um, gross.
i went here with two of my girl friends and all of our meals were terrible....not to mention so was the staff and service. The sushi rolls tasted way too fishy and were def not right. we told our server very nicely that something wasn't right with the rolls and she just kind of ran off with it and never took it off the bill. my other friend got pad thai and it smelled like wet dog and had no flavor. how do you mess something that safe up?! the only thing that was good were the chive wontons, which i would actually order again, but i'm never going back to that place.
bad service. bad food. bad experience.
Worst experience ever.
I love byob sushi & I've never been to this place, so I was excited to try something new. My two girlfriends & I had no problem getting a reservation, which is always a plus in my book. However, it didn't take long to understand why this place wasn't busy on a Friday night.
We started off with the chive wontons which were actually really good. I got the spicy tuna, which is my go to staple when I don't want to spend a ton on a fancy roll. Also, it was 'recommended' by yelp users, so I figured I couldn't go wrong. My friends got the shrimp tempura roll & the pad thai.
Both sushi rolls tasted extremely fishy. Like gross fishy- the fish must've been bad. I never send food back, but when it comes to fish, better safe than sorry. It took a half hour for our waitress to even come back to the table after she brought the food. When she saw we didn't eat the rolls, she proceeded to ask us if we wanted a box, and didn't seem to get that we didn't like the rolls. At this point it had been so long we just wanted to leave without ordering anything else. When she brought us the bill, she still charged us for the two rolls we didn't even eat. We spent the next 15 minutes unsuccessfully trying to flag down another employee, who were all obviously trying to ignore us.
After they finally gave us our bill without the two rolls, the manager came up to us to ask us what was wrong. She was beyond rude. When we told her the sushi didn't taste right-- too fishy, she asked us if we've ever had sushi before. Seriously? So so rude.
Unless you'd like to leave hungry with a headache, do yourself a favor and go anywhere else.
It was good enough to try again. I only tried the grilled calamari appetizer & beef pad see ew. They were both good. Not great, just good. Next time I'll try sushi.
Parking = paid meter on the street if you can find it
Wifi = You can use Barnes & Noble wifi signal.
Oh yeah, the Yelp ad was expired.
This place just barely fufills your craving for thai food. Â The pad-thai is a bit rubbery and not the best. Â The lunch special is cheap and good for what you are given. Â I would not necessarily go here again unless it was lunch time and i NEEDED sushi. Â and plus, its across the street from barnes, so it's nice and convenient.
Review Source:I'm so glad that I stumbled across this place. Â They have an informative, friendly staff that I relied on heavily to get my order right. Â If you're a smart phone yelper, make sure you check in to get a 15% discount. Â That said, their lunch special is even better... all sushi rolls 50% off.
I got 6pc California Roll, 6pc Spicy Tuna roll, and a Thai Iced Tea all for less than $10. Â The best part of this lunch special that made my small bill possible is that they offer it Monday through Saturday. Â Not a lot of places offer that sort of deal on a weekend.
Overall, I recommend Rock Wrap & Roll not just for the name, but for great deals and quality service.
Quite possibly the worst delivery experience I have ever had. They quoted me an hour and 15 mins for delivery and they were 1/2 hour late. This wouldn't have been so bad had I not had to be at work. I called several times and was told each time that the order was "on it's way" which essentially tells me nothing. When it finally arrived it was missing an item and all of the hot items were inedible and cold. The miso soup tasted like room temperature water. Â Also, the spicy tuna tasted very fishy (in a bad way) and didn't have a hint of spice to it.
Review Source:Had a philly roll, chicken pad thai, and chicken fried rice. It was all fine but not great. The pad thai could have had a little more flavor- it was actually better as left overs the next day. I'm pretty sure the peas and carrots in the fried rice came from a bag of frozen veggies. Overall experience was ok- but not rushing back. Maybe that's what you get from a restaurant trying to serve all types of Asian food- jack of all trades, master of none.
Review Source:Great Sushi BYO place!! Â The menu has both Thai and Japanese dishes but I've only has the sushi. Â Fresh and very wide selection. Â I've been a few times and the place is comfortably crowded so you don't feel like the only one in there but there is never a wait. I would recommend for date night, girls night or a group event.
