Just saw a giant, black RAT run across the bar while eating.
I didn't scream, I jumped and nicely told the waitress what was going on. We then decided it was time to leave. The waitress brought us the check for the whole price. After asking for a discount she then went to talk to the bar tender who came back and only offered us our ONE round of drinks for free, but still charged us for all the food we ordered.
Needless to say, I will never be going back. Most disgusting thing I have ever witnessed was seeing a rat in a restaurant you are paying to eat at then not getting comped or even offered a discount after your experience.
Kinda trashy. I didn't eat here but came with about 10 friends for drinks and dancing. Overall everyone was in good spirits but some of the other patrons were really douchy with a lot of unnecessary attitude. It reminded me of an old frat party with a bunch of guys who don't end up actually graduating. There are much better places.
Review Source:Hmm..what can I say about bar 35 that people don't already know? Probably nothing. Therefore, think I'll just explain my experiences through my eyes and hopefully be able to hit all the important points that people look for when reading reviews. Okay..
1st experience -
It was a first Friday and one of my friends wanted to go because one of his friends had a piece of art work that she was displaying. I am normally not a first Friday kind of person but agreed to go in support of a friend of a friend. I always heard about bar 35 but never knew where it was since I was living under rock. Lo and Behold, I found out it was LOCATED in C-town (trying to sound like the hipsters) aka chinatown. Since the art show finished and it was still early we decided to check it out. The line was really long to get in. When we finally got in, the place was packed like a girls luggage and no real place to chill. The ENVIRONMENT was pretty dark in there. Similar to femme nu. That can be pretty dangerous when trying to hook up with someone and then the lights come on. I like the huge TV in there as well showing music videos (this time). Overall, I liked the look of it for the first experience.
2nd experience -
It was a Saturday and the same friend had a friend in town from Australia that he wanted to take around. Line was not as long this time but it was still pretty busy inside. Since there was still no place to chill in the area my friend says, lets go check the back patio area. I said "There's a back?" He said, "Yes with another bar" The back area is actually more of my style. It's an open area with Christmas looking style lights which makes it more well lit. So now that we found a seat, I wanted a beer. I asked the bartender girl for a Coors light. She responds laughing (uh ohh.. high school flashback) and says we don't have that kind of beer. Ohh yeah.. forgot that domestic beer isn't hip enough.. my bad. So I said, "Just give me whatever you recommend" She comes back with Hoegarden which is a really good beer actually. Lot more calories but really good.
3rd experience -
Came with my wife for happy hour. Now this time the place was as vacant as the beach during a tsunami warning. The ENVIRONMENT was still dark and the TV was still there. This time showing the movie bad boys. You know the one where Tea Leoni had black hair. Anyway, this was the perfect opportunity to try their famous PIZZA! The happy hour here is just okay IMO. It's drinks only. They don't have food anymore on HH. They have martinis and stuff for like 3 dollars and some change. I don't drink martinis because I want to keep my man card but its good for females. I was also able to realize they have a hugangous beer selection here, minus the non hipster beers AKA Domestic beer. That is a huge plus in my book. So we order the sweet bangkok pizza. At first, I ordered it because I liked the name. It actually turned out to be really good. It's not the best pizza I ever had which was really really good but what I liked about this pizza was how thin the crust was. It was potato chip thin. No wonder people like it. The crust is so thin that its almost like a low carb pizza. As for the taste, the sweet bangkok is very sweet indeed.
Overall, this place is about a 3.5 for me but if the pizza is good then it must be rounded to 4.
Good priced Happy Hour drinks and not so bad priced thin crust pizza, but bad management. Â Went to Happy Hour last week and at our tables there were little flyers showcasing their 8 beer samplers with pizza for $20. Â When the bill came, they charged $25. Â I inquired our waitress and told me to ask the manager. Â If the manager just apologized for the misprint and said hope i had a good time - I would of been fine.
HOWEVER, manager was so rude. He claimed it was an old flyer - Three years to be exact (lies! i doubt you have flyers from 3 years ag). I said well for your information it's sitting all over your lounge tables, you shouldn't be leaving them out. Then he raised his voice and said " ARE YOU SAYING YOU ONLY DID THE DEAL BECAUSE IT WAS $20!!" I said yes. and he's like fine- here's $5! So he knew he was swindling everyone because most people don't look at their bill too closely. It wasn't about the $5, it was the principle!
