Torches has a nice Sunday brunch with omelette service. The location on the Hudson River is great. I enjoy the outdoor seating in the summer, but this restaurant is nice all year long.

Went there with a family party of 7 on Saturday 11/3/12. The service was horrendous and the food quality was worse. The place has had crappy food since it opened. Nothing has changed and do not bother. There are so many better restaurants on the river. Waste of time and money. GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!

The two stars are only for the view.

I would only recommend this place for a drink at the bar.

The food is consistently sub-par accompanied by mediocre service.

Went for Sunday brunch today.  Chaffing dish food was dry, sometimes cold and poorly presented.  They ran out of some of the dishes and meat carver was some high school kid who had no business handling a carving knife.  Wait staff rough around the edges.  Breakfast buffet at Hampton Inn is better than this.

Mediocre food and beer list.  Service was friendly.  Price point is average.  The views are spectacular of the Hudson River.  I recommend to go for a drink and something light and venture elsewhere for a more meaningful meal.

We went there on Sunday evening, 8/12/12, and we had a nice table on the river.  We ordered buffalo calamari which was the only saving grace altho a little heavy on the sauce but tasty.

Entrees were less than par.  My mom ordered the cordon bleu and it was very dry and was supposed to be a signature dish!  my stepdad and I ordered the stuffed founder and it was overcooked as well, the veggies on the side were something out of a frozen bag, not fresh and seasonal.

The prices are outrageous for the quality of food but I guess bc of the location, they can do that. Flounder were $22 each and chicken was close to $18

I would go to the River Grill next door...but I havent tried the others yet.

This place was is a dump! We were sitting outside but a storm came in so they moved us inside.  Well, the place had an oder that was disgusting & the rug was filthy!  The ac must of been broken as well b/c it was crazy hot.  Our food was OK, nothing great esp for the price the menu was boring too, but I know people go bc this place is on the water.
2 of us ordered mimosa's & it was in a tiny glass & tasted like all juice! It was ridiculous. O and the coffee was OLD everyone had to ask for a new cup b/c it was so gross.
I'd never go back to eat there just for drinks & app's.

Oh my god. I went here for my birthday dinner at the recommendation of my parents, and the sheer awfulness of the service nearly ruined the meal for us.

We got there at the time of our reservation and were seated outside promptly. I have to say, the view is beautiful. Sitting on the patio was a great choice. We had menus, but it took a while for our waiter to get over to us and get our drink orders. No biggie at this point, though we were already ready to order our appetizers.

My mom and I order their house margaritas, and we order buffalo wings and regular fried calamari. Our margaritas come and they are, well, not margaritas. It tasted like something I would have made at a high school house party and cost a lot of money. It tasted like there was a lot of booze in there, at least.

Then, a food runner (I assume, since our waiter has been MIA since dropping off some bread) drops off our apps, except it's not at all what we ordered: one regular plate of fried calamari, and one plate of buffalo calamari. WHY WOULD WE ORDER TWO PLATES OF CALAMARI. To their credit, they took it off our table right away and replaced it with buffalo wings, which they comped. We were beginning to realize that this restaurant has a serious communication problem.

Our totally dull waiter finally returns, and takes our order for entrees. Doesn't ask if my mom and I would like another drink. Hmmph, ok. We do ask for more bread, though, which comes at once. Except, well, it was raw and doughy in the middle.

I got the NY strip steak and, while the steak itself and the sides were good, did not come how I ordered it. I clearly said MEDIUM RARE and it came out well done. This is one of my pet peeves. Oh, well.

My girlfriend got the baked mac and cheese, which was good, but really how can you mess that up? My parents both enjoyed their stuffed flounder. I REALLY would have liked a glass of wine with my steak but, again, was never asked if I wanted another drink when our waiter did care to show up at our table.

We eat our entrees, and don't even notice the time flying since we are having a good time, but it took someone a good fifteen minutes to notice that we were done with our meals. Notice I say someone and not our waiter; we had to ask another employee to take away our plates and if we could please see a dessert menu.

We get our dessert menu, and our dim server finally shows up again to take our order. Our order was not complicated: a slice of cheesecake, two regular cappuccinos, one decaf cappuccino. Our server comes out and, lo and behold, he hands us two decaf cappuccinos and one regular. We explained that he had made a mistake. His response? "Oh, sorry." and walks away. No offer to comp it, no offer to replace it.

