    Decent hibachi
Typical hibachi food, dry chicken and same old fried rice. I stuck with a sushi/sashimi platter but tried a bit of everyone's dish. The service here is a little slow even though they weren't that busy. The show is ok, a little short and unenthusiastic. Gets 3 stars because the hibachi prices are incredible and the sushi slices were huge!

This place is disgusting! This review is for hibachi only. We came here one Saturday night with no reservations so we couldn't sit at the hibachi table which was fine because we could still get hibachi food at a regular table. I ordered the hibachi shrimp. The food was terrible! Maybe I'm just accustomed to good hibachi food but this was the worst I've ever eaten. The shrimp were tiny. The rice, veggies, and noodles all tasted like smoke. Where's the good hibachi in this city?? It's not here.

I chose this place to take my brother out for his birthday this past Saturday. Needless to say, I figured a teppanyaki place would be a great celebration and experience for my brother.

We arrived on time for our 7pm reservation when the hostess then informs me that they are running behind and it will be another 45 minutes until we get seated in front of the hibachi and suggested that we sit at a regular table. My brother is a humble man and insisted to me to just take the table. This greatly disappointed me. Had I known that we would have to wait another 45 minutes to sit in front of the grill, I would have never made reservations here. In fact, that was the whole point! I mean, 10-15 minutes I understand-- but seriously?!

I'm a restaurant manager myself, I understand the busy rush, and I understand how seating works, I had a 7pm reservation, you should prepare for that. If there's a small wait, I understand, but you clearly underestimated the amount of reservations you booked or walk-ins you took for the night. This was very disappointing and no one did anything to resolve the situation.

For the meal, I got my plate before everyone else did for 5 minutes. Then 2 of my guests got there's, and followed after another 5 minutes for my brother. By the time my brother got his food, the rest of ours were cold. The food itself was mediocre, my sea bass was rubbery and did not flake off like you would expect a sea bass would do. My steak was fine. Nothing special all in all. Perhaps if I had a show in front of me, the mediocrity of the food can be forgiven but we didn't even get the chance to enjoy that experience.

The positives? Yes, there are some. I'm not here to bash, I'm here to give the honest constructive criticism someone in the same industry feels. The ambiance was cute, trendy, and would be a great spot for dates. They have a fun selection of over-the-top sauced up maki rolls which we all love to indulge on. We had the Snow White and the Spiderman as appetizers which were good.

I kept looking around waiting for a manager to touch our table or someone to come by for me to complain to. In my opinion, I don't care if a guest complains, as long as you give me the chance to fix the situation for you. But it was clear by the end of the meal that they were way too busy to assist us with anything.

When we got the check, the server gave us a $20 gift certificate to use in the next 4 days. I don't know if this was supposed to resolve our situation or just a promotion to all guests as the server did not specify. I  don't plan on using it. For a $200 dinner, we left un-satisfied and I was greatly disappointed to have brought my business and brother's birthday celebration to Sakura. This was supposed to be special for a hard working man like my brother and it did not live up to the expectation I wanted for him.

Full disclosure, we only had maki and did not do any of the hibachi/teppanyaki/noodle or any hot dishes. We came here on a groupon, making trying new places a little less risky. We ordered four different rolls and while they were okay, they were nothing to write home about. The ambiance of the restaurant is hip with upbeat music and ambient lighting. Service was great and the staff very friendly. In a city full of decent sushi spots, this one does not stand out. It is okay if you live in the area, but not a place I would go out of my way to visit again.

Awesome. Free lot parking. Convenient location. Very visually appealing inside (so authentic, yet modern). Prices are decent and the Teppenyaki dishes will definitely fill you up (guarantee you'll leave with a full, satisfied stomach). The show was great and yes, the fried rice is just phenomenal. Best I've ever had. Ideal for birthdays.

We were impressed by the romantic ambiance sitting down, however the sushi was not impressive. With multiple restaurants in this neighborhood offering sushi, we will pick a different restaurant easily.

What initially drew us in was the "all you can eat sushi" and "under new management" banner on the outside of the restaurant, however upon asking we learned that is only for lunch hours.

