First off, we (my friend Delia and I) went there and it kinda looks like a hole in the wall kind of place. DO NOT let that fool you, there is greatness inside! We walked in and were told to seat ourselves. The place is kinda small with only about 6-8 tables in it and you can see directly into the kitchen (which I LOVE). Each table has soy sauce and Bragg's liquid amino's on it and from that point on I knew I was in heaven!
The menu itself is huge, and here's the thing, it is ALL vegan, every single dish is vegan. So there is no asking to take this out or what's in this. (Well, I still have to ask, because of the celiacs and all.) They have lunch/dinner specials that include salad and spring rolls, and they have gluten-free specials!  Also, you get complimentary miso soup when you sit down, how cool is that? So we got our miso soup first, and it was good and since it's still winter in Chicago, this was very much appreciated! We also got tofu satay as a starter. The tofu satay is very much like chicken satay, or unchicken satay which they also have, but the tofu satay is GF (not sure about the peanut sauce though). This was absolutely amazing, the coconut curry it was dipped in was fantastic and the peanut sauce was to die for! My friend didn't finish all of it and put it to the side to put on her main course it was so good! For our main dishes, I ordered the spicy noodles dinner special with extra broccoli and my friend ordered basil fried rice.  First off, the spring rolls (not GF, I cheated, oh well), were fantastic, they were crispy and crunchy and filled with deliciousness, the dipping sauce they came with was good as well. So those were definitely a hit. The salad that came with mine had, honestly, THE BEST, vegan salad dressing I have ever had in my life. I do not know what's in it, nor do I care. I want a whole bottle (or two) of it to put in my fridge. Maybe I will ask them to do that when I go there next, there's an idea... Either way amazing.
So then I start eating my main dish, and you know that point when the food is so good you stop talking?  That's where I was, actually that's where everyone was. There were 3 other tables there aside from us and once people were eating, there was very little talking going on. Now, I don't know about you, but when people are so busy eating that they aren't talking, that means the food has to be down right fantastic, and it was. My food was even hot (temperature wise), and that did not stop me from continuously trying to shovel more of it in my mouth. The spicy noodles (aka drunken noodles), were spicy but not too spicy, had a great vegetable, noodle, to sauce ratio and blew my mind. My friend's basil fried rice was the same, now, the brown rice is really vibrant, so don't let that freak you out, it tastes really good. Also, I don't think they have white rice in the place, so yay! White rice isn't healthy anyway.
So food wise, I love this place. I'm pretty sure it has become my new favorite, and that place was held by The Chicago Diner before, but since The Chicago Diner's GF menu is kinda lackluster (I try so hard to like it, but their GF menu is like 3 items, and once you have had all 3, you get extremely bored). Also, the location is easy to get to, and though seating is limited, it wasn't a problem when we were there. It has street parking, so it was easy to find parking. The waitstaff was so nice, kept up with water refills, answered questions, really helpful, and it isn't expensive, it's actually very reasonable for the amount of food you get and the quality of the ingredients. So, I suggest you try it. Also this is one of the only places I have seen that has like 5 different choices of mock meats, they have soy chicken, soy pepper steak, seitan, tofu, soy fish, soy shrimp, it kinda blew my mind even though I'm pretty sure everything but the tofu has wheat in it. I'm not sure on that though and will definitely have to ask next time I go there, because let's face it, with food that good, there is no way I'm not going back there!

Really enjoyed this a lot. I am not vegetarian, & tend to steer clear of soy meats. But this was all delicious, including the soy chicken pad Thai! My 6 & 8 year olds loved it too, which says a lot.

Checked out this place thanks to all the Yelp reviews. I brought my lovely GF here for Valentine's Day since she's now an aspiring "vegan". I guess due to all the reviews I kind of  had a different picture in mind to this restaurant. It's nothing fancy, and the place was tiny.  Our server seemed really shy. ( she's probably new).Either way, I'm glad I called in advance to reserve a table, because there was a  line of people waiting to be seated. We stared with a veggie tempura and Mi-so soup. I had the Pad Thai with Soy Chicken. It was SO delicious. My other half had the Orange chicken. For it being a meat substitution , the soy chicken was really good. They even gave us a complementary bowl of Edamame's.. That was pretty nice of them. I definitely plan to go again when I'm back in the neighborhood.

