Finally went to Tavern On France after a few years of driving by! Â There were 5 of us for dinner, and we all definitely enjoyed it. Â The service and food were both better than anticipated. Â We had the make your own burger (excellent) and make your own pizza (excellent also!). Â Buffalo chicken sandwich was very good. Â Prices were reasonable and portions were large! Â We'll be back!
Review Source:This place has definitely gone down hill for me. Â We used to love coming here for the drinks, but now they're just watered down and a waste of money. Â Our food was cold, the waitress extremely slow. Â Our waitress went off duty and nobody else took over, even tho we had ordered dessert. Â So we sat there, waiting for 15 mins before my bf went and asked what was going on. Â Turns out our desserts were just sitting in the back and nobody could be bothered to serve them to us. Â We will NOT be coming back to this place anymore.
Review Source:When I lived in Minneapolis, I drove past this place a thousand times on my way home from work. Its location seemed convenient, so one day mid-week when my parents wanted to meet up for apetizers and a drink I suggested Tavern on France.
While we didn't have a full dinner, I can tell you about my experience. First, the parking lot is tight. People herd to this place for happy hour and sometimes it can be a battle to find a parking spot.
Once we were in the door, it was another twenty minute wait for a spot. That's fine, but the delay only increased my expectations and appetite. Unfortunately, Tavern on France was not up to snuff.
We ordered bruschetta and drinks. I had a bloody mary. The bruschetta was good, if nothing out of the ordinary, but my bloody mary was terrible. The place billed it as something special, with tons of customization options, but special it was not. It tasted like a watered down can of spaghetti-o sauce (This is not a hyperbole, seriously) and the edible sides were nothing extraordinary.
Summary: The place is busy, mediocre and has terrible bloody mary's.
My wife and I were able to get away from the kids for a date night at Tavern on France. Â Thanks Grandpa and Grandma! Â We both ordered the build-your-own pizza. Â Mine consisted of red bourbon sauce, basil, carmelized onions, Â olives, Â mozarella, avocado & prosciutto bits. Â I am a big fan of wood-fired pizzas. Â Though the pizza was certainly tasty and we had plenty of leftovers, there were some things I would have wanted. It was fun to see the Oregon and Washington beers on tap. Â That's always a plus.
Review Source:Waiting for tables seems to always be the case (not sure if they take reservations) so the bar is always ready to keep you occupied. Drinks are moderately priced, and the happy hour specials are also average.
The waitstaff are good with suggestions, and from my experience know how to recommend food well. I was near a table with many children and a large family gathering but overall the noise levels were not loud or unbearable for a dinner setting.
The food was good, and offered some twists to classic favorites at the time.
If you brave the parking lot here and actually find a place to park, this place is certainly worth giving a shot! It did take me a while to find a parking spot, though, and even then, I had to walk quite a ways from my car to the front door.
Once inside, be prepared for a wait. During dinner, this place is packed... no matter what day you go on! It's packed for a reason, though: the food is excellent.
If you can get there for happy hour, that's the way to go! The onion rings are delicious, and you get a ton of them! Also, the build your own pizzas are only $8 during happy hour and are excellent.
During happy hour, service can be fairly slow. But, it's otherwise pretty decent.
While this doesn't make my list of favorite places to go in the city, it's definitely worth trying.
I don't really understand why this place is so popular... Â Location, maybe?
The food is sub-par and not very innovative AT ALL. Â The greatest thing about their menu is the "build your own ______" but that's only good because I'm doing all of the thinking for you. Â The crust on the pizza is crispy and yummy.
The patio is nice, when you can get in quickly.
**3.5 stars**
**Reviewing Happy Hour Only**
Monday-Friday 3-6PM and 9PM-close
TAVERN SLIDERS ($5): 3 mini beef burgers with cheese and bacon- this definitely satisfied my munchies and was too much for 1 person!
WAFFLE FRIES ($5): comes with a lot, but the sauce was very weird in my opinion... it was too sour or something!
Drink specials: $2 off cocktails and wines, $3 off draft beers; the POMEGRANATE MOJITO was sweet, but the GINGER MOJITO was too overwhelming of ginger. Â
Service was friendly as well. Â I would probably go back for HH!
