It seems like whenever I walk into Stratos it's a party: napkins are flying, music is bumping, and people are dancing. This greek bar/restaurant has been a staple in this part town for years. Â The drink prices are great and they make the best gyro in the city. The menu has a mix of Greek classics (I always get some dolmathes) and basic Mexican cuisine. Solid spot for lunch but the time to go is Friday or Saturday night. Opa!
Review Source:No wonder the place was pretty much empty. You can see it right away with a deserted parking lot but I decided to give it a chance.
Most disappointed. They have dance floor and dj playing and ironically the waitress said that manager asked for our kids to be seated and not dancing on "dance floor". Food proportions were small and took forever to bring over the dishes. Menu is overpriced for the quality they give and tip is not optional. I had ticket for 3 people and the they included the tip in it. So they decided the amount I should pay for their poor service. Never going back to that place ever.
I'm not really too sure where I stand on Stratos. Â I think that I would have to give it barely 3 stars on food, and a solid 5 stars for its Friday and Saturday night belly dancing. Â Seriously, I would recommend going there only on a Friday or Saturday night and for appetizers and drinks only. Â
The food is fairly mediocre to low end with the exception of about 3/4 of the appetizer menu. Â Just grab whatever the grape leaf rolls are called, several beers, and watch the immense awkwardness as drunk 30something and older birthday parties try to dance on the tables alongside the belly dancers while the owner makes it rain with napkins. Â It's truly amazing to witness.
ok....so shout out to my yelp friends robyn & her guy roderick!! we met up here last night....the atmosphere here is just chill & so inviting!! our waitress was very friendly & very suggestive once i let her know it was my 1st time there!! people they have the best happy hour...everyday 11-7...what!!! you can't beat this!! the margaritas are small but powerful...trust me!! i lost count but them bad boys snuck up on me real quick lol!! the waitress (along with other reviews) recommended the calamari & i'm glad i followed those suggestions...the batter on the calamari was crispy but not hard & the calamari was definitely fresh & seasoned perfectly! my girl had some steak souvlaki....i'm not a steak person but she loved it...said the steak was cooked perfect & it was very tender...veggies included!! i just kind of nibbled...mainly wanted to take advantage of the happy hour...boy did i ever lol!! but i will be back to try the gyros....thanks for coming into my life stratos!!! opa
Review Source:We drove across town to try this restaurant because we had a coupon from Passport and because of the "best Greek in Dallas" reviews.
Not impressed.
First, our coupon had expired by a few days. Â I asked the manager (via the waitress) if he would accept it because the new Passport had not arrived. Â He said no because they were not going to advertise in Passport again. Â And then I get my Passport booklet today and there Stratos is...pffftt.
I was excited to see that they had taramosalata on the menu. Â First time I've seen it in Dallas. Â Well, this was NOT taramosalata--it was mashed potatoes with maybe a tiny bit of taramo mixed in! Â Very disappointing.
I had the mousaka and it was ok, but certainly not the best I've ever had. Â My friend had the gyro and said it was good.
We were there mid-afternoon and there were only a few other customers--no festivities, which was fine for us. Â Stratos may be really fun at night, but I'll never know because I won't ever go back.
Best Greek in Dallas? Â Well, maybe, but don't be fooled into thinking that means it's excellent. Â It just means there's not much competition.
This is the best place to go and have awesome food and having a good time in Dallas, the food is just amazing, I have taste every single item in the menu, everything is good and well priced. Â The calamary are the best I ever had, the gyro sandwich is just out of this world, even the burgers are good. Â Fresh pita bread with lemon butter,, yummy. Â oh and they have the best crew/bartenders in town, you will feel like part of the family, i promise...
Review Source:I got the chicken gyro to go. The lunch special comes with french fries. Since I don't eat FF, I got the gyro combo, which comes with a SMALL Greek salad that costs $2 more. Why does subbing healthy choices have to cost so much more? Â Anyways, the dressing was yummy and I loved the feta cheese on my salad. Â The gyro was HUGE but the chicken was tasteless. It didn't really taste like it had been marinated or anything. I had to add a lot of salt (which I rarely do) and it didn't rescue my gyro. My bill was over $11 for the sandwich and salad, so I don't think I'll be going back soon.
