Terrible service. I am under the impression that BarFly might be going out of business because they couldn't serve dinner. We had reservations for 7:30pm, ordered drinks at 7:40 & chips and guacamole. Server didn't come back until 8:00p and still no chips. Ordered dinner at 8:00p (filet, bass, and etc). Chips came out at 8:20...almost 40 minutes after we ordered. The manager explained that they were under staffed and behind. We ended up canceling our dinner order when we were told it wouldn't make the table until after 9pm. We went somewhere else. Common courtesy would be to close your doors if you don't have staff to serve or at least communicate that it may be a 3 hour dining experience. Wasted night at a horrible place. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!
Review Source:Went here since it was one of the few restaurants that actually services lunch food on a Sunday, instead of forcing me to eat brunch.
The calamari was alright.
The hummus and falafel wrap was decent.
The acoustic guitar player sounded like Stevie Nicks, and was probably the only good thing about this place.
The couches inside are probably cool if you want to watch a sports game on the tv.
Everything on the menu sounds delicious, but in reality, a place that doesn't focus on one food, usually does okay on everything rather than great in one particular category.
I'm not sure where else to go for lunch on a Sunday in La Jolla, but I definitely know on a Saturday I'd check out someplace else.
This place is really nice. I went during the week in the afternoon and received great service. My bartender Mandie was phenomenal. Took great care of me and was very friendly. If you go there and she is behind the bar have no fear you will get the best service.
The staff was great and this place is a good time. They have salsa nights and the band is great.
I think it could be a great place if they put more work into advertising or something.
The pastry place "Aroma" there was awesome. I had great tiramisu and creme brulee. Everything in there is great as well. So if you get a drink at the bar ask Mandie for something from Aroma. She knows what they have and whats good. So if you go in there definitely try something from there as well. They are soooooo good!!!
Barfly and its sister cafe next door, Aroma, are a great - sometimes untapped - spot in La Jolla. Both have outdoor seating, which is tough to find in the Village. Indoors Barfly has some comfortable couches and nice TVs if you're inclined to watch a game. They're still trying to find their mojo I think because at various times they have tried everything from rock, jazz, and even salsa bands to attract a crowd. Next door Aroma has delectable desserts and coffee at the counter. Both use the same food menu and it's awesome. It's like a book. I spend 20 minutes trying to decide what to eat each time I go and I've never been disappointed. You can get everything from a salmon salad to a panini to pizza to steak to some sweet Mediterranean dishes. Go check it out. You'll enjoy it.
Review Source:Review on Happy Hour Only.
My friend Lily and I stopped in for a quick drink before one of the elite events right down the street. Â
Service was great, hostess very nice and the bartender was nice too, and turns out she's a fellow elite! Awesome!
We ordered two beers and an order of wings (we were starving!). Â On the HH menu, I believe they were $4 bucks for 4 wings. Â Good size, nice amount of sauce, tasted good. Â I thought it was worth it for being in La Jolla. Â
I think we got out of there for under $15 for drinks and a quick bite.
The hubby and I had a wonderful dinner at Barfly to celebrate my bday. Â
The menu was large and very diverse. Â Diversity in a menu always makes me a little nervous, after all there are those people that love the Cheesecake Factory and then there is me. Â I typically prefer places that have one genre of food and recreate that genre very well. Â Barfly was a pleasant surprise in this area. Â We ordered something from each region (Italian, Greek and American) off the menu and everything was delicious. Â The strawberry shortcake is a MUST HAVE. Â The food was so good in fact that we returned for breakfast the next morning (sorry Cottage, we cheated on you).
The outdoor patio created a great dining experience on the beautiful La Jolla night. Â We were having dinner so we opted away from the lounge seats with the fire pits (I will save that for a night with a bottle of wine). Â There was a band playing live music inside with the windows opened up for us to hear. Â
With all of the higher end dining choices in La Jolla, it's nice to now have a place to go to that is more mid-range without compromising taste.