I have mixed feelings about this place. I like that it's really small and quite cozy, but the staff seemed miserable, and they were listening to 103.5 FM which totally didn't fit the bill and was super obnoxious. It seemed to take them a little longer than it should have to prepare our food, considering we were literally the only people in the restaurant at the time, but hey, maybe they had GrubHub orders to do or something, so that doesn't really affect my rating of them. Everything is vegan (obviously), which is absolutely grand (obviously). And oh my goodness, you cannot come here and not get their grilled veggie dumplings as an appetizer! The spring rolls are also delicious. We ordered chow mein, which I haven't had since before I went vegan, and it did not disappoint! However, their pepper steak wrap totally did. Honestly, it was the most blah vegan dish I've ever paid for. It was like 90% romaine lettuce, had almost no flavor, a poor combination of textures, and the meat substitute was just really weird all-around. I would eat here again, but I'd probably just get a bunch of appetizers and do BYOB.

I've tried probably half of the menu at this point and everything is delicious. Everything is vegan, everything is awesome.

One time I ordered delivery from here and despite the fact that the main route (Montrose) between my house and the restaurant was closed for construction, they managed to get my order, make the food, and deliver it 2 miles away within 20 minutes. I'm not sure if they have some sort of helicopter they use for delivery, but it is certainly possible. I wouldn't expect deliveries that fast in the future, but it was certainly a pleasant surprise.

Everything here is vegan, it's byob, they deliver, they are nice.  The food is really tasty and I will be back. Love the pumpkin, basil and eggplant dish, they make food spicy if you ask for it to be, and their dinner/lunch specials are a great deal. Go here and your friends with dietary restrictions will be happy.

Also, if you dine in, you get miso soup with your meal.

I liked this place-really the veggie miso soup and the spicy tofu salad were great but it gets knocked down one star because the music was oh my GOD so terrible.  Just unlistenable pop country mainstream blah bland awful.  I'd recommend delivery or take out until they change that.  Honestly, classical music would be better-at least it would be neutral and it wouldn't make me feel so angry! Also, I'm really not into fake meat at all...so, to be honest I would just rather stick with the crispy and spicier options with tofu myself.  I tried the fake steak and it just didn't sit right but I've never liked the taste of actual beef either.  I became a vegetarian pretty young at 13 and have been one for almost 21 years now so I'm not really craving a substitute for the actual taste of meat-just like spicy, tasty, nutritious food overall.

Good vegetarian food with vegan options.  The restaurant is tiny.  In winter, be sure to sit as far from the front door as you can.
Food items are offered ala carte (which includes a cup of soup), or as dinner  with a choice of salad or soup.  You can choose the vegetarian meat substitute you want or tofu.
BYOB and they take credit cards.
Service is very good, but very quiet (my hearing isn't what it once was so I had trouble hearing the server).
    Washroom is very clean.
The majority of their business appears to be take out and delivery.
    I recommend Urban Vegan

Came here a few weeks ago on a Saturday night for dinner with a friend. The food was very good, I just wish so much wasn't focused on mock ingredients/soy proteins. We split the veggie tempura and then I had the orange "chicken" and tasted pretty good. Portions were huge and were plentiful for leftovers. I really appreciated that they let us sit there for a very long time (we made sure there were always available tables or we would have gotten up).
    I'd go back.

Not just great Vegan Thai food, but great Thai food period.  I have taken several omnivore friends here and they have all loved it.  The "chicken"  nuggets are to die for, definitely worth the extra buck or two to add 6 giant nuggets to your order. Yellow curry to die for. The only thing I have tried here that is less than amazing is the pad thai and egg rolls.

I wanted to take my vegetarian room mate out for dinner since he always cooks for me. I'm not a vegetarian, but rather a good sport who HATES cooking. Let me tell you: THIS PLACE MAKES ME THINK VEGANISM IS LEGIT AND POSSIBLE LIFESTYLE CHOICE! My vegetarian partner, my picky vegan room mate and I ALL thought every bite of food was great. The nuggets are especially great because of how crispy they are. We all shared the pad thai with soy pepper steak, the PET (pumpkin, Eggplant, Tofu) with soy shrimp and the orange chicken. Seriously, EVERY bite was inspiring and yummy. We all amused by the pink walls. I didn't even care that the place is small. This is honestly our new favorite vegan restaraunt-and that means a lot coming from my super picky room mate.

