25 minute wait for a place that was empty? Â
Just want to say something about the salt content of this food. Â It is "seasoned"
This place looked fun to hang out at. Â The water thing... Â The other thing... Â and that other thing...Weird that no one told us about the other "things"... hmm customer service?
Food isn't that great. Â Service isn't either. Â Priced a little too high.
When Shamus T was in Carlotta it was great. When they got their new place I heard they had problems at first. Â I just started going a couple of months ago and have not been disappointed. Â I have mostly gone on Monday nights as they have live music and what they call the "T Bone Shuffle" which is an open jam nite. Â They have a special Tex Mex menu that night too with a prime rib casa dillas which are really really good and the service has been friendly and excellent every time I have been there so far. Â I am a fan!
Review Source:I have only been to the new Shamus twice but both times I've been very satisfied! Â The steaks are juicy and cooked just right for me, pink in the middle and tender. Â The sides are ok and my friend liked his burger which I've never tried but this place is all about the slabs of beef. Â The only complant I have is that the last time I went it took a half hour before the waiter took the payment but we where enjoying our conversation and finishing our drinks so no biggy.
Review Source:Yum yum yum.
The first night I visited Eureka the front desk clerk at the hotel recommended Shamus. Said you couldn't go wrong. He was completely right.
I called the restaurant and a surly sounding woman answered and explained to me that they were down to two servers and the place was very busy. Despite her bitterness seeping in the phone I still made a reservation. That was my only negative.
Upon arriving I immediately noticed the taxidermy of elk, deer, and goats - enough to make Capella's jealous and a member of PETA to have a heart attack. They also have many other fanciful things such as a Tesla coil that they turn on occasionally, a grill you can see behind glass to watch the chefs work, and an arching water fountain that spouts across patrons' heads. In the back lawn was a lasso rack with lots of lassos. It was awesome.
I went here the evening of Independence Day and they had a live band playing blue grass music. It was extremely lovely. The second time I went here they fired up the Tesla coil. Super sweet.
Both nights the servers were awesome. Cordial, consistent, perfectly timed waiters who made recommendations and seemed genuinely interested in our experience.
Both nights I ordered the raspberry lemon drop and both nights it packed a punch. The bartenders are not light handed on the vodka.
Both nights I had the loaded baked potato and the Mac n cheese. The loaded baked potato was what dreams were made of. The mac n cheese was all right.
The first night I had the prime rib. It was a spectacular cornucopia of meaty deliciousity. Seriously fantastic.
The second night I had the petite filet mignon. Tender, cooked perfectly, with a delightful side dish of sauce. It was scrumptious.
I would highly recommend this restaurant.
3 times I have been here first time was not bad. Â Each time after the food has lacked and been inconsistent. Clearly this last time did it for me. Food was not fresh was dry looked gross. They seem to have a big problem with tiny flies swarming around too. I noticed that the last time. Â Was hoping this time that problem would have been taken care of. But not. I don't think much of the service either. I don't like being treated like I'm their "Pardner".
Review Source:We went during happy hour. Beer on tap was only two dollars and appetizers were half off. I had the grilled artichoke and my husband had the ribs. The artichoke was delicious and he enjoyed the ribs. They aren't the fall off the bone type but they had a good smoke flavor. The atmosphere is very nice and is refreshing for Eureka. The staff is very nice, well definitely be back
Review Source:I wouldn't know how the food tastes. TWICE now I have made reservations, one time even changing my schedule an 9 other peoples to accommodate Shamus T Bones schedule, coming in EARLY to help them out... Waited almost 45 minutes with party of 10, including 3 kids. Never got seated, worst staff ever. Then, it happened again.
Just wasn't meant to be I guess... :(
Let me start off by saying I used to go to Shamus in Carlotta  2xs a week!
I have been to the new eureka spot about 5 times
Which is a beautifully built restaurant
Every time I am disappointed
Bad service
Cold food
And the food tastes different then it used to they went from quality to quantity when they moved!
I understand that's how you make money but I wont be going back!
I have eaten there three times now. Â The smell of the place is intoxicating as it fills the surrounding area and it always makes you want to go in.
And after a stroll along the new waterfront trail it is a perfect place for a beer and a chat but that is about all I will be going there for.
Now don't get me wrong. Â The food is generally four stars on taste but I have experienced the dryness which kills the whole BBQ high. Â And together with the meager portion size on some items I just can't get with it.
