Let's put it this way, the place took Squints Palledorous FOREVVVVEEER http://www.youtube.com/w… and doesn't serve any meat and I'd still put them at about 3 and a half stars. Coming from a someone who could barely make it a month of vegetarianism without cheating and that should tell you that the food is pretty darn good.
I had the Garibaldi which is soy-based steak, tomato, jalapeño pepper and mushroom wrapped in a tortilla that was the size of Conan Obrien's head. I was able to make it into two meals and with fake meat one could imagine that it's a pretty big portion. Also got to try a taste of my buddy Canice G's Veggie Cubano which was really tasty too. Not nearly as good as a real cubano, but what veggie food item is? Â
They have complimentary chips and a pretty awesome menu of smoothies on the back which are additional pluses. Overall a good experience just beware during lunch dining in may last way longer than you expect so take out and picnicking somewhere is a safe option.
For those who are vegans or vegetarians, I can see this place being a great food experience.
I knew what to expect when I came here. I'm a city gal at heart, so the low key sorta' gritty appearance of this place didn't seem to bother me. BTW, the bathroom was super clean, so I really do mean "appearance." It was a cold Friday when I met some friends for lunch, and the truth with this place being somewhat small is the fact that every time that door swung open my brain became a little bit more frozen. Not a good thing when the place is so authentic the server barely speaks English!
Because we came for lunch, there was only one server in the place and it took her awhile to get around to our table. Had I not been in the company of such great people, I might have been annoyed enough to go ask for service. But I felt like I was in a family restaurant and I'm a pretty patient person.
I'm allergic to concentrated soy, so I stay away from tofu and mostly anything that isn't a simple salad when I go to a vegetarian restaurant. To make sure I wasn't completely overwhelmed by the wonderfully extensive menu when I got there, I studied it beforehand and had my heart set on a salad with beets. I love beets. Perfect! At the table with my friends I placed the order and anxiously awaited only to have the server return to tell me they were out of the salad. When I tried to ask if there was a particular ingredient they were out of (because I really wanted those beets), she just said they were out and pointed to the menu for me to choose a replacement. I opted for a fresh spinach leaf salad with asparagus, carrots, tomatoes and avocado. Still sounded very yummy and healthy. Gotta' get those greens! Salad was a fantastic size with dark fresh greens served with tomatoes around the perimeter. Nice presentation, but I didn't really find more than the equivalent of maybe one asparagus stalk. Regardless, I loved the lime dressing. It was a bit strong at first, but I got used to it.
The best part of my meal was that I got to witness the miraculous amounts of food on my friends' plates, especially the burrito the size of a mountain on one of them. That would have lasted me three meals! Portion sizes are really great here.
Overall, not the right place for me because of my personal limitations, but my salad was delicious and healthy, and I did get to try the sip of the fresh juice drink my friend had and it was warm and flavorful. Very apple-y!
Cold and uncomfortable dining experience, slow service, but truly authentic and unique menu for those who can eat soy. I will recommend this place to all my vegan city friends.
I, personally, love it... but I'm not a stickler for cleanliness or being prompt, which may or may not be an issue for someone unlike me.
So, it's kind of sticky, and the system isn't totally intuitive with a carryout type counter and also a single server who appeared to be one of, if not the only, employee here on a busy Friday lunch. It took a looooong time before anyone even came over to take our order and it took an even loooooonger time until she came back to tell one of my dining partners that they were out of something on the salad she ordered, so she could no longer have that salad, and couldn't modify it as there was a language barrier and neither our table nor the server were equipped with the second-language skills to clearly sort out ay issue.
Their menu has about 400 things on it, and a whole butt-load of them are vegetarian and/or vegan friendly so I was really excited. I mean, do you have any idea how hard it is to go through life without barbacoa tacos?! It's been... at the very least, torturous.
