Well I came here last week they NO longer offer lunch here. I love the kids menu it more afforable then the adults menu which runs from 9-15 bucks. The cashier was very friendly and greeted me which is nice to be acknowledged. Food took between 8-10. Its great they bring the food to you it gives it that real restaurant feel the server was very courteous,so I left 3 tip she deserved it. I Only come here every so often as eating really adds up. Great place to eat!
Review Source:I found myself heading to work a bit earlier than usual with an animalistic desire to eat an omelete. The diner across the street didn't open until 7, so I decided to check this place out.
In sum: their omeletes are fully customizable. Mine arrived at my table steaming hot within 8 minutes. Â Passable taste, shockingly overpriced. ($14.50 for an omelete and fountain drink).
Next time, I'll wait until 7am.
I was told today that they are no longer going to continue the frequent lunch card promotion which gave customers a free meal after they bought seven. With that promotion out, I really see no reason to continue visiting. Prices are too high for what they sell. You can do way better with the same amount of money at pretty much every other restaurant in the area.
Review Source:I work around the corner from State Street Bread Co. so I eat lunch here often. Â Their Turkey Club Panini is amazing. Â The Tomato Soup is also a great choice. If you are looking for a salad the Southwest Chicken salad is also recommended. Â I do not have any complaints at all. Â Great service at the cash register--super nice employees!
Review Source:I really want to like this place - it's only a block from my office and has a decent variety. I am severely disappointed every time and vow that I'll never go back.
Not only is the food kind of meh, it takes a ridiculously long time for your order. For a place that's downtown and caters to a lunch crowd, you'd think they'd have some kind of system that remotely resembles Panera or Corner Bakery. Nope, just kind of slow, disinterested nonsense every time I go.
I've tried going before the lunch crowd [11:30am], after the lunch crowd [2:00pm], tried being overly friendly and have even resorted to just standing there with my arms folded, glaring at my watch and telling the staff that I'm in a hurry - nothing will get me out the door with my to-go sandwich in less than 15 or 20 minutes.
I would avoid this place unless you're a fan of spending half your afternoon waiting for mediocre food.
I was not impressed by my last visit. I've stopped in here a few times before to get soup, and each time never wowed me, but this time was just blah.
I ordered the chicken noodle soup - nothing else. It took way too long to get one little container of soup. As far as taste is concerned, it was very meh. The noodles were chewy and the veggies were crunchy. Plus the soup itself reminded me of Campbell's soup when I was younger, which was pretty bad.
Save your money and get soup at Dominicks, which is better priced and slightly better tasting.
My experiences at State Street are limited to breakfast, when I stay at the Courtyard on business.
Chocolate chip pancakes are excellent, albeit expensive. Â Enormous portions, fluffy, and gooey chocolate make this an impressive AM pick-me-up.
The real trick is to order from the kid's menu. Â They offer the same chocolate chip pancakes in an amount that you'd actually want to eat for breakfast without suffering small gut ischemia or a diabetic attack - for about six bucks. Â Best yet, they don't give you shit for doing it.
Good food, good service, and a good atmosphere. The Mediterranean Vegetable Wrap was excellent. I'll be back to try some of their other unique choices. I don't think it's anymore overpriced than the Corner Bakery or Cosi. You get a decent size sandwich and a handful of chips. If you want a cheap lunch, go to Subway.
Review Source:An A-OK place for a quick lunch in the area. Â They have a large selection of sandwich options to choose from as well as a handful of salads. Â I had a Windy City chicken sandwich. Â The chicken was thick and flavorful, not your typical lunch meat or unsliced chicken breast. Â The sandwich was large with a big serving of chips. Â I would make a trip back to try a few other sandwiches that caught my eye.
Review Source:In terms of taste, SSBC is right up there with places like Cosi, Braeda and Corner Bakery. It's a little off the beaten path, which means it's usually less busy than the more mainstream shops.
Service has never been bad and the folks behind the counter usually smile as they take your order. You can get a good solid lunch for about $10, but if you want a drink or desert, you're looking at $13 to $16. It's a tad pricey for what you get, but you're also a block off the Mag Mile. It's not like you're getting mass produced food thrown together by an assembly line - the food is good quality and presented very well.
Long story short, this place is great if you want to hold conversation over lunch and not feel crowded. If a $10+ lunch is too much for you, this isn't for you.