There were about 10 people in our group and 5 of us who opted for the beer/pizza promotion. Â Looks like they tried to sneak in at least $25 from our group alone, who know what other false pricing they do.
Been coming here for years and it seems like it never changes, well a few changes have taken place. They recently renovated their back deck area which is much more spacious and comfortable.
The pizza and french fries are the best. Make sure you try the different sauces they have for the french fries. If you dont like loud music bring some ear plugs because the music bounces off the walls and it stays pretty loud.
The bartenders are super fast and efficient even when the bar is packed to the max. There is a huge selection of beers to choose from that are all imports. They have a great happy hour.
Ended class early. Someone needed to wind down. Yelp'd and googled places near campus that had happy hour. I'm no drinker so I knew she'd know the better choice.
A bit of a walk, especially with your school materials.
Inside it was dark.
I liked their music selection, not really the videos / images that they played along with them...
Happy hour until closing time.
The bartender was energetic. There were a few people but thinking it was during happy hour, I thought there'd be more. I guess not.
Found out there's a VIP room at the back along with a bathroom.
Ordered a Sunny Side Up. Too strong for me. I just shouldn't be drinking alcohol at all. Split fries. Wanted some pizza, heard it was expensive for the size they have it. Our waitress came by to check up on us once in a while.
The couches they had. I liked.
Ended up here a few times on my trip. Although I did not try the pizza, it was available. Pizza ovens inside the Bars/Lounges seem to be a popular combination here.
Got pretty packed at night, there is also an outdoor deck area. Like other reviews, it is very dark inside. Got a tad hot as well.
3.5 Stars
Woo Bar 35!
I love this bar, so many memories were made here.. LOl, birthday wise!
Their happy hour is awesome lasts till 8 pm, which was great when I used to work right around the corner. Great selection of alcohol, (over 100s of international beers!)
Their food is awessssommmme! Although the amount of furikake fries has gone down, its still delicious. I recommend their garlic and kimchee aioli's! Their pizza's a exquisit, the Gyro is one of my favorites. But all of them are really great.
The atmosphere is really chill, lights are turned down low and the music selection is great. The back area is open and outdoors, they don't have a huge selection of alcohol as they do as the inside, but still great. The bartenders are quick and friendly, also the waitresses. Never had a problem with them and George is awesome.
Sometimes they have some interesting things they play on the projector, really random at times lol. But nonetheless great bar. Find either street parking, or park in one of the municipal parking structures. One of the better ones are located on South Beretania or Smith Street (Marin Tower), if you park after 5 it's $3 till 12am.
Tons of beer to choose from and the happy hours drink specials are very reasonable. Oh, and the pizzas are a good starter during happy hour. Get on the email list to get the invites to their special events. They have a "backyard" with a bar and decent seating for groups and their booths inside are cool and comfortable.
Review Source:Before a couple weeks ago, I've never come here other than for First Friday, which doesn't shed the best light on this place. Â Being uber packed and hot/sweaty with a super busy bar and club bumpin' music might serve its purpose for First Friday, but that's really the only view I had of this place until just recently.
Contrary to its slightly trashy First Friday appearance, Bar 35 is actually a pretty chill yet classy Downtown bar with an awesome Happy Hour drink menu!
During Happy Hour, beers are $3 and martini cocktails are $3.75. Â There are soooo many beers at this place I couldn't even get through the whole menu. Â I didn't try any beers because the cocktail menu was so intriguing! Â Everything on the menu had some funky name (I had the Berry Asian, Miso Horny, and Domo Arigato; my friends and I definitely had a kick when ordering these drinks!) with such unique mixes of vodkas and juices! Â Aside from the Domo Arigato which had a very strong alcohol taste, all the martinis our party tried were very delicious and "effective"! Â Such a great deal!!!
(I Am) Berry Asian - http://www.yelp.com/biz_…
Only negative is that Happy Hour menu for food is pretty small and only lasts from 5-6pm. Â Coming here with friends, we just ordered some small bites, but mostly just ordered drinks :P. Â Luckily there are a few restaurants in the area that open pretty late for post-drinking munchies!