I ordered the Philadelphia roll (all I could taste was the cream cheese) and the Tropical Mango roll (which was actually delicious - slightly sweet - but too expensive for what I was expecting). My man ordered the spicy maki combo. He couldn't eat much. I tried a piece and the sushi tasted much different than all the other sushi experiences.. like it had been sitting on shelf for awhile. The combo came with 3 different rolls, however we could not tell the difference. He described the combo as the "spicy fish" combo.

The Teppanyaki experience and the AYCE (and only order premium rolls) could be worth it but we will never know.

I went here a while ago and realized I forgot to Yelp about it, so here I am.  My boyfriend and I went in for dinner and had a great time.  The food was great, cocktails were stellar, and the staff was accommodating, friendly, and entertaining.  I was surprised that our bill was as low as it was for the quality of the experience.  I will be going back soon!

The value is fair.  I used a groupon and was ultimately happy with the decision to purchase the deal.  We went to dinner prior to the Sunday evening rush.  The servers were prompt in taking our orders and delivering our food but after that, they were no where to be seen.  Worse then the servers were the tuna spicy roll, yellowtail spicy roll, Alaskan roll, and eal roll.  They were sub par, something I would expect a grocery store chef to make, however, the Godzilla roll was amazing. The Godzilla roll was the only "special" roll I ordered.  I normally enjoy the simpler maki rolls but the ones ordered were subpar.  I'm very glad we tried the Godzilla roll.  I'll most likely go back but not sure if I will without a groupon deal.

    Two words. Food. Poisoning.

I had actually read some reviews on this place before trying it out, and most seemed great. There was one mention of food poisoning and I took it with a grain of salt. Big mistake. Almost like clockwork, 8 hours after eating at Sakura, I was sick as a dog.

All in all, the food was tasty (typical hibachi), the chef was friendly and entertaining. The service was terrible. We waiting no less than 20 minutes for our check. It was so bad, in fact, that the couple at our table received our check by mistake, and we still waited another 10 minutes for it to be delivered to us!

It's too bad this is one of the only Teppanyaki options in the city. Can't say we will be backk.

We were craving Hibachi and this place was nearby and looked pretty cool! It was around 7 on a Saturday but we only had to wait probably 15 minutes even though the place was packed! They sat us at a high-top while we waited--very friendly and prompt service.

The chefs were entertaining and friendly, service was great! The food was delicious--all meals came with soup, salad, shrimp appetizer (2 shrimps) chicken fried rice and noodles (plus your meat and veggies!!) it's a lot of food and you leave feeling happy and full!

I loved my experience and I will definitely be back! Also--we recieved a $10 off coupon for our next visit!

Great food and a very fun hibachi experience! They do a great job of accommodating a large group with many different orders, everyone got what they ordered, cooked they way they had requested, which was nice. You get a lot of food for your money.

I give it 3 stars because: it takes quite awhile to get the many different orders properly cooked so by the time we got our meat, our (very delicious) fried rice and noodles were cold. I recommend eating the food as it's plated for you. Our waitress was slow to get drinks... most of us were waiting for drinks for half of the meal. Also we had a reservation and we still had to wait an entire 45-50 minutes to be seated.

Otherwise a fun overall experience! I know that accommodating a group of 12 for hibachi is difficult and we truly did enjoy ourselves.

We were able to get seats pretty quickly without reservations, granted we went before the dinner rush and it was a Monday night. The food was well done, with the only exception of being slightly over-salted at times. The hibachi was fun, as usual. The staff was very friendly although she had a hard time understanding splitting the bill with my group so we can take advantage of the Yelp deal I got.

Having never done the Teppanyaki experience, I was excited to try this place.  The food was very tasty and the "show" was fun;  free parking made it convenient, and a Yelp deal made it very affordable.  However, this place only gets 4 stars because of two things:

    1.  I made a reservation for a Tuesday, and when we arrived, the hostess/waitress seemed confused by that fact.  Maybe it was because it was a weekday and it wasn't that busy.  However, she led us to a table that was clearly about to start their dinner process.  She began taking food orders before we could look over the drinks, but since we had already looked over the menu online, we were ready.