Avoid, avoid, avoid!!!
My first experience: Sandwiches are overpriced.
My second experience: I ran in for a cobb salad and then ran back to my desk to continue working. No dressing. Who doesn't put dressing on a cob salad?!?!
My third experience: Cobb salad number two had dressing, but it was a vinaigrette. Cobb salads are supposed to have artery clogging, fat laden, creamy dressing. What is on this salad?!?!?!
Never again.
I stopped by this place with a friend before we went to see a movie down the street. The layout was kinda like a cafeteria and the menu was classic American fare. I ordered the meatloaf, mashed potatoes and veggies. Overall it tasted great. The food wasn't completely up to the right temperature but I did enjoy the down home flavors. The value was lacking though. The meal with drink set me back about $15 for a meal that was a notch above a good frozen dinner. Next time I go, if I go, I will probably give one of their sandwiches a try.
Review Source:Is it Panera? Is it Corner Bakery? Is it Au Bon Pain? (What else am I missing?) Well, that's kind of the vibe I got from this place when I came in for a quick lunch. It's a lot bigger than it looks from outside. The order counter is left and back of the restaurant, which also leads into the hotel lobby. Food is pretty similar to the restaurants mentioned earlier: sandwiches, salads, soup, and a few desserts/pastries offerings. I got the half combination: half soup/half sandwich combo. I was able to switch the sandwich for a small order of Caesar salad to go with my cup roasted vegetable soup. The half combo order is $8.95. Caesar salad was okay, with little croutons and very heavy on the salad dressing. I'm probably in the minority when I say I don't like salad dressing. Â Well, I can take like maybe half a teaspoon worth sometimes...Anyway, I know now next time to just order without dressing. Soup was good. Soups vary daily I think, but I think they have offer regular choices like tomato soup and broccoli cheddar.
Service was fast, but I'm thinking because it wasn't crowded today. I'm not sure if this place ever gets that packed anyway. If you dine in, you can take your number card and have a seat; someone will bring your food to your table. Â You can also get things to-go, which you can just pick up your order at the other end of the counter. Decent enough place to sit, eat, watch a bit of TV (on either of the 3 flat screen TVs), and/or read.
Somewhere along the way, America lost her head and started accepting ridiculous things like a $10 chicken sandwich. Â I have a feeling those times are a changing, but in the meantime the folks at St. Street Bread Co. haven't seen the light. Â Or have they? Â Recently I received a 20 percent off card that's good at SSBC 24/7, 365. Â Still, it's not my favorite place. Â Their service, although improved, is slow; and even with a 20 percent off card their prices are high - it's located in a hotel, after all, and I'm without an expense account. Â
However, they do make a pretty tasty sandwich, and their breakfast buffet is probably one of the best in the area, although I think it may also be one of the worst because there really aren't many breakfast options around. Â
So if your company still has an expense account or you want to relive the fast and frivolous pre-credit crisis days, then by all means pay this place a visit.
oh my YUM! Â I've eaten here twice now, first time with the grown-up grilled cheese (that pesto is delish!) and now with the southwest chicken salad. Â All I can say are good things - with the exception of the chippies. Â Yes, soggy...I wish they would substitute a side salad or something, these are too greasy, too thick on the stomach and soggy indeed.
I'm a picky chicken eater (the only meat I'll eat) - but not a scrap of fat or skin on those morsels, and seasoned perfectly! Â The tortilla strips were light and ungreasy, and everything was uber fresh. Â I gobbled that down in 15 minutes!!! Â
From what I've heard, their bread is delicious too. Â Definitely worth trying if you're in the hood.
My tuna melt from State St Bread was AWESOME! Â YUMMM... (they are on special Monday and Wednesdays, btw). Â The prices for the sandwiches are not that cheap, but given the area and quality, I think $8 for sandwich and chips is pretty reasonable. Â
However, minus 2 stars for STALE potato chips!!! What the heck is that about? Â A great tuna melt served with....year old kettle chips that have lost all hope of crunch? Â Kinda gross... work on that please!
I quite enjoyed this place. I would stick only with the Sandwiches and Salads. The soup (Chicken Noodle) wasn't very good in my opinion.
BUT the sandwich I got was pretty stellar. It was turkey, cheese, a molasses mustard, thick bacon all melted on a pretzel bun. It was very tasty and satisfying. The portions aren't huge, just right.