Review Source:Met the girls from Italy here last night for dinner. Â + AJ Â (2+ yr old cutie pie with a penchant for chicken stay, gyoza and jasmine rice).
We let Ms. La Belle Saindon do the ordering and she whipped up a doozy:
Seaweed salad to share
Sweet potato rolls
T & T rolls (spicy tuna yeee haw)
Honeybee roll (sweet and spicy deliciousness with cream cheese)
Dragon roll (our standard order)
Salmon and See rolls (cilantro)
Green tea ice cream for AJ and they brought us an extra one on the house, nice!
Great service. Â Fresh, attractive sushi. Â When I checked into Rock via the iPhone YELP app, I got a 15% discount coupon. Â Thank you YELP and Rock. Â :)
Rock Wrap & Only a cool name.
This place tastes like most of the food came from a Trader Joe's frozen dinner. The pad thai tasted like peanut butter mixed with Ramen noodles. The edamame was barely salted and steamed just until it was barely not rubber. Â The service was atrocious. The only thing giving this a second star was the price was reasonable. Definitely stay away from this place if you're looking for good Asian food.
Sushi? Â sushi? Â did someone say sushi? Â yes they have sushi, and so much more! Â These guys do a really great job, they have some amazing appetizers, noodles, and some really awesome sushi. Â They prep there salmon in a way that it is smooth and creamy, never had anything like it. Â Virgin bride roll is the way to go! Â BYOB is really fun, especially when my wife and i put away a whole bottle of muscato with dinner, its always a fun walk home. Â This place is great, cant say enough. Â excellent decor, friendly service, great for before or after a movie.
Review Source:I brought my girlfriend here for her birthday last Thursday because the place had caught my eye while driving down Clybourn the week before. The hostess seemed a little bitter as she sat us but it was nothing too ridiculous. Shortly after arriving the other couple in the restaurant headed out and we had the place all to ourselves until about 8:30pm when business suddenly picked up.
There was no hassle with the BYOB as the kind waitress quickly brought us a corkscrew and some glasses while we looked over the menu. There was a good selection of both Thai and Japanese dishes. The restaurant has a nice feel and good ambiance too.
The only drawback was that they had the radio on the music system and we had to sit through what seemed like an interminable and very loud commercial break before I politely requested that they put a CD on or something. The waitress shyly said that the radio was on and that it was just commercials (no, really?) but a little while after she talked to the hostess they put on a techno/trance CD which, although cheesy, was much better to listen to than ads for mattresses.
We ordered some Goyza (standard but good) and my girlfriend ordered some Tom Kha soup to start with. I'm not a big fan of Thai/coconut based soups but she urged me to try it and I will admit that it was pretty tasty. We ordered the Beatle Roll and the Dragon Roll and both were pretty good. Not the best sushi, but worth the price.
So yeah, it was really an a-ok experience. I'm not sure we'd come back. Maybe If we came with a group and if they stopped letting commercials blast on the radio.
This place has been on list. Â Had it tonight...actually had it up to here with Thai wild down the street. Â This place is much better. Â Egg rolls better, noodle plates more meat more flavor, fried rice more veggies, free shrimp tempura... Free.....can actually take order.. Done with Thai wild.... You guys win
Review Source:I'm at this place at least 5 times a month. The food is consistently good, Sushi if fresh and the Staff are friendly. It's between my office and home, so I call ahead if I don't want to eat in , and it's always ready to pick up when I arrive. When I dine in , I've noticed the same people on a regular basis. So I guess there are others that like it as much as I do.
I normally stick with the basic's, Â Sushi rolls but saw different items on the menu and gave them a try. Now I have some new fav's. Thanks Rock Wrap and Roll :)
Had dinner here last night with my boyfriend and cousin, and it was delicious! We had a Groupon Now, which we had no problem using. Service could have been a little quicker, as our order wasn't taken until 15 minutes after being seated. However, the decor and ambiance was very relaxing and modern.
Sushi was great (had the Philadelphia) and crab rangoons as appetizer. My boyfriend enjoyed his chicken pad thai, and my cousin had the Futo maki. All delicious!
