A perfectly decent place to meet a friend for a beer after work. Really interesting atmosphere - you almost feel like you're a) intruding on a formal community gathering, b) crashing a meeting of Unitarians, or c) mandated to check your skiis at the door and order a hot chocolate after shaking the snow off your hat. Check out photos of the architecture and perhaps you'll see what I mean. I really like the high beams and dark wood; it lends itself to a cozy ambiance. The bartenders are really sweet, and wear cool shoes, and will tell you where to buy them.
There aren't a whole lotta beers on tap - maybe 4 or 5? - but pitchers are cheap. Fun place to watch March Madness, since it's relatively quiet on weeknights and there's not a lot of yelling. That said, if you don't pump the jukebox full of quarters, it can get a little too quiet. Who wants to hang out in a silent bar...? Pool tables and ping pong make this place better than your average dive (that is, when people are actually playing), and there's plenty of space to sit if you just want to put your legs up and tilt your chair back.
It's cozy. I like it. Bring cash.
Ye Olde Hut hast mine olde heart.
Unassuming, ancient, boiling hearth, billiard table, ping to the pong... Â There's even a jukebox here to jam away your evening with friends or a loved one. Â The bartender Griff is my fave; he'll tell you straight up he can't make that fancy cocktail you were trying to order because you thought this was one of those hipster dives. Â Friendly, loves to laugh - that's what good 'tenders are made of.
Note - You can bring food inside to munch on; just expect to share it with the other patrons to keep them happy as you beat their arses in pool.
Also also note - They're cash only. Â Sometimes the ancient ATM machine breaks down, but there's a market down the street you can withdraw from. Â And BofA further further down the lonely dirt road that is College Ave. Â Don't fret.
The bartender was more interested in making out with her boyfriend/random guy than serving my friends and me. Even when we wanted to play table tennis she allowed the guy to respond "she'll be 5 or 6 minutes. 100% disappointed with the experience even though it seemed like a cool place initially.
