I went to Sabor A a few weeks ago with a big group of friends (12+). There was some construction going on outside the restaurant, but it was still easy to find a free parking space. Their steak was thin, but tasty good. I was fine with the thin slice of steak and chicken since the price was under $20. It was busy when I was there, but we still had decent service. I would go back there again, so I recommend this restaurant.
Review Source:Peterson Ave. construction now blocks view and easy entrance, luckily parking is available nearby. Thank goodness! What a lovely place. The service was great (Jeanette), the empanadas alone make it worth a visit. Fried food that is not greasy, fresh vegetables with the pollo dinner plate and sides of plantains and arepas! We'll be back, next time with friends.
Review Source:My wife and I served in the Peace Corps in Colombia and we can attest to the authenicity of the delicous food served here, and the four member Latin Jazz band was an unexpected bonus. The soft sound of really good Latin Jazz flowing through the rooms was exceptional. There were five in our party, four Americans and one European. We all enjoyed Sabor A Cafe!
Review Source:Excelente flavors from Colombia. The place is very confortable for family. The service is very good (Marisela) made excelent and quick service. Recomiendo: Las arepas con queso, la sobrebarriga asada, los tamales, las yuquitas, el aji, jugo de mora en leche, el arroz con leche, y el flan de caramelo.
Review Source:Went on a Saturday night. Â Loved my pina coladas and empanadas (beef). Â Not too happy with the waitress. Â She forgot about us but thankfully we had some very attentive and friendly bus boys. Â Ordered the picada. Â It was HUGE. Â Probably made for 4 people. Â Warning tho, it's all fried foods. Â Will never sit outside again. Â Didn't feel too safe with some of the shady characters around there. Â Will definitely be back for drinks and appetizers.
Review Source:Not worth it. Sorry to say... I actually feel bad.. But it really didn't compare to the other places I have been in the area....
The drinks and the service were pretty good, probably the best part, but everything else was poor quality. The meats, the veggies... Just didn't scream delicious or anything.. Meats were deep fried and so hard... Not that I don't like deep fried.. Because I can definitely handle it.. But this was like soaked in only oil... Seemlingly masking the freshness?
I should take back the customer service part... We came in pretty early for a Friday night probably around 8, so it started with very good service, prompt and nice, but as the night grew to finishing up dinner, the service was RIDICULOUS. totally forgetting about us and taking care of everyone else. We couldn't even get a dessert menu! So we just left....
I'm not going to waste time writing anything other than JUST GO!
If you know Colombian food, GO.
If you don't, they will guide you, GO.
If you want a kick-ass yet mellow handshaken margarita, GO.
Friendly staff, GO.
Casual fun atmosphere, GO.
If you're a pretentious foodie-wannabe that is going to compare this authentic cuisine to what you EXPECTED it be or think it SHOULD be, stay home and watch Giada.
Cafe a Sabor is a nice treat. Â I decided to dine there on a recommendation from family. Â I went out with coworkers. Â Parking is easy on Peterson, BUT this place can easily be missed!!! Â Its next to MOMS filipino restaurant on the corner. Â The first entrance area is small which may catch new comers off guard, but there is a second dining area in the next room. Â Atmosphere in the second room is darker and narrow, but it has a nice chill vibe to it.
NO BYOB, but they take reservations.
We arrived there and early in the night and not everyone was there. Â It took a while before our server got us drinks. Â But as the night progressed, service picked up and food and drinks were in front of us in no time. Â Food comes in very quickly once ordered.
Drinks: Â
Original Sangrias - were okay, light and typical sangria.
Mojitos - Perfect blend of sourness to it, refreshing. Â Me and a friend couldn't stop ordering them. Â Recommend!!!
Appetizers
Definitely try out the Empanadas! Â Order both chicken and beef and decide for yourself. Â The beef empanadas are filled with pulled meat with a mix of spices and i believe potato. Â The outter shell is not the typical thick breading that you come across with empanadas and meat isn't ground up. Â Breading is thin and crisp, I can not further describe, but you just try for yourself, comes with a spicy dipping sauce on the side.