Well, at least the cheesecake was good. For the money we paid to go here, it was so not worth it. They need to train their waitstaff better and learn to communicate effectively before they can be anything other than frustrating.

I was thoroughly unimpressed when a friend took me here while i was visiting her.  There was NO climate control in the restaurant and we were all sweating.  We asked repeatedly for more AC but they did nothing.  The wait service was terrible and our waiter took forever to bring more drink orders and also messed up our orders.  I asked for my seafood to be cooked with very little to know butter and it came out swimming in butter.  The veggies were cold and tasted like they were previously frozen and the seafood was just OK.  For the price it was not worth it at all.   The only redeeming thing about the restaurant was the Calamari.  I actually thought it was very good and really enjoyed the seasoning on it.  It's about the only thing I would go back for.

early 4/2012 - the host, Damien, gets 5 stars for his over-the-top efforts on seating us & helping us

mid 4/2012 Sat & waited 15 mins for our drinks- ended up getting our own because they sat 6 consecutive tables to our server, who was pretty new.  That's just bad management.  The food was 3 stars.

5/11/12 tried AGAIN - went here for wings. What a nasty presentation. They lay the wings on a bed coleslaw, throw a mess of scallions on top of the wings. It was just all over bad.

I've been here multiple times. My dinner here last week was the best experience here. I met a friend for dinner, we had excellent service. The food was prompt, including the appetizer.
We had the coconut shrimp app.  Very tasty
We both had steak for dinner.  My filet was above average, not a scrap went to waste. My favorite thing were the house made special of the week, sweet potato fries.  I know what you are thinking, big deal another sweet potato fry, but let me tell you as a lover of sweet potato fries, these were the spud decadence.
They should be a menu item.

Great food. The filet mignon quesadillas are awesome and so is the calamari. Gorgeous views of the hudson.  They just added some new items to their food and drink menu that are delicious. Miso glazed salmon is a must try!

We had a rehearsal dinner here tonight for about 25 and were seated in a center, semi-private room with glass walls.  The ambiance was fun, relaxed, and beautiful but service was very slow and I was kinda surprised that there was only 1 server for the entire party.  It seemed like aeons before we got our apps and drinks, and it was well over an hour before we even got to order our entrees.  The tortilla chips with the spinach artichoke dip were very good: nice and crispy and complemented well by the creamy dip.  The crab cake app (yes, 1 crab cake) was tiny and severely overpriced at $11.95, and contained more breading than actual crab; it was also kinda bland, which was poorly covered up by an overload of thousand island dressing.  Not a fan.  The fried calamari was decent but slightly tough, and the coconut shrimp was a bit bland.  Overall, the apps weren't that great, and decent, at best.  I had the spice rubbed half chicken which was very flavorful and tender, with a deliciously crispy skin.  The accompanying seasoned green beans were flavorful (garlicky) without being overly greasy.  I substituted the black beans and rice for the potatoes, and really liked that dish; the rice was flavorful, buttery, and tender.  I only wished that there had been more black beans.  I also tried the crabmeat stuffed flounder but was kinda disappointed by the breading-heavy stuffing and rather bland and dry flounder.  I felt that it was more breading than actual crabmeat.  Overall, entrees are just okay but the prices are steep ($20 and up) and portions small.  The cheesecake dessert was good but not as creamy as the Cheesecake Factory's and pricey at $6.95 for a small sliver.  Our waitress was nice enough but not very helpful or even that friendly; she rolled her eyes several times when we asked for tea/water/soda/drinks refills.  At least our bread baskets were kept filled, probably because we waited well over an hour to get our actual food.  To be honest, it wasn't that busy in the dining area and we were just kept waiting for an almost unreasonable amount of time.  However, despite the downfalls, this is one of the very few nice, sit-down restaurants near West Point so I will give them 3 stars.  The grey goose pear martini was great but drinks here are expensive ($9-11 for a martini, $9 for wine) and tiny.  Good for a special occasion near West Point but better value, food, and drinks can definitely be found.

    ** Torches Sunday Brunch **

I just wanted to send an update regarding the Torches Sunday Brunch.  Got about 20 friends together for my friends 25th Birthday.  We figured a Sunday brunch was a cute and different idea, and it was great!  All you can drink mimosas, and plenty of food!  Love it!