Review Source:My group and I found this Greek restaurant by accident. Here are my reviews:
The Good:
The food was delicious.
-the calamari appetizer was fresh and tender
-the gyros were delicious. soft, tender meat (lamb, or mixture), fresh tomatoes and onions, with a very soft, warm pita bread.
Food was served in a timely manner.
Prices and portion sizes were decent for the lunch menu.
TV's throughout the restaurant have several events to watch.
Lovely family photos (and photos of Greece) hanging throughout the restaurant.
A giant flat screen TV plays a video of an aerial view of Greece. Beautiful!
The Bad:
Although the restaurant has an interesting and spacious layout, it's obvious that it used to be a strip club. The walls, floors, tables...everything is EXTREMELY DARK and drab. If only the walls were painted in a bright, clean white or light color it would make a considerable difference in the way it looks, and make the restaurant feel more like a restaurant and less like a strip club. Very weird and kind of creepy.
While our food arrived quickly, our waitress never came to our table to refill drinks etc. Being a slow day, there were no waitresses in earshot to call for refills etc. They all congregate at the bar area on the other side of the restaurant. I shouldn't have to get up to find a waitress.
The attire for the waitresses is inappropriate. Very short skirts/shorts is kind of creepy for a Greek restaurant.
Not the best of neighborhoods.
For the food alone I would recommend this restaurant, just close your eyes while you eat.
Still good Greek food, hot scantily clad waitresses, warm pita and tasty chicken. Â Monday and Tuesday nights are half price entrees with beverage purchase which makes it a really cool Tuesday date night place. Â No belly dancing tonight, 2 dudes with guitars which was a bit loud and just okay. Â The beer was cold, the food was food, the service was attentive. Â Still a big fan of Stratos. OPA!
Review Source:Since the demise of Goldfingers, Stratos and Zorba's* are my only Greek choices. By comparison, Stratos is a festive experience - lively, lots of Opa!s, grade A belly dancers, salsa dancing sometimes, and more. The audience can strongly participate too. Most patrons are conducive to spontaneously chatting it up with them even though they're complete strangers. Â It might be as much fun as you can get north of Scarborough Faire!
That participation is optional; if you're private or squeamish or want the quietest experience, ask for a back booth (semi-walled off) or maybe front patio seat. Note however that, to their immense credit, the music is NOT too loud - which ruins many places. When there are not entertainment acts it's nice strumming Greek music.
The menu is superb to me, and for taste and quality and temperature and doneness I'd easily go 3.5/4. Service is friendly and patient, even with a Thursday 9 PM full house. Â Our souvlaki and our scallops came out in 6 minutes even then.
The bargains are dessert and coffee. Â 2 can share the yummy Kastro Baklava. Â Their proud specialty Greek coffee did not seem at all too strong to me; if that matters to you then cream it down or they'll whip cream top it too. The real deal is the liqueur option (like Baileys, Sambuca, several others). It's like getting a fancy specialty drink for about $6 vs. $10 at other places. And they're justifiably proud of the coffee itself.
Flaming Saganaki, entrees, 2 Greek beers (easy to drink lagers, $5 or $6), dessert and 2 spiked coffees, tax and tip sent the bill up to $100 so watch yourself. It's just so FUN that you can get carried away. Our entree choices were a bit pricey, but truly gourmet.
Read the story of the owner on the drink menu. Ask to meet the owner or his son, great people, great fun, as I have found each member of their staff to be on multiple visits.
* footnote: Â Zorba's is very dear to me but is in the red light camera bastard town of Plano, whose businesses are being boycotted until they pressure the city to rid those cameras. I may violate the boycott for Zorba's, but if I only have Stratos for Greek food, I'll die happy.