So I ordered up one of their bajillion juices called something along the lines of 'Americancerico'... I don't totally remember and I definitely am not able to pronounce it, but our server was able to decipher what I wanted when I used the old 'point-at-the-menu-and-make-a-silly-gringa-face', so it turned out aight. The juice was $7, but it's made fresh with all fruits and veggies and you can even turn it into a smoothie and it'll cost you a little less.
My veggie barbacoa taco and veggie cubano were dang good but they still didn't top El Faro on South Side for veggie-friendly Mexican eats, fresh juice, timing or prices... but they're both about the same amount of sticky. My "meat camel" coworker's burrito was like a brick, only longer. Positively HUGE, and guaranteed to clog a toilet. I didn't try it, but I made my coworker eat at least half or I wouldn't take his former (and supposed) 'Wing King' title seriously.
I think our visit was victim to being a peak hour and QLRDS being under-staffed, or we could have had a bit better of an experience. When it comes down to it, I like El Faro better, but it's way easier to get to and to park here, so I'll probably frequent this place more.
This place is mind blowing. Â I forgot I wasn't even eating meat until about halfway through - and only when my friend mentioned it. Â Their juice was so fresh, healthy, and delicious. Â I am not a vegetarian, but I am absolutely certain that when done right, I wouldn't even notice meat out of my life. Â Their burritos are humungous.
It is impressive how authentic their mexican food still tasted without using any meat. Â This is definitely one of those little local gems with charm and character that makes you happy knowing it exists and is waiting for you to come back.
I'm usually highly carnivorous when eating out, but I'm also a Logan Square Mexican food completist, and the latter outweighed the former in convincing me to check this place out.
I've been swayed, and have made this a fairly regular stop when I'm in the mood for Mexican. Why? Well, I will often have a hankering for a chorizo taco or burrito and other greasy favorites, but when I go to other places that food will sit in my stomach for hours afterwards and make me feel like, well, like I ate a bunch of greasy food that is no good for me. When I come here, the food is really good (and, in my experience comparable to the "real" versions of each meat-gredient) but doesn't leave me feeling gross afterwards. It's like someone came up with a cocktail that accomplishes all the drunkening without the inevitable hangover the next morning!
They advertise pozole on the weekend but they are inevitably sold out every time I try to order it, which must mean that either it is pretty good, or that they make it in exceedingly small quantities.
But so I have to say this four star review is really for the food, not for the overall dining experience. The dining room is BYOB, which is nice, but the service is inconsistent (not bad or rude, just not very attentive or helpful answering any questions), the TV and/or music is often pretty loud, and it really isn't a place to sit and enjoy your food. However, if you live in the neighborhood, I'd strongly recommend you try this for takeout.
This place is great. I went with a friend on a random night and we got an assortment of tacos, quesadillas, and huaraches. Only kind of creepy thing is seeing the associated meat name assigned to each dish on the menu - like 'pork skin' or 'lamb'.
Overall, loved almost everything I ate. Wasn't the biggest fan of the chorizo or the cactus one. However, I'd recommend ordering a bunch of random dishes and giving everything a shot because every dish has its own unique flavor.
The final bill was about $25 for two people, including tip. And we were stuffed. Fantastic place for both vegetarians and meat eaters.
After reading all the positive Yelp reviews, i was excited to try this place - but i was disappointed. Chips and salsa were OK, but nothing special, and the vegan Mexican dishes didn't have much flavor, and the ingredients did not taste fresh.
Had to add a bunch of hot sauce to be able to eat the food here. Â I was hungry and did not finish my food which is very rare for me for a Mexican place. Â Also, we had some major communication issues, as indicated by some of the other reviewers. Â Not a big deal for a normal Mexican place but for vegan, it needs to be better.
If you are vegan, this place might be worth a shot but I would not use it as a substitute for a regular Mexican place.
Vegan Mexican place... wow that's new!!
Its a very divey kind of a place... good food with fast food kinda prices. You are served tortilla chips with salsa... 3 kinds of salsas!! We ordered the 'steak' taco and the chicken tinga quesadilla. The food was very flavorful... but what I loved most was the home made corn tortillas... they are home made, soft, thick and super-flavorful. They get full marks for that!
