Just- OK.
Ate there for the first time today...and while my experience was not terrible, it definitely could have been better.
The good: Better than average coffee, cozy atmosphere, decent diner food
The bad: unfriendly service verging on rude..no one greeted us upon walking into the restaurant, all of the staff members looked miserable to be there..and our waitress just seemed annoyed to be serving our table.
Probably won't be back based on the service alone.
NEVER BEEN SO DISAPPOINTED.
My boyfriend and I ordered smoked turkey sandwiches to go only to open the container, and be outraged that they charged us 7.50 for a piece of cheap wheat bread with a few pieces of turkey between it with a side of mayo, two limp pieces of lettuce, and one slice of tomato. It looked like something you would hastily put together for a 4 year old. If I had the time I would have taken the food back and demanded a refund. How this place has 4 stars is beyond me.
HATE.
Went here for the first time yesterday morning. We arrived at around 9 a.m. on a Sunday morning and were immediately seated. The waitress that we encountered was not very friendly. Even though the place was not crowded and they have multiple waitresses waiting tables, she seemed to be in a rush. Not a plus.
We both ordered the Sunrise Special, consisting of eggs, bacon or sausage, hash browns and pancakes. Overall, the food wasn't bad. The bacon did not have much flavor, although the sausage was pretty good. The hash browns weren't too greasy and tasted pretty good when mixed with the eggs. The pancakes were very delicious and I could not get enough of that maple syrup!
Although the prices were decent, I know of much better breakfast places (Sweet Maple Cafe) that have much better service. I don't expect to go back to this place.
My favorite kind of breakfast/brunch spot. Not too flashy, not too loud, has character, coffee refills at an appropriate frequency. Not expensive but not cheap. I got the Sunrise Special - eggs, bacon, pancakes for $8. That's a good deal for sure. Nice staff. What more can you ask for? Maybe the place could use some brighter colors to give it more light, but otherwise, no complaints. I'll be back for sure.
Review Source:This restaurant is a decent, no muss no fuss, sort of breakfast joint. The food is alright and the prices are reasonable.
The decor is minimal, with christmas lights that they "revamp" every now and then depending on the season.
This restaurant is CASH ONLY so please remember to bring some with you. There is an atm inside, but who wants to pay a service charge just to be able to pay for their breakfast? However several of the neighborhood restaurants in that area seem to be cash only.
I revisited this place after I read Aurore's review again.
As for decor, this place is a plain and subdued diner with well-worn booths along the sides and small tables lining the middle of the cozy space.
Despite its modest looks, this place delivers a solid square no-nonsense 2 by 2 by 2 like no other place in this part of town. Even with a bit of gourmet flourish. For one of the 2's, you can even get nice thick chewy pieces of applewood bacon. And for your coffee, diner coffee has been upgraded to a $2.50 cup of Intelligentsia. This might even be a better price than at the Intelligentsia coffeebar (but if so, why is that the case?!)
I recall there's a nice intimate outdoor area in the back.
In a nutshell, It's decent greasy diner food. I've definitely had better, but it's cheap and the food is pretty tasty.
My sunrise special was good, but my gf got a skillet, which was not very good. The veggies were barely cooked and it was way too greasy.
Also, they weren't too busy when we went, and it took a while for them to bring the food out...some was burnt
This is my new favorite place for  breakfast. I have only been once so I am not quite ready to give out five stars, but after another visit or two, I am very confident I will be increasing my rating.  Everything is fresh, prepared quickly and tasted great.  It also has a Mexican flair which is perfect for me because I prefer things with a little more spice.
The only thing I could see being an issue here is it is very small and seating is limited so I could foresee a few long waits.
Size aside, anytime I am in the area around brunch time, I will be here.
They've improved the quality of the chicken fried steak! Â Much better tasting. Yum-o. Â Now if that was done as a sandwich... Â On Texas toast. Â Kinda like Sonic. Haha.
The taste of the burger is much tastier as well, especially with the option of having the egg as a topping!
Also free WiFi is helpful too, when signal might be spotty or trying to not drain the battery of your cellphone using the cellular networks.
