Attentive and friendly owner and staff!! Always make you feel at home! The hot and sour soup is delicious! so is the general tsos chicken. The fried rice and lo mein would be better if the shrimp was deveined!!!! That would be my only complaint. It is hard to find a chinese restaurant that cleans their shrimp properly. Otherwise one star taken off for the shrimp and the price. 5 stars for service!
Review Source:Service is easily 5 stars. Â Our server was very attentive, and the owner spoke with us on our way out. Â They couldn't have been nicer. Â
They were so nice, I hate to critique the food, but I got the impression they might appreciate the feedback.
I started with hot and sour soup. Â I enjoyed it. Â Not amazing but very solid. Â But then came the chicken wings. Â I'm not sure if the cook was having an off day but they were just awful. Â Overly breaded and the breading was completely burnt. Â I love chicken wings, and despite being a chicken wing snob, they have to be really bad for me to not be able to eat them. Â I finished one with great difficulty and had to leave the rest. Â I felt terrible, because I think our server could tell I didn't like them but I didn't have the heart to tell her how bad they were. Â It's one of those places where you just don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. Â
Next I had the Thai basil Lo Mein. Â The menu didn't say it came with shrimp, but it did. Â I'm allergic. Â Once again, service was fantastic and I was quickly given a new order. Â It was just OK. Â
They did give us a free dessert which I enjoyed. Â In summation, phenomenal service, but some of the food we ordered was just way off. Â If it weren't for the wings I could see this being a 4 star joint just based on the service. Â But the wings were just so so bad. Â
I can see why folks enjoy this place though, as the owner and servers really make you feel at home.
Eh. Â The food was expensive and very "American" Chinese food. Â The wife had General Tso's chicken (yeah yeah, I know, "American,") and I had the Szechuan chicken. Â We also got the chicken fried rice. Â The GTC and SC were mediocre. Â The CFR was solid. Â We also had the spring rolls (fried) and the egg rolls. Â Neither were terribly good. Â And for $40 for all, it was more than it was worth. Â They were very nice which is why the third star but, honestly, it wasn't anything I would write home for.
Review Source:Effectively, one of the best Asian diners in our area. Â It seems as if it would be basic being in an older model strip mall, but I would hit this place up before you go back to your usual Asian diner.
The staff are tremendously friendly and very attentive. Â They give you a very large glass for iced tea and then leave a carafe when they bring a refill. Â I love things spicy so I got the combination red curry. Â This had lots of beef, chicken, and shrimp in a very rich, VERY spicy red curry. Â Awesome in every way a curry can be awesome. Â You get so much of your main dish, I would suggest getting maybe one extra order of steamed rice per person. Â My wife ordered the General Tso... flippin' insanely good! Â Nice sized chunks of chicken in probably the best sauce I've had inside an Asian diner. Â Bar none! Â Oh, you can order anything on the menu spicy, so you don't have to be pigeon holed into the meals that come automatically spicy. Â I'll be getting the General Tso's chicken spicey next time. Â Like no other General Tso sauce we've ever had. Â Like a plum based, thick, just plain delicious! Â Kids gobbled up the noodles and staff were pleasantly helpful to their needs and friendly. Â Some Asian diners don't give the kids attention and almost seem to despise them being there.
Good location, very friendly, and well above average in every way! Â Can't wait to go back.
The prices were too high for the quality of the food. Â I'm not a picky eater, but something tasted funny with the general tso chicken. Â Honestly, I wasn't sure if it was chicken or not. Â My husband and I ate very slowly; then he looked at me and asked, "Is it the quality of the meat?" Â I looked over to the side and said, "I'm not sure, honey." We never came back; but we just don't talk about it anymore because we're so disturbed. Â The customer service was amazing, which is why I gave it two stars.
Review Source:I mean it was AIGHT
I was starving one night and was in the mood to try somewhere I'd never been, so I hit up Yelp. See the ratings, and the location ... oh snap! They right down the street!
So we slide through preparing to be amazed, and it was ... well, it was Chinese food. It was good, yes, but for the price/quantity? Eh ...
