The worst chinese I've had in a long time. Â Maybe because we ordered carry out at 3pm on Mother's Day and they were busy, but the food was not fresh, all the dishes seemed to be lacking spices and flavors, the hot and sour soup tasted like water, noodles were soaking in oil, very disappointing experience, I can't believe this is Zagad rated restaurant. Â To pay over $100 for chinese food and be left with stomach aches is not acceptable, If I was dining in that restaurant I would return the food and leave. Â There are definitely better chinese restaurants in the area.
Review Source:We went here today.
The food is very good, and though the listing shows $$, meals for 3 people, even with the tip, still came out to less then $50.
They do not use MSG in their food, BUT:
1) there is MSG in their soy sauce (when I asked about MSG, they said "except of course in the soy sauce", so apparently they don't know about kikkomon, which is MSG-free)
2) when they have the lunch buffet out, they mentioned something about getting it from someplace else, and so there may be msg in that food.
The odd thing is that I've eaten there twice before, gotten the same meal, and never had trouble with msg until this time.
This place is OK. I was hoping it'd be comparable to the food you can find in chicago china town. Â
Pros: Gluten free menu (thanks, that earned you a star!!), traditional chinese food (hard to find in burbs), VERY nice staff and excellent service!!!!!
Cons: Â Pricey for the amount of food you get. Â If you go somewhere like China town, you can get the same if not better quality food for DOUBLE the portions and less the price. Â Also, my wide rice noodles with beef felt verry greasy. Â I mean, it's Chinese food, its supposed to be greasy, but I wish it was masked a little more, hahaha.
However, for the burbs, this satisfied my traditional Chinese food craving and I am thankful that it is so close by. Â I would recommend this place and I will be back whenever my craving returns! (:
Went to their Sunday buffet with a group from church. Â Food was excellent. Â But the owner(?) / manager was just plain rude. Â It almost felt like she was annoyed to have us paying customers there! Â The other attendants were fine but the manager lady was this weird, agitated character. Â Even my 13 year-old noticed (who is usually too glued to his IPAD to notice anything).
Review Source:This place was a temporary safe haven during SNOWMAGEDDON last year. Kept us warm for a while and filled our bellies. We sampled the Governors chicken, dumplings, wonton soup, and chicken w/vegetables. Unfortunately everything needed quite a bit of salt and nothing was spectacular. Service was fairly good (we had the whole place to ourselves so it better be!)
Review Source:Keeping it a 3 star review. Â I still enjoy the food I order from the Chinese menu which you have to request. Â I love the pan fried noodles with seafood and 3 cup chicken. Â I'd ask for the vinegar sauce on the side when ordering the fried fish in vinegar and sugar. Â It's just a bit too thick and sweet. Â
May be the lead waitress (she isn't the owner) read my previous review but she's just really rude whenever we come to visit. Â Glaring at us when I enter the restaurant, purposely not filling the water at our table. Â So passive aggressive. Â The rest of the staff is nice.
I went here yesterday for lunch and had a great experience. We ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken, Governor's Chicken, vegetable fried rice and Hot and Sour soup. Everything tasted great, our waiter was very attentive and other workers were very friendly. I hadn't been to Szechwan North for a few years but I will definitely be back again soon.
Review Source:Came here cuz we were in the burbs and trying to miss some of the traffic going back into the city. Since the Yelp reviews look decent, we thought we'd give it a shot. I must say, this was one time that Yelp has failed me.
Being Taiwanese, we are always in the search for good Taiwanese food and this was owned by Taiwanese people, so we thought we give it a try.
The place was deserted when we walked in as it was only 5p on a Mon. Â Ok, I know what you are thinking and no, we are not senior citizens. We were just hungry and wanted to eat.
We weren't handed the "normal" American menu because we asked to be seated in Chinese and were handed the all Chinese menu. It was a simple double sided sheet with apps on one side and dishes on the other; many of them nostalgic such as 'eggplant with minced meat,' Mao pao tofu, etc.
We decided to order:
- Dan Dan mein - Meh, I've had better. I don't recommend this dish. The noodles tasted off and the meat sauce didn't make up for it either (2)
- 'You can't eat tofu' (The best I can do with translation) - This was highly recommended on Yelp and one of their most popular dishes. So, we gave it a shot. It wasn't bad and probably the best dish we had this night. The tofu is lightly fried and then simmered in a casserole dish in a spicy meat sauce. (3)
- Chinese Broccoli with minced garlic - simple and light (3)
- Pork Belly with preserved veggie - I've had better. The meat was tough and sauce was less than desired. (2)
Our waitress was extremely nice and helpful so props for having good service in an Asian restaurant.