I'll definitely be back for delicious cocktails with their famous pizzas!

The French Kiss pizza here is AMAZING! Â Any place that offers brie as a cheese option is probably good in my books. Â Really nice outdoor lounge area and often good music/music videos. Â Wouldn't necessarily recommend this place on a First Friday evening, however, as it gets crowded.
Review Source:Love this place! Â Went here Friday with a big group and it was not too busy. Â We got the tables behind the beaded curtain which was perfect for my group if 15-20. Â We had two pizzas too even though we just came from dinner- the French kiss pizza is bomb! Â I found a new favorite drink: the strawberry shortcake yum! Great service, great laid back atmosphere, not too busy and rambunctious on a Friday-I like that. Â Didn't make it for happy hour on my bday but when I do go- their skyy martinis are a great deal. Â Tuesday is 25$ for pizza and wine I think I'll have to see what that's all about!
Review Source:yep, best pizza on the island. (i haven't tried the dude's pizza from the portable oven yet).
Wednesday beer sampling nights are pretty fun. met the president of rogue at their tasting a few months ago, if you're familiar with rogue then you'll probably enjoy the 8 beers that were on offer.
yeah, that thin crust pizza that comes with the tasting is super good.
i think this place played a brothel on hawaii five-0 too, interesting background note.
I admit it...
I have my Barfly Badge. I've got my Big Night Badge as well...Nighthawk, yep...Happy Hour Power...CHECK!
I enjoy sharing a drink or two with my dear friends... so sue me!
LOL
Bar35 was not so much of a planned excursion. And I definitely did not plan to visit on a First Friday night. But when your BFF, Richard K. asks you to have a pau hana drink, you MUST say yes!
Pizza...meh...
Drinks and vibe...on this night, FABULOUS!
Love the outdoor bar and lounge area.
I have been here a few times before but never have I had such a great experience. Definitely had to YELP it out! Seems it must have been a great place to go as we were able to meet up with Mark H. there as well!
:)
I was worried that our last stop in Hawaii would be a bust, but after we started our trip down the Wednesday beer tasting, the servers loosened up, and Roman Holiday started playing on the projector, we were in for a fun night.
It's a pretty good deal - 8 samples for $25, plus ample explanation from the resident beer gurus and free pizza samples as they come around. If you're thinking on subsisting on those free samples, I would urge you to order an entire pie for yourself and a buddy because as the crowd builds the samples are harder to come by.
The pizzas are pretty decent, but not as good as the name "Valentini Gourmet Fusion Pizza" would like you to believe. Nice tavern-style crust and some thematic ingredients that place uniqueness over everything else. Which isn't to say the Sweet Bangkok's sausage, sriracha, and cilantro wasn't good, but pizza creativity is abound in 2013 without the need to attach "fusion" and "gourmet" to everything like it's 1992.
Great selection of beers and I loved the pizza's!. Â Pupu style cuts makes it easy eat and enjoy. I really enjoyed the patio area, comfortable seating surrounded by bamboo and soft warm lighting. Good place for larger groups to gather.
Service overall was pretty good and friendly.
Street Parking or Municipal Lot located a block away.
My dear Yelp son Thomas O is moving to California and we decided to throw him one last grand hurrah at Bar 35! We had originally planned on throwing this party at a sushi bar but he's quite the popular yelper, our guest list expanded past the restaurant's capacity. Luckily Bar 35 was more than happy to accommodate our large group fete. I'd thrown my boyfriend's birthday party at Bar 35 a few years back and remembered what an awesome time we had!
I haven't had a downtown booze fest in awhile and was pleasantly surprised to see that they've reconfigured the patio area. It has a more enclosed feel which makes it easier for guests to interact. I reserved the patio and it fit our 40+ guests that came in and out throughout the night perfectly. Everyone ordered pizza and drinks on their own, and the waitresses were great about splitting the tabs. If you've ever hosted a large group gathering you know that some places aren't always very accommodating but we didn't have any issues.