And the reason that I give three stars is the quality of the food combined with the sky high price makes this a blue moon destination. Â If the price point was correct or the food was more ample they would surely raise the ratings.
So I hear from the locals how good this place was at their old location, I expected really good BBQ food. Boy was I wrong! I don't get what's so good about this place. The meats were dry and bland. On top of that, the food wasn't even served hot. It was lukewarm at best. Is it that much to ask to have hot food? Â Very disappointing!
Also, what is with all the animal heads on the wall?? Someone went a little crazy!
We have been here a handful of times, each time REALLY wanting to love it. The building is cool, and the bar area is really nice- looking really grand & aged, yet comfie. Â 2 things that consistently prevent us from being devoted customers? Â Poor to bad food, and horrible service. Â Aren't those key features in a restaurant? Â We went back a few times, waiting for the "just opened" kinks to get worked out, but we are tired of being disappointed.
Review Source:So I've been here three times now. Â Twice the food was pretty good. Â Once the food was terrible - like day old dried out barbeque. Â In fact, I think it probably was. Â This place can make some very good barbeque, but at best it doesn't seem consistent and at worst they might be serving up some leftovers from the night before on occasion? Â
The good: Â The wings have a cool and yummy and unique sauce. Â The dino bone (cool to be able to add a few ribs to a meal). Â The cornbread.
The meh: Â Their homeade barbeque sauces aren't as good as you would think they should be.
The bad: Â Salads seem to be served quite often with no effort to remove browned and wilted lettuce. Â The bbq sandwiches are way way too saucy. Â Occasionally the meat is dried out and tough like maybe its from the night before? Â
Overall: Â Interesting atmosphere. Â Good service. Â Hit or miss food. Â Way overpriced for the lack of consistency. Â Here's hoping they get better.
I've been here twice, both times were horrible.
The first time we sat at the bar to begin with. The bartenders were struggling to keep up with everything and you see the owner come from the side walking behind them, pays no attention to them or customers and strolls down to the end of the bar with his ridiculous look at me look at me cowboy hat on only to take out a glass of wine FOR HIMSELF. Completely unprofessional.
The wait staff is terrible. They wander without knowing what to do, none of them are dressed the same, and they all look like they're about 12.
The food; bland, my rib-eye was inedible because of the amount of fat on it, my potatoes were from a box. The second time I was served a burned turkey burger, I figured that would be impossible to screw up, but I was wrong. Even the waitress was appalled when she saw it. I sent it back and they offered another one, but at this point with both of these bad experiences I figured I should just cut my losses.
The place is beautifully decorated, definitely spent some money on taxidermy. That's mainly what you're paying for, the prices are stupid compared to the food you are served. This Tesla Machine they have is probably the dumbest thing I've ever seen too. It's going to give an elderly person a hard attack, and I don't even want to think about how much energy it must take to run that thing. They crackle it off at least every 30 minutes.
I will absolutely 100% NOT be going back to this place. Ever.
Steaks were really good. My filet was a little over-cooked, but tasted good regardless. We had the mac and cheese, grilled asparagus, and hush puppies which were also really good (and im not a fan of asparagus). The atmosphere was relaxing and the seating was spread out so that you're not sitting on top of other people. Will definitely return :-)
Review Source:I really enjoy the food here. I'm not that crazy about dead animal heads on the wall..because well..just because you think something is cool doesn't mean you gotta cut their heads off..
on another note..their chicken is very moist..tender..and tasty. I really like their strawberry salad and complementary muffins.
My boyfriend really enjoys the pork sliders..and their concept is very good for Humboldt county.
I had gotten a to go one time..and it is better to eat in..because it is difficult to keep the food neat in to boxes..
Went here when the place first opened in Eureka & hated my experience. Terrible service, luke warm food, etc. Gave this place another shot recently and was pretty stoked. Super good burger (cowboy burger) decent service and a much better atmosphere than the last time. 3 stars because I'm still pissy about my first stay there.
Review Source:Eureka needed this resturant, but its a little over the top. BBQ is meant to take the cheapest cuts of meat, and cook them super slow so they get tender and taste good. Notice I said CHEAPEST. Brisket is not an expensive cut of beef, for example.
At this place, you are seriously paying alot for the decor. And sadly, it just isnt worth the money. I love BBQ, both cooking it and eating it...and this place sadly misses the mark on the staple BBQ meats of Brisket, Ribs, and Pulled Pork shoulder.
I would never pay $28.00 for a rib eye, as I would never expect some one to cook a rib eye for me as well as I can for me...so I am not commenting on the steaks or chicken dishes here.