We went here on a Saturday night to watch the end of the Ohio State and Wicheta State game because we liked the beer list. Â Well many of the bars were not available. The TV's were abundant, the service attentive, but the food was pretty bad. Horrible eggplant dip, stale fries and frozen fish for the fish and chips. You can tell the manager/owner is probably more concerned with the bottom line than fresh well prepared food.
Review Source:Don't be deceived by the terrible name of this restaurant! It should be called "Come see our gigantic dinner menu full of unique and tasty dishes!!!"
Great Coca Cola chicken. Quality pizzas and salads. Avocado eggrolls that will FLOOR you. Seriously - I dare you to choose the teriyaki sauce over the celantro when you are dipping these sexy lil dynomites. They're equally awesome!!
They also serve rarely seen menu items like Beef Stroganoff. And it's actually good! You can find everything here from steaks to burgers to Med/Greek to salads to paninis to pizzas. A real American experience!!!
Four stars only because this place does not try to be 5 Stars. The prices are too reasonable and the name "Barfly" is terrible. I mean hello!!! You guys are in La Jolla where people literally use cash to put beneath their Ferrari so the oil doesn't drip onto their plate brass driveway!!! They're not going out to a "bar" where common folk hang out. Much less flies!!!
Keep your menu and prices, but rename your place to "Brick and Porter: The most expensive dining experience in La Jolla" and charge $100 alone just for the reservation. Your business will explode!!!
This review is for the bar not the restaurant as we didn't eat anything.
We got here around 8pm on a Friday night after dinner for some drinks at the bar. Â It was clear as we sat down that the bartender was extremely busy, even though there were only 10 people sitting at the bar. Â All of the servers were using the solo bartender as a service bar for the tables in the restaurant. Â It took 15 minutes to get our first round of drinks. Â The bar was completely understaffed and it was clear who was taking priority and it wasn't the patrons at the bar. Â
The worst part of the night was when we ordered a few overpriced glasses of scotch whisky. Â There was one pour left in the bottle of Dalwhinnie 15. Â After drinking half the glass of scotch I noticed 6 dead flies at the bottom of the glass. Â I told the bartender, the drink was taken off our tab and we paid and left disgusted. Â
We will not be going back.
I've only been for the unce-unce side of barfly so it was interesting to see it in the "daylight."
comfy booths along the walls, tall bar stools or regular table seating in the middle.
the drinks packed a whallop! Â whomever is the bartender during the day should teach the one at night. Â the strawberry margarita was mostly rita! Â
- had the avocado eggrolls which is fat with a thin crispy roll. Â they say avocado is good fat so they can't be tha-at bad for you.
- the chicken shawarma was so-so. Â hummus was good but it didn't go that well with the chicken.
whoot! whoot!  you get a freebie pastry from café aroma if you check in on yelp.
overall, the food was ok, our server was super friendly and a-mazing. Â she really made the experience great and bumps it up a star.
I have now visitted Barfly on 5 different occasions. Â I have only gone to eat a meal, not to the club. Â So, my review is solely based on the food, cocktails, and service to go along with it. Â Prices are very reasonable as well, especially for La jolla
Atmosphere: I have sat both inside and out on the patio. I loved both! The patio has a few "lounge" style tables with fire pits in the center. Seating was comfy, atmosphere relaxing and pleasant. Â Highly recommend for a romantic dinner or a dinner with friends (I have done both).
Service: I have never had any issue with service. Â It is top notch! Â Drinks never went unfilled and food, drinks, and other requests have always been brought in a timely, efficient manner! Â I even met the GM and both owners of the establishment. Â All were proffessional, kind and helpful! Â Can't go wrong with that!!