They have an awesome happy hour at Bar 35 which includes $3.75 Skyy cocktails and $4 beers. The drink menu is ridiculously extensive and dare I say there's almost too many beers to choose from? This is one of the few places I know of that serves Frambois Lambic which is a sweet bottled beer that I adore. None of my friends had ever tried it and all the girls enjoyed the samples I distributed. Their super thin crispy gourmet pizzas are my favorite and our group ate bites of the French Kiss, Sweet Bangkok and Italian Perdition. A super spot to throw a semi-private event and Bar 35 is definitely on the top of my list for future group gatherings!
Aw I'm sad this place has really gone downhill. Other than First Fridays this place it's so empty that when you walk in you think "oh, are they open?" Service is okay but I feel like the whole bar could you use a really good cleaning. It smells like urine in the bathroom... and outside of it. And since certain bartenders left the drinks are so weak I have a hard time even paying happy hour prices for a martini glass full of juice. This place has seen better days. Like sometime in 2010.
Review Source:Came by with a girlfriend on a Saturday night - more specifically, the Saturday before Christmas. I'm guessing it was a slow night, because my impression of Bar 35 was that it would be crowded and well, teeming with nightlife. On this particular night, it definitely wasn't crowded, but still pretty sick.
This is the epitome of how I like my bars - not prissy by any means, but comfortable and laid back with just the right amount of grunge. Located right off of King Street, this neighborhood spot is convenient and walking distance from other mainstays like the Manifest (literally, steps). The music was a great fusion of 90's hip hop, seamlessly mixed with top 40 and a few throwback gems. Perfect. We were able to sit at a table, which I imagine is a long shot on its busier nights, and order an entree in addition to our drinks.
We got the vegetarian pizza, which was tasty and well prepared. I would order it again but am not compelled to rave about it as "the best" by any means. As far as drinks, we decided on the Beer-Mosa and Cherry Blossom Princess. The consensus was the drinks weren't as strong as we would have liked, as we were able to throw back three each - a very unusual occurrence.
Service was okay, but were so engrossed in conversation that it didn't bother us. Prices are manageable.
Upon reviewing their menu online, I'm impressed with their extensive beer list, including quite a few Belgian brews (my ultimate favorite and guilty pleasure). I would definitely come back, hopefully on a busier, more high-energy night.
If I were still a Hawaii resident, I imagine I'd frequent a place exactly like this.
Decided to revisit this place. I really appreciated that the owner contacted me to make it right, though I am writing this re-review by my own volition.
Came here last Friday with a group of out of town friends and everyone seemed to enjoy it. The drinks and music were good, almost reminded me of the clubs in LA minus the over-crowding, which is always a plus. We sat on a few of the couches and although we already ordered drinks from the bar, the waitress did come by to check if we needed refills, which was nice of her. Saw some food come out, and I'll definitely have to order next time I visit!
Came here on a Thursday night at around 8ish.
Atmosphere: Love the setup and the vibe. Awesome atmosphere.
Music- Even though it was early and the place was just getting going, the DJ was spinning a really good set. Reading the descriptions on the other nights, I definitely want to come back during the week.
Service - our Waitress was cool and efficient. Didn't give off that "fake nice" vibe that some waitresses have. Just just genuinely seemed like she enjoyed her job.
Drinks - Had a couple martinis that tasted great. I hear the beer menu is amazing too.
Food - menu is a little weak, and I don't eat wheat, so I didn't try anything.
Price - Our drinks were dirt cheap! There's some more "expensive" drinks on the menu, but they offer plenty of specials for people who don't want to break the bank. Â 4 martinis and some chicken nuggets for less than $25, whatt? Awesome!
I'll definitely be back.
After watching Raw and the Cooked at the Hawaii International Film Festival, playing at the Dole Cannery Theaters, we decided to hit our favorite water hole, Bar 35. Â This was my first outing at Bar 35 on a Thursday, and normally hit the Happy Hour or the wonderful beer sampling on Wednesday. Â
The crowd is definitely smaller and younger after 8:30 pm, leaving many open tables to choose from. Â I was also pleased that there wasn't anyone in line for pizzas, so we placed an order for the Italian Perdition, thin crusted pizza for $13. Â The chef was also kind enough to walk over our pizza when it was done. Â We loved the pizza, super thin, crunchy crust, Italian sausage, olives, anchovies, savory tomato sauce, lightly covered with mozzarella cheese.