There is only ONE reason this place is getting two stars and not closer to four.
But you should know that the food was decent/good. I had the al pastor tacos which I found really tasty and well flavored (read: very close to the real thing) and even prepared with pineapple which I think is key. The beans were flavorful, but the rice was a bit bland.
My non-veg friend had the quesadillas, which were huge (she ordered two not knowing), but she wasn't a fan of the tortillas they used. I didn't try them, but it looks like it may be some kind of whole or multi-grain flour.
Our service was fine. Water and chips and salsas (three) came quickly as did the food.
OK, so my POINT OF CONTENTION is that when we were done, she came over with a lovely plate of cupcakes. They were small (not mini, just average in comparison to fancy bakery cupcakes) and came in three flavors. Thinking they were complimentary, we both had one.
They were not free and in fact, $2.50 a piece. While worth the money had I actually wanted to spend it, I felt duped.
I feel like they're banking on the fact that most people are too modest to ask "are these free"? especially when they are presented as such.
I assume I'll be back here on account that I'm a new vegetarian who likes to eat out.
Still, I found it to be very poor form.
I have been a vegan for about twelve years and for a long time stuck with a couple of places...The Chicago Diner, Karyns and Handlebar for mixed eaters :) Â BUT since moving to West Bucktown (or whatever the nom du jour is :) I was blown away to discover authentic VEGAN Mexican Cuisine....I go here all of the time. Â It is completely reasonable, the people are fantastics...I LOOOOOVEE the cupcakes and I haven't had a meal that disappoints yet! Â PLUS i hear they are supposedly starting breakfast...I haven't had a good vegan breakfast in a long time and when I do I will report back!! Â Just have patience when you go as it is a small operation that attracts quite the following! Â DEFINITELY worth the wait!!!
Review Source:I wanted to love this place and was super excited by all of the great reviews, but didn't think it lived up to the hype. Â Everything we ordered was just "meh" Â -- the chips tasted store-bought, the guac and tortilla soup were bland and the cuban torta was over chili-powdered. Â
That all being said, I WOULD recommend this spot if you are in the neighborhood late night, tipsy, and in need some vegan junk food. Â I will also try it again in the future to test out their salads and juices; maybe their healthy options will change my mind!
I moved back home to Chicago in January and after finally re-adjusting and establishing a new relationship with my hometown, I love my hometown again :) And of course one of the reasons I love it ... Â is places like this.
Im getting my weight down now after beginning to recover from military injuries years back and woww !!! I can't say enough about how happy I was to finally eat here and realize there is vegan friendly mexican food that's health conscious and weight loss friendly. I mean tacos that LOWER your cholesterol? Are you kidding me !!! (Yes, I am that excited)
i had the xochimilco and barbacoa and they were incredible. The tacos were all soya, tortillas were soft and filling and the standard chips n salsa appetizer rocked. Â 3 kinds of salsa !!! Â The daiya cheese was awesome too. Tasty ... Â and again ... eating mexican and knowing you're improving your health is priceless. And to top it off, the food was spicy too and I love me some spicy food. So now I have a new place to hit up for an afternoon 3rd meal / snack AND Â exercise my Spanish. (The last time I went w/out speaking it for awhile it wasn't pretty)
The atmosphere is awesome too. It really shows the diversity of this neighborhood which was just a really cool thing to take in while we were eating. Two mexican dudes w modelos chiilin and grubbin' on comfort food, hipsters, a very nice couple, and then me , a single dad with a 6 and 10 year old in tow who were loving the organic smoothies. Yayy !!!
I really loved this place and I'm totally glad we came here after reading so many great reviews. I have no complaints and I really recommend this place. We will definitely be back!!!!
