Previously, I liked this place. LAST NIGHT some punk kid with crappy hair embarrassed an older lady by announcing that she was paying with food stamps. I was in front of her, leaving and there was a man in a suit behind her who looked at her like she was a walking piece of fecal matter.

I won't shop here again. EVER. What a heartless, ignorant and horrible thing to do to someone.

I hope that kid gets hit by a truck that leaves him with the same heartbroken face that he put on the old ladies' face.

Would give 5 Stars but there were out of the oranges and cheese I went there for. But for everything else its a 5 star place althought it does get crowded but hey who cares its nice, cheap and friendly. We go there all the time and love it. The parking lot is my favorite. It's like shooting craps.

This is a no-nonsense smallish store, but man, do they do great things with the small space they have!  I agree with other reviewers that the parking can be difficult, but its manageable, and well worth it once you get inside.  This place has terrific fresh produce, great prices on meat, good selection throughout (lots of little ethnic treasures).  It also has a funny very ethnic selection of bottles of beer by the registers, which can be fun (and a small wine and liquor selection).  The staff is pleasant, and they get you in and out fast.  The lines are never more than one person long here, so once you park you can really get in and out.

I also love this store.  I've been coming here about 4 years, and I probably go shopping here 2 times a week.

First of all, the downsides- as others have mentioned, the parking lot is a bit crazy and hard to navigate.  In 4 years I've personally witnessed at least 3 fender-benders, bumps or scrapes in the parking lot.  In other words, don't take your Mercedes here, take your Kia.  It can be very crowded at times, especially right before the weekend or right before a holiday.

Basically, here are the reasons that I frequent this store twice a week:

    1. Low prices!  Especially on produce.  My goodness, when I comes to produce I don't think I've ever spent more than $25 per trip, and sometimes this includes many, many different fruits and veges.  Prices on most other items are usually very good as well, but especially for produce.

    2. Good quality.  Most of the time the fruits and veges and good quality, although you have to look carefully and pick and choose at times.  Their deli has some great quality food as well....

    3.  European food.  I've lived a lot in eastern Europe, and this place has lots of imported items from Russia, Poland, Ukraine, etc.  All great quality items and prices are good.

    4.  Great specials.  Check their adds- they run awesome specials.

    5.  Good service- the cashiers and baggers are always very fast and efficient.

I'm heading there right now for a grocery run.  Keep up the good work!

I love this store. The specials are amazing, and I always feel like I'm robbing the place based on how inexpensive everything is! Occasionally there is an item on sale that isn't the greatest quality, but I'm always able to pick around that (for example, today the 49 cents/lb tomatoes didn't look so good, so I got the 69 cents/pound Romas)

    Actually, today I bought:
    a red onion
    a yellow onion
    a green pepper
    8 roma tomatoes
    a carton of cherry tomatoes
    10 small red potatoes
    a package of basil
    3 heads of broccoli
    brussel sprouts
    2 heads of garlic
    2 avocados
a pound of whole wheat pasta
    a container of shredded parmesan
    8 oz. cheddar cheese
    red pepper flakes
    3 apples
    3 bananas
    tortillas

    .......for $21.30

    Seriously. How is that possible?

Freshness and price are hit or miss.  Sometimes I stop in and fill a cart because the produce looks so good and/or is priced so well.  Other times I just get what I absolutely need and nothing else because it's either overpriced or nasty looking. Very convenient since it is on my route home.

Good selection. Great prepackaged items. Poor parking. So what.
One reviewer said shopping carts are a quarter-they were reviewing the store on Oakton. Another reviewer said no cell phone reception. To me thats a plus not having someone walk aroung talking out loud to nobody.
Come to think of it I'd paymore for a store or restaurant that blocked cell phone reception. Worlds greatest store hard to manuver with small spaces so stay of your cell phones and pay attention to your surroundings. Sound old, don't I.

This place is almost too much for a simple Aquarius like me.

First, the downside, and why I can't give five stars; the parking lot is way too small and totally insane. Subtract 1/2 star. How busy, you ask? Think Old Orchard on the Saturday before Christmas. Think five free, legal spots near Soldier Field, half an hour before the Bears/Patriots playoff game. Yes, that busy. I was in a line-up of 5 cars, 3pm, Martin Luther King Day. Yes, I know many people had the day off today (I didn't!), but geez, folks! When I saw how crazy the lot was, I told myself, forget this store, just get out of here and go back to Jewel. But a spot miraculously opened up before me, so I went in.