As much as I would like to support a Taiwanese owned restaurant, Â I can't say I would go back again... maybe their , 'American' menu is better
Good. I can't complain about this place for it was exceptionally good, However for the price I would prefer Golden Chef in Wheeling. The decor may not be up to what is expected, but the Fresh made lunches and dinners are the best around, including the Snapper and the chicken with the whitest  tenderest and largest pieces of chicken I've seen at any Asian restaurant.
Review Source:Food:
Gampong Shrimp: not bad, but a bit too sweet and kinda something I would consider an Americanized dish
3 Cups Chicken: Taiwanese dish, they do it very well here. Chicken is tender and the sauce is great. They use sake for the "chinese cooking wine" part of the 3 cups, and it was delish.
String Beans (gan bien si ji do): good
"No Tofu" or "Tofu You Can't Find to Eat" (chi bu dao de do fu): not bad but not ground breaking to be honest; this is a Taiwanese small village dish the owner said, and it's like any do fu ru (fried tofu cooked in a clay pot with some other things, some meat, veggies, sauce, etc).
"Sui Zhu Ru", fish fillet in a spicy garlic sauce: eh.
They also gave us some cold starter dishes: pickled cabbage - very good, and a spicy pickled bamboo and jalapeno dish - our friends loved this.
Service: very attentive, the owner is great, we just asked him to order some dishes for us rather than look off the menu. We were there with some friends from China and they were in the mood for some spicy food, so the owner suggested some dishes. Overall the dishes ended up not being all that spicy, but I think it's hard to find truly spicy Szechuan food in America. I'm not even sure I could handle the true spiciness.
Decor: though the restaurant front is small, the inside is rather spacious and well decorated. Nice chairs and tables, and even the plates/tea cups/silverware is quite nice for a typical small chinese restaurant.
While our dishes were good but not awesome, i'd still return since the decor and service is nice enough that I would bring guests and work clients here, and i'd keep trying some other dishes. The only thing I really didn't like was that they don't cook fresh whole fish here; almost all Chinese restaurants do, but if you want it at Szechwan North, you have to call in at least a day in advance so they can order it from somewhere. That's weird to me.
Unlike so many Chinese restaurants, who try to overcome poor quality and taste with salt, msg and sauce, Szechwan North hides nothing - they don't have to. Â The quality of the dishes are excellent - fresh. Â For those reviewers who complained about bland and undersauced food, they may not have had true authentic Chinese food. Â Chinese food, made properly, is healthy and delicious. Â Restaurant has been redecorated in recent years and is a great place to bring friends and family. Â Beautiful ambiance, quality food - what more can you ask? Â Servers are attentive and owners are present (a BIG plus!) to ensure an excellent dining experience. Â Special requests are accommodated with pleasure.
My family loves to order the pot stickers, scallion pancakes, "Vegetarian Chicken rolls" (made with tofu and shiitake mushrooms - only found in authentic Chinese restaurants), Sesame Chicken, and fresh sauteed green vegetables (we love the Ong Choy and Pea Shoots), and of course the green beans.
If you go to a Chinese restaurant on the North Shore and its filled with natives of China, you know that you found a good spot. The food is always fresh and the prices are reasonable. I never have had a bad meal here and there are a few signature dishes that are fantastic. I would go with the Mongolian Beef, General Tso Chicken, or Chicken with broccoli. Also, the shrimp dishes are quite good as you can taste the freshness. The service is good and the owners are nice people. You can't go wrong either picking up or eating in the large, clean, restaurant. Plenty of parking.
Review Source:I'm really impressed by this restaurant, tucked away in the corner of a strip mall not far from my home. Â They have a nice buffet at lunch...maybe 12-14 items. Â The hot and sour soup is excellent. Â But my favorite dish is the Ma Po Tofu. Â They use the silken, really soft, tofu here and it melts in your mouth. Â I'm also impressed with their Kung Pao dishes...nice and spicy...with crispy, fresh veggies.