Main Course:
I went all out with the meat and got myself the Los Compadres - steak, chicken, choriso, plantain, yuca, potato on a wood plank. Â All of the items that come with it are delish, except for the Yucca, not too fond of it personally. Â It was just a dry side to this dish. Â If you order the Compadres, order it as something for a group. Â Something that everyone can try or pick at, in case someone decides to go with pork, seafood, or chicken. Â
BE AWARE:
When ordering the Pequena. Â It is NOT a small dish. Â Its a plate with cut up pork pieces. Â Its a Mound of food. Â Two people order this dish even after digging into it, they just barely closed the To-go box! Â
Desert:
Flan is so-so. Â Dates and cheese are nothing special. Â To be honest, we were all satisfied with our meals, didn't really need to order any desert.
Food here is delicious and with very reasonable prices. Â Everyone was very satisfied with what they ordered. Â No complaints. Â You will leave with a full stomach. Â Big plus+ The band plays at 9pm. Â Makes the experience very enjoyable when you are with friends and/or a date. Â Oh, on the monitors, they play 80s early 90s vhs music videos prior to the band, (Not sure if they were Colombian videos) but hilarity will ensue if you watch them. Â
Highly recommend for those for a craving for meat and don't want to get to fancy about it. Â Very easy on the wallet. Â I am a fan and will come back to this place. Â Remember to try the empanadas!!!
I came here with my parents, and we had the churrasco and something else (I forgot the name--it was fried pork, plantains, bread, yuca and sausage mixed together). Â I thought it was delicious! Service was prompt, and I liked how cozy the restaurant was. Â It also didn't taste too heavy, which is how I feel sometimes after eating Colombian food. Â I'd definitely come again!
Review Source:Sabor not only is your food consistent in being delicious, but I swear every time I visit the portion keeps getting bigger and bigger!
It's been a hot minute since I've last been here and I must thank the bf for suggesting to re-visit. The food was just as good as I remembered if not better.
For a party of four we ordered: chorizo con arepa, 2 chicken/2 beef empanadas, and each had an entree.
Conrizo con arepa (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/epOvUIFJEm9rdlxwA1jV8A?select=gU3g-Dnbni7jV5qtFO5EfA">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>); I've always had the empanadas and absolutely love them, but wanted to try something new and decided on this dish. I really like the seasoning and flavor of the chorizo, the arepa (corn cake) is bland, but that's why it's served with something as tasty as chorizo to balance it out.
Empanadas (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/epOvUIFJEm9rdlxwA1jV8A?select=Tr3v28Qh7m_7AkUeOeRwUw">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>); I always order this when I'm here, tasty and generous amount of meat.
My entree: Carne asada (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/epOvUIFJEm9rdlxwA1jV8A?select=qhvVOZ4CphMvEpDpoVkrSw">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>); what a generous portion of skirt steak, well marinated and comes with rice, fried yuca, plaintain and a salad, yum, I only ate half of my steak. This dish can easily be serve for 2.
My bf: Carne Encebollada <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/epOvUIFJEm9rdlxwA1jV8A?select=qvdPZtGZm72uizNDYiyXcg">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>); he loves onions and steak so what better dish than this?! He loved it and found it very flavorful
The other two entrees: Puqena (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/epOvUIFJEm9rdlxwA1jV8A?select=KOnmqA1fFavgaHvXv9ak8Q">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>); a traditional Colombian dish, Tina thought it was good, but didn't really like the fried pork ribs. / Los Compadres (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/epOvUIFJEm9rdlxwA1jV8A?select=R9iuei1HHFHAHuk6jeSkuw">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>) this is the King of all the dishes they have! Such a great amount of food that my brother couldn't even finish it! He really enjoyed it and like that he got a taste of everything; chicken, beef, chorizo.
What a great meal! Also the entertainment was fantastic, I might not have understood them, but they had really good music and sounded great!
In a nutshell, charming room in the back, friendly staff and more importantly good tasty food so yep I'll be back.
Started with empanadas which were delicious and followed by beef tongue with salsa and bandeja paisa (flanked steak, sausage, chicharon, plantain, beans).
All dishes tasted amazing. The steak was perfectly cooked to desire and was quite flavorful. The beef tongue was tender and well prepared. The chicharon had quite a bit of meat and was nicely fried and non greasy. The sides were also a hit: perfect salad, really good plantain.
And we should not forget the flan which was made with tres leches and had the perfect flavor and texture as well.
Totally worth checking out, with plenty of parking on Peterson, makes for a perfect hassle free evening and a great dinner.
