I feel like I can give a unique perspective here. When I lived in Louisville as a kid, I used to come here all the time, get a big burger, and a cookie to go, and had really fond memories of the place. So on a recent trip to Louisville, I decided to pop in for lunch, and I wasn't disappointed.
The place looks, feels, is a carbon copy of what it was 20 years ago ... a simple burger joint with a patio-like decor that serves sandwiches, a get-your-own-drink area, a huge toppings bar, and a bakery with awesome cookies and baked goods. The fact it hasn't changed though is very much to its benefit.
I got the half-pound burger with onion rings. It was ready within a couple of minutes, as they keep a few toasted buns made and cook the burger to order. The burger itself was tasty, but it's the bun that makes this. If you've ever had a Fuddrucker's burger, you have an idea for how it tastes ... soft bakery style with a toasted bottom that has a little bit of crunch, and keeps the bun from getting mushy at all. This is better than that in my opinion.
The toppings bar has a nice mix of both toppings across single items (multiple types of onions and lettuce for example), sauces, and both whole and chopped items. They advertise 40 items in all, and it probably ends up being maybe 25 different ones, but nonetheless it's really impressive. Outside of cheese sauce and maybe diced tomatoes, I can't think of anything it's missing.
The onion rings were big, steakhouse style, and were solid. The side items here just fill you up, as long as they're good, the burgers are the reason you come here, no doubt.
The cookies? They absolutely melt in your mouth, and it's the only place that I know that has a Reese's Pieces cookie. My only regret here? I left them with my parents in Northern Kentucky by accident, they never made it back to Ohio! Doh!
Anyways, it was worth the trip, the price was good ($9), and they do the one thing they set out to do very well ... no different than they did all those years ago.
I Â can't believe this place exists! It is so good! I ordered my burger and they put in front of me within 30 seconds! Â I loaded my burger with so much from the burger bar and was stuffed afterwards!
The restaurant smells like cookies baking in the oven! Â They have a bakery within the restaurant where you can buy treats like derby pies and many types of cookies!
Such a good idea! Love it!
Build your own burger joint. If you like options on top of juicy and delicious beef cooked to your specification, W W Cousins is for you. It's definitely a good burger, and if you don't like it, you have no one to blame but yourself. Who mixed ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, jalapeños, horseradish, and black olives on your burger? You did. No mushrooms are available which is odd... I want mushrooms.
The ambience is deli-styled booths and wooden back chairs with a man-crafted tree in the center of the Restaurant. My favorite part is the guy who calls you up when your beef is cooked and buns are toasted. He's got one of those "Lllllllet's Get Readyyyyy to Ruuumblllllllllle" voices going on. Makes me excited to get my food!
It gets 3.5 stars (I round down) from me only bc I'm not a huge fan of topping-bars because people are gross and be all up touchin' my food 'n stuff. I prefer my toppings to be handled by professionals is all. But it's by my office, so chances are you'll see me there once a week.
I don't eat a lot of burgers. Â But when I do, it better be a good one. Â WW Cousins does a fine job of that for me. Â Actually, if the the hubby had not urged me to try this place, I would have never given it a second thought. Â Looking from the outside (and inside), this place is just outdated and nondescript. Â But the burgers are really every bit as good as the hubby says it is. Â The patty is more wide than it is thick so there is sufficient "over hang" of meat over bun. Â But the patty is also just thick enough for you to order the perfect cooking temperature. Â I got mine done medium, with mushrooms and swiss. Â It was by far the best burger I have had. Â And the fries were really good! Â They are even better with mayonnaise....which is available at the toppings bar. Â mmmmmmmmm....juicy burger with crispy fries and full fat mayonnaise.....yummmm!
Review Source:New to L'Ville we were looking for a good burger joint. Â This is definitely NOT what we had in mind. Â From the reviews it seemed like a good idea, however the only thing that was good was the bread, which they bake in house. Â The atmosphere is old and the burgers are edible however extremely greasy.