They serve great Szechuan food here! Â If you're on a tight schedule for lunch, you can get in and out quickly by ordering off the buffet or calling ahead for carry out. Â They do a nice job with the carry out ...the food is securely packaged and there's never any spillage. If you're in the mood for a nice, quiet dinner, then this is would be a good choice as well.
It's not too far off I-294 (exit Willow Road and go east about a mile and a half), so if you're in the neighborhood, it's worth stopping in.
I went here for their lunch buffet today. The food selections were very limited. Let me start off saying that some of their dishes were a hit while others were definitely a miss. Many of the dishes lack flavor, they were bland and needed sauce or something. The egg drop soup was also bland. Also the lunch buffet did not have many vegetables, it was jam packed with meat. The chicken shumai was a miss, no flavor whatsoever!
Also the scallion pancakes were not savory, they were sweet and definitely not good in my book. The spring rolls tasted exactly like the scallion pancakes too, so not good either.
Overall, lacks in the flavor department!
My first time to this restaurant, I found the food to be fresh, but extremely bland. Â I was there with a party of 7, and that seemed to be the overall review. Â The food just being bland. Â Otherwise, it was ok. Â I would not go back. Â It is a bit pricey as well.
They didn't seem to have the heat on, which mean we all sat there and were freezing all night. Â Perhaps the furnace was broken, but it was COLD.
I've been eating at Szechwan North since high school, and I've always been pleased. If you're looking for authentic Chinese/Taiwanese food, don't order the General Tso's chicken or crab rangoon, and ask for their house specialties like their tofu dishes and fresh vegetables dishes. Great service and great food for a Chinese restaurant mainstay in the north suburbs.I even once saw the late Blackhawks owner Bill Wirtz dine here with his grandkids, and was told by the owner that he would frequent the restaurant a couple of times a month!
Review Source:This is the main place my Taiwanese parents go for Chinese food which says a lot. Â We went here for dinner tonight and it was superb! Â The best dish was the "No Tofu" which actually has tofu and pork in there. Â You can ask them to not fry the tofu if you want, which is what my parents ordered. Â I looked at the menu and I think it's actually called House Special Tofu, but my parents said "No Tofu". Very Chinese dish.
We also ordered the Beef Noodle Soup which my daughter loved. Â I ordered the Mu Shu Pork and Chow Fun noodles. Â Perfect.
My mom ordered the hot and sour soup and she said it was very well made. Â
Excellent service and the owners are very personable. Â Â I definitely will be back often.
I work just a few mins from here so we go here every once in a while for the lunch buffet. The food is solid and is always very fresh.
Some of our favorites are the crag rangoon, "empress chicken" that might not be what they call it but is basically the same thing, they have a sauteed fish dish that is very good, the shrimp is pretty good too and they have these little pieces of fried dough that are rolled in powdered sugar. Those things are crispy and addictive.
Neither the rice or the noodles are very good to me, they both border on the bland side but in combination with the other items on the buffet they are fine.
All in all a solid lunch buffet that will consistently provide the freshest food you will ever get at a chinese buffet!
Hands down the best Chinese Buffet in Northbrook area. Â I've been coming here for several years with my coworkers for lunch. Â After all these years, they still serve the freshest and tastiest Chinese Buffet in the area. Â The Buffet items has not changed for so many years, because they always serve a crowd favorite. Â From their honey style Empress Chicken (breaded deep fried chicken in a mild spicy sweet red glaze and my absolute favorite dish) Â to their shrimp and fish Szechuan style entrees. Â You cannot go wrong ordering off their lunch buffet menus. Â
Unlike allot of Chinese Buffet restaurants, where they serve quantity over quality at a cheap price, Szechuan North offers a limited number of items for their buffet, but the entrees served are one of the freshest and tastiest that I have ever tasted from an Asian Buffet. Â The chicken and beef are so tender it practically melts in your mouth, and the Shrimps and fish entrees are so succulent that they explode with so much flavor whence they touch your tongue. Â Honestly one of the best Chinese Buffet outside of China Town and the best in the burbs
Have you even gone out for Chinese and you just can't stop eating? As close friends of mine know, that is a regular occurrence in my family (since we only go for good Chinese food :) As I mentioned in my previous post on Szechwan North, it is our family favorite suburban Chinese restaurant. I was back last weekend for a casual dinner with Dan and Erica, and it was one of our best meals there ever. It appeared that they modernized their menu look and even had new plates. We've always liked the food there, but this meal was great.