Not sure what the food is like and their well vodka was AWFUL (I didn't do the ordering for t his one), their specialty drink with mint & peach in it is good. Â My problems come from the incompentent staff. Â We took forever to get our drinks and gave our server cash for a few and cards (written on the receipt with names) for the others. Â She charged my girlfriend's card for the full amount thinking that the $30 in cash was her tip. Â Ps on a $40 bill. Â It doesn't take common sense. Â We had to rush out for a movie, so we didn't have time to wait for a manger and all this girl could say was I am sorry and not here is your cash or let me get a manager.
Review Source:Been to Tavern on France many times. Yes the place is noisy but the burgers are pretty darned consistent and the build your own concept is cool. Â Not a fan of the build your own salad (pretty bland). Â Pizza is decent, more of a flat bread.
Sunday morning brunch is very good and a decent value. Â Only tip is to skip the caramel rolls they bring to your table, better stuff to be had at the buffet.
Only had meals at the Tavern on France, never drinks so can't comment.
AVOID Tavern on France. The City  of Edina now has one less-consumer after my visit there.
There was a large group of us meeting at TonF Friday evening prior to our movie. 9 of us total. We had a large back booth and a side table to accomodate all of us. We were not there very long due to our showtime. A few of us had time for ordering two drinks, but the majority only had one cocktail. One of us, marked each item with our initials on it, and if there was a Credit Card charge or cash. We thought we handled our bill quite clearly. Apparently not.
When our server came back, I was DOUBLE Charged (bill should have been $15, not $30). Not only did she not offer to correct the problem, but our server pocketed the $15 in cash that was hers, THEN kept my additional $15 that was overcharged.
Here comes the best part: When we asked to see our bill with all of our initials on it, she stated that she threw it out and the bill was ALREADY IN THE DUMPSTER. She managed to get all our credit cards rung up, yet had time to 'conceal the evidence?" THIS PLACE IS SHADY! When our server , young redhead, told me she was 'sorry and my response was "Sorry?!! For ripping me off, if you were sorry- you'd give me my balance back!" We were now late for our movie time and I had no patience for a place like this.
That Manager needs to know that server blatantly ripped his patrons off. And there's NINE of us to prove it!
This place has a great patio - lots of casual seating to fit any type of dining adventure. I've heard that the burgers here are great, although I haven't tried them. The one thing I can say is that its portion sizes are HUGE, so order wisely -you probably won't leave hungry. Drinks are just ok, I would stick with beer or wine instead of a mixed drink. I ordered a big ginger made with house-made ginger ale, but it was slightly watered down. The patio can get very busy but the restaurant is large inside with ample seating at the bar if you are here for happy hour - they do offer really great happy hour specials on both food and drink.
Review Source:My Boomer dad and his girlfriend are complete devotees of this place, which at first made my shy away from it. It is one of the only games in town. It's always crowded, waits can be horrendously long. Crowd skews older and office park employee. Closes at 1 am on the weekends. Food is good but there's nothing unique about it...but they do a good pizza, burger, appetizer, etc. Very "Edina" crowd, if you don't like that, you might be a little annoyed. Indoors it can be pretty loud during peak dinner hours.Crowd gets a little younger and more relaxed in the summer. The patio fire-pit in the summertime is where every Edina mom that smokes comes to escape persecution and puff a few with her friends.
The best things: the wait for food is never long (once you can get a table). The staff is pretty friendly. The food, while standard American fare, is pretty good.
What has bumped this up to four stars for me after a couple years of going here is the patio and happy hour in the summer months. I'm a late eater, so being able to roll in after 10 pm and get happy hour specials is a big plus, there place has usually cleared out by then, and you can sit on the patio without being under the blazing summer heat. It does suffer from ubiquitous Minnesota Restaurant Patio with View of Asphalt syndrome, but they do a decent job of shielding it with landscaping.