I disagree with Kat M.  and i'm not even being paid or bribed to do so. This is my honest critique. The food is so good that a grilled-meat-every-sunday Chicana like me can enjoy it, even without the textured soy protein.

I suppose it is nice for the vegans to know that that there is someplace they can head for Thai where they can be sure, once and for all, that they aren't being fed fish sauce.  And if you are at all into mock meats, this is the place for you!  They have soy chicken, soy fish, soy shrimp, soy steak, soy etc., all of which seem quite popular with the vegetarians who liked and miss eating meat.

Unfortunately, I'm not one of those vegetarians.  I don't eat meat because I don't like meat.  Stands to reason, that I'm not going to much like textured soy protein shaped to look and feel like meat.  Aw, well.  If you take the mock meat away from Urban Vegan, you are left with "just ok" Thai food that is a little on the pricier side.   Service is pretty disinterested, too.

And I had such high hopes.  Oh well.  I may try them again for takeout when I'm craving a fish-free green papaya salad and I don't want to make it myself.

Much like their sister location on Fullerton, this is the spot! Beautiful tasty Thai food served up super fresh and with great ingredients. I'm all about it.

Small restaurant and fills up quick!

Asian food without fish sauce? 100% vegan? YES, my dreams have come true. The space is small but rather quaint. The prices are fair for all vegan goodness and they also offer a pretty cool "lunch menu" which runs all seven days of the week! You get a decent size portion of your usual dinner meal plus some spring rolls, salad and miso soup.

The only reason I'm not given this great place 5 stairs is because the service can be a little slow and at times when I have limited time it can be annoying but for the most part I enjoy taking my time to eat my meal.

    Amazing place for Vegetarians.
The red curry, green curry, pad Thai, fresh spring rolls were one of the best I have eaten. They only serve brown rice. The spicy fried rice was not upto the mark. It was not spicy and didn't taste good.
Very small. Can barely seat 16 people. So don't go with a big group.

I give it 1 star for the service.
    SERVICE SUCKS !!

When you have to go up to the counter to get your waitress because she is talking, it's  a bad sign.
This continued for our entire meal. :(
    the food was 3 stars

but since I am voting with my $, i rather give my hard earn $ to another vegan restaurant where the service rocks.

I won't go back to Urban Vegan.

I don't want to write this review because Urban Vegan is so great that if word gets around, I'm afraid I won't be able to get a table on a weekend.  The food here is incredible: a paradise for Vegans.  (Carnivores should come, too -- you'll love it.)  The service is friendly, and I always feel at ease in the restaurant, even when the place is filled and the kitchen is really busy.  I've had a number of different dishes here, but especially love Praram's Plate, the Orange Soy Chicken, and the Vegan Salad.

Why have I eaten at this place 4 times in 2 weeks? Because A) it's damn good and B) it's a two minutes walk from home. Being a meat lover, I was highly skeptical that I'd become a fan. But, after eating at Urban Vegan several times, I love it. The secret to their dishes tastiness is the sauce. The yellow curry is incredible, and the green curry (warning, it's a bit spicier) is a close second. You MUST order the golden tofu app. It comes with an incredible dipping sauce that has hints of honey, red chillis, nuts and cilantro. We loved the sauce so much that we just started dipping everything into it. The spring rolls are fried to perfection and also come with a sweet dipping sauce. The complimentary miso soup is tasty and last but not least: the pad Thai is really really flavorful. Each dish has a choice of "meat" like chicken, shrimp, beef or tofu. Stick with the tofu or "chicken".

I'm a vegetarian but not a vegan, but that didn't stop me from wanting to eat here. My company included one other veg-head, non-vegan and one meat eater.
We all like Thai food, so this place seemed perfect hot, spicy food on a cool night was ideal, and since we had spiritual plans later in the evening, we didn't want to get too full or have alcohol (they don't serve it here but it is BYOB).
I had a terrific noodle dish with the faux pepper steak, which turned out to be a theme as my companions ordered their meals with it too. It's been ages since I ate meat, but if I were going to, I wouldn't mess with chicken or turkey or even pork - I'd go straight to steak. The faux stuff tasted yummy, and while somewhat more tender than real meat, that's hardly a problem.
One friend had a rice dish, another the spicy noodles. None of them were super spicy, I would have liked the food to be a more hot perhaps, but that's not a big deal. Meals came with miso soup, a tad sweet but still warming on a cool evening. We also had some veggie spring rolls, which were good. Next time I might try something a bit more adventurous.
The only dessert they had was friend bananas which we skipped. Perhaps in the future they can expand that area of the menu. In the mean time, I'll work my way through the entrees, something I can't do anywhere else.