They have good sauce, sides were just 'ok', and the service alomst had me give this place 2 stars...but some of them are pretty cute.
Great atmosphere. Â Service was excellent from Server 6.
We had the blackened catfish and the pulled pork.
The catfish needed to be spicier but was very flavorful and tender
The pulled pork was good but not much flavor. Â Tasted better after I used their sauces, which were excellent.
I had a side of Mac and cheese and chili. Â Both were bland and lacked finish
The apple turnover was good for dessert.
The two muffins (bread) they bring were good but not very flavorful.
HMMMMM-I think I get it now. Everything was bland except for the excellent Black Butte Porter I had.
I know of some sites this gets a 4 * but nowhere close on a four. Maybe for Eureka it's a 4 but not anywhere else.
Find somewhere else to go if you can.
This place is what  Eureka has needed- a unique, family-style atmosphere that is always buzzing with customers.
Food is always good, and very filling. I leave here feeling like an overstuffed teddy bear.
Busy yes,and with business sometimes comes spotty service, but I've always had a good experience.
Barbecue is not everybody's cup of tea, granted, but if you're in the mood for some great comfort food and a welcoming environment, I suggest you try Shamus. Â
Oh, and they have a pretty bangin' bar. Counting the days until I'm 21...
Great meal tonight!
Ordered the Texas brisket and my wife had the st louis ribs. The cornbread, salad with vinegrette, grilled corn, beef brisket and st Louis ribs were all excellent. Â we also had a couple glasses of the Syrah that starts with L and is listed as a $31 bottle, probably the fourth one in the Syrah section. Â It was excellent. Service was very good, every thing kept full, lots of checks if we need anything.
Only question, why not five stars? ... Hmm, changing my 4 star rating to five :^)
Walked right in around 7:00PM on a Friday, it was busy, but no wait for a table. Â Enjoyed the atmosphere, very lively, and when its full, it is loud, but enjoyable. Â With two young kids, I enjoyed the kids menu. Â A wider selection than normal, and instead of just a side of fries for every kids meal, the kids can pick one of any of the sides.
The wife had the steak, and she enjoyed it a lot. Â I had the brisket and ribs -- it was decent, but as another review or two mention, I found it a tad dry. Â The sauces were a bit bland for my liking.
The service was phenomenal though, we had a very friendly waitress who was excellent with the kids and attentive, even though busy. Â We would dine here again.
Came in to try the place and walked right back out. The hostess was more interested in talking to her friends than helping me. Also I was a single patron but I should not have been treated any different than a large party, yet I was. They prices are also pretty high, especially for Eureka. I won't be back no matter how good the reviews get.
Review Source:We went tonight after waiting some time to give this place some time to settle in. Â We got there at 5:45 on a Sunday. Â We waited about 10 minutes to be seated. Â Our server was on it almost immediately. Â She took our drink order and brought water. Â I love the atmosphere. Â Everyone was happy, including the customers around us. Â I got the two item combo with beef and pork ribs with a salad and chili. Â Beef ribs were perfect. Â Very good bbq. Â Pork was a close second. Â The chili was complex in taste and texture. Â My lady had the salad and steamer clams plus garlic bread. Â The bread was immediately noticeably awesome. Â Smoky and obviously cooked on the grill. Â Very nice.
Clams were really tasty. Â Lots of garlic and white wine. Â We asked for a little more bread to soak up the broth. Â They brought out an additional six pieces and didn't charge. Â I had two nice martinis. Â Our server was cool, professional and not verly friendly, which I liked quite a bit. Â Not fake. Â
The view is really nice. Â They fired up the Tesla coil. Â I loved that too. Â I can't wait to go back. Â I'll be enjoying my leftovers for sure.
I stayed a t the hotel next door for a week and ate at shamus t bones 3 times each meal was fantastic.  I am a good cook myself and very critical  when I eat out, I seldom think to myself I could not do this dish or this dish better.  That being said I had the best ribs ever served to me ANYWHERE, and I get around ALOT.  The New york steak I was brought was not only cooked perfectly medium rare but was easily as good as the one I do at home...ok it was BETTER.  The chili was so good it could be a main course.  And who doesent like yummy cornbread
The service from the greeting staff to the wait staff was excellent, I was never made to feel rushed, and was offered refills promptly more cornbread often and a smile all the time.
Tell me where you can get a wait staff that notices you looking at the owners tesla coil, and puts in a request to fire it off for you. Â Who does nice stuff like that.... SHAMUS T BONES.