I've usually been a fan of the Tavern, they have great food and reasonable prices, but the service tonight was very disappointing. The manager made up for it by taking one of the items off our tab, but it was shocking how many different people we asked to help us get a missing element of a salad and none of them actually came through for over 15 minutes. That was on top of having to be asked twice to bring a plate of bread, since we were famished and also twice for a side of marinara sauce to go with the wife's raviolis. It's one thing to have one lousy server, but four? It's difficult to forgive. Good thing the food is pretty reliable, as my earlier review states. But be wary of their service, especially on a Friday night.
Review Source:Tavern on France was recommended for us by friends. While it was not a complete disappointment, we were surprised that people had such high regard for it.
Our positive thoughts:
- the seasoned sour cream was excellent
- the malbec was smooth and tasty
- the toppings on the widow maker burger were good
Need for improvement:
- by far the LOUDEST restaurant I have been to in the last 10 years (poor waitress had to lean over as we screamed our order, I had to carefully watch my wife's lips as she mouthed the word "water"
- the actual burger itself was tasteless and was pre-formed (a sign it was a frozen patty?- not sure)
- Applebee's has a better beer selection (coors and miller beers with summit EPA being the most "unique")
- the pizza crust wasnt any better than a stale saltine cracker...wish i was exaggerating!
I wish I could write a better review but seriously our disappointment was bad enough to be a part of our dinner conversation.
Eh. Â I was in the area (shopping at Southdale) and it was time for dinner. Â I had heard from several people the food was awesome. One time I had stopped by and the wait was 1 hour and 20 minutes. Â I was thinking this place must be awesome. Â
Welll....I don't think it was awesome.  I think it's average american food but I guess it has lots of options.  Like, I had a build your own chicken sandwich.  It was very ok...but it did have lots of choices.  I could see where this would appeal to people since the interior is nice.  But to me it looks  and tastes like all the rest of the chain like restaurants in the twin cities.  I don't think I will be back.  Sorry. :/
Unbelievably slow service and mediocre food. Â Promised a 30 minute wait that took 45 minutes and when we were finally seated, there were at least 5 tables open. Â Front of the house needs some training.
Food is fine, but agree with the comments on the complicated menu. Â Despite these shortcomings, this place seems to be thriving - its packed even on week nights. Â Go figure.
I've been here twice recently - once for dinner and once for happy hour. I was surprised at how busy it was on a Wednesday night when I went for dinner around 7pm. There was a 30 minute wait and they don't take reservations. We did find out after we got there that we could have called ahead to put our name on the wait list. I had the Buffalo Chicken Pizza and my date built his own burger. We were both happy with the food. The atmosphere is nice, but it was really loud in the restaurant so it was hard to carry a conversation without yelling.
Happy hour wasn't very happy when we realized that they don't offer discounts on drinks, only food. But that's a city law they don't have any control over so I don't hold that against them. This time there was no issue getting right in for a table, and we chose to sit in the bar area. It wasn't nearly as loud this time either, but it also wasn't as busy. They do have some good food options for happy hour prices including $4 off a pizza. The pizzas are large enough for two so it does make a good, cheap dinner. We had four beers and a pizza for $26. I would definitely come back.
This place seriously reminds me of granite city but for locals. Same concept only different is that one is a chain the other is locally owned.
One reason why i love this place is because of the build your own pizza, salad or burger. I keep coming back to make my own brick oven baked pizza with the white sauce you really can't go wrong soooooo good! Plus the pizza is included in their happy hour. Â Their sides are huge we ordered waffle fries and onion rings they both come with the same dipping sauce and could feed a table of 4! The entrees are just ok though nothing out of the world that would make me drive down to Edina from Apple Valley for.
I would give it a better rating but since its so much like the chain restaurants there nothing special that makes it stand out :( other than the chocolate mints that they leave in the bowl in front of the store I always love grabbing 2 one for now and one for later.
Popped in with colleagues at the end of a day, for a drink and nibbles. This is a great spot for a happy hour, a lively bar to have a drink with friends / colleagues, and the restaurant area looked inviting, too. It has a feel of a brewery and steak-house, rolled into one.
The bar was running a create-your-own pizza special: the men went all crazy and creative, trying to come up with an impressive combination. I noted the gluten-free dough option, and arranged for a vegan pizza to be made. It was absolutely delicious!!! We all had a couple of rounds of drinks; my pizza went great with a glass of Malbec. It was actually yummier than their version, drenched in cheese.
