They truly do an honest to goodness Chicago Style Dog.

From the snappy casing, to the poppy seed bun, all the way up to the toppings and celery salt, this dog was pretay pretay pretay damn good. Plus the fact that they serve up some truly tasty curly fries to go with it, well, let's just say that this was one heck of a delicious cheap meal...

    Enjoy Suckas'!!!

BTW, they sell all the ingredients you would need to do the dog at your own place, or to bring somewhere else, maybe even a place where they still use ketchup on their dogs like lil' children.

I totally agree with the lunch line comment...I didn't come here for organization though...I came here for a great dog.  I think the kids and I have been here an embarrassing 3 times??  We came on a recommendation from a Secret Chicago book and then have brought others for the "flavor".  It is true Chicago...great dogs, fun servers in line to check out and if you get there at lunch time for the factory then oh my goodness the people watching!!!  Great Chicago dog!

Also recommend the Chicago dog set that you can buy to take home-has all the toppings in it and even has a little menu to show you the order to make your dog at home.  The daughter posted it in the refrigerator so we are ready at any time!

Delicious. We randomly came across this place and have it a try. Great decision. Friendly staff. They asked how I'd like to personalize my outset. Nice touch. Delicious 'dogs. Add the chili! Would highly recommend this place. Good value, too. Two double dogs, corn dog, spicy sausage dog - only $14. Yum.

I love Vienna beef products but the service at the factory could be better. Its similar to that of a high-school lunch line. Very disorganized and the folks taking the orders could be a little friendlier. Its the Chicago style weenies that keep me coming back. and I mean c'mon you gotta go to the heart of it all.

Vienna Beef makes really good hot dogs and the cafe puts out a good Chicago dog.
The cafe offers other items such as deli sandwiches, burgers and fries.  We only ordered hot dogs.  I've driven by this place so many times but they were never open. The service is on the slow side and the hours are really restrictive.   You can also purchase their products to take home.  It's worth a stop if you are in the area around lunch time.

This place has difficult hours to meet (closes by 3pm) and is located at a high traffic intersection (Damen and Elston). I've made more than one failed attempt to check the place out.....but it was well worth it!!  When you're craving a solid Chicago style hotdog, theirs will not disappoint.

Of course, as someone who practices employment law, I like that the public can have access to the same cafeteria as the workers. Makes me feel slightly connected to that former more industrial part of Chicago.

In addition to the cafeteria offerings, they sell packaged hotdogs. The bulk rates are sometimes great deals.

Love the fact that not only can you buy Vienna products, but you can also purchase a nice lunch, Chicago style of course with beverage. For the lunch crowd its not bad at all as far as wait is concerned, but the earlier the better.

You can also buy from their store if you would rather take things home. Buy yourself a case of Vienna's and trust me you will know what its all about as far as Chicago Style Hot Dogs. Located near Damen right off the 90. This is one of those places that you will love going.

It's always good to come to Chicago and visit the Vienna Beef cafeteria. Above average jumbo dogs with all the traditional Chicago toppings. This was a very good quality dog. Not the best we've tried but it's up there for sure.

The atmosphere of at Vienna is pretty great. Fast and friendly cafeteria style hangout for construction workers, families, suits and ties, and everyone in between.

Really loved the fries. Boardwalk cut with the skins still on the potatoes. Deep fried. Served hot and saltless so you'll have to add your own. But these are probably the best fries at a hot dog joint I've tried so far in Chicago.

Definitely worth stopping in even if traffic is heavy and the lines are long. Not the best dog but well above average.

What a find!  We were in Chicago for a couple of events.  On the way from one to the other, we needed to grab some lunch, so we got off the expressway and started keeping our eyes open for a good hot dog stand.

It was then that I noticed a really big Vienna Beef sign.  We headed towards it and discovered that it was the Vienna Beef Factory Store and Deli.  Kind of the "mountaintop" of Chicago hot dogs!