    2.  The people we were seated with were the absolute worst.  To our left, a bulked-up, aging choch ball with his trophy Eastern European skank.  He had a "just get on with it" demeanor, and she seemed to not like anything prepared for her.  This made him get more alpha towards her until she just sat there uncomfortably quiet.  To our right, two tech-yuppies who couldn't shut up about their latest app that had written, or coded, or reviewed, or tested, or beta-tested, or.... "SHUT UP!"  Behind us, at the table that had been assembled with people who arrived after us, were people laughing and applauding and seemingly enjoying the artful blend of humor and culinary skill.

I cannot blame the establishment for the terrible people at our table, but if we had been at that other table, this place would probably earn a 5 star review.

Good stuff.  Came here because I had a groupon.  The fish was very fresh, and all of the rolls that we had were tasty.  The waiter did forget to put our order in at first, so we wound up having to wait about 45 minutes for our food to arrive, but he did give us free edimame to compensate.

Also, before you drive around for 15 minutes looking for parking like I did, there is free parking in the Walgreen's parking lot.  And don't worry, your car won't get towed, I was paranoid too but my Civic was still there when I strolled out with sushi in my belly.

We went there because we had a groupon, which is a great deal! Other than that, I didn't think there was anything spectacular about this place. If you've ever been to a hibachi place, this is just your standard. They do the onion tower and that's about it. No shrimp toss! But seriously, the food is normal, nothing stood out. The only reason I would go back is if I had the groupon again, because then it's pretty cheap for the amount of food you get.

Definitely amateur hour when it comes to habachi cooking. The chef did the bare minimum during the cooking presentation & couldn't execute the most basic tricks.

The food was the blandest tasting habachi I've ever had in my life! I think the flavor was left on the grill as he scraped it away.

Even with a free meal I wouldn't go back. The Habachi places outside of the city blow this place out of the water. They could of had a good thing going here.

I went here with my boyfriend and his brothers for a fun dinner in the city.  We came here because there was no wait.

The inside is super trendy and looks very clean. We had some simple sushi rolls which were all okay. I had the sparkly Fuji apple martini which was really good!

For dinner, I had the filet mignon teppanyaki.  The food was good, but the show of cooking the food was lacking. I think our short attentions spans annoyed our chef a bit!

Horrible service. We had to wrestle with the staff all night, to get the food we ordered, utensils, checks, anything. 7pm on a weeknight, and they ran out of tuna and eel, which they only told us about after we ordered and after a long wait. Management just gave a plethora of excuses and we had to fight to get one roll for free. Food was mediocre at best and over priced. Never going to again.

This place isn't a bad Hibachi option.  The show is fairly entertaining, and the price isn't bad.  However, the restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived at 8:15 for dinner, which is not a great sign.  Also, in comparison to other places, I was not overly impressed.  However, as this is one a smaller number of Hibachi places in the area, I would make a return trip.

I've reviewed Sakura before, and already gushed about their food. Now, I'd also like to do that about their service. We booked a party of 16 no problem, as compared to other restaurants that we looked at in the area. They gave us two whole cook tips to ourselves, and two chefs who were ready for us at the reservation time. They also didn't seat the last six spots at our table, which was great. Both the server and chef were very helpful, bringing out drinks and appetizers promptly, and doing things like keeping a meat only area of the cook top, and having certain veggies excluded. I know these things sound like average requests, but they really went over the top for us, and made the night go very smoothly. We'll be back again soon!

LOVE this place. Came here on a Groupon and loved it so much that we actually came back the same week because we were craving it so much! You have to do the Hibachi Grill! Miso Soup- fantastic! Salad- amazing! Fried rice- one word- YUM! We both got the filet mignon- medium rare and it was cooked PERFECTLY- honestly some of the best steak we had ever had! Also, amazing service! I hiiighly recommend this place to anyone wanting a great experience from service, to ambiance, to food! :) Will be back for sure and probably will do some birthday parties, there!

While walking around Lincoln Park on a Sunday night, we passed by Sakura. Even though we had dinner a few hours before, it was our last night in Chicago and  we were playing with the idea of having a second dinner. So we went into Sakura and it was pretty much dead and the interior is interesting and kind of threw me off when I walked in thanks to the clubby and trendy vibe it gives off. The dark furniture along with purple lights had me wondering when people were going to start fist pumping.
We wanted one last hurray with sushi in Chicago so we made our way to the sushi bar which was a smart move because service and speed of food was super quick!