The quantity was less than what I woulda paid at a Chinese joint in the mall, and the price itself is maybe $3 away from what I'd pay for P.F. Chang
But on the plus side, the service was good and our waitress was friendly, and I can say that the general tso's WAS better than the average Chinese spot
So overall, if you life like 3-5 mins away and don't feel like venturing any further to get any Chinese, then go for it. Maybe I'm just a hungry dude, but I came starving and left two notches away from hungry aka I could stand to eat again in another two hours
Asian Grill is a restaurant that our family (husband, 3-year old and I) will be revisiting. Â
The restaurant is very nicely decorated and very clean. Â There isn't anything spectacular about the menu. Â The menu consists of all the traditional items that you would expect at a Chinese-American style restaurant. Â (Note to self: Â Don't order tea next time... Â Had to pay for it... Â It came in a tea bag... Â You're not in Chinatown.) Â
We ordered the crispy beef, prawns, and beef lo mien. Â The dishes were all moderate portions. Â Between the three of us, we gobbled everything up. Â I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. Â Everything that came out was fresh, hot and tasty. Â I appreciated that the food came out pretty quickly after we ordered it. Â This is a plus having a three year old who has a short attention span. Â
This restaurant is family friendly but can do better. Â They have fish in the front of the restaurant that I am sure that kids love. Â They don't have kid cups and the chocolate milk we ordered came in a tall glass that made it really challenging for a 3 year old to drink out of. Â Next time we visit I'm bringing my own drink boxes.
The service was OK. Â The manager was friendly. Â Our server was a little inexperienced but it didn't take away from our overall experience at this restaurant. Â
The apple won-ton that came out at the end of the meal was a pleasant treat to end the meal. Â
We used a $25 gift certificate that we had bought on-line for a nominal price. Â With the coupon, our bill came to $36 including the tip. Â (They calculated the tip into our final bill.) Â We didn't have any leftovers. Â We had a nice evening together as a family. Â And with the coupon we felt our meal was a great value. Â Our overall experience was positive. Â
Thanks for reading!
Saw the raving reviews on yelp about half a year ago and decided to give Asian Grill a try! Even though the reviews are flattering, Â they do the food no justice until you've experienced it for yourself. In times where top-notch ingredients and superior hospitality is overlooked, and the fast food industry complimented with cheap prices serves king, Asian Grill is a fantastic reminder that you get what you pay for!
Review Source:I have been here many times and have never had a meal I didn't love.
The service is always great. It's the kind of place where the owner's and servers are always happy to see you. Owner's walk around talking to customers and making suggestions.
I stick with the General Tso's anytime I get Chinese and it's incredible here. Also recommend the crab wontons.
Go here for a special occasion and the owner will bring out a little buddha statue for a party trick everyone will love.
You won't be disappointed.
Fantastic food! Â My husband and I ordered take out from Asian Grill last night after reading positive reviews on Yelp. Â Our food was so delicious! Â General Tso's, fried rice, spring rolls and dumplings were all perfectly cooked and seasoned. Â I only wish they delivered....but it will be worth the drive to take out anyway.
Review Source:Egg rolls and spring rolls for appetizers. Â Tough to find a decent chinese restaurant in the sea of thai places that permeate northern va. Â Overall the food was very tasty and fresh. Â Went back when family came to town and they also enjoyed it. Â In a small shopping center and it seems like the police hang out there...safe? or are they just waiting to catch a DUI??? Â Recommend this for casual sit down.
Review Source:There's a reason why my family and I travel thirty minutes to eat at Asian Grill, the food is simply superb! Asian Grill reinvents boring traditional Chinese dishes  by adding their own flavorful twists and fine ingredients. My wife and I love their lettuce wraps and crab rangoons and we haven't decided on a favorite entree (everything we've tried so far has been terrific) . Our children's favorite dishes are the succulent crispy beef and savory sweet n' sour chicken!  Asian Grill is  one of the best restaurants in Northern Virginia.
The friendly atmosphere, great service, and  the wide-variety of unique&delicious Chinese cuisines makes this a restaurant you should definitely try
I'm actually so sad about this one, as when I lived in VA it was my favorite chinese place to go. Â I remember their fantastic steamed dumplings, and it had to be reasonable since we were all poor back then we couldn't afford expensive places.
So I went back last week with my mom, and noticed they had renovated (which does look nice). Â It was lunch, and in looking at the lunch menu I was pretty surprised at the prices (9-11 bucks for a lunch entree). Â But I ordered my diet coke, and they asked my Mom if she wanted tea so she said yes. Â Well, out they bring the Diet coke in a can with a glass of ice. Â Hmmm, so my bad feeling was right. Â No free refills and they charge me 2 bucks for a can of soda.
Then come to find out they charged us $2 for the tea as well. Â I've never heard of a chinese restaurant charging for the tea they serve!
We ordered the lettuce wraps ($8.50). Â I usually love the chicken lettuce wraps, but I honestly didn't see that there was any chicken in there at all and it wasn't good. Â But the worse part is, they gave you two pieces of lettuce with the filling in them. Â No decent size plate with the half a head of lettuce like most places.
