My buddy and I had breakfast at Alps West last Sunday. They do have a free parking lot behind the restaurant but it does fill up quickly. The restaurant also fills up, but there seemed to be a good flow of diners coming in and out so there never seemed to be a long line. There is a small foyer with bench seating and a pleasing Alpine scene on the wall if there is a line. We each ordered a breakfast special platter with eggs, hash brown potatoes, French toast and choice of meat. It was a filling breakfast though a bit on the bland side. Our waitress was attentive to our needs. They have good weekday morning specials if you live in the area.
Review Source:If you are looking for a fantastic diner for breakfast, you've found it. Â I have liked everything I've ordered here and I've been here at least 20 times! Â My only complaint is that I had other breakfast diners that I used to like, but now I consider poor in comparison to ALPS.
I'm a big fan of the Texas Omelette.
Free parking in the back! Breakfast place all day. Order the french toast- fluffy and tasty!!!! Great seating area, but only downfall is that the t.v. is just too in your face. I feel if you want to watch t.v. while you eat, stat at home and eat on your couch. The food was tasty, I have had better but the service was great. Very attentive and run by family, so they treat you the way the way they would want to be treated. Coffee keeps filled to the rim!
Review Source:I have been to many breakfast diners in this city and I have not been able to settle down into one since I have been grieving the loss of Huck Finn. Â Huck Finn is still around, but their service, quality of food, and drunken obnoxious crowds have prevented me from making any return visits.
ALPS was very clean, the waitress was the nicest and genuinely friendliest waitress I have met in a very long time. Â After little to no sleep from the night before I arrived here on a Friday morning (sober) and had no problems getting a table. Â The food came super fast and was tasty. Â Two of my friends ordered the skillets, both were excellent and I ordered the Big Man breakfast which was substantial and delicious.
It is a little out of the way for me since I live on the southside, but once I relocate further north, this will definitely become one of my go-to breakfast diners.
Brought the Goddaughter and her mom here one fine Saturday morning. Â There were alot of other kids in the place. Â I like to spoil the little one, so I let her order whatever she wanted on the menu, knowing that I would finish whatever she didn't want :)
Great location for me. Â Quick service. Â Reasonable prices. Â I got a skillet with a side of pancakes. Â Love the portions.
ALPS is a solid, breakfast oriented diner. The food was ok, good but not exciting. I had the biscuits and gravy with sausage patties. It was a decent portion and tasted alright. They could have been a bit more generous with the gravy, but all in all it was A-OK.
Christopher had a combination with eggs and sausage and potatoes and pancakes. He ate it up but wasn't overly impressed with it. One thing to note is the sausage patties have a very strong flavor. It was fine for us, but my Mom could not have eaten it.
The restaurant itself, is large, airy and clean. For a neighborhood spot, it is convenient and not bad at all.
Good food and service but for breakfast it's a bit pricey. Paid $29 for a 2 breakfasts (one waffle and one pancake) a side of bacon, a side of sausage, glass of milk and one cup of coffee. with the tip $35.00. I thought it was a bit steep for what we had.
food - 4.5 stars
service - 4.5 stars
value - 1.5 stars
I don't know why I haven't gotten on here about Alps. Â We get breakfast from them with great frequency, the hubs more often than me, and occasionally lunch. Â Super nice folks, the ladies who wait tables are always nice and friendly, the food is good. Â It's a little pricier than I expected but the portion sizes are pretty big. Â I do wish they'd let me order off the kids menu for a smaller portion, but alas, not allowed.
I do always ask for a little more chocolate in their chocolate milk, their bacon is on the thin side but decent, waffles and pancakes and french toast are all good.
All in all, a decent diner spot in a neighborhood so lacking in diner spots.
It's not often that I give breakfast joints five stars, but this place is truly the best. You know why? Because pancakes come with EVERYTHING! Well, maybe not everything, but close to everything.
For example, when I ordered a bacon and cheese omelet, I had the choice of getting it with toast or pancakes -- at no extra charge! Most breakfast places don't offer pancakes when you order an omelet. That was definitely a plus. I also liked how fluffy my omelet was, and the pancakes (as you would expect from a pancake house) were delicious.