I have to say I like this little place very much. Â It's friendly, the service is very good and the food is terrific. Â We arrived on a Saturday morning for brunch, and I was afraid we would either be waiting for an hour, or not get in at all. Â But we got seated within minutes, and I don't believe that was a fluke because without pushing people out the door after they've eaten, Sunrise Cafe seems to be very good at keeping the turnover quick.
The biscuits and gravy were really terrific. Â The biscuits were tender and flakey and the gravy had just the right amount of pepper in it. Â My dining companions said the eggs were excellent, and the hash browns were very good. Â The portions here aren't huge, but that's actually a good thing. Â We didn't leave feeling as if we couldn't go on to do what we needed to do the rest of the day. Â Big plus.
Another big plus? Â Intelligentsia coffee. Â You know you've scored when they serve Intelligentsia.
I received the following phone call from a friend at 9am on a Saturday: "Angie, I'm up, bored and hungry. Â Want to get breakfast?" Â I respond with, "Yeah, sure. Â As long as we can go somewhere I can be unshowered and wearing my glasses. Â Probably yoga pants, too." Â My friend says, "Dude, let's go to Sunrise." Â I respond with, "Done. Â Meet you there in 20 minutes."
It's that kind of place.
While I highly doubt the Food Network will be knocking on the door anytime soon to showcase their creative food (because it isn't creative in the slightest), I like that there's a very reasonably priced diner serving up standard diner fare a stone's throw away from my house. Â And yes, you can definitely wear yoga pants. Â In fact, I showed up wearing the same shirt I'd worn to bed Thursday night, threw back on Friday for the day and wore to bed again on Friday night. Â #noshame
I had a cheddar and tomato omelet that was really great. Â Again, we're not talking anything flashy, but that's OK sometimes. Â The hasbrowns were nice and crispy, too, which is incredibly important.
I also love that Sunrise Cafe is never really that busy. Â I like to linger a bit over my coffee sometimes and chat with my dining companions, but since most brunch places are so fucking crowded on the weekends I feel bad sitting at my table any longer than necessary. Â I'm one of those evil bitches that stares people down that are clearly just squatting at a highly coveted table wishing they would just get up already and let me eat my overpriced eggs. Â I don't have to be that evil bitch at Sunrise Cafe. Â In fact, I can BE a squatter since there are always a few open tables and no one's waiting to be seated.
Quick and dirty brekkie. Â I like it. Â Oh, and I spotted TWO cops eating here. Â Cops always know good food.
Cash only. Â Easy street parking.
A hidden gem for breakfast and lunch in Ukrainian Village!
Super affordable, good laid back service, cute diner decor, no pretense. They also serve Intelligentsia coffee! I dig this place. Bonus points for no wait at prime Sunday brunch time. I'm a fan.
Reminder: This place is cash only!
Sunrise is my go to spot for breakfast. They serve breakfast and lunch daily from 7am to 3pm. They offer your typical breakfast plates - eggs, pancakes, waffles just to name a few and lunch items such as sandwiches, salads, and burgers. A bonus for you Intelligentsia fans, they exclusively serve Intelligentsia coffee. It looks like your typical diner but is a true hidden gem with their top notch service and delicious home made meals. They recently have adopted the cash only policy so be sure to hit the ATM before you come. In case you forget, they have an ATM in house.
Best breakfast item is the Smokey Mountain Eggs - biscuits with sausage gravy topped with 2 eggs any way you want it (my preference: over easy) with 2 slices of bacon on top. The Smokey Mountain Eggs by far put themselves in their own category and has all the other breakfast places beat. I am forever a dedicated patron :)

I've been going to Sunrise Cafe for well over 5 years now and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Â Short story: Best breakfast for the price!!
Love this place. Don't expect an overly done up atmosphere... Do expect good food- Greek omelet is to die for. I always get a short stack of chocolate chip pancakes as my "dessert"! They are fluffy, soft, and exactly how your mom made them! If you don't wanna wait in the usual 60 minute line at one of the other more stuffy places near by--GO HERE!!