This place makes me happy! Â Everything I've had on the menu so far: torta's, juices, and taco's has always been delicious and reminds me of my TBK days. Â This place will stave off any authentic mexican desires I have. Â The only problem is the wacky hours they have. Â The fact that aren't open on Saturday's angers me, mostly because, that's the only possible day I could make it to Chicago and sometimes I forget that and make the trip to Quesdilla only to find they are closed. Â I remember once a upon a time they were open on Saturdays and that is why I keep making this mistake.
* Please note that Q buys their vegan cupcakes from another company so don't blame Q if the cupcakes are a little dry. Â They might reconsider were they buy their baked goods from.
Yummy, yummy, yummy I got love in my tummy. Seriously, I sing this every time I leave this place.
The DH and I discovered this lovely restaurant a month and a half ago, when we decided to go vegetarian, and I'm super sad I had not discovered this place a long time ago.
I'm a simple gal, so a taco, rice and beans do the trick. I also tried the mole tamale, but wasn't a huge fan - this is only because I discovered right then and there I do not like the taste of mole.
The only con, which is more my problem than the restaurant's, they don't accept debit, only cash. But no worries, there are several ATMs nearby.
Visit this place soon!
This place is authentic as it gets for vegans and vegetarians. Â People who complain about not having more on their tacos besides onion and cilantro are greatly misinformed on a traditional taqueria. Â Quesadilla has approximately 10 different types of faux meat, my favorite is the barbacoa. Â
If you want amazing authentic vegan/vegetarian Mexican food, you have come to the right place. Â For vegans, they have daiya cheese for the quesadillas. Â I'm not much for quesadillas, so I generally stick to the tacos, which are by far the BEST!
Also if this is your first time here, it may be a little confusing on how you should be seated and such. Â
So here are some tips
- you seat yourself
- it is BYOB (no corkage fee)
- when you are ready to pay, go up to the register and you pay there
This restaurant carves a unique niche where vegetarian meets quality Mexican fare.
Regarding the vegetarian, it would appear the meat replacement is texturized vegetable protein which works well although it seems to give everything about the same consistency and texture. Not a criticism but an observation. And the Mexican preparation of this food is top quality without too much oil or salt. No major postprandial thirst or water retention from over-salted foods.
The tortilla that holds their quesadillas and huaraches is thick and textured with a good taste to itself. Like the debates over deep dish vs thin crust pizza, some people will love this kind of tortilla while others not so much. But it certainly doesn't fall apart and the quesadilla can be eaten with fork/knife.
The menu is extensive running the gamut of Mexican fast food fare including tacos, tortas burritos. Don't miss the tamales on the back page of the menu. Rice and (veggie) beans were excellent sides. Â They also offer a full list of juices/smoothies.
Service was excellent on this weeknight at 8:30PM but the place was still busy. I can see where the 10 table restaurant can get crowded quickly and tables won't turn that often. They are closed on Saturday in the summer (the sign on the door and menu say).
Excellent restaurant and worth a try and probably should be part of your regular rotation.
Seriously good Mexican (veg/vegan) food. I came here on a much anticipated dinner with some friends, and boy, did Quesadilla live up to my expectations!
My friend had been wanting to come here on a Friday for a long time, since the special is Chilaquiles, so I decided to go with those (vegetarian-style). What a good decision. If you ever do get a chance to come here on Friday, get them! They also come with rice and beans, both flavorful and delicious. The Chilaquiles were very tasty, and surprisingly spicy. I love spicy food, so it was just fine by me. Their tacos are great, as well. I actually didn't even miss meat the entire dinner!
If you are in the mood for some comforting Mexican food, head over to Quesadilla La Reyna del Sur. I suggest calling before you head out there, though, because their hours do vary for dinner.
I am writing this from deep inside of a food coma, one that I willingly brought on because I simply could not stop eating this delicious food. Tonight was our first, but most definitely not our last, time at Quesadilla. I mean, OMG.
I had the mole special-best mole sauce I've ever had, and I really love mole-and my husband ordered a lot of tacos. We also shared the 'silueta' juice, and I got an horchata to go. Everything was incredibly flavorful and fresh. The staff, although a little slow to greet us with water and chips, was very friendly and otherwise attentive.
