My three friends and I made plans Saturday evening to try out 3 Sisters Cafe the next morning. Â Best decision...ever...well, as far as dining out is concerned.
We were slow moving due to a late night out and arrived at the cafe around 10:50 AM. Â First impression; cute, quirky Victorian home in a quirky, vibrant neighborhood. Â We found parking quickly, which is always a plus, but did see people hanging out on the porch, so knew to expect a wait.
The hostess greeted us warmly and gave us an estimated wait time of 30 minutes. Â Wish I would've caught her name, but she was friendly and upbeat. Â She undoubtedly knew she was dealing with hungry, cold, and possibly hung-over people. Â The entry area is a bit tight, hey it is a Victorian, and drafty. Â Warm beverages were offered and easily accessible to those of us waiting. Â We four perused the menu and immediately decided we would have to order one of each, or make a blood-pact to come back again. Â We were seated, within the given time, and given waters by the hostess. Â
Our server, who is also the owner, greeted us immediately and offered more warm, toasty beverages. Â Now, I wish I could describe her personality, but I think in writing it would come out all wrong. Â Simply put, she is amazing. Â She made us feel as if we had known her forever and she was our favorite auntie. Â She used cute pet names, touched our shoulders, and just gave out the best vibes. Â Again, wish I could remember her name, but I will next time, because there will be a next time, oh yes, there will...
Decisions were made and the food arrived. Â I had the daily special; pork belly with a corn cake topped with cooked apples and maple syrup. Â Also, because I'm wild that way, I ordered a side of the calico hashbrowns. Â So, yeah, pork belly. Â There aren't enough hipster words to use for this delicacy. Â It is fantastic and you should hope they serve it again. Â The hashbrowns were yummy. Â They're a combination of white and sweet potatoes. Â Oh and the warm beverage was a cafe au lait, mmm mmm good! Â Other happy food orders at the table were another special, the root & chicken sausage hash with eggs and toast, and a DDD favorite, the D'Nai sandwich with tomato vegetable soup. Â We were happy, stuffed, warm-and-fuzzy feeling people, but still had one more item to order: the blueberry goat cheese pie!! Â Get it, eat it, love it. Â Unless you just can't stomach blueberries or that tangy goat-cheesiness, then you will enjoy it.
Bottom line: great service and food
We went on a Sunday morning and it was packed, but even so the wait was not long so don't let it discourage you. The menu is diverse and made with fresh ingredients. We loved it! I ordered an egg scramble and it was fantastic. The food came out quickly and we were very happy with the quality of the food. Highly recommend! I'll have to revisit a few more times to be sure but I'm positive this place will be a 5 star in my book here in the future.
Food: 5/5 - OMG! We saw someone ordered the breakfast burrito, HUGE!
Service: 5/5 - Our guy was super friendly
Location: 4/5 - It was freezing in there!!
My high hopes were quickly shot down when my sister and I encountered painfully slow service. Â It was 2 in the afternoon so we were one of the few tables in the whole place but it took forever to get drinks, forever for her to come back for our order, forever to get the check, and forever to get the change. Â I'm willing to wait forever if you are a friendly and attentive waitress but ours lacked a certain charm and knowledge. Â Bummer. Â The menu is great; lots of vegetarian and vegan options and a nice selection of teas and smoothies/juice. Â I feel in my heart of hearts that your best bet might be ordering breakfasty foods as the lunch choices we made where just meh. Â While good, the veggie club was bland and lacked "wow factor." Â I went out on a limb and had the carrot ginger soup as my side. I wasn't a huge fan but the veggie soup my sis had was quite good and had an extra kick to it. She also had the fish tacos but they were unlike any fish tacos I have ever seen. A huge piece of fried fish sits on your plate waiting for you to cut and assemble it upon your tacos. Weird. I like the random assortment of tables and chairs and the feeling of being in Granny's house. I would consider 3 Sisters again but would venture to guess that my best bet is for breakfast.
Review Source:Great meal, great service. This is a nice little place set in an old two story house in a nice area of Broad Ripple. The menu is Full of selections for any diet. I had the D'nai, a huge ham sandwich with kale and cheese, side of au jus. I had a side of the calico potatoes. The sandwich was a great taste combination. The potatoes were hash brown style and excellent. Â
We split an order of lemon corn cakes for a starter, this is like nothing I've ever had. Maybe a little over rated, but interesting.