Didn't know it was BYOB until we saw the sign on the door. Wish we had known, though 7-11 is right next door. Definitely a perk!
My boyfriend and I came here to eat before seeing a movie. We walked in, was barely greeted by this bitter, pissed-off looking woman who probably hated her life at that moment. I almost asked if she was okay.
Then we were greeted by a really friendly server. Except she was very confused the entire time. She had me repeat things a lot (I hate that) and she was just generally lost. Didn't really know how to do her job that well.
Sushi wise, we just ordered sashimi a la carte - the cuts of fish were fine, they were fresh but not high quality. The cuts were very small. The sweet shrimp (amaebi) fried heads + nigiri were great though. we had some seaweed salad but i think the dressing was a little too sour for me and my boyfriends taste. It was a little off, not really sure if it was fresh enough or what.
I won't be back but if anyone goes, I suggest looking for their groupon now deal.
It took 15-20 minutes for them to receive the delivery order through GrubHub, and another 90 minutes to actually deliver the food. By the time it arrived, the sushi tasted stale and was warm. Gross. I imagine that old fish, being heated up by the chicken pad thai (in the same bag) for over an hour was probably the primary issue.
These were very basic rolls - including a Philadelphia roll. Pretty hard to screw up, but they definitely found a way.
The chicken pad thai was pretty terrible as well - another easy dish.
I'd definitely shy away from this place.
I'll try to keep this one short.
The space is really nice. The service is excellent. However, we were the only table in the restaurant that night - so I wouldn't expect much less. The sushi was delish. Fresh, flavorful and lovely presentation.
Unfortunately, our calamari starter was way overcooked and extremely tough. The Clay Pot Lover, one of the Chef's Specialties, shrimp, clear noodles and mixed veggies served in a clay pot with special sauce - this dish was laughable. The portion was extremely small for $16. There was absolutely no sauce, much less a special sauce! It was a few veggies, a palm of clear noodles and four small shrimp served in a pot. Not at all worth the $16 price tag.
We will know to stick to the sushi next time.
On a Friday night everyone met up after work at a friend's place near by this spot. Usually 6 people can never come to a sound decision on what we all feel like doing, yet miraculously we all agreed to try this byob place. We picked up some wine and walked in expecting on a Friday night to wait, but no the stars aligned once more and they were able to seat us instantly!
We all ordered some edamame to share, yummy. Then we each ordered something different, having eaten sushi the day before I went with a Thai platter - pad woon sen, others got the pad thai, pad see eiew and a couple sushi rolls - we had to try each others because everything looked so good and it all was amazing! We were impressed with the outcome of the night. Definitely would bring others back here, hopefully soon cause I just got hungry writing this!
My husband and I tried Rock out for the first time. Decor is modern, funky, and cool...Staff was friendly and helpful. Plus, we love the combo of Sushi and Thai awesome for us-- I like Thai and my husband loves sushi. Unlike other places that only do one cuisine well, this place was able to please both of us. Sushi was fresh and artful. My noodles excellent!
This is going to become a regular for us. Finally a place we can both agree on.
Price - reasonable
Food - very fresh & very good
service - very friendly / cozy / fast
come back - for sure
love the place / the service .. excellent combination Thai and Sushi
fish is very fresh great for sashimi & special rolls ..  love their grilled squid & calamari  .. Kuay teaw reua & lad nar is awesome
Where's my free shrimp roll? We ordered from RWR to try something different for once. We frequent and love Anong on California. It was nice to find an Asian place with a salad. I was more than disappointed. My salad was the size of a McDonalds side salad, my boyfriends' entire entree fit in the smallest take out box on earth (pasta and all, it was actually more like wallpaper paste), it took forever, and the free shrimp roll with an order of $30 or more didn't show up. Yes, my side salad, kids meal, and two appetizers was like $45 with tip. I'll stick to what I know in the future.
P.S. I joined Yelp to write this. It was that serious.
PPS. If you want a great Thai/Japanese place, go to Sanook on Irving Park. Thank me later.
I have eaten here a few times for lunch now and so far, I love it! Not only are they a great addition to the lunch options in the area, but the sushi is fresh, the noodles are tasty, the service is friendly and the prices are decent. The restaurant itself is small, yet adorable and clean. I highly recommend it!
