Had the fried BLT and it was really good.

Unfortunately the location is kind of unfortunate as it's easy to miss. Hope they improve their sidewalk signage, as this could certainly become a regular Saturday lunch spot.

Great sandwiches and feel. Everything is made by them so it's fresh. I do mean everything by the way, even their drinks. I got the pulled pork and loved it. The pork was tender and the sauce was fantastic. Might actually go back and buy a bottle. The people that run it are very nice too. The cook actually gave me a free scone as they are working on the recipe for their coffee house at Ashland and Southport (check that out too). The only thing I would advise is to get a soup or salad with the sandwich instead of the chips. The chips taste good but are really thin and kind of annoying to eat. Irregardless of the chips you would kick yourself if u skipped this place. Go!

This place is really cozy and obviously has an eco-friendly/green atmosphere. It's kind of hipster and that adds some personality to it. They do lack more vegetarian options though, but their veggie burger was great while I enjoyed an amazing roasted garlic potato soup. Definitely a neat place and you get a decent meal for a decent price. They also have a reading session for kids. And the staff, don't forget the staff, they are really friendly!
I'll be back for a sandwich next time.

This is one of those great places that really cares about their environmental impact.  So, if that's important to you, too... Give them a try.

I absolutely love the portabella mushroom sandwich!

The location is the only thing that prevents me from eating here more often.  But it is worth the trip.

Definitely a business I'm supporting. I've enjoyed every sandwich and really want to support the sustainable approach. We can have great food without being wasteful. Kudos. Make sure you pair your sandwich with a soup.

Wonderful green/humane meat/veggie friendly sandwich shop. Very clean. I had the pulled pork sandwich on a wheat roll. Excellent flavor. I will return.

If you're looking for a delicious fresh sandwich and salad I highly recommend this place.

Like everyone says, the pulled pork is great. I also had the seared porkbelly sandwich (it was a daily special) and it was delicious. You won't be disappointed with this place. If for some reason you are disappointed, email me and I'll pay for your meal.

    (just kidding)

The owner's intentions with this place are so pure that it makes me feel especially good about eating there.

The best pulled-pork sandwich in Chicago is not found in a barbecue restaurant.

Meat, bun, sauce--that's all you need, but they all have to be well crafted and finely balanced.  In this case, the former two are excellent, and the meat itself is outstanding.  Maybe even perfect.

I didn't care that much for the pumpkin/sweet potato soup, and the house salad (with sauteed onions and potato sticks) seems kind of goofy, but all of the food overall tastes fresh and clean which is worth a lot of points.  My wife declared the black bean burger "amazing" which is highly indicative for someone who uses adjectives so responsibly expertly.  Even more meaningful is that she refused to share with me, which is not like her at all.  Apparently it was that good!

For heaven's sake, go there for lunch RIGHT NOW.

Any day I make it to Sandwich Me In is a special day. The food gives me joy and nourishment. Insane amount of nourishment and an insane amount of joy. It's like eating in a country farmer's kitchen. The owner is super great too. He told me this is his dream come true, and you can tell he means it. Go in with a happy heart and you'll leave with a happy heart, and a happy tummy to boot.

I am reviewing what I've typed so far and have to add another line about how unbelievable this food is. The soup's are so fantastic, the chicken & rice or ham and veg are my favs. Someone else typed about the ginger sodas, I get one every time. Ginger works as a pallet cleanser, so you can get a fresh bite with every mouthful.

I am glad food like this is so affordable. Look at what you spend on other dine-out or take-out meals and you are probably paying the same or more for much less quality. The food is made from scratch and local farmed and produced. You can taste and feel the difference.

The portions are spot on. I weigh about 150lbs but eat like a 500lb monster. I leave Sandwich Me In and am fully satiated.

Side note to anyone that gave them under a 4-Star, you're nuts and live within a culture of complaining. You probably have no concept of how to enjoy anything.

Thank you everyone at Sandwich Me In! Amazing.

    Hubba hubba!

If you are like me and see a black bean burger on a menu and expect it's going to be a semi-bland, half-arsed attempt to placate vegetarians, take note.  The black bean burger at Sandwich Me In is stellar.  For one thing, it's dense and heavy.  Like, two hands heavy.  It's also flavorful and I can't even tell why (possibly because I just couldn't stop eating it long enough to analyze it).  From what I can observe, it really is black bean and rice, but there's something else very earthy and the grilling brings out some savoriness.  It's vegan, but something about it was reminiscent of homemade grilled cheese.  It was...scrumptious.  I had it plain, without tomato and mustard, and it was that good.