So on the on to the entree's. Â The food itself wasn't bad, although my combination had 2 shrimp and more onions & peppers than meat. Â The taste wasn't bad, although they definately didn't give you much food (hey, at least I didn't overeat!)
Of course later that day I did get a little sick, and although I can't prove it was from the food I'm definately not willing to give it another shot. Â But my fond memories of this place are definately GONE!
I do not live in Northern VA, i'm in Maryland. Â Asian food must be better in MD if reviewers from VA think this place is good. Â The food is average compared to the restaurants I have eaten. Â The reviews led me to believe Asian Grill uses white meat chicken. Â My orange chicken was NOT white meat. Â Service was extremely slow and we were the ONLY people in the place. Â We went today for my cousin's birthday (she lives in Springfield), I felt bad for recommending the place. Â It was expensive $17 for sesame shrimp and the portion was small. Â It was 3pm so I asked if they had a lunch menu, they did not. Â The egg rolls we ordered were carry out quality, just your average every day egg roll.
Review Source:After reading the reviews on yelp I had to try this place. Â I'm a self proclaimed Chinese food snob and this place is the real deal! Â I ordered an egg roll and General Tso's Chicken. Â This is one of the best eggrolls I've had in YEARS. Â At the end they give you more items to further along the insulin induced coma-sugar covered fried dumplings with apple-carmel crap inside...YUMMMMM.
The owner was so sweet and kind, he came out to chat with me and offered extras. I LOVE this place!
Update: been back several times at this point. Â I've also had the Lo Mein, Egg Drop soup, crab dumplings, and Seasame Chicken. Â I've never walked out disappointed or disgusted. Â I've also made several other people fall in love with this place.
I say it's one of the better Chinese (Kung Pao and Orange Chicken Chinese) restaurants in the area (DC is not the best place to look for good Chinese, but it still says something). It's not what you expect from a restaurant, tucked in a suburban shopping mall... The food is not greasy or heavy, even if it's deep fried. The seafood is always cooked perfectly, the sauces are light, the staff is friendly and you even get a free deep fried wonton with apple filling and cinnamon sugar in addition to your fortune cookie at the end of your meal. Now that's a good package. When I discovered this spot, I went there three times in two weeks!
You'll pay few bucks more than in, i.e. nearby Hunan West, but, as one of the hostesses politely bragged, they use really fresh ingredients and change their oil frequently. And your belly can really feel that.
Here you won't stuff yourself with a greasy mediocre all you can eat buffet food. Instead you'll get a generous platter of quality food for a reasonable price.
Oh, and I really like the enthusiastic guy, who greets you :)
My wife is typically harsh on Chinese food unless it meets extremely high standards. Â This is one of those times that it didn't meet her standards but also it didn't close to meeting mine either. Â We went here because of the high Yelp ratings.
From the beginning, their service was a little off from the small things like being greeted and seated, being given water, having a waiter come by within a reasonable amount of time to take an order and providing everybody with a set of utensil WITHOUT BEING ASKED. Â My youngest had to wipe off something from his seat.
My kids ordered roasted pork fried rice and shrimp fried rice. Â They have tasted worse. Â They rated theirs average from 2.5 to 3 stars.
My wife ordered General Tso's but she felt it was greasy and gives it 2 stars. I noticed that my kids kept on asking her for some of hers. Â So, it might actually be better. Â They finished off all theirs as well but I have to say that the portions were moderate and not generous compared to other places.
I order Chicken Chow Mein with white rice when ordering from a new Chinese restaurant. Â For me, it serves the same purpose as ordering Chicken Parmigiana at an Italian restaurant. Â It gives me a feel for how good a place is. Â When I got it, it was served attractively with an almost too generous helping of hard noodles (don't know their name). Â I noticed that there was no soy sauce on the table or with the dish. Â I asked for the soy sauce and put a moderate sprinkling on my first few bites. Â I normally mix a little bit of the chow mein with white rice and some soy sauce as I am eating. Â Usually, the chow mein is bland enough to require a little help. Â When I tasted it, I thought I might have put too much somehow because it was so salty. Â After several spoonfuls, I got suspicious and just ate it without the soy sauce and I was surprised at how salty it was. Â I don't know if someone made a mistake in preparation but there was no mistaking the skimpy thin strips of chicken hidden all those noodles. Â This ranked as one of the worst chicken chow mein dishes I have ever eaten.
It did not take long for my wife to conclude she would never eat there again. Â They badly flunked my chicken chow mein test. Â When I asked for the check, nobody came by to pick it up. Â We left a tip at the table, walked over to the register where we appeared to be ignored by the owner until she noticed I was paying using Discover, told me that they don't accept Discover and ignored me again. Â A waitress walked over and took my VISA and processed the payment.