The dogs were reasonably priced and -- not surprisingly -- tasted excellent.  The next time we are downtown, we'll be sure to keep the Vienna Beef store and deli on the short list of lunch options

I was told it is not a Chicago Dog unless it's a Vienna Beef.
Well, why not go to the factory store and get it where it is made.  2 dogs and cheese fries was a great introduction to Chicago after just stepping out of the plane in O'Hare 30 minutes before.  Dogmazing!

It was my first Chicago Dog.  Fast, friendly service served with every poppyseed bun. Tiny pickled green relish that looks nuclear and so unnatural sprinkled along the top was my favorite.

I'm a Coke-Cola purist and thank goodness that the factory understands that there IS a difference between Coke and Pepsi that they offer ... BOTH!! Stuffing beef parts in a tube and being socially conscious, what a great combination.

I think I have to give this place five stars on principle, as it's the home of the legendary and yummy Vienna beef hot dogs. These hot dogs are so incredibly good, anything that is associated with them will be better. Had the Hinderburg been carrying these hot dogs, it would not have crashed. Oh, the humanity.

The place itself is pretty great in this way: You can get any of Vienna's products there, be it a hot dog, a Polish, or something more rare, like their new chicken sausage. They have all the fixins, too, to make them legit Chicago dogs, but you can get them any way you want, plain, with chili, etc. So if you like Vienna, you can get it here, and oh boy, it's good.

To boot, there's a gift shop when you come in the door, so you can get your Vienna gear, and on top of that, you can buy big boxes of hot dogs, Polishes, corn dogs, bagel dogs, etc., not to mention buns, mustard, pickles, anything you'd need to have your own hot dog shindig.

The only real setbacks to this place are the location--kind of a warehouse-looking place that's not really close to anything (but worth the trip), and the place also seems to double as the factory employee lunchroom/snack bar. So along with other tourists, there were a bunch of employees hanging out, along with a whole wall of vending machines that had pop, candy, etc. So, the ambience is kind of reverent to Vienna, but also like a break room of any factory, which isn't really where most people choose to grab a bite.

All in all, Vienna is a Chicago icon and you should go there, even if you eat the dogs at one of the million or so locations in the city that sell them. It's a pilgrimage.

Being born in Chicago, but really not a native or even being back to visit as an adult, I was dying to try some hometown grub when I finally made it back March 2010.

This was one of the stops, late night, after a busy night of exploring.  The food fit the bill.  I don't remember what it was or what I had, but I remember loving it.  I didn't have an Italian Beef, I had a weiner... LOL.

Chicago hot dogs at their finest - fresh off the factory line and on perfectly steamed poppyseed buns
Absolutely love it here - not a fan of the fries but they don't count when reviewing this place! ;-)

If you are an aficionado of the Chicago-style hot dog, than this is THE place to get your dog on.  The wonderful ladies at the lunch counter will satisfy your wiener cravings.  The dogs are prepared "by the book" in case you aren't sure of what constitutes the perfect Chicago-style dog.  Be sure to pick a 5lb box of hot dogs to make at home including neon green relish, sport peppers and mustard.
I only hope that new mayor Rahm declares this a national landmark - long overdue.  But, then again I take my dogs seriously.

I've driven by this place my whole life and never thought to actually stop and grab a bite.

    Until today.

All I can say is that they are the originators of the Italian Beef sandwich (if they're not, they should be). I was craving one for weeks and weeks, and I couldn't think of a place to go to grab one on the NW side. As I drove through the Fullerton/Elston intersection, I thought, "Oh yeah... the Deli!"

My son and I just got finished fighting over the last quarter of the sandwich. I liked that the friendly guy behind the counter asked me if I wanted my bread "dipped." I should have asked for more peppers, but it was okay: the meat was very flavorful. The true test of a good sandwich? It survived a road trip back to Wisconsin, 7 hours of refrigeration, and was delicious out of the microwave!