First time here, and we loved it. We were a little nervous because this isn't such a nice part of town. Â But once we arrived, we were glad we were there. The staff was very friendly and provided excellent, quick service. Â They seated us on the upstairs patio and it was lovely (fortunately weather was good)! Â The downstairs patio is nice, too, although there were people smoking on it. Â The whole place is nice, really (former strip club, LOL - you can't go wrong with leopard carpet), and it's huge. Â It would be good for groups. Â
From 5-7 they have happy hour $2 margaritas, mojitos, and mimosas. Â Wow is all I can say. Â They brought them out and they were not the tiny little $2 drinks that you would expect. Â Even a typical mojito is pretty small, but they brought them out in beer mugs! Â Yummy.
For food we got the 4 dips sampler (baba ghanoush, tzatziki, hummus, and garlic dip). Â It was good, but the entree (souvlaki) was delicious! Â The rice, sauce, veggies, etc. were soooo good. Â The portions were large, too. Â I was hoping to get the Aphrodite dessert but I didn't have room. Â I will definitely go back, but I will skip the appetizer next time, since the entrees come with pita, tzatziki and hummus anyway. Â Either that or just get an appetizer, such as the humongous sampler, and dessert!
Come for the fun....NOT the food.
We went on a busy Friday night with a http://restaurant.com certificate. 7:30 and already the place was hopping. We had reservations so were seated promptly. Let's start with the only reason to come here: Entertainment. And it's not all about the belly dancers. If you want to see drunk women in their 4" heels teetering on tabletops while trying to pretend they can keep up with the belly dancer, this place is for you. Also, be prepared for nonstop noise. Don't try to come here for quiet conversations.
Now for the food. Alcohol would've helped. Everything came out very quickly, which is never a good sign. For appetizers we ordered Flaming Saganaki, Tzatziki & pita, and Octapothi Krasato. The flaming cheese was ok (I ordered it more for show), and the tzatziki was decent, but nothing better than you would get prepackaged in a supermarket. But ah... the octopus....was horrific. I wasn't even sure what it was until my husband said what he ordered. The texture was definitely something that had not only been frozen, but frozen for a very long time.
For dinner we had the lamb souvlaki and rack of lamb. Both were served with lackluster rice and veggies. My rack of lamb (4 lamb chops) were ok. Cooked the way I ordered (medium rare) but were fairly flavorless. They were served with a cup of what I could swear was Heinz bottled brown gravy. Weird. My husband's souvlaki came with a cup of some cream gravy that possibly was in the room with a lemon. Once my husband squeezed his entire lemon into it, it was fine. But still...weird. Our friend ordered the moussaka, which she said wasn't any better than "just ok".
Meanwhile the entertainment was getting drunker.
For dessert we had the "home-made" baklava and galaktabouriko. Both seemed almost as old as that octopus. I didn't think I would ever need a knife with a custard dessert, but there you have it. The flavor was good though.
We still had a wonderful time. The service and general attitude of the staff was great. Fabulous people watching. Thankfully we had that coupon, but it was still overpriced for food that I seriously doubted was made on premises. Or if it was, it was cooked days ago.
This is a different, in a fun kind of way, place to go to. Â My bf and I came here on a Sunday evening and there were belly dancers partying the night away. Â We saw about 5 different dancers and we got there at 7:30pm. Â There were young and older dancers, all which were good at their jobs.
We started out with Nick's Greek Sampler. Â The sampler was way too much for only two people, unless the plan is not to order entrees to following the appetizer. Â The spanakopita was ok...the texture of the phyllo dough was right on. Â The hummus and pita bread was the best part.
I ordered the Stratos Gyro combo. Â The gyro was so delicious, but I couldn't even get through eating half of it since I was already full from the appetizer. Â The combo came with a Greek salad, which I didn't get to taste, so I am not sure if it was good or not.