We ordered pot stickers to start, followed by kung bao beef, cashew chicken (a dish we normally don't get) and string beans. It is correct to assume that we ordered a lot of food (another family tradition at Chinese restaurants), but since it was so good we were looking forward to leftovers. The only problem with that logic is that you have to actually stop eating in the restaurant to have leftovers. Luckily we did stop eventually, just with much fuller bellies than anticipated.
There are few meals I enjoy more than great Chinese food, and this was one of the better ones. I'm thrilled with any subtle changes they've made. Szechwan North remains our go-to for suburban Chinese and it should be yours too. When was the last time you couldn't stop eating at the table...
This is my go-to Szechwan/Asian restaurant. My wife and I stumbled across it a few months ago and each time we go there it gets better and better. They service is great and the overall quality of food is just as good. They have a large selection of authentic Chinese food and an even more authentic atmosphere.
The general's chicken is really great as is the mongo beef. We typically start with the spring rolls and hot mustard. I can't get enough of their hot mustard!
Took a shot trying this place out for the first time knowing it was in the area. Saw some neat Taiwanese selections in there and other selections were good too. It is a big on the pricey end, at least for dinner.
Ordered carry-out, they were right on time. I thought they had milk tea available as the menu on their website said but they said they only had the fruit kind. So was a little disappointed about that.
We ordered the mongolian beef, yu hsiang eggplant, hot and sour soup, and the cold noodle salad. I'm usually a hard critic when it comes to Chinese food. This place is a place I would try again and next time I want to order the scallion pancake to try. Mongolian beef here was quite tender and had mushrooms (good addition). Yu Hsiang eggplant was perfect for me being a eggplant lover. Cold Noodle Salad was sweeter than I am used to. I'm used to more garlicky and peanutty. This was a little different but I still liked it and would order again.
Big plus for me being a busy work-at-home mom is it has online ordering. Also I've been looking for other lunch spots to order from so next time I shall try their lunch specials and scallion pancake.
For Chinese food in the burbs, this is where I go most of the time. Ok, so I live like a ten minute walk away, but can you blame me? They have a sizable lunch buffet for the size of the restaurant and some Taiwanese food on the menu. The general's chicken is great, but if you want some sweet rice, they have it too. (or is it seasonal?)
We order carry out all the time and my family really likes the house tofu dish...healthy food peeps, listen up! Service is quick and approachable.
Oh, and for the random bubble tea junkie in me..I also love their grape bubble tea. Best grape slush outside of California!
I had the pleasure to dine inside. Â I usually order carry out but this time I was intrigued by the fresh style on the inside. Â Everything is new from a couple years ago and nicely remodeled.
Very clean restaurant and well managed. Â The service was incredible attention to detail was well appreciated. Â The dining sets were nice along with the tea set. Â Even the soy sauce dispensers were quality. Â
The vegetable spring rolls were delicious. Â I had the orange beef very big portion enough for two. Â The total bill was less then $20 for two people for dinner and complimentary tea. Â One of my favorite places to eat.
As you all know finding a good chinese place can be hard. Â Well I think that I may have found one in my "hood" Szechwan North is really good.
I usually carry out and their service is great. Â You are giving the option to place your order online. Â The process is very simple.
So if you get bored in the city and want some really good chinese in the burbs c'mon to Szechwan with me :-)
So I just moved up here a couple months ago from the city and have been looking for decent takeout places. Originally, I was hesitant about Szechwan North because it is located in a strip mall. Yesterday afternoon, we stopped by, picked up a takeout menu and went home. We ordered later that evening and it turns out to have passed all my criteria: a place that was close to my house (check), served good Chinese food (check) and where my carry out order wouldn't take forever (check).
The hubbo went over to pick up the food after we'd ordered it and said that the place looked promising, because a couple had been leaving saying how they were so stuffed and how good the food was, plus the restaurant was packed...
The pot stickers are the best pot stickers I've had in a long time. Hubby liked the Crab Rangoon a lot. The Double Fried Noodles were delish, and a different choice from your typical fried rice (but they do have fried rice, that was our decision to switch it up a bit). I had the Governor's Chicken, which I would happily have again, and my husband ordered the Beef with Orange Peel which he really enjoyed.
We discussed and decided that the food at Szechwan North is better than the food we had while we lived in Lakeview, but we still have our favorite Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. Due to time constraints, I have a feeling that Szechwan North will be getting a lot of business from us.
