the "L" on Van Buren and Plymouth Ct., so expect the price of alcohol to be pricey here. Since, the rooftop is located 3-story high, taking the stairs might not be fun, but sadly it is faster than taking the elevator as there is only one elevator and it is very small. Also, it sucks that this place closes at midnight on Saturday.

Checked this place out for the first time , me and co-workers stopped in for happy hour on a Tuesday and had drinks on the rooftop. Very lovely place the staff was very friendly and attentive. We had Margaritas frozen and they were delicious and anyone who drinks margarita's knows everybody can't make a good one!

We didn't get to sample the food this trip however the menu selection looked pretty good we even set a date to return and next time we will sample the food!

Even a packed, packed, packed Roof is a fun roof!
My friend and I arrived for Friday Happy Hour and had the same idea as a zillion other folks. We enjoyed the Pomegranate Martini specials and milled for about 30 minutes until a table was available.
Once seated, we ordered some appetizers and the shish kabob and were not disappointed. So tasty!
Because it's July in Chicago, the fans and misters were a huge high point. The tables of good looking Misters drinking the table top beer contraptions were also a high point. :)
I love this rooftop year round. The people and staff are awesome and friendly.

First time there with a co-worker for a late lunch, we were promptly greeted by the host and were sat by the outer seating area on the rooftop as we requested. It was extremely hot on the day we went and the cool mist sprayers and overhead oscillating fans were a nice touch and helped to cool things down a bit.

Our waitress Emily was very pleasant and patient as we took in the atmosphere and sort of dragged our feet to order. The subject of craft beers came up, because we noticed there wasn't much of a choice for local craft brews and only saw La Fin Del Monde on the drink menu, which is a Canadian made beer, and was the only real craft beer on the menu, which we eventually ordered.

During our conversation, Emily said she was a big fan of the local brew scene and we talked for a bit about our favorite brands. Emily said she will suggest a broader selection of craft beers to the management.

I had the chicken and avocado wrap and it was surprisingly tasty and far better than expected for bar food. The flat screen TV's provided another for of entertainment when the conversation slowed.

Emily was great and I promised I'd write about our positive experience there, so here we are!

On my girls weekend trip to Chicago, we were walking around and happened to see a cool rooftop bar a few streets over. We all decided to give it a try and I'm glad we did. Once we came into the building (which is a small entrance) you go directly to an elevator and take it to the rooftop. It was a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't too crowded. We found a table right by the balcony and they have light misters which keeps you cool without getting you wet. We were only there for drinks, so I can't comment on the food. The happy hour prices were good and we enjoyed the atmosphere.

I strongly recommend dining at this establishment... they validate parking, its close to the red/blue/metra lines.

The rooftop level was packed to capacity on a day that was already hot... if you like the rush hour/happy hour loud crowd, go to the rooftop. For a homey, diner experience, go to the main level.

Since I prefer to chill after a work week, we ventured to the lower bar level which has a very relaxed ambiance (booths, high top & low top tables, seats at the bar) and great service.

The prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the food and the service. The daily $5 martini specials is a really good concept. The pomegranate martini was delish! The $1 fish tacos were very tasty. I also experienced the "Ole Burger" turned turkey (turkey burger with turkey bacon)... they will turn any menu burger into a turkey burger upon request. (Yay!)

(I presume the price range is $$ only because you'll probably take advantage of several items.)

I visited the rooftop bar for the first time this past weekend and was sold immediately. My good friend was visiting from out of town and after having walked by the place about 1,000 times a day, we decided to give it a try.

As a poor college student, I was surprised at how affordable it was! I should mention I didn't look at their full menu, just the drink specials. But all their specials were great. We went on a Saturday night, got a great seat over looking everything, had a wonderful waitress, and ordered one of their specials for that night - a peartini (pear martini, duh). Only $5 each! They were delicious. My friend and I were only going to get one drink and stay for a little bit but we both ended up ordering three drinks (each better than the one before) and staying for around 2-3 hours.

I already have plans to come back sometime this week for a happy hour drink with another friend. Can't wait!

No prices on menu - really whats the point of a menu then might as well be bar service. When asked for the price on the sangria our waitress responded with "ummm I'm not sure it's like $9" Really you're not sure?? Between the lack of helpful menu and unhelpful waitress we were screwed!

My friend was disappointed by her Collins and ask to exchange. This was met with resistance and questions of "what's wrong with the drink?" and of course after a quick talk with the head-waitress they said they can't exchange it.

What kind of bar doesn't have visible priced, unhelpful and questioning staff, bad drinks and then doesn't just substitute a freaking drink for a 6 person tab?