Food: Â Let me just say YUM!!!! This place has it all from burgers to pastas to fresh fish. Â Great looking salads and some middle eastern surprises like hummus, falafal, kabobs and more! Â My favoriet appetizer is the Caprese and there is a pizza dough appetizer with a different name that is TO DIE FOR! Â As far as main dishes, the filet mignon stroganoff with NOODLES is by far my favorite. Â I tried it with both rice and noodles and, although both are very good, I prefer noodles. Â i also loved the tequila chicken pasta, pasta primavera with chicken, the mahi mahi and seabass! Â All portions are great size and beautiful presentation. Â Never had a bad meal and I suspect I never will. Â
Cocktails: Â I love a good cocktail! Who doesn't. Â I have had a bit of everything here: beer, captain morgan and 7up, martinis, cosmos and a few of their specialty drinks. Â All have been plenty strong! Â My favorite: La Jolla Lemonade!! Â Delish!! Â
Come check this place out! You will be glad you did!
Douche bag central in La Jolla!
Came here with a group of friends for some dancing, and was blown away at the sheer number of DB's present. In addition, there was a $10 cover at the door, really? There were no lines, and the club was pretty empty.
The dance floor is a version of a junior high dance, where all the girls danced together in the middle of the dance floor and all the DB guys stand around the dance floor gawking at the girls. There were no interactions between the 2 gender groups! There was 2 stripper poles mounted on platforms, and the gogo dancers were pretty hot BUT couldn't dance at all - very typical of the anorexic chicks of socal. However, the bouncers would not let any girl dance on the pole, wtf? This is a dance club, not a strip joint where only hired strippers can dance on the pole!
Hells to the NO!
This review is for Barfly the night club, not the restaurant or food.
1 Star for good music. Â Which was a mix of 80s,90s dance at first and transitioned nicely into newer dance stuff. Â If you're into House/Techno/Electronica - pass.
1 Star for our server Maria who took care of our table. Â She was like a helicopter hovering and always in eye sight or in ear shot in case we needed.
Beyond these 2 saving graces, this place would've gotten 0 Stars. Â The service otherwise Barfly was atrocious. Â I mean shockingly bad. Â The primary culprit:
Stephen Gordon the Director of VIP. Â For someone whose function is to take care of guests, be the point person for guest relations, et al Steven was diplorable. Â We felt more persona non grata than actual VIP.
There are some things an establishment cannot control. Â They can't control the two short chicks in knee high boots, in ill-fitting three sizes too tight outfits dry humping themselves on the dance floor for example. Â
They can control honoring the bottle service deal that was worked out beforehand. Â They can control how their security people talks to its guests - as in not talk to guests like they're idiots. Â They can control the weak pours on their $12 drinks, with bottom shelf booze. Â They can control when a guest has lost an expensive camera and is frantically looking for it, yelling annoyingly that they might call. Â It wasn't Barfly's fault the camera was lost. Â However, it would've been courteous of him to act like he gave a crap.
I rarely write bad reviews as I believe in that old saying "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." Â But I'm making an exception in this case.
I went dancing with a group of friends a couple of weeks ago at Barfly, celebrating a birthday with bottle service at the tables edging the dance floor, which was really nice. I have no complaints about the service or the decor because, really, do all restaurants and dance clubs need to look alike? Of course not, that would be boring.
So aside from a non-level spot on the dance floor, Barfly is a pretty decent place to go dancing with your friends, and we all loved not having to spend a half hour trolling for parking like we do downtown.
The only complaint I have is with the music. Other reviewers have mentioned a good mix of dance music, but not on the night we were there. 99% of what the DJ played were Rap songs with a beat which is nearly impossible to dance to. My friends and I are semi-professional dancers who can dance to just about anything, but this stuff really tried our patience as we sat through song after song waiting for good dance songs to come up, the kind you would expect to hear in a dance club. Eventually, we and the other bar patrons drank enough to get out on the floor, but except for the occasional semi-pop song, it was tough trying to dance to that stuff.
On the bright side, it was kind of fun watching all these people who fit the La Jolla demographic trying to imitate the hand gestures and body postures they'd seen on Rap videos! LOL!!!