The soup options were roasted pumpkin and sweet potato, and turkey rice.  I had the former and it, too, was very good.  A combination like that could be overly sweet, but it hit a just-right note for me.  It also had spices that brought out flavor but not heat.  A side is included in the price of the sandwich, which was $8.  Very fair for the quality.

When we arrived, there were people at two tables.  When each of them left, they made a point to tell the employee (owner?) how good their food had been.  I thought that was very promising, and happily, my food delivered as well.  They have a frequent customer card but we didn't pick one up since we are not in the neighborhood regularly.  But hopefully we can find our way back more often.

I love Sandwich Me In!  I happened to walk by in search of a place to eat on Saturday and decided to give it a shot.  The atmosphere was delightful as was the owner who greeted me by explaining the concept and the specials.  He is clearly passionate about what he does.

I ordered the Fried Egg BLT with a side salad and my boyfriend ordered the Pork Belly Sandwich and soup (on special).  Mine was phenomenal - the bacon was perfect, as was the special mayo. My boyfriend wouldn't even share his - I don't blame him - but I did snag a sip of the turkey rice soup and it was wonderful on a slightly chilly day.

The specialty sodas were also awesome- we both got the Ginger soda, very gingery but we both really like that flavor, so it was perfect.

Such an added bonus that the food is locally sourced - this is really a great concept that is executed to perfection.  I guess I'm not sure why people think the portions are small - we were both very satisfied with the sandwich and side (and by boyfriend is a pretty big guy.)

I will be back with my frequent buyer card!

Best pulled pork sandwich I've had in Chicago. The BBQ sauce is the perfect combination of sweet and tangy while the pork itself is very tender and well seasoned.

I also got a glass of hot apple cider that they press in house that was very clearly fresh as you could see the sediment. Perfect for a cold day in late fall.

Bottom line, sandwiches with fresh local ingredients are $8 and come with a side (I got turkey and rice soup) totally worth the extra $2 from a sub at jimmy johns for a local (and more tasty) option.

Pulled pork sammich.  Do yourself a solid if you enjoy some good swine and order yourself one of these when you go.  The pork was moist and had a ton of flavor.  The sauce wasn't overpowering and had more of a carolina taste to it.  Yeah the portion size isnt gut busting huge but the flavors are worthy of the price.

I was drawn in by the marketing as local and sustainable. When I entered the shop was really homey and nice. I was greeted straight away by the woman behind the counter who explained to me that all sandwiches come with a side, one of which is soup. I'm thrilled to have found a place that does soup & sandwich lunches as it's been one of my staple lunch foods since living in Britain for five years.

I tried the pork sandwich with apple and sauerkraut and it was delicious. The apple made it slightly sweet and I don't generally like sweet things for a meal (being Swedish everything has to be drowned in salt), but this was just the right amount of sweet and tangy from the apple. I also had a smokey turkey rice soup as a side and even though it was slightly too salty, the flavours balanced nicely.

The sandwiches are on the small side, but that's why they offer a sandwich plus a side. If you are hungry, take soup or something heavier than the salad. I ended up being really full after a soup and a sandwich. I really like that the portions can be chosen and tailored after my hunger.

The drinks are really cheap and all are homemade with local produce. I didn't try one but probably will next time.

When I left Sandwich Me In and walked south on Clark, I saw that Caribou Coffee was full of people. This made me really sad since Sandwich Me In was empty. For shame people on Clark St!

I was on my way home from a frustrating trip to the Verizon store and I looked into the shop and I thought, "OK, let's see if something in here will make me happy."  WOW!

As I read the sandwich board I could see that the owner too great pride in what he put out.  A few things caught my eye but finally decided on a Pulled Pork for my husband and the BLT w/egg for me.  OMG!  Who knew a BLT could taste like that?!?!?!  The bacon was absolutely out of this world, the bun was yummy and NOT heavy even though it was wheat and the mayo just added another layer of flavor.  We both got the tomato soup side and couldn't have been happier; just the right portion to feel satisfied but not stuffed.

As I waited for my food I looked around the place and could immediately tell that he was serious about what he did and his impact on the world around.  The decore was bright and the information about sustainablity was obvious but in no way obnoxious.  I felt good just being there.  And guess what?  The prices are good.  The kids meal of a half sandwich, carrots and a smoothie was $7.  Most kids meals give you chips or some carb and a sugary dessert or a non-effort apple, but I can just imagine how yummy this place's smoothie would be judging by the sandwich.

