Is there anything more difficult than rating Mediterranean restaurants? Â On the one hand they are damn near perfectly homogenous but on the other, that homogeneity is a relatively healthy and quick meal that rarely disappoints.
For me, the question of rating Mediterranean restaurants comes down to comparing and contrasting 4 different places: Baba Pita, Falafel & Grill, Dawali Mediterranean Kitchen & Sultan's Market. Â It pains me to admit this, since I've ordered from Baba Pita what feels like 1000 times and never been disappointed in what I received, but it's clear that Baba Pita is a distant fourth in this comparison. All the other three have something that they are the best at, and unfortunately that squeezes Baba Pita to an average three. But that's not as bad as it sounds, c'mon Baba Pita, it's not you, it's me, I just need some space.
We've ordered twice for delivery via GrubHub and all I can say is, this place is super fast, super reasonably priced and super tasty. Plus, they have beaten the predicted delivery time by more than 10 minutes and our soup was very hot. Speaking of the soup- they have some of the best lentil soup in the city, I'm convinced. I can't really think of any complaints- the only thing I'm lacking is a clarification on whether the shrimp entree is fried or not. If it's not, then I'm getting it on our next order. And oh yes, there will be more orders...Yum!
Review Source:I work in the west loop and have been grabbing lunch here from the day they opened... This past Thursday will be my last. I ordered the tabule along with a couple of other sides. The tabule was mush... my guess is at least three days old. Against my better judgment I ate it and ended up very sick at about 6:00pm the same night.
Review Source:I placed an order tonight from Baba Pita that was missing an item. Â I called the restaurant right away and received horrible customer service. Â The restaurant told me they couldn't locate my order if I gave them the order # and said they'd need to contact the driver. Â I asked if they'd call me back and they said they would, which they didn't. Â When I called again to see what the status was, the same person answered. Â I asked for a credit on the purchase and they said they couldn't do this because it was purchased online. Â The person mocked me and said in a fecicious manner that it was so terrible I didn't receive this item. Â That wasn't my main issue. Â My issue was that they could have cared less and didn't provide reasonable customer service and awknowledge my complaint or at the least, apologize for forgetting my item. Â I will not be ordering from them again.
Review Source:Ordered from this place about ten times then I noticed the food quality going downhill, the meat was chewy, rice overcooked, sauces tasted a bit off. Then they started screwing up my completely simple orders for one. The final nail in the coffin was when I found a few black curly hairs in my food that sort of looked like pubes...not saying they were but thats what they reminded me of and then caused me to vomit the meal out I had started to eat. Needless to say I wont be ordering from them again and I dont even want to think about their sanitation behind closed doors. Gross.
Review Source:Good falafel. Dill rice, not good, too overpowering. Food is decent but waaaay too expensive for what it is, pita, rice, and meat at just ok quality. And no one wants the"free" sugary soda with delivery. If you're going to offer a free soda, at least ask which kind the customer prefers, save the Mountain Dew for someone in BFE Michigan. Or give them some free falafel with their order. The guy on the phone is great though, very enthusiastic.
Review Source:This place is the bomb for shawarma. Â I've had the shrimp and the salmon and those are ok but nothing special. Â The chicken and beef shawarmas here are both outstanding. Â Succulent, tender marinated strips of your choice on top of a bed of excellent basmati rice plus a very nice house-made garlic sauce and/or hot sauce turns this dish into a party in your mouth. Â Side salad is ok, hummus is ok to good, falafel ok etc etc. Â Get the shawarma! Â Excellent size portions for $12-13.
Service can be hit or miss. Â Sometimes the guy answering the phone isn't very personable. Â Delivery sometimes takes 45 minutes to an hour. Â But dang, that shawarma has me whipped!
Baba Pita saved the day! We needed office catering. I had previously called another popular Mediterranean spot but they were rude on the phone, and not willing to work with me or my budget (which wasn't even that small.)
The folks at Baba Pita were very accommodating and were able to take care of our catering needs. Everyone loved the food! Several people asked where it was from and asked for the restaurant to be used again for future events.
I would order from here again without hesitation.
Came in one late night thinking I was going to get something good to eat and "somewhat" healthy. Bottom line I was highly disappointed. I don't know if it was the time we came in or if the food is always this bad.