This place was so-so. I came with a large group in order to celebrate New Year's eve. We had a 4 course dinner at the attached restaurant: Aroma. Food was O.K., service was lacking.
Skip ahead to the club: packed, somewhat out dated, yet acceptable blend of banal hip-hop and pop music. Lots of ill-mannered hoochies flooding the floor - which is good or bad, depending upon what you're looking for. In no way am I trying to be a hater, as hoochies are not in and of themselves a bad thing, but an ill mannered hoochie is another breed altogether. Migrating in stampedes, these unruly beasts may quickly arouse the most surly displeasure of the surrounding population. But I digress..
We never received the champagne toast included in the price of our event entrance - chalk it up to the consistently subpar service. Bottom line: the vibe here was completely tepid, nothing to write home about. I could easily recommend 10 other establishments in San Diego to visit before this one.
Like the atmosphere here. Felt date like when I went. We were seated outside and if it's a nice night out, I'd recommend it. Also, ask to be seated next to a fire pit if possible. It's pretty watching the flames.
The dish I had was pretty good. I believe it was the chicken tequila fettuccine. Nicely seasoned and flavorful.
Also, checking into yelp gives you a free dessert from their bakery. Awesome! Got their triple layer chocolate mousse that contains dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and white chocolate with shavings on the top. It's delicious.
Waitress was nice. Last time I went, we got just drinks and since we were drinking, she didn't come by that often, which was fine.
By far the best place in La Jolla to catch the games. The seating is
comfortable with plenty of elbow room so you don't feel like you're sitting
on your neighbor's lap. The variety of food and drinks is excellent and very
reasonably priced. I highly recommend visiting the cafe after your meal to
check out their dessert and coffee selection.
I stopped in for breakfast and to watch the Charger game for a while. I ordered the breakfast croissant sandwich with a bacon scramble and cheese. It came with a side of rosemary potatoes and a bowl of fruit for $9.95. (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/barfly-la-jolla-la-jolla?select=bD0i8AYyB92BUVmsaKHqMQ#OtrfAIS49MDkJ9bMvIfRBQ">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>) I also ordered a side of english muffins toast for $1.50 (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/barfly-la-jolla-la-jolla?select=bD0i8AYyB92BUVmsaKHqMQ#yGdjktylDIiAnrn2spCIUQ">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>), and a house drip coffee for $1.95.
The croissant was very good and it came from the bakery next door. It was very buttery and flaky, so much so that it kinda fell apart when I was handling it. That being said, the bacon scrambled eggs were very good. They came well seasoned and fluffy. (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/barfly-la-jolla-la-jolla?select=bD0i8AYyB92BUVmsaKHqMQ#F8NcXInFLVTpM_egLMHSCw">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>) The croissant sandwich however did need more cheese. There was so little of it, that it became an after thought.
The rosemary potatoes were good. They were cooked through well and seasoned well. (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/barfly-la-jolla-la-jolla?select=bD0i8AYyB92BUVmsaKHqMQ#RDdeNJ1hF_xOqcsFSp7E-g">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>) I thought the potatoes could of been a little more crispy and have more rosemary flavor. The fruit bowl was very nice. The fruits were all fresh. The English muffins were good. They would of been a lot better if the preserve was fresh, not packaged preserved.
The service here was okay. My server seemed a little grumpy and not enthusiastic about being there, so it put a little damper on my whole experience. The food came out in a good amount of time. The place has a lot of seating inside and out.
More cheese please...
Excellent Moscow mule, HH four bucks! Wandered in pre FWSD event with the ever so lovely Sela (Say wha? She's back people: queue applause!) and we were delighted to find a couple barstools open and a sassy pretty bartender to shake us up some ginger delight.
We didn't partake of the foods as our mouths were too full of news and catching up, but a drink or two in-our pocketbooks barely noticed! Great deal for a pre dinner drink or after a long work day.