My bf ordered the Stratos Meat Lover Combo. Â That gyro had so much meat in it that it seemed to be a joke. Â The kitchen also didn't dress the gyro with the lettuce, tomatoes, and tzatziki sauce. Â I definitely wouldn't recommend the Meat Lover Combo since you have to try to dress it yourself, with absolutely no room inside of the gyro to do so.
I would probably come back again.
Wow! Stratos is quite the adventure. Â
After driving by for YEARS, I finally stopped in for dinner and it was a hilarious, delicious, out of body experience.
Upon walking in, we were promptly seated by friendly staff and then saw that none other than Elvis was taking the stage to provide some entertainment to the crowd. Â It was a Wednesday so not only did we have Elvis there but wine by the glass and bottle is half off.
The food came out quickly and our waiter was happy to offer suggestions since we had never been there and they all have crazy long Greek names that I couldnt pronounce even if I was drunk.
We had the Greek pizza which was fantastic!!! Â Definitely a must order. Â We also had the flaming cheese which was good but very thick, a great appetizer for a larger group.
The best part of the meal was the Baklava Ice Cream. Â A few scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with chunks of baklava - Â yummmm.
I definitely will come back here and it is the best place to go for out of town guests who just want to have fun and do something out of the ordinary.
Gyros & hummus!!!!! Every time I go I say I'm going to get something else........but I don't! Everything looks & smells delicious but I love hummus w/pita bread & gyros! Lol! If you go in the evening you'll even get a great show by the Elvis impersonator (LOL!). I actually love the upstairs balcony, great views of the planes landing at Love Field & on a breezy night, it's wonderful. Love this place...OPA!
Review Source:Excellent Greek food in Dallas, which is hard to come by. The location is straight up hood, but it's well worth taking a risk to try Stratos. The Gyros are phenomenal, the avgolemono captures the best qualities of a lemon in a hearty soup and the flaming saganaki is enough reason to return. I love Stratos.
Review Source:Tim is right, this place is located in a shady corner of Dallas with bright neon lights... Very odd for a Greek place.
I came here for dinner with my friend. We ordered Calamari, Steak Gyros and 2 Desserts (i can't quite recall the name of). They seated us in this corner that looks over the restaurant, which i thought was awkward. But now, it makes more sense, place was a former strip club.
The server was attentive in the beginning but we had a hard time waving him down near the end of our meals. Our Gyros was very tender, well cooked and seasoned. The dessert was nice as well, but a bit too sweet for my taste. I would come again, probably earlier in the night next time before it's dark.
He was dressed like Elvis, they called him the "King" so why the eff was he belting out BJ Thomas, John Mellencamp and Skynyrd? Â I'm so confused.
Food, not as confusing. Â Half price entrees on Monday and Tuesday nights! Â We ordered way too much food. Â Started with the baked feta appetizer--I'm about to birth a cheese baby right here on my desk. Â Followed it up with a spinach salad and that lemon, rice, egg soup. Â And THEN, as if that wasn't all ready too much food, we both had the Grecian God's Platter with lamb, shrimp scamp, steak, rice and veggies. Â I have two days worth of Greek food stinking up my fridge. Â Huge portions and very well prepared.
If you go there I would suggest you split an appetizer, order soup and/or salad and then split an entree. Â It was really too much food, and had it not been half price night it would have cost about $85 bucks for two people. Â Not sure I would have been totally jazzed by that price, even with the tasty leftovers.
The service was super friendly, little slow but I suspect it was the food actually being prepared rather than re-heated, that made things take a little longer. Â It was worth the wait. Â
On the down side, I wish I'd had a steak knife to cut my lamb, it wasn't tough, but it didn't fall apart in my mouth and the hunks were too big to pop into your mouth whole. Â And the to-bo boxes are crap. Â They do not hold up. Â I about lost my lunch twice this morning getting into the building with my leftovers.
This is the best gyro I've had in DFW. Â The interior looks like a strip club but the food is great and the waiters are very friendly.