The grocery carts are located outside the door. It was raining today. All the carts were wet. Subtract 1/2 star.

You can't locate carts in the entryway to the store because there are racks of produce. Mostly apples, today. It was an obstacle course getting a couple fujis.

This store was busy and packed. Carts everywhere, all kinds of different languages spoken, lines at the delis, lines of people picking over fruit. . . guys, it was a little overwhelming.

Holy Freakin' Simon Cowell, the produce is inexpensive and gorgeous. It's January. A red pepper at Jewel costs $2.50. I bought a big, beautiful red pepper here for $.99! I don't even need a red pepper. I just wanted to pay a dollar for a nice one in January. And carrots . . .cucumbers . . . bagged lettuce. Would you believe, they had bagged carrots and individual carrots? If you only wanted two, you could buy two!

I did want two or three bananas, but they only had bags of eight. I'd have had to make banana bread in a few days . . . no bananas for me today.

There are Kosher foods, Arab foods, Polish foods, Indian foods,  items with languages I didn't recognize. A big deli counter. A big meat section. You could buy fresh feta, different kinds of olives in big vats, pastrami, and some cuts of meat I hadn't even heard of before. Somebody must want them, I guess. Greek yogurt. Organic products.
    Gluten-free products.

How do they all this stuff in a store that doesn't look so big from the outside? I was reminded of Dr. Who's TARDIS - the outside was a small, plain English telephone booth, but the inside was the size of a couple football fields, because the two existed in different dimensions. Maybe that's it . . . the parking lot is in one dimension, and the deli section is in another.

Friends, I have to tell you, I was a little overwhelmed. I probably need to make a couple more visits to take it all in. I got everything I wanted, including  a bottle of wine, for $21.25.

Jewel, it's all over between us. Oh, I may occasionally be back for a few items you carry that others don't, but your produce sales no longer entice me. I'm a Village Market girl from now on . . . as long as I can find a parking place.

I LOVE this store! The parking lot is crowded for a reason. The prices are great and the meat, the deli, the produce  and the grocery selection is all great. I've shopped here for a few years. I go to Village Market Place first when I need groceries, then Whole Foods or Dominicks or Target if I can't get it here.

How have I not written a review here? I must have. Oh right, cellphone reception is non-existent on their store for tmobile so I can't check in.

So before getting it, you should probably know that parking here is a bit of a pain in the ass. During rush hour it's going to be hard to get out after grocery shopping, and the parking during busy hours is pretty crammed.

I probably shop here once every 2-3 weeks. They are awesome for what it is. The produce is incredibly cheap and pretty good quality, and they also have a wide variety of ethic foods. For such a small location, the variety is huge. Notably there is a lot of Russian, Polish and middle eastern stuff here. Also for the fans of Ratners frozen stuff (a must for anyone who's never tried), they have a non-tofu (mostly potato) veggie burger which I cannot seem to find at most other grocery stores (including the awesome kosher jewel).  Beats the hell out of every other easy veggie burger.

They also have some nice breads, decent prices on meats, and have a pretty decent wine selection too since it includes some rare imported stuff - look up sometime and check out the unicorn liquor or whatever that crazy stuff is.

Not sure why people like this place.  Try Market Place on Oakton and if you don't think it is 100 times better I will buy your groceries...well maybe not but I can't comprehend why anyone would choose this place over Market Place on Oakton.  Here's why:

My wife and I decided to try Village Market Place for the first time this week.  First off, I noticed that the store is extremely crowded with products cluttering the isles.  It is truly single file especially if you want to push a cart.  We were disappointed in the selection of produce to begin compared with our old standby Market Place on Oakton also in Skokie.  We were not able to locate any organic produce or staff to inquire about.

We bought some peaches and brought them home to find out they were inedible and mealy.  I tried to return them a few days later and the manager on duty told me since I didn't have my receipt that I was obviously lying and that they had to be at least 2 weeks old.  I said, it was fair that they wouldn't take them back without a receipt, but I would like to try the piece of fruit before I bought peaches again.   He told me,  "that if I want to try it, I had to buy it".  I asked, "How can I tell if the fruit is any good?  He said, "It is because I buy it everyday".