This is a place worth returning. Reasonable prices, many items to choose from. Â My only downer was a the wait, but many good things are worth waiting for. We took home a piece of carrot cake, it was top notch.
The house was way cool, and the menu sounded great. But I am a tough critic for breakfast and I don't like eggs (as in omlets, scrambled, over easy, Benedict's, etc) so this place was just average for me. I am a devout DDD try-er, and this place just didn't live up to all the hype. I had the lemon berry corn cakes. They were just mediocre.
Review Source:We couldn't wait to eat at this place during our visit to Indy. Â We opted to sit outside to avoid the 45 min wait at 9:30am. Â We waited 10 min for water, another 10 for coffee and about 30 to place our order. Â The food came about 20 min later, but the pancakes came out cold. Â Despite the temp, the Raspberry Pancakes were very good. Â Service was downright horrible. Â The waitress had an attitude and didn't even brng us the check for another 25 min even though our plates were empty...we had to ask someone else for the check. Â Had I known the awful service - I would have grabbed the BGC pie to go and been happy.
Review Source:Decided to check out 3 Sisters today because of DDD on Food Network. Glad I saw the episode. Great little dive in Broad Ripple. All fresh and seasonal ingredients. Good for all types of diets! Â I chose the Lemon Corn cakes with Lemon Curd and Creme fresh. OUTSTANDING! When you first walk in you think this could go bad because it being a "Dive". Trust me it's not. Service was a tad slow, but don't let that discourage you. The food was amazing and well worth it. I will definitely return to try more.
Review Source:We came here with our two kids (6 and 2) on a rainy Sunday for brunch. There was no one waiting. We were told that they couldn't seat us for a half hour. Again, there was no one waiting, and at least one two-top was open that we could see. We felt discriminated against for bringing our kids. We won't be back.
Review Source:Wow, definitely worth the wait. Â
First of all, there is just someting to be said for crazy friendly people. Â The hostess, Â our waitress, the bus-girl- all incredibly nice people who left me feeling good. Â That alone will make me come back to 3 Sisters. Â
Second- the food I had was phenomenal. Â I ordered fish tacos and then my friend and I shared the blueberry goat cheese pie. Â The fish tacos delicious. Â I'm not typically a fan of deconstruction, but this worked. Â The spicy mayo was unbelievable. Â
The best, though, was definitely the pie. Â It was as close to heaven on a plate as I have ever had in my lfie.
My boyfriend's friend recommended this restaurant, and I am incredibly happy he did. We went early on a Sunday morning to get some breakfast, as we were told it's the best breakfast in town. 3 Sisters Cafe did not disappoint.
The atmosphere is delightful. I sat in a large viking-ish chair, and admired all of the quirky pieces of art the restaurant had to offer.
We split an order of the gingerbread pancakes which were incredible. I mean, I love pancakes. And these were perfect. I would recommend trying something seasonal when you go, cause these pancakes were definitely worth it.
I ordered the omelette of the day which included an assortment of veggies including squash, peppers, and onions. It was fantastic. No complaints over here.
My boyfriend got one of the Gretchen breakfast sandwich, and all of the ingredients tasted very fresh! Yummy :)
The only setback was that our meal, for whatever reason, took a bit longer than we had hoped. Everyone else seemed to get theirs in a reasonable time, but we noticed other tables getting their food before we did when they had come at least 10 minutes after us.
Over all, I'd definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a unique, delicious breakfast!
Went for lunch with family. Food was wonderful, many options for vegans. (Will try next time)
No room for dessert-(MUST try next time)
Service was slower than expected, but I think there were only 2.
No beverage refill offered though-why? Hostess seemed to have time to help out.
Oh well, I still recomend and I will be back.
What a wonderful little place. Great food, lots of healthy options, reasonably priced. Fresh fruit here means berries, mango, etc - not a bunch of bad melon. The place was also adorable, with lots of funky art on the walls. I got a build your own scramble and scarfed down - too tasty to savor it.
The only drawback is that the sound bounces something fierce, so everyone's conversations are your conversations. Still, 5 stars. Love it!