The service was polite and efficient. I enjoyed the vegan pizza so much, I came back the following eve (by myself), just to enjoy one more before I headed back East.
Went here for dinner on a thursday at 5:30 and the place was packed! I was skeptical based on the reviews.
I and my dad both ordered the tavern grilled club, he ordered with a side salad  i ordered mine with the waffle fries with seasoned sour cream. The seasoned sour cream was great, the waffle fries were good but could have been a little bit more crispy. The club was excellent and filling. Neither of us were able to eat the full sandwich. In fact we both left with half a sandwich. I could see that being a club worth craving and clubs seem to be a dime a dozen to be able to stand out means they are doing something amazing!
I am curious about the rest of the menu being that this sandwich was excellent!
They have huge servings of your typical American food, but have a cool option of building your own burger/pizza/salad which can get really out of hand really fast. I realize this quickly as I piled on about five different toppings on my burger and essentially ended up with an incredibly gut-busting burger. Delicious, but wrong.
The space is beautifully decorated, I thought; very home-on-the-range with flair. Great for large groups and business lunches.
My friend picked me up from the Minneapolis airport at 9 something at night on a Friday, we wanted to eat dinner and catch up. Â He assures me not much is open this time of night for food. Â Sigh. Â One of the many reasons I'm happy I migrated west.
We head in, one group ahead of us but we got seated right away. Â They were busy, but it wasn't too loud to have a conversation.
They have Blue Moon, which is my favorite beer so I was happy. Â I wanted to try the build your own Bloody Mary but my friend doesn't drink and two Bloody's after being on the plane would have left me a little sloppy.
Since I grew up in Minnesota and now live in California, I eat Walleye everywhere I go there. Â So naturally I had the Walleye sandwich and fries. Â Loved it.
The decor and ambiance were great, the crowd mellow. Â A win. Â Had a lovely time with my friend.
Om nom nom. Been here a few times for work lunches and have never been disappointed. You can literally build your own pizza, bloody mary, salads, burgers, you name it! The selection of ingredients is great.
The price is pretty much what you would pay at a similar location. Love the patio seating here also.
If you're looking for a good happy hour, you can get it here with the food, but because Edina has a stick up its butt, no happy hour drink specials allowed. Boooo.
Lots of options on just about everything they do: pizza, burgers, and salad. Â Expected quality, style, price, and portion of bar, or in this case, tavern food for a family/bar restaurant in Edina. Â Wonderful happy hour food prices, but because it's Edina, there's no happy hour specials on drinks.
Space is big, so it's great for large gatherings. Â They do have an outdoor patio too, so that's nice. Â Service can be slow, but like most large bars, it depends on the actual server.
Not much differentiates Tavern on France from any of the other big bars in the area, food wise. Â I could go to Joe Sensor's, Poor Richards, or (to some extent) Cowboy Jacks for the same food. Â I think the only difference I noticed is that Tavern is probably the one with the most lighting/sunlight.
Build your own Pizza/Burger/Bloody Mary/Salad!
Need I say more? Â OK, I will.
Service here is always very friendly, there is a very nice patio and the bar and seating areas seem very spacious, so you never feel crowded even during peek hours.
I have been here several times and really like it, and will continue to have it be a regular spot on my rotation.
I love when my friends pick me up from the airport & take me to happy hour. Even on a Tuesday. I have the best friends ever.
Their choice this past week was Tavern on France.
I've been here once before with my parents. I'm still shocked that my parents go to happy hour.
The food specials are awesome. You can create your own pizza for $5. Its a big enough pizza to bring the leftovers home for another meal.
Pretty over prices for a "make your own burger" kind of place. Â Sure they are a little "classier" then the next burger place, but honestly, you're paying because it's in Edina. Â Other than that, I was never really impressed.
The food, ehh, it was alright, nothing to really write home about. Â I had a burger made to order so there really wasn't much to screw up there. Â On the other hand, this is a good place to go if you want to do something different.