I'll have to go back and try the dogs. Believe me, it was hard not to grab a few to take on the road.

I think you need to go here to have a complete Vienna Beef experience.

You can order your hotdogs and eat with in the employee cafeteria with the workers. You can also buy hotdogs and eat outside in the summer under umbrellas. There is also the option to buy packaged products. YUM.

The third and final stop on wifey and my hot dog tour of Chicago and it was the best!!!! This is a small cafeteria attached to the Vienna Beef Factory. There were tons of people from the factory with hardhats and hairnets sitting there enjoying the fruits of their labor just like we were. Everything about the hot dogs were great. We had regular dogs with everything plus I had a chili dog. If you are in Chicago and you only have time to stop for one hot dog, you must go to this spot.

All I can say is "Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!"

So this is where hot dogs come from!

A hot dog factory is not the most glorious of places as no one wants to see how sausage is made. A visit to the Factory Store was definitely on my Chicago Bucket List, and I sped right there after France was unceremoniously wiped out from the 2010 World Cup in utter shame. I was dejected and the overcast skies gave no hope until I saw the familiar Vienna Beef Hot Dog logo on the horizon.

Entering the parking lot, it felt like trespassing. As I got closer, I saw tables set up outside with the Vienna Beef logo everywhere and some people chowing down on some big hot dogs. I was excited to see and went strolling right in.

Inside, I pulled out my camera and started taking pictures but then was warned by the worker, "No pictures, no pictures!" and was forced to put my camera away. Shelves upon shelves of hot dogs, encased sausages, burgers, Italian beef and all manner of food from the Vienna Beef kingdom lay at my disposal. I had no idea what anything cost since nothing had a price tag on it but I wasn't there to get food in bulk, oh no no.

Inside there is a restaurant section that serves up deli corned beef sandwiches, Italian beef, burgers and of course: the legendary Vienna Beef hot dog. Sorry peeps, if it ain't Vienna Beef, it is probably some combination of shite that I prefer not to touch (Hot Doug's excepted). The jumbo Vienna Beef is beastly and the skies open up and a ray of sunshine falls down with a chorus of angels chanting and harp strings plucking as the hot dog is loaded up chock full of traditional Chicago hot dog ingredients: onion, Hulk green relish, celery salt, mustard, dill pickle and tomato and hot peppers if you feel like it.

Bestowed with my new factory produced hot dog, I ran outside to give these dogs a new home......in my belly!  As soon as they arrived, they were devoured and it was certain on this day that the Vietnamese ate dog! Vienna Beef dog, that is!!! :D :D :D

Tired of standing in line for hours for encased meat? Waiting for the Food Network or Geoffrey Baer to do yet another program on the "Chicago Dog?"

What about going to the actual home of encased meat, the Vienna Factory? You can eat in and join a crowd that will likely make you feel thin and beautiful by comparison (unless you are Jerry Krause). You can get ready for your own Chicago hot dog extravaganza with everything from your run of the mill dogs to polishes and brats and the "all natural" preservative free ones. They've even got the electric green relish, celery salt, and dill.

And here's the thing: walk in the first set of doors. Turn left, walk in the second set of doors. Stop immediately and look to your right. There is a free standing ice tub with the seconds and short dated merchandise. This is why it's an actual outlet. And if you need a lot of something, ask the tremendously helpful people behind the counter if they have any specials.  They *always* have specials.

There are two downsides of this place. Approaching from the west or south forces you to contend with the Fullerton/Elston/Damen intersection, which has lights timed by Saddam Hussein. The other is the hours. As an actual factory, it has factory hours - I believe they're 8-4 M-F and 10-4 on Saturday.

All this is made up for by the deals, the food, and the local flavor. The day I was there two men were standing in front of a freezer case arguing about how they prepare sausages in "Jewtown."  I didn't know that the Deerfield/Northbrook area has particular sausage recipes - or that Applebee's even had hot dogs.