We visited on a Saturday evening around 5.  The dining area has roughly eight tables, so it might get a bit crowded at peak times.  The single bathroom was clean, though the air freshener was a bit overpowering.

We ordered the Grand Tempura as an appetizer.  It is a pretty massive portion.  We liked the vegetables (sweet potato, eggplant, zucchini, broccoli, etc.), but the shrimp simulation was a bit odd.  We're not big on shrimp, anyway, so people who like shrimp may find it more appealing.

Our entrees were a red curry with pepper steak substitute and the P.E.T. (pumpkin, eggplant, and tofu).  We liked the curry itself, but the pepper steak was mealy and had a hard time maintaining integrity when speared with a fork.  This dish would be much better with tofu or possibly the chicken pieces.

The pumpkin in the P.E.T. was pretty strange.  It looked like it might've come from a pumpkin, but it was very starchy, falling apart when approached by a fork.  It also lacked the sweet pumpkin essence that we'd hoped for.  The garlic sauce in the dish was fine, if uninspiring.

Overall, it was a decent meal, but Chicago is so full of Thai restaurants (some of them superb) that it's unlikely we'll be returning any time soon.

The food is good, except for the fact that they messed up my delivery order and forgot to give us rice after we paid extra for the dinner combo.  After paying $32 for delivery fees and all of that stuff it's a real pain in the ass to get your food and the order is incomplete and incorrect.  They also gave us seitan instead of soy chicken.

I don't mean to sound like a prima donna but it was disappointing.  I recommend calling to place your order instead of using grubhub.

Hahahaha, ugh, people who are "afraid" to try vegan food but eat whatever meat a restaurant serves them are hilarious. You'll eat a hot dog but it's WEIRD to you that you can make decent food out of ground-up soybeans? Weirdos.

Anyway, this place rules. The orange "chicken" is to die for -- great texture, perfectly fried, drizzled with incredible sauce. Chunks of actual orange flavoring it.

Pad thai is good too -- not much that you need to veganize about that anyway. Unsurprisingly, they cook tofu really well.

Fresh spring rolls are huge, great texture, delicious. I like that they give you the chili sauce on the side so you can use as much or as little as you want.

I have a confession: I'm a carnivore. I love wings, seafood, all things bacon and an occasional burger (I don't eat much red meat). That being said, I would like to consume less meat. I also enjoy trying new things so I gave Urban Vegan a go. I've made vegan brownies before and they were awesome. Other vegan foods can't be too bad then, huh?

I had the spinach and "shrimp" noodles and Freshy Rolls. My dish was spicier than expected, but good! I was scared to try the fake shrimp, but it was surprisingly delicious. The texture was similar to regular shrimp so it wasn't too weird. The rolls were very refreshing and went well with the spicy dish. Four come in an order and they are HUGE!  Delivery was pretty quick and I would definitely order from here again!

A 4.5-star average over 130+ reviews is a mighty Yelp showing for a modest hole in the wall in Ravenswood.  Thai options abound in this vicinity, but clearly many customers are picking up what Urban Vegan is laying down.  Meat is not missed in these entrees.

My wife and i have gotten takeout from here before, but last Friday night dined in for the first time.  It's a cozy place, perfect for brisk autumn nights, but fellow diners' conversations can make the space boisterous.

On the menu I noticed a dinner special, something that I've never seen before.  It's more robust than a standard lunch special:  entree, rice, salad, soup, and spring rolls for about twelve bucks.  It seems like a heck of a deal, especially because none of the items are an afterthought.  The miso soup is pretty standard, but the hearts of romaine forming the bulk of the salad was a nice surprise, and I absolutely loved the miso dressing.  The crispy spring rolls tasted good, if a little mushy inside, with the vinegary sauce provided.  The rice that they serve is a very dark brown rice that looked like Cocoa Krispies but matches up well with the entree that I chose, spicy basil with tofu.  I've had this dish at many restaurants, and this was a very satisfying version, with a dead-perfect (for me) level of heat.