Pretty big room with great views from the bar, including the patrons.

Food was not memorable, but the experience was enjoyable.  Great bar, elegant crowd.  Great for a drink and food at the bar.

Wasn't intimate enough or good enough to cause me to return.

Lovely inside and out, my preference for outside dining by the water usually wins.  Food is okay, tasty but not great.  Service has always been good and everything reasonably tidy and clean.  Hard to beat when there is nothing else to do for a summer evening.

On one hand the cocktails are very good.  Wine and dine by the water, no brainer.

The food is good, but not worth the high prices. They should also add more of a variety to the menu. The atmosphere however is great & high class. The have a HUGE beautiful fish tank built into the wall behind the bar/along a dining area.  Big place w/ lots of room.  Can eat outside & see great views of the Hudson.  Cool place, but would like it better if they made the food worth the money.

I've been there for the nightlife, but it wasn't worth it.  It's too cramped in the area they allot for the dancing & the DJ that night wasn't great.

I enjoyed my dinner here. We had a nice view of the river and the food was decent. Only problem I had was our waitress wasn't very aware of us. We had to ask multiple times for the same thing, and she brought us the wrong beverages. She was very pleasant though.

Came here for dinner relatively early on a Saturday night.  I didn't have my hopes set too high because of the low rating but I realized after reading most of the low reviews that they were based on the "nightlife" scene here.  I wasn't disappointed.
The service and food were good--not great, but not bad at all.  Our waitress was attentive and checked on us as often as she could considering the large number of people she was taking care of.  Honestly, the best thing I consumed here were the cocktails so I would definitely come for the drinks and sit in the bar with the awesome enormous fish tank in the foreground.  The river view was also really nice, makes me want to come back in the summer time.  The spinach dip appetizer was really yummy, and the seafood chowder was filling and tasty but needed more salt and pepper.  The mixed seafood grill was good, but later in the evening my stomach hurt a little from the grease.  I'm sure the average person wouldn't have that reaction, but I rarely eat grease and oil.  We finished the evening with a huge slice of carrot cake that was actually outstanding.

Very nice restaurant. Decent food, beautiful view, horrible service. I've been for drinks, lunch, and dinner. Each time we've been treated with a sense of us being lucky to be there. Service is worse at the bar. Waited 15mins while the bartender & staff made smoothies for themselves. Staff looked our way but didn't even acknowledge us until they finished making their smoothies and discussed how good they were. This is sad since this is one the the nicest places along the river. My wife has had similar experiences when taking clients there for drinks or meals. After 5 or 6 visits with similar experiences we stopped going.

I used to spend a lot of time there in the summer and I love the outside views and the indoor fish tank is spectacular.  For the most part, the staff was always friendly and we got to know a lot of the bouncers there who were very helpful as well.  Yes, late at night it turns into a "club", but it's still a great place to get together with friends.  It was my favorite "meeting" place with many of my friends!

I really want to give this place one star bc i hated it so much. but it was better than that.

service was the worst. the guy wouldnt take app order before dinner order for a group. service sucked after that anyway but the guy was a little annoying dweeb.

place turns into an upstate ny version of the jersey shore apparently at night and watching that occur while i was eating was the best part of my night because it was HILARIOUS. it was more like the circus with all the clowns that were there. there were about 60 bouncers there shuffling out dinner guests and of course i get something spilled on me. go out to change. and have to get ID'd on teh way back in and get bitched at for wearing sweatpants. DUDE I JUST GOT SPILLED ON. looked like a washed up backyard wrestler from one of the local trailer parks

the food was ok. i mean it. it was ok. i ate it. ceasar salad was submerged in cheese and dressing which i usually love, but the cheese was crappy and the dressing wasnt much better. grilled wings were good.

i forgot what i got for dinner actually at this point because i started writing this at the table. looking back now it definitely deserves one star bc i cant even remember what i had for dinner which pretty much explains the experience.

one star for great location and edible food. unless you live up there and its all you've got, just hit up mcdonalds and get back to civilization asap.

Beautiful place, great food, wine and bar selection is top notch (well priced). Been her 3 times, once for anniversary, once with friends, and another time just for dinner with the wife. Each time, i walked away feeling well fed. The atmosphere in here is awesome, waiters are excellent.  Ambiance inside is very nice. I was told they have the largest fish tank in the hudson valley area.  Food is great here, nice mixed ranges.  You ca go from burgers to salmon.