A crappy one.

I was surprised by this place actually. I always walked by it and wanted to try it, but never had a chance. Finally, I did.

I will start off by saying that it's kind of an odd setup. The first floor is a restaurant that has it's own hours. If you want to go to the bar, you take the elevator up to the top. I don't really know what was on the 2nd and 3rd floors... I think it was more restaurant space. If you go to the bar at the top, you have to go down to the floor below to use the bathroom.

The service was ok. It took a couple minutes to get seated. They had a sign that said to wait to be seated, so we did. However, we noticed that most people tried to seat themselves because they wanted specific seats... sometimes they would make them move and sometimes they wouldn't. Our waitress got our orders in decent time.

We tried the nachos for the appetizer. They were great actually! And, for once, I ran out of chips rather than running out of stuff to scoop up with them. That's so rare. lol We thought about asking for more chips, but then our entrees came.

I had the cheeseburger and my friend had a chicken sandwich. The burger was very filling. It was quite good though. My friend liked his chicken sandwich a lot too. I had sweet potato fries for my side. They were good, but I was too full to eat much of them. My friend had the waffle fries and liked them.

The prices were reasonable. I'd definitely come back to this place.

Came here twice. The first time I came here in a party of 8 and there was no room for us at the rooftop so we went downstairs. The woman decided she wasnt going to serve us soup because there wasn't enough for everyone. I'm not greedy about food in anyway, but that just seemed like she was cheating us out of our meal. The chicken chipotle wrap and waffle fries were good though.

Went there again with two friends to go to the rooftop bar. Was pretty nice with a diverse crowd and drinks were standard. Bartenders need to dress better (light dress with dark underwear is just... no...) and the place smelled like pungent cheese the whole time. Weird. 9 dollars for a long island iced tea. The bartenders respond fast; there were three people working behind the bar when we were there. The place was really crowded because of the JP Morgan Chase Marathon thing.

I don't think this is a place where you can meet new people though. Everyone just seemed to be doing their own thing. The place is also ridiculously loud because everyone's just crammed into this little balcony area trying to talk over each other.

I'd still really like to know what that pungent cheese smell was.

Oh and the elevators take forever, and it costs THREE dollars to use their ATM. Total ripoff. There's also weirdly lawyer offices between the first floor restaurant and the rooftop bar.

Info:
I went there on a Thursday at 3:15pm ish. I wanted to have some food on the "rooftop deck". Upon arrival, we were told the rooftop deck would not be open for 20 or so mins. So, we waited, and then went back up. We were then told they were only serving drinks; no food could be ordered. Lame! So we went down to the indoor restaurant.

Food Failure:
We both ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with lime and avocado on a pretzel bun. I couldn't eat it all. I shouldn't have eaten any of it. The chicken breast was dry and likely way overcooked; it was hard and chewy. It was AWFUL! The faint traces of lime flavor were good. The avocado was good.

Service:
Our server was awesome! She was attentive, friendly, and fun! Five stars to her!

I've been here before, and they had OK food. This time it was an epic failure. I want a refund on that horrible meal. They should have paid me to try to keep it down. The service is always good.

Our group was pleasantly surprised by this little diner.

We were trying to find a "non chain" place to eat in The Loop and stumbled upon Plymouth's.

I had an Ole! Burger that was a bit over cooked but was still good. I'd recommend getting the waffle fries, as the sweet potato fries left something to be desired. The chicken noodle, maybe it was rice, soup was delicious, seasoned perfectly. I'm not usually a fan of chicken soup but would easily order it as a stand alone meal if I'm there in the future.

Breakfast is available all day, which is a huge plus for me. There is also a full bar down stairs, and their menu is available in the diner.

I do not know why the price range is listed as $$ because this place is very affordable. I ordered a breakfast special off their "Cheap Ass Breakfast" menu for $5.99 and I could not finish it.

Plymouth Restaurant & Bar is part of a conglomerate of restaurants including the White Palace Grill and the Hollywood Grill. Plymouth offers casual American diner food like cheeseburgers, philly cheesteaks, meat loafs, omelettes, pan cakes, scrambles, etc. The ambience is casual, fitting for the downtown lunch crowd.

I ordered a vegetable omelette with hashbrowns and coffee. The omelette had a generous variety of vegetables. It was not overly salted. The hashbrowns were soft, warm, and comforting.

The waittresses are chatty and friendly.

There is also a rooftop bar, but I did not go up there since it was only 10 a.m. Maybe next time...