I'm excited to go back and try the rest of the menu: Fish tacos, sliders, bruschette-all 4$ from 4-7
Â
For you sports fans? 24 TVS with all major games! Ooo and they also serve breakfast in the weekends! Ding ding ding!
I had a good overall experience at the Barfly for Monday Night Football. Â We planted ourselves in a booth and stayed for the entire Chargers/Raiders game.
Our server (forgot his name, but I remember he said he was from DC area) was really attentive and helpful with the menu suggestions. Â He never rushed us, came by our table plenty and gave us great service.
The menu is really odd. Â It is all over the place, and there is no cuisine that is honed in on. Â It is a smorgasbord-type menu, hitting about half a dozen different ethnic cuisines. Â I gotta tell you, I do not think I have ever seen pizza on the same menu as koufta kabob. Â There was the usual bar food (wings), burger, pizzas and pasta. Â However, what seemed to stand out was that there were a lot of middle eastern dishes on the menu. Â I get scared eating at a place that tries to cover so many different kinds of cuisine. Â Like a jack of all trades, such restaurants do not tend to be experts in any.
Food was just okay. Â I am a calamari fiend. Â Put them on the menu and I will order them. Â There was nothing special about the calamari. Â They served the standard rings with some legs (my favorite part). Â They came out crispy and hot. Â The rings were not too rubbery or too greasy and served with a simple marinara sauce. Â We also got a pineapple chicken skewers salad. Â The grilled pineapple and veggies on the skewers were delicious, but the chicken had a bizarre, almost chalky texture, and I really did not care for it. Â We also got the ahi tuna tartare. Â Eh. Â Nothing much to write home about. Â It was not a big hit considering there were four us and we did not finish it. Â
Lastly, we got the chicken shawarma. Â I love shawarma. Â I eat a lot of middle eastern food and I have several go-to places here in San Diego for shawarma. Â I had a hunch that of the various kinds of dishes offered on the menu that the strong presence of middle eastern dishes may have been a hint on what to zone in on.
I really enjoyed the shawarma. Â The chicken was tender and flavorful. Â The hummus was great, creamy texture with pine nuts, not too overloaded with garlic and the pita bread was nice and soft and it was not dried out and hard as a rock. Â We scarfed this dish down.
So, Barfly has a nice set-up, televisions everywhere to watch the game (or games). Â The service was great and if you are going to eat here, I recommend honing in on the middle eastern food.
I will be back and hopefully next time by focusing on what appears to be restaurant's food strength will make for an even better experience.
Took a party of 12 with kids and adults in for dinner on a fairly slow Sunday evening. After 20 minutes we finally met our waiter who took our drink orders. 10 minutes later with no waiter in site, I informed the nearby blonde female bartender that we had yet to get our drinks, let alone order our food. Her attitude was bad from the get go.
Rather than apologizing and working on a solution, she immediately started telling me all the reasons they were slow, new waiter, etc... I replied that as a customer, I just need to hear that it will be taken care of and that perhaps the new guy needed help. Â This clearly offended her and she showed it by rolling eyes and groaning.
The entire night went from bad to worse. When the bartender finally came by helping with drinks I told her I didn't mean to offend her and that the waiter took all responsibility for being so slow. Not much reaction on her part.
10 minutes later I had to return to the same bartender to tell her we still hadn't ordered food and our party was hungry and getting impatient. She then AGAIN started giving me unwanted feedback about the slow waiter and how she had to help him all night.
I stopped the insanity and told her to just get the manager. To his credit he was a professional who did what he could to salvage the night.
Food was ok at best. Pizza lookedand tasted  like a Dijourno right out of the freezer.
Disappointed to say the least and we  will not return.
This place is a joke. First the drink prices are a ripoff. But then they have the audacity to overcharge us, which I believe to be intentional. I believe this because when we brought the overcharge to the attention of management they blew us off.