Snuck out of the office on a beautiful Thursday afternoon for a quick lunch at Tavern on France. Â The service was prompt and the food came out LIGHTNING QUICK. Â Obviously a must for a workday lunch, and they nailed it. Â Tavern has a great outdoor seating area, complete with a small outdoor bar. Â We sat inside to escape the heat, and the ambiance inside is excellent, too - low lighting, spacious, comfortable booths, and life-sized framed old-school photographs. Â Very cool.
The food itself was impressive. Â My grilled chicken salad was massive - enough to fill even me up (remember, this is from the guy who ate two pounds of beef and two orders of fries to complete the Nookie Challenge). Â The dressing, a red pepper/roasted tomato delight, was fabulous - it's rare that I taste a dressing and say, "Wow, I've never experienced a taste like that." Â But this dressing was it.
My friend CK went for a bowl of Southwestern Chicken soup and LOVED it, to the point of considering ordering a second bowl. Â Friend #2, JD, also ordered a salad and was pleased with the result.
The only drawback for me is the price point - salads were all around $12. Â Sandwiches were around $9 or $10. Â With tax and tip, you're looking at $15 for a quick lunch. Â I always frame meals out in comparison to similar options - for me, $8 at Chipotle would be just as positive of an experience, and I could basically do that TWICE for the same amount of money. Â Or Jason's Deli in EP, where I could build my own endless salad (plus a small dessert bar) for about $10.
Tavern on France is a great restaurant overall. I'm always satisfied with my meal and service. The menu isn't overwhelming, but there seems to always be a few good choices for every mood.
My favorites here are the grilled chicken wrap, pasta and pizza. A chicken alfredo pizza can not do you wrong. If you're feeling crazy you can even choose crispy chicken, YUM!
The build your own options are actually a really nice difference between this place and others. I'm a picky eater, so I love getting to choose specifically what is on my food.
The best part about tavern is the tavern club. For beer lovers, you get $3.50 mugs all the time! You also get a discount on all food. I love a good loyalty program and this is a great example!
Food was average, prices were average to high. Happy hour is cheap. Worst service I've experienced in the Twin Cities.
We were told we would have a table in 20 min, took almost an hour. Watched 3 empty tables go uncleaned for at least 15 min. We ordered our food, waited for another 45min before waiter came back and told us we couldn't get our entrees because the kitchen closed! God damn idiot waited that long to tell us. Then he had the nerve to say we ordered too late, when it was HIS reponsibility to tell us this at the beginning (not to mention we waited forever for a table). This idiot didn't even know what IPA beer was, he called it EPA.
He's lucky Minnesota requires minimum wage laws and tavern required us to pay gratuity with our 6 person party.
We ate here on Easter with the family. Â It wasn't busy.
As a vegan, I usually do some research on a restaurant before I try it, but time didn't allow today, so I was pleasantly surprised to find the build-your-own salad menu. Â My salad creation turned out to be awesome and was big enough to take home half to eat for dinner later.
I met a friend here for Happy Hour and, while Edina doesn't allow drink specials for Happy Hour, the food was very good and they had a pretty good beer selection and the regular beer prices aren't bad. Â I'll definitely stop back and give them another shot and try some of the things they're famous for (build your own pizzas, burgers, and... something else that I can't remember).
BTW - The spicy sweet ranch sauce is worth a trip by itself.
Bad service. Very unprofessional staff. Food and presentation does not reflect the price at all. The waitress was very unprofessional, felt like I was in some cheesy smalltown sports bar without the sports TVs.
Food was less than par. Felt like something just thrown over the pan and served up, without any presentation and/or concern for how to food turned up.
If the kind and good citizens of Edina were given the chance to design their own Applebees, this is what it would look like. Â They get moderately-priced appetizers and wines, a Redstone-esque interior and customizable (but not remarkably so) Americana- food choices.
I came for happy hour - it is available in the whole restaurant and lasts until 6. Â The hostesses were friendly and our server was thorough and yet not pushy at all which was super-pleasant. Â
They don't have any drink specials, but they do have appetizer specials that are a steal. Â We had the chicken nachos which was for-sure a two-person project. Â It had that sort-of toxic waste nacho cheese that is totally delightful and the other accompaniments were also tasty. Â They also had reasonably-priced wines by the glass and a colorful list of cocktails which I would like to return to try.