Review Source:A great find for authentic & updated Thai/ sushi!! They have a very friendly staff, chic decor & cheap, yummy lunch specials!! My favorite was the "boat noodle" soup. It was rich & spicy with quality brisket, but everything we had was very fresh and well presented.
I have to stop my self from calling in food every time I pass by!
We took our kids since it was both Thai and Japanese thinking they'd find something they'd like and so would we. That happened and more - our son ordered the chicken lemon salad and our daughter got the chicken teriyaki - both delicious. We also ordered some rolls and chicken satay which my husband thought was the best he ever had. The prices were fair and since it's walking distance from our house, so we'll definitely be back!
Review Source:Excellent food, great value, very nice space, and extremely friendly/helpful staff. Â Also, it's byob.
My gf and I went here for lunch today and had a great experience. Â We had an appetizer, 2 entrees, 1 maki roll, and a fried banana + ice cream dessert, all were very tasty (yes, we pigged out a bit...). Â It's pretty obvious they pay much attention to detail and presentation also. Â All of the food LOOKED just as good as it tasted, which is saying quite a bit. Â My favorites were the Kuay Teaw Reua Noodles (a bit like Pho) and the fried banana dessert. Â At lunch time their wraps are only $4 so I will have to try those next. Â Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I fall within their delivery radius considering I don't really live anywhere near the restaurant.
All in all it was a very good experience and I don't hesitate to recommend.
The thai is good- specifically the pannaag curry. However, I ordered spicy tuna TNT roll and the Hamachi with scallion and the fish still had skin on it and it was fatty. They did take it off the bill- food service. It's a cute byob Japanese / thai place but I don't think I'd go again.
Review Source:I recently went here for a girls' night and we had an absolute blast. Â
This BYOB joint's decor is classy and subtle but still totally fun (they have a whole wall of this CB2 mirror that I have wanted for YEARS).
The regular sushi rolls are incredibly affordable (about $6) and the maki are a bit more, but they are HUGE. Â I was so impressed with the quality of ingredients! Â We had the edamame and gyoza appetizers, which I really enjoyed. Â I heard rumblings at the table that the edamame was a bit overdone, but I couldn't tell.
The ladies who were working the room were so sweet. Â They even brought out a gratis chef's special! Â It was so delicious. Â Everything was just really thoughtfully prepared and fresh and lovely.
We definitely plan on going to a girls' night there again sometime soon.
This place is new and I am afraid that once people find out it will be busy all the time so I almost didn't want to review. Â It is quick and fresh and great service. The sushi is awesome, the other asian fare is good but not great, have tried the lettuce wraps, chicken fried rice and miso soup. Â Alll were good and seemed healthy, like not overly greasy or anything. Â The sushi is super fresh and super good, hamachi, tuna, salmon all great. Â Not cheap though. Â Clean, nice design, right across the street from Webster movie theater.
Review Source:Agree. Â Portions are tiny. Â Almost ridiculously so.
This is my neighborhood and I really want this place to succeed. Â The food seems beautiful.... a notch above most asian places. Â
However, we live about 100 yards from the restaurant and we ordered delivery. Â The delivery person called twice completely confused and unable to locate us. Â At one point she said "I'm at 1107 N......." Â Well we live at 1208 N..... Â You really can't figure that out?
I hope they get their act together. Â In the meantime, don't do take out!
Sweet, well-meaning service in a clean, updated space. Dishes were beautifully plated, but portions were meager compared to other ethnic eateries.
The place seems to have a split Japanese/Thai menu. Why-why-why I ask? Why do so many restaurants in Chicago lump Asian food together like this?!
We ordered strictly off of the Thai portion of the menu; two bowls of tom kha, and two different curries.
I'd have to say that it was a very interesting interpretation of Thai food. The dishes weren't authentic or traditional - flavors were a bit undeveloped - but everything was fine. I wasn't over-or-underwhelmed. Just whelmed, I guess.
I dig the BYOB (7-11 right next door) and appreciate another restaurant choice in the neighborhood. Hoping that maybe the Japanese portion of the menu will be better...