Went for brunch with friends - first thing to know: CASH ONLY. Â
Okay, now that we've covered that.... Pretty good for being a diner, actually. Â I got the veggie omelette, which didn't change my life - but then again, I knew I was going a boring route :) Â It would have been great with some avocado in it, just a thought. Â What was super exciting is they let me change out my hash browns for tater tots. Â Yum-O. Â
My one friend got the black bean burger and loved it. Â I had food envy - recommend it!
I'm a bit of a juice snob, and ffor not being fresh-squeezed, the OJ was still decent. Â
Our server was great - liked her a lot. Â Good with helping us choose items from the menu, and good at details like making sure my toast was buttered.
Will come back - am told they have a chicken wrap that is rockin.
I grew up with a local family run breakfast place that holds a special place in my memory banks. I have been looking for a similar kind of mom and pop shop and feel like I have found one. I sat at the counter next to the owners' son, so maybe that helped, but everyone seemed nice and friendly not only to customers, but to each other.
I had the chilaquiles and they were delicious.
There were several other menu options I want to try so I will definitely return.
I pushed the door.
I am in Normal Town, in the heart of 'merica.
In my emigrated mind fed up on countless movies, TV shows and Norman Rockwell illustrations the typical American diner looks exactly like this. Old-fashioned, with booths, ugly picture frames, American flags and a jug of coffee in the background. A little bit of wood, a little bit of grease, a couple of regulars and a board where the specials include pancakes, bacon, gravy and biscuits.
But I am just a few blocks away from home, on Chicago Avenue.
What a surprise.
But the best surprise was actually in the plate. My chilaquiles were most excellent, with the tortilla chips still crunchy and the green salsa perfectly tangy. The hashbrowns of my breakfast companion were slightly charred just like he loves them, and the pancakes......................................so freaking fluffy and delicious that I just couldn't believe it.
That's why I kept stealing bites, just to make sure.
You know....
Best part yet: unlike most of the 'hood establishments, they serve Intelligentsia coffee, and not the infamous Metropolis. I leave the latter to Batman and am happy to slurp on some good joe, anti-hero style.
I guess the sun rises late for the owner of the place since it usually opens at 7am but it's ok with me since I rarely have breakfast before then anyway.
Like my little slice of deep America.
The smokey mountain eggs will likely be the death of me. Â That plate of fat, carbs and protein has to be the best example of biscuits and gravy that I've had in Chicago and the addition of eggs and bacon make it simply delicious.
Add in really fast service from a cool server and I'll gladly come back.
A half-point off for the owner not letting us even *pay* for a side of their blueberry compote to add to the pancakes my wife got with her combo breakfast - seriously, it's not a substitution, it's an addition. Â We would have paid a buck or three for the option.
This place totally reminds me of a spot out in the middle of no-where (where I'm from) that was decorated with a lot of the same "country kitchen" garb, waitresses that you can't even tell are a waitresses and the overwhelming smell of frying butter wafting throught he air.
Shockingly, I was not hungover when I went this fine Sunday morning (also, might add, up before noon!) and can give a real-time, un-half alseep view of the breakfast here. Had the Western Omlette and had them add some feta cheese -- delish. Top off with fresh OJ and a ending bill that didn't kill the budget, good stuff and highly recommended.
This is my neighborhood go-to place.  My husband loves the Smokey Mountain Eggs, which are biscuits, eggs, sausage gravy and bacon.  I am a fan of the omelets, like the spinach and feta one I had yesterday with a side of hash browns and crispy bacon  - yum. Â
We devoured it, along with fresh squeezed orange juice, and we left full and happy.
This is my favorite breakfast place in the city. I've moved a few miles away and probably won't make the trek unless I'm in the neighborhood (I just don't feel like doing a whole lot of moving in the morning).
The staff is friendly, the food is good, and the atmosphere comfortable. Â I love their back patio. Really though, the five stars are for one thing: the Smokey Mountain Eggs--biscuits and gravy topped with eggs and bacon. Whoa. Hangover cure heaven. Â And their hash browns can only be described as "dank." I'm a bit of a diner hash brown addict, and these greasy well-browned hash browns really do it for me.