We started off with an order of edamame (tip: if you check in via Yelp they have a free edamame offer) and it came out with a maraschino cherry on top which is random but gave it personality. From there we got two rolls and to be honest, I really don't remember the names of them since it was a few months ago. All I know is that there was one sushi chef there and he was cranking them out--both were super tasty I do remember that, tasty enough for us to finish the two rolls as second dinner. Oink oink! Nothing completely memorable about the experience that sticks out in my head but at the same time, nothing terrible---solid place to stop by when in Lincoln Park whether it be for first or second dinner.

The food here is quite tasty. We shared an appetizer, 2 rolls, and some fried rice. My thoughts:

    1. Haru Maki. This was a solid choice for an appetizer, a fried spring roll. I particularly enjoyed the plum wine sauce. It had more taste than the kinds I've had elsewhere.

    2. Spicy scallop. This is one of my go-to rolls, so it's hard to impress me with this roll. Sakura did. It was the spiciest Spicy Scallop I've ever had - in a good way!

    3. Sandwich Roll. This was by far the most inventive roll I've seen. It was a lobster salad, tuna, avocado roll using rice paper instead of seaweed, and the roll was presented as 4 sandwich pieces, like you would get if you ordered a tuna salad sandwich from Panera. Very unique and delicious.

    4. Shrimp fried rice. Amazing rice. Tons of shrimp. Not at all greasy or heavy. It just might be the best fried rice I had.

So if the food blew me away, why did I give Sakura an average score? The service.

While we had no problems making our reservations or being seated, we were constantly waiting for our waitress to check on us. She took our drink/appetizer ordered, then disappeared when we wanted to place our dinner order. When we were long finished with dinner, we were looking around for her so we could get our check. Once we got our check, we stuck a credit card and our groupon in the billfold immediately, but she had disappeared. I feel like the place may have been understaffed, as I saw our waitress answering phones and taking carry out orders quite a bit, but this is an issue that will need to be fixed.

    Some bonus good things:

    1. I had no trouble using our groupon ($20 for $45).

    2. This place has parking! It looks like it's the Walgreens parking lot, but it's for all of the stores in that little area, including Sakura. This was a big bonus for us, as there was no street parking available. I do think they could make the fact that their customers can park in the lot a little more clear. It wasn't obvious until you walk up to the restaurant and saw a small sign in the window.

I will likely be back, but I will be ordering take out.

I was in chicago on business and was staying in Evanston, IL. So I read the reviews and found it meant not sitting on the El across town. It was about a block form the el station. not a long walking distance.
I found the resturant spacious and with a nice ambience concerning it wasn't bright lights, rather a low light lounge.  I sat at the bar, and the bartenders were great, and the food came fast.  I tried the sushi sampler, with three different types.  And then I moved on to the main course which was also cooked Habachi style and came out great.  Although, this review is covering a slow Wednesday night, I  not find anything
wrong with the place. Great place to go!!

I hate to write a review with a 1 star rating but due to the food poisoning myself and my fiance experienced at Sakura, its merited. We went in for lunch and the place was pretty empty so we were the only ones at the Teppanyaki table. We ordered steak and shrimp and waited for the 'show' to start. The guy came out looking like he just rolled out of bed with a massive hangover. He barely greeted us and when we asked how he was doing, he said he had, 'been better'. I get not being stoked to be at work, but this guy should have called in sick. The presentation was pretty weak but we were going to have a good time regardless, so we had a few drinks and made the best of it. The food was OK, not great.. but not terrible ( how hard is it to cook small bits of meat on a flattop.. ). We paid our tab and headed to the bus to go back home.. This is when things started getting bad...

DON'T READ ON IF YOU CANT HANDLE THE GROSS TRUTH!  :)

About 30 minutes from the time we left the restaurant, my stomach started gargling.. I started turning white and feeling nauseous. Not much we could do being on the bus, so I just tried to think happy thoughts.. Well, a few minutes later i literally started turning green... We got off the bus and i waddled to the first bar I saw and headed straight for the facilities. The next part I will spare you exacts but think of that scene in the movie Bridesmaids, it happened... and it was bad. Surprisingly my fiance was not having the same feelings as I was, so I wondered if it was something non-Sakura related.. Well, about 30 minutes after we arrived home.. she spent the rest of the afternoon involuntarily acting out that scene from Bridesmaids as well!

