I recently starting going here with a coworker for lunch. I really hand no idea it existed. I have to say I am a fan.

They have a wide variety of sandwiches and salads they do pastas and carry home made desserts. I love their selection of bottled drinks and they also do fountain beverages as well.

The best part for me is their daily special. I love all kinds of food which can make it very difficult for me to decide what it is that I want to eat. The daily special kinda tells me what I should be eating and most times comes a discounted price. SCORE! :)

I also had their Reuben sandwich one and it was amazing. The marble rye was delicious and toasted nicely without being over greasy. Their potato salad was not over mayo-ey.

The service here is also very speedy which is something I look for in a lunch restaurant when you are given an hour for lunch it's just enough time to get a decent meal but not enough time to be waiting all day for it. At the side street deli everyone is working hard knows their jobs and are very efficient.

Gorgeous interior.  Very relaxing demeanor and a great place to stop in for a quick lunch if you are near the downtown area.

Cute art-deco era decor. The light fixtures may be original? That was the first thing I noticed when I entered. Very bright with huge windows which let in lots of light. I got "lost" on my way from one job to my other job (I passed the exit on southbound 65) and ended up getting off on the 22nd St exit instead. At the stop light for Illinois I realized I was A) HUNGRY and B) right next to a restaurant I'd been meaning to try for years...yes, years.

I perused the menu for a moment (really several moments because there was an issue with prices ahead of me), and ordered a club sub, no "special sauce"...I believe she said it was a mixture of mayo and mustard. I was really pleased with my sandwich. Nice amount of turkey and ham, good bacon, on a fresh, soft sub bun. It comes with a side, I chose pasta salad. The pasta salad was oddly sweet, whereas I prefer it to be savory. They sell little Tubby Hubby cupcakes (isn't that a copyright infringement?) and big ones too, for $1.25 and 2.75, respectively. A customer came in with some sort of bread complaint, after having eaten all of his sandwich save for a portion of the bottom of the bun...the manager calmly resolved the issue to the guy's satisfaction. I will be back again (when I'm looking for lunch in the area) and will update, hopefully positively.

I was tempted into this place by the reviews of others. Having taken several days to actually draw an opinion on the meal, I have decided it wasn't worth it.

I had a roast beef sandwich, my dining companion had an enormous salad. My roast beef was decked out with "side streets special sauce," (read: French Dressing.) It was lacking in taste, a sure mark of the quality of the products used in production. The lady behind the counter was extremely annoyed by our presence so close to closing time. My friends salad was over topped, way too much stuff. Reminded me of the commercial where the manager asks a guests how his  meal is, the response is "Average, but there is a lot of it."

The grill was closed a full 20 minutes before the posted closing time of the establishment, a blemish I can not withstand. How do you make half of your menu inaccessible to your guests while your doors are still open?

There were employees of the deli standing and chatting in front of the beverage condiment bar, they would step out of the way when someone came up and immediately step back, oddly never understanding they were in the way, failing to move elsewhere in the cavernous and empty dining room.

Everything added up to a negative experience, if it had just been about the food it would have been just an average experience, worth a second try, but there were too many out of bounds plays.

Charming, airy, and uncomplicated little restaurant near both the downtown offices of the gas and electric companies.  Walk through a front dining area into a second dining area and the menu is on the wall over the ordering counter.  Friendly staff.  Very good food.  No booze.  Incredibly slow service during peak lunch hours.

Good tasting chicken jack s'wich. A little on the pricey side...10 bucks for lunch. Definitely nicer inside than what the area would suggest. I would go back again!

I agree with Nancy H., the Side Street Deli has great food and is a convenient, yet "off the beaten path" stop if one works downtown. In my case, it's right along my commute route so picking up something to go is extra easy - did I mention that Side Street has a real parking lot just to its south? That alone is a huge bonus!

Everything I've tried here has been great. I favor salads for midday meals and this place has some great combinations. One of my faves is the Southwestern Cobb...love the addition of black-eyed peas to this one!!!
The cobblers here are a must...take one to go for a mid-afternoon snack!
Nice, airy dining room with lots of tables and also a nice outdoor dining area. Be forewarned, this place does a heckuva' biz, so try to time your lunch earlier or later than the typical noon gig.

Citysearch has a lot of reviews that rave about the chicken salad.  Indeed, it is good.  My only advice is to not get the chicken salad club because the whole time you'll be eyeing the chicken salad with fruit over lettuce which your friend got.  This was my situation.  :p

The place is cute.  The salads I saw looked really delicious.  Food was quick.  Uniquely it has carbonated water in its soda fountain instead of regular water---refreshhhhhing.  A very sunny place and a very nice place to have lunch especially if you are working at Methodist Hospital.