Review Source:Not a big fan although I was hoping to love the place. I know it has been around for a long time and most people love it, but the two of us thought it was just ok. I think the problem was lack of flavor. Not sure if they forgot to season out burgers but they were extremely bland. It wasn't bad but wasn't great either. I prefer 5 guys even though they aren't locally owned.
Review Source:Went with my wife and daughter for dinner. Don't let the 80s-chain logo and decor fool you, this place is worth the visit.
It's counter service, but not in a fast-food way with a huge menu board. The counter is to the right once you enter, and you walk up to the registers one at a time (walking right past the beer chilling on ice.) The menu is limited to burgers and some other kinds of sandwiches, but it's after you order your sandwich that the fun begins.
The big selling point is the extensive toppings bar, which includes virtually every burger topping you could imagine (although bacon, cheese and grilled onions must be ordered with your burger.)
My wife and I both opted for the half-pound burger, while the kid had a grilled cheese. (Kids eat free on Mondays and Tuesdays after 4.) I went for fries, which were a slightly smaller cut than steak fries and dusted with seasoned salt, while my wife had a side salad.
WW Cousins makes their own sandwich buns in-house, and it shows. The buns are soft and delicious, and are made in the bakery area adjacent to the front door (more on that later.) My daughter's grilled cheese was made with a bun as well, and was one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever seen at a restaurant.
The burgers were delicious, particularly because they allow you to order your specific doneness when you order. I went for medium, which was perfectly cooked.
Dessert was a piece of pecan pie from the aforementioned bakery, while the wife and daughter each had a chocolate chip cookie.
Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
If a burger place and a salad bar had a baby, this is what it would grow up to be. Â If you love burgers, then you'll want to make a stop at WW Cousins. It's the best burger place in Louisville, maybe the best in Kentucky and any adjacent state.
It's simple enough, you order what size burger you want, along with cheese, and maybe some bacon, sauteed mushrooms, or onions. Â But then you get that nice, juicy burger, turn around, and there's a toppings bar. Â And there's toppings you'd never even thought about putting on a burger. Â Of course, there's your standard lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, ketchup, mustard, etc. Â But then you've got BBQ sauce, thousand island dressing, diced boiled egg, avocado, alfalfa sprouts, I mean, you could eat here for a month and never get the same dressing on your burger twice. Â And the burgers themselves are juicy, with JUST the right amount of greasiness.
And it's not just burgers; there's plenty of great side dishes from fries and onion rings to chili and cole slaw. Â And they've got some pretty nice desserts they make in-house, as well.
I don't go here that often (if I did, I'd probably weigh 400 lbs.), but I always enjoy it when I do. Â Actually, I haven't been back here in a couple of years; maybe it's time I change that the next time I go up to Louisville.
It's ok. Â The burgers are fine--better than drive-through, and the place is quick, but otherwise, non-descript. Â The sides aren't great. Â The mac and cheese tastes like its from a box. Â The onion rings look impressive, but are very greasy and all batter. Â The chili is mediocre. Â We would go ahead though, bc they are quick, and now that we have a baby . . . quick and baby-friendly are good. Â (However, I like Homerun burgers better, bc of their grilled onion toppngs).
Review Source:OK, so tempted to check out the rest of the menu, but when in Rome... The burger was great, I didn't regret my decision. The 'burger' bar allowed me to add what ever I wanted with no additional cost, a nice change of pace! If anyone asks me if I want to eat there again, my answer: YES!
Review Source:This place has the best burger I've ever eaten. Â EVER. Â And, I've eaten a lot of burgers. Â A lot!
And, it's amazing...there's nothing really special about it. Â It wasn't abnormally big, it didn't have any crazy toppings or anything really special to it...
It just tasted AMAZING! Â The taste of the burger, the glorious crunchy bacon on top and the bun...oh the sweet sweet bun. Â It all congealed together to make the tastiest burger I've ever had. Â
Well done, W W Cousins...well done! I nearly shed a tear with the sweet taste of your food.