Good work, Urban Vegan:  you've managed to stand out in a largely homogenous lineup.

I love Thai food! This place, I must say is one of my favorite places to dine. I tried for the first time a few months ago and I generally get take out. This location is pretty small and actually rather full when I went. I have eaten at the other location. My favorite - the spicy noodle. Try to make it in time for the special, it's worth it. This is great for both vegans and non-vegans.

Awesome food. I'd give the food a 4.  It's a bit pricey but consistently good.

However, they have got to get a handle on the delivery...have ordered a few times now always takes at least 30 minutes longer than the time they tell me it well, usually around 90 minutes.  Which is crazy.  Honestly, after tonight I may actually think twice about ordering again.  90 minutes is nuts...it's like 6 blocks from me.

Urban Vegan is simply delicious.  I've never had a bad experience here.  My favorite is the orange chicken, for some reason I'm always encountering people who absolutely LOVE the orange chicken at Panda Express and I've never understood that infatuation, even my mom, who doesn't like anything loves Panda's orange chicken.  The ONLY orange chicken I will ever understand is Urban Vegan and it is delightful!  The "chicken" even tastes better than Panda's, ha.

The location at Montrose is small, but they always seem to make it food.  This is place is more focused on food and taste, rather than, cramming people in there so it's perfectly OK to carry out or deliver.  If only they were in my perimeter, I'd order here more often.

Go here if you want all-around goodness and is guilt-free as everything is vegan and in an urban area, hence, Urban Vegan, no lie!

Holy Vegan!  I don't know how I haven't gone here sooner, but I will definitely be back for more.  I ordered the Pad Thai with soy chicken and added the soy sauce (amino acid?) and it was out of this world fantastic!!!! For reals.  My friend ordered the orange chicken and it was seriously yummy too (I might order that next time).

The only issue I had was that the credit card machine was having trouble printing out my receipt and as the woman was on the phone trying to fix it, the power went out on the block.  I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that I don't get charged twice.

After some supposedly vegan thai disasters (chicken chunks and fish sauce in your tofu curry, anyone?), it is wonderful to have a restaurant where I can order anything on the menu without worry. Oh yeah, and it's also completely delicious!!!

This time around, I ordered tom kah soup and the yellow curry (more like Masaman) and the dinner deal came with crispy veggie rolls and a small salad.  This was delivery and the order was quick, hot, and tasty!

We've eaten in here, as well, and the service was super friendly and fast.  This is a great place for a quick lunch.  Bring your vegan self, vegan friends, or your open mind (and healthy appetite)!  Enjoy!!!

I was in Chicago a few weeks ago and meeting up with friends for dinner.  One was a vegetarian so we decided to try this place.   I guess I'd never realized that Thai food is pretty vegan friendly since it uses coconut milk.  Quite the revelation.

I ordered the green curry dish with tofu which is my go to Thai dish.  I got the combo plate which comes with soup, spring roll, and a salad PLUS my dish consisted of the curry and rice.  The rice was a purple color and quite good.  It had more flavor then just regular steamed rice that normally comes with Thai food.  I loved that the tofu wasn't fried beforehand as it sometimes does.

It was a lot of food but the presentation was lovely.  And I felt like you got enough of everything to be satisfied.  I ate every bit on my plate (as I was getting ready to board a 10 hour plane ride and hate plane food) and was pleasantly stuffed.

Our waitress was super nice and provided useful tips as we (or at least my friends) were deciding what to order.  I would definitely say you should give this place a shot!!

    Awesome. Amazing. Outstanding.

Unfortunately, I have never dined in the restaurant but only ordered from them.
My food always comes fast, with a friendly delivery person and the food is always hot.
Speaking of the food, it is amazing. For those of you who like meat, you wont even be able to tell that some of this isnt meat (the chicken satay and pad see ew with chicken are my personal favorites). And for those of you who dont eat meat (like myself) you will love it just as much: the vegetables are fresh, the food is substantial and filling and it is just amazing.

The peanut sauce they use is OUT OF THIS WORLD.