I am not sure if it was the food, the sick/unclean chef, or the likely unclean flattop that was the culprit but it was the only meal we had that day and symptoms came directly after the meal. I have traveled many parts of the '3rd world' but never experienced food sickness to this degree.

I will not return to this establishment.

Went here with a big group for a friend's birthday. The staff was great very nice and helpful. One of us had a onion allergy and they accommodated her needs. As far as shows its your typical Hibachi show, nothing special or unique. Quite frankly, it was also a short show. The food from the Hibachi was mediocre. I have had better food at other locations the taste was bland, not to mention my chicken was hard and dry. I ordered the fried rice and teriyaki chicken

One side of the restaurant caters to the tepanyaki crowd while the other has tables for those that prefer sushi.  We were on the sushi side since we weren't in the mood for tepanyaki.

The mood of the restaurant in the evening has a bit of a clubby vibe - purple lights on the ceiling and club-type music (although not loud music which is good).

Since I'm pregnant, I like that the sushi was broken out into vegetarian, raw and cooked sushi rolls to make our selection process a bit easier.  I really liked the rolls that we had - Beautiful, Dragon and California and felt that it was a fairly good value for the specialty rolls relative to other places in the area.

The starters were standard - shumai and miso soup - but nothing out of the ordinary.

Service was very good and prompt, without feeling rushed.

Pretty standard teppanyaki place, I had a good time.  I was there for my birthday, and they did a nice happy birthday thing - nothing to garish.  The food was quite tasty, and I found I had plenty for leftovers the next day.  I didn't try the sushi, but others at my table did, and they were all pleased.

I have eaten here 3 times before my last visit and thought it was one of the best of its kind in Chicago. So, based on great past experiences I decided to take my brother and the end result was embarrassment.   I felt terrible for recommending this place and I will never be back.

When we arrived there was a line to check in with the hostess and at this place, the hostess starts checking people in from the back of the line. People had to step in to inform the hostess that there was a line.

The food sucked!!!!!  They also nickel and Dime you. I ordered the lobster with the yellow egg sauce okay, they did the usual shrimp appetizer first an added the sauce to the shrimp. Then when my lobster was served without the sauce I asked the cool and he pointed to my plate to say " there it is" pointing to the leftover sauce from the shrimp appetizer. There was nothing but a bit of sauce and grease left over on my place.

The fried rice was dry, veggies were plain and not as much variety as before, beef overlooked AND they dot understand how Portion the servings. They guy next Tony's who got the combo of shrimp and steak got A LOT more steak than my brothers full portion.

Bottom line, don't go here. Even if you liked it before.

This place isn't that bad. I like it because it's an affordable teppanyaki option! While the food is just standard teppanyaki-- the show is more than worth it. I like that the soup is a clear, mushroom soup (a welcome respite from the standard miso!) and they have creamy ginger salad dressing. Yum.

Other than that, it's a pretty standard teppanyaki place. Nothing super special. The show is very entertaining, and can amuse someone if they haven't done teppanyaki before. Especially the onion volcano, and the way they have an interesting way of putting the fire out ;) But don't let me ruin it.

All in all, it's a pretty standard teppanyaki experience. The chef was more than accommodating to the tastes of some of the members of our party.

The sushi was delicious: 4 stars for taste, 4.5 for presentation. The staff was very attentive and service was prompt, but not pushy. The bill was slightly pricier than other sushi places, but over all a good find in Lincoln Park.

I recommend the sakura roll. The dragon roll was also good and the sweetheart roll was adorable-- it came out in a heart shaped wrapped with pink salmon.

The service here could have been better. Firstly, the server was not familiar with the menu herself. And she seemed to rush us into finishing meals. She asked us if she could take away the plates  three times during the meal. Can't she see we still have food in the dishes?? Also, we were charged more than we should pay as we ordered teriyaki salmon and she gave us teppanyaki salmon instead. Angrily, she didn't even apologize for her mistakes.

The food was okay, over-priced, and not in a large portion. Salmon was too bland so we had to dip it in the soy sauce. The only thing that could gain credit for this restaurant is the decoration.

A friend and I discovered this place after craving a Teppanyaki dinner and were not in the mood to drive out to the burbs for Rokbonki.  When compared to like places Sakura rates around a 3.5.