- I didn't dig the fries though.
We stopped by today to celebrate a family milestone, and instantly fell in love with the place. It was probably a combination of the endless burger toppings, the indoor patio area, and the cookies being baked while we ate. Or, it could have been the burger juice that runs down your arms while you eat, or the roll of paper towels we destroyed during our lunch. WW, I don't know who your cousins are, but they make great skillet burgers, and keep those fries coming.
Review Source:objectively, it's probably not the best burger i've ever had. and it's probably not even the best meal i've ever had. Â and there are many burgers whose construction and execution will dazzle critics far more than this one.
but... it is my favorite burger of all time. Â it's the burger of my childhood. Â the burger of my adolescence. Â the burger of my young and later adulthood and the burger that i will always dream of when away from my blessed hometown.
this burger is your first kiss. Â this burger is your first football game. Â this burger is your first great read, your first great album.
this burger is what burgers are: Â comfort for the heart. salve for the soul. nourishment for the spirit.
this is my favorite burger of all time.
I have been going to Cousins since I was a baby. My dad grew up on the hamburgers and still to this day say they are the best burger he's ever eaten. Sometimes I think he only likes them due to the price. You do get great burgers for a reasonable price and you get unlimited choices for toppings at the toppings bar. While it's not my favorite place to eat, it is still good and holds fond family memories. Personally I have always loved the bakery section more than anything else. Eating smiley faced sugar cookies the size of your head always made the trip for me as a kid. They still do :)
Review Source:After ordering my medium rare burger at the counter, I perused the dozens and dozens of toppings at the burger bar. They have four different kinds of pickles, three kinds of lettuce, and more sauces than I could count. Let's just say that there's nothing you might want that they don't have. Â
I would have taken a picture of my wet, juicy, burger but I couldn't take my hands off of it for long enough to bother.
It's the Bone Zone of Burgers.
Our favorite burgers! The fresh cooked buns contribute a lot to the cooked to order burgers...adds a sweetness to them. The toppings are added in a buffet similar to Fuddruckers. The fries are steak type fries although not as thick. Very tasty.
After eating, you can splurge over at their bakery counter.
Always come back here when we visit since we've moved.
THE CUSTOMERS:
We had a total of two adults and one child that went to this restaurant.
THE LOCATION:
The location is on Breckenridge Lane right off the Watterson Expressway. Turning into the restaurant is not hard to do but because of the hospital traffic, that first light off Dutchmans Lane may slow you down.
FIRST IMPRESSION:
Looks clean from the outside. Nice looking restaurant. Walked in and smelled like a good burger place. It looked a little like Fuddruckers (if you have ever been there or heard of it).
THE SELECTION:
Menu seemed quite extensive but mainly focused around burgers. They did have salads though for the lighter fair. It actually had a small salad bar. I ordered the 1/2 pound burger and my wife ordered the 1/3 burger.
THE PRICE:
The price came out to be around $20 for the both of us. That is with the drinks and the tax so it was not too bad. Prices seem moderate for the area.
THE FOOD:
The food was very good. Â We loved the fact they had a "toppings" bar with so many create-your-own-burger options. I put so many toppings on mine, I really don't know what you would call my burger other than "stuffed". Â They had everything from Dusseldorf German Mustard to SweetNSour Sauce (and everything in between). They also had all the standard toppings for those not wanting to extend outside the box. It was very good though.
OVERALL:
This place is good for families. Good for kids and great for groups. They have fountain drink control which is good for people like me that get about 5 refills while I am there. Â I would recommend this place to any of my friends.
This place isn't as good as it used to be. Gone are the hanging slabs of beef  waiting to be ground up into your burger that Kenneth J. mentioned in his review. Sadly, I think their burgers tasted better back in the hanging slab days, but they are still fairly good, the buns are still made on-site and just as yeasty-good as ever and the place has the most extensive topping bar in Louisville, it has a decided run-down feel now.
