While strolling around downtown Springfield in the afternoon or evening, you might never suspect that one of the best hamburgers in town is just around the corner.
The restaurant itself is no bigger than the average public bathroom and it's hard to step back far enough to read the whole menu (which is displayed on a chalkboard). Deciding what to get is relatively easy, especially when  their special includes two cheeseburgers (comes with mustard, ketchup, onions, and pickles), a bag of chips and a drink for only $4.60.
After ordering, you have two options: Sit inside or sit outside. For some of us, it's sometimes hard to leave the comfort of air conditioning, but do yourself a favor and head outside to sit. For one, it's going to be just as hot inside especially with the grill about ten feet away.
Once your burgers arrive, attack them slowly. These little guys are coming right off the grill and will burn your tongue off if you're not careful. It might also be a good idea to be armed with a stack of napkins, as these succulent sliders have a knack of being a little messy. Once you've devoured your first one, the best part is that you still have one more left in the bag.
Whenever I'm downtown I always think, "Do I have time to stop at Whisler's?"
Literally a hole in the wall, their space is just barely wide enough to lay down in (not that you'd ever want to do that).
Get a few of their mini burgers and onion rings then wash them down with a vanilla milk shake.
No frills, but good greasy food.
They're open late on the weekends.
In the past few months they've opened an upstairs dining area. This makes it even better. After a long night downtown you can get out of the cold and have a bite while you sober up for the drive home.
So I have never amended a review...or written an update...but I feel like I should clarify the difference between Whisler's daytime and Whisler's nighttime.
Daytime (or still daylight outside): Staff is a couple of scraggly, gruff women (see the Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia if you need a reference) that are rude and short-tempered and have zero interest in their customers. No pleasantries and no manners. Burgers are still cheap, greasy, and good.
Nighttime: Staff appears to be low-key college kids who are accustomed to drunk hungry folks. Burgers seem to be extra tasty after dark. :)
I agree with the reviewer who said that if she was downtown, she would eat there...but not make a special trip.
Good little burgers, but they are tiny. Â I didn't really know that before ordering so I only got two and they were both pretty good. Â I also got a milkshake that was delicious as well. Â The only downside is there is no where really to eat inside. Â You could eat at one of the small tables inside, but then you are stuck staring at people's lower halves as you are eating. Â So I opted to eat in my car instead, which can be good or bad depending on if you like the smell of lingering burger goodness when you get back into your car later that day.
Review Source:I've eaten here several times, and found it to be a really great little burger place. It is very conveniently located near the downtown bus transfer station, making it a great place to eat between bus rides. (Since bus transfer tickets are good for 90 minutes from the time issued, there is ample time to take a half-hour break and grab some burgers before getting on your next bus.)
This is not a fast food or frozen burger joint: your burgers are cooked to order on the grill right behind the counter as soon as you order them, so be sure you're patient enough to wait five minutes or so for the food. But the wait is by no means excessive for what you get.
The burgers are "sliders", about half the size of a "traditional" burger (though considerably larger than White Castle's sliders) so you will want to order at least two. They have economical "meal deals" consisting of two burgers, a bag of chips, and a drink (they're apparently not set up to make french fries), or you can order a bag of five burgers at a slight savings over individual cost.
There are several varieties of burger on offer, including regular hamburgers, cheeseburgers, additions of bacon and/or ham, turkey burgers, and vegetarian. I've only tried the ordinary and cheeseburgers, and found them to be extremely delicious.
They also make shakes, which I haven't tried, and have a selection of bottled drinks and ice cream bars.
There are only a couple of tables indoors and out--Whislers seems to be first and foremost a take-out shop. There is also an accessible wifi hotspot, though provided by someone nearby rather than Whislers itself.
If you're looking for some cheap, good, and quick non-fast-food burgers, Whisler's is where you want to be.