This place is a gem. Go there. Love it. You're welcome.
My son's school is so close to this place, and I have driven by it numerous times. What was I thinking???? Why didn't I get here sooner?! For awhile now, I have been trying to avoid meat as a personal health choice but its quite hard because I crave meat on and off. Â Nothing really has enticed me in the vegetarian world that has given me substance aside from portabella mushrooms. Â To have Mexican food without meat seems unreal. Could it be good? I decided to pop in last Friday and have some lunch before running my afternoon errands.
Service was quick and friendly. The place was starting to get a bit busy for one girl to be manning the front. Â When I told the girl working there that I was going to sit there and eat, she was curteous and prompt with chips and salsa at my table. Â SWEET!
I tried 2 of their vegan tacos. Â The Garibaldi and the Pastor taco. I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty these soy based tacos were. Â More importantly, I was Uber duber impressed at the Pastor taco. It was spot on in flavor and the spicy-ness of the tacos were amazing. I loved the flavors of both tacos and viewed the menu in more detail to see what other food options they have.
I saw a quesadilla with pumpkin flowers! WOW i need to get my hands on that next time. Â Home made natural juices? Double wow! need to get my hands on that too!
For dessert, I treated myself to their vegan cupcakes from Azucar Vegan Cupcakes and sweets. Another nice impression. I tried the Colombiano, a coffee cupcake that satisfied my sweet tooth. Â
Im going to have my daughter try this place as she loves good flavored vegatarian food. MEXICAN VEGETARIAN FOOD?!!!! HORALE! She's going to flip!
Hands down tasty.
Good with room for improvement.
I was there on a Tuesday evening on the way to the movies. I was a little hungry and decided to stop around here to grab a bite. I had seen this place before but never made it a destination. There were a few restaurants close but decided to check this one out. Luck ??? destiny???? Na, I don't think so. We just parked right in front of the restaurant and we didn't want to walk.
So long story short, get there, get seated, check the menu order. The waitress was super super nice.
We had a quesadilla with asada and mushrooms, tinga burrito, fruit juice and horchata. Everything was good but lacked that shock of flavor that Mexican food is known for. The Horchata was fresh but lacked a little more sweet and cinnamon. Quesadilla and burrito same story. I am not vegetarian but about 50% of my meals are so I'm used to vegetarian food. The tinga was good but lacked that punch of flavor, more onions and more chipotle maybe (or maybe that is just the way I like it because that is the way I make it).
Any way the place is small and simple, and again the service is super nice. Prices are comparable to similar restaurants.
QLRS, good but that little extra but make it great.
So excited to find this place! I am a strict vegetarian who works in Pilsen and who feels deprived of great Mexican food every day. Found out about this place online and finally tried it today...so worth the drive for me. I get a little excited when I have more than one menu option, so I about jumped for joy when looking at the menu.
I had the steak taco with nopales and one soy chicken taco with nopales. They were both fantastic! Had a strawberry kiwi juice/smoothie which was perfect on the side.great guacamole and fiery hot (but uniquely tasty salsas).
One warning, though. its a small place so I checked before we left if they take debit/credit cards. They do, but its a $10 minimum. I had to buy an extra can of pop as I didn't have cash. Stop at to ATM before you go as food for just you will definitely be under $10.
Holy crap this place is awesome. Â I love that several Mexican restaurants around the country are starting to jump on the vegan trend, and I heard Quesadilla La Reyna del Sur was a fairly new joint in Chicago, so I checked it out on my trip there and was so glad I did.
I got three chorizo tacos with cheese and cilantro and that plus the chips and salsa were more than filling and delicious. Â My lady got the shredded chicken quesadilla and loved it as well. Â And altogether it was only $13! Â Good luck finding value like that anywhere else.
Next time I'm in Chicago I'll definitely be coming back, and also to try the horchata and smoothies.