I suppose one negative was that our server was loud and abrasive. She just didn't have that sweet folksy demeanor that you would expect from a waitress at a diner. The food came out fast, though, and, like I said, it was delicious, so I'm still giving this place five stars.
We will be back for sure!
NOTE: While there is paid parking on the street in front of Alps, there's a free parking lot around back for restaurant customers.
This place is consistent. Â Love coming here in the summer for brunch with our dog. Â They are very accommodating on the patio, and they always bring her a bowl of water and a milkbone (which she's allergic to, but it's still really sweet).
I almost always get a veggie omelet. Â Â Nice and fluffly, and I find the veggies to taste really fresh. Â Side of pancakes are not amazing, but they're definitely good. Â
I've always had friendly, fast service here.
To new traditions, old friends. Â Looks like this is gonna be a family breakfast spot for pitter patter of feet. Â Whoa, slow down! Â Not us yet! But, I did accompany my friend and her kids, and the place is very kid friendly. Â Enlarged booths, patient staff, coloring books and crayons. Â I think the only thing left for the parents to ask for is a babysitter, and everyone is set.
Service is quick and out waitress set out our platters in record time for the hungry munchkins. Â On the our breakfast menu: Butter, pancakes, bacon, butter, mushroom and tomato omelet, butter, fresh orange juice, butter, coffee, butter, and fruit garnish. Â Omelet was juicy yet fluffy and huge serving size!
Oh yes, and parking lot around the corner in the back for your mini vans.
My family has been going to the Alps for years. Â I work about a mile away, and we go frequently. Â The Alps is like a family. Â It's sort of the meeting place if you do business in the Elston Corridor. Â It's really the only place to go for breakfast/lunch in the area, and it's quite good.
The breakfast is your classic, no frills, but really tasty stuff like eggs, pancakes, hash browns. Â The coffee is excellent. Â The service is excellent. Â The waitresses and busboys here have character, and if you are a repeat customer, they quickly get to know you, and you quickly get to know them, by name.
Bob, his son Ted, his wife, and his daughter, are all wonderful people and extremely service oriented. Â If he can help it, you will not leave here unhappy. Â It's refreshing to go to a nice diner in a rather empty/restaurant-less area, although there's a new dinner spot (Bread&Wine) just down the block.
Great, overall!
Good diner option for the Old Irving neighborhood. Cleaner than the Golden Nugget chains this place seems to be a neighborhood favorite. I definitely need to give this place a second chance given that I didn't even select a meal based on the restaurant namesake. I was trying to be healthy and ordered the lox platter. Probably not the wisest choice as the salmon was just okay and a little stringy. I probably should have gone with pancakes. Service and seating was prompt and friendly. Next time I go back I'll have to make sure I'm not double booked for eating invitations.
Review Source:Here are a few convenient positions to use while eating at this magnificent, deceptively European pancake house and diner.
Position One: THE NOM-NOM ATTACK
After you get your food, prepare your arsenal of culinary cutlery in your hands and dig into that skillet. Â Left hook, slice. Right jab, scoop. Left hook, stuff. Right jab, sip. Â Continue until your breakfast enemy is nothing but a stain on the plate.
Position Two: THE SIP-SIP STARE DOWN
If you are at ALPS to look at the non-existent mountains, take a break with a coffee and newspaper. Â Try and stay calm as the raging caffeine courses through your veins. Â Unbeknownst to you, this coffee-drinking ritual is a test of wills. Â Which will come first, the check, or your sanity?
Position Three: THE NEGOTIATOR
Diners, drive-ins and dives got you coo-coo for hot cocoa? Â Don't know what I'm talking about? It's because those sneaky waitresses have their own code, lingo, razzle-dazzle sheesh boom bah. Â Did you order a triple decker omelette, hold the italian, double-Sparten with extra hashies? Maybe whatever that was will taste good with your hunka-hunka O.J. freshly squeezed. Â Nod and smile, negotiator, nod and smile.
These tips and tricks are sure to net you a wonderful time at ALPS West Restaurant & Pancake house. Â Auf wiedersehen diner-seeker, and enjoy!
I know I've said this before, but seriously, who isn't a sucker for a good diner? ALPS is probably one of the best diners I've been to the city thus far, and I secretly love it because it makes me feel like I am back home in the burbs (ya, I'm a dork).