I wanted to like the place but they never gave me a chance.
This is my favorite restaurant in the area. Â The service is fantastic and the food is wonderful! Â The owner is so friendly and always remembers everyone's names. Â You are treated like friends or family here, rather than a customer. Â I recommend the Asian wrap for an appetizer (it's large though, could be a meal), and the Crispy Beef for an entree. Â Delicious!
Review Source:My husband and I just visited this restaurant on 8/4/2010 based solely on the reviews here (and my desire to not cook that night!). Sorry to rain on the parade of 4's and 5's here, but perhaps the other reviewers have not been to very many Chinese food restaurants in the area; Asian Grill is OK, but certainly far from "the best in NoVA."
The service here was extremely prompt and friendly. We were greeted hello and wished farewell. The owner came out at one point and greeted every table BUT ours (I assume because he knew everyone else in the restaurant, as it seemed every other guest present gave him hugs or asked after his family; the same went for the waitresses & customers). It left us feeling a bit like we were not in the cool kids club.
Also, at the end of our meal, we sat waiting for someone to clear plates and pack up the portions we couldn't eat for at least 5+ minutes - which was strange because we were interrupted every few minutes the entirety of our visit there with questions of "Is everything okay?" and pouring more water to fill our drinks, etc etc. (which is fine; that's part of the prompt service, it was just strange to have it drop off for so long at the end of our meal).
But I am jumping ahead - the main thing I wanted to mention here is the actual food. I had the wonton soup to start and it was very good - the wontons were filled with a delicious meat mixture, and I was expecting quality food based on the reviews here, so we were off to a good start. We also tried the pu-pu platter (I think another reviewer mentioned this) and it too was very good. The chicken wings in particular were amazing.
When we got to our main course, however, we were not impressed with the taste. The dishes certainly looked good. I got Sha-Cha chicken, and my husband had Kung Pao chicken and Pork Lo Mein. My dish was not what I had been expecting (me comparing it with other Sha-Cha chicken dishes I have had); the flavor was not the spicy deliciousness that I love - just a weird sauce that I couldn't quite place the flavor on.
My husband reported the Kung Pao was barely spicy but okay, and the lo mein noodles were over-cooked and rubbery, and he mentioned MSG-taste (I am not sure of his claims on that - but there you go). We ended up boxing up 1/2 of every dish to take home (the portions were very reasonable for the price), however, we discovered once we got home that they did not pack ANY white rice to go with them! I have NEVER been to a Chinese restaurant that did not at least pack up the leftover rice from the table - if not a whole new container!
When we got our bill we also received fortune cookies and 2 little wonton wrappers that had been slightly filled with some apple pie filling and sprinkled w/cinnamon and sugar and baked. A cute farewell that is apparently the standard at this place, based on the other reviews.
I would be willing to give this place another try, but Dave & Chung's is still THE BEST Chinese food in the area.
Thank you yelp! I needed a good quick place to eat dinner before seeing a show at Jaxx, and this is what came up in my search results.
Bah, this review has sat here unfinished for so long that I do not remember the details. The overview though was that I was very happy with what I got. The food was good, the service was good, the proximity to Jaxx is sweet. I will be back.
Very undercover place that has really good food with VERY reasonable prices! They have a really cool fish at the entrance too that will follow you from one side of the tank to the other (never seen any other fish do this before). I would go here again just to play with fish =)
They use all white meat chicken and give you this yummy fried mini  fortune cookie shaped dessert thing with apple filling after your meal - for free! Soo good, definitely coming back!
Definitely like this place. Â We came here to celebrate a birthday for a pair of twins that I know and the good service started there.
My wife and I showed up first and we were greeted warmly and then shown the table. Â The lady started breaking into a bunch of Chinese when I said thank you in Mandarin and I quickly had to tell her that we were Korean so she would switch back to English. Â Lesson #1 - I need to learn more Korean than 'hello,' 'goodbye,' 'yes,' 'no,' 'thank you,' and 'I'm Korean.'
The food was good too - I liked the orange beef and pork fried rice. Â If I had to get critical, it would be the hot and sour soup and the crab rangoons. Â The soup wasn't hot and the rangoons had a weird filling inside that I couldn't describe as melted cream cheese like I'm used to. Â But they were still palatable.
After dinner, the gentleman that I guess is the owner was very entertaining. Â Besides giving my friends a pair of Kirin dolls as birthday presents, he brought out a set of what looked like kewpie dolls on a dish. Â We watched in a dumbfounded stare as the dolls sang happy birthday followed by him pouring hot water on the dolls. Â The dolls...then...peed on us. Â Yes, peed. Â We were shocked but apparently they were toy soaked in cold water that shot the water out when the hot water caused it to expand. Â Utter hilarity ensued for about 20 minutes following that.
