We were visiting the Soulard farmers market and needed a place for lunch. We found Sassy Jac's, saw all the great Yelp reviews, and decided try it out. Best decision we made all day! Â The bar tender and chef were friendly and knowledgable. Â We tried the Schalfly lager and Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale; both were excellent! Â My husband ordered the Lo country boil and I had the tuna tacos. The boil was well seasoned and the housemade andouille sausage was perfect. The tuna tacos were fresh, perfectly cooked, and well seasoned. Based on other reviews we ordered the creamed corn. OH MY GOODNESS- the creamed corn was fantastic! Â Perfectly creamy, sweet, and crunchy- Â you really shouldn't leave St. Louis without stopping here and trying that creamed corn. We topped our meal off with their delicious red velvet cake which was moist, chocalety, and layered with a rich flavorful icing. Wish we were had a restaurant as good as Sassy Jac's in our neighborhood back home in Chicago.
Review Source:The area surrounding Soulard Farmer's Market is strangely desolate, a handful of little restaurants and lunch stops littering the blocks winding away from the market's main drag. St. Louis sprawls, so does its suburbs and its streets. There's no urgency to its layout because once you pass the river, there's plenty of land to work with. Sassy Jac's is a little stop amongst the sprawl, and unfortunately, given the wealth of St. Louis' restaurants and bars, it doesn't stand out.
The menu is definitely limited, but in this case, it's a good thing. The open faced turkey was only average, but my girlfriend definitely enjoyed the chicken and andouille club. As far as pubs are concerned, Sassy Jac's is well above the curve, but in the greater scheme of St. Louis dining, it is a strong 3-star choice. This isn't the place to go if you want exceptional service and carefully-selected ingredients, crafted to be a one-of-a-kind daytime dish. But for the afternoon layover in the Lou, not a bad choice.
As for its bar service, I can't vouch for anything. Their beer selection seems decent, and they look to have a full bar, but as for the quality of the service or the strength of their mixed drinks - since that seems to be a prevalent concern of Yelp readership - I can't offer much yet. Based on other reviews, however, it sounds like a good scene in the early evening (though I'm not sure I'd be roaming the Soulard Market district too late at night). In the end, there are undoubtedly worse places to grab a lunch or early dinner than Sassy Jac's.
I tried this place early in the summer of 12' and was pretty impressed with the food and the ambience. However, at the Tim it was pretty much empty.
Fast-forward 9 months and I returned to find it bustling with life this past Saturday. I had tried the crawfish salad in the past and that was so-so. This past time I had the Chicken & Andouille Club with garlic fries. The sandwich was really tasty and the garlic fries were enough to keep my breath stinking through the weekend.
Drinks were well-concocted and the bartenders are knowledgeable. I hope this place sticks around he neighborhood. The food isn't bad and the happy hour specials are worth the entire over to Soulard.
The husband/wife team is great! Â This was our second visit and we will be back.
The dinner salad remains huge and excellent. Â We had fish tacos and the grouper sandwich. Â Both were very, very good. Â The remoulade on the grouper sandwich was the perfect touch. Â DO NOT leave without trying the creamed corn!!
Sassy Jac's has become a Saturday lunch favorite. Â The special pairs two boneless pork chops with cheese grits and stewed tomatoes with okra. Â While I love the cheese grits, I have taken to substituting the greens for a lower carb option and I have to say I actually crave the combination.
My wife and I have eaten our way through the menu and have yet to be disappointed. Â The crawfish salad sandwich, Andrew's take on he classic Monte Cristo, the garlic fries, everything is well prepared and the service is excellent. Â Don't miss this hidden gem.
I am a hiuge fan of Sassy Jac's! The location is perfect and the business itself is a great addition to Soulard! I know it's been around for a few months, but I am just now getting around to writing this review.
Whether I go for drinks during happy hour or for dinner with friends the service has always been top notch. Wine, beer, micxed drinks, you name it; they have it and the bartenders do a great job getting the drinks out fast! If drinks aren't your thing you gotta try the food! The last time I went I had an open faced turkey sandwich with gravy; it was to die for! They also gave me a side of fries which were perfectly crunchy...however, a friend had the garlic fries; why didn't I think to order the garlic fries???? They were so great; I think I ate more of his fries than my own. Thanks Sean P.
Overall, this place is a must try if you are visiting Soulard.
Great new spot in Soulard! Â I've loved everything I've tried so far... Â Montecristo sandwich, deviled eggs, Wednesday fried chicken special. Â But, i simply CANNOT leave without an order of the collard greens! Â Delicious!
