While the staff and the service was acceptable at best it was not exciting. The food is overpriced for the quality. The artichoke dip was runny and bland. The french onion soup had zero flavor. Both our steaks were undercooked and undered seasoned. The most horrific thing was when the table next to us found a bug in their drink. At that point we just wanted to get out. Paid our overpriced bill and left to never return. I strongly suggest you find another restaurant to spend your money at.
Review Source:This was our fourth visit to Theo's. Â My wife asked if she could substitute grilled vegetables for a potato and was told she could. Â Her entree arrived with vegetables on the plate and a large side dish of vegetables. Â I asked for bleu cheese on my salad. Â All was fine, excellent service, until the bill came. Â We were charged $2.50 for the grilled vegetables and .75 cents for the bleu cheese. Â Not the end of the world, but we felt we should have been told what would be extra. Our server said the computer won't accept the switch from potato to vegetable. Fine, but we should have been told.
Having said that, we will probably go back.
This is a very nice restaurant that does tend to cater to a senior crowd but that's ok. I had my son and daughter in laws baby shower in the private room. All food was great as was the service.
The staff do try to be a bit snobbish sometimes and although they offer various coupons, you can tell they don't like it when you use them.
My husband and I went to Theo's for valentines dinner and had an ok experience at best. We started with martini's that were fine, then we had our soup. The lemon rice was bland. I thought that this type of restaurant knew how to make these soups but I was way wrong. Salad dressings were good but my salad only had lettuce and carrot strips, I know it was about 8:45 but come on. My 6 year old niece could have made a better salad. After a while our steaks came (bone-in ribeye) and were not too bad, good size, one was a bit overcooked but the thicker one was pretty good. I had a large portion of my steak left and our server went to wrap it up. We paid our bill and left for home. When I got home I was going to have a quick bite of steak. I opened my to-go box and to my surprise, the server did not put my left over mushrooms or any of the juice from my plate. Oh the juice ,The magical juice that makes your steak juicy and delicious. I called at 5:30 today and spoke to a manager and explained about the to-go issue. This guy tells me they don't put the juice in because they don't want it to spill. Thats the best you could come up with, you would rather have dry meat than to have the juice spill. Either you are an incompetent foodie or just lying to get me off the phone. At least have the guts to tell me you don't care about your food. All I was trying to do was let you know about the to-go issue, I was ready to let the other stuff go, everyone has an off day. The reason I decided to write this is because the manager hung up on me and that was way to unprofessional.
Review Source:We went here for an early Valentines dinner. Â
The decor is a little old fashioned, (not old, everything looked new and well kept) but charming and very clean.
Service was great - very efficient and very friendly.
Soups were obviously homemade and great - the lemon rice soup was very good as was the ham and bean. Â Salads came next and were great - dressing, again homemade.
We had the baked goat cheese for an app - very good, and not too filling. Â
Husband had the surf and turf with a lobster tail and I had veal - both good, although mine could have used a little more seasoning (salt?) Â but that was easily solved.
We had the chocolate mousse cake for desert (shared - it was huge!). Â Meal nicely priced - with drinks (2 apiece) it was just a bit over $100 - not bad considering hubby had steak and lobster!
One downside -the bar is smoking - and right in the middle of the restaurant - no walls  I don't smoke, so maybe am a little more sensitive, but every once in a while the smell of cigarettes would waft over to where we were sitting and was a little off-putting.  And the bathrooms are right next to the bar - so you can't help to walk right into the smell. Â
It's not enough to stop us from returning (we definitely will!) but wish they could do something to fix that.
In 3 words? Snooty and Terrible.
We purchased a Groupon to Theo's which we thought would be a great excuse to try out somewhere new since we are frequent diners of the other restaurants owned by the family. First we were looked at like bums (my fiance and I) since we showed up in jeans and tshirts (your restaurant is next to another place that THROWS PEANUTS ON THE FLOOR in a strip of dive diners! Get over yourselves!)