I was told it gets prettyyy busy on Sunday mornings, so our party of 3 ventured out a little early to get a table. Luckily, we were seated right away and our orders were taken soon after. They have really great service, and the food is fabulous. I absolutely love any type of skillet, so I went with the Gypsy--ham, cheddar cheese, bell peppers, and onions all on a bed of hash browns, and 2 eggs over-easy to top it off. Holy yum. Highly recommended.
They also serve lunch and dinner, and seem to have really great specials. I would come back to check those out, too. ALPS is awesome.
I work pretty far from home so I never eat at the places near my house for lunch. Â I happened to have a Doctor appointment a few weeks ago so I worked from home. Â Hungry and unable to muster up the strength to actually cook for myself, I went to Alps. Â
OMG!!! Â I talk it back! Â You aren't under seasoned! Â You are amazing! Â I ordered a chicken sandwich. Â Well, it come with a soup. Â Whenever someone says that to me I immediately think "oh... Â yay.. Â a filler..." Â No! Â This soup was so good, amazing, magical even! Â I got the a vegetable soup. Â I was using the amazing selection of breads they gave me to sop up every last bit of that soup. Â A few minutes later my meal came. Â The chicken on my sandwich was an actual whole chicken breast either pounded or cut thin... Â it was twice the size of the bun. Â It had bacon and mushrooms and cheese on it! Â Three of my favorite things! Â I barely at from the mountain of fries on my plate because the soup had already filled me up and the sandwich was too good to leave any of it. Â
I love you Alps! Â I'll be back for lunch as soon as I can. Â Maybe I should just go for dinner... Mmmm... that sounds like a good idea!
This place is great, a nice clean hopping diner but in a real neighborhood where the locals actually eat there on Sunday morning!
Service was great had ice waters and coffee within moments of sitting down. Hubby tried the Irish skillet, it was huge and had big chunks of real corned beef in it, not bits of corned beef like substance that you find at some other breakfast places!
I tried the ladies sampler, it was all standard fare but cooked well, the pancakes were delicious, just one step under Ihop. Say what you will about Ihop but they know their pancakes!
All in all a great experience and solid food! I love the fact that some of the breakfast specials actually come with orange juice, I have never seen that before!
I entered ALPS in perhaps the ideal circumstances. I was starving and slightly hungover. Although at an intersection plagued with scrappy storefronts, this is a clean family restaurant. I sat outside as the weather called for it but also a lingering hangover and anyone's kids is not how to set up for a good dining experience.
The staff is friendly and perhaps too busy to get to the tables swiftly. Once my order was in it came back about 10-15 minutes which on a busy Sunday morning is nuts. I went eggs, but could have, should have, and will some day get the pancakes.
If you're looking for a solid family/Greek style restaurant that has reasonable prices and expected wait time, come here. If you're looking to hit a gourmet palace of pancakes and glazes, google hipster food.
Will l return? It's likely, how could you not want to try the pancakes at a pancake house?
Fluffiest Egg White omelet around. Really? Yes really!
Most of the breakfast joints around Albany Park/Irving Park are diner dives. Tons of butter, lots of grease, (great for a hangover) but just not healthy. This is not true about the ALPS.
The owners are sweet, the waitstaff has sass, and there is generally no longer than a 10 minute wait on Saturday or Sunday.
No extra charge to sub fruit for hash browns, although an egg-white omelet does tend to run quite a bit extra. 2 coffee's, 2 egg-white omelets = $27 (ouch)
Not to be confused with Alps East: http://www.yelp.com/biz/…
The service is good, friendly, and as fast as possible when they're busy which is most of the time. We've been in a few times now and each time we've had the same level of service, same quality of yummy breakfast food. They've been really good with our kids too. This is our new breakfast go-to place.
Have you ever been to a clean, well-lit diner? No? Before coming to ALPS, neither had I.
I usually prefer my diner experience to be of the greasy spoon variety, so, I was a bit skeptical on my first visit here. Upon first walking in, I thought this can't be good, everything looks so clean and sterile - Turns out I had absolutely nothing to worry about!