They tried to charge us for an extra bottle after we ordered bottle service. What do they think we were that drunk that we would not notice? We are taking them to small claims court now. Nice business huh? Plus I have heard that they have pulled the same scam on other customers.
I would not go here at all, but if you insist on supporting shady businesses and possibly getting ripped off, at least do not order bottle service here. Â You will be sorry.
There is nothing impressive about this place. One star.
This review is for Happy Hour!!! This is my 2nd visit to BarFly.
HH is from M-F from 4-7p. Appropriately advertised as $4@4.
Luckily during our visit, we had the establishment all to ourselves so we had awesome service. We found some seats at the bar and ordered away.
I opted for the draft Hef and the fish tacos (2) - each were $4. The Hef and tacos were surprisingly pretty good. I also tried the wings and sliders. The wings were OK with ranch and the sliders were overcooked.
BarFly has a decent Happy Hour menu with a good selection. Parking can be a little difficult since it's downtown LJ. 2 hour street parking until 6p, but free thereafter.
I'll be back - unce uncing it up with the Duke and my Triple Date with bottle service...
Its official, as of 5/7/2012, I am the Duke of BarFly.... Â Hahaha! Â I have over 12 check in's here and 4 of those are from the past 4 weekends. Â And what do you know, I got another birthday party invite here for this coming Saturday. Â COUNT ME IN!
I love coming here because it's close to home and the DJ's know whats up. Â Basically, if any of the DefTal DJ's are spinning that night, you know it's going to be a good night.
Another plus is the type of crowd this place attracts. Â Sorry, but I can't stand newly turned 21 year olds who don't know how to handle their alcohol. Â Drinks here are about the same price as Downtown clubs and parking is free. Â
Friday nights is pretty chill but Saturday nights is where this place gets crazy! Â From the crowd dressin to impress, all the way to the hot go-go dancers who all are so cool to talk to and take pictures with! Â
Ill be back again and again and again. Â One of these days, I'll actually come here for happy hour or dinner just to change it up a bit... But for now, work hard and play harder!
So last Saturday night, I accompanied hubby for a "pseudo" high school reunion. More of a gathering actually, haha. Our long time friend and DJ put us on the list so no cover charge for us. Otherwise I believe it's $10 cover charge to get in.
Since I'm way past my hardcore clubbing days, I appreciated the chill vibe and upscale atmosphere at Barfly. They offer bottle service in their VIP booths, a somewhat spacious dance floor and a small outdoor patio. Can't speak for the food since we didn't eat there but our friends seemed to be enjoying their sliders and other appetizing fare.
Best part of the night: seeing hubby's bitchy high school ex-girlfriend give me dirty looks all night even though I extended my hand and gave her a smile when I was introduced to her. Excuse me honey...looks like you've got a bit of insecurity on your face. May wanna wipe it off some betch.
Mission "look hotter than your honey's ex-gf" complete. Cheers ;)
The Night of Friday December 9, 2011:
I was here for another one of my colleague's birthday party.
It's a restaurant by day and a nightclub by night.
Came in early enough without a cover (YES!)
The crowd is mostly Caucasion and Asian with only about five blacks (myself included) and no hispanics.
There were foreigners here as well. They were cool and nice to talk too.
The crowd age varies from the mid 20's to maybe the upper 40's which is what I like.
Apparantly a Corona costs $5.00 when ordered by the waiter but $6.00 at the bar??? Â I don't recall it being happy hour during my time here.
Somewhat upscale, although a fight broke out here. Luckily there were no glass beer bottles flying. I guess rich people actually do have a little thug in them.
A few douches, but not nearly as bad as the Pacific Beach nightclubs and bars.
Music was okay for the most part, but I left the dance floor as soon as they started playing Justin Bieber songs (we are not middle school kids!!!) It doesn't matter how drunk I am, but I can't dance to a Justin Bieber song.
Did a good job keeping the restroom clean (at least the men's restroom anyway).