It is in a hotel and the decor is very chain-esque. I think it's because a Starbucks is in the same room, which felt a bit awkward. But this is definitely a good alternative to Cosi and Panera, both of which I frequent as well.
I walked by this place about 5 times saying to myself, "I wonder where that State Street Bread Company place I see the signs for is..."  It's oddly unmarked and unappealing from the outside.  It looks like a closed down Starbucks or something.  When I finally went, it was noon-thirty and the place was practically empty.  There were 4 people in line and I still waited  longer than I ever have at Corner Bakery.  The biggest downfall of this place was the ABSOLUTELY NUTZO prices.
Who do they think they are $10 dollars for a cold-average-tasting-small-portioned-roast-beef-Âsandwich?? Â Everything on the menu needs to be AT LEAST a dollar cheaper, even the tap water. Â They should give me a dollar if I choose to order a tap water. Â
The place was empty and weird, and I don't think they'll ever get people in there with prices like that. Â Just because it costs gourmet, doesn't mean it is. Â It's not awful, but they really need to think about what normal people might want in a lunch restaurant, not somebody's creepy dream vision of a psudo-Panara with ridiculous prices. Â
I'd hate to say it, but I think I'll stick with Subway.
I think the best way to describe this place is to say that it's in a hotel. Â It has that hotel lobby feeling and hotel-like prices to go along with it. Â
I had the soup and half a sandwich. Â The soup I chose was New England Clam Chowder and the sandwich was roasted turkey with bacon. Â Both were fine. Â It didn't strike me as the most fresh sandwich, and the soup tasted like Campbell's canned soup. Â Nothing exceptional, but passable.
Here's the thing though: Â service? Â non-existent. Â It was one of those places that wants to deal with customers as little as possible. Â No eye-contact or talking at the register and then they hand over one of those vibrating things to tell you when the food is done. Â No talking. Â No conversation. Â
And the price? Â I paid almost $10.00 for half a sandwich and a cup of soup. Â I thought that was astounding. Â
The food was fine, but for a sandwich that's more fresh and much less expensive, I'll be heading to Bake For Me.
I'm not sure what review to write for this place - it was just kind of blah!
the food wasn't so good, the service was weird... i just had soup and my bf had a sandwich he didn't find anything special or interesting.
i guess it's a good cosi/panera alternative, but id still rather get potbelly's!
overall a very neutral bland experience.
Are you tired of the long lines at Cosi? Â Or Panera Bread? Â Then give this sandwich joint a shot.
With the entrance on State Street (not Hubbard as the address suggests), this restaurant offers soups, sandwiches, and salads on par with Cosi, Panera Bread, etc. etc. Â True, it's no gourmet fair, but it's fast and the food is decent. Â I had the tomato and roasted red pepper soup in combination with half a chicken salad sandwich during my visit today. Â Like I said, "decent."
My reasoning for 3 stars? Â The food was a little too processed for my liking (the soup tasted a little canned, the bread wasn't freshly baked, etc.). Â And I suppose I was expecting something a bit more special from a local lunch spot than the over-abundant and standardized sandwiches I've become so familiar with. Â *shrug* Â
If I am choosing between a national chain sandwich place or State Street Bread Co., however, Â I would land favorably on State Street's side.
This is my new favorite lunch spot! Â State Street Bread Company has been open for about a month and I am already scared that it will go out of business so you MUST go there! Â I went for lunch and it was practically empty which is not a good thing at prime lunch time downtown, so I'm hoping that people just don't know it's there yet. Â I had the red pepper and roasted tomato soup which was delicious. Â It was so good, I could have eaten two bowls of it, and I had their signature roast beef sandwich which was great. Â The salads looked huge and looked pretty tasty so I will be back soon to try more items!
Review Source:Giving out 5 stars is like giving up my virginity: I save it for someone special. Â And today that someone special was State Street Bread Company. Â Generous portions of sandwiches, salads, and soup, all made to order and served very FRESH. Â I got really comfortable in a booth, and enjoyed how bright, spacious, and quiet the restaurant is. Â Who knew such a great place could be attached to the lobby of a Marriott! Â It costs a little bit more than I usually spend for lunch, but I'll still come back. Â Â
My first experience at State Street Bread Company today? Â Lets just say it was much better than my first sexual experience...