Vegan/Veggie mexican?! Â 100%?? Â NO WAY!!
I thought i died and went to heaven....
went here on a random wednesday night, place was decently busy, there was only 1 lady there running the show which you could tell she was a bit overwhelmed, until help arrived about an hour later.
The fresh fruit juice bar is outstanding
and the food...OMG...i couldnt even decide what to get!
The veggie soy chorizo was great and so was the veggie sheep (who knew there was veggie sheep?!)
I also had the quesadilla with marinated chicken and that was outstanding as well
2 people, 2 juice drinks, 2 tacos each and a quesadilla to split, total was about 25 bucks not bad.
it is a BYOB and theres a liquor store across the street incase you wanted to mix your juice drink with a little rum or tequila
street parking is super easy and Free!!
fantastic place
will be back for sure
If you have been to any of the predominantly Mexican grocery stores in the city you might have noticed the big bags of Pork/Chicken/Steak 'extender' AKA TVP (textured vegetable protein). You are a fool if you think that when you go out to any little Mexican restaurant that it's not at least 1/2 of what you are eating. Â
Quesadilla... is like all the other random hole-in-the-wall Mexican places around the city EXCEPT that they left out all the animal flesh. I can tell you without a doubt that that's why it 'seems' so cheap. Their 'meat' costs pennies. Most of the cost is in cheese and faux cheese.
So no, you are not going to get a taco stuffed with fresh veggies and 'healthy options'. You will get a taco overflowing with flavorful meaty chunks and salty faux-cheese plus the standard green and red salsa. As a bonus there is another salsa that looks a lot like pico with tons of hot peppers. That one is by far my favorite.
Unfortunately I still eat meat from time to time. The more places like this that I find, the easier it is to stop. At the end of the day we all just crave those chewy salty hunks and Quesadilla La RDS definitely knows how to deliver them.
As a new transplant to Chicago from California, I am desperately in search of a place that can provide just a facsimile of what the Mecca of Mexican food has to offer. So far, I have tasted a few pitiful attempts at commercialized cuisine which literally elicited hissy fits at their awfulness. I'm not proud of this fact, but apparently I have rewritten my DNA to require massive amounts of black beans and green chile.
When I found this place a block and a half from my friend's apartment, I had to try it. She had never visited the restaurant, so we met at the liquor store across the street and moseyed over. The restaurant was simple in seating. Maybe a little too simple. When we sat down at our first table, the weight of our forearms nearly toppled the table. To its credit, this place has a wide selection of vegetarian faux meats. It was refreshing to see a place with soy-based chicken and steak.
I order a chicken super burrito with black beans. They don't have black beans. What do you mean you don't have black beans? I thought this was a Mexican restaurant, not Southeast Asia. Seriously, though, what is the deal with Chicago Mexican places not having black beans? So I got the burrito sans beans.
The burrito was MASSIVE. I have seen my fair share of super burritos and this one could choke an elephant. However, what it had in size it lacked in complexity. There was basically just shredded lettuce as the other topping. Where's the salsa? Where's the guac? Where's the sour cream? What about some more vegetables? And how long do I have to wait for my Jarritos?
Overall, this place was disappointing. A quality burrito would be better than this quantity of the bare essentials to call something a burrito. But if you are looking for a vegetarian friendly place in an area with that authentic cracked-out aesthetic but without the danger, this is the place for you!
I have been to this place multiple times. I love it! Sometimes, I will order a veggie steak taco and look at my husband's and they look the absolute same. The service is kind and fast and I can not get enough of the food!
Now here is the true test of this place. The first time that I went to the place I went with my husband. He ordered a chorizo taco and I ordered tamales. I asked him how it was and he said, "Chorizo is chorizo. Can't mess it up." Meaning, he did not know that it was not meat. My second test was taking a couple of my meat-eating friends to this place and they LOVED it! Two were Mexican and one was a simple meat-eater. They enjoyed the food and did not know the difference.