When you go in there is a large stage for the belly dancing at night and what looks like a strip club VIP area which I've heard is the game room. Â I've only been here for lunch so I don't know what it's like at night, but they do give you a preview with their large projection screen. Â While you're eating they'll play belly dancing from what I assume are previous nights.
The waiters are always helpful and will talk you through the menu. Â If you can handle the decor I highly recommend this place.
I used to visit Stratos fairly often around 8 to 10 years ago and recently made a return trip. Â Not much has changed, and that is a good thing.
First of all, I love the ambience here. Â With leopard print carpet, granite table tops, dance stage, and DJ booth this place was so obviously a strip club 15+ years ago. Â That is part of the fun of this place though. Â It also features a outdoor seating on the patio as well as a 2nd story deck.
In regards to the food, I'm not a huge fan of the pita bread or hummus here..it's ok, but I've had better. Â My friend ordered a gyro and it was very large. Â I ordered the rack of lamb and it was truly outstanding. Â Great quality meat, accompanied with very flavorful rice and vegetables.
We came in on a Tuesday night and were informed that for Monday/Tuesday dinner if you order a drink (any drink) you get your entree for half price! Â This is just an outstanding deal and I will be coming back often.
I chuckled as I rolled up into the parking lot of this place. Â This place does not resemble a Greek restaurant. Â Not even close. Â Honestly, I'm not sure why they didn't change the exterior. Â You could drive by thinking that it was just another one of the strip clubs down this road. Â O wait. Â It once was.
Once you get past the fact that the place was once a venue for lap dances and happy endings (I know that's asking a lot) you will be happy you came. Â No pun intended. Â The food here is legit! Â The gyros here are very tender and packs a lot of flavor without being overly salty. Â I also sampled the moussaka is probably the best I've had in Dallas. Â The portions are pretty big and you're going to leave this place satisfied. Â I haven't gone when this place is essentially turned into a club and I've heard that is pretty fun. Â I'll probably come back to check that out one of these days.
Can we say... FUN!
I got a groupon to go here and have been wanting to go to this place for a long time, because it always looks like it is just a ball of fun.
So I made this my birthday gathering event, and let me just say... it served it's purpose for birthday fun. Â
The food was good, although I was pretty much distracted by the dancing and getting on tables. Â
The best part to me was that they involved everyone in the restaurant in the dances and party. Â Drinks were decent and did the job, and everyone was definitely full at the end of the meal. Â Job well done! I look forward to another special event to go to there.
I'm a big fan of Greek cuisine, and have found the food at Stratos Greek Taverna amazing and better than many other Greek places in the area. Â Everything we have tried was quite good: Hummus, Spanakopita, Tiropita, Feta Cheese, Souvlaki, Pita bread, Baklava, etc.
So, the food deserves solid 4 stars - portion was also huge, but slightly over-priced. Tips for saving $: Subscribe to the restaurant's newsletters for weekly coupons: "buy 1 entree plus 2 beverages and get a 2nd entree free"; they also offer http://Restaurant.com gift certificates.
Ambience was so-so- I'm not a night club/sports bar type of person, and it's not located in the best neighborhood. Service was OK too- most waitresses are Hispanic and some may not know Greek food that well.
We go there from time to time for its great food. :)
If you haven't been here, I don't know what you are waiting for. This place has a variety of Greek food. My favorite dish has to be the gyro sandwich. The meat is so tender and juicy. You must try the rice it is so flavorful and the taziki sauce is amazing. Â They have plenty of seating which is open and an area which is more intimate with booths. They have a happy hour daily from 4-7pm and if you come at night they have a DJ, dancing and belly dance shows that never disappoint. Â
The servers could be a little better. A lot of them don't seem to smile and be friendly.
I would like to portray this restaurant in detail however i'd leave it to people who'd visit and experience it personally. For me, I came for Greek food and it was right about my expectations. I and company ordered different items from the menu and all of us were satisfied.
I came in broad daylight, I dont know how it is in when the sun is set.