No bathroom attendants (I really don't care for those. I know how to wash my
hands. I'm a BIG BOY) :p
Highlight of the night was when EVERYONE including myself singing along to the "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" theme song that the DJ was playing.
This sums up my night of Friday December 9, 2011.
Food- Below Par
Crowd- Either older with something to prove or young snobby and looking to pretend fight.
Service- Poor
Bouncers- Full of themselves, cocky, and desperately seeking a lawsuit
Drink Selection-Limited
Over Priced
This place would do well in San Ysidro.
I know it's a 21 and up club but I def. saw a few girls sweet talk there way into the club that were well under the age of 21 so I am marking it as all ages so if you are an attractive underage women, I would make your way to barfly, you have a chance at getting in, they seem to be laxed with the women, men run the other way they won't think twice about throwing your back out.
Ridiculous.
I was trying to think of other words to describe here, but there was no other single word that can capture the true nature of Bar Fly.
Ever seen the movie? Â Amazing.
This is NOT the movie.
While playing into the name of the movie, the actual establishment is not a place a place that might scare away the feint of heart. Â It is not a place for a seasoned drinker to walk in, establish a bar fight within seconds of entering, and loose as a bloodied mess in an alley.
BarFly is what one would expect in LJ, though, and they meet the needs of their intended customers well ... which is to offer overpriced drinks, give an attitude of money is more important than character, and generally behave non-barflyish.
For a real BarFly experience, try Tobacco Rhodas on for size. Â That place is legitimate.
I went here for a Team in Training fundraiser over the weekend and had a blast! This was my first time here and loved the location, the vibe and crowd. Not your typical downtown hotspot but for those that wanted to have a little fun, dance but not be too wild, this was the perfect place for you! Â It ended up being the perfect spot for us on Saturday night! Â We had a blast!
I would certainly consider coming back and perhaps doing the bottle service thing. Â This seems like it would be a cool place for a night out with the girls or even with a big group of friends. Staff was very nice and we were able to get drinks easily throughout the night.
I give BarFly a thumbs up and thank them for letting my teammates use their facilities for the evening to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. They raised over $1,000! Go TEAM!
If you're interested in donating, visit my fundraising website at <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fpages.teamintraining.org%2Fsd%2Fwildtri11%2Fsharon&s=883b43def8dfd667d26c8524d49d1d1a9573890877f8d2ef6fd2341142a34a14" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://pages.teamintrain…</a> - I'm still short of my goal. Help!
um.....
Quite the experience. I went here on a Saturday night with one of my girlfriends. We ate some dinner. The waiter kept forgetting about our orders. You could tell, he would look at us and run to the kitchen. When we got out food, it was kind of cold. The food was okay. Nothing to write home about. The martinis and wine were pretty good. Service was ok. My friend didn't really like her food and the waiter didn't really seem to care.
Well after dinner, we decided to stay and see what all the hype was about. We sat on some couches that they roped off. We were the only two sitting back there. It made it look like we rented the whole area out or something. i am not sure why they roped that area off.
They then put up some stripper poles and the DJ came on. He was TERRIBLE. What decade are we in? He was playing the worst music. Then the go go dancers came out. They were so awkward right in the middle of the bar. No one was even watching them.
The crowd consisted of old men trying to hit on young girls ( myself included). Cougars, hitting on young men. And a mix of others.
The reason this place got any stars at all is the people watching was phenominal. Love watching 60 year old ladies with botox and boob jobs, dance, get drunk, and hit on young dudes.
LOL. I had fun!
I agree with Jen R's assessment of the stuckup workers. Hello bouncer. Do not walk away from me to talk to another coworker as I am the only one on line. We called over another bouncer who pointed to the one who walked away as the one in charge of entrance. A few seconds later that same bouncer lets in a guy who covertly slides him a tip.