ALPS has a killer breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu and great service. If you visit between 6 - 9 AM you can order the early bird special which is your choice of one of their popular breakfasts for just 4.99. I've ordered the pancakes, french toast, and crepes. All were excellent.
If you love diners, do yourself a favor and check this place out. It can get busy on the weekends, but I've never had to wait long. Worth it.
Doubled up at ALPS West for breakfast this weekend. Â Saturday, I went for the Kentucky Derby Breakfast consisting of 2 biscuits with gravy, 3 eggs and 3 sausage patties. Â It was pure hillbilly delight on a plate, although my over medium eggs were far to runny, I'll just go scrambled next time. Â On Sunday I went with Jerry's mess. Â A slung-together creation of scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage, peppers, and onions. Â This was a very good breakfast. Â
ALPS west is a clean and bright, the staff is very good. Â They keep the coffee and ice water coming and are very friendly. Â Prices are competitive with most of the other joints you can find. Â The wife also approved. Â All in all a great time was had in Old Irving. Â I'll definitely be back!
Yes fiver stars may be a bit skew for this place but when you compare it to other places in the immediate neighbor you might tend to agree with me. So an altered review would still get 4 stars. Sure you could say it's just another diner similar to Golden Nugget but it's much better and significantly cheaper to. Around $10 per person including tip. Also don't be fooled by the outside the diner is a lot bigger then it looks from the outside.
Food is slightly better then you're average diner and service is just as good. The pancakes are amazing good as well.... no boxed crap here. I'll guarantee that I I will back here again.
Really like this place. Here's why:
Great, varied menu. Lots of options.
Very good food. Bacon: yum. Eggs: cooked perfectly. 3 options for adding cream to my coffee already on the table? Yes, thank you!
Very clean place (as others have mentioned), friendly servers (including the owner who greets and seats you). Great neighborhood crowd.
Inexpensive compared to similar places.
Free parking lot.
Alps, I wish you a long, happy life.
I went to this restaurant by myself on a Saturday, about 1:00p.m. I've worked in the restaurant industry and didn't want to go during 'prime time.'
With a newspaper under my arm I entered the restaurant and requested a table. The woman asked me if I wanted to sit at the counter. "No" but it seemed there were no tables available. I didn't mind waiting and let her know.
5 min passed and then ten 10 min - there was no one else in line behind me. Â I watched the occupied booth empty and another table leave. Yet for whatever reason, I wasn't seated. As this was supposed to be "Me time" I was patient, but wondered what in the heck was going on.
15 min later I stopped the man who worked there (the owner) and asked him what the delay was. He "didn't know" and had the woman (other owner) come over to tell me that because I was ONE PERSON I couldn't sit at the 4-top table or a booth, and that I had to wait longer. When I said, But You Have Had That Table Empty Ever Since I Got Here, she didn't care - - you see, "I" wasn't a party of 4. Their 2 little booths were still empty and I asked about them but NO, I WAS BY MYSELF and could not sit there. UNBELIEVABLE!
So then, after almost 20 min of waiting, I left.
Never to dirty my feet in there again!!!
***********************************
I rec'd a "love letter" from shinx calling me spoiled. Huh? Spoiled cuz they would not seat me even tho there were tables open? What a nuthead.
Meh. Â The only thing exceptional about this place is how clean it is (for a diner). Â I was also pleased that Hubs and I were able to get seats right away at 11:30am on a Sunday. Â If we didn't live down the block though, I don't really think we'd come here again. Â
The food is pretty bland! Â Hubs ordered this breakfast tortilla that had peppers, chorizo and egg in it that sounded flavorful on the menu, but left much to be desired. Â The chorizo looked like reconstituted meat from Taco Bell. Â He drowned it in hot sauce just to get it to taste like something, which still wasn't much. Â And the hashbrowns were also mushy and flavorless. Â
My three deuces were adequate, but for almost $7.00... it left me disappointed. Â Maybe I just have too high of diner expectations. Â I'm sure we will come back since we live so close, at which point I think I'll give one of their skillets a try.
Has never been the same since my first stop by. My Bf and I have frequented to try other things on the menu and never seem to be impressed with anything else the same way the pancakes won our heart.