Great experience - but the restaurant is a tad far for me and The Wife to make a frequent trek out here unless we're going to meet up with our friends in Fairfax.
I love this place. Â It's the best Chinese Food in the DC area, IMO, which is a crazy claim but I'd stand by it. Â They use all white meat chicken, for starters, and all the food actually tastes clean and fresh. Â It isn't like the Hunan's Hunan Hunan down the road in that grungy strip mall. Â
The owner of this place owns Ho's Dynasty in Burke and obviously learned from a lot of the mistakes of that place. Â Instead of being another generic numbered-dish Chinese carry out depot, this place is actually a robust pan-Asian restaurant that specialized in their Chinese food. Â
Don't believe me? Â Had dinner on Christmas Eve from this place with five people who live in DC and they were all blown away at how good this little restaurant in Springfield was. Â They even talked about making the drive out to the 'burbs just to get some more of it. Â When you're willing to drive 20-30 minutes to get carryout, you're doing something right.
My family (mom, dad, sister and her 2 boys) and I came here last night for Mother's Day dinner. It was fairly packed. My dad called ahead and made "reservations" so we had no trouble being seated. The location is hidden away in the corner of a small shopping center. I would have never thought to come eat here if my dad hadn't read something about it in the local newspaper.
The decor was so red. I felt like it was Lunar New Year in there all year round, with the koi fish and dragon art work to the red firecrackers hanging from the ceilings. It was cute, but I just can't forget the RED.
It's called "Asian Grill" when it really should be called "Chinese Grill". 95 percent of the menu is all Chinese cuisine. The drink menu consisted of only liquor and cocktails. We had to ask the waitress what they had to offer that wasn't alcoholic, so the soda selection was told to us verbally. They didn't have beer on the menu either, however, it was available. Between the 6 of us, we ordered: Steamed Ginger Lobster, Sesame Beef, General Tsos Chicken, Thai Basil Shrimp, Combination Fried Rice, and Steamed Veggies with brown sauce. There was nothing "Thai" about the Thai Basil Shrimp. It tasted like ordinary shrimp that was seasoned with a plentiful amount of basil. The rest of the entrees we ordered weren't plain but weren't so rich in flavor -- We all agreed that it was best suited for American taste. They went easy on the portion-size, unlike the rest of the Chinese places we've been to.. we thought we'd have plenty of left overs to take home, but ended our meal with empty plates. I liked that they had brown rice available by request; I ordered a cupful separately for myself for an extra dollar. We were given apple wonton as dessert, on the house. I thought this was a nice treat. It was very delicious and a great way to have people remember your restaurant.
The managers were very friendly and came by each table to make sure everyone was alright. It seemed like most of the people who were dining there were regulars because the managers knew them by name and face.
The tab came out to about 125, meaning 20 dollars a person. For the amount of food we got, we were totally surprised when we got the bill. I'm not a big fan of Chinese food to begin with so average Chinese food at a low price works for me. I would come again.
A very nice Chinese restaurant. Â The kung pao chicken is quite spicy and we really enjoyed the dessert, a deep fried apple won ton (which was gratis). Â Not inexpensive, but it won't break the bank. Â Back in the Fantasy Garden days (for whatever reason that's where I ended up proposing to my wife) I remember a much larger restaurant with an extensive lunch buffet. Â I think they've reduced the size of the restaurant and seemingly concentrated on improving the food quite a bit. Â Service was friendly and attentive. Â But where are the chop sticks?? Â I agree with Wendy on the Koi, they need a better home.
Review Source:A remodled version of it's former self. For those that might remember, it was called Fantasy Garden. It used to have a pretty typical Chinese resturant interior. Now, they've revamped and made the place look a bit more upscale. Not in a bad way either.
It had been almost a year since we had gone. (My now removed gall bladder made eating chinese a bit hard) I so badly wanted their Schezuan chicken. Not surprising at all, the hostess remembered who we were. It seems she can remember everyone. She sat us down and the cutest and friendliest waitress came over to us. She joked with us about everything. Even gave us little plastic animals for our soda. The portions were huge as always. We ate, drank and were merry. They asked us if we wanted dessert, but we were very full and declined gracefully. They brought us a small dessert anyway (on the house too!)
I always recommend them when someone asks about good chinese food. The crispy chicken is so good. The staff is so kind. The place is very unassuming. And, it can be very packed on a weeknight. Those that have been here for a while know it's a welcome place to visit.
I do wish they would put their Koi in a better setting, but that's ok.