They have storytime during the week for kids and the place is comfy.  I can tell I will be spending a lot of time here.  What a lucky find!!!

If you haven't had the pork loin sandwich on wheat with a salad on the side, stop what you're doing, and go get one NOW. No seriously. This sandwich is more important that your lunch meeting, doctor's appointment, and that guy from Jerry Springer with the new talk show.  I once ordered this sandwich and brought it in to work. My coworker stopped me while eating and told me I was making gross moaning noises and to quit it.

The whole wheat bun has a slightly peppery bite, and it fits so well with the cider-braised pork that just happens to melt in your mouth. The fried egg BLT is also quite delicious, but nothing compares to the delectable pork loin. Lean, tender and so flavorful.  The side of fries are just okay, mainly because they taste like Ruffles potato chips all crunched up. But the BBQ dipping sauce is zangy and tasty, and I give them props for making everything in-house.

And now I'll go back to looking at my Healthy Choice with disgust and wishing I had a pork sandwich...

I've been three times in the past three days (guess when I tried it for the first time).

The pulled pork sandwich is unreal. Their tomato soup is also great. And their ginger soda is great.

Who should eat here: people who like good, healthy food, and want something different. People who like supporting local businesses and want more of a neighborhood feel while eating.

Who should not eat here: food snobs, people who like large portions (their portions are not small but c'mon you're not getting a "biggie size combo" - the reviewer who complained about this should probably eat at Five Guys).

Looks like they are just getting started with the business. I'm looking forward to what's to come. Lots of potential.

It sounds like the consensus is the same for all visiting Sandwich Me In.
I really enjoyed the BBQ pulled sandwich with a side salad here, but the meal was just SO SMALL!

The bun was nothing special while the filling was excellent. The side salad had the best dressing I think I've ever had, so I may just come back here for that. I will give them props for that.

I think there are some things they need to work on, like portion sizes for the price. I understand they are using quality ingredients, but it's not like my sandwich had goat cheese and kobe beef in it...

I do believe this place has a Groupon Now deal for $5 for some of their sandwiches, so try that out first!

I  finally stopped by this place after a day of shopping. The food was great. I had their chef salad. It came with pulled smoke turkey and avocado. Although, I didn't like the bacon that they used. It was a little too hard. There are a ton of menu options (most are healthy).

I also love the concept of using local produce. Most of the food is prepared in house which is equally awesome. I'm dying to try the pulled pork sandwich and the pear smoothie.

The staff was competent and friendly.

I live around the corner and watched this place going up for the last year and I finally got around to going in tonight.

I love the concept and the food was great.  I had the glazed pork loin sandwich with apples and sauerkraut and omg yum.  The home made wheat bun was unbelievably fresh and soft and the pork and apples and kraut were also very fresh  and flavorful.  I want it again already but can't wait to try some of the other sandwiches.

The unfortunate thing for this place is the location.  If they were open a bit later they might get some more evening/late night business but they never seem to be busy or to have more than one or two people in at a time.  For a lunch place it isn't a great location for foot traffic but I hope it catches on soon because they deserve it.  The person who was working while I was there (I assume the owner/chef) was extremely friendly and helpful and you could tel he cared about the food he was serving and I am a firm believer that loving what you are cooking is going to make it taste so much better.

Good luck guys, I'll be back!

I have now been to Sandwich Me In a few times.  I believe the establishment to be a great addition to the area.  On my first visit I had the Monte Cristo with the shoestrings and fell in love with the homemade bread.  Another visit I had the glazed pork loin sandwich.  The flavors of the sandwich were great but I had to remove a large amount of fat on the pork before eating it. The sauerkraut & apples were a great addition as well.  Another down side was that the wheat bun fell apart.

I brought my friend on one visit because she is a vegetarian and environmentally conscious.  She appreciated the variety of choices and loved her pb&j calzone and side of soup.

Every time I'm in I notice the owner is making changes for the better and I hope this continues.  Keep it up Sandwich Me In!

I stopped by here for lunch the other day after reading about it in a few different places and was totally blown away!  The feel of the restaurant is local, down to earth, clean and exciting.  The food was superb, you can tell the best ingredients are used to create the dishes.  The owner of the restaurant is super friendly and cooks the meals himself which I think is pretty cool.  I wish I lived closer as this would be a regular spot of mine, I highly recommend it!