I am a Mexican, so I think i know a bit about good food. I have been dating colombian for the pass 5 months and have been dying to try some colombian food. This was plan for our dinner. Some how we ended here, as soon as we walked in I thought that this will be a eat, pay and drink place. We then walked in the back to see more seats. We sat down and order us a PITCHER of sangrias. She order me some platter, I am not sure what it had. But it was something that I could have asked twice for it. IT had banana, rice, brown beans, an egg, and colombian sausage. I love the entire dish except for the sausage. Did I mention they play live music. If you want to try something different. STOP HERE.
Review Source:So we went here on a whim. Â
Trying to avoid the car ride to LAS TABLAS.
great disappointment
The reviews were off the hook but like many times before- going on what other people say - I was totally and absolutely unsatisfied and repulsed.
Ordered:
Empanadas de carne - mediocre and quite blah
Their "salsa" which technically should be oil, onion, and garlic -
I'm sorry but Colombian ahi is not made with avocado.
Pandeja paisa - runny kidney beans, thin breakfast steak that was seasoned with teriyaki ( not Colombian ), chicharon ( meh), oh and the arepa!!! Can we say cardboard?!!!!
The worst arepa ever!!!
Tamale- Ill give it a 5 just for the sake of being ok. Â I almost chocked on bones about 8 times but whatever. Â
Over all it was terrible
Don't go here - its not worth it - at all.
Taco bell is more Mexican then Sabor is Colombian.
If you are looking for excellent Colombian food this is your spot. I have dined at all of the Colombian restaurants in chicago, and let me tell you this is as close as it gets. The food is always fresh, and good. the service is always prompt and the waiters are friendly. go on a saturday when they have live music. I also recomend the empanadas and the bandeja paisa.
Review Source:It has been a long time since I have had food this amazingly delicious from a restaurant. Not only that but the service was quick and fantastic as well.
I had the pollo al carbon omg!! I the seasoning was just right, the rice perfect, and salad delish! I ordered a side of tostones mmm perfect combination.
I got a great amount of food and didn't feel like I needed to throw up afterwards as I typically do with most places. There was actually room for desert. I had the flan which was not as sweet as most but because caramel is drizzled on the plate right next to it as well you can just choose to add the extra sweetness. Although it is far from me it is worth the drive!!
Again, I went through Groupon now this past week to found a deal on this place. I've been using that app on my phone quite often.
My husband and I started with some yummy empanadas and for out entree, we shared the picada pequena. The food was great and the price was hard to beat. The only reason, I took one star away is the service. The server paid more attention to the tele novela on tv that her clients.
we came for a birthday and was surprised by the interesting space. The restaurant seemed small but had a band area and back room. We ordered
empanadas - very good. loved the fried yet crispy shell
ceviche de camaron - very good, loved the shrimps on tostones
lengua en salsa - THE BEST EVER! super tender and in amazing sauce.
Loved this place! they had a great live band playing at night, and the service was very good as well.
I came here for the first time last friday with my husband, my sis-in-law and their friend, and absolutely loved it. It is a little small inside but it was so much fun. They have live music on Friday so it was a big plus since it was my first visit.
The food was absolutely amazing!!! My sister-in-law helped me a lot since I had no knowledge of Colombian food. She ordered the empanadas for appertizers and seriously after the first bite I wanted to take the whole dish for myself. I had the flank steak and my husband had a traditional grilled steak with grilled chicken. I did not enjoy my flank steak that much but did like my husband's very much. The best thing from the main dish though, were the fried plantains. It was amazingly delicious!!! I also get the passion fruit juice which was the best choice ever. We also had flan for desert, which was a little thick for me, but still very delicious.
The servers are very friendly and the atmosphere that day made me think I was at a friend's house, not a restaurant...very very homey.
I would recommend this place to everybody and since it's just a couple blocks away from our house, I will definitely come back here more often.
In the hopes of finding my boyfriend a bowl of Sancocho, we found ourselves far into the cold night at Sabor A Cafe. This was our first Colombian food experience and it was delicioso.
We began with some small empanadas and a plate of chicharron. The empanadas were tasty but a small aside to the big fried chicharron. We ordered the chicharron without fully knowing what to expect. Upon its arrival it looked and tasted like a thik slab of good bacon. It was crispy on the outside and tender in the middle. What kept me from eating all of it were the hairs still stuck on the outside layer. To my own entertainment my unassuming roommate didnt see the hog's hair and chowed down, only to realize amid her last bite what she was eating. Still... it tasted good.
From there we ordered the crispy fried shrimp served with fried plantains, rice and a really really unique tasting and tangy dipping sauce. This sauce made my meal. My friends each ordered platters with lots of grilled meat along with some rice, beans, more chicharron and an egg.