We were shoved in a back corner and greeted by a server that seemed like she was annoyed that she wouldn't get tipped. (I ALWAYS tip! -even this chick even though I probably shouldn't have). We had a Groupon coupon for $20 - no restrictions. We weren't feeling particularly hungry, but our Groupon was due to expire at the end of the week so we thought we'd sample a little of the food and get a taste for next time. -I don't think there will be a next time now. Read on.
We had Stephanie, which really, you all should experience Stephanie. She's a regular ball of sunshine. Not really but I thought I should say one thing nice about her to boost her ego in case she cares enough to read this. She offered a wine list, but quickly took it away without us even looking at us and said "you don't need this huh?" (we're both pushing 30) We ordered a pop and an appetizer - to which Stephanie told us we weren't allowed to use our Groupon to do. (HUH?!) According to her we had to order to two complete dinners ($30 each) and then we could use it. I politely asked where it said that on the Groupon as I had just read it to make sure we were able to do just what I did. She told us she would check with her manager and find out if we were able to use it.
She returned to the table to tell us we could do it - THIS TIME- but if the owner was here there would be no way this would be acceptable. (I accept Groupons in my restaurant and trust me there are A LOT of people that do just what I did- then if they're happy order more). We told her that we were just trying out the food and deciding if this would become a regular place for us as the other restaurants the family owns are regular spots for us. She told us that the food at the other restaurants owned by her boss are "terrible". Â (Really?! We eat at those restaurants! And you NEVER dis a sister restaurant!)
Honestly, Theo's is probably the worst food we've had out of the family's restaurants. The shrimp in our meal tasted frozen. The chicken and the steak were both permeated with the flavor of the frozen shrimp. The steak was not medium rare - it was the better part of well done and chewy. The zucchini was only flavored with spices on the top piece leaving the others bland - and sadly was the best thing on the plate.
We were not asked if we wanted dessert (we ended up stopping for ice cream on the way home). The bill was dropped and she took off again. We saw the bus boy more than we saw our dear Stephanie and I thought about leaving the tip for him instead of her! They weren't even busy! A few tables in the entire restaurant and at least 3 servers on.
On the way out we both stopped in the restrooms. Paper strewn about all the stalls and what appeared to be bleach (?) stained on the floors (I hope it was bleach...) and the men's room was out of towels. When we tried to get someone's attention we were ignored. We ended up just walking out.
We won't be back.
The traditional bread basket with a hot slcied loaf with their orange spread is dynamite. Â They have delicious tender tilapia and other fish selections. Â The service is familiar since its just around the block from my parents house. Â
They have a very zesty lemon rice soup served hot and smooth in texture. Â Creamy and extra lemon juice squeezed fresh over there soup is easy to eat. Â The manager is usually observing everyone and the hostesses and bar tenders are angels who made sure we were seated conveniently and comfortably in this elegant palace of a place.
My family and i had been to Theo's a long time ago and enjoyed our experience, so we chose it as the location to have my birthday party.
Overall our experience was mixed. The meal began well with soups and salads. I get lemon rice almost every time its available and i chose it to begin my meal. It was one of the better lemon rice soups that i had in a long time. Other guests seemed to enjoy their salads as well.
The entrees were a bit of a mixed bag. I went with a Cuban sandwich which has always been a favorite of mine. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't good. The pork had some very large chunks of fat in it and the bread was heavily oiled. In addition, their barbecue sauce was heavily ketchup based and didn't taste like much else.
Others enjoyed their sandwiches and entrees except for my aunt. She had the chicken vesuvio. The dish looked very tasty, but she said it was so salty that she actually sent it back. That said, she is extremely fussy (aka a again in the butt) so i don't put a lot of stock in her review.
The waitstaff was prompt and courteous especially when dealing with my aunt which i appreciated.
All in all Theo's was ok, but i probably won't be rushing back.