Based on their philosophy alone they deserve every star.  They do food the way it was meant to be.  And that is something we need more of not only in lakeview but chicago and the country as a whole.
Today I had the special which was a seared pork belly w/ slaw sandwich.  The pork belly was perfectly cooked, cripsy outside tender almost flaky inside.  The cucumber slaw was an excellent compliment to the heavy nature of the pork belly.  House salad was a nice change from your typical green salad.  Blueberry soda was refreshing, it actually tasted of real blueberries, what a concept.
This place will have a cult following but also a lot of one-timers who may just not 'get it'.  Should be around for a good long time and if its not shame on Chicagoans.

Really disappointed! I was really looking forward to trying this place, I love the concept. But I went with one of their few vegetarian options, the PBJ calzone (sounded exciting!), it turned out to be a lot of bread minimally stuffed with what I think was some sort of cinnamon PB and apples? A waste of my money.... I will say that the other customers meals looked pretty good. But, for a place that advertises vegan options outside their store, there were only two. Sadly, disappointed, won't be coming back unless the menu is seriously revamped...

I LOVE this place!!  The roasted garlic potato soup AND the cream of mushroom soup rock!  I've also enjoyed the flavorful portobello mushroom sandwich - love that the bread is just right, toasted but not so much that is scrapes the roof of your mouth. The pulled pork is also yummy - so good it always leaves me wanting more!

Plus the sustainability thing...how great is that?!  Run, don't walk, to Sandwich Me In!

Love the concept, love the food. I've been meaning to stop in here since they opened, and finally got the chance tonight. Had the pulled pork sandwich, the pork and veggie soup, and iced tea. Everything was delicious - I couldn't decide if I liked the soup or sandwich more. No crazy toppings or anything, but that let the main ingredients shine, in my opinion.

I thought the price was reasonable considering the quality ingredients (the meat is local, everything's hand-made), $10 total. I was the only one there and the owner was telling me about their shop, how little trash they've had (most is recycled/composted) and other good stuff. I can't wait to go back!

This place is amazing. I got here a little early and had a bowl of the soup of the day, pork vegetable. It was so good that when my friend came I had another bowl as my side with my Monte Cristo. Also tried the fruit soda and smoothie, both fantastic. They use locally-sourced ingredients, and the freshness is evident in everything I ate. And cheap as hell.

wow...these low ratings are absurd, sounds like the kind of people with unrealistic exceptions.  This place is really great.  About 98% of the food served here is made in house (including the bacon, sauces, rolls etc...), without any preservatives of fillers, and this is something they are very proud of.  The meat and poultry comes from local farms.

Yes, the sandwiches are $7 to $8, and comes with a side.  I actually think this a cheep.  Subway can cost you $6 and is really gross, City Provisions costs you $14!

The owner works really hard, and yes, the food takes a little time (like 5mins) to come out, but again...everything is made with care and not slopped together using pre-cut ingredients.  Great for a quick bite or take out.
    Can't wait to go back.

And PS.  for those who think the sandwiches are small, it's called a regular portion people, there is a reason American's are so unhealthy!  It's OK to eat fried food, as long as you don't eat too much.  I thought the portions were just right!  no one should be eating a sandwich that is bigger.

Not sure where some of these low ratings are coming from. I decided to stop in here and was expecting a standard sandwich shop - something to the likes of a turkey sandwich on wheat. What I found was a gourmet selection of sandwiches that it made it difficult to choose. I opted for the fried egg BLT on wheat. You can't go wrong with that! I'm definitely interested to try their other options and will be back again.

I was headed for a different restaurant when their awning caught my eye...then the name made me laugh. I walked across the street to read the menu on the window and decided to go in. The owner is pleasant and informative about the food and the restaurant's mission: earth/green friendly, and working with responsible farmers.

I had the chicken breast sandwich with a side of the roasted garlic potato soup....I'll be back for both! as well as, for just about everything else on the menu!

At the writing of this review, they've only been open for 2 months...I told the owner, that in a few months I'd like him to open another location in the Edgewater neighborhood so that I don't have to come so far!!

I don't believe in luck, so...welcome to the neighborhood, Sandwich Me In, and may you benefit and prosper in Lakeview....and soon in Edgewater!

I've only had one thing here, but it was pretty bad.

Vegetarian options are a portabella sandwich, some kind of PB&J, and a black bean burger. (I usually hope for something with cheese, or hummus, or, I guess, vegetables, but at least there are some options.) I went for the bean burger. It wasn't a burger so much as a pile of mush without any structural cohesion. It was extremely greasy and fell apart immediately upon my touching it, and it tasted awful, mostly like vegetable oil. The bun was dry and tasteless, too.