If you get the chance, I highly recommend this place! You can drive there. . . free street parking and just a couple of blocks from the blue line Northern Western stop. Enjoy!
Okay so my fiance and I went to this place Sunday because we wanted Mexican food and since we are transitioning from flexitarian (me) and carnivore (him) to vegan we decided to give it a try. Everything on the menu (from what I can remember) was vegan friendly.
I had an asada torta which was pretty big and it was pretty good, Â it had beans, a good amount of avocado and lettuce, I give it a 4. The fiance had 3 tacos, which were all pretty good my favorite was the chorizo, overall the tacos get another 4. They have a pretty nice varieties of juices, we just didn't try any.
We did have a cupcake, the coconut one and it was pretty good that gets a 4.5 in my books. Overall the food was good and I will definitely visit the place again, this time I'll try their juices and I'll get a chorizo torta and a chocolate cupcake.
I don't know what I was expecting from this place but it was all very confusing for awhile. Â After eating the food though, you can look past most of the awkwardness.
Things to note:
- It's BYOB
- They sell fresh squeezed juices but the prices were blacked out so we figured it was pricey and we brought out own margarita mix with tequila and no one seemed to have a problem with that.
- You'll have to ask for ice about fourteen times.
- That salsa is SPICY.
- It has a walk-up/take-out counter and one girl manning that and the tables in the dining area which makes for a somewhat disorganized service.
- There aren't just vegetarian/vegan OPTIONS, it's ONLY vegetarian/vegan. Â No meat at all.
Our waitress was really nice, super quiet, kind of timid to the point of looking freightened most of the time. Â She spilled another table's drink and I think that put her over the edge. Â Meh, we all have those days. Â She took our entire table of seven's order from one end of a very long table so we weren't sure she was going to get all of it but she did good, we all got what we ordered. Â Or at least I think so, I mean soy meat is soy meat, right?
I got the Garibaldi Huaraches, it's basically a cross between a taco and a burrito. Â It's open like a taco but the size of a burrito, crazy. Â Everything was really good though, the tortilla was thick and chewy and awesome. Â Heard the tamales were pretty outstanding too even though I didn't personally try any.
Total for our group of seven was $75, not joking. Â I'd probably order for takeout if I was closer and skip the dining in but the food (from a meat loving gal) is pretty amazing.
Can't say enough good things. It's my new fave place. The 3 salsas they bring you with chips are all fantastic, and there are a ton of different varieties of vegan tacos that come heartily stuffed with all yer fixins. I always get the "chicken" and cactus (who knew I liked cactus?? Didn't even know it was edible before coming here.)
It's BYOB, the service is extremely warm, friendly, fast and attentive. Parking is easy, free street parking. AND it's CHEAP! I just dined in and enjoyed the chips and salsas with 2 vegan tacos and my bill was $4.94. Crazy! I'm in love.
YES
THIS PLACE IS INCREDIBLE
As a vegetarian, I've never had so many taco options. As I stood before the dozen-odd choices, each one more tempting than the next, I swear a tear might've been brought to my eye.
I rocked an al pastor and a chorizo taco and both were phenomenal. The al pastor was sweet and salty, the chorizo spicy and savory. Even my carnivore brother, who generally isn't into fake meats, was surprised at how good they were (he got a chorizo huarache).
Logan Square, folks. We're totally killing it. Other neighborhoods tremble before our radness.
Chicago has an unusually high number of extremely innovative and vegan-friendly Mexican businesses (Quesadilla, Azucar Bakery, La Cocina Logan Square, El Nuevo, and El Faro), beating out pretty much any other city. Quesadilla is the best of the bunch. This is a wonderful, mostly vegan Mexican joint run by a family from Mexico. As such, no complaints about the food being "inauthentic"---the food here is prepared with care and freshness.