I love brunch, and this was a great place for it.  The atmosphere is that of  eating in a renovated old Victorian house with quirky wall-hangings and decor.  I can see how it can get crowded on a weekend, but it was perfect on a Thursday morning.  I had the Garden which was a 3 egg scramble with fresh veggies topped with goat cheese. I consumed every morsel of that amazing creation.  It tasted so fresh and home made!  The coffee was delicious, and the quirky waiter made the experience very fun and delightful. Definitely would go back.
Review Source:I don't know if this is going to be the greatest review because I didn't really get anything exciting to eat. Â And part of my review will be based on the person who I went to go eat with. Â We went to Three Sisters on a dreary rainy day. Â We walked inside to give our name to the host/hostess but no one was standing there. Â There were people sitting down so rather then crowding them, we stood back a bit. Â No host came up until conveniently two other people walked in from outside and got there name down before us so that kind of sucked but I'm over that.
I got the grilled cheese and had tomato put on it which was pretty good but also not that complicated of a sandwich. Â Maybe next time I'll get Kyle's Grilled Cheese with avocado too. Â As my side I chose the tomato vegetable soup which was meh. Â It kind of tasted like warm salsa. Â My friend got the Turkey Club which he said was quite good. Â It was a "big Mac" turkey club in that there were 3 pieces of bread involved with the making of the sandwich. Â It did look really good. Â If I ate club sandwiches, I probably would have asked to try it. Â
The service was good and the people were nice. Â I have been by in the morning to get a smoothie and there are always some really good dishes going by me as I wait so maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. Â I just wasn't wowed by this place today. Â But I wouldn't turn it down if someone else suggested it because I'd like to try some of the other items on the menu.
I sometimes feel redundant reviewing extremely popular and highly-rated joints, but I also feel badly about neglecting to sing my praises when I have a delicious meal. So, I'm probably not saying anything new here, but I'm saying it anyway!
Not sure how it took me so many years to visit 3 Sisters, but I'm so glad I finally did. On a Saturday at 10:30am (prime weekend brunching time), my party of 2 waited about 10 minutes for a table. I was expecting far worse. The restaurant is a repurposed old house that exudes warmth and friendliness. It's brightly colored and nothing matches, the hardwood floors are worn and nicked, and it's absolutely perfect the way it is.
My fiance and I had coffee, lemon corn cakes, a biscuits and lamb gravy concoction, and hash browns made from both regular and sweet potatoes (huge portions for all), and our bill barely broke $20. Our server was also one of the most charming, sweet people that I've ever encountered. You'll know immediately if you're lucky enough to be seated in her section.
If you're an Indy local, you have no excuse for not checking this place out immediately. We practically live in Kentucky (aka the Southport area), and despite the long drive for us, this will definitely added to our brunch rotation.
I am not sure how much value I am adding by giving a highly rated place a high rating... but here goes...
On one of our house hunting trips before heading back to St. Louis we stopped at the 3 Sisters Cafe. It looked so adorable from the outside... they had tables around the porch and I love the concept of eating in a house. The room we were in had 4 other tables the art work on the walls was whimsical and funny.
The portions are HUGEEEEEE we did not finish our food.... my hubby got the breakfast buritto (it was delish!), my mom got the lemon curd corncakes and I got eggs and toast with hashbrowns (sweet potato and regular potato) on the side. I am lactose intolerant (but can do yogurt and cheese) and was so happy that they had almond milk for my coffee yay I can put away the non-dairy creamer!
The burrito had great flavors to it, it wasnt bland; the lemon curd was perfectly tart and the hashbrowns tasted so good the sweet and savory combo actually worked.
We waddled out of this place (so stuffed!) with a feeling that Indy will be a great place for foodies like us!
So a few months ago I went vegetarian... mostly. and I had to check this place out while I was with myself and nobody felt I was trying to indoctrinate them into my new beliefs or some crap. I wanted to try the best vegan options out and decide for myself.
This was a great place to start but I will say that guy on FoodTV did them a disservice by mentioning everything with meat.
The soup was good, the sandwich was even better, the desert was so damn rich I am still digesting it.
Every town has one of these places. It's always in a big funky old house, with bad art on the walls, it's always really slow and the food has that sorta slopped-together feel. Not BAD, but certainty not good. And for some reason these places are always crowded. Why? I have no idea.