Their side salad is lettuce with warm sauteed onions and mushy shoestring potatoes, which is...weird. This place seems to conceptualize food in a strange, kind of unpleasant way.

I think this place has a few improvements to make, but I give it four stars because I am hopeful that it can be a big hit!

To start, four stars is based on the food alone. The portabella sandwich is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The bread is soft and delicious, toasted (i think on the grill) to perfection. The mushrooms soft and perfectly marinated with delicious hummus spread over the bun. I washed it down with a fresh watermelon smoothie, which was watermelon pureed with ice and was perfect for the hot afternoon I went it.

I also like the concept. I got a block about worm composting and am considering trying it! It was something to keep me occupied during the wait that is way too long for a sandwich.

The main problem is that the food takes too long for a "sandwich joint", and it's too expensive. They need to decide whether they want to up their portions, keep the prices the same, and make it more of a sit down place, or lower their prices slightly and find a way to make the food faster (maybe even another cook, as when i went in there was only one who i assume was the owner)

I really hope they figure it out because I would like to keep coming back here- and will until they do!

I saw this place today, and decided to try it.  I consulted Yelp first and was surprised to see so many low ratings.  Either way, I tried it anyways, and was quite pleased.  Sure, the sandwich could have been a little bigger, but the pulled pork was quite delicious with a slight crispiness to it.  Very delicious sweet sauce.  I was also very pleased with the side salad, as the rosemary in the dressing was fantastically paired with the greens.  I would have appreciated a larger Iced Tea, as it was 100 degrees out and nothing queches my thirst like a large glass of fresh brewed, unsweetened black iced tea.  Otherwise, I was pleasantly surprised by whole experience, and can see myself going back.

Gave this place a try after visiting Binny's for my weekly stocking of craft beer. I was greeted well by the cook that explained to me the concept after ordering a pulled pork sandwich. I liked what he had to say but the food speaks for itself and I have to say this I didn't like what it was telling me. The roll was not portioned well to the amount meat served. The sauce was good but with little meat to showcase what it could do, it fell by the wayside.

I usually give places another chance if I like their concept but I will have to wait to hear better feedback to try this place out again.

Like the other yelpers, I wanted to love this place. But it seems more about the idea of being green than the food. Someday, we'll find a place that is both. First, who made this menu? It is just...odd. They go in one direction with trying to be healthy with such local, organic based food, but then they fry half the sandwiches. Plus, there is no turkey sandwich on the menu. Seriously? So I got the chicken. Kind of tough because it was overfried to a dark, dark brown, but at least there was a good flavor. And the only options for cheese on your sandwich? Blue or ricotta. That's just strange. Also didn't love the shoe string fries -and absolute mess to eat.  If it was just about the food, I'd give two stars,  but the enthusiasm of the owners makes me give one more. Just fix the menu please.

I have been waiting for some time for this place to open and was very excited once it did. I was think wow a great sandwich shop and its locally owned.
there is not much choice on the menu as far as sandwiches go. I ordered what i thought was a "thinly sliced chicken breast with coslaw on top" ya i got a fried chicken sandwich on dry bread with coslaw on top. No other toppings were offered. No lettuce, mayo, mustard ect....AND STAY AWAY FROM THE SOUP! My sandwich came with a mushroom soup. tasted sour as if it went bad. I even had a co worker taste the soup as well. She said the same thing.
I will check back at this place after its been open a while longer. Any new business always has a few bumps in the road.

I have been waiting for this spot to open for months now, perhaps my anticipation and expectations were too much. I appreciate the concept of this place and what they're trying to do, however in the end it comes down to how good does the food taste.
I ordered the Monte Cristo, a ham sandwich.  Waited 15 minutes for a sandwich on a slow rainy Monday afternoon, way too long in my book. The sandwich itself was, in all honestly, just plain bad. The bread was greasy as though it was shipped over from a fryer at KFC. I appreciate that the meat was local farm in origin, but it was just dry and tough.  Side salad was just plain bland. I hadn't eaten anything all day and I couldn't even finish my meal, and not because of the quantity.

I think that perhaps this place will appeal to a certain niche, however with all of the other sandwich shops to choose from I just don't see this place lasting long.

I got the pulled pork on wheat, picnic chips and a lemon soda. My food was served on a paper covered tray-- no plate. Everything was really good, but my lunch was over $10 and I was still hungry after finishing it. Portions are small, and I get it; the food isn't cheap to make because most everything is made in-house and meats are obtained from local farms. My advice: visit this place if you want to be green, support local farms and can afford it, but aren't very hungry.