I will always recommend this place..

Torches is middle of the road. I went the first time for my Bachelorette Party and I'd say the drinking atmosphere was good. My girls gave the bartender a $25 tip as kind of a "take care of us" deal but she did not want to help us what so ever...that was a let down. We were only there a little while as the drinks were really expensive and the crowd was too fancy for our feelings that night so we went next door to the Blue Martini.

I went back again with my family a few months later when my mother in law was in town. My parents had been there for dinner and they thought it would be a nice place to go. We sat outside by the water until a HUGE storm rolled in (why they sat us outside in the first place is beyond me when there were threats of a storm). We were brought the wrong food (someone else's but we ate it anyway) and JUST as our meals were delivered the skies opened up and we had to move inside. They put us in the bar area in the corner - meh. I had a cobb-like asian salad (less than stellar)...my husband and father both had a meal that they weren't crazy about. My mother in law had shrimp and scallops that she really enjoyed and I forget what my Mom had. We weren't overly impressed. After dinner we sat at the outside bar for another drink and it started to POUR! This was the best part of the evening.

I see that a lot of the reviews are here are complaints because they went in later at night. I've never been there when there has been a bouncer or a cover. I usually go at around 6:30 on weeknights for dinner. We've never had a problem with the hostess or our waitresses.

I usually have a glass of wine and have never received a dirty glass or bad drink. Usually my bf and I split the house salad which is definitely large enough to share as an app and then I have the crab cake BLT. They have AWESOME fries and the crab cake is the best I've had outside of Baltimore/DC, including all the different crab cakes I've tried in NYC. It's giant and comes with an awesome chipotle mayo. I always take home leftovers. I haven't tried dessert because there are so many fries, and like I said, they are AWESOME.

On top of all that, you get a great view of the Hudson and they have lots of outside seating. It's a little pricey but I chalk it up to the view. This is our regular spot for a nice dinner near home.

I attempted to go to Torches a few weeks ago with a group of about 14 friends.  As soon as we walked up to the door the bouncer gruffly told us to back up behind the ropes that were two feet behind us.  Where do they think this is?  I'm not a child and I will not be treated like one.  In case the bouncer didn't get the memo: It's Newburgh not Chelsea, get over yourself.  We spent our money down the street at the Blue Martini and had a great night.

Stopped by for a quick dinner during the week.  Had the swordfish special served with jasmine rice and baby bok choy.  Was definitely worth it, the prices are just right and the atmosphere is beautiful.  The only downside to my night was the beer glass, when i looked closely at the glass, there was a residue which upon touch i found to be sticky.  I obviously asked for a new beer which was perfect, a nice glass of Chimay Red.  All in all, if you can forget the glass issue, the restaurant was very nice and the food was very good.  I would go there again, very family friendly and very well priced.

Torches On the Hudson was once a fine dinning establishment and had a professional staff.  Last year I took my mother there for mothers day along with my wife and father.  We had a reservation for this special day only to be seated right next to the stage.  I was thrown by the seating assignment at first but made the best of it only to have the day turn dismal when the singer began singing and we had to yell to each other in order to have a conversation.  We all ordered our drinks which came promptly and where just OK.  My wife and I had the seafood tower which was comprised of Oysters, Clams, Lobster and shrimp.  The lobster was overcooked as where the shrimp and the oyster's and clams appeared as if they where shucked in the morning and left sitting on ice to shrivel like a prune.  My mother and father said that they where not pleased with their meals either as they where salty and dry.  The presentation on the meals served that day was poor and lacked any passion or thought.

Went in to this restaurant (or is it really just a nightclub masquerading as a food service establishment?) It was 8:00 pm on a weeknight. There was exactly three other people in the entire establishment. One loudmouth screaming into his phone at the bar and a table of two. It was a beautiful summer night so we asked if we could sit on the outside patio. Blunt no was the answer. We waited to be greeted by the bartender for ten minutes while she gossiped with the other workers. How hard is it to greet new customers when you have none?

And the giant fish tank that everyone mentions in their reviews? It was FILTHY and disgusting.

Come to think of it, the food was disgusting too.

Do yourself a favor, avoid this place like the plague.