I was in the mood for a Chicago-style hot dog.
I made mother drive me to Hot Doug's.
I see outside of Hot Doug's a line around the corner.
Understand that this is a Monday at 3:00.
    Don't people have lives?
    GRRR....

So I say, "Hey Mother, I love you. Can we go to the Vienna Beef Factory Store?"
"Of course, sweetie" was her response.
    I love my mother.

We pull up to the cafeteria for Vienna Beef Workers and only the window is open.

"That's okay, we'll take it to go. Oh, giver of frankfurter." is more or less what I said.

    I UNWRAP MY DOG.

A Chicago-Style hot dog with no sport pepper. (have had bad experiences with sport peppers in the past)

I think if Hot Dogs were made like this all of the time, it could be the only meal i eat for the rest of my life.

DOWNSIDE: The bathroom smells like mustard.

I can't tell you how many times I've been to this place throughout the years. You can view it as a hot dog stand, deli, food store, what ever you want.

You'll get the classic Chicago seven dog prepared just the way it should be. It is worth trying the shoestring fries, double fried and they are better than most regular hot dog stands.

It makes sense that if you need beef brisket to make hot dogs, do other things with it like make corn beef, pastrami, salami, bologna and of course, beef brisket. You can even get an Italian beef from a brisket. Typically, Italian beef and roast beef will come from the round. Yep, they got that also.

Lately, I've been going for the sliced beef brisket. They got smoked and Texas BBQ, the only difference is that when the slices are dunked into their own bottled sauce, they then call it Texas BBQ. Now you might squawk that is not on a hamburger bun with coleslaw, but man, when the Italian bread starts softening up from the BBQ sauce, the bread still has the ability to stay together with a shit load of brisket in it. Those thickly sliced pieces of brisket my friends is better than the thinnest shaved Italian beef, ok maybe not better than Johnnie's, Al's, (fill in you favorite spot).

The sandwiches, I could go for a Reuben or Pastrami right now. Those sandwiches are even better than a perfectly prepared Chicago Seven hot dog. Who needs Katz's when we have our own little unbelievable New York deli right here. Shot me, I'm exaggerating.

Before you leave this little mecca of beef, check out the display case of all the different sizes and types of sausages that Vienna prepares. You want fresh, you can get fresh. You'll also notice the coolers, everything already has been packed.

You can get a lot of Vienna stuff in the Deli section of your local grocery store, but you are not going to find throughout the whole store an encased Vienna Beef Hot dog. That is why you come to the factory to get the real deal if you want to take it home or where ever. Sure you'll find skinless Vienna dogs in the grocery store, never encased.

The perfect Chicago Hot Dog. Everything is just right. I've had a surprisingly hard time finding a dog where everything is correct- either the pickle's wrong, there's no celery salt, no poppy seeds on the bun, etc. Not here.

Only 4 stars because I'm not crazy the fact that it's a cafeteria, so I usually take it to go.

After our fun little trip to Card and Party Giant on Halloween day like the rest of procrastinators, we were hungry. Usually when in this area, we frequent the boring, average fast food places. Since Vienna Beef was around the corner from our errand, we decided to stop in.

The factory store and deli is pretty unassuming and like your typical Chicago hotdog stand. We located the hot dog area and proceeded to order. My husband ordered the regular Chicago dog with a side of cheese fries for us to split while I ordered the Chicago double dog. Yes, I'm a glutton, but there's something awesome about being able to fit two hot dogs and all of the fixins into one bun. The hot dogs are steamed which is alright. I prefer char myself, but it's the Vienna Beef factory, so I'll let it slide. Our Chicago style dogs from the Vienna Beef factory were pretty standard fare, but they hit the spot. The cheese fries were delicious Chicago fare as well. Can't go wrong with cheese fries!