I had the salmon and it was over cooked and very very dry. I never had salmon this bad. I was not a fan of the lentil soup or the sides I had either. The best thing I had was the falafel and I only ordered it cause I was waiting and it was cheap.
I would like to try them again at a different time, but the food was so bad I would hate to waste my money again.
I ordered the chicken schwarma and it came with two slices of pita, hummus, lentil soup, cucumber salad, rice and a cookie--I devoured it all! And while waiting for my order, I was given a taste test of the falafel which was also delicious--not dried out like a lot of places.
In sum, Baba Pita is a great deal for an assortment of food that's hot, flavorful, and quick.
Delicious!!! I had the shawarma platter. Yum yum. The rice is well flavored. Tasty hummus. Also had the falafel, honestly some if the best falafel I have had!! Â The meat is all halal. The prices are great and the staff is super nice. Definite win on the strawberry mint lemonade. :) my new go to!
Review Source:I tried them out at Riot Fest, the guy was really trying to grab people for their tent and it totally worked!
He was so funny and also the food looked/sounded delicious. He answered our questions about side dishes and what not. My bestie got the shwarma (sp?) and I ordered a kebab. It was about 8pm at night and Riot Fest had been going on since 11am-ish. The food was still so fresh, the veggies were great! The lettuce was crunchy and they gave a generous amount of hummus. I got lots of rice and chicken, the pita was so good. After a long day of dancing/moshing/walking/etc. It filled me up in a good way. Very satisfying! I actually had to give some of my rice away cause I was full (and I wanted a smoothie...) haha. I do have to say the chicken was a little burned but other than that I was very happy with it. Reasonable prices too!
Do NOT order from here. Â My order was more than 45 minutes late. Â The food was cold. Â The sodas were warm. Â The shawarma was dry and tough. Â Instead of the the 2 orders of Baklava we ordered (at $5.90) they sent us 3 pre-packed date-filled cookies (at $1.50 each) with no explanation or refund.
This was overall a terrible experience, and I will never be ordering from Baba Pita again.
Food is good, but order accuracy problems. Â
The first time I ordered from them, they left off part of the order. Â The guy was really nice and returned to bring me the missing part. Â The food was good enough, I tried them again. Â For a second time, they left off part of my order. Â When I called to tell the guy at the restaurant, he apolgized and told me the driver was on his way back. I told him this is the second time it had happened and he was very reponsive and sympathetic. I waited for about 30 min and he never showed. Â When I tried to call back, they were closed for the evening. Â I figured if they didn't care, I'd just spread the word.
All in all, not worth the hassle. Â Not to mention, there was something in the 2nd order that made me sick. Â I'd pass on this one.
Im writing a review because I am annoyed and angered by this place!
We just moved in a block away and wanted to check it out.. My boyfriend came on YELP and was checking out the menu, noticed a yelp discount (spend $6 for $10 worth) So he got that and we ordered. Â My boyfriend called them to be sure they got the order because we didnt get a confirmation. The man on the phone was extremely rude saying they dont support yelp. Â So I called back and explained to him, he was obnoxious and rude again. Â So we paid full price and didnt get to use the yelp coupon (pizza was pretty good) Â So the guy called yelp and stated they are not supposed to have that offer online anymore. Â He then told my boyfriend, "oh dont worry about it, you order again and ill give you the deal, no worries!" So we thought alright hes being a nice guy, cant wait to order again!
Last night, craving hummus all day, we called to order the thursday special and extras. Â My bf mentioned our yelp deal and the guy said, " yeah i remember you, you have to call yelp for a refund, we cant give it to you!!!" Â after all that... what an ass!
So he lied, strung us along and then was an ass again.. We cancelled our order and will never go back! Â
Thanks for the friendly business buddy
Average. Â Chicken sharwarma was dry. Â Beef sharwarma was well seasoned, but wasn't really sharwarma, but a flat piece of skirt steak. Â Tasted good, but just not your traditional sharwarma.
I liked the beef kufta -- flavorful, tender, and juicy. Â I would probably recommend getting that next time. Â The hummus and rice here are especially good. Â This place would easily get 4 stars if their sharwarmas were better!