It was all really good and nothing was extremely new, the chicharron being the exception.
To end we ordered some rice pudding that was served warm and was really surprisingly sweet and delicious.
I've driven by this place many times and have often wanted to come in. Well, I finally did...and this place was surprisingly enjoyable and delicious.
They have great daily deals - 2 meals and 2 glasses of wine for $20, there are some exceptions. Or you can get a meal at full price and the second one 1/2 off. I got the grilled chicken dish which came with rice, plantains and a salad -- and the chicken was one of the juiciest pieces of chicken I've had. The portions are huge and everyone that ate with me seemed to enjoy themselves. I'd totally come back.
I've never tried Colombian food until my friend told me about her mom's restaurant-Sabor A Cafe Colombian. I have fallen in love with Colombian food! The food here is a "MUST TRY ALL". The meats were tender and had a kick to every bite. I had the carne asada with the rice and plantins...DELICIOUS! My bf had the all meat platter...could not remember the name but it had the sausage, chicken, steak, plantins, and banana. My favorite appetizer here is the empanadas! BEST EVER..still haven't found another Colombian restaurant that beats their empandas. The empanadas though is little too expensive for their size. I wish they were cheaper so I would buy more. The chicharron is good too!!
Besides the food, I like how they have a band sometimes. It is great to keep us entertained while waiting forever. The place is kind of tight but it's decent. Parking isn't so bad late at night. Major Flaw though is the wait. It seems like whenever I come here- it takes them FOREVER to make the food. As far as the service goes, NOT SO GREAT. That's why I gave 4 stars. I always get the same waitress and she never ever smiles or looks happy to be there. Not only that, she never comes back to check up on us. So we had to wait a while for the check to come. Not only that, her coworkers was basically taking over our table. I didn't mind because they did a better job than she did. As for prices, it's not cheap but worth it.
Overall, will come again just because there isn't nothing better than this Colombian food.
I am from Colombia (born and raised there) and this is one of the best Colombian restaurants I have been to in the US. I have been here twice (I do not have a car and it is a 20 dollar cab if you live in the Lakeview/Lincoln Park area) and both times I have had an amazing experience.
Yes, service is slow and if you are looking for cheery helpful staff this is not the place to be. Nonetheless the food more than makes up for it (and is reasonably priced too). Their carne asada, pollo a la plancha and bandeja paisa are some of the best I have tried in the US.
If it is your first time eating Colombian food I would highly recommend getting a dish with plantains, they are some of the softest, sweetest plantains I have had in Chicago. The empanadas with aji as an appetizer are great and so is the arepa con queso.
If you want to try authentic Colombian food (no chips and salsa on this one) and are ok with not being greeted by cheery attentive staff, I would highly recommend Sabor a Cafe. It is the best Colombian food (home cooked meals aside) I have had in the US.
Every once in a while there are days when we as humans are tested. Â
Our loyalty is tested. Â
Our patience is tested. Â
Our restraint is tested.
This day was my day to be tested.  The plus was that one of my favorite underground Mexican trovadores, Alfonso Maya, from Cuernavaca, Mexico was having a small intimate concert here at Sabor a Café.  Having been over 5 years since I saw him perform live, I jumped at the opportunity and planned weeks in advance with the bf to go.
Calling Sabor the day of the concert to confirm the time, we were told 8pm. Â Being the good concert patrons we are, we arrived at 7:15pm promptly and were asked if we had reservations. Â We didn't. Â Our hosts, informed us it was a $5 cover and found a way to get us a table in the dining room where the concert was to be held. Â Now a $5 cover doesn't bother me, but it does bother me when I spend $100 on dinner and drinks and am still charged cover. Â
To begin our five-hour ordeal we had some Colombian empanadas, arepas de queso, and a glass of pinot noir. By this time, 8:00 rolled around and still no sign of a musician. Â Our server returned, took our dinner order and held out her hand, with no please, thank you, or even F U to follow. Â Well, I guess you could take the F U written across her forehead as a sign, she was terribly unpleasant and obviously did not want, care, or enjoy being there. Â Under normal circumstances I would have eloquently said something to the owner, but we deduced that there was no way someone would keep an employee like that unless they were sleeping with them. Â Our words probably would have fallen on deaf ears--nuff said. Â Be reminded, still no musician.