Music is good. There's a small dance floor and two podiums for go go dancers. Drinks are really strong. I probably won't come here if I ever have to pay a cover. It's not worth dealing with this injustice in service
Yes! Â Another overly pretentious venue that thinks it's set up shop in Vegas or L.A. Â After my experience the other night, I walked away wondering, "is this place trying to fail?"
Came here on a Thursday with about 12 guys during the warmup round of a bachelor party. Â It was painfully obvious that the place was far from populated, yet the velvet rope patrol was in full effect and provided the following moments of sheer comedy:
When asked if there was a cover, Mr. Clipboard took a full two seconds to look our group up and down and then stammered, "um, uh, yes! Yes, there is a cover charge tonight, it will be $20."
Realizing that we weren't even considering that offer, he quickly went down to $10/head, but couldn't go any lower because of the "world famous DJ" that was spinning, that night.
While we were debating where to go instead, a couple of other guys walked up.
Mr. Clipboard: "Are you on the guestlist?"
Guys: "Nope, just wanted to check the place out."
Not sure if he wanted to hear something else, but the host then took a look at his EMPTY clipboard as though their names (and pieces of paper) were going to randomly appear on there.
MC: "Ok, looks like we can get you in; we do have a dress code [referring to the flip-flops worn by one of the guys], but I'm going to make an exception for you, tonight. Â Have fun."
Seriously, if you're new in town, aren't you looking to get your name out there or at least make a couple bucks trying? Â Be exclusive on weekends, if that's your thing, but take what you can get mid-week to pay the rent. Â Prospect Bar and Grill thanks you, Barfly, for sending our money over to them.
Places like Barfly always catch a bad rap on Yelp. People are much more likely to log on and complain about being denied by a bouncer or paying a steep price for drinks, but the fact of the matter is that it's just the category of venue they fall into. It's an upscale nightclub, so my recommendation is to know what you're getting yourself into before you decide to make a go at it here. Yes, there is a guestlist...Yes, there is a cover...Yes, there's a red carpet at the entry... Yes, it's very bottle service friendly...Yes, a waitress or bartender might turn down your best pickup line...Yes, you'll probably see some d-bags let in before you because they're boys with security...and so on so on, If you prepare yourself for the obvious that comes with this type of scene I think you'll find Barfly to be a great time.
Last Friday, 5 dudes and one friend's mother came out for a bromantic birthday celebration. Â I don't think we talked to a single girl besides our waitresses, but we all agreed it was more fun than we've had in while! You know a place is good times when you can say "Screw chicks tonight guys! Let's just dance," and have an absolute blast doing so. Why was it so fun?
The Music- Whoever they had spinning tunes played some jams and at a nice variety. It was mostly hip-hop and pop, but with a dash of the "oonce oonce." Not too much to the point where you feel out of place if you're not rolling on something, but just enough to keep that guy in your group from whining about the lack of techno.
The Service- As mentioned we came with all dudes, but it was far from a sausage-fest. We got bottle service for the birthday boy complete with comfy furniture and waitresses who were not only smokin' but super fun and flirtatious. Hot staff is dime a dozen in SD, but the fact that they (seemingly genuinely) had a good time with us was worth coming back for. They even brought my friend a piece of cake with a  sparkler as a candle for the celebration.
I'll be the first to admit, I always thought the whole table reservation thing was for dudes trying to overcompensate for something, but after last Friday I've come to realize it can be worth it if your experience is similar to here. I guess bottle service isn't just for d-bags after all.
The Crowd- It's kind of a fusion between PB and Del Mar, but collects clientele from upper crust of both hoods. Chances of you getting vomit on your shoes from an SDSU student are much lower, as well as being creeped out by someone twice your age hitting on you. Somewhere in between there you'll find the vibe of Barfly, if that makes any sense.
All in all our experience at Barfly was great. Even though I know this isn't really my type of scene I found it to be a nice change of pace from the dives I normally frequent. If you're looking for an upscale spot to get your swerve on or just check out the eye candy give it a shot. It sure beats any club in the Gaslamp.
