Really nice theatre and close parking in muni lots for a small price. Saw Hot Tuna and special guest Lean Russel there last night, 7/20/13, and the sound was TERRIBLE!!! Â Very muddy is what we would describe it as. Soooooooooooooo disappointed. Â Love LOVE LOVE Tuna and a fan of Lean but the sound crapped up the whole show. Â I don't think I'll go there again.
Review Source:Really nice intimate theater setting right in New Brunswick.
Saw the Summerland 2013 Tour here. The sound was great. Â Sponge, Filter, Live and Everclear were all in attendance. Â The switch between each band was handled rapidly. Â The bartenders did a good job of getting people drinks fast and friendly. Â The seating was great. Â Awesome sight lines, didn't look like a bad seat in the house.
If you are in NYC it is a pretty quick and easy trek on NJ Transit. Â There are plenty of places to eat and drink before a show. Â There is also plenty of parking. Â The theater itself is a bit of a walk from the station, but not far at all. Â Easily a place to see something.
I've been coming here more often because of the Groupons for Symphony's/Orchestras. It's a pretty nice place. I don't think there is really a BAD seat in the place being it's so small. The sound has been amazing for all the performances I've been to. I also saw Joe Rogan here and It was fine. I could see him on stage and could heard him clear as day.
$7 Beers! Coors Light $7.... Yuengling $7......you see where this is going. I have no clue how much mixed drinks are but I'll bet it's more than $7.
We saw Jewel in concert a few weeks ago at State Theatre.  You remember her, the singer-song writer from the 90's with some amazing hits like this... (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DUNoouLa7uxA&s=ea614570fe487771bca63aae1bcb0567d9851c42fa509ce187a654893aba0903" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.youtube.com/w…</a>)!
Well, I was taken by surprise at how lovely the State Theatre truly is. Â Located right next to the Rutgers University campus in a really clean and quiet neighborhood that didn't even seem much like a college town, I was impressed from the start. Â We parked a block away at the nearest lot, which conveniently allows for a $7.00 (if I remember correctly) fixed parking fee for all State Theatre guests (check their website for more info). Â Then we walked into State Theatre and rushed to our seats because we were an hour late, missed the opening act, and Jewel was right about to hop on stage.
We sat in the nosebleed section, way way way up in the top tier of the theatre, but not all the way at the end where there were a handful of rows of college students occupying those seats. Â We could barely see Jewel from where we sat, obviously, and I was only able to make out her slim silhouette as she approached the stage to perform. Â Oddly enough, this was a non-issue for me. Â I mean, sure I would have loved to be much closer, but even sitting as far back as we were, it hardly affected our experience at all, at least when it came to hearing Jewel's gorgeous voice singing her greatest hits for about 1.5 - 2 hours. Â This concert experience at this venue was quite remarkable. Â The acoustics were perfect, and so was Jewel. Â At the end of the night, I bought her greatest hits CD so I could re-live 'Foolish Games' in the car as we drove to the hotel.
Our deepest regret though, was having to sit next to these two, and eventually three, old broads who were living their 1970s high school dreams stuck in the dungeon of their youth. Â They were constantly taking pictures, chatting, uploading to facebook, and completely ignoring the entire experience, disregarding Jewel and her emotive performance. Â It was the saddest sight to behold, and I kind of felt bad for them had I not been so annoyed at their rudeness and loud banshee laughter. Â The closest usher standing about 30 feet away from them either pretended like she didn't hear them, or maybe she didn't even care, but she really should have acted sooner rather than 20 minutes before the end of the concert to tell those women to pipe down, and ask the one woman to return to her seat because she was clearly in the wrong section. Â We actually moved down the row because the bf really couldn't stand another second of their obnoxious ways. Â
Anyway, an unfortunate wrinkle in the night's festivities for sure, but not enough to ruin an overall great experience at State Theatre. Â
I just wish I had a chance to meet Karen, if not Jewel (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Drmv1VhrtYRo%26playnext%3D1%26list%3DPL012472DDC143FD1E%26feature%3Dresults_video&s=39e05d9355e4efff1ea400f487b6be5ffca62a83174160e1985dc23ae7223e86" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.youtube.com/w…</a>).