Consistency is important in restaurants, and this place remains high on my list of excellent Chinese restaurants in the north suburbs. We had their spring rolls (crispy) and fantastic hot and sour soup, then both the orange beef (excellent) and a shrimp dish with vegetables. Everything was delicious and we were served by an excellent waiter. Â This is a surprise find for those who think shopping strips have few good restaurants.
Review Source:The tofu casserole was a hit with our group. Â The fried rice was great, the southern style noodles were crunchy and soft. Â The sizzling rice soup is a pass -- broth needs work, too bland. Â We liked the flavor-packed Yu shiang pork. Â My dad liked that it is very clean. This place is the best place for Chinese we've found that's nearby.
Review Source:Not impressed.
I went there for lunch after hearing countless people compliment their buffet. Â I was left pretty disappointed. Â The buffet is extremely limited and in my visit, they were extremely slow in replenishing. Â In fact, my first round up, I came back with only two things on my plate and had to watch/wait for them to replace the more main dishes for 10 minutes.
They offer a weekday buffet, steep, $10.35 with tax. Â Walking in I was trying to prepare myself for the MSG stomach ache I usually get after fast food Chinese buffet food.
I was surprised with the taste and feel of the entrees and rice options. Â No ill MSG feelings, the food was light, not too flavorful but just right. Â
P.S they have General Tso's Chicken aka Governor's chicken. Â Also, their sweet and sour sauce for the egg rolls differ from the sauce offered for the sweet and sour chicken. Â Both are a light peachy tone. Â Egg roll option were spring rolls, meatless and plain. Â Everything was just alright. Â Buffet is not worth $11 dollars plus. Â
Stick with the menu and order a standard dish, do this and your experience will be better. Â I want to say the food was low fat and low sodium, which is why it sat well in my tummy. Â
Weekday noons find local business types, mostly men.
My friend and I usually get take out from Szechwan North, and it is always very good. It only took about 10 minutes for it to be ready, which is nice, and so we pretty much ordered and immediately drove over to pick up our food. The people spoke clearly on the phone, and were extremely polite and friendly when we went to pick up the food.
I got the "Your Fried Noodles", where you can pick what you want in the noodles.. (I got veggie), "Fried Wonton Chips", which were crunchy, and somewhat sweet, and a Strawberry Mango Smoothie with tapioca, which I have to say is a pretty interesting combination of flavors. All of it was delicious, and it wasn't very pricey either!
I have been here for lunches with work many times. Szechuan North has an excellent and very affordable lunch buffet.
For just $10 a person, you get some wonderful green tea and access to a lunch buffet that includes such wonderful dishes as: fried rice, steamed rice, szechuan string beans, sweet sour chicken, beef and peapods, govenor's chicken, doughnuts, almond jello, etc.
Service is attentive and you cannot beat the price!
This is one of our favorite Chinese restaurants in Chicago, especially outside of Chinatown. Â They are right on the corner of Willow and Pfingsten Road in a small strip mall which is a bit deceiving. Â The owners used to have a Chinese restaurant downtown but have relocated up to the north burbs.
The interior is very traditional Chinese decorated with this neat jade ship carved in the front of the restaurant. Â We always order from the Chinese menu for the aunthentic dishes which are really what you should be getting at this place anyway.
We always start with their small dishes and they have some fantastic pig ear. Â Their fish is always very fresh and well prepared here - we also order the manager's special tofu - directly translated, it's called "Can't eat anywhere else tofu" which is a bit spicy. Â Their beef tofu strips are amazingly good. Â My favorite favorite dish is their duck stuffed with taro which is out of this world on my taste buds.
Their vegetables are fresh and steamed/sauteed just perfectly - they use the traditional Chinese vegetables - jou tsai. Â Every time, I've been here, we always get excellent customer service and fantastic suggestions from the manager from the Chinese menu. Â I haven't had a bad dish here ever. Â And they do take reservations, as well.
This is a conveniently located Chinese restaurant that serves your typical offerings and some house specialties. Â The food is good, if nothing spectacular. Â The Governor's Chicken was the best thing I tasted there--a bit spicy and sweet. Â Service is attentive if a bit too hard sell. Â In my opinion, it's a tad too pricey for regular takeout. Â The interior--well, a bit shopping strip mall, but that's where it's located, so well, you know. Â Not exactly a hot spot for the under-sixty crowd.