We ordered dinner because we knew we were in for a longer evening and had not enough food to sustain us through the concert. Â Having ordered a glass of wine and another soda before the two tables around us, as them getting served their drinks before us, the bf stepped up to the plate, walked over to the bar and signaled for the server to come over to our table. Â She appeared, in her usual demeanor and we reordered our drinks.
8:30 Alfonso appeared, stopped by to give "saludos" and tells us the concert was to start at 9:00 pm. Â Great. Â Thanks for the correct info Sabor, at least 2 more hours of crap service to go.
My ceviche and the bf's grilled shrimp arrived timely. Â And as much as I hate to admit it, the grilled shrimp was the best grilled shrimp we have EVER had. Â If you HAVE TO come here, I highly recommend the grilled shrimp. Â Skip the ceviche and skip the arepas con queso.
I generally refuse to put up with poor service, and have been known to never return after such. Â The only reason, and I repeat, the only reason we stayed was for the concert. Â The acoustics for this genre of music were superb, the line of sight to the musician was unobstructed, and the changes in lighting catered to the artistic ambiance of the evening. Â Everything else aside, the concert was what I had hoped for and more.
The only thing worth returning for is, Alfonso. Â Next time, we'll eat somewhere else, drink somewhere else, reserve our seats, order water all night, and tell them to keep the $5 cover. Â How's that for an F U?!
Loyalty for Alfonso: tested and passed
Patience for crap service: tested and passed
Restraint: tested and barely passed
Ok.. if you check out my other previous reviews you will note that I almost never give 5 stars! This place makes the exeption. I went here with Richie D.(famous yelper) and we were both starved.. Needless to say this place hit the spot.
I had the pollo al carbon with a platano and white rice, and small side salad. The chicken was the most delicious meat I have had in a while!! Perfectly cooked and seasoned.. The green salsa they provide  is deliciosa! Richie had the carne asada(god, i hope i got that right!).. i am not  a huge fan of red meat but this was suupper good! and he had a yuca.. which I loved!
The waitress had a cool name!.. which I don't remember! But it was rare! she provided great service though..
The decor was nice too.. the bathroom was clean and smelled great!! just in case that matters to you.. you know what they say: if the bathroom is clean it's a good place!
Oh yeah.. the mojito is the best I have had since Nacional 27!
Summary: good live music on Fri/Sat but dismissive and unaccommodating about significant food hygiene concern.
I used to like this place but really can't anymore after my most recent experience. I ordered my usual pechuga al carbón (grilled chicken breast), and everything was fine so far.
After a few minutes, I remembered to ask for chimichurri (sauce based on parsley, olive oil, and various other ingredients), which they should have brought to begin with. Now, in combination with the chimichurri, the bites I took had sand in them. When I notified the server, she brought another portion of chimichurri, but it had the same problem. Nevertheless, she declined to try it herself and took no further action. I scraped the chimichurri off my chicken and finished the plate.
On my way out, I brought the issue to the manager's attention. In particular, I suggested that some of the parsley might have had more soil than usual and they might not have washed it thoroughly enough, but she claimed that what I thought was sand was actually ground black pepper, declined to try it herself, apologized but dismissed my concern, and took no further action.
I'm not planning to go back to Sabor a Arena. The extra star is for the excellent live music by Alex on Fridays and Ãngel in the Solar System on Saturdays.
Good food, great ambiance and really wonderful live music on Friday and Saturday nights.  My wife and I find ourselves ordering the same thing every time:  Pechuga al carbon (a thinly sliced grilled chicken breast with a fried plantain, rice and some greens).  The chicken has a delicious flavor and is never dry.  We always ask for the green salsa and pour it all over the rice.  Sometimes we order the empanadas for an appetizer. The tamale is unusual and really delicious.  It's not like a Mexican tamale.  It has a chicken leg inside!  Aside from the food, the music is just wonderful.  A guy named Alex sings and plays the guitar, backed up by a drum, bass and other accompanists.  Sometimes people show up to jam with them.  Sometimes people spontaneously begin to dance.  Proof?  See the videos of some of these sessions here:  <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2F20-300.blogspot.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dsabor&s=ed9760855385f9bb1a3893db3e95d954a2c075b3d3a2e5a4c3fbe8d1e22462af" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://20-300.blogspot.c…</a>
Why five stars? Â Well, I give Charlie Trotter's five stars, but for entirely different reasons. Â I give Sabor a Cafe 5 stars because the sum of the parts makes for a good time. Â The food, the price, the music. Â It all adds up. Â A star for this, a star for that . . . all of the sudden there are 5 stars!
mmmm, my jibarito quest continues...even in a sleet storm!