3 sisters was typical of these places. Staff was harried but friendly, food ingredients were decent & appeared reasonably fresh but presentation was truck stop quality (burned eggs, untoasted toast, etc). If your main criteria for food is large portions you'll love 3 sisters. My single pancake was the size of a hub cap.
Bottom line: not for foodies but could be worse.
The reviews are great! They suck you right in. Â The little charming house on the corner is so sweet....you get excited just pulling up to park! Â The tables with mismatched chairs are all very enticing and then...you wait. and wait. Â and wait. Â What is going on? Â Thanks for the water?
My girlfriends and I went to entice our tastebuds yesterday and were basically ignored from the time we came in. Â We came in two waves and the opportunity presented itself on several occasions to stop and see how we were doing and yet, NO ONE did. Â It was so bizarre, b/c we were the closest table to the kitchen/bakery area where the wait staff was CONSTANTLY coming and going.
We waited nearly 25 minutes to even get our drink orders in and when the woman came by, she was "sorry" but did little to ensure the rest of our meal was well served. Â It was extraordinarily disappointing. Â I was shocked, as the reviews would indicate otherwise.
So, let's just say that despite the food being really good (but also EXTREMELY slow to exit the kitchen - with one of five meals being served nearly 10 minutes before everyone else's), there is no reason to go here. Â I cannot continue to enjoy an establishment that doesn't care about the basics of customer care.
I will say if you are PATIENT, the food is good. Â However, there was an overall bitterness to our entire experience. Â It's sad b/c it would otherwise have been a perfect lunch with my out of town friends.
I've been walking past this place for years and hearing all good things, so finally this afternoon I went to lunch here with a cousin of mine. What can I say?! It's great! Not only is the food great but the atmosphere is charming and delightful. I love the little tables outside and I really enjoyed the inside of this old house. They definitely created a perfect vibe for a breakfast lunch joint.
I ordered a chicken tostada salad which was the special of the day and my cousin ordered the eggplant sandwich with homemade applesauce. I appreciate a place who creates different menu items each day and does creative sides like homemade applesauce. Our server took care of us very well and made sure we were comfy and had everything we need.
My salad was good. Nothing amazing and outlasting for my palette but I will keep trying different things because it was my first time  and all. The chicken was well seasoned, it just had too much cheese and was a little greasy for me. The peppers and onions though were nicely seasoned and tasted well with the spring greens that came with it. My cousin enjoyed her eggplant sandwich and especially loved the applesauce and kept complimenting about it. We did ordered the blueberry goat cheese pie that I have heard so much about and it was great. It was very different but it a wonderful way. I loved the toasted almonds on top with the drizzles of honey and fresh dollop of cream. I'm a pie baker so when I say it is good, it is. Take my word.
I will be going back and think I will try some breakfast items as I love anything and everything breakfast! This is a place to bring your friends, spouse, whoever, and just enjoy the cozy atmosphere and have great conversations!!
I fear my review isn't going to say much more than what other reviewers have said:
Delicious food, high quality ingredients, diverse menu, amazing vegan and vegetarian options.
Two in our party got breakfast items -- the burrito was huge and quickly devoured.
I had the grilled eggplant sandwich with the soup of the day -- both excellent.
Highly recommended.
I have heard about 3 Sisters for years and finally made it over to try it out. It met all the expectations I had formed! I had the grilled eggplant sandwich with goat cheese and spinach along with the chili. Their salad selection was unbelievable, amazing looking desserts, and their vegan menu is incredible. I am not vegetarian or vegan but I would have been thrilled with any of the veg dishes.
We ate outside on the "porch" and had a lovely lunch. Thanks, 3 Sisters, glad I finally got to try you out! Won't be my last visit!
The juicy, savory D'nai, featured on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives, was a delicious choice, as was the portobello burger. Awesome selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes while embracing the carnivore, this hidden gem in Broad Ripple is easy to miss. I haven't been here since it was the Village Idiot in high school (early 90s), but I'm glad I made the trip back. Topping it all off was the chocolate bacon pie. Ridiculous. Service was friendly but not stupendous (had to ask for refills, seemed a little rattled despite our 8:30pm arrival with few other customers in her section and still 3 servers on duty), thus the 4-star rating. Nonetheless, I'll be coming back to try many of the other wonderful sounding items on the lengthy menu.