And they have Intelligentsia coffee.
It is always busy when I am there, and I eat breakfast late (say, 1pm). So anticipate a crowd, especially on weekends.
oh, and this place has killer specials if the whole biscuits and gravy thing isn't your scene.
yum.
This is a place that I'll definitely be bringing my parents to when they come to town. The dive diner atmosphere is a bit more homey than most and the specials are usually always where I find my selection. Very cozy atmosphere and there usually is room in the outdoor patio.
Somehow, I always manage to make it in here minutes before hoards of people become congested at the small entrance.
The Smokey Mountain Eggs are my go-to backup plan if no specials catch my eye, but lately I've been going with the Gourmet Breakfast Sandwhich. It's a thick slice of lean ham, smoked slice of gouda, scrambled eggs, all between a buttery croisant. That, plus a side of hashbrowns, and you won't be disappointed. It's a shame that my Kosher friends can't enjoy this sandwich, or anything that I order for breakfast.
Once my face is regular enough there, I'm sure that I'll be greeted with a pitcher of iced tea. Oh yes, they do have iced tea. That always a ton of bonus points in my book.
The only gripe I would have is that Cholula isn't available. I'll just have to bring my own.
I have a special place in my heart that does breakfast this way: eggs, toast, and breakfast meat, if so desired. Â Simple and easy. Â Don't get me wrong, I love a fancy-schmancy brekkie now and again, but my roots are simple. Â My dad brought me up to love the cheap breakfasts that kept you going all day long.
Sunrise Cafe is remniscent of those cheap breakfasts (although with a slightly higher price tag, thanks City of Chicago and big-city living). Â Friendly servers, quick refills, good coffee. Â
And excellent omelets. Â I got my usual, veggie-style, adding a bit of feta cheese, English muffin on the side (my love) AND it is important to note that they do have raisin toast as well (everyone knows that english muffins and raisin toast are the two BEST breakfast carbs out there.) Â Oh, and shredded hashbrowns? Â Yes please!
My mom enjoyed eggs florentine...and we both enjoyed the quiet clinking of a lazy breakfast joint on a Friday morning.
I'll be back, probably with Dad for his approval, when I'm looking for some good, simple breakfast (and when I'm too lazy to cook it!!!)
Reasonable prices, friendly service, it's almost never a problem to get a table, and there's sufficient greasy deliciousness to destroy even the most fiendish hangover. Â
The food is exactly what you would expect it to be, so I'm not going to offer lavish descriptions of each course. Â Nor am I going to act all surprised and offended that diner food is - well, diner food. Â It's good, you'll like it, and it's a relaxed place to spend a Sunday - or especially weekday - morning.
I suppose I could quibble that the white gravy is evidently not even remotely house made. Â But then I'd have to quibble about the fact that y'all Midwesterners think it's acceptable to put sausage in white gravy. Â Then I'd have to quibble that said gravy is served on something (delicious and surely deadly) called "Smoky Mountain Eggs" - a slice of Tennessee and North Carolina that could only be found at Damen and Chicago.
Except that after 16 years in the Midwest, I've come to like this thing you Midwesterners call sausage gravy. Â And I do like Sunrise.
We stopped in here this morning after leaving my gf's new apartment in search of breakfast. So glad we actually decided to go in here!
A typical breakfast restaurant with a lot of Mexican options (huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, breakfast tacos etc). I had the breakfast tacos, which were pretty good (served with beans and rice) and my gf had the chilaquiles, which were AMAZING.
Extremely fast service. As in, we ordered our food, and received it within 2-3 minutes. No joke. The place was packed, so they serve people quickly and get them out just as fast, but not in the sense that we were being rushed or anything. Friendly servers with good recommendations.
If you want some breakfast, come here!
I just don't know. I wanted to like this place, but with so many amazing places near it, it doesn't really compare.