I saw the owner there, and possibly his wife, both were serious about their place and I felt like I was more at a gathering of my extended family than out alone far from home.
Its  a loud place, no denying it, which is good cause ina month or so when I'm camping up the coast I'm bringing my wife and three boys here, over an hours drive.
Im going to go home and slap my momma the food was so good! Â Then give her a hug and tell her to go eat here!
Reception area is small and can get crowded pretty fast. Prepare to wait about 15 minutes, even with reservations! Â The decor and view is great! Only restraint with an awesome view of the bay in Eureka & Arcata!
Our waiter was Chris, very friendly and attentive! Might I also add, cute! He promptly took our drink order, then our food order! Full bar and a great on tap beers! Tangerine Wheat on tap, one of my favorites!!!
The space is pretty loud, so be prepared to repeat yourself and pay attention! That way you make sure your order is correct!
If you are a pescatarian there are selections for you. If your a veg,, well there are veg skewers and some sides but not much else!
Salads look ok, basic. Chris, the cute and attentive waiter brought more corn muffins to our table, which are quite yummy!
Mom and Dad were pleased with the salads, thank goodness! Â
The staff is really on top of keeping the table bussed, with smile on their faces! So far, so good!
We were seated at 5:13 dinner came to the table at 5:35, hot and delicious! Â My parents were both happy with their meal! My snapper was moist and very good! Mashed potatoes and cole slaw for me. Both flavorful and tasty!
Chris checked back on us to make sure that everything was ok! Did I saw how cute he is, oh yeah, I already mentioned that! LOL
All kidding aside, Chris is an awesome waiter! The food was all prepared very well and very tasty! Dad loved the pork ribs, mom her rib eye, and me, the snapper was moist and definitely not over cooked!
You'll see some negative reviews, and I was advised that it was not that good. Take into consideration that those reviews were from when they first opened! They have got their rhythm down and I'm very happy to give Shamus T Bone and Chris 5 stars!
Try them out, you'll be glad you did!
Also, I met boss man Chris! Great guy, also very cute! LOL
Couldn't resist!!!
Love ya guys!
Not a local but I hear about how great this place USED to be at the old location. Â But to me, the BBQ just isn't that great. Â Yes it's REAL BBQ and you can tell from the dark layered colors in the meats, but then, 1) the meat's dry, 2) they don't have pork ribs ready by lunch time 3) the meat on the sandwiches are skimpy 4) the salads are underwhelming and topped with DRY meat...
I'll come again, and probably again just to keep giving them a try...but as of now it's just, A-OK.
Beautiful restaurant though. Â LOVE the over-decorated interior with animal heads and their old man mascot and the random portraits of him on the walls...take a look they'll make ya chuckle~
I've eaten here three times, and the first two were good experiences. Â Especially when it was still in Carlotta. Â Today was not a good day at Shamus. Â Our table of 10 was set in a weird corner table that made it so the people at the end had no access to be able to talk to the people in the corner of the booth. Â Our appetizers were good, great even. Â But the service was honestly terrible, and three of the dinners were under cooked (one of them being chicken). Â We had to go to the bar to get our own beers at one point. Â If you're going to eat at Shamus, go there for lunch. Â It's usually pretty quiet so you'll actually see your server.
Review Source:Excellent. Just like carlotta :) Â This is the place for bar-be-que. Â Stick to the classic BBQ menu items like the beef ribs, pork ribs or prime rib and you will leave full and a happy camper.
Cool atmosphere. Â But those of us who frequented Carlotta already knew this :D
Glad they're back. Â and the view of the bay is pretty nice, too.
Went here with my brother to celebrate his new job and we enjoyed our visit. Â It was a Saturday night so there was a wait (as we didn't have a reservation), but we were able to grab a seat at the bar for a drink and an appetizer. Â They have a good selection of beers (local and more) on tap and our grilled artichoke was tasty. Â When we were seated we were lucky to get a table at a window, the view of the bay is beautiful. Â I had the 6oz Filet and my brother had the 12oz New York, both cooked as ordered. Â We thought both cuts were good, though not the best we've ever had. Â What stole the show was the Shrimp and scallop skewer we added to our meal. Â The skewer was seasoned to perfection! Â SO TASTY! Â
As others have noted, the service can be a little spotty. Â Our server could have been slightly more attentive and cleared the unnecessary plates faster, but it was fine. Â The server working the couple of tables around us seemed super on the ball, maybe he had more experience. Â
They have a Tesla coil they fire up every 30min or so, which was fun to see. Â All in all, we had a good experience and would definitely go back.