Went for an early dinner, around 4:30. Â Took someone who means the world to me whom I'd like to get back in my life. Yesterday was her birthday which I forgot like I've done more often than not over the years. She understood. She actually laughed which is a good thing. Unfortunately I suggested this place. What a mistake.
Place was near empty. Seated promptly. Waitress was totally inept. Forgot my salad. Forgot her bearnaise. There appeared to be as much wait staff as diners yet she was MIA all the while we were there.
She order a filet, medium. Came out rare. Sent it back. Came back medium rare/ rare. She kept it as she was starving. She only ate about half of it. Her side of rice pilaf sat there while she waited for her steak to return. Stone cold now.
I order a shrimp cocktail. $10 bucks for 5 medium shrimp. Bland, runny sauce. Ketchup would have been better. I also ordered a double baked potato. I swear it was Or-Ida! Honestly. The sour cream came in a sealed little container like you'd get butter or syrup at McDonalds or BK. I ordered a bone-in ribeye medium rare. Much closer to rare. I ate half & brought the rest home to season & finish cooking. Â A lot of fat. I'll never go back. I would understand if the place was busy but this was ridiculous.
We are in the Hessville section of Hammond. Nothing nearby worth going to since Freddy's went to hell, so Theo's it was. She agreed because we couldn't come up with another place within 20 minutes for a steak. Neither of us have been there since it became Theo's. Without drinks it was $75! Way overpriced for the *hit service & food we got. Next time I'll take her to Gino's in Dyer or Taco Real. For $40 at Taco Real we would have had a feast. Never been disappointed there. God why didn't I think of them! I'm gonna be pissed for days!!!
My partner took me here for Valentine's Day this year. As the two star rating indicates Meh. I've definitely experienced better. I had the steak medium rare but it was over cooked. It's supposed to be a steak house and they can't cook a medium rare filet :( This is just another place that is recommended b/c it's a little higher priced than most places in the area. As you fellow Yelper's know price is NOT always an indication of a quality meal. In the end, neither the food nor the service at this place are worth the price. If you are trying to be a fine dining restaurant you must step up your game. Needless to say Valentine's day was our first and last visit.
Review Source:I would give this review 4*'s, but for one thing which I will explain later. Â Keep reading...
We went to Theo's on July 5th, my wife's birthday, and it was one of the few restaurants open! Â I'm not kiddin', I guess everyone wanted a three day weekend. Â +1 for being open...
Our appetizers came quickly they were delicious! Â We ordered the saganaki (Greek flaming cheese) and calamari. Â The calmari was cooked to perfection, and that can be hard to do if you've ever ordered calamari and had it not cooked so well. Â KEEP THAT IN MIND when you read further in the review...
The service was great! Â They were right on top of everything, and weren't pushy waiting for us to order. Â When we did order, the soup or salad came out timely and kept us occupied while we waited for our meals to be cooked. Â The busboy was on top of his game and knew exactly when to clean our plates or fill our water. Â +1
My mother-in-law had the lemon rice soup and she said, "This tastes funny... Â Maybe because you can taste the lemon!" Â I didn't have a chance to try it, but it had to have been freshly made. Â I did, however, have the French Onion soup and I made the same comment, probably because it was freshly made and tasted the way it should taste! Â +1
Now for the main course. Â My wife had the Porterhouse and it was cooked to perfection. Â She didn't add any sauce or anything to cover it up and loved every bite (that she could finish). Â My mother-in-law enjoyed her meal and everything was cooked correctly (I forget what she ordered). Â I had the lake perch (fried) and it was awesome! Â It wasn't heavy, the fish was flaky, and delicious! Â
And here's where they lose a star...
My father-in-law, not really a steak fan, ordered the Creole shrimp pasta something-or-other. Â It had saugsage (possibly andouille), and shrimp in it. Â I'm not kidding here... Â It was UNEDIBLE! Â At first I thought it was my father-in-law goofing around, but he wasn't. Â He tried to be polite. Â He didn't say anything. Â He ate what he could. Â Then he finally had me try a piece of shrimp (I LOVE SHRIMP!)... Â It was the most un-holy, undigestible, WTF-am-I-eating? UGH! Â I wanted to spit it out it tasted so bad! Â Did they forget to clean it? Â Was it the sauce? Â Seriously, I don't know how I swallowed it it was so bad!