Drinks
Unfortunately, there weren't any drink specials and happy hour was over. Â The waitress initially thought that there was a Sam Adams seasonal draft beer, but came back disappointed and offered a Mehana Volcano red draft. Â This beer was smooth and lightly carbonated, caramel , maybe a hint of coffee. Â This went well with the saltiness of the Italian sausage from the pizza.
By the way, they have an incredible assortment of 150 beers on the menu from 21 different countries. Â I highly recommend that you participate in their Wednesday beer sampling for $25, which provides 8 different beer samples and some of their yummy pizzas. Â
They were just setting up the instruments for the live band when we were leaving the place, so can't share a review of the music. Â Had to work the next morning, so we will try to review the entertainment on the weekend!
31 YELPS REVIEW CHALLENGE #18/31
I live only a few blocks away from Bar 35 and love going to the beer tastings on Wednesday nights. Â One of the best drinking deals in Honolulu and not to be missed!!!
Every week the beer tasting has a unique theme which is typically seasonal (for example, Mexican beers during the week of Cinco de Mayo). Â Sampling eight different beers for $20 is a great deal in Honolulu, and I'm always amazed that this place isn't more crowded. Â During the beer tasting, one or two beer experts roam around discussing the beers while bartenders hand out free samples of flatbread pizza. Â Every one of the pizzas I've tried here has been excellent and is even better when paired with the seasonal beers. Â The Sweet Bangkok pizza is my personal favorite.
I personally prefer drinking here when the crowd is relatively light on weeknights and tend to stay away rather than wait in line for the zoo that Bar 35 turns into on a First Friday. If you're looking for more of a club scene, however, First Friday at Bar 35 is where it's at. Â It gets very crowded inside but the outdoor patio in the back is usually more chill and tends to be the quickest place to buy a drink. Â
Either way you can't go wrong with Bar 35!!! Definitely check it out, at least for the beer tasting.
I only come here for the beer tasting, and it's freaking great!
Imaging this..... You get try 8 different beers that a related by a specific theme for the week, while one of their beer experts come around and talks about the beer. Â He can tell you about where the beer is from, what kind of flavors it will have and why, and even the history about beers. Â You also get free pizza. Â This is not your typical pizza. Â This is some freaking creative, delicious, thin crust pizza. Â Oh the 9th beer you get is the one you choose from the 8 they gave you.
Awesome right? $20 on Wednesday night. Â Come early cause it is usually packed.
If you didn't eat dinner before you came, they have delicious fries with different sauces, and other appetizers.
Check this place out, for their large selection of beers, their food, or beer tasting!
Neat venue... interesting crowd... GREAT martini specials!
I've only been here a couple times... I kinda feel like I'm not really 'hip' enough to make it a second home, but after a couple awesome martinis, I tend to forget about that part, lol
I usually don't drink fruity drinks (give me Jack, 151 in shots or with Coke, or Patron... or beer) but here I have a taste for the naughty-named concoctions: "Loosey-Liu" was last week's choice...
Bar service has been hit or miss for me. I'm not a regular here, and the bartenders are very engaged with regular patrons, so each time I sat at the bar, they didn't check in with me as much as I'd have liked. I may have spent more $$ there, had they stopped to ask if I wanted or needed anything. Nursing an empty glass is a bit of a buzzkill lol...
They also have the Patio Bar, but to me that area just gets too crowded, and it rains too much in Chinatown for me to enjoy it. Or at least it's rained every time I've been to Bar 35.
Haven't tried their food yet... the friend I usually go with always wants to eat somewhere else cheaper... maybe I just need a new friend, huh? Any takers??? :* lol
Long story short... still need more experiences here to be able to give them 5 stars, but for the most part: so far, so good!
My fiance surprised me with a birthday party here. Loved the atmosphere of the bar as there are different sides of it - one was a lounge type room, the regular big open spaced bar as you walk in, and we had the reserved outdoor patio area.
The service is quick and friendly and there are tons of beer options. They carried my favorite - Newcastle, and my fiance got his Tiger beer.
The pizza is amazing! Yummy thin crust pizzas with different toppings. My favorite was the Italian Perdition which was topped with anchovies, Italian sausage, and olives. We also got the Black Forest and French Kiss pizza. All delicious! There are many more pizzas to choose from but we were stuffed. I would definitely go back here again.