Their "tinga" taco was fabulous and really cheap at less than $3 a piece---wonderfully spiced soy chicken and a simple garnish of cilantro and onions. This is exactly how a taco is served in Mexico, meaning open-face, and just meat and garnish. No beans, lettuce, cheese or whatever else.
Most of their tacos were good, but I think the tinga was the best, and the beef ones were a bit less flavorful.
The guacamole, however, wasn't quite as good as the tacos. It felt flat in terms of taste (maybe not enough cilantro and tomato?) and it was also much more expensive than anything else on the menu, despite being an appetizer.
Lastly, the chocolate cupcake (made by Azucar Bakery, a vegan Mexican bakery) was solid: moist, not too sweet, and nicely rich in chocolate flavor.
I can't wait to return to Quesadilla.
Absolutely delicious Mexican food with vegan variety - not just beans and rice, all for a great price. 3 for $5 tamales, huge torta sandwiches wide a variety of "meat" choices and wonderful smoothie style drinks - they also have my favorite Jamiaca.
I was not a fan of the cupcakes that were made by another company and sold here, they were small and dry - not tasty.
Everything else was delicious.
There aren't that many places in the USA where, when you order a quesadilla, the first question you're asked is whether you'd like regular or vegan cheese. Everything on the menu is either vegetarian, or, if you like, vegan. Pretty cool for a Mexican restaurant. I didn't find the flavors of the soy protein to be overly compelling (unlike, say, Soul Vegetarian) but they provide you with two excellent salsas that certainly make up the difference. I'd say your best value is to go with the tacos, They're huge, inexpensive, and come in a variety of styles. Plus, you'll get a very filling meal for well under $10.
It's pretty much all counter service and very friendly. I'd certainly take any vegan or vegetarian friend here if we were in the area. This restaurant deserves to succeed.
HOLY CRAP, I cannot even believe this place exists. I only wish it was closer to my apartment. Â The only "vegetarian" dishes on most mexican restaurant menus are either all-cheese, or a combination of peppers, onions, and mushrooms (none of which I'm a fan of). So yeah, this place is like a dream come true for me. No exaggeration. When I found out this place existed, I couldn't get there fast enough.
The food was GREAT. I got 3 tacos: Asada de soya (soy-based steak), Tinga (soy-based shredded marinated chicken), and Pollo de soya (soy-based chicken). All 3 were excellent, and had distinctly different flavors. Surprisingly juicy and perfectly seasoned. Â I was a bit bummed to discover that they didn't put cheese on the tacos, but they were still delicious without it, and I know to ask for it next time. Â The rice was a bit disappointing (not much flavor at all), but the tacos totally made up for it :) Â My husband got the Pollo de soya torta (soy-based chicken), which was also delicious.
I couldn't believe how many different "meat" options they had. I can't wait to go back and try the rest!
Oh, and did I mention it's CHEAP? We both ate for $21 (including the tip).
Great food. Â Great prices. Â Many options like veggie sheep, veggie pork skin, and huitlacoche. Â Vegan cheese available as well, which is great. Â So many Mexican restaurants think that cow-cheese-heavy vegetarian dishes are enough to satisfy the veg*n community, and that only goes so far. Â It's nice to see a place go that small extra step.
An omnivorous friend commented that meat substitutes, such as soy pork, should not be labelled "pork" unless they actually taste like that. Â He said it's fine to have them, he just had a problem with the label. Â Well, after a trip here, he admitted to have finally found a vegan pork that was good enough for the label.
And don't forget that street parking on Western is FREE.
For all the parents out there: Â They have two kinds of high chairs, but no changing tables.
Went here for the first time this weekend and I loved their soy meat tacos and quesadillas. I'm glad they offered vegan cheese as an option. The waitresses were very kind and the prices weren't bad at all.
I don't understand why certain yelpers give "Quesadilla La Reyna del Sur" a bad rating for no longer being "El Ojo de Agua"..the place doesn't exist..let it be! Also, if you don't like "fake meat" don't even bother on commenting...as a vegan, I don't go around commenting on restaurants that serve meat.