I then proceeded to buy 1 peach so I could try it again.  I went across the street to Starbucks to wash it off and took a bite.  Sure enough, the ripe looking and feeling peach was mealy and not up to par.  I went back to the store and wanted to show the manager.  He was in the parking lot yelling at customers that were trying to park as the delivery truck was parking.  I waited and told him politely that I would to discuss his peaches.  He told me to wait and then walked back in the store and left me outside waiting.  I had to track him down in the store and showed him the peach.  I told him that I respect his business and obviously he had a great business, as it was so busy and crowded.  I told him that this peach I had just bought (I was holding my receipt) was not good.  He again had no desire to speak with me and he walked off.  I thought he was going to refund my money.  I told him that I'm not interested in a refund, but I would like some help picking out my fruit.  He said, "Thanks for the advice" he said, and walked off rudely again.
I'm really not that mad about the $4 I originally spent on the fruit.  I just frustrated by the principle of rudeness and the way this guy is running the business.  I was truly hopeful about The Village Market Place as it is closer to my house, but now I will not be returning, and sticking with my old standby Market Place on Oakton.  This is truly a wonderful, positive, and great fruit market with friendly staff and awesome peaches!

Produce, Produce, Produce! We are so happy to find a great place where we can get fresh tasty produce for a low price. We were spending so much money at the "usual" grocery store until we checked this place out. We are now hooked and would not go anywhere else. It's also great for hard to find ethnic foods! Mmmmm love it!!

Love it - as an Eastern European ex-pat and someone who likes to
save on produce... this store rocks!

Tons of fresh greenery, fruit and veggies - all half-price of leading chains like Dominicks/Jewel, and most often better quality...
Many types of apples and pears, many types of citrus, roots, lettuce etc.

The bakery features great variety (try Latvian rye and Lebanese large pita). There is a cooler with ready-to-eat Russian, Greek, Polish specialties, like Oliv'ye salad and Cabbage Rolls (may I say yum... these are very good, much better then mom's who I hope will never join Yelp to read this).

Another thing that's great is their deli... wow! For a smaller store, the selection is amazing (heck, it's amazing for a huge chain as well). There is Boar's Head, my favorite (try the Buffalo chicken breast), and many other Euro yummies (you can even get jelly tongue or blood sausage if that's your thing. Any type of ham, roast beef, turkey, sausage, etc. Great cheese selection, again from all over Europe.

Very good candy choices (your regular European favorites like Lindt and Peruglia and Rafaella, plus a gazillion you never heard off. Russian fancy large chocolate sets are available... Try the "bottles" with actual brandy and cognac.

There is also a freezer with many ethnic pre-made foods (hello, perogi!) and even Plombir ice-cream.

The layout is very smart, all employees are dolls. If you never tried something, just ask someone.
Also, the service is fast and no-nonsense. Even though the store is busy, you won't wait more than 5 mins to check out, if that.

(sidenote - no cold sale recitals the likes of "today's value of the week are gummy bears, Cottonel, Campbell select, super-power-ninja magic figurines, etc etc...  would you like to make a purchase? No? Ok. Would you like to donate to Go Red/Poor Baby/Women of Tomorrow charity? No? Ok. Do you have a Special Value card? No? Hehe, I'm sorry, I can't use mine..."
It took us once 20 minutes to check out at Dominicks.... no line. What's up with the special people manning the registers? I'm all for employing everyone, but how about stock room or bakery? Not only they take forever, two out of 4 times one of items is forgotten on the belt. sorry.... rant over).

Anyway, whatever you wish for is available at this cool store.
One thing you will *not* find - most of the American *snacks* (i.e, lard and corn syrup disguised with Red No 5 and artificial flavores).

So go check out the store. Support local businesses, people! The stronger our local North shore micro-economy, the lesser chance of the communities becoming dilapidated. Good for everyone.

Love this place. Just went here for my first time and was impressed by the fresh produce, ethnic food selections and baked goods provided by numerous local bakeries in the area. Skokie and Evanston is loaded with grocery options, this one certainly sticks out as being unique.

A semi-quick once over of this store resulted in 40 dollars of groceries, and I didn't even buy any produce! (Don't worry, I will be back very soon).

The space is small but well organized. The produce section looked great - they had some items that I don't usually see at the grocery, such as lychee, prune plums, green figs and some odd looking grapes. The real gem is the amount of ready-to-eat fish that you can find here - so many varieties of herring and lots of smoked fish at the deli counter.