Parking can be a hassle but we just parked in the municipal parking lot on Maunakea St and walked over a short distance. We stayed from 7pm-1100pm and it only cost $3.00.
After hearing about this place I definitely had to give it a try. And when better than on a surprise Birthday Party for my Mongoose!!
Started e-mailing the bar (Miki) and making arrangements to have our party in the Patio Bar section. Â Upon our arrival, they had a table in the back for any gifts and a little section reserved for us.
The atmosphere was amazing! Just enough lighting to see everyone, yet dark enough to enjoy the night sky. Â Luckily the rain held off for us. The bar in the back was awesome and our server, Eve, kept the drinks coming all night for us. (catching the tail-end of happy hour was a plus) Â They even brought out a shot for Misty and placed a candle in the center held by toothpicks! (clever!!) Â So we sang happy birthday and downed our shots!
The really awesome part about this night was one.....for the rest of the month, Misty and her guest can receive a special deal from the bar. Â (If you want to know....book a party!)
The second.....like everyone else says.....THE PIZZA!!!!!
We had the ITALIAN PERDITION: Imported Italian Sausage, Olive, Anchovy, Tomato Sauce, and Mozzarella Cheese. I know, I know.....ANCHOVY!! But honestly, you can't even taste it and no, I didn't see that it had anchovy. :)-
Then came the BLACK FORREST and one other....I forget. After a while the night became a blur! Â Aaah yes, the French Kiss!
All-in-all though...this place was awesome on helping make it a perfect night! So good that after closing the tab, Eve deserved a generous gratuity.
This was a hidden treasure, surrounded by a bums and trannys. Â So if you've ever lived on O'ahu, you know that Hotel street is a dump. Â It goes through Chinatown and not always the most pleasant places to visit. Â Well, I gotta say that this place is worth the walk through the slums of Hawaii for!
The place has a very trendy bohemian chill vibe. Â Theres a brick wall with a long bar, couches everywhere, live bands and another seating area in the back. Â
We got the nuggets, fries and pizza for food and it was good. Â Thin crust pizza, crispy fries and juicy nuggets. Â
My friends and I had a mini reunion, some of us reuniting after 9 years! Â I thought this was the perfect place to go to for this celebration. Â When I'm in town again, I'm going to make sure this place is on the agenda and so should you!
It's been a while since I have been here. We hung out at a friend's place nearby where I had a few drinks and needed to find some grub. Truly I have no idea why we went to Bar 35. Oh wait! Their amazing pizza.
We literally paid cover and walked through the horrible crowd just to grab a pizza. I remember when I came here a while ago. Love their selection of beers. Anyway there were no seats (obviously it was a Friday night) and packed. We walked into that little hallway where they sold those amazing pizzas. My husband quickly ordered and then I finally thought to myself. Oh my gosh, how barbaric of me! No seats! No space! I need to eat this standing up, dolled up, in the hallway that everyone walked through. Who gives a flying! We ate it in a matter of minutes. Inhaled our margherita pizza standing in the hallway while I ate as fast as I could so no one recognizes me. Mmm! Scrumptious!
George, Stephanie, Gretchen and Eddy are probably the best bar staff in the state of Hawaii! Â I do not believe I have ever been treated sooooo well by a staff after only comming in a few times!!
The happy hour specials are awesome and the bar presents a neat and clean atmosphere! Â $3.50 skyy + flavors. Just about anyone can enjoy that! Â The beer specials are dependent on what they have on tap, always changing, always amazing!
If you are looking for a chill, non hipster bar in C-town, this is your place!
Bar 35 is awesome any night but Wednesdays are my favorite! Every Wednesday they have beer and pizza tastings. For $20 you get to taste 5 beers and then pick which one you liked the best to have again for your 6th. Each beer comes with a small slice of pizza.
I'm not big on pizza so I opt for the crispy chicken nuggets and french fries. There are about 10 different sauces to pick from and I've tried most of them and they are all delicious!! I recommend getting 4 sauces or so and having a sauce tasting while you are at it!
There is lots of parking in the municipal lots or street parking if you're feeling lucky.