Review Source:Everything on the menu is fresh and fabulous. Delicious salads, sandwiches, breakfast food, tea, etc. Every time I go here I am tempted to get the Mediterranean Chicken Salad because it is the best salad I have ever had. I really want to try more of the salads, but this one is too good to turn down.
You must try this place...unless you are one of those really picky eaters who only likes boring, simple food.
I just wish this place served beer and wine.
If Alice had wandered into that cottage from Hansel and Gretel, yet still managed to stop in the garden to have tea, thus would be 3 Sisters Cafe- only without the whole cannibalism or decapitation thing. Suffice it to say that this is the most pleasant location to which you can bring your friends and, permitting, children for breakfast in all of Broad Ripple Village. The goat cheese pie, festively decorated and sweetened with fresh berries of blue, will have you falling in love with this place faster than a crazy, old cat lady at a, um, cat...store? Anyway, complementing the meal with some fluffy whipping cream and a light mimosa will ensure an experience that retains its sweetness like the memory of your favorite fairy tale.
Review Source:I don't have an aunt with a house like 3 Sisters Cafe, but for some reason I can't help but feel like I'm visiting some tender-hearted aunt who has china, cats and tea parties every time I walk into this cozy little Broad Ripple cottage. Ms.Honey of Matilda, would totally set up camp here.
In addition to being cute as a button, 3 Sisters is a perfect place for my veggie loving self to have a hay day. I typically order a veggie/cheese ridden omelet or the soup of the day. On this particular visit, I was on a mission. The chalkboard reading "Goat cheese blueberry pie" in the front yard was calling my name. I'm sure of it. I love fruit in my dessert. I love goat cheese. Who told the piemeister to make a pie with both just for me? These blueberries didn't come from a can or a frozen bag. I'd like to picture a blueberry field in the backyard of the cafe in which the baker stepped 5 feet, picked the berries and threw them directly into the pie - because that's what it tasted like.
I'll be back to visit my cat-loving, tea party aunt very soon.
Went here after seeing Diners Drive Ins & Dives...what can I say, I'm a sucker for Guy and his antics and want to try what he eats when we pass through some of these cities :)
Had the D'nai sandwich from the show with Ham, Jack Cheese & Kale on a big hoagie roll with dipping sauce that was pretty good. Reminded me of an italian beef sandwich from Chicago, which is weird b/c the ham looked and tasted more like Italian Beef than ham. I liked my sandwich,
My wife had the 5 grains sloppy joe sandwich and didnt care for it too much. Maybe she got too healthy of a dish though, although it was a recommended highlighted item on the menu.
Love the atmosphere here, this home setting is really a nice touch. The staff was great and the location was in a really cute neighborhood atmosphere in Indy.
My parents were in town visiting a couple weekends ago, and we stumbled upon 3 Sisters by accident as we were looking for a place to park in Broad Ripple. Â Right away we could tell that the place was special. Â As we were waiting for a seat, my mom started chatting with the people in front of us-- another mom and dad who were meeting their daughter's boyfriend for the first time over brunch. Â "You'll love it here," the mother assured us. Â "The people and the food -- it's all very warm and comforting." Â
We were seated in a room with hardwood floors, big windows, and lots of light. Â We immediately began marveling at the menu. Â Nearly everything on it sounds delicious-- so many simple, fresh ingredients in such unique, flavorful combinations. Â It took a good ten minutes for us to scour the menu and decide upon a main dish. Â
For the most part, the food tasted as good as it sounded. Â My parents ordered cappuccinos and found them to be pretty good, if too sweet for their tastes. Â My own chai latte was pretty heavy on the honey, though I kind of liked it that way. Â My mom got the Vince salad and enjoyed it quite a bit, and my dad loved the 3 Sisters sandwich. Â I ordered the lemon corncakes and thought they were good, but not exceptional. Â The berry sauce was delicious, though. Â
The service staff was very nice, but there were a couple of issues that detracted from our experience. Â About 20 minutes after we ordered, the server came by to let my mother know that they were out of mango-- a key ingredient in her salad. Â She was a little bit bummed, but the server was very accommodating in making a substitution. Â The food took a little while to come out. Â When it finally did, I was told that they were making more fresh whipped cream (for the lemon corncakes) and that it would be ready shortly. Â It finally arrived about fifteen minutes later, when I only had one corncake left. Â Again, not really a dealbreaker, but slightly disappointing. Â
Despite the hiccups, I look forward to returning to try the other promising items on the menu. Â I would definitely recommend 3 Sisters to others.