Solid 4 star! Â
My fiance and I were out in the neighborhood last night trying to decide what we wanted for dinner when we walked by Baba Pita. Â Our big argument of the night was we didn't want something to disappoint. Â I tend to be a little more critical on Middle Eastern food being my that heritage is Lebanese but we decided we might as well give it a shot. Â We ordered a variety of things but I tried to keep my expectations low. Â
Falafel....didn't even order this, but I certainly would next time. Â So moist and full of flavor, a definite treat for us. Â I tend to not order at most places because it is usually dried out or bland. Â Good job!
Combo platter: Â Nothing I didn't like on it although I think the beef sang to me while the kafta was my fiances favorite. Â Overall I wouldn't hesitate to order any of it again, and I am sure we will order all of it again at some point.
Chicken Schwarma: Â Solid. Â I can't say it was the best I have ever had, but again, I am hard to impress with Middle Eastern food and I enjoyed it and would order again. Â
To top it off they threw in a Mamoul- a date filled cookie that just happens to be one of my all time favorites! Â
The dill rice was nice. Â Sometimes I thought there may be a little too much dill, but overall we were a fan of it. Â
The staff was super friendly and accommodating, the prices were right, and the food was solid! Â this will be on our regular rotation of take out in the West Loop. Â I look forward to sampling the rest of the menu over time!
I love Baba ghanoush and theirs is one of the best that I have had. It's flavorful and smoky and a small container of it can tide me over a couple of days. I also order the veggie combo plate. It comes with two falafel, Baba ganoush, hummus (not such a fan), tabbouleh salad, grape leaves, mixed green salad (a little too much dressing), and pita. The falafel could be better but it all pulls together for a couple of nice sandwiches.
Their delivery is fast and seeing how my coworkers and I tend to order every couple of weeks, they have not messed up an order yet.
I ate from here on 3 different occasions.
The first time, the tables were all occupied by dirty plates or someone. It appears to be a family-run business. The service was courteous :) They were warm and friendly.
I am new to middle-eastern/ Mediterranean food so I had to ask for recommendation. I was recommended the chicken Shawarma (sp?) and the second time it was beef shawarma. I had to agree with the recommendation... The chicken tasted better.
I also love hummus. This was the first time I had it. We also ordered the lamb leg (generous portion for the price).
Since I ordered with a groupon (on two occasions), the food and amount was well worth it.
Decor: 4/5 really authentic feel. The minute I walked through the doors, I felt like I stepped into a new place. There were pictures of foreign countries and it really had a personal touch to it :) I love the waiting area by the door!
Atmosphere: 4/5 relatively quiet, tv is on, and it's pretty small there but still nice
Food: 5/5 need I say more? It's tasty! I usually had problem guzzling a lot of water after eating foods with a lot of spices and stuff but not this time :)
Service: 5 friendly folks and checked up on us several times (though we only ate there once... the other two times we had to order to go)
Price: 5/5 generous portions
I would come back for more when I'm in the area!
This place has really gone downhill. I've been ordering from them for years. Recently the food has become very bland, and the falafel tastes like old grease. Most upsetting is the horrible customer service. Three times in a row, my order has been wrong. I called to complain, and unfortunately instead of an apology I was given loads of attitude.
Needless to say, I'm done with this place. Such a bummer - it used to be great. Â Pull it together, Baba Pita..
Came here with a Groupon Now deal and got the veggie combo entree, drink and baklava.
The combo included every veggie item I would have wanted. All was fresh and good. Bonus points for their salad using mixed greens instead of iceberg. The manager was very nice, street parking is plentiful.
Prices are reasonable, although Taza (in the loop) has a similar veggie plate for a few dollars cheaper (but with fewer items). My meal without the groupon would have been over $15 which isn't bad, but more than I would want to spend for a takeout lunch.
I would definitely come back here, but would probably come for one of their daily specials which seem really good.
I usually end up going here at least once a week for lunch. The food is consistently tasty and as everyone appropriately raves, the hummus is among the best.
Before coming here, I wasn't a fan of felafel and in fact, the concept scared me, but now I get it nearly every time I go. It's cooked with excellent spices and perfectly crispy on the outside, while warm and fluffy on the inside. The chicken schwarma is a favorite as well.
This place is super cheap, perfect for a work lunch, and the portions are mighty generous. Give it a try if you're in a Mediterranean mood.