My father-in-law was going to let it slide until they asked if he wanted it wrapped to take home. Â That's when he told them that it was the most disgusting thing he'd ever eaten. Â Sadly, I'd have to agree.
They didn't fuss about it. Â They immediately apologized and asked if he wanted something else to eat. Â They took his meal off the bill and apparently informed the owner, because he looked upset after this happened. Â +1
My wife wanted to try the carrot cake for dessert and it was definitely made for two people! Â 6 layers of deliciousness!!! Â We took that home and when we could finally find room to consume more food, we had dessert...
I have to believe that my father-in-law's meal was a fluke! Â Everything else was delicious and cooked to perfection! Â
The atmosphere was casual to business casual, and yes, it did appear to cater towards the blue-hairs, but that's okay. Â That's more my crowd anyway...
I will be back and I will give them another shot. Â Like I said, it had to be a fluke since everything else was right on!
Maybe it's just because they serve cheese spread with the bread, but I really like Theo's. Â
You can EASILY make two meals out of a Theo's dinner. Â One meal includes lots of bread and cheese spread, lemon rice soup, and salad with blue cheese dressing (extra charge, but they lay it on THICK and include crumbles). Â Your next meal, that you take home, will consist of whatever entree you chose. Â For me, it's the broccoli/shrimp/scallop fettucine alfredo (or whatever it's called). Â It's a tasty fat/carb bomb with big seafood. Â The prices are reasonable for the amount of food you receive. Â
The atmosphere is kind of old-person-y, yet sort of romantic. Â I've had one stellar waitress, and one annoying one who was old and didn't listen (couldn't hear?) and treated me like a child.
Nice place, clean on the inside with good food at good prices. Â Took people there for a celebration and everybody got something different (NY Strip, Chicken Picatta, FIsh, Filet Mignon) and really enjoyed it.
They service is fast and efficient, thought I wouldn't term it friendly, which might or might not bother you.
My Filet was cooked to perfection, which unfortunately is hard to find these days. Â Their lemon rice soup is really good as well, in that you can actually taste the lemon. Â I'll definitely be back.
My boyfriend and I went here recently for his birthday. Â The service was pretty good and my boyfriend enjoyed his food. Â It was very quiet on the Tuesday night we went and we got a booth in a private area which was nice and kind of romantic. Â I got fish and it was good, but it had more than 5 bones left in it, which bugged me. Â My salad also had a hair in it which grossed me out. Â I'd consider going back, but I would definitely not get the fish again.
Review Source:Went here in May to celebrate our 2nd anniversary and we had a great dinner . We had steak and some seafood appetizers and everything was really delicious. Each dinner includes a bunch of sides so you get your bang for your buck here. We both left with doggie bags. The prices are reasonable.
Review Source:With a lead from  frank over at ''TOP DOG GROOMING'' OVER ON 45 TH ST.
We had two choices  for the evening  thanks to frank whom i have never met  or have done business with . His  suggestion was  this is the place for a good high end meal . WE were very happy . I took the veal picatta . and the old lady ''birthday girl '' took the crab legs . to make a long story short . the service was great . the busboy knew when to pick up . the food was great about 14-16 crab legs full ,cleaned on the side all you had to do was pick out the meat . drawn butter . the meat was sweet and moist the butter was clear no BS . the veal was perfect white mushroom's cooked but firm not a bad thing to say about  Theo's . The price was just right for two people . I always get nervous when it sez market price .not here . a table next to us had the crab legs . then a couple asked .were the legs as good as they looked ? all four people said yes . that is why we came here .so If you have a few extra bucks to up grade skip red slobster and see Theo's  excuse me Iam in a food coma.
