Like most other reviewers I really like this restaurant! Â The sushi has never been anything other than fresh and delicious and the owners know who we are when we come in and warmly greet us each time. Â It's such a friendly and welcoming place! Â The only drawback is that we like this place so much that we keep returning here and haven't tried more of the local flavors. Â I unhesitatingly recommend Umano Sushi to anyone that wants good sushi, good service, a good atmosphere and all that at a very reasonable price.
Review Source:This Japanese restaurant has quickly become one of my favorites in the area. I don't remember how we found it exactly, but it was a great discovery. I think that we chose it originally because whatever review we read said that the chairs were especially comfortable. This turned out to be true, for the record.
I've only been here two or three times, but after the first time I went the owner remembered myself and my friends. Recognition is always a great way to get on my good side, but the fact that the food here is great didn't hurt, either. I usually get one form of sushi roll or another and haven't been disappointed. The Umami roll is great, and I LOVE the Spicy Girl roll. I've tried a ton of their appetizers and have loved them all, too. The chicken gyoza is delicious and the tempura doesn't skimp on the veggies. Also - FRIED ICE CREAM! One of the few places that I've found that does this dish right. It only comes in vanilla though, which kind of sucks. If they added green tea fried ice cream to the menu, I might just edit this to give it five stars. They do have green tea mochi, though.
Umami is kind of small, but it's never very crowded so I wouldn't say that getting a table would ever be a problem. The prices are reasonable, certainly not any more expensive than at similar places in the neighborhood. The staff is very attentive and accommodating, and as I said, the chairs are REALLY comfy. The rest of the atmosphere is nice, too - a little dark, a little trendy, and the tables aren't too crowded considering that the restaurant is on the narrow side. There's a big circular booth in the corner that I love sitting at because it allows me a view of the entire place so that I can spy on people's orders and get food envy. And trust me, you will too - the presentation of each meal isn't lacking, either. It's probably contributing to how I keep going back (and will continue to) again and again.
Went by myself on Thursday night (night the Yankees were swept by the tigers) and was the ONLY person in the place! A few people wandered in a bit later. I sat at the sushi bar and had excellent service, although I questioned my judgement in having sushi in a place with no other customers. I had an interesting roll with tempura eggplant on the bottom and a pile of salmon paste, covered in sauce. I do not enjoy mushy salmon. I like my salmon to resemble fish 'meat' in some manner instead of semi-solid. I did really enjoy my Kani salad though which had a smattering of tempura flakes on top and a nice spicy sauce. Â I would give this place a second chance as it seems very clean and the fish appears fresh.
Review Source:My wife and I had dinner here tonight as a couple. Â The kids were out and we decided on sushi. Â We sat at the sushi bar and I told the sushi chef to "feed me". Â I don't think he was accustomed to receiving this request, but he DELIVERED! Â We started with a citrus salmon sushi plate, followed by an avocado bowl stuffed with crayfish. Â The salmon was light and refreshing with a thin slice of jalapeno, which added a spicy zing to the sweet orange sauce. Â The avocado/crayfish salad sat on a cream and soy sauce bedding - another unique and interesting appetizer. Â
The main course was a huge sashimi and sushi platter that was enough for a party of six. Â The fish was very fresh and expertly served and included a roll of unknown origin - crispy outside with a traditional center. Â The service was exceptional and after dinner I suggested that they create a tasting menu that included small plates rather than the overly large sashimi and sushi platter and they completely understood and agreed.
I would high recommend Umami Sushi for any lover of fresh sushi as well as traditional Japanese cuisine - my wife's teriyaki steak (filet mignon) was cooked perfectly and the meat was moist, properly flavored and cooked medium (pink).
The prices are fair and as I said, the service was tremendous.
4.5 stars.
The staff are beyond friendly especially the owners. I have been here at least 5 times and plan on increasing that number. The owners seem to know everyone that walks into their restaurant and makes an effort to start a conversation with you, which I love.
I always order their chirashi which is always fresh. My boyfriend likes to order their special rolls that never fall short. Their presentation is wonderful as well. It's not over the top but you can tell that they put care into their food. Their sushi lunch specials are a great deal. My mother tends to order the sashimi lunch and it comes with many pieces including soup/salad for only $13.
This is my new go to sushi place. Highly Recommend.
This place has amazing sushi, the quality and selection are both great. The staff shows you a great amount of hospitality and are highly trained within Japenese cuisine. I have been here about 5 times now and will be returning.
And for the other comments about cleaning supplies, I have not had this problem when I have gone, and from what I have experienced (5 times) they were extremely clean.
Oh and they offer hibachi as well that is really good. (It is not cooked in front of you though, so you know.)
I don't know how anyone could say something bad about this place. First of all, it's reasonably priced. 2 dollars for miss soup? Â I think yes! Â
The place is very trendy, and my boyfriend and I comment on the really cool lighting every time we go to Umami. Unless you're going on a Friday night when you're likely to run into Ardsley preteens, the ambiance is generally very relaxing.
Best of all, the food is always good. My boyfriend, who loves food more than most, compares the sushi quality to Haiku's. However, Umami offers some of the best hibachi chicken I ever had, so I'd rather come here than anywhere else. Also, you can't beat how well you're treated here. The owner always greets you with a smile and a hello, and she tries to remember your names each time you come in. She's great, and we feel good about spending our money here.
I'd go back again, of course, just as we have for the past six months.
Bleck, this may have been my worst dining experience, ever. Â The restaurant smells like cleaning supplies with no hint of any food being cooked or served. We sat at the bar and the sushi chef swept and mopped the floor and then served us our sushi without washing his hands..we had to kindly ask him to do so, but he chose to put gloves on instead (ironic for a sushi chef to do sine they normally use their bare hands). Â The staff was incredibly intrusive during our meal by telling us what to order because it was "popular,' and how we liked everything (literally, they asked about every.single.thing.) And when we asked to order toro and uni, they said they were all out because it was so busy (there was one other table of people there), I assume they do not order GOOD fish. Â All of their fish was perfectly shaped (i.e. packaged, not fresh cut) and pretty much everything came with "spicy sauce" to cover the blandness. Â My girlfriend ordered agadashi tofu that she had to dip in the sauce, my miso soup, AND soy sauce to give it any flavor at all. Â We then went home and had stomach aches...........
Overall, I am extremely disappointed that Sushi Man has left and this place was unfortunate enough to be opened. It is doubtful that it will last long if it continues to stay like this and I am grateful for that!