4 star middle eastern cheap, fast, fresh, and tasty food!
We dined in on a Thursday afternoon. The service was great! Mehdi made sure that all our needs were met by giving helpful recommendations and offering a complimentary dessert! We even got to meet two of his adorable sons!
We got the grape leaves, falafel, chicken schwarma and baklava. Everything was served in generous portions. The falafel was our favorite! They were served hot - Light and crispy on the outside, fluffy and flavorful on the inside.
They have a special every weekday! Thursday is my favorite special. $10.95 for 3 appetizers, a chicken schwarma meal, drink and dessert!
If you want a cheap and delicious meal, you have to try Baba Pita!
Baba Pita is everything Middle Eastern delivery should be: cheap, fast, hot, and delicious.
I'm always on the quest for new Middle Eastern spots (and for Chicago's best hummus), so I snatched up a Groupon to Baba Pita and ordered in late one evening.
Ordered the beef shawarma and chicken kebab plate (stop thinking I'm a fatty--I promise I was sharing). Holy hunks o' meat! For the price, the amount of meat was outstanding. (though I will note that the "chicken kebab" was more like "huge breasts of chicken" but I'm not complaining). Compared to other Middle Eastern places, the accompanying rice pilaf was incredibly tasty. It may the addition of lima beans and a bit of mint, I believe? Not sure, but delish. Hummus and a small salad (again with a fantabulous mint addition) make for lots of food at a reasonable price.
Hummus grade: ehh...3.5. Good, but it could use some more flavor--garlic, perhaps?
Note that if you are using the Groupon, you cannot order online--you must call-in your order. There was a bit of a snafu when I called (they said they were having technical difficulties), but the process of 95% painless. Delivery came within 40 minutes on a Friday night. Score.
Weak balls.
I like my falafel crunchy on the outside, moist and tender on the inside and packed with a garlicky punch. Â The falafel at Baba Pita just doesn't deliver on any of my requirements and that makes me a Sad Mac.
I did, however, like my Fatoush salad. Â They're pretty heavy on the summac, though, so be forewarned! Â Also - The small size Fatoush is teeny tiny. Â Get the large. Â Especially if it's your entree.
Maybe I was really hungry. Maybe I didn't treat you quite as good as I should have. Wait. That's Willie Nelson. As awesome as the Red-Headed Stranger is (Free Willie, for real!), this review isn't about country awesomeness. It's about delicious Middle Eastern eats and complimentary Brisk iced tea (in a can).
For $9.95 (I wouldn't call it 'cheap'), I snagged a chicken shawarma plate with a heap o' meat, hummus, pita bread, salad, and a beverage of my choosing. I was hoping for something from the Nehi family (if you don't know Nehi Peach or Blue Cream, I weep for you), but I settled on Brisk iced tea. It's not my go-to canned iced tea, but the commercials with the clay people worked on me as a child and if presented with the slightly lemony 'brewed' drink, I'll, usually, take it.
After the slightest of waits, I had my takeout order ready to go. I appreciated the heft of the bag. I wasn't getting a small amount of food. For $10, I was getting fed (as it should be). Another thing: my party entered into Baba Pita near closing time. As a rule, I strive to never do this. I used to work fast food. I HATED seeing parties roll up to the front door when I only had fifteen more minutes left to be open. The guys behind the counter showed little to no irritation and served us promptly. That's solid. I don't think I would have been as charitable. Actually, I know I wouldn't have been (I was a teenager; give me a break). The food tasted as good as the restaurant smelled -- and that's VERY good. You've had shawarma before, so I won't bore you with the ohhs and ahhs. But, for service, portion and Brisk iced tea, I was quite impressed. I think you might be as well.
If Colleen C is president of Falafel Club Chicago, then I'm COO. Is that a step up from vice president? I don't know, I kind of feel like "vice president" is becoming a retired term. So old school it's no longer cool... but I digress. What I'm trying to say is, I love falafel. Pita. Hummus. Baba. Tabouleh. Five food groups for me right there!
Speaking of the lovely CC, she was kind enough to bring me a falafel sandwich while we were readying for an event. Big-hearted and thoughtful, yes she is. The pita is a tad on the dry side, but lining it with dreamy hummus definitely helped sweeten the deal. And the falafel are large, lovely and quite moist. Add some tahini to the mix and you'll see a borderline smitten girl for approximately 12 minutes.