You gotta love a place where the owners take your order, pour your beer, cook the food, and serve it to ya! Â
It's a good thing they started there. Â And they should be proud!
First time here and will NOT be the last! Great place to have a drink, grab some grub and chill! So glad they are in Soulard! Had the fish tacos and they were seriously some of the best I have had. Â Black-eyed peas were awesome, as well. Â Deviled egg app was a welcome surprise. Â Only so-so thing was the cream corn, needed salt I think, but I am no chef:) Wait staff is awesome AND some of them can really SING!!!
Welcome to the neighborhood!!
I had high hopes on Sassy Jac's. Â I respect the limited menu, thinking that you can concentrate on great techniques and ingredients. Â
We started our meal with with the crawfish fritters. Â I thoroughly enjoyed these, which are similar to a hush puppy with crawfish inside. Â They are served with a remoulade and coleslaw. Â After great things with the fritters, Â I was excited to get my special of fried pork chops with okra and tomatoes and cheese grits. Â My wife ordered the blackend grouper with garlic fries. Â
The Chef brought out or dishes. I have to admit that I was surprised that my chops were boneless. They are two 4 ounce slices of pork loin. The "chops" also were very lightly dredged in flour and there was utterly no golden crust to be found. I tried to stay optimistic at this point as I cut into the chops. They were tough and over cooked. I think my disappointment with the center of plate probably did not let me judge the rest of the plate fairly. We got very little attention after our dishes were served as in the back of my head I thought of sending the dish back(I rarely send things back). My wife's dish was served in much better shape and done quite well: perfectly cooked grouper still light and flaky. The garlic fries beg to be consumed with copious amounts of golden lager. They have a crispy batter on the outside and the flavor of garlic is definitely prevalent. Â
I know this review sounds harsh yet I am talking about the only entree that is served on Saturdays. One that I been wanting to try since they essentially opened.
Very good, affordable and interesting food from a friendly staff.
My first visit was opening night and it was clear the Sassy Jacs team was well prepared for their opening. Â I had the fried chicken special that 's been thoroughly well received by reviewers on Yelp, RFT and http://STLtoday.com over the last 2 months. It is an excellent plate. The deviled eggs came first, and were an outstanding choice made great by the bacon and flash fried basil in the dish. My girlfriend had the "club" sandwich, Â her measuring stick for any restaurant serving one, and found the chicken breast perfect, and andouille a wonderful alternative to ham. Â
Several months later, we've had 75% of the menu and are yet to be disappointed. Andrew clearly can cook much more than the limited menu currently requires of him but I understand his motivations for limiting his operation. This has been a troubled location as Verlin's and Phelan's; keeping it simple (and very good) while the business grows is very smart.
For a 5th star the Sassy JAC's team could improve their beer selection and expand the menu a bit. Â It is short on craft brews and long on American style lagers from AB, Coors and Miller. The menu has room to expand to further showcase chef Ladlie's talents. As a Soulard resident, it is my go to place for a quick bite or a low key cocktail. I look forward to watching this business grow.
Have had several of the sandwiches and a couple of the specials. The Asian Mushroom Chicken sandwich was really good yesterday. I usually prefer sandwiches with cheese but I really liked this one.
The gravy and fried chicken dish is really good too.
I think their fries are the best I've had in Soulard.
The Monday night bartender seems fun and like she knows what she is doing
Wow! A chef friend of ours suggested we meet him here for dinner. The specials are always great. My goal is to eat through the menu, and I am well on my way. Everything is so fresh, the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, and the owners are great! Joe in the kitchen is amazing! I do not like tuna, and the fish tacos are the best I have ever had. Amazing place!! PS Update: Went there tonight for hubby"s birthday, and even through I have been craving that meat loaf, I had the crawfish salad sandwich, and it was as good as Hudson said. OMG!!!
Review Source:Great new Southern food restaurant/neighborhood bar located at the corner of 8th and Soulard just a block south of Soulard Market. Â
The vibe is very low key, intimate, and friendly. Â This used to be the home of Phelan's and later Verlin's. Â The new owners have done a nice job cleaning up and restoring this historic building and restaurant. Â
The deviled eggas are to die for. Â The Blackened grouper and collard greens are pretty awesome too! Â All around $8-$9 during lunch. Â They have a decent wine list too. I heard that they are doing Sunday brunch. Â Must try. Â Highly recommended!