First off, their pita was AMAZING. It was lightly pan-fried on both sides, but deliciously soft and chewy on the inside. It was perfect. My friend got the baba ganoush appetizer which came with the pita, but I didn't care much for the ganoush--it was a little too liquid-y for me, and I didn't feel like it had any flavor. I ate all of the pita bread instead and was quite happy about it.
One of my other friends got the saganaki for an appetizer, and the calamari. Both were really good. Of course, the waiters brought the saganaki out and lit it on fire and urged us the shout "Opa!" It had a lot of flavor, and I could taste a little bit of the brandy they used, but the alcohol had all burned out. It was perfectly crispy on the outside, a little oozy (not enough to make a mess) and everyone else at the table agreed that it was good.
The calamari was tasty too--it was lightly seasoned, and came with a marinara and ranch dipping sauce. I usually don't like squid at all (it's so chewy and weird!) but I felt like the calamari here was tender, which really surprised me. This might have been (dare I say it?) the only time I have ever liked squid in any form. Ever.
I've only had the lack of ramb here and the Stratos Greek gyro, and if you're choosing between the two, I'd say definitely go for the gyro. They play up the lack of ramb a lot more, but I honestly felt like the lamb was underseasoned, and didn't have any kick to it. It just tasted like meat. Without any flavor. The gravy that came with it wasn't that great either--I felt like it didn't pair off the lamb well, and just felt heavy. The vegetables that came with the lamb were great, though--a little bit of oregano and lemon, and nice, crispy broccoli. I stole all the broccoli off my friend's plate.
The gyro, however, is a whole different story. The meat was really well flavored, the tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki put on it complemented the taste really well, and the pita (of course) was amazing. It filled me up really quickly, even though I was sharing it with a friend. The gyro also came with fries, which I really, really enjoyed. I love fries--fried potatoes are kind of my thing. These were thick cut, but had that satisfying crunch as well. They were seasoned with something, which I was unable to identify, but I didn't need ketchup at all, though they provided it, because it was so tasty.
We went on Saturday, which was apparently belly-dancing night. I enjoyed watching the belly dancer, although it was a little bit more casual than I anticipated. Although I was entertained, I wasn't really impressed.
The specialty dishes here are really expensive--the rack of lamb was $20, not including tip, which I totally feel was not worth it. However, the gyro was $12, including tip, and was really filling. I would definitely come back here just for the gyro.
Stratos looks more like a night club than a restaurant. It probably was one at some point of time. I havent been here for dinner, just lunch.
The lunch menu has all the greek favourites. Though some of the combos are not explained on the menu and frankly dont make much sense. But the waitress explained it to us.
The Spankakopitas are good, the Gryos are just ok. Was expecting the meat to be more succulent. Will be back to try more things.
I came here courtesy of groupon. I've always wanted to try here because I heard so many good things. Â
I was blown away by the chicken lemonatta! Â and the Baklava + Ice cream. Â OMG. Â i went back the next day w/ a friend who had the same groupon and ate the same meal all over again. Â
I will definetly be coming back!
YAY! I'm a fan, of Bachata Night on Wednesdays!!
I sought this place out, since I happened to have a different day off during the week, which gave me an opportunity to check out a new dance spot.
I am giving this place a 4 star rating, due to the great dance crowd. People showed up around 11ish and the place was full of latin buzz going on, it was great. There were all kinds of latins, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Mexicans, Colombians, Dominicans, and so on and so forth as well as other ethnic backgrounds embracing their roots of dancing. This place satisfied my craving for some dancing. They play more bachata than anything else, but they do include salsa and the occasional cha cha cha (which I absolutely think is so much fun to attempt).
The dance floor is a bit small (just giving you guys a heads up). But as long as there are people taking up that dance floor, and not just standing around, then that is a-ok with me.