The chef put on the typical show complete with a cho-cho-ing train and the volcano.  We started with soup and salad and honestly neither one of these stood out that much.  I do recall thinking I wasn't a huge fan of the salad dressing - but that's prob just personal preference.  The steak was cooked the way I wanted but it seemed to be lacking flavor...the sauces on the side were a nice addition but sometimes I don't want to have to add the extra calories!  The scallops stole the show for me....they were so tasty and cooked perfectly.  The fried rice was good but I have had better at other places.

Overall it was an okay experience but I'm more likely to drive to the burbs for a tried and true place.

I visited Sakura for some pre-drinking nourishment and had a great experience here.

The server was obviously brand new and seemed a bit nervous, but did a great job. We ordered ginger salads and some edamame to start (checked in on Yelp and got a free order of edamame!!). Afterwards, we had two specialty maki rolls and they were honestly the best sushi I've ever had. Very affordable place, even with the specialty rolls. I have been to more expensive sushi places and Sakura topped them easily. I think we had the "Twins" roll and the "King Kong".

The next time I am in the neighborhood I will definitely be coming back!

Let me first come out and say, if you've been to Ron of Japan and/or are expecting Ron of Japan, this might be a let-down for you.  Whereas "Ron-Jon" is a solid 9/10, Sakura is a 6/10.

While the general tone of this ad may be negative, I will say that I WILL be back.  I've been there twice now and Teppanyaki-style food you can't get just anywhere - let alone 1/2 a mile from where we live.

One last disclaimer... I dined alone both times and did NOT sit at a Teppanyaki table; however, I did order of the Teppanyaki portion of the menu.

Let's start by talking about the staff.  Again, this is strictly your server (not the Teppanyaki chef or host).  Both times I was there, I felt that the staff's attitude was "indifferent."  It didn't seem like they cared you were there and they didn't seem to care that they were there either.  I'd grade them with a 2.5/5 - 2.5 for taking the order, bringing water, and the check.

Atmosphere... it works.  The music is a bit electronic/loungy - fits the vibe of an upscale sushi restaurant.  It makes the restaurant feel alive.  Decor is appropriate.

Food... mixed bag.  Overall, I find their food to be on the bland side.  You're going to want to use either salt or soy sauce.  This might not be the case at the Teppanyaki tables where chefs tend to use liberal amounts of butter, salt and pepper.  I ordered the chicken & filet combination.  With that, you get mushroom soup (bland) and salad (bland) to start.  The meat part of the entree leaves me to question, "What if I only got chicken? What if I only got filet?"  Neither MEAT portion is that big.  You get a decent amount of vegetables and the fried rice was the highlight of my meal.  I don't think you get $2 worth of chicken to upgrade fried rice to chicken fried rice.

All in all, it's FINE - just FINE.  Not great, not bad - FINE.  I wouldn't feel great about paying full price here... For $33 subtotal, I'm just not blown away.  But thankfully, I have boatloads of Groupon $ that I view as "prepaid meals."

We went here with a friend and her daughter to try the Teppanyaki and it was pretty good although a bit expensive. The decor is really nice and the "show" is pretty good. Hubby and I both got the shrimp and beef, the soup was ok just not much to it and the salad had way too much dressing was just iceberg lettuce swimming in dressing.

They overcooked my steak a bit but not too bad and the shrimp and fried rice were delicious. We would go back again and try the sushi too. A huge bonus is the free parking in the Walgreens lot, that area is so difficult for parking so it makes that a huge draw!

Well...what can I say. I am going to put this review in a complement sandwich. Its going to go like this: Compliment, complaint, compliment.

This place is located in a very up and coming restaurant and parking is readily accessible.

-Why do I feel like I am walking into a posh nightclub coming into this place? Why is it so dark in there?

The place is decorated simply and has plentiful seating.

-Are all their severs on drugs? Because not only did they forget my drink but they forgot the rest of our parties' drinks as well.

    The hibachi layout is cool!

-Why the hell is this Teppanyaki chef squirting water at me? Yeah don't do that.

    Sushi was amazing.

-Teppanyaki was not so good. Tasteless and over cooked. I had the steak and chicken. How can you mess up chunks of steak and chicken? I don't know but they did.

    Probably not coming back.