It's like a cute neighborly place with sweet lady servers and fresh papers for you to read. I ordered a veggie omelet with egg whites, and added asparagus and mushrooms to it. It was really pretty great for a veggie omelet. They got the idea that I love veggies and this thing was frikken' loaded with them. They were fresh, too. I did end up dousing the whole thing in ketchup and hot sauce cause it wasn't seasoned that well, but whatever. Hash browns were great. My friend ordered the Huevos Rancheros and they looked a little disappointing. It was just some scrambled eggs with some Tostitos-looking salsa on top. Next to them was undercooked rice and refried beans. Yawn. Nothing special.
We also tried the biscuits and gravy, and the gravy was full of sausage so that was good, but it was missing a peppery, savory kick that comes with good gravy. This was really just like a step and a half up from Denny's but our total was $30!!!
After the meal, I noticed they had a specials board with a lot more interesting-sounding things than either of us ordered. If you're going to check this place out, I'd try something off the "Specials" board. I don't know. Just yawn.
I'm not really sure what is so great about Sunrise Cafe? It's a pretty straight forward diner. I guess if you order the chorizo skillet, you will enjoy the food there. But if you try to opt for the healthier options, you might find yourself disappointed.
So we order fresh orange juice, which was very bitter. Not good.
I chose to have the Omelet wrap, thinking it would be tasty, but found it to be  super bland.
On Sunday I went to Jane's in Wicker Park, much better menu, decor, music and food. The bill was the same price.
I am not impressed, but maybe that is the point.
Oh yay! Â A diner near my house that serves Intelligensia coffee. Â Mmmm, I went here with my friend for breakfast and it was delicious! Â I ordered the chilaquiles.... now being mexican, I'm pretty biased as to what chilaquiles should taste like, the ones at the diner were pretty good, not my favorite but good. Â I, however, was not a fan of the rice. Â
The service was great, very attentive staff and they even put smiley faces on the check.
The husband and I stopped in here for the first time today after completing some errands, and not wanting to stop for groceries as we had no food. Â Knowing that when my blood sugar dips it can cause a Godzilla-like response, we ducked into Sunrise Cafe. Â Despite the fact that it was pouring outside there were only two seats left at the counter, we promptly sat down and had a great waitress who compared the small and large OJs to "shot glass v. pint glass for 50 cents more." Â Sign me up, sister. Â
Husband got Smokey Mountain Eggs, which was an amazing concoction of sausage gravy, biscuits, bacon and eggs, promptly had a heart attack and died happy. Â I got the Huevos Mexicanos, which was also a very good choice. Â I don't know if it was because we were sitting right next to the kitchen, but our food came out in -- I'm not kidding -- four minutes. Â I'd normally give this place 4 stars, but what tipped it over to 5 was the fact that it serves Intelligentsia coffee (always a big plus) and the servers. Â Everyone was really kind and fun without being "I'm looking for a good tip" cheesy. Â Good times all around.
Sunrise Cafe is probably one of the best things that has ever happened to me.
At this point in my life "brunch/breakfast" has become pretty much synonymous with "sunrise cafe". I wish they had more tea options, as I am not much of a coffee drinker, but other than that - I tip my cap to thee, Sunrise.
Eat attack - this Sunday. I hope you're ready... because I sure am.
This place serves decent breakfast and lunch, and it's great when you live in the neighborhood. Â The restaurant gets pretty crowded on the weekends, so be prepared to wait for a table. My usual order of chorizo and eggs, which is served with green tomatillo salsa, rice & beans, and tortillas, is a great choice.
Their lunch is typical diner-style food like grilled cheese, BLTs, and burgers. Â Again, the food is nothing spectacular, but the prices are reasonable and it's a spot for neighborhood folk to have 2pm breakfasts on weekends.
I just went to Sunrise after living nearby for a year. I have been missing out. Its pretty cheap, very tasty, and a small, cute place for breakfast. They have really good fresh squeezed orange juice, and toast that comes buttered and toasted well-the way it should be. I had the special, egg, cheddar, and sweet pepper scramble and it was great. They even have a choice between regular, turkey, or soy sausage. Soy sausage is hard to come by in a no-frills cafe, and thats awesome!
---------- edit 6/30/05---------
I made it 5 stars because upon going back several times, I just love this place more!