As for the food, I would drop a star (3 star rating). Its not the best Greek food I've had, and if you saw my other reviews, I happen to really like Greek food. I feel as though the hummus should make a statement. If you serve Mediterranean food, then hummus should be a great indicator of what you are in store for next. The hummus I had there was ok... but I've had way better. Maybe too much tahini?? The gyros aren't too bad, but doesn't compare to Kismet or Phoenicia Bakery (Austin). I'm still looking for a good place around here... I miss my weekly trip to Kismet. However, its a nice place for a date.
The interior is maybe a notch higher than casual. There are belly dancers, which makes this place a little more attractive... Doesn't hurt to have some beautiful women rolling hips while having some drinks or dinner...
Check it out, you may like it. I can be a little harsh when it comes to some Mediterranean food, just because I like it so.
Went with my wife and son to Stratos for a Sunday lunch. Since it was Sunday afternoon, the place was pretty dead. Services was great since we were the only ones there, besides another two couples. We ordered a platter that had several different items. Some of the them I didn't care for, but for the most part, it was delicious.
The place is pretty huge and seems it can handle a big crowd. Also, looks like at weekend nights, this place turns into a club. Might have to check this place out
The location wasn't the best, but what the heck, it was day time.
I will be returning again and try different dishes. Oh yeah, when I was browsing the menu, the prices are pretty reasonable.
For such a sketchy looking place in a questionable location (reference all other reviews), the food is actually pretty dang legit! Â They have your basic Greek menu. Â I especially like their gyros and gyros plates. Â There salads are nice too.
1/2 price entrees Monday and Tuesday nights, 1/2 price wine Wednesday and Sunday after 5pm (not sure if I'd want to happy hour in a place like this!) Â They have belly dancers Monday through Thursday (why would you NOT have belly dancers on the weekend?!) Â And they have several other events to check out.
They have a decent patio, both upstairs and downstairs- the white plaster and blue metal looks kinda trashy but is supposed to be reminiscent of Mykenos (I think). Â If you're in the mood for some decent Greek and don't mind the ambiance, Stratos is A-OK!
Humongous gyros! Â One time I ordered the meat lovers' (almost twice the meat) gyro and had food coma after. Â :-) Â If you can't make it to Greece and have never tried this type of food, this is a good place to start. Â They have a sampler where you can try the typical fare - hummus (black bean or chick peas), pitas, dolmas (a rice concoction wrapped in grape leaves), spanakopita (flaky, buttery phylo dough layered with a spinach mixture, and some other goodies.
Their moussaka is ok, not my favorite place to get it. Â I have had this stuff at Greece before and could never find any that tastes quite the same. :-( Â
Surprisingly, they have good happy hour items like chicken wings (who woulda thunk?!) and a good half price wine special. Â Margaritas are on special but kind of sweet. Â I wish they would offer ouzo shots for happy hour too. Â :-(
This is a great place for larger parties or for those who want to eat, drink, be entertained by belly dancers, or get their groove on when the dj plays at night. Â I've always had fun here, whether it be with a large group of friends or on date nights.
All in all, good place - would've rated it better if the moussaka was to my liking...
I'm the mistress of skepticism when it comes to Dallas's hallowed hot spots, but Stratos caught me off guard in a good way, like knowing Sponge Bob is gay, but being 100% cool with it. Â
Anywho, 2 couples walk into a bar and order margaritas and a pita platter with hummus. Â They enjoy the soft, fluffy pita bread and decent hummus. Â Then, the 2 couples share Greekish lasagna, tilapia and the Aphrodite chocolate dessert thing, all the while savoring the gloomy interior and not-so-savory shredded tights on the waitresses. Â
In truth, the food was good. Â Maybe not spectacular, but definitely enjoyable. Â I bemoaned the lack of falafel on the menu, but it's forgivable given that falafel is actually an Arab dish. Â Thanks, Wikipedia.
We hit up Stratos moments before the restaurant turned into an all-out grind fest, but caught most of the bellydancing show. Â It was definitely a joy to see, and sneaking glimpses of the various age groups of patrons confirmed that the show was enjoyed a bit more as an artistic display rather than a rauchy acrobatic act. Â
On the way out, I noticed the patio looked like a great place to hang out and chat. Â I'm eager to catch a salsa night at this place. Â Until them, Stratos is worth a try.