Don't forget to check out their specials posted on their Yelp page... wowza!
As president of the Falafel Club Chicago (FCC)...I regret my extended absence, and am now getting back into the swing of things. Ok, I made this org up, but regardless...I am still just as fond of falafel as always, but slipped a bit into some other ethnic fare. I've cheated. I've returned. Forgive me. Accept me with open pita.
Delivery of quite approachable falafel sandwiches at Baba Pita!
Falafel rating: 4 (nice 'n moist!)
Pita rating: 3 (a tad dry)
Tahini rating: 4 (yay, NOT dry!)
Hummus rating: 4 (standard)
Mmmmmm, a go to, most def. Delivery was swift, food all at acceptable temps, and friendly to boot.
Falafel phenom!
Taking more than 90 minutes to deliver food = MEGA FAIL.
Ok. I tried ordering again because I really like their food. It's very good. So I placed an order, and the food came in 20 minutes. BUT IT WAS THE WRONG ORDER. I ordered the chicken schwarma plate, but got 12 falafels instead.
MEGA FAIL x 2.
Many Friday nights, I'm nothing short of exhausted and the thought of going out for dinner, drinks, etc. is daunting. Â Well, last Friday night, http://foodler.com and Baba Pita catered to my lazy, uninspired-to-cook evening into a lovely night of hummus eating and hulu-watching.
One veggie plate for me (hummus, dolma, baba ganoush, falafel and salad) and one chicken kabob sandwich for him, add a side of hummus and you've got a rockin' good Friday night. Â $22 for all that loot? Â Sold. Â Oh yeah, and there were cans of cola involved. Â Free cans of cola. Â Love that.
Our food was ready for pick-up as promised. Â Falafel fell a bit short of my desire because it was a little bit cold, and they must've forgotten to throw pita in. Â (We got two teensy pieces of pita for my veggie plate and a small order of hummus.) Â I don't fault them the cold falafel, that's what you chance when you do the whole "pick up" routine, and forgotten pita once? Â That's OK. Â I'll be back to give them another shot.
The hummus was garlicy and creamy, as it should be, but the baba ganoush had my heart. Â Smoky, creamy, and olive oily, I was scooping it up and eating it with my fork. Â YUM.
Friendly service, too. Â After I placed my online order through foodler, they called to make sure they knew at which location I was picking up my food. Â Nice.

I keep getting sucked into going back to this place because its literally across the street from where I work. The food is still delicious, but the owner just makes the experience so much worse for me.
First of all, when I pay $12.18 for a lunch special that is supposed to come with 2 falafel, DON'T GIVE ME JUST ONE. Also, I get less and less hummus everytime I go, and whatever soup they say comes with the special, it isn't necessarily the soup that you'll get.
Second, the owner emailed me after my last review apologizing for being rude and asking me to come back. So, today, I ordered on the phone. And I could tell it was him on the phone because he was not at all friendly and with every "what else?" I felt like I was bothering him or something.
When I came to pick up my food, he didn't even acknowledge me standing at the counter, or look up, or god forbid.. SMILE. If you don't like people, sir, then get out of customer service! I was the one that said "thank you" when I left as he continued to yell at the nice man that is usually there about some order or delivery or something.
Just rude. And expensive. If I want to splurge on some good food for lunch, please at least be nice to me when I order and pick it up (even if you can't turn off the soap operas so I don't want to eat there.) Also, don't jip me on ONE FALAFEL, and the portion of everything else. You are cheap!
I think I'm done with this place. Even on cold days, if I don't bring my lunch, I'd rather walk a few extra blocks.
The restaurant is tiny and shoddy looking, and every few minutes you think the roof might cave in as the train passes by. The employees are all business, and sometimes it takes forever to get your order. And I suspect that the kitchen isn't exactly spotless.
But I don't care, the food is awesome.
I have found that food comes faster via delivery than waiting for it at the restaurant. Makes no sense, but hey, whatever.
Not the cheapest lunch option, but a ton of food and a can of soda or bottle of water is included. The daily specials are more food than I should ever eat in one sitting, so I avoid them.