If anything, the Vienna Beef factory store and deli makes for great people watching. On Halloween Saturday afternoon, there were a mix of families with children in tow. I was impressed by a 10 year old digging into a corned beef sandwich. Her palate at such a young age gave me hope for the future. We saw some factory workers talking to food servers. However, I enjoyed watching the svelte, young, and sexy couple who had just come from working out at the nearby athletic club loading up on some simple, white carbs after a workout.

For my first visit there, I'd say that Vienna Beef Factory store is pretty cool. I like the no frills approach to Chicago hot dogs and that's how it should be.

We headed down to the hot dog factory this afternoon. I wanted Christopher to experience this place. Back in the early 70's I used to work across the street at MidTown Tennis Club and I had lunch at the factory nearly every day. Back then it was pretty much the only game in town as far as eating went. Needless to say after 2 years, I kinda od'd on the dogs, LOL.

After 35 years, I have returned!!!! We enjoyed the Chicago Dogs. Got them fully locked and loaded. We were not crazy about the fries, too flat, had to dump on a whole lot of salt. I like the soda alternatives, both coke and Pepsi products (yeah diet coke).

We bought a case of hot dogs (40 in a box). I am thinking of getting the condiment sets for Xmas gifts for out of town friends. You get a jar of plochmann's mustard, the neon green relish, sport peppers and celery salt. It comes in cool packaging too!!

All in all it was a fun trip down memory lane. It will not be another 35 years before I return!!

People are customized to the Costco hotdog.  If you ask me, that's corporate bull-crap.  A real hotdog, which is called a red hot, comes from Chicago.  It only consists of fresh ingredients: a steamed Vienna Beef dog in between a fresh poppy seed bun, yellow mustard, bright green relish, chopped onions, two tomato wedges, a kosher pickle spear, and two sport peppers.  Since my family is from the North side, I am not a fan of the pinch of celery salt that is on top.  If you go to a good hot dog stand, you can buy all of this and a nice cold coke for two bucks.

My uncle usually takes me to Mickey's.  Another red-hot joint is Fluky's on Maxwell Street, which was my Grandma's first job.

My uncle tops all of those places by taking me to the Vienna Beef factory.  Even though Fluky's and Mickey's serve great products, they both use Vienna Beef.  The Vienna factory has a butcher shop and you can buy hotdogs on the links, all different sizes.  My uncle and I buy and eat the dinner franks.  These hotdogs are as wide as a baseball and as long as a foot long.  We dress them up and eat.  The bun is gooey and the accessories add crunchiness to the dog.  Once I have a Vienna Beef from the factory, nothing can compare.

I ordered a Chicago style dog (what else?) including all the trimmings. That means relish, pickle, onions, tomato, mustard, sport peppers, and seasoned salt on a poppy seed bun. The peppers are hot. So hot in fact that they put a warning sign in the window. No joke.

The dog was good, but I think I was more impressed with the fries. They are fresh cut, greasy and crunchy at the same time.

After lunch I spent a few minutes browsing the factory store where I discovered several vienna beef products that I had no idea existed  including an "all natural" dog. Interesting...

    I will definitely be back!

I live just a few blocks from here now, darn I'm moving soon. I'm going to miss this place so much.

Perhaps it's a good thing, too many hot dogs and deli not so good for your health, ah but for your taste buds, going here will make those happy. I love stopping in here for a quick bite before I go to Costco.

If your planning a party, you can stock up too, buy the dogs by the box or check out the bags of irregulars for even a better deal.

Boo hoo...I'm just going to have to drive here.

I have a fond memory of this place, but that's another story that will remain untold. But it does not affect my review....

I did not start going here until I started working down the street from this place. Wish I had known about it sooner but better late than never. I've never had a bad hot dog here. Top notch Chicago style dogs. But I love the italian beefs even more. Yum. If I get a beef any place else, it's only because I'm too far away from this place or it's already closed for the day. Speaking of which, my only gripe with this place is that it closes too early.