Can I get a lap dance with that gyro? Sorry, sorry, I couldn't resist making a strip club comment. Actually, this whole review will involve them. I work two seconds away from here, and they give my work a 20% discount (BALLER!) so it was high time I shimmied my way over here and climbed up the pole of food (okay, that's a stretch. Ah! Another one!)
AHEM. The place is on a slightly seedy stretch of Northwest Highway across from Bachman Lake, so it has some street cred. The outdoor patio looked pretty decent, but it was blazing hot (as always) so we slunk inside. The inside is dark, a little over-the-top-tacky, with too many TVs and scented candles burning. I sat down in an oversized booth, looked at the curtains around me, and thought...Lord knows how many stains have blessed this booth. Then I thought, Who's hungry?!!! (There's a Tzatziki sauce joke here, but I'm not going to make it.)
They have lunch specials 7 days of the week, ranging from $6.95 to $11.95. I got the classic Gyro combo with a big ole Greek Salad. It was $9.95, which was a leeetle pricey. However, both the salad and gyro were big 'uns. I especially enjoyed the fluffy, soft pita bread. The meat was tender and juicy, and the Tzatziki sauce hit a home run.
My dining companion got the daily special: $6.95 for a Greek Burger. A big ole' burger with red onions and feta cheese. But they charge two extra bucks for a Greek salad instead of fries. Fine, fine.
Our waitress was extra friendly, if a little awkward. It was pretty deserted at around 1:30pm on a Wednesday, but their happy hour and brunch looked pretty promising. I just can't get past the fact that I feel dark'n'dirty there. I'm such an atmosphere snob, but perhaps it's better for dinner, not lunch. I did go back to work feeling a little naughty, and not in a good way.
Odd venue, great gyro. On the drive to Stratos we cracked jokes about how we were really going to a strip-club during our lunch hour, and not to a meal, because Stratos is located in "strip-club central". Then we get to Stratos and walk into - an old strip-club - remade into a Greek restaurant.
My friends and I had coupons (buy one entree, get the other free) and we all ended up getting gyros. My gyro was amazing and the most authentic gyro I've had since I was in Greece. The only difference being that Stratos puts their french fries on a plate and not in the gyro. Big deal, it tasted fantastic.
Although the gyros are great, the old strip-joint vibe in Stratos is a bit off-putting. There's a stage and the obvious VIP areas and it's also dark and has that "stripper" feel to it - you know, like stripper-oil as been rubbed into the walls and tables so deep that no amount of Clorox will get it out.
I would have given Stratos 3.5 stars if I could have. Resist your urge to do an impromptu pole dance and spend all your dollar-dollar bills and just focus on the gyro instead.
I like Stratos, but I don't eat here without a BOGO coupon in my pocket (sign up for the weekly email). Â Yes, they're that expensive. Â But the atmosphere is fun, especially on a belly dancing night (Thursday & Saturday @ 8:30) and the lamb chops make my husband happy. Â So, I continue to come back.
They have different specials every night that make it more affordable:
--1/2 priced entrees, Monday & Tuesday, with the purchase of a beverage per entrée
--1/2 priced wine, Wednesdays & Sundays, by the glass and bottle
--$2.50 mojitos, margaritas & bottled beer, everyday
--$4.50 appetizers (limited menu) 4-8pm everyday
The lamb chops are certainly awesome, but are $30. Â The Grecian God plate comes with 2 skewers of either steak, pork, chicken or shrimp with rice with steamed vegetables. Â That's my meal and is a more reasonable $20. Â The dolmathes are indeed a little vinegary, but I like them that way. Â I equate it to Jack in the Box tacos being junk food tacos but good just the same.
And for dessert, you must order the galaktabouriko. Â It's a honey custard dish that will make you forget completely about the Benjamin you're about to drop on dinner.
