Wah mei lost sone serious points tonight due to awful customer service. We live blocks away and we order take out from here quite often. One might think that they would treat us like regulars and take care of us- but my experience here was the absolute opposite. They gave me the impression that they do not care about our ( regular) business at all and I am going to think twice next Sunday evening when we decide where to pick up dinner from.
My husband picked up dinner for our family, and I noticed they had given me the wrong entree. I called and explained this to them, however since we were trying to feed 3 very hungry toddlers and I had literally just gotten off a plane an hour prior, we couldn't go back to pick it up. Fine, they would give me a credit but only good for 2 weeks!! What!!! I protested saying it should be good indefinitely and was told through the end of the month and that was it. So I asked for a refund. Nope, just a credit for 3 more weeks. Excuse me, but who screwed up the order?? Unacceptable.
Wah Mei is a charming little hole-in-the-wall Chinese takeout right off the Linden Purple Line CTA stop.
I wanted some Chinese food to eat during a long night at the office, so I decided to hit up Wah Mei since it's been getting generally solid reviews. I came in with some high expectations (since I hail from the Chinatown that is Los Angeles), and they met them adequately.
The ambiance:
It's spartan and homey. You're welcomed in the door with a dining area that fits maybe 6 people and a lady standing next to the cashier. You will likely be the only patron there, but no matter--this makes for all the more intimate your experience with the lady. You're then made to feel at home by getting offered a (free) cup of water while ordering your take-out choice. There you've done it. You've made your choice. Now all there is to do is wait.
...and 5 minutes later your food's ready.
The food:
I ordered Mapo Tofu with white rice. I'm a big meat eater, so why would I order Mapo Tofu? Because it's crazy delicious--that's why. It's also easy to mess up, and a lot of Los Angeles Chinese cafes are guilty of serving poor excuses. The Mapo Tofu here wasn't the best I've had ever, but it's the best I've had in Chicagoland, which is a big deal since I've been to a few decent restaurants in Chinatown and on Argyle. The portion is quite large (check out the photo I uploaded) and was enough to fill my big appetite for 2 meals. The tofu wasn't overcooked (it stilled retained its integrity when you picked it up with chopsticks) and the spice level of the sauce was perfect. The white rice was cooked perfectly, but that's to be expected. At $9, this was a STEAL.
The service:
It was takeout! But I still had an exceptionally good experience given the circumstances. The lady made me want to turn into a regular.
TL;DR. Tiny place. Mapo Tofu very good. VERY big portion -- well-worth your money. Come back soon.
Wilmette has a hole in the wall Chinese restaurant? If it weren't for Yelp, I never would have found this place. Â The food is decent, the prices reasonable, and the service friendly. Â I don't expect much from Chinese takeout, so my medium standards combined with Wah Mei's super convenient location (across from the El) make it a win. Â They close at 8:30 so you can't get late night take out here. Â This is the North Shore after all.
Review Source:Gave this a place a try today based on the Yelp reviews and honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. Â It's rare to randomly pick a Chinese take out place and get good food but that was definitely the case with Wah Mei.
It's teeny tiny with only 2 tables for eating in. Â Definitely just run in for pick up or have it delivered. Â
The women working the front were super sweet. Â Â
I had 5 kids to feed and they requested orange chicken. Â I openly mock orange chicken because (in addition to beef and broccoli) it is what most white people and/or children order when they go get Chinese take out... and most orange chicken is subpar. Â However, this rendition was GOOD. Â We also had rice noodles and chicken and beef and tofu. Â The tofu was my favorite of the dishes.
If I find myself in Evanston again, I wouldn't hesitate to order from Wah Mei!
Best Take Out in the area. Â For over a year after moving to Wilmette, we were still driving to the Pine Yard in Evanston when we craved Chinese food. Â Then we finally tried Wah Mei... it's even better. Â Best Mongolian Beef. Â General Chicken is most like the standard orange chicken, but it's better because they add veggies. Â Fast and Friendly. Â The people there are super super nice.
Review Source:Wah Mei is take out only, right across the street from the end of the line purple el station.
My family has been ordering take out here for as long as I can remember! It's three blocks from our house. It's our comfort food. I love the chop suey but everything I've had has been good!
They are quick, reliable and flat out good. I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for my order.
Quality. Â A "small" is plenty for a large meal even if you have a bottomless pit like I do and runs from 6-8 bucks. Â A large is plenty for two people and is around 9-12 bucks. Â I've tried about 10 different things now and liked them all, but the orange chicken and sesame chicken are spectacular. Â Not an eat-in place but I think they do delivery now as well.
Review Source:So I have now been here many times. This is by far not the first time.
For takeout food, there is none faster/closer for me anyhow. I'm going to scan the menu and put it up shortly. Basically most "dinner" dishes run from about 7$ range (egg foo young), to like 9 to 10$ (shrimp, etc)
Any place that can make the food with 15-20 minutes of order shows they're moving fast. Food has been reliable and good.