I have probably been to Baba Pita 15 times - obviously my initial reaction was this food rocked, but over the past 6 months it has very obviously declined in value.
The customer service has never been above average - but the food certainly tasted better several months ago. I decided to write this more as a warning to the men who own the restaurant: Why has your falafel been extremely dry and tasteless? The hummus portions consistently smaller? Why have both the veggie dolma plate and veggie combo plate had less and less food...I understand food costs are going up - I work in the restaurant business - but the prices have risen TWICE in 6 months - AND the portions are smaller (and not as delicious).
I would recommend this food to anyone who has never experienced good falafel or hummus, that way they have nothing to compare it to....
I went back for my final time last night - ordered because I had hope that the original Baba Pita would return. Never Again.
Upon walking into Baba Pita the last time I visited, I thought I had mistakenly entered someone's house. Â I guess they changed the layout so I got confused. Â Then I took a few steps in and saw two fat cops inhaling some kind of meat. Â The new owner (says he took over six months ago) was very friendly and very confident in his product. Â "You tell me what you think of falafel when you are done," he exclaimed. Â I told him I would. Â
The layout of the fucking joint is straight out of Kabul... in the good days. Â Some crazy ass woven rug-type shit adorns the walls and someone's car seat, removed and folded, was sitting in the front of the restaurant. Â One thing really caught my attention and sticks out in my mind. Â I could swear that a Hispanic lady in the kitchen was wearing a hijab for authenticity purposes. Â I wouldn't put it past the owner. Â He seems to be quite the cunning proprietor poised to take over the world - the world of falafel. Â
When I finally did get my two falafels, 15 minutes had gone by. Â When stacked up against Sultan's time from order to pay, there is no comparison. Â I took my falafels home, opened up and chowed. Â Baba Pita stuffs their pitas to the brink with falafel, unlike Sultan's, and they give you tahini on the side. Â So in total the falafel sandwich consists of crazy amounts of falafel, tomato, lettuce and tahini on the side. Â I got hot sauce on the side as well, but the owner said he only gives it to "picky" customers. Â I guess I was branded correctly. Â
All in all, this ain't Sultan's Market, but it is decent at the very least and with a little bit of time I think the owner with have his kabobs in order.
Be prepared for an extra guest at your table. Â The manager (?) will have a seat while he helps you decide what to order while entertaining you; he's witty and friendly.
I split the "veggie falafel platter" (SEVEN falafel, tahina, hummus, salad) and the "veggie combo platter" (two falafel, two dolma, hummus, baba ganouj, salad, tabouli)
The BABA GANOUJ was really good. Â It's the best I've had in Chicago. Â It has a really nice smoky flavor. Â (Better than Sultan's)
It's super casual and fun. Â Go there!
WOW!!! Finally something in the city that can match up to Pita Inn!!!
We LOVED this place! We actually dined-in instead of delivery and everything - starting with the hummus to the falafel sandwiches were great! The sandwiches were HUGE and CHEAP! And the people were FRIENDLY and the place was CLEAN!!!
great job!!!
I've traveled in the Middle East and know what food should taste like, and I've lived in Humboldt Park and know what Sultan's is like. Â It's on this basis that I was slightly worried about our first order from Baba Pita.
Let's talk about Baba Ganouj for a minute, ok? Â I've always hated the version you get in the US- the pasty purpley stuff that looks somewhat like hummous. Â In the Middle East, baba ganouj is chunky with bits of real eggplant, onion, and peppers in it and it's delicious. Â The baba ganouj at Baba Pita isn't exactly the real stuff I'm used to, a little more creamy, but still has those chunks of eggplant in it and it's great. Â This is the best I've had this side of the ocean, and I'm excited to have found it.
The falafel are heavy on the parsley and green on the inside but more delicate and better-made than Sultan's I'd say. Â Sultan's wins in the lentil soup department, though, since the Baba stuff showed up with not enough lentils and too much broth. Â The yalengee/dolmadakia/grape leaves didn't seem home made but were tasty, and the tabouleh was clearly freshly made.
Overall, the stuff was fresh, promptly delivered, well-made and nearly authentic. Â They screwed up our beverage order, though- bringing not one coke one diet coke but one diet iced tea. Â Which was odd. Â We order- haven't eaten in.