You just can't go wrong at 3 Sisters. You can breakfast anytime, the vegetarian menu is enticing and for us meat eaters they don't let us down! I love that their menu is extensive yet not too huge. I've been here several times and it is always fresh goodness!
Whenever you go there remember to always order the Calico Hashbrowns. Who knew that adding some sweet potatoes to hashbrowns could be so good? Well the women of 3 Sisters sure did!
Where have I been living? Under a rock? I guess so. I had never heard of 3 Sisters until my friends wanted to go last week. I'll blame that on cancelling cable (not seeing the DDD episode) and vodka, my sweet arch-nemesis. We arrived at noon, and I was ready to party on with some lunch items.
So I'm doing a new way of eating right now, and carbs from the bakery, or bread on the crazy sandwiches don't really fit into that. I ordered the salmon salad, expecting shredded salmon on top of some basic greens. Boy, was I wrong.
I received a MASSIVE HUNKA HUNKA SALMON on top of spring greens, micro-greens, tossed with chopped cucumbers, giant hunks of tomato, and a glorious dollop of goat cheese. Paired with a lemon vinaigrette, this was an outstanding and refreshing salad. I actually got full from the salad, and didn't want to walk back home. Congrats, 3 Sisters.
To end, I will quote the immortal words of Elaine Benes, "IT'S A BIG SALAD!"
Overall an excellent place to eat...innovative food offerings...excellent ingredients...reasonably (although not cheap) pricing....charming atmosphere.
The folks that own and work here are very nice...offering suggestions which is always nice...
The ONLY thing....jeeeeze.....build up some support for the floors ! Â The damn table shake like a 7.2 earthquake anytime there is someone walking across them...which is irritating as heck !
Awesome food. I've been here a couple of times. You can't beat the breakfast. It's located in a cool part of Indy, Broad Ripple where there is a fair amount of cool things to do.
I've had the mushroom, avocado and swiss omelette which is fantastic. Their salads are enormous.
The staff is very friendly. Whenever I'm in Indy I try to make it out here. Definitely recommended!
We were told there would be a 25 minute wait. Â It ended up being 40, but that was OK - it was a pleasant day, and the other people waiting were genial. Â By the time we were seated (11 a.m. or so on a Sunday), the place had almsot cleared out. Â
We sat at the table for about 10 minutes before being approached by a server. Â She wanted to merely take our drink order, but we pretty much forced her to take our entire order right then. Â That is the last time we saw her until she delivered our check. Â We ate our entire meal while the couple at the table next to ours waited to place their order! Â It was ridiculous.
That being said, the rest of the waitstaff  was very friendly and helpful, and our food came out really quickly after we finally were able to order.  The food is quite good -- many, many items on the menu sounded tasty, so it was difficult to choose.  The restaurant itself is rather charming.
After reading reviews about this place, we knew it was going to be busy for Sunday brunch. We got here at 10:30 and were told that there would be an hour wait for a table for 4. Expecting the long wait, we were fine waiting and the hostess was very pleasant. We were finally seated around 11:15 and the server was no where to be seen.
We waited for a bit to get waters and coffees. The server we had was cold and inattentive. Another server consistently came by with water and coffee refills, even though our server almost on purpose avoided our table. We waited for almost an hour to get our food and by the time it arrived, it was cold. The first two plates arrived, then after about 5 minutes the next two did. The server had forgotten some other items we ordered, so that was another 5 minutes.
The potatoes for one of the dishes was undercooked and another omelet had raw egg yolks on the plate. When we notified the server of this, she replied with "ok..." and did not apologize or attempt to reconcile the situation. Finally, my friend asked for another omelet. It was brought out almost instantly and it was hot.
Overall, the food was good. I had the lemon corn cakes and those are definitely worth the trip. I was expecting more from a place with an hour wait, because obviously people like to the food here.
I don't know if we'll ever come here again, but future patrons beware of long waits for seats, food, and some unfriendly staff.