    SO. GOOD.

I tried this after reading the reviews and they did not steer me wrong. I had the orange chicken, though I don't usually order this, and I have been dreaming about it ever since. I can't wait to have it again, though I want to try everything on the menu.

I also had the veggie dumplings which were equally amazing.

They delivered promptly and the food was still hot, though next time I will probably dine-in. Cannot wait.

After working a booth at a market, we wanted to get something healthy and close to home.  So, I remembered there was a vegan restaurant close to the house.  By any means, I am not a vegan but I am always open to new experiences (especially those experiences close to home).

After arriving at 7p, we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table (very small place).  After being seated, we were greeted again by a very nice host.

For an appetizer, we ordered mixed combo of tempura (shrimp tofu, sweet potatoes, zucchini, squash, and eggplant).. Delicious. Surprisingly enough, the shrimp tofu tasted like shrimp.  Amazing.

Then the host brought miso soup (on the hose).  And as the last appetizer, we had veggie dumplings.  By the time we got to our main course, we were slightly full.

The main course, we ordered  PET (Potatoes (sweet), Eggplant, and Tofu).  It had a very peppery sauce.  The other main was params platter with tofu.  The sauce was peanut and there was a lot of it but delicious.

For drinks, we had a lemonade and fruit smoothie.

Overall, very good.  Would definitely recommend and return to try something else.

For about one week, I was on a hunt for vegan spots. Why? Beats me..

I'm not a vegan. I'm far from it. I enjoy meat, with the occasional serving of vegetables.

But hey, I'm broadening my horizons.

When I first heard of Urban Vegan, I immediately thought of Thai food.....NOT. I sat down with my fiancee and had a late dinner only to find that my favorite Thai dishes had been veganized. But that's not saying I didn't enjoy it.

The food itself was pretty good. To be honest, I left feeling very full...and I took home leftovers. I know, madness.

The food itself was flavorful, more so than I thought. My ignorant mind thought vegan food was, ya know, grass and straw and whatnot. Silly me. There's a whole world that I don't know, but I'm slowly making my way there.

First off let me start by saying that I am not a vegan.  I was doing a detox diet cutting out meats and dairy.  I was struggling to come up with meals on my own so I treated myself to Urban Vegan.

This was easily one of the best meals that I had while detoxing.  I had the green curry with pepper steak.  It came with spring rolls and a little side salad.  Everything was delicious.  I will definitely be back to try some of the other items even after my detox is complete.

This restaurant is awesome, I'm so happy that I've found this place! I love me some good Thai food, but usually end up getting stuck with bland vegetables that never get seasoned. Here, I get flavorful Thai with such a plethora of options, it takes forever to decide (and the service rocks too! Never an empty water glass).

Last visit was a rare snowy day, and snagged the last table for 2 early on a Sunday evening. Others arriving after us had a long wait, keep that in mind, this place is tiny! I'll be sure to make a reservation next time so we don't have to worry.

I like their combo meals which are accompanied by steamed brown rice, a fried spring roll, and a salad with a light dressing on the side.

I ordered the Drunken Noodle, which did have some heat to it once I ordered medium. I got it with the pepper steak which was pretty good. Had a nice texture, not rubbery or anything.

Husband let me try his Yellow Curry. Again, this was a nicely spiced curry with the seitan, which he liked, I thought it was just OK.

Another favorite of mine is the P.E.T. (Pumpkin, Eggplant, and Tofu). Because I'm a sucker for the protein, I add the soy chicken and order this medium spicy, which adds a nice kick.

The smoothies looked awesome, and there was a guy who I thought was going to pass out from not taking a breath, he was inhaling it! They also have a nice tea collection but they are BYOB too.

They're open for lunch Tues - Sun. Note that lunch special combos are $10, and I'm not sure if they make the combos smaller for a lunch portion or not. They also have wraps and sandwiches, which along with vegan cheese and fries also brings it to the $10 mark. A little steep for my lunch budget, but nice to know they're open in a pinch.

Absolutely unreal food!  Definitely the best veg*n food in Chicago....  Urban Vegan trumps Teapot in Seattle and Red Bamboo (and VP2) in New York --- So happy to have finally found such a great restaurant!!

Quick delivery but make reservations if you're dining in; spectacular food and small atmosphere = fills up fast.