I left with chicken liver pate, spinach dip, pumpernickel bread, marinated herring, frozen spanikopita, 3 jars of peanut butter & co. peanut butter (this stuff is incredible - try the dark chocolate dreams), nutella (on sale - score!), taramousalata, and a little can of pate.

There was so much other stuff I wanted to get! The frozen section made me die. Many kinds of blintzes, pelmeni, ravioli, and they even have Chinese dumplings!

The staff are friendly and they have KINDER SURPRISE (!!!!!) at the check out lines. Any place that brings back the joy of spending 5 childhood years in Belgium (filled with lots of Kinder chocolate) will get 5 stars.

I've never seen so much fresh delicious produce!  Freshly baked bread( they even have the good dark, grainy bread as opposed to just white).  Smoked fish, yummy looking deli & all different kinds of ethnic food.  I've never seen so much kefir in my life.  The only thing I expected more of is a better, wider selection of spices.  I wish I had a fresh market like this in my neighborhood.  Next time I go to old orchard, whenever that may be, I'm stopping here.

This is the best grocery store among other pretty steep competition in the area. You can buy groceries for a week for $40-$60 (depending on how much you rely on the deli and prepared foods).

The cashier staff is wonderful, as is the deli staff who always offer recommendations and a "taste" of the thousands of options of salami, cheese on sale, corned beef...etc.

If you're new, I would try dry Evreskaya salami (beef), Havarti ($4.99/lb cheaper than anywhere else), prepared chicken liver pate, cold smoked mackerel & prepared ginger/octopus salad. Delicious.

The vegetables and fruits are unique, fresh and inexpensive. I'm going to go make myself a sandwich right now, after a very rewarding shopping experience. ** Note, the review that mentions the shopping carts, that's not this store, you might be thinking of marketplace on oakton. To the other review that said it's cramped and hard to park, that only happens on mid-day weekends. Stick to shopping in the mornings or weekday evenings.

Lastly, to echo the other reviews: YUM!

Mmmmmmmmmm........ I don't know who stole my grandma... but they done good!

The deli here has an amazing assortment of Russian-type salads and zakuski, which are priced so reasonably that I go there when I can't find time and stock my fridge with these home-made tasting treats.

I would HIGHLY recommend trying out these snacks... and the produce also is pretty great.

I go there at least once a week, usually twice.
It has a great selection of fruit and veggies and always fresh!
The only complaint is that the prices aren't as competitive as I thought. It's super close to me, so I wouldn't go anywhere else for produce.

Also, they have already made food, such as salads and dinners.

Even though I live right by this place, I had never gone in until this weekend. Me and my boyfriend absolutely loved it! Even though it's a small store, they had everything on my list (including Asian eggplants) and the prices were really good. I didn't need any spices on this visit, but they had a whole wall of them for 99 cents each, which I found pretty incredible. The checkout woman was also friendly and a little weird (in a good way). It was a refreshing change of pace from the cookie-cutter Dominicks that I usually shop at.

I have absolutely no idea why I have been going to the grocery store for my produce!  My sister and I had heard that the fruits and veggies here were the freshest as well as being half the price of the ones you need to dig through at the local grocery chains.  Last week I made caprese salad skewers with fresh basil, buffalo mozzarella balls, and cherry tomatoes all from the Village Market Place and I couldn't believe how delicious everything was.  They also have a ton of unique ethnic packaged and fresh foods worth checking out for the adventurous chef or even diner.

Was in the neighborhood yesterday and stopped in to buy some pita bread - and discovered it was more interesting and less expensive than I remembered (and you no longer need a quarter for a shopping cart .)  Interesting mix of Eastern European and Middle Eastern foods.

VERY reasonable meat prices and in deli for cheeses and cold cuts. Interesting selection of smoked fishes and some prepared salads.

Fresh produce doesn't hold a candle to the selection at The Market Place on Oakton - but still much more reasonable than your local Jewel or Dominicks. Definitely worth a stop - IF you are in the neighborhood.

If you're going to go here, make sure to bring a quarter along!  Cart rentals cost a quarter (which you get back when you return it).

I've always had a good experience with this grocery's fresh meats and produce. They really specialize in ethnic foods, though, and these I have not tried. It caters mainly to the nearby Eastern European population, and seems to have quite a following.