I was excited to go to this restaurant. I had heard about the Carlotta and hydesville location for years, and made a special reservation to go for my out of town guests.
Our server was out of it.... She interrupted our toast to ask us to order, forgot our appetizer and left our dirty plates on the table until we left. I guess a little patience, cleanliness, and eye contact was too much to ask.
I was also confused about why every other table in the restaurant got a basket of warm corn bread muffins, and we're going without, except she didn't return to check on us through our meal, so how would she have known.
My pulled pork BBQ sandwich was good enough, but the ribs were sub par, and the corn on the cob was ick...
I loved the decor and cozy barn feeling, beautiful view, and low corkage fee for wine/$3 domestic drafts....
Won't return, sure eurekans will like it, but good BBQ is hard to come by! You know what they say, the best restaurants are your own kitchen.
I like it. Â I've been here 3 times opening week. They are working out the bugs of a much larger operation. They'll get there. Wasn't pretty that first week. Â
Great beer on tap, like the ribs and really enjoyed the great lamb rack. Get the balsamic drizzle on the side. Lamb is great without it and good to use sauce sparingly.
Had a bite of the prime rib which was cooked well, lots of flavor from the dijon and oak pit. Â Not too overwhelming.
Pulled pork is technically cubed but also very good. Â
Really liked the Brisket soup!
Shamus I'll be back.
Good food but not worth the hassle. Â We tried to go for lunch but they were closed and the lady at the door was rude and told us they were full all night. Â We then went home and tried to make reservation for the next week and I was told rather rudely that they were full on friday and she hung up on us. Â No mention of other available days our a thank you. Â They won't be getting any of my business.
Review Source:Accidentally reviewed the old Carlotta location when I meant to review this one.
Great food.
Yes, the wait was longer than I liked, but that's because the food is so good, the place is new, and it's really really popular. Â Reviewers need to give them a break on that.
My recommendation is that you should go. Â Expect a long wait (bonus if it's not) and appreciate the fact that it means the food is going to be excellent.
Ok, So, the food was good but, the service left A LOT to be desired. True, they are just getting settled into their new place so its kinda understandable that everyone is a little frazzled but still...
Everything from the appetizers to the filet minion my group and I ate was delish but like I said, if you're wanting friendly... they haven't gotten there yet.
Having said that, its not going to keep me from going again! :D yumm yumm YUMMM!
If you love barbeque, don't come here. Â Granted they had just opened in their new location about a week before we went there for dinner, Â but really? Â So 4 out of 5 of us ordered various combos of either brisket, pulled pork, ribs, chicken, and the 5th (let's just call him "Lucky") ordered a burger.
(the 2 item combos are $25 I think, and the 3 item is $27?)
Our server was nice enough, if a bit frantic, she dropped some warm cornbread muffins (with a freaking cereal bowl of butter pats) and they were nice & warm & sweet, but things went downhill steeply!
After way too long a wait, she brought these 10" dinner plates out with pretty measly portions of meat and some really bad sides - I'm talking not even edible. Â How about baked potatoes that were baked maybe Thursday or Friday; we were there on Sunday. Â Grilled corn on the cob that was grilled the day before and served dead cold. Â Or what about 3/4 cup of mashed potatoes that tasted like steam table, etc. Â OK the sides sucked and were all pretty cold, but you're there for the barbeque, right? Â
How should I do it? Â In order of how bad it was? Â Chronologically? Â In order of temperature? Â Decreasing or Increasing? Â By weight or volume? Â OK, how about alphbeticaly? Â First off, the servings are tiny. Â Like I mentioned above, the plates are small (10"), and 3 servings of meat and 2 sides didn't fill it up, so you do the math. Â Not only are the servings tiny, but.......
Brisket- Â Â It was bland, tough, dry and cold.
Chicken-  It was cooked as long as the brisket shoulda been, maybe longer, but it   was dryer than a rice cake but not as tasty.  It had the texture of calf's liver, and was served at room temperature.
Pork Ribs- They were dry, under-seasoned, and cold.
Pulled Pork - It was under-seasoned, under-cooked and kinda fatty & gross. Â
Steak skewers- The meat actually tasted good if you salted it some, but there was as much bell pepper and onion as there was steak, and it was also cold.
Oh yeah, Lucky's burger was OK.