Yes, this is Colombian...but if you look closely, you can find that they have a sandwich very similar to the Cuban jibarito. Perfect! Press me between plantains and call me happy. LOVE. It was a little messy, and the meat a bit chewy/tough, but I just drowned it out with mayo and chunks of tomato and priceless plantain pleasure.
Service was a bit slow, but probably due to one woman running the whole restaurant. She was very nice though, and quickly delivered me lovely Diet Cokes, friend plantains and my counterpart's equivalent of a Colombian Irish Breakfast. It was goooooood. Hot, fresh, and TONS of food.
OMG, I almost forgot the empanadas...AWESOME. Hot, gooey, baked-fresh...but only option is beef. Good thing I'm a beef-eater, because I wouldn't want to miss these hot pockes 'o love.
CHEAP. I think dinner with everything was about $25 + tip. We left STUFFED. With music ringing in my ears...yes, loud, authentic, live Colombian muzak. Nice touch.
Ps. It's like 2 blocks from Target, score! Parking is also super easy on side streets, just check for permits on some of them...but Western is fair game.
Viva the jibarito chroncles!
Empanadas! Empanadas! If you look closely and sing it in your head, empanadas is easily interchangeable with 'hallelujah', and seriously, would Handel have minded? It's just a chorus after all, right?
I'm convinced that a serving of empanadas from Sabor a Cafe combined with a side of maduro frito (fried plantains) could bring peace to an acrimonious  world. Add in deliciously seasoned char-grilled chicken breast, or tender, yet crispy breaded pork loin and you might also have harmony.
The interior is warm and inviting, if modest, but a word of caution - there is a small stage in the back room for bands to perform so it can get pretty loud. The menu is appealing on multiple levels and even a picky eater should be able to find something appealing. Portions are generous and well-priced. Parking is easy, and the staff is generally friendly though not necessarily talkative.
If you're looking for authentic Colombian food, Sabor a Cafe is a must try!
I've been wanting to try this place out for about two years now. I wish I'd made a point to come here sooner. We sat in the front room which is small, only about 6 tables, but it was cozy and there is even a small fire(?) place. The staff was friendly, and the food was good. We started with empanadas which were very tasty with rice and shredded beef, not ground beef like some other places make them. For our meal my husband and I split the Los Compadres plate which had grilled chicken, steak, chorizo, potato, yuca, and a sweet plantain. The meats were seasoned very well and the steak was especially yummy. Our friend ordered a similar entree and a mojito which he said was good. His steak however was quite fatty so minus one star for that.
Overall, a nice little Colombian place that is close to home. I'm sure we will be back.
YUM, YUM, YUM, YUM, YUM!!! Â My hubby & I just moved into the West Ridge neighborhood a year ago & were thrilled to find this place! Â It is only 2 & 1/2 blocks away from us & it is FANTASTIC! Â The food is authentic, given in generous amounts, and a great bang for your buck. Â If you are stumped for what to do for dinner during any week day--check out this place--you will not be disappointed in the food. Â
I am not a huge fan of the inside of the place--it is split up into 2 different areas--one room is dark & they play loud music on a projection screen during the week. Â Makes a little hard to have conversation--but the food more than makes up for it--especially as it comes pretty quickly after you have ordered.
Great place, great food! Â
Sabor a Cafe is one of the few stand-out restaurants located in West Rogers Park on Peterson and Western.
It's an authentic looking, fun place with a friendly staff. Food portions are pretty large, so arrive hungry! Â Also, it's a BYOB, which makes it even better!
I hosted a birthday party here several years ago and the staff was very accommodating to the large party that showed up! Â (Not to mention, the plan to show up there was kind of last minute!)
If you are looking for a unique atmosphere and unique food, give it a try!
Maybe I was spoiled by living in London but I've been really struggling to find a decent mojito in Chicago. Â This place has fantastic mojitos garnished with a slice of sugar cane, a great find.
The food is delicious as well. Â I had a combination plate of some kind featuring a large, thin-sliced steak, sausage, deep fried pork rind and lots of beans, rice and fried plantains.
At the weekends they have live music, reserve a table if you want to be in the room with the band as it gets busy.
Between the mojitos and the pork rinds (basically the ultimate megascratching for those who like their pigsnacks with a little soft) I've crossed off two big homesickness triggers.