The Vienna Beef Factory Store and Deli is real Chicago.  They have the faux wood paneling on the walls with the requisite framed sports jerseys everywhere.  Somewhere behind the walkup counter are some amazing line cooks (think the diner scenes from Blues Brothers) listening to a 1980s-era silver boombox (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wallstreetdropout.com%2Fimages%2FSony_CFS-43.JPG&s=580124f411ac09d83998a28e9f7810110407e80b6088e0fa3d8995b482335426" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.wallstreetdro…</a>), bopping away while frying up delicious Chicago style dogs, burgers, fries, etc.

Ok. On to the food.  The Chicago dogs they serve there are pretty authentic, right down to the celery salt and the weird neon green relish.  Poppyseed bun?  Check.  Hot peppers, tomato slice, pickle and mustard?  Check.  The fries were relatively flavorless and greasy, but it's cool.  I still love you Vienna Been Factory Store and Deli.  Plus, you can stock up your bomb shelter w/ enough frozen Vienna Beef products to last 2 decades.  How can you lose?

The hot dog was great.  I got it with everything on it, just the way they feel a "chicago" hot dog should be.  No ketchup.    But they do include a pickle on top, as well as tomatoes, mustard, atomic green Chicago style relish, and some small peppers.  A pretty delish combination really.  The bun completely disintegrated while I was eating it..    The fries were pretty kickin' too.

This place is like a douche bag express on weekends.  One guy--surely he drove in straight from Bridgeport--remarked "I'll have the two dog Chicago special with everything, if you put ketchup on it i'll come back there and drown your face in it" ... uHh, ok buddy.  get a grip, we get the point.  You're cool.  Actually, two others in line decided they'd make a scene about "no ketchup" too, with similar remarks.

My hot dog took forever, then when it was finally ready the guy called out to some girl who ordered 5 minutes after I did? (I think the perv worker thought she was hot). I ordered, paid, waited... some girl came, ordered the *exact* same thing she did, yet somehow he was sure the one he put up on the counter was hers.

Being a beautiful summer day, I ate outside.  You know the place is full of douche bags when there are 6 nice, covered picnic tables out there yet there are 15 people sitting inside under the fluorescent lights.  You get a nice view of the parking lot and can overhear the commotion of the nearby Damen/Fullerton/Elston intersection.

I kinda agree with a few others who have said for a factory outlet it isn't as inexpensive as it really should be...  It was $2.75 or so for a hot dog and small fry, drink $2 more.   The Italian beefs were over $6.  There are a LOT of other places that aren't directly in the factory that would sell you the same Vienna beef dog for less, and they even had to pay a middleman or two!

They have a pretty extensive menu outside of hotdogs.  Just a little bit of everything you'd see at a typical Chicago grill... they also have breakfast.

All in all, still a good place to visit, and a good way to see a slice of Chicago, if you can deal with the annoying crowd.  Though the annoying crowd is also part of what makes it very "Chicago" ...

Vienna Beef IS Chicago.  Accept no substitutions.

Go here for lunch and get a classic Chicago-style hot dog with fries.  So what exactly is a Chicago-style hot dog?  It's a Vienna Beef hot dog topped with mustard, relish, onion, pickle, tomato, sport peppers & celery salt.  No ketchup!

In the store you can purchase hot dogs, polish sausages, corned beef, and other products like neon green relish and sport peppers.   Stock up on hot dogs for barbeques and picnics.  Easy to prepare and everybody loves 'em.

My general rule of thumb when going to hot dog places in Chicago is that they MUST serve Vienna Beef hot dogs.  If your sign says "Vienna Beef", you better be serving it.  I've been to some places with false advertising, and trust me, my taste buds know the difference.  Vienna Beef has been around since 1893.  Generations of Chicagoans KNOW a good hot dog and this is it.  Accept no substitutions.

    Welcome to vegetarian hell...

