Old School all the way! Â I stopped in here to wait for a friend who was flying into SFO (this is only about a mile away from the airport) and I was welcomed like I was a regular!
The bar has been here since the 40's and that is just part of it's charm. Â Leo, the bartender, was great! Â He took excellent care of me during my visit, telling me about the area I was in (South San Fran) and a little of the history of the place. Â And the people who shared the bar with me were funny and engaging!
Know before you go that it is CASH ONLY and that they close EARLY (10pm on the Friday night when I was here) Â But there are plenty of TV's to catch your favorite game on and their collection of alcohol is vast so they will be able to pour whatever you are drinking!
The drinks are cheap ($5 for a mixed drink) and during the lunch hours the owner springs for some free eats for the patrons (nothing fancy- think pizza). Â And parking is easy either on the street or there is a municipal pay lot right next door.
The next time you have time to kill waiting for a flight to come in at SFO- skip the cell phone lot. Â Topper is just as convenient and a heck of a lot more fun!
Mellow place to come to after dinner on a weekday. Cool bartender! I ordered a gin and tonic and he just came outta nowhere and started pouring me a bit more gin in my cup. Why thank you! Then he got me another drink on the house to end the night. And the SF Giants WIN!!!! Although they closed at 10 and cash only, it was enjoyable.
Review Source:This place is one of the funniest places I have ever been.
I learned how to play 3 different dice games from the regulars.
very mellow dive bar. one the funniest things was that the bartender was druck as hell. there was this little poodle running around(it was the guy that lived upstairs)
It's like someone forced a drag queen into a 49'ers Jersey, thrust a full bowl of Nachos into their hands, and, at gunpoint, drove them to the stadium, planted them near the 50 yard line with a giant foam finger hot glued to their hand, and demanded: "Cheer good, Blu Rae, cheer real good."
The bar itself, is beautiful. Old school, red velvet walls, black leather, great exterior, period details. But someone has turned it into a sports bar, on top of those original details. In case my analogy earlier fell flat.
The bartender was very nice. Makes a wicked Martini. Was glad to not get beat up for drinking a martini. The patrons were sad, but not the funny kind of sad, the drinks are insanely cheap, and it closes at 10.
Topper is cool because its local, clean, and I really like all the Niner memorabilia. Too bad it was 6pm on a Sunday, the Giants game had just begun and the bartender announces "last call". Â No beer on tap, no juke box, and they close wayyy too early..no fun. But cheap mixed drinks and 4 tv's to watch sports ... can make for a good time while it lasts.
Review Source:What surprised me the most was that they close at 10, though I see they are open before 8 in the morning when I pass there on the way to work. WTF?!? Anyway...
Bartender is extremely friendly and the beers are inexpensive, though bottles only. From what I recall, as I sat there all anti-social listening to Motorhead in my iPod, the place was really clean. I just sat there and had a few Anchor Steams (or seven) before heading out. I'll be back.
Oh yeah. The bartender was telling me about how they have free BBQ during 49'er games.
I'm a Browns fan. But if there's free BBQ, I'll be a 49'er fan any day.
after a very quick tux fitting, we went to toppers to meet up with some folks.  the bar was not at all  fancy but it had a homey feel and the bartender was very pleasant.  no beers on tap and i didn't try any mixed drinks because i was told it was bad etiquette to drink hard liquor before 6pm. Â
i learned a lot about cute guns, elopements, a korean guy who has never been in a fight, whirlwind romances, boobs, kimchee burgers and someone who hates pickles. Â i still can't believe it about the pickles.