This place is located right near the Hudson river, and is a pretty big place. They have a restaurant(which i haven't been to) a bar/club environment on the outside.
I have been here a couple of times for some reason,i don't really feel great about this place at all times.I am always accompanied with the best people but i would hang out here for an hour and would always run away to Blue Martini.
guess their huge fish tanks and not so great  DJ is a turn off.Well, but it's a good place if you had a couple of drinks and you might feel you are in an aquarium and probably get amused(Guess people who drink would like the place better) :)
I would like to get back to check out the restaurant and hope the other half of it is better .

Yes, the place is huge. yes it has a big fish tank in it. yes it's on the river. but it's in the middle of a crappy area and your paying total loot for food that is just not great. bear in mind i was a one and doner here, but underwhelmed is a word that comes to mind.  piermont/nyack are much better bets if you want to get ripped off for eating/drinking on the hudson! and your not in the middle of an industrial park (or whatever it is). trust me, thats where i drove from to get to this place.

The four stars are mostly for the ambiance of this place.  It's almost out of place on the Newburgh Water front.  The restaurant is massive.  A beautiful fish tank separates a rather large bar area from the dining area.  The food is good but nothing that is going to knock your socks off.  They had a decent draught beer selection, some U.S. micro's that you typically don't see in the Hudson Valley (Magic Hat #9, LongTrail Hefeweizen etc.)  My parents enjoyed their meals and they can sometimes be hard to please;-)  Mom had the pulled BBQ sandwhich, Pops had Fiery Shrimp Linguine as did my DW.  I myself had the Crab Cake Sandwhich.

This place would be decent on a nice summer night where you could sit out on the patio and enjoy the views of the Hudson.  Parking was a bitch around 8pm on a Friday night and at the risk of sounding like an old fart, this place really turns into more of a College kid bar scene after 9pm on the weekend.  So if scantily clad college chicks are your thing then you might enjoy this place later in the evening:-)

My husband and I went to Torches for valentine, we made reservations two weeks in advanced.  First out table was for a party of four so me and hubby had plenty of space, it overlooked the Hudson River, very romantic!!! The service was OK, it took them some time to finally come to our table.  To start I had the New England Clam Chowder which it was really good, one of the best I ever had. My husband had fish with crab meat stuffing, he said it was really, really good. I had the Steak which I requested to be well done no red. Well, guess what? I had to send it back because it was bleeding and when I got it back still it wasn't' t well done.  I also had the best Raspberry margarita with mint leaves in it ever, it was so good i had a least three (definitely a must have next time I go back!). Torches is better during the summer when you  can seat outside and enjoy the ambiance. overall it was a very nice and romantic dinner.

I'm not a big fan of Torches at all. It's just not a great restaurant at all. Both times that I've been the food has been lousy and the service sub par. Basically to me, it's a very nice looking, well located applebees.

I don't want to rag on it too badly because I can understand why people would like it. I just prefer a good meal and good service. The fancy building does nothing for me. The view can be had from any other restaurant on the Waterfront.

Torches is the "flagship" restaurant on the Newburgh Waterfront.  It looks nice from the outside, and is very trendy inside.  All in all, I like the food there, having gone several times.  I'd go back, but it is not my favorite on the Waterfront (Big Easy Bistro, usually) or in town (Raccoon Saloon).

When you walk in, the first thing you will notice is the large (giant!) fish tank separates the bar area from the dining area.  It is beautiful, and kids will enjoy watching the fish - some adults will, too.

Groups can do well here, as they have large round tables and booth seating, too.  There are some outdoor tables which are great in the spring and summer, though it can get chilly sometimes, and if it is too hot out, the air conditioned dining room is preferable.  Reservations are recommended on weekends.

The menu is a mix of continental dishes and some seafood, too.
The portions are generous and all the meals I have eaten there are good.  Plenty of wine, beer, and mixed drinks are available.

The bar area is crowded before dinner, and later on, it becomes packed.  Bands sometimes play out there.

The staff is very good - black is the required color for all of them, and they seem to be quite choosy in their female waitresses.  Most of them are stunningly attractive, which is not a bad thing.

Downsides - I find the crowd at the bar a little on the young side, and occasionally obnoxious.  I recommend eating there, and getting out early for drinks elsewhere.

    Enjoy the restaurant.