Here are as follows
+ soup hasn't failed yet so far. Chicken and rice soup was awesome. Creamy and filling. Nowhere near bland. Tomato with barley soup - a creamy tomato base and the barley soft. Also really good.
- Serving-size spoons (pretty thick and heavy) for your soup.
+eggs florentine. Think eggs benedict, minus the ham. Add spinach. Â Made pretty well. The English muffin doesn't hold up to egg yolk well though. I would have liked a slight toast on em. Otherwise, delicious, and yum.
- Cobb salad. Simple..... ice berg lettuce a little watery for the salad. Chicken and bacon done well. Â Otherwise nothing too special. Bleu cheese dressing did ok, but with watery lettuce, it didn't really hold. Â Pretty forgettable.
- chorizo skillet. Looked like a hot mess. Didn't taste like much. Just looked like a red, greasy, mish mash of eggy meatloaf texture. Not so appetizing.
In conclusion, I'd say stick with the breakfast items. Â Pancakes, hash browns, and eggs. Â These won't disappoint. There's a few combos they offer to include breakfast items... Â like 2x2x2, plus bacon/sausage/or not... etc etc.
Any other selections, that's your call =). In terms of service, it's decent if you don't mind being called "kids" all day by certain waitresses.
Okay so anyone who knows me knows I love breakfast. Â I have been known to become giddy at the sight of pancakes. Â Alps did not disappoint me one little bit.
What I found to be more enjoyable was the friendliness of everyone that I came across. Â It appears to be family owned and they have staff that have been with them for years.
I mean let's be honest, you can get really good breakfast many place but the service here is AWESOME!
They may see me on Saturday AND Sunday mornings. :-)
Hey, to me, a diner's a diner. Â Basic, fast, cheap. Â I have learned not to expect much. Â And I actually had not expected much of the new Alps, but after going there twice and being turned away (one because the wait was around 45 minutes and the other because we didnt realize they closed at 3pm), I was suddenly stricken with the NEED to go there. Â Sort of like this juvenile reaction to not receiving a desired toy... WANT, NEED, HAVE TO HAVE.
So finally, on a remarkably crap-tastic Saturday, with a windy, wet snow falling at a rapid pace, we took my out of town friend and attempted the Alps for the third time. Â
We were seated almost immediately and presented with a migraine inducing menu...so many choices! Â I finally decided on their take of huevos rancheros, which came with warm corn tortillas and hashbrowns. Â Not the most authentic dish, but prepared well and tasty. Â The service was good and they kept us in water and coffee the whole time. Â I also appreciated the design of the place, which was clean and modern and not pink and hokey like some diners I have been to.
I guess the third time really is the charm. Â I liked the Alps and would not hesitate to return. Â Also the fact that it is convenient to where I live is a big bonus!
I'm really surprised at all the negative reviews! We had a great experience here. We walked in early on a Sunday afternoon and were promptly greeted and seated by a very friendly woman. The place was 3/4 full and very clean.
We were immediately served hot, delicious coffee. Now, I know this doesn't do it for everyone, but I was really pleased they had flavored creamers at the table. Score.
We had typical breakfasts...an omelet and pancakes...and it was delicious. There was so much food, and it was all hot and fresh. The waitstaff was attentive and kept the coffee cup full. When the bill came, it was more than reasonable for all the food we received.
I am very happy to have this place in my neighborhood. But you should stay out. I don't want to have to wait in line.
I have been waiting for MONTHS for this place to open, and finally they did!
It was crowded for a Friday morning, and full of children that should have been in school. We were served fresh, hot coffee and water right away. Our server, Jeanne, was attentive and sweet. It was her second day on the job, and some jerk at the table next to us was complaining about his toast incessantly. She handled it with grace.
We ordered the Veggie Skillet for my husband, and I ordered Ladies Special #1 (eggs, pancakes, and toast)! Our food took a while, but they were busy. I loved the extensive menu, and the bright, sunny atmosphere in this Greek-owned restaurant. Our food was solid, decent, and the portions are generous. But, sorry ALPs, the pancakes are better at the G.N. (golden nugget).
I will definitely come back to try a Sassy Salad or something off of the Waist Watchers section. I love restaurants that are Weight Watcher Friendly!!!