I came here hoping to sail the ocean blue in 1492 (okay, that's a lie and has nothing to do with my review)...

Actually, there is one reason to come here and one reason only - HAPPY HOUR

DON'Ts
Don't expect to meet random people; it's not that kind of bar.
Don't hope to get full off of their food; it's not good and definitely not fresh
Don't come with a big party without calling ahead (especially Thurs-Sat)
Don't straighten your hair in the summer and then come here; they mist water on you like your veggies at the grocery store
Don't come out of your way to come here; it's just not worth it unless you're already in the hood

DOs
Do come with coworkers for a chill happy hour spot
Do take advantage of their daily food specials; yes the food sucks, but if it's $1, why not
Do come during the winter; the rooftop is heated , but still has a feel of outdoors
Do take public transportation here unless you want to dodge walkers and spend forever getting a cheap parking spot

Well, Plymouth definitely has some Dos and Don'ts; feel free to add anymore you can think of...

The first time I came to Plymouth was with a buddy after a meeting, and they had some sweet specials.
We got a plate of 6 Parmesan Chicken Sliders for $15 and $3 Coors lights. The atmosphere was relaxed on a cool rooftop with a nice view. Though, it did seem like their typical customers were businessmen and lawyers going out during happy hour. I definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a cool place to enjoy a meal and drinks with friends and you're around the Jackson Redline stop.

What a disappointment! I met my wife here for a late lunch (about 1:15 PM). The place was not that busy as most of the lunch crowd had already gone back to their offices.

I have to admit that the staff here was great. Everyone was really friendly, helpful and attentive. That is where the positives end on my review of this place.

I ordered something simple: a burger and soup. It was the most unmemorable meal that I have ever partaken in. The soup was warm (not hot). The burger tasted like it was pre-cooked hours ago and left on the side of the grill just waiting to be ordered. This meat was terrible. It was all dried out and nearly inedible.

Although I had a bad visit, I am more than willing to give this place another shot. I am really considering this visit as me being in the wrong place at the wrong time sort of deal. I still have hope that this place can give me a good meal some time in the future.

If a patron says, "That's not what I ordered"... take it back and bring back the correct item(s). Oh, and don't argue with the patron.

On my first visit there with coworkers for drinks, I found myself having a discussion with our waitperson about my drink. I was presented with the wrong one and asked if she could take it back because it wasn't what I ordered. I am usually extremely patient, but this was just terrible service.

Me: Could you please take this back, since I ordered a Lemon Drop Martini?
Her: That's a Cosmopolitan.
Me: I ordered a Lemon Drop Martini.
Her: That's a Cosmopolitan.
Me: I ordered a Lemon Drop Martini.
Her: That's a Cosmopolitan.
Me: I ordered a Lemon Drop Martini.
Her: That's a Cosmopolitan.
Me: Could you please take this back, since I ordered a Lemon Drop Martini?
Her: But that's a different price point.
Me: (WTF?!?!?!?) ....

I was close to losing it completely, so I threw my hands up in the air and said ok, fine, nevermind, i'll just drink it. My senpai was pretty perturbed, as well, but luckily he still had some patience left and offered to handle the "discussion". I was DONE, so I told him not to worry about it.

That was my first, only, and last time there.

I love this place. I realize that there are tons of other more swanky roof tops but this one is just cozy. It is in what appears to be an old hotel. You get on the creaky elevator and voila you are on this warm (literally in the winter) roof top. The service is always very good and at time entertaining. The manager, I think, is very accommodating and she walks around to ensure that everyone is okay. I have not had the opportunity to try their happy hours specials since I work in the burbs but errrr I may have to become "ill" one day and trek on down to Plymouth before the summer is out.

loves it!

Went here for lunch with some coworkers the other day. Had the acropolis sandwich which I struggled to consume because it was SO dry. Water helped me take it down, but the service was slow to react to empty glasses. The wheat ciabatta bread was a little hard around the edges and I would have like more than 4 pieces of sliced up portabello mushrooms on my sandwich. I barely finished half. I did take the other half to go and gave it to a homeless person on my walk back to Union Station. Maybe I should have reconsidered that. Poor guy might have choked to death.

I regretfully ordered fruit on the side when I should have had the waffle fries - now those were goood. The fruit was not freshly cut, looked like it had been sitting out for a couple hours. Oh well. I did get free soup for some reason. French onion was very salty, didn't finish that either.

I've heard it's a cheap place to grab a drink with a decent view from the rooftop, just make sure you don't come hungry.

Warning: Stay away from the Waldorf Salad. The salad dressing is disgusting and completely inedible.