I came to this theater to watch Tracy Morgan and theater itself is decorative but have an old smell to it. The seats were comfy and the stage is large, even larger than some of the broadway shows I've been to. I do have to complain about the usher that we dealt with when seating - 10 of us sat down in a row according to our seat numbers. The usher made all of us get up and scoot one over at some point only to make us move back to our original seats once the show already started because she made a mistake the first time around. *smh*
Review Source:I recently went here for a Jane's Addiction / Band of Skulls concert. Â The venue is nice and clean. Â It was really easy getting in and out of our seats. Â The seats were semi comfortable. Â I like how the stage is very low to the ground. Â You feel like you are right in the action. Â I was seated in Row F. It was about 25 feet from the stage. Â
My only complaint was the sound. Â For both Band of Skulls and Jane's Addiction, the vocal levels were just awful. Â We could hardly hear any of the vocals. Â The instruments sounded great, better than many concerts I have been to. Â But we just could not hear the vocals. Â Im not sure if it was because of where I was sitting, but it was really unacceptable in my book. Â Did the sound technician actually go into the audience and see what it was like? Â This is a major FAIL.
Because this was my first time at the venue, I will let it slide. Â If I ever get the chance to go back though, the vocal issue better be solved or it will be my last.
Came here for the Fab Faux recently, and will be going back again next year. Â Sat in the balcony right just above the side entrance. Â No one in front of us, and the seats were fine. Â It seemed there were no real bad seats there and they were comfortable. Â Full bar available even on the upper floors. Â Nothing special about the facility, but a nice one.
Review Source:Over the last -- sigh -- 23 years I've seen a couple dozen shows at the State Theatre. Â Comfortable seats, unobstructed views of the stage, first-class sound and lighting. Â The only reason I'm not giving all five stars is the lineups the last couple of years haven't been that great, skewing very old, or worse, very Larry the Cable Guy.
Review Source:This place continues to impress me. Last weekend, they changed it up completely with a new concept. Cocktail tables and chairs were set up right onstage with the performers for a more intimate, club-like experience. Only about 200 seats were made available. Decent catered food was brought in, along with bar service.
The artists were Rod Piazza and his blues band, and the fabulous John Hammond, who I had seen here a few weeks prior. I was sitting just ten feet away from John during his set, and had a chance to speak with him afterwards.
It's great to have a venue like this in New Jersey, as opposed to having to travel into Manhattan for comparable entertainment. There are also a number of good restaurants in New Brunswick, where you can make an entire evening of it.
i am mostly a fan of the state theater, but i have a few quibbles. i saw a few shows here while i was in college (the student discount tickets are awesome!), and i've bought tickets online as gifts as well. the surcharge for online purchases is RIDICULOUS. considering that it's all automated and no staff member involved, i REALLY don't understand why they think it's okay to charge a TWENTY DOLLAR fee for purchases. wtf is this, ticketmaster? no. it's a tiny theater in new brunswick!
beware the daytime matinees! i went to one once and there were so many old people, all you could hear was the buzzing of hearing aids during the scenes. if it wasn't so hilarious i might've been really pissed that i could barely hear the actors!
Who knew that right in the heart of New Brunswick was a gorgeous, Broadway-caliber stage? (Apparently not me, because I was pleasantly surprised!)
I came here to see Spiraling (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.spiraling.net&s=0567944c0095eca9c5300bc2c91f9b92dd1bbeb5de7baec0b686107ac7c6f838" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.spiraling.net</a>) play in Glen Burtnik's X-Mas Xtravaganza. I didn't know what to expect, and I was really impressed by this stunning and huge theatre. What a wonderful place to enjoy live music or theatre!
Recommended!
Additionally, NYC people shouldn't be deterred from coming to see a show here. Just take the Northeast Corridor line from Penn Station to New Brunswick. It is WALKING DISTANCE from the train station to the State Theatre! Bravo!
There's something so heartwarming about seeing your good friends (who just happen to be the absolutely stellar band, Spiraling, <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.spiraling.net&s=0567944c0095eca9c5300bc2c91f9b92dd1bbeb5de7baec0b686107ac7c6f838" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.spiraling.net</a>) playing on a massive marquee stage while throngs of people give them an ovation for the absolute highlight of an already amazing lineup of performers.
Such was my experience at the State Theater, complete with lovely libations (i was on duty, so did not imbibe, but i was stationed next to the bar and watched the gorgeous martinis being created)...it truly was a winter wonderland of loveliness, right down to the warm, cozy bathrooms and holiday cheer. Plus, as Allison G. pointed it out it's very convenient...footsteps from Rutgers AND from the train. And, if you need to run some errands, you are right near a post office with just about the nicest people I've ever met.