You can't get any closer to where your food is produced without hearing their agonizing death screams.

(There, that should have gotten rid of them)

    Dear Fellow Carnivores,

Jenny Z and I hit up Vienna Beef to stock up for our birthday party and grab a quick bite on the run.  I cannot believe I had no idea that there was a deli in the factory.  I had the most delicious italian beef while Jenny had a Chicago Dog "drug through the garden".

In addition to the food being top notch, the prices are incredibly cheap.  We walked out with enough burgers and dogs to feed 40+ people for under $80...  amazing

I've been going here for years, used to be a best kept secret.  Sometimes, I was the only one without a hairnet and a white coat.  But things have changed, people have discovered my beloved little gem.  But thats okay.  I'm right down the street everyday and it only takes a minute to get there.  The dogs are juicy and delish and the price, well come on, its down right criminal.  The beef to go is great for parties and the dogs, well freeze 'em in two packs!  They are so good it doesn't matter if you boil, grill, George Forman or cook them with a Bic.
And they aren't mean if someone asks for ketchup, they just look a little sad!

With apologies to Billy Joel this time:

    Slow down you crazy child
You're so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you're so smart tell me why
    Are you still so afraid?
Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You better cool it off before you burn it out
You got so much to do and only
So many hours in a day

You got your passion you got your pride
But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on but don't imagine they'll all come true
    When will you realize?
Vienna waits for you. . .

Hot dogs, that is. Right there on Damen at the Hot Dog Bridge. Life has presented you with a choice. You can spend $2.50 here at this comfortable and friendly cafeteria for the best hot dog ever (with fries) before your Costco trip (and you know you're going to need some sustenance for that, my friend). Or, after having waited in an obscenely long line at Costco to spend way way more money than you had ever intended on a 65 pack of fruit roll-ups--seemed like a good idea at the time-- you can fight the masses to obtain a Costco dog which is not as good and you have to put on your own condiments--though I do like that funny machine that dices the onions when you turn the crank. Anyway, it's up to you. I won't judge.

The Deli also has a good variety of daily soups and lots of sandwiches and serves breakfast. I think it would be a great place to take people from out of town.

Yeah I'm so punk rock I quote Billy Joel. Got a problem with that?

About a month ago, I finally ventured over to the Vienna Beef Factory. Since the Vienna Beef brand is Chicago's official hot dog, it's odd that it's taken me this long to make a trip over to the factory, especially since it's less than a mile from my apartment. At first, I wasn't aware that it was open to the public, but I must admit I found out the contrary several months ago and have done nothing with the new information. Well, I decided it was time to give it a try. I grabbed my bike and peddled over to the factory.

Once inside, I instantly noticed that there were a large percentage of construction workers on their lunch breaks, which my dad always taught me was a good sign and a clear indication at how good the food was at an establishment. There are three places to order from: take out deli meat, sandwiches, and hot dogs. Well, I was here for the hot dogs. I ordered a double dog which is two hot dogs on a poppy seed bun with all the trimmings. Chicago style trimmings are neon green relish, mustard, onions, sport peppers, tomato wedges, pickle, and celery salt.

Man, it was good! I've been here for over a year now and this is probably the most authentic Chicago hot dog I have eaten. Which makes sense since the dog comes from the factory/corporate office of Chicago's official hot dog. Now, I still love the other hot dog stands in my neighborhood, but the Vienna Beef factory is where I'm taking visitors who want an honest-to-goodness Chicago hot dog.

In the world of Chicago-style hot dogs the Vienna Beef Factory Store and Deli is Mecca!

Here's the REAL thing - all beef hot dogs with all the trimmings.  There's is also the full compliment of Vienna Beef products too.  Pastrami sandwhiches, Polish sausage, Italina beef - all served to dine in or order a pound or two to go.

Outside picnic tables in the warmer months (we have a couple of those!), make for a nice little lunch outing!