Other than that, the rooftop is fantastic. I like that they have a pretty strong heat lamp for days that are little cooler. My husband's Super Cheeseburger and sweet potato fries were outstanding. The prices were quite reasonable -- less than $10 a plate. It's not a bad gig for the Loop.

This place is worth the hype I've been hearing for that past few years. :)

Yikes.

I was so excited to check this place out. Back in my Brown-Line-Riding days, I would see Plymouth from the El and think "Look at all those happy people drinking beers in the sunshine on that lovely rooftop deck. Maybe one day I will be one of them." [Wistful sigh]

Well yesterday I got to be one of them.

The work crowd and I head up to the rooftop deck to enjoy the brief Chicago Summer. The place is half-empty, so we head for an open table. Wrong! We are quickly informed that there is a waiting list for the tables. Really? But they are all open... Is this like when clubs maintain lines outside so you will think they are cooler than they really are? Problem here is that I'm ALREADY INSIDE and can SEE that there's no one here at the tables.

We finally coax the blank staring hostess into an explaination - there's a party coming at 6PM and they need the table. OK, makes sense... except that it's 5PM. So, can we sit here now?

Seated, we order beers. To their credit, the beer list is respectible and service is quick.

At 6PM, as promised, we relinquish our table to the party and head to the basement bar. The elevator ride down stops on each floor and is an amusing trip through the various layers of Plymouth.

Rooftop bar: Cool-Kid After Work Club
Ground floor: Decor rivaling that of a Denny's
Basement Bar: Precisely that, a bar in the basement. Nothing fancy.

The first thing we see in the basement is a buffet. Sadly, it was full of random meats (eww!) that I was told were disgusting (given my tenuous relationship with meat, I utterly refused to eat this stuff on looks alone).

Two more Leinie's and I'm done. The quest for the perfect beer-and-sunshine after-work spot continues...

Did the rooftop - nice....Service was good - ordered the naked baked wings with "spicy" sauce on the side. They were OK, really dried out and the ranch was not a real buttermilk ranch. Meh.

Bathrooms one floor down. Plan ahead for the lift or dodge the servers and go down the back stairs. Bathrooms sucked. Icky. Nasty. No hand towels. Grosszilla.

Great space, great space, great space. Drink your beer, eat your food and savor the space. Pee when you hit the next place.

Plymouth is actually quite a Celtic city as far as cities in the United Kingdom go. The area which is now the county of Devon (let's for the sake of this review call it County Devon) - where Plymouth is located - was settled by the Celts by the time of the Roman Invasion right at the turn of the A.D.s. The local football/soccer team is even called Plymouth Argyle due to this heritage.

So, perhaps Plymouth Restaurant isn't an Irish bar, per se, but I feel as though I can justify and feel no guilt going there on St. Patrick's Saturday after the downtown parade. It wasn't my first choice, but every Irish bar downtown (even way down in Printer's Row) was packed and/or didn't serve food. Hackney's looked like a war zone.

Here the Guinness was $18.00 in pitchers (pretty pricey but a better deal than their $6.50 glasses) but they are pretty large pitchers. And they had plenty of Celtic food on the menu. Cheddar cheese (local to Celtic Devon) makes a fine grilled cheese sandwich (though Munster would have actually been Irish thinking back). And the tater tots of course contain potatoes and what's more Irish than that? For carnivores they also have corned beef and each meal came with a cabbage salad on St. Patrick's weekend (and maybe year round).

And, most importantly the downstairs bar had on Michigan State in their kelly greens! This was the most important discovery I made on St. Patrick's Day - the Plymouth if you eat in the restaurant proper and not on the roof is actually quite a nice place. The basement bar isn't crowded and pretty chill plus the jukebox is cheap and the drinks are cold.

The ground floor restaurant is actually so sedate and family-oriented that going through it to the bar felt wrong.

As an option for St. Patrick's Day weekend, it proved no costlier and less crowded a choice than some place with O' or Mc in the title (which might very well have had a cover charge). I will, in the future, just tell people I went to the O'Plymouth and call it a day. Now to figure out how to justify going to McWings in Ukranirish Village for St. Patrick's proper.

Over-priced and boring. But the food was good.

This is Binyon's ghost. There's no escaping it for a relative "old-timer" like me. I started eating at Binyon's regularly in 1983 when I began law school down the street, and I continued to eat at Binyons for about 13 years until it closed in 1996.

It will always be Binyon's to me. Their overpriced diner food, no matter how good, and it was good, will never measure up to Binyon's. No way.
